CHAWAMA HAS A NEW MP!!
FDD’s Bright Nundwe has been declared winner of the much anticipated Chawama Parliamentary By Election.
Nundwe polled 8,085 votes against his closest rival Morgan Muunda from the ruling UPND who got 6, 542 votes.
Muunda entered “early campaigns” in Chawama and was seen as a front runner by his supporters while Nundwe was adopted under the FDD ticket after the seat was declared vacant following the prolonged absence of Lawmaker Tasila Lungu.
Nundwe was backed by the Given Lubinda Led PF Faction and some Tonse Alliance members.
Other notable results saw the opposition Citizens First candidate Davison Mulenga getting 1,534 while an Independent Candidate George Mwenya supported by the “Ichaibaiche Movement” was fourth with 466 votes.
The New Congress Party led by Peter Chanda despite campaigning vigorously including using the portrait of Former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu on campaign materials saw their candidate Mutete Mohammed settle for sixth Position with only 319 votes.

Congratulations to Bright Numdwe and FDD in brackets Lubinda led PF faction. But there are two things which people should know; 1. wrong candidate for UPND. 2. Sympathy vote. Hence, this should not over excite anyone because it’s just a repeat of what we saw in Petauke Central. After losing Pambashe and Kawambwa, PF through NCP won Petauke Central but there after lost Lumezi in the same Eastern Province. In other words, this is the second win for PF through another Party after Petauke, so by far, it can’t give us a national picture of what we expect in August this year. You will be surprised that the new MP may lose the same Chawama in August to UPND or to another party. Once more, it’s congratulations to the winner and the people of Chawama. In democracy, everyone wins.

The sympathy vote may be so but even with the low voter-turnout,the vote difference between a shambolic FDD and formidable UPND is cause for worry.Add in the Kalimanshi hypocricy and you have a disillusioned and discouraged voter

You see New Congress Party of Peter Chanda has performed very badly on its own. Under Tonse Alliance it was doing well and won Petauke, but he chose to leave and now he knows it is a small party.
PF and the opposition should not be excited by the result. Chawama was and still is firm PF ground, so the result is not surprising, neither is it an indication of the way urban areas will vote.
PF have simply RETAINED their seat. A more objective assessment would be to look at the percentages and compare with the 2021 polls.
The confusion that is in the opposition (specifically PF and Tonse) is very loud and hence can be attended to since it is visible, however the confusion that is within the ruling party is silent hence from outside you see unity but from inside there is turmoil, this kind of confusion is difficult to normalize because it is not acknowledged openly, is you ask them they we say we are fine but in the dark they unleash punches at each other, it is this which will lead to their disintegration.
SOME PEOPLE ARE SPOOKED AS TO WHY PF IS CELEBRATING IN CHAWAMA AFTER THE FDD VICTORY, PF AND TONSE ALLIANCE WERE UNABLE TO FEATURE A CANDIDATE UNDER PF BECAUSE CHABINGA HAS KEPT THE INSTRUMENTS OF POWER IN HIS OO7, SO OPPOSITION HAD TO CHOOSE FDD AS A SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLE FOR THIS ELECTION HENCE THEIR CELEBRATION.
To expect UPND to be wining every by-election is being naive. There is and will always be a sizable number of voters who will not support the ruling party. Besides the UNIP days, parliament has & will continue to host MPs from various political parties so this win in a PF stronghold is not surprising. The loss or win for UPND should be determined in the share gain or loss since last election. Congratulations to FDD, the people have spoken! We want to see more violence free elections so we can have more people participating.
