CSOs CHALLENGE POLICE IG ON CYBER SECURITY ACT

A consortium of civil society organizations has noted with great alarm a statement allegedly made by the Inspector-General of Police threatening to prosecute attendees of Zoom meetings hosted by the President of the Resident Doctors’ Association of Zambia, Dr. Brian Sampa.

The CSOs have reminded the Inspector-General of the constitutional right to freedom of assembly as guaranteed regardless.

They powers of the police should not be used to intimidate citizens, ahead of the 2021 general elections.

They have advised members of the Resident Doctors’ Association to demand that the Police provide a specified legal basis within the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act their right to assemble online is being threatened.

The statement has been issued by Chapter One Foundation Executive Director, Linda Kasonde on behalf ACTIONAID Zambia, and Alliance for Community Action, Bloggers of Zambia Caritas Zambia, GEARS, TIZ Among others.
