REPORT: Son of Late Boko Haram Leader Abubakar Shekau Reportedly Emerges Within Group

Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau, the biological son of late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, is reportedly emerging within the ranks of the insurgent group, raising concerns about the possible continuation of his father’s ideology and networks.

Abubakar Shekau became Boko Haram’s leader after the death of founder Mohammed Yusuf and oversaw some of the group’s most violent years, with attacks targeting communities, security forces, government institutions and civilians across the North-East and neighbouring countries.

Shekau was also known for his propaganda videos and threats against governments.

He was killed in 2021 after a confrontation with fighters from ISWAP, an event that significantly changed the dynamics of the insurgency around the Lake Chad region.

The reported emergence of his son within Boko Haram could raise fresh security concerns, although the claim would require independent verification.
