PUTIN: RUSSIA WANTS PARTNERSHIP WITH AFRICA “ON MUTUAL RESPECT, NOT COLONIAL” LINES
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeated Moscow’s message that it seeks cooperation with African nations based on mutual respect, positioning Russia as an alternative to Western powers with a colonial past.
What Moscow is saying:
· No political conditions attached to cooperation
· Emphasis on sovereignty and non-interference
· Offers include grain supplies, energy deals, and security cooperation
The other side:
· Analysts say Russia has its own extractive interests: minerals, energy, military footholds
· Deals are often struck with authoritarian governments and lack transparency
· Russia’s trade with Africa remains far smaller than China’s, the EU’s, or the US’s
Why it matters:
Several African states, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, have pivoted toward Moscow after falling out with Western partners. Whether this brings real development or a new form of dependency is still up for debate
