…Vernon Mwaanga reveals a hidden 1990s affair with the Congolese music queen Tshala Muana

VETERAN Zambian diplomat and politician Vernon Mwaanga has broken his silence on a long-hidden and high-society romance.
Speaking on the Kenny T Podcast, Mr Mwaanga confessed to a passionate, private relationship with late Congolese rhumba icon Tshala Muana during the late 1990s.
He revealed that rigid State etiquette and political status ultimately killed their chances of marriage.
Mr Mwaanga admitted that while he was deeply in love with the ‘Queen of Mutuashi,’ their vastly different public lives created an unbridgeable gap.
At the time, Mr Mwaanga was serving as a senior Government official, he felt his professional status could not match the public persona of a global musician whose stage work was defined by wild dressing and suggestive dancing.
To keep the romance alive, the couple operated in the shadows.
Mr Mwaanga secretly hosted the Congolese diva in Zambia, taking her on romantic getaways to Livingstone’s Victoria Falls and the Mfuwe Game Parks.
When they wanted to escape regional scrutiny entirely, they met secretly in France, where she was based.
The relationship sparked heavy jealousy among Zambia’s political elite.
Mr Mwaanga disclosed that several senior Government officials tried to sabotage the relationship.
Rivals attempted to lure Muana away by offering massive sums of cash during her concert tours in Zambia.
“A lot of my friends were jealous of our relationship,” Mr Mwaanga told the podcast. “They said bad things about me to her just to break our relationship. But she would always say, ‘I only have one man here in Zambia—Vernon.'”
Despite the intense bond, the weight of political expectations and lifestyle clashes forced a permanent breakup in the late 2000s.
In a twist of political irony, Tshala Muana later transitioned into the very world that divided them.
She went on to release over twenty albums and eventually became a government minister under the Laurent-Désiré Kabila administration in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mr Mwaanga confessed he was deeply shaken by her passing in December 2022, sending private condolences to her family to mark the end of an era for a love that was too wild for the statehouse.
