GABON’S FORMER FIRST LADY JAILED 20 YEARS FOR EMBEZZLEMENT, CORRUPTION
A court in Gabon has jailed the country’s former First Lady Sylvia Bongo and Noureddin Bongo, son of ex-President Ali Bongo, 20 years each.
The verdict was announced Tuesday night after a swift two-day trial. The pair were convicted of embezzlement and corruption.
The court imposed a joint fine of $177,000 to compensate for financial losses to the Gabonese state. Noureddin faces an additional penalty of $2.1 billion.
