‘Emily in Paris’ in Rome doesn’t make sense’ – French President Macron

0

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed his determination to keep the popular Netflix series Emily in Paris based in the capital, following speculation that the show’s main character might relocate to Rome.

In an interview published by Variety on Wednesday, Macron addressed fans’ concerns after the show’s protagonist, Emily, portrayed by Lily Collins, hinted at moving to the Italian capital at the end of season four.

“Rome doesn’t make sense to me either,” Macron remarked. “We will ask them to remain in Paris.” His comments have reignited debate among fans and locals who see the series as a celebration of Parisian culture.

Macron Proud of Brigitte’s Cameo in the Show

Adding to his enthusiasm for the series, Macron shared how “super proud” he is of his wife, Brigitte Macron, who made a cameo appearance as herself in the latest season. “It’s just a few minutes, but I think it was a very good moment for her,” Macron said. He praised the show’s portrayal of France, describing it as “super positive in terms of attractiveness for the country.”

Despite being proud of his wife’s involvement, Macron revealed he has no plans for a cameo of his own, joking, “I’m less attractive than Brigitte.”

Brigitte Macron’s love for the show was well-known, with lead actress Lily Collins noting how the first lady had been a “big fan” and had even invited the cast and creator to meet years ago.

Is There More to Macron’s Determination?

Macron’s passionate stance on keeping Emily in Paris in its namesake city raises some lighthearted questions: Could his fight to retain the show in Paris have something to do with his wife’s cameo?

Was it her fondness for the series that inspired Macron to ensure Emily’s return to Paris after her Italian adventure? Perhaps Macron is just as enchanted by the show’s portrayal of the city as its many fans.

So, could it be that Macron’s fight to keep Emily in Paris is also a fight to preserve his wife’s newfound role in the show?

Ghana: Catholic Church takes stand against illegal mining also known as ‘Galamsey’

0

The Bishops of the Accra Archdiocese, alongside thousands of Catholic parishioners, organized an ‘Environmental Prayer Walk’ in the Ghanaian capital to protest the destructive effects of illegal mining, or galamsey.

The peaceful demonstration on Friday (Oct. 11), aimed at raising awareness about the environmental damage caused by galamsey, culminated in the presentation of a petition to the presidency.

The protesters united in their call for stronger environmental protections and an end to galamsey, which has ravaged Ghana’s water bodies and ecosystems.

“It is the fight of all of us. Policy makers, those who are involved in the business, our traditional leaders and indeed every Ghanaian,” the Director, Governance, Justice & Peace/Chaplain To Parliament and a representative of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference Fr Michael Quarcoo said.

The march, drew widespread participation, including FixTheCountry and the Democracy Hub.

“Our struggle is that we want Galamsey to end and our water bodies to be fixed. Any group that is willing to march on that objective, you can count on our full support to be part of them,” NII AYI SAGOE, a member of Democracy Hub said.

The environmental devastation caused by unregulated gold-mining operations has triggered growing demands for urgent government action, including a state of emergency in mining areas and the cancellation of mining licenses.

Ghana, which is grappling with an economic crisis, is set to soon resume debt repayment in two weeks.

According to the Ghana Chambers of Mines, the core mining and quarrying sub-sector’s (excluding oil and gas) growth rate tapered from 28.9 per cent in 2022 to 7.2 per cent in 2023.

Activist Bernard Mornah calls for a shift of paradigm: “We have done this mining for God knows how long. Tell me that mineral revenue is responsible for the development of any infrastructure in this country. We still go to borrow and come and fix all the problems of this country. Isn’t that sickening?”

The walk ended at the Christ the King Temple, where a petition was presented.

The choice of the spot is particularly symbolic, as it is located next to the Revolution Square, a site previously denied to democracy activists, which was met with heavy-handed tactics.

It remains to be seen whether this signals a shift towards a more accommodating police strategy for protests or if it reflects the continuation of selective justice.

Baywatch star’s homeless ex-wife Loni Willison, seen eating lunch alone on the sidewalk

Former model, Loni Willison, was spotted this week eating lunch alone while sitting on a Los Angeles sidewalk.

The 41-year-old, who is the ex-wife of Baywatch star Jeremy Jackson, was surrounded by her belongings as she ate her meal.

The troubled former star has been seen several times over the past couple of years searching for food outdoors, while suffering visible bruising on her hands, sporting a broken finger, and hauling a shopping cart of clothes behind her.

When she was glimpsed this week having her lunch on the sidewalk, her hands appeared dirty.

The change in Loni’s life, from walking the red carpets to being homeless, has shocked people.

She previously modelled for magazines such as Glam Fit, Flavour, and Iron Man.

Loni’s tragic downfall comes after she blamed her ex-husband, Jeremy, for causing all of the problems in her life.

Baywatch star

In an interview published earlier this year by X17 Online, she was asked where her life went wrong.

She simply replied: “My ex-husband. Getting married. At least I got divorced… it set everything up.”

The couple had an acrimonious split in 2014 after they had been married for less than two years.

Loni has alleged Jeremy attempted to strangle her in a physical altercation when they were drunk.

But 2018 was when she was first pictured homeless on the streets after years out of the public eye.

At the time, she spoke to DailyMail.com about her downfall, revealing that she suffered from a mental breakdown in 2016 and started to believe that someone was sending electrical currents into her body that could only be fixed by taking crystal meth.

Her ex-husband, Jeremy Jackson, 43, also suffered crystal method addiction.

He revealed in August this year that his addiction caused him to “spiral” down.

“I was spiraling down for sure,” the actor said, adding, “My life slipped through my hands like sand.”

He also said he’s in “remission” today, in an interview with People.

“[When people ask] ‘am I in a good place,’ they mean am I still sober. It’s a huge mistake people make with ‘good and bad,’ when drug addiction and alcoholism is a case of mental sickness, not about morality fortitude or personal character and virtue.”

“I am in remission from the chronic, fatal and progressive disease I was once plagued with? ‘Yes, thank God. Yes, I am.'”

ZAMBIA IS GRINDING TO A HALT BEFORE OUR EYES!!- CHISHALA KATEKA

ZAMBIA IS GRINDING TO A HALT BEFORE OUR EYES!!

12 October 2024

What we see playing out before our eyes, in this country, is nothing short of amazing.  Our country is experiencing extreme problems in almost every area that matters to the lives of its citizens.  These problems, have been escalating almost on a daily basis since the UPND took power.

Much as we criticised the UPND in Government for decisions they made and which we as New Heritage Party thought would lead us into problems, in our heart of hearts, hoped against hope that the UPND would take these well-meant pieces of advice, but with their ears plugged shut, eyes blinkered and heads woozy from their newly established relation with the IMF and their new found masters, they have not only managed to slow down the little progress that was left by their predecessors, they have completely halted even the attempt by our people to forge ahead.  We were hopeful that our brothers and sisters in the UPND would do the right thing by the Zambians, after all, Zambia is our collective land and heritage..

Alas, it has now become apparent to all, that our criticisms and hopes were all in vain that what we greatly feared is coming to pass before our very eyes, Zambia is grinding to halt.

Why do we say so?  We currently have:

A very high cost of living that the UPND Government has failed to contain.
Very high rates of interest;
The worst foreign exchange rate that the country has ever experienced and that the Bank of Zambia has failed to contain;
Lack of liquidity in the economy;
A police state in full bloom
The highest number of loadshedding hours ever experienced in the country;
Resultant water shortages; and now as if the all the above were not enough
The country has run out of fuel.

Can the situation get any worse than this?  Without electricity, industry is shutting down.  Prior to this, the country has been having fuel, albeit, expensive fuel.  This meant that the country could move from point A to point B.  Without fuel, it becomes impossible for the economy to move, it is surely grinding to a halt.

What can be done about this?

Effect a (legitimate) regime change in 2026 at the polls.  A regime change in 2026 on voting day is required in order to remove the most obvious obstacle – the UPND in Government – as this is what is blocking other players from bringing solutions to the table.  The last time we experienced the grinding to a halt of our nation, was in the UNIP days.  It was only after a regime change that we saw a reversal of the damage done.
Come up with a Govt of National Unity dedicated to the restoration and rebuilding of the nation including:

Giving hope and dignity back to Zambians by getting the nation back to work

Reclaiming our sovereignty over our natural resources to restore the wealth of this nation back to the legitimate owners – the Zambians – and to decriminalise our people in relation to their access to this wealth, especially the young people in the mineral rich areas such as Rufunsa, Mumbwa, Copperbelt and North Western Province but who are labelled “illegal”miners and yet the minerals are found on their land.  They are shot at and brutalised just so that foreigners can have access their wealth.

Getting the nation back on track through the conducting of a sectoral clean up and introduction of policies that will see the reversal of the current national malaise.

Putting Zambia and Zambians first in all decisions made relating to the nation

It is almost impossible for the people that have caused the problems that the country is faced with, be the ones to reverse the same.

It is abundantly clear, from the foregoing, that the UPND Government has failed and failed spectacularly and cannot redeem itself out of this economic and governance quagmire.

Fellow Zambians, let us for the sake of our country and its future generations, join the people’s movement, join us in UKA and together, let us liberate this country from the shackles of poverty.

Is President HH and His New Dawn Government Really Winning this “Battle” Against Corruption?
A rant by Rev Walter Mwambazi

So, like the rest of all well meaning Zambians, I have been watching this fight and wondering if our law enforcement agencies really have the teeth and the resources to fight individuals who are alleged to have accumulated property and assets believed to be proceeds of crime.

Truth be told, this was going to be a tough battle especially if one takes into consideration the fact that’s the New Dawn government has been trying utilize the law and it’s enforcement agencies.

In short, this fight has been “by the book”.

Whilst that is certainly the way to go, the challenge is with the entire system. What must be appreciated is that it is a “rotten” system that requires a complete overhaul to work.

I mean, we have had some convictions and some forfeitures of suspected proceeds of crime but then… in it’s current state, we might as well be wishing on unicorns and fairies. It’s just not possible.

Here is why I think so.

What we must all accept as Zambians is this, we are at a place where the by products of poor governance and weak institutions produced a way of living that defines the current culture in this country.

This culture can be broadly categorized into three serious factors namely…

– Clan based thinking (where we have cronyism, nepotism and tribalism).

With this it is virtually impossible for anything to work on merit. A meritocracy is a dream in our present state. Even under the current government, many UPND members feel they are “owed” for their loyalty and patronage.

This makes cronyism a foundational factor for many decisions that are being made because it is expected! We are all witnesses to how much PHH was condemned for taking “forever” to appoint his team.

–  Corruption (a direct result of the above as the individuals in public office have no other motivation but self and their wellbeing)

Where clan based thinking rules, no merit exists. People are there because they are related to somebody. They have no real “competence” for the job at hand. And so they underperform and even feel threatened by performers, hence hounding them out of their space.

No progress will ever be achieved with such.

– Mindset (in which four predominant paradigms exist – entitlement, dependency, job mentality and receiver way of thinking)

Many employees in the civil service and quasi government institutions and organizations feel entitled, and are not really in their calling. As such, performance is sub par and best or non existent at worst!

And you expect stellar service? That is a pipe dream!

This entire whole scenario was started by those in the MMD in the 90s after they saw what happened to ministers and CEOs who were unceremoniously removed from office under the UNIP government. It was slightly (but not effectively) slowed down by Mwanawasa but went into overdrive from RB going forward.

By the time the PF came in, this vice was now on steroids as painfully witnessed. It is now a culture and the only way you change a culture is by getting rid of the self reinforcing mechanisms sustaining it.

That is going to take some serious political will on the part of the New Dawn Government.

As far as I am concerned, this can only work if our current head of state is prepared to entertain the prospects of being a one term president.

Is that doable? I still shall wait and see…

ROBBING PAUL TO PAY PETER – ZESCO TARRIF EMERGENCY ADJUSTMENT

ROBBING PAUL TO PAY PETER – ZESCO TARRIF EMERGENCY ADJUSTMENT

Immediately after the High and Mighty pronounced that Zesco tariffs will be increased, ERB immediately obliged and approved Zesco re-submission of emergency tariff increament.

In the technical pricing term, this is what is called “cross price subsidization across segments”. In a layman’s language, it simply means giving relief to the lower segment and transferring the costs to the higher segments.

The implication is that those using pressing irons, geysers, stoves, and any form of heating equipment will breach the 200 KhW and will bear the costs for lights only users. In addition, they will pay more than the current usage rate. Net impact at residential level is a further increase in the cost of living because they will now pay more for electricity come November 1. Remember that in 2025 budget no credit exemption relief was provided on PAYE. So be ready to spend more.

As for businesses it’s a direct hit as you simply have to absorb the 115% tarrif increment regardless of what technical term used such incremental or whatever. Implication is that businesses have to adjust their prices upwards to recover these additional costs.

Sadly, the price adjustment by business will be passed on to the consumer, including the lower segment using below 200 khw per month. So, the reality is that the perceived benefit for the lower segment will be wiped out through increased prices. So it’s a vicious circle. The real impact of this measure will be felt right through the whole economy. It sounds great on paper, but ultimately, there will be a direct transmission on the cost of living, which every Zambian will feel the consequences.

In essence, Zesco has increased tarrifs to import power at higher costs, which they do not have money for. So this cost has been passed to the consumer.

At a macro economic level, expect inflation to increase as prices increase. At the social impact level, expect the quality of living to deteriorate as consumers absorb higher prices of goods and services procured from the business community. End result more pain for Zambians.

It should also be noted that it is not clear whether this measure will result in more hours of power, or Zesco will maintain 3 hours, which is as good as staying in darkness for 24 hours.

A good example is how much more will Trade Kings pay in power consumption? Direct hit 115%. So by how much will they increase prices on their wide range of products consumed by literally everyone, including lower segment R1 and R2. The end result is that the 20% discount will be badly wiped out, so simply put, no relief has been given.

BA VJ BALIPWA!

Here We Go Again
A Response to the statement attributed to Hon VJ Mwaanga
By
Ernest C Mwansa ( Interim President, The Zambia We Want Party)
I read the article attributed to Hon VJ Mwaanga in the Diggers NewspaperJ of the 6th Day of October 2024 with apprehension fearing that the article could draw different reactions in many a mind, especially seeing firstly that my own initial reaction was apprehension and the first phrase that came to mind was “here we go again!” and secondly because I was concerned that in this politically polarized environment people easily misunderstand each other.

In the said Diggers Newspaper mentioned above the screaming headline is as follows: “Even if people are dissatisfied with UPND, there is no alternative for 2026 -VJ”. By this statement I understand VJ to mean that people are dissatisfied and that the current opposition is not in any state to dislodge the UPND in 2026.

The little I have come to know of VJ is that he does not use words carelessly. He is someone who once told me that diplomacy is the ability to send someone to hell and that someone takes the journey there smiling all the way. So I checked my reaction and avoided jumping to conclusions before I had thought through what the man meant.

Now VJ is one of our venerated politicians and one feels that analyzing what ever he says about the political scenario currently obtaining in our country, requires insight into the mind of this great patriot and brilliant mind so as to try to decipher the true content and the import of his statement. VJ has done a lot for mother Zambia and we must all honour his contribution to mother Zambia. We should not rush to condemn what he says without first trying to understand what he means. In any case even if he makes a mistake or misunderstand he situation those traits are common to all humanity and as such we must be restrained in our reactions and cautious with our base reactions.

I recall that at one point some politician colleagues from our great Southern Province were very unhappy that VJ stood with other patriots from other provinces to support a national cause, as opposed to simply supporting someone who hailed from the Southern Province (that person’s name is deliberately withheld as that person is not part of my narrative in this article.). Suffice to say that a few colleagues in opposition then started shamelessly denying the fact that VJ hails from the Southern Province and started calling him VJ Mwansa. I still feel sorry for those political colleagues. In the final analysis it was the position that VJ held that won the day on the Zambian political arena.

As I delve into the statement I have quoted above which has been attributed to VJ, I must say that I feel uncertain about writing a comment about what VJ has said. But we are living in times when anger is taking away our analytical minds and supplanting our minds with bitter feelings all the time. My take is that VJ cannot make such a sweeping statement without having thought through it comprehensively and patriotically.

I may be wrong in my understanding of the statement by him but I would rather voice out what I think than remain mute or continue to wander whether one of the venerated political icons of this country has lost his ability to state his position in a manner that leaves people who rush to condemn feeling insulted while the thinking minds learn intended lessons from the same statement.

But I am obligated to make my comments about his statement by the fact that Zambia is bigger than any of us, including an icon of Zambian politics like VJ. I am even the more persuaded to comment by the fact that if VJ says something one has to take time to think seriously about his comment or comments. And finally I believe that VJ made the comment believing that Zambians will discuss it.

In my understanding VJ is saying two things both of which I totally agree with.

The first part of his comment is that people are dissatisfied with UPND.
If one ignores the first two words in the statement, namely; “Even if”, then what remains is the phrase ” people are dissatisfied with UPND”. This is a fact which most Zambians readily agree with. Only the UPND government and its followers seem satisfied with the fact only that they are now in government; that they have increased the Constituency Development Fund to K30 million; that they have employed a number of teachers and health practitioners the combined number of those employed is still less than a hundred thousand; satisfied with their appetite to curtail free speech and the assemblage of Zambians by using our men and women in uniform; by using the police and the soldiers to quell the people’s constitutional rights, (we are left to wonder how many men and women in uniform the UPND has recruited to be able to be sending them on missions that have nothing to do with protecting the public from internal and external enemies).
If we take into account that our population in now about twenty million and the people in formal employment does not exceed two million then we realize how insignificant the number less than one hundred thousand employees recruited in the public sector is. UPND is happy that, it has rescheduled the foreign debt and yet in so doing they have now completely transferred the debt to generations which have nothing to do with the contraction of the debt nor the misuse of such expensively borrowed money to be paid back by future generations, those innocent generations are now the ones who will shoulder the burden of paying back the debt. The UPND government has gone down in the annals of our history that it is under their guard that the prices of the staple food skyrocketed beyond the grasp of the average Zambian. Talk about infrastructural development, the only real infrastructure they are developing is the one where it has borrowed money from Zambian institutions like NAPSA, given it to a foreign company to construct the Lusaka /Ndola Dual Carriageway and then queerly given our toll gates to the people to whom we have lent our money to construct the road and made them the ones to control the collections from the toll gates for the next over twenty years! when it comes to utilizing our natural resources particularly the mineral resources, Zambia, under the UPND watch has specialized in enriching foreign investors in exchange for foreign investors giving Zambians the lowest paying jobs in those companies and ignores or refuses to receive taxes from the foreign investors. Yes the UPND is proud of a national budget which is less than half the budget of a university, Harvard University in the USA and much smaller than the budget of Gothenburg in Sweden whose population is about six hundred thousand (600,000) people (their annual budget is about forty five billion dollars compared to us at about Eighteen Billion dollars. What is worse is the fact that the UPND has failed to grow the Zambian economy which is instead shrinking.
But our colleagues in government seem very happy with their achievements.

I mean don’t you hear them saying that they will win the 2026 elections. They keep saying to us that there is no opposition to talk about in Zambia! The fact that VJ used the same words does not change the reality that it is an old record song from a very old relic. We have heard that played by other political regimes in our country.

Should we believe that there is no opposition in Zambia? Really? I mean let us face it. Historical facts on this matter proves the very opposite. It is a fact that in 1991 our founding President the late Dr Kaunda cut his term of office to bring about a snap election. He was sure of victory against the MMD and so was UNIP generally. The idea of a snap election obviously was to make sure that MMD did not have enough time to organize itself as a viable, vibrant and an entity ready to claim victory from the mighty UNIP. Because power had by this time a corrupting effect on the great leaders , the late founding father of our our nation went so far as to promise the Catholic church that once the elections were over and he was back in office the Catholics would walk on their rosaries.
At the time the snap elections were called by KK, as he was lovingly called by many, MMD had just about a year to prepare itself for elections and to contest the elctions. But the people of Zambia had already risen against the UNIP government and they helped the MMD organize itself as a political party. And the MMD trounced UNIP so badly that the former ruling party was left, politically, with the control of only one province out of the nine provinces of Zambia then and wondering where the votes of the women had gone.
As far as I am concerned therefore it was the people of Zambia who removed the UNIP from government and not MMD. The people used the MMD as the instrumentality for the removal of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) from office.

Come 2026 I am seeing a repeat of that same feat. This is three years down the line for the UPND. If the UPND has not realized that the people of Zambia have now resolved that the UPND cannot take the country beyond 2026 then the UPND has not been studying its own historic rise to power in 2021. I need only to remind the UPND that the writing was on the wall for the PF just about two years into their last term of office that the people of Zambia had rejected the PF misrule and were resolved to remove it. What only remained was to settle on a vehicle to use to achieve the Zambian people’s goal. Zambians finally settled on the UPND and once that was done Zambians bought their time, endured the abuse of the PF cadres and police until the day of the general elections. Zambians rose en mass, braving even the night itself and queued up to wait for the opening of the polling stations. That massive turnout was, for those of us who know what Zambians do on election day when they are dissatisfied with the government of the day was a tell tell evidence that the PF was gone no matter the song “alebwelapo”!
As I write this article I am convinced that the people of Zambia have reached a point of no return with the UPND. I am equally convinced that having reached this point Zambians will certainly find the right vehicle and the. rIght people to achieve their now settled desire to correct the partial mistake made in 2021, namely the putting into office of the UPND due to their dissatisfaction with the leadership style and the undemocratic direction into which the PF was dragging the country.
So yes VJ has seen that the people of Zambia disapprove of the UPND. In saying what he has said he has warned the UPND that they are no longer the beloved party they were just before and immediately after the 2021 elections. That to live in that yesteryears belief that they are still popular is to bury their heads in the sand. That come the 2026 elections the UPND like the PF will wake up licking their wounds and wondering when their assumed popularity had evaporated.

The second part of VJ’s statement is another stark warning but this time to the opposition groupings in our country. He puts it directly that (I paraphrase) there is currently no single opposition political party with enough political muscle to single handedly remove the ruling UPND from power. We may not like the taste of this analysis from VJ but if we are true to ourselves as opposition political leaders we must say VJ’s analysis of this point is equally true. I for one again agree with him on this point as well. I mean let us face facts. Firstly the reason that PF lost in 2021 was because it lost a lot of people who did not like the leadership style of the PF. These people rejected the cadreism that had taken root in the former ruling party; they were not impressed by the obvious sudden rise of many leaders from rags to riches in a very short space of time. They were uncomfortable with the polarization of our country into regional cocoons and the open pronouncements of tribal sentiments. Because of, among other things, many who were supportive of the PF either left the Party or decided they were not going to vote for the PF. The end result was that the PF lost the elections.

This is something that has sadly continued unabated even now during the UPND’s time in office. The feeble efforts to root this vice from among us has been targeted only at the political opponent of the the UPND. On the other hand UPND cadres have the freedom and liberty to pronounce themselves on any subject including seditious ones without repercussions; to be tribal and to insult any political opponent as much as they want, including insultingly addressing their political opponents who are as old as their own parents down to their nakedness.

But in the world where I grew up a young person no matter how angry he or she would become would not dare to insult some one as old his or her parents. The logic was basically that to insult some one who was as old as your parents was in fact the same insulting your own parents as well. Such insults were treated as insults to one’s own parents and were traditionally scorned upon. Biblically speaking this position is correct because the bible urges young people to treat as fathers or mothers all those who are elderly in society.

Only a regionalist and/or an ostrich mentality would deny the fact of regionalism and selective trials of political opponents as highlighted above as being a reality during this period of the UPND in power. Zambians believe they are one Zambia one nation and they despise those who try to divide them. Zambia has also espoused Christianity and a culture of insults is anathema to our national consciousness.

So we see that the former ruling party the PF stands divided not by its own volition but by the design of those who are determined to see that party die, their sworn political opponents’. the UPND.

No Zambian should rejoice when they see a deliberate ploy to destroy a political party. We live in a democratic dispensation and any attempt to deliberately destroy another political party by anyone including the party is government is a clear warning of an emerging dictatorship! We must all fight to protect the victims of such abuses. Afterall those victims are Zambians like ourselves and the danger of remaining silent in such circumstances is that one day it will be you who will be victimized for your beliefs and others will watch with glee your persecution. We must not as Zambians fall into the trap of ” it is okay so long as it is the other person”. When we hold that view we open ourselves to be abused by those who hold power. It has been said and it must always stand true that an injury to one is an injury to all. It is for above reason that I personally demand the release of Mr Nakachinda of the PF seeing that the state has failed to charge him and the legal period within which he can be legally held in detention is long gone. The UPND must stop this malicious prosecution of opponents otherwise they are setting the snare which will one day soon catch up with them. The police they are using are not their police force but our national police service. This government must remember that whatever they are doing is being recorded by our national consciousness and will certainly be divulged against the UPND at an appropriate time soon.

Secondly, there is confusion within the remaining group in the PF. The confusion has ben created, it is my belief, by the the government of the UPND,l in its effort to undermine the perceived strength of the PF and particularly to try to undermine the political comeback bid of the former Republican President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu. That effort has seen a number of MPs belonging to the PF facing expulsion from Parliament and are only hanging in Parliament through court injunction orders. So we must agree that there are difficulties in the PF. We must go further and agree that the current efforts by the various political parties are also proving problematic.

Not too long ago the United Kwacha Alliance split leading to the creation of  a second group called Tonse Alliance. One thing is true for both these Alliances; they both have yet to show the country their terms of engagement and how they plan to form a government of the Alliance partners. My latest latest stint and participation with efforts to create alliances was with the UPND. There was initially a bubble created and that bubble brought excitement among many Zambians but obviously the bubble had to burst to expose the emptiness and hypocrisy of those behind alliance creations. The grandiose pronouncement that proceed the formation of alliances burst in the faces of the originators leaving them stained and humiliated. I now hold a settled conviction that alliances cannot work for us in Zambia because, generally, the leaders who team up to try to form those alliances do so with underlying selfish interest. It appears to me that alliance partners at leadership level almost always focus only on becoming the leaders of such alliances. Those who are the majority in the alliances are also focused not on building the alliance but on ensuring that they underhandedly steal the support of the members of their alliance partners to boost tgeir own partisan numbers. If this trend continues until elections, then I am sorry to say that VJ could well be proven right come 2026.

Now let us move away from the challenges within PF and political alliances and consider those who left the PF because they were dissatisfied with what the PF had become. These people most probably voted for the UPND in frustration The question is has the PF taken time to try to mend fences with those who were disgruntled and or injured by what was going on in PF going into the 2021 elections? If not it means their dwindled numbers which led to their loss in 2021 elections are still the numbers they still have, or even less if one considers the fact that many political cadres follow power just to eat with those in power. Those dwindled numbers cannot therefore win the PF an election in 2026 as things stand.

Then come the many political parties which have stood for elections before. We have to admit if we are truthful that the impact of these political parties on the national psych has been less than encouraging. Most of them have no political numbers to talk about. This may not even be because they do not espouse good ideas for the development of our country. It could just be that Zambians have not warmed up to their ideals. But politics is a game of numbers and if we want to succeed we must frank and brutal about hiw we analyse polical realities. The brutal realities facing these parties is that they are unlikely to grow their support base within the next two years to effectively be viable alternatives to the UPND in 2026.

So again we see that VJ is right in saying there is currently no opposition to unseat the UPND party who currently in power, come 2026. The comment by VJ should therefore be seen as a clarion call to the opposition to sort out their differences and present a united and unshakable front to evacuate the UPND from office and land them into a political Intesive Care Unit where they will either die as apolitical party or recuperate and become an attractive political party again.

The position in The Zambia We Want Party. We agree with VJ that there is no doubt that the Zambian people are very dissatisfied with the UPND government. Of course we must admit that those who are getting direct benefits from the UPND in government will dispute this vehemently. It will not surprise me if they resort to insulting me and others who think like me because insults too is in the DNA of arrogant political parties. But truth must be told and it is this that the UPND have lost that humph that had initially attracted particularly the young generations to it. I have to say to the UPND

SADC REFUTES THE MISINFORMATION ON ADOPTION AND ENDORSEMENT OF ZAMBIAN CANDIDATE FOR AfDB PRESIDENCY

PRESS RELEASE

Correcting misinformation on the adoption and endorsement of SADC’s candidate for the position of the President of the AfDB Group

11th October 2024, Gaborone, Botswana: The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has noted with concern the misinformation in a recent news article published by the Sunday Times of South Africa, which makes allegations about the process that led to the adoption and endorsement of the SADC candidate for the position of the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group.

The news article titled: South Africa defies SADC on African Development Bank nomination, published by The Sunday Times of South Africa on 6th October 2024, alleges that SADC followed a new process in coming up with the regional candidate for the AfDB President.

The SADC Secretariat wishes to clarify that the allegations outlined in the news article are unfounded and false. We wish to inform that the discussion for the process used in coming up with the SADC candidate for the AfDB Presidency started back in 2022, during the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, which was held in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On 17 August 2024, during its 44th Summit of Heads of State and Government in Zimbabwe, the SADC Heads of State and Government endorsed Dr. Samuel M. Maimbo, a national of the Republic of Zambia, as the region’s sole candidate for the position of the Office of the President of the AfDB Group and urged SADC Member States to campaign for him and support him.
Seven nominated candidates from Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia were interviewed and Dr. Samuel M. Maimbo, was ranked first in position, and Ms. Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, a national of South Africa was in the second position.

The following represents the facts on this matter in summary:

• In August 2023 in Luanda, Angola, the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government adopted the recommendation from the SADC Council of Ministers, to implement a strategy which was proposed and adopted by the SADC Ministers of Finance and Investment, to SADC in its bid for the Office of the President of the AfDB Group, and directed the SADC Executive Secretary to coordinate the implementation of the Strategy. The Strategy included the development of the selection and evaluation criteria for the candidate and the establishment of an Independent Technical Committee to be approved by the SADC Ministers of Finance and Investment.

• In February 2024 the selection and evaluation criteria was approved by Member States through a round robin process. Member States also approved a Guidance Note on the establishment of the Independent Technical Committee for the selection and evaluation of SADC candidates for the office of the President of the African Development Bank.

• In March 2024 the SADC Executive Secretary invited Member States to nominate their candidates from the Southern Africa region of the AfDB for the office of the President of the African Development Bank.

• In June 2024 the SADC Executive Secretary constituted the Independent Technical Committee to assist the SADC Ministers of Finance in screening and evaluating the candidates based on the approved Selection and Evaluation criteria. The Technical Committee comprised Member States who did not submit nominees, namely the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles and Zimbabwe. The Independent Technical Committee met in July 2024 to screen, evaluate and rank the candidates, and its report was submitted to the SADC Ministers of Finance and Investment on 6 August 2024.

• On 15 August 2024 the SADC Ministers of Finance and Investment interviewed the seven nominated candidates to identify a suitable candidate for the Office of the President of the AfDB Group.

• On 16 August 2024 an extraordinary SADC Council of Ministers met and considered the Report of the SADC Ministers of Finance and Investment on the selection of a SADC candidate for the Office of the President of the AfDB Group. This included the interview report that was also presented to the SADC Council of Ministers for consideration. Council accordingly recommended the top candidate to the SADC Summit for endorsement.

• On 17 August, during its 44th Summit of Heads of State and Government, Summit endorsed Dr. Samuel M. Maimbo, as the region’s sole candidate for the position of the Office of the President of the AfDB Group and urged Member States to campaign for him and support him. Dr Maimbo is currently the Vice President for Budget, Performance Review and Strategic Planning at the World Bank Group since July 1, 2023 and his brief profile can be accessed from the SADC website:https://www.sadc.int/latest-news/sadc-endorse-dr-samuel-maimbo-candidate-afdb-presidency.

The allegations in The Sunday Times of South Africa are unfounded, misplaced and therefore refuted.

HH HAS DEMONSTRATED HIS AGENDA FOR THE YOUTH IN ZAMBIA , BUT HAPUNDA , M’MEMBE ARE PF WHO RAN DOWN THE ECONOMY. THEY HAVE ONLY GIVEN THEMSELVES A NICKNAME CALLED ,”SP” TO HIDE FROM PF FAILURES . BY REMOVING PF INCLUDING  HAPUNDA AND FRIENDS , YOUTHS STAMPED OUT CORRUPTION.

By Mark Simuuwe

I saw a contentless response from my brother Brian Hapunda in which the SP is ,in a subtle way , trying to manipulate my discourse on the youths , because they know that youths are the ones who brought in UPND .

Brian like Fred M’membe have no message for the people of Zambia . They do not even have a message for the same youths whom we are recruiting and empowering.

The two were part of PF benefiting from contracts in a capitalist way  yet they pretend to be Socialists .

Their views have been tried before in PF and they have failed , leaving us in debt mountain , stolen Ukwa bags being recovered , and closed mines which were supposed to be recruiting youths .

They even scrapped off meal allowances from the youths in universities because they did not care for the youths . They went for social media and closed Facebook during elections which the youths who supported the UPND were using during elections  because they knew that UPND relied on youths who are mostly online .

They further , increased the retirement age after imposing employment freeze , in which they stopped recruiting youths ; it is for this reason that the youths flushed them out of government in 2021 .

Now they have given themselves a nickname of “Socialists” , while they are enjoying capitalist backgrounds , to dupe youths into believing that they are a different group .

Youths ought to know that the SP are the same conmen who ran down the economy with PF .

UPND’s popularity is among the youths and this is why President Biden once said , “ youths in Zambia have stamped out corruption “. It is Hapunda and friends they stamped out , who is now back with another title .

President HH has confidence in youths and that is why his concentration is on youth empowerment , free education , skills training for youths including those who have not completed school , grants and artisanal support for youths , and recruitment, revamping mines for many youths to be recruited , agricultural grants for youths and increased CEEC allocation for increased number of beneficiaries, and even reinstated students meal allowances.

Further , It is Hapunda and M’membe’s corrupt PF which was being referred to  by President Biden .
These guys have not changed , they have only changed their surname to SP .

I challenge Brian to a TV or Radio debate on UPND achievements and solutions to the remaining  challenges on the UPND agenda.

Lungu believes Zesco tariff hike will worsen cost of living

Lungu believes Zesco tariff hike will worsen cost of living

FORMER president Edgar Lungu has predicted a higher increase in the cost of living than ever before in the country due to the increase in Zesco tariffs meant to reduce the long hours of load shedding by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB)

The former president described the increase in tariffs as “unpatriotic, inhumane, and truly shameful.”

“My caution to you is that life in Zambia, already under the heavy cloud of hunger, poverty, high unemployment, and citizen misery, is about to get worse in terms of the cost of living and rising prices,” he cautioned.

“This decision will negatively affect your home, my home, and our businesses.”

On Thursday, the ERB approved the national utility’s reapplication to hike electricity tariffs with consideration of tariff affordability, the impact of load shedding on Zambians, and the utility’s financial performance and viability.

ERB board chairperson James Banda said the new tariffs will provide relief to households and businesses.

Banda explained that in their application, Zesco proposed to reduce the tariffs for some residential and commercial customers, which will provide relief for low-income households and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as tariffs will be affordable too.

He said this measure will also assist in alleviating any huge financial impact that would arise from the increased tariffs as they will enable Zesco import sufficient power for the industries to ensure that these productive sectors remain sustainable during the Emergency period.

“Additionally, it was submitted by businesses during the public hearings that the cost of running diesel generators is way above the proposed tariff adjustment,” said Banda.

However, Lungu thinks otherwise and further encouraged citizens to vote against the UPND terming the policy as cruel.

“The golden rule is that when the cost of electricity rises just like diesel and petrol prices of basic commodities and food such as mealie meal, cooking oil, sugar, fertiliser, meat, vegetables, rentals, and transport automatically rise in tandem with the cost of energy. Our citizens carry and pay the harsh price.”

“This policy is cruel, as the government believes it is fair to milk small goats (citizens) all day without giving them any food or water,” said Lungu.

GOVERNMENT UNVEILS PLAN FOR MILITARY-LED ELECTRICITY GENERATION

GOVERNMENT UNVEILS PLAN FOR MILITARY-LED ELECTRICITY GENERATION

The Ministry of Defence has revealed plans to empower the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force, and Zambia National Service (ZNS) to start generating their own electricity beginning next year.

Defence Permanent Secretary, Mr Norman Chipakupaku said considering the country’s ongoing challenges with load shedding, it was imperative for the Defence Force to take proactive steps in assisting Government tackle the energy crisis by generating solar power which will also support the national grid.

Mr Chipakupaku stated that the initiative once implemented would help the military wings decrease their dependence on hydropower and ease some of the strain on the national grid.

He said this yesterday after commissioning solar power backup systems at three Defence Force Hospitals which include Arakan Military Hospital in Arakan Barracks, the Zambia Air Force Hospital at Air Force Headquarters, and the ZNS Charles Nyirenda Hospital in Makeni, Lusaka.

The initiative has been made possible through a donation from the United States Government in collaboration with the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ).

Mr Chipakupaku stated that the installation of the solar systems in hospitals will play a critical role in ensuring continuous and uninterrupted power supply to our healthcare facilities, particularly in remote areas.

“it is exciting to hear that with the installation of the solar backup system, our healthcare personnel will no longer depend on mobile phones to deliver quality services to patients as the intervention will tackle the challenges posed by power shortages, which frequently obstruct the provision of essential medical services,” Mr Chipakupaku said.

He added, “The Ministry of Defence also plans to transition from hydropower by enabling all military cantonments dotted across the country to produce their own energy, which means solarizing these facilities starting next year. We aim to begin supplying power to ZESCO.”

Mr Chipakupaku expressed heartfelt gratitude to the United States government for its generous donation, highlighting that it symbolizes the strong partnership between Zambia and the US.

He said the solar power backup system will ensure seamless operation of critical laboratory equipment, reduce results turnaround time (tat) for essential tests like HIV viral load, TB diagnostics and secure storage of life-saving medications
.
He stated that Government acknowledged that reliable energy is crucial for efficient health care delivery and further urged the three Sister Services to guard the backup systems jealously.

And USA Defense Attaché, Lieutenant Colonel Mathew Yan highlighted the collective resilience of the USA and Zambian governments in mitigating the adverse effects of power challenges on quality healthcare.

Lt Col Yan further disclosed that the USA government has invested more than $265 million through the Defense HIV and AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP) to help enhance health care services.

He said the initiative collaborates with 54 of Zambia’s 80 defense medical facilities, aiming to support around 500,000 healthcare beneficiaries, which include active-duty military personnel, their dependents, and Zambian civilians.

“I am honored to be your USA Defense Attache to the Republic of Zambia, and I remain committed to doing my part to continue enabling these great teams to work with Zambian military and health leaders to deliver the medical services your military and citizens need,” Lt Col Yan said.

At the same event, CIDRZ Chief Medical Officer Mrs Carolyn Bolton said her organization is dedicated to delivering sustainable and innovative solutions that align with the vision and needs of the Defense Force medical services.

And Charles J Nyirenda Hospital Commandant  Brigadier General Dr Perry Siachombe expressed his satisfaction with the new solar backup system, describing it as a game-changer for the hospital.

Gen Siachombe stated that the donation will enhance healthcare delivery not only for ZNS personnel but also for the surrounding community of over 28,000 people.

He said with the system in place, the hospital can now operate 24/7 without any power interruptions, ensuring uninterrupted quality healthcare services for patients.

The USA government, through the DHAPP and the USA President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), is funding the installation of solar backup systems in 60 Defence Force  Zambia hospitals with 34 sites so far having been completed, seven currently in progress, and the remaining 19 expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Ludacris Recalls Taking On Snoop Dogg In Studio Smoking Contest

0

Ludacris has looked back fondly on the time he challenged Snoop Dogg in a weed smoking contest, noting that “it was a hero moment.”

The Atlanta icon took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday (October 8) to reflect on the weed-heavy event and the 21st anniversary of his celebrated album Chicken-N-Beer.

He said: “Man, happy anniversary, first and foremost, to the Chicken-N-Beer album. I just wanna say thank you to all the fans for reminding me today. One of my favorite songs on that album has gotta be ‘Hoes in My Room.’ Now listen, this is my first time working with Snoop Dogg, always wanted to work with him. One of my heroes.

“I remember being out in LA and he told me to come by the studio and I had Poon Daddy with me. This the guy that I was on the radio with. Still friends to this day. Anybody that knows Poon knows he can out-smoke anybody.”

He continued: So now we going to Snoop’s studio, right. This is damn near the south versus the west. I’m not backing down, I know Poon’s not backing down. We get there, they start lighting up blunts. I’m talking like six, seven blunts in rotation all at one time. My man Bishop Don Magic Juan was there.

“Anyone knows Don Juan knows that he puts the blunt up to his nose and inhales and then tries to pass it to somebody else. I wasn’t hitting the booger blunt. I let it skip me, but I was hitting every other blunt that came around. So was Poon. Of course Snoop was as he’s writing his verse.”

Luda concluded: “I say an hour went past, everybody still smoking. Two hours go past, he’s almost done. For the first time in my life I look at Poon and I see him get passed a blunt and he goes ‘Poon tapped out.’

“I thought I’d never see it in my entire life. So now it’s just me and Snoop. I out-smoked Poon Daddy for the first time. I will not say I out-smoked Snoop, but it was one of the hero moments with me to be in the studio with Snoop Dogg. I love you with all my heart.”

T.I. Announces Plans To Retire After Jingle Ball 2024 Performance

0

T.I. is a certified legend. His run in the 2000s is one of the best put together by a Southern rapper. If he retired a decade ago, he would still go down as a GOAT candidate to many. And it seems like the notion of packing up is finally sounding good to T.I. based on his recent radio appearance. The rapper went on 96.1 to discuss his future, and he announced that he will no longer be putting on concerts for fans. In a surprisingly sincere display, T.I. stated that Jingle Ball 2024 will mark the last time he steps foot on stage.

T.I.’s announcement was prefaced by him wiping his eyes. “I appreciate y’all,” he told the 96.1 hosts. “Offering me my last working gig.

I do not need the money anymore and I will not be performing.” The hosts were taken aback by the rapper’s stance, and proceeded to ask additional questions. The man born Clifford Harris was steadfast in his plan. “I don’t wanna do it anymore,” he asserted. “I don’t want people to pay me to hop around and sweat for they entertainment anymore.” T.I.’s last performance will take place at State Farm Arena on December 19. The rapper is slated to perform on a Jingle Ball lineup that includes T-Pain, Sexyy Red, Tinashae and Khalid.

T.I.’s decision to step back from performing should not be too much of a surprise for fans. The rapper has been teasing his retirement for a while. He told Baller Alert that he planned to drop two albums to mark his retirement back in 2023. “My last album is Kill the King, which will be, you know, it’s gon’ be edgy, energetic,” he explained. “So I’ma end up doing two albums. One will be Kiss the King, and the other will be Kill the King.” It’s taken a while for these albums to come together, and we’ve yet to get release dates for either, but T.I. seems serious.

T.I. alluded to the other reason he won’t be performing live during the 96.1 interview. He told the hosts he didn’t have to anymore, and he wasn’t kidding. T.I. and his wife recently won a $71 million lawsuit against MGA Entertainment. The couple alleged that the company had violated the intellectual property of a girl group they’d previously launched, OMG Girlz, and MGA was forced to pay up. “I mean, wow,” T.I.P. told Rolling Stone after the ruling. “They did more than I thought they would. They blessed us more than beyond.”

Kanye West Reportedly Living “Upper-Class Homeless” In Tokyo While Crafting New Album

0

Kanye West is still spending a lot of time in Tokyo, and we now have some new theories and information as to why. Moreover, hip-hop journalist Touré reportedly spoke to TMZ about the matter on Friday (October 11), and he suggested that Ye is living an “upper-class homeless” lifestyle. This is because he’s still staying at a hotel rather than up-keeping a home, which is apparently what he prefers. Not only that, but Touré also reportedly claimed that the Chicago artist is hunkered down in his hotel room working on his next solo album Bully, which will apparently be self-produced.

Also, one of the music writer’s alleged sources reportedly spoke on how the Yeezy mogul isn’t bothered in the Japanese city thanks to respectful fans letting him quietly roam alone, a sharp contrast to the paparazzi presence in Los Angeles. Elsewhere, though, Kanye West’s presence in Tokyo raised some eyebrows for fans, as his wife Bianca Censori didn’t accompany him for a couple of outings. Divorce rumors quickly followed, although they axed this speculation with a recent shopping trip this week.

Speaking of Bianca Censori, Kanye West’s former alleged “Director of Intelligence” anonymously sued him for lack of payment and infliction of emotional distress. The plaintiff alleges that Ye originally hired him as his campaign manager for his presidency bid, and that he ordered him to investigate Censori and the Kardashians. While the man didn’t specify why he allegedly followed the G.O.O.D. Music artist’s current wife around without her knowledge, he did allege that Kanye wanted him to look into his previous wife’s family’s alleged “criminal links” over alleged sex trafficking.

Elsewhere in the world of Kanye West, some vault leftovers continue to emerge every once in a while, such as a recent leak of the unreleased music video for “RoboCop.” As for his current Tokyo stay, we hope that he continues to find peace and focus on his craft rather than on his antics and controversies. Of course, there’s no shortage of those these days. But perhaps this distance and seclusion will result in a new, better, and more healed era for the divisive superstar.

PF ALIGNED SURROGATES, PRAISE SINGERS AND FINISHED OFFICIALS MUST RESPECT THE RULE OF LAW

0

PF ALIGNED SURROGATES, PRAISE SINGERS AND FINISHED OFFICIALS MUST RESPECT THE RULE OF LAW.

“They Must Know, Upnd Teyapamaka, UPND IS For Intellectuals”

The recent statement by the Patriotic Front – PF Youth Wing in Central Province is a clear misrepresentation of the facts on the ground. It’s worth noting that, under the able leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema , the rule of law is indeed taking its course, and no one is above the law.

The arrest of Honourable Raphael Nakachinda and other PF members is not a case of political persecution as being perceived or purported by the PF people, but rather a consequence of vivid and clear wrongdoing by themselves. If the case is bondable, as being claimed, then the due process will unfold accordingly without any manipulation. It’s crucial to respect the independence of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies.

The finished PF Youth Wing’s accusations of unnecessary arrests and persecution of political opponents to the UPND government are unfounded and divisive and calls for all well meaning citizens to rubbish them without a second thought. President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration has demonstrated a commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law. Under his leadership, it’s no longer the rule of men as it used to be under the brutal regime of former president Edgar Chagwa Lungu

Instead of making inflammatory statements, the finished PF Youth Wing in question should encourage their leaders to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and allow justice to take its course. They must not also forget that tables have turned and we in the UPND are calling the shorts. Therefore, it’s very imperative for them to take note of that.

Citizens are also encouraged to take note of the following Key Points:

  • Respect for the Rule of Law: The government’s actions are guided by the law, and no one is above the law. Imagine a country where the rule of law is not followed. What would it be like?
  • Independence of Judiciary and Law Enforcement Agencies: These institutions should be allowed to operate independently, without interference or intimidation. Imagine a country where these agencies are manipulated and told what to do. What type of country will Zambia become?
  • Due Process_: If Honourable Nakachinda’s case and others is bondable, they will be released accordingly.

For now, let’s allow the law to take its course.

Ramaphosa won’t be charged over farm scandal – SA prosecutor

South African prosecutors say they will not pursue criminal charges against President Cyril Ramaphosa in relation to the controversial farm theft scandal that nearly brought down the president two years ago.

A former spy chief laid a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa, accusing him of committing irregularities in trying to hide the theft of $4m (£3.25m) in cash at his game farm in the north-eastern Limpopo province.

The president denied any wrongdoing, saying that the money stolen from his sofa in 2020 came from the legitimate sale of buffaloes at his Phala Phala farm.

The decision not to bring any charges against Ramaphosa or anyone else came after “a comprehensive investigation process”, prosecutors said.

Ramaphosa survived the so-called “farmgate” scandal and was re-elected as president in June, albeit after being forced to form a coalition, while the criminal investigations were still ongoing.

In 2022, his African National Congress (ANC) used its majority to block an impeachment motion against him over the scandal.

Last year, the anti-corruption watchdog cleared Ramaphosa amid calls for him to resign.

Arthur Fraser, who headed the state security agency between 2016 and 2018, claimed that Ramaphosa hid the farm theft from police and tax authorities and instead organised the kidnapping and questioning of the robbers in an attempt to silence them.

The president was also accused of money laundering, tax evasion and breaching foreign currency laws over the cash, which was in US dollars.

Ramaphosa acknowledged the burglary but denied the criminal allegations, saying he had reported the break-in to the police.

He has also disputed the amount of money involved and said it came from legitimate sales of game from his animal-breeding farm.

The highly publicised burglary threw Ramaphosa’s government into turmoil ahead of a crucial party leadership vote.

But an investigation into the matter has found insufficient evidence of corruption and money laundering, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Thursday.

In a statement, Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo Ivy Thenga said the decision not to prosecute Ramaphosa was taken after a “careful assessment” of all available evidence presented to the prosecutors by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

“The available evidence presented to prosecutors cannot sustain any charge,” NPA spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said.

The probe also covered any possible contravention of income tax and exchange control regulations, the prosecutor added.

The case against three people accused of breaking into Ramaphosa’s farm is set to continue next month.

They appeared at a Limpopo court earlier this week on several charges, including money laundering and house-breaking.

Eritrea, Egypt and Somalia cement ‘axis against Ethiopia’

0

The leaders of Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea – countries which all have strained relations with Ethiopia – have been meeting in the Eritrean capital, Asmara.

An Eritrean statement wrapping up the summit made reference to “respect for the sovereignty… and territorial integrity of the countries in the region”.

This could be taken as a pointed reference to landlocked Ethiopia’s ambitions for access to a sea port, but the country was not specifically mentioned.

A recent diplomatic disagreement has pushed Somalia into closer ties with Egypt and Eritrea, both of which have long-standing disputes with Ethiopia.

There have been fears that the growing tension could spill over into some sort of conflict.

“This is an axis against [Ethiopian capital] Addis Ababa,” Hassan Khannenje, director of the Horn International Institute for Strategic Studies, told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme.

“I think it’s an attempt to bring the hate together in trying to increase pressure against Addis Ababa.”

But Somalia’s Information Minister Daud Aweis denied this saying that the meeting was only about co-operation between the three countries.

“We are not determined to instigate anything against Addis Ababa,” he told Focus on Africa.

“Addis Ababa is our neighbour we have been co-operating together for a long time, although later on their leadership came up with a factor of instability in the region. But still we stand for peace and we don’t think that such a meeting in Asmara has anything to do with Ethiopia.”

A photograph released by Eritrea in the wake of the meeting shows President Isaias Afwerki clasping hands with his counterparts from Egypt, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, and Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

A statement said the three men had “agreed to… enhance the Somali state institutions to confront various internal and external challenges and to enable the Somali National Federal Army to confront terrorism in all is forms”.

This was Sisi’s first visit to Asmara, while the Somali president had already been three times this year.

Ethiopia has for years been a staunch backer of the government in Mogadishu in its fight against al-Qaeda-linked militant group al-Shabab.

But Somalia is furious that Ethiopia signed a preliminary deal at the beginning of this year with the self-declared republic of Somaliland to lease a section of its coastline. Somalia sees Somaliland as part of its territory.

Meanwhile, Addis Ababa and Cairo have been at loggerheads for more than a decade over Ethiopia’s construction of a vast hydroelectric dam on the River Nile. Egypt sees this as a possible threat to the volume of water flowing down the river, which it relies on.

Last month, an Egyptian ship delivered a significant consignment of military equipment to Somalia. This came after two Egyptian military planes landed in the Somalia capital with arms and ammunition in August.

In 2018, it was hoped that the fractious relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which followed the bloody border war two decades earlier, were over.

It was then that Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed signed a “declaration of peace and friendship” with Eritrea.

The agreement won him the Nobel Peace Prize the following year.

But ties between the Horn of Africa neighbours again deteriorated following the end of the two-year civil war in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, which borders Eritrea.

Asmara had been an ally of the Ethiopian government in that conflict but has been lukewarm about the accord that ended the fighting in November 2022.

Relations were further aggravated by Abiy’s pronouncement last year that his country wanted to secure access to a port on the Red Sea.

Kenya’s president makes urgent cash call for Haiti mission

0

Kenya has appealed for urgent financial support from the international community to sustain a police deployment in Haiti, which has been extended by a year.

The multinational security mission, which began in June, is helping fight gangs controlling much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and nearby areas.

More than 3,600 people have been killed in the country since January, including over 100 children, while more than 500,000 Haitians have been forced from their homes, the UN said.

“We are asking the international community to match their commitment and their pledges with the necessary action for us to be able to complete the task ahead of us,” Kenya’s President William Ruto said on Friday.

He was speaking after a meeting in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, with Haiti’s Prime Minister Garry Conille.

Violence in Haiti is still rife and a UN human rights expert has warned that gangs are targeting new areas, causing further displacement.

Kenya deployed 400 of its pledged 1,000 police officers in June and July this year.

On Friday, President Ruto said the remaining 600 are undergoing training and would join the mission next month.

*Kenyan police taunted as they square up to Haiti’s gangs

*Haiti vows to restore order with Kenya-led force’s help

A handful of other countries have together pledged at least 1,900 more officers.

Although the mission was approved by the UN security council, it is not a UN operation and relies on voluntary financial contributions.

Only $85m (£65m) of the mission’s estimated $600m required annually for its operation has been received so far through a trust fund set up by the UN, according to Human Rights Watch.

It is not clear how much money has been spent so far but Ruto says more financial support is needed to “sustain” the mission until October next year.

“When resources are made available, there will be demonstrable progress of the mission,” President Ruto.

Ruto said that the available funds would run out by March next year.

“We have a window of success that is evident from the operations that have been carried out already,” the president added.

He said the deployment was already showing positive results – “restoring hope and a glimpse of stability”.

Conille asked international partners to send the officers they had pledged to ensure the “contingent from Kenya has the resources they need”.

The Haitian prime minister denied reports that the Kenyan police officers were staying in camps like tourists while the gangs were tightening their grip on large swathes of Port-au-Prince, since the mission began.

“I have personally been on patrol with the Kenyan troops who have engaged in delicate operations in the city centre. They are involved in patrolling universities, hospitals and administrative areas,” Conille said.

“They are also up north to help address the threat with the gangs.”

Last month, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the mission for another year and rejected calls from Haiti on transforming it into a UN peacekeeping mission.

A UN human rights expert who has just been to the Caribbean nation said the mission was inadequately equipped and needed helicopters, as well as night vision goggles and drones.

“The Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), authorised by the UN Security Council in October 2023, has so far deployed less than a quarter of its planned contingent,” William O’Neil said last month.

Dr. Dre is being sued for at least $10 million by a divorce psychotherapist

Music mogul, Dr. Dre is being sued for at least $10 million by a psychotherapist in Southern California over claims he subjected him to a “systematic and malicious” barrage of “unbearable harassment” that left him wearing a bulletproof vest and fearing for his life.

In a new lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Dr. Charles Sophy alleges Dre, born Andre Young, hired him in 2018 to mediate the breakdown of his decades-long marriage to his now ex-wife, Nicole Young. Sophy says he worked “diligently, independently and fairly” to help the couple resolve their disputes and ceased communication with Dre when the pair reached a settlement in late 2021.

The doctor says that about 14 months later, Dre started texting him out of the blue with allegations the doctor had somehow acted improperly — allegations the doctor denies.

“Rather than treating the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, Young decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy — frustrations that manifested themselves in the form of a nearly year-long sustained campaign of late-night texts, threats of intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric,” the lawsuit states.

In a statement, Dre’s lawyer Howard King tells Rolling Stone that Dre previously filed a “confidential complaint” against Sophy with the Osteopathic Medical Board of California last year seeking “to get Dr. Sophy punished for dereliction of duties and incredible incompetence.”

“That complaint seeks revocation of Dr. Sophy’s license to provide mental health counseling to needy patients. In gross violation of all applicable standards of care, Dr. Sophy inserted himself into a contentious divorce while he simultaneously ‘treated’ not only Mr. and Mrs. Young, but their children. He was terminated when it was revealed that he was encouraging one of their children to take sides against Mr. Young, even encouraging his son to go to the press with false allegations in order to force a financial settlement that he recommended,” King claims in the statement. “Dr. Sophy has consistently rebuffed Medical Board attempts to investigate these claims, but has now filed this desperate suit while the noose of the Medical Board is tightening.”

According to Sophy’s 22-page lawsuit signed by his lawyer Christopher Frost and obtained by Rolling Stone, Sophy says Dre sent him an “overtly threatening” text around 10 p.m. on Feb. 16, 2023, in which he claimed someone told him something “disturbing” and that Sophy was “going to have to pay for that.” Sophy says he replied, “Excuse me,” and shortly after that, Dre allegedly responded, “Yes you,” and, “You’re a piece of shit.”

Sophy says he “tried to remain calm” and attempted to “defuse the situation.” He says he responded the next day with, “Good morning I have no idea what you are referring to and would make myself available to discuss anytime. Thank you.” He says Dre “doubled down” with a follow-up message that read, “You fucked up!! Just so you know, I love being underestimated.”

Sophy says Dre “falsely accused” him of trying to turn an unidentified third party against him. He says Dre “wrongfully accused” him of acting improperly during the divorce mediation.

“There is no truth behind these baseless and far-fetched accusations,” the new lawsuit states. “Dr. Sophy tried to let the threats go and not pursue them. Young however, would not let go.”

According to the complaint, Dre sent another text on March 5, 2023, that read, “What happened Doc? I thought you wanted to talk. Cat go your tongue? You’re going to have to give me a written apology. If not, I’m moving forward. I’m not playing, trust me.”

Sophy claims that in June 2023, Dre tried to force him to unlawfully disclose confidential information obtained during a therapy session with a third party. Sophy says he refused and “again tried to stay calm and hope that Young’s threats, harassment and intimidation would stop.”

On Aug. 4, 2023, Dre sent another “disturbing and chilling text message” in which he allegedly threatened, “Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten about you,” the lawsuit states. Sophy claims the “particularly sinister” text left him “more fearful for his life than ever before.”

The doctor claims that in February 2023, “immediately after the initial texts were sent,” he received a strange call from a security guard at his gated community saying individuals claiming to be FBI agents were “requesting to be led into Dr. Sophy’s residence to ‘talk’ to him.”

The doctor says he believes the people were impersonating agents to gain access to his residence and “send the unmistakable message” that Sophy wasn’t safe even in “the sanctity of his home.”

“Dr. Sophy lives in constant fear. He wears a bulletproof vest anytime he steps foot outside, is afraid to leave his home and is constantly looking over his shoulder. The egregiousness of Young’s persistent harassing behavior has compelled Dr. Sophy to seek redress and protection,” the lawsuit states.

“Nobody should have to live in constant fear. But Dr. Sophy does — ironically for no other reason than he tried to help Young to resolve his own family’s conflict.”

The lawsuit includes claims for civil harassment, threat of violence based on his sexual orientation, and a court order prohibiting contact.

He’s seeking compensatory damages of at least $10 million and punitive damages to be decided at trial.

Roy Keane says he has ‘given up’ on Manchester United

0

Manchester United legend, Roy Keane has claimed that he’s ‘given up’ on the club as he questioned the ‘culture’ at the club amid their struggling form.

The Red Devils have endured an extremely disappointing start to the campaign, with pressure beginning to mount on Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag has led the 13-time Premier League champions to their worst-ever start in the competition, as they sit 14th in the table on just eight points from seven matches.

Speaking on Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, he said: ‘After the Twente game. A really poor game. When you’ve got players coming out and saying ‘I think they might have wanted it more than us’. I kind of gave up at that stage.

‘If that’s the noises coming out of the dressing room, then no wonder the manager is in trouble and no wonder they’re not going to win football matches. But that’s where United are – it’s hit and miss.

‘They will win a few games but they’re going to lose plenty. I’m not sure there is a team there. I’d love to know what the culture is like at the training ground, who’s putting demands on each other, who’s pushing each other, who’s helping the younger players.

‘Are the senior players proper and wanting to get the job done against FC Twente instead of coming out and saying they wanted it more’.

For their recent draw against Aston Villa, Ten Hag opted to drop centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt in favour of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans.

Speaking on that decision, Keane said: ‘You can’t keep going back to the lads who are part of the problem. But if you think Maguire is the answer… The new lads need a chance.

‘Build up relationships. Get used to each other. He’s taken them off during games and he’s pretty stubborn. You have to be like that amanagerger’.

Keane spent 13 years at United, where he won seven league titles as the Red Devils dominated the early years of the Premier League.

Comparing the United that he was part of to the modern United side under Ten Hag, he claimed that the Red Devils ‘have gone backwards’.

He continued: ‘United was always about good people and good characters who could deal with playing for the club, but I don’t see that now. I don’t recognise this team and I don’t recognise the club.

‘People a couple of months ago were saying they’ve got new people coming on board and they’ll have all the answers. They’ve spent more money on recruitment but they’ve gone backwards.

‘When we discuss United, it’s more like a business but it’s a football club.

A football club is about the people who turn up and put a shift in. What I see at United, might be a bit harsh, I’m not sure I’m seeing good football people in there making the right decisions for the club’

Cameroon bans media talk of President’s health

0

Cameroon’s government has issued a ban preventing the media from discussing the health of President Paul Biya, Africa’s second-longest-ruling leader, following widespread rumours that the 91-year-old leader is gravely ill. According to a document obtained by AFP, the order was issued as concerns grow over Biya’s absence from public appearances since early September.

The directive, dated October 9 and signed by Territorial Administration Minister Paul Atanga Nji, emphasized the sensitivity of the president’s health as a matter of national security. “The head of state is the principal institution of the republic, and discussions on his condition are a matter of national security,” the document read.

It went on to warn that any media outlet discussing Biya’s health would face legal consequences, adding that regional governors were instructed to create monitoring units to track media content, including on social media. “All discussion in the media on the president’s condition is therefore officially banned,” the document stated. It also bore a red stamp reading “highly urgent”, indicating the severity of the government’s response to the rumours.

Biya, who is currently the world’s oldest serving leader, has ruled Cameroon for more than 41 years. His absence from public view over the past month has sparked speculation about his health, particularly after he missed the United Nations General Assembly and a summit of French-speaking countries in Paris. The last time he was seen in public was at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing in September.

In an attempt to quell rumours, the president’s office issued a statement on Tuesday, insisting that Biya was in “excellent health” and dismissing the speculation as “disinformation”. The statement further added that the president is currently working from Geneva and would return to Cameroon “in the coming days”.

Despite these reassurances, concerns remain due to Biya’s increasingly rare public appearances in recent years, which have been limited to pre-recorded speeches and occasional family photographs or videos alongside his wife, Chantal Biya.

The ban on media discussions surrounding Biya’s health underscores the fragility of the political situation in Cameroon, where Biya has maintained a firm grip on power since 1982. His long tenure is second only to that of Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, who has ruled for 45 years.

Over 5,700 American children undergo transgender surgery in five years

0

A new database has revealed that over 5,700 minors in the U.S. underwent gender-affirming surgeries between 2019 and 2023.

Fox News and the New York Post reported on Wednesday, October 9, that the database, launched by an advocacy group Do No Harm, tracks where children are receiving treatments like puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries for gender dysphoria.

The searchable database is called “Does My Hospital Transition Kids?” and was launched earlier in the week.

The report shows that a total of 13,994 minors received gender-affirming care during the four-year period.

Researchers identified 5,747 unique minors who underwent gender-affirming surgeries, including mastectomies and genital reassignment procedures.

In addition, 8,579 children received puberty blockers or hormone replacement therapy, with over 60,000 prescriptions issued in total.

The data was collected from insurance claims across the country, excluding some health plans like Kaiser and self-pay.

The insurance claims for these treatments, covering roughly 14,000 patients, amounted to $119 million, according to the new report.

The database’s analysis by state highlights significant regional variations in transgender medical care.

The database also highlights that the cost of medical care for these treatments reached $119 million, with California alone accounting for more than $28 million from 2,000 patients.

Irreversible surgeries were more common in certain states. In California, 1,359 minors underwent surgical procedures, followed by 357 in Oregon, 330 in Washington, 316 in Pennsylvania, and 300 in Massachusetts.

Do No Harm’s findings suggest that these numbers may be underestimated, and the group aims to provide the public, policymakers, and researchers with clearer insights into gender-affirming care for minors.

The chairman of Do No Harm, Stanley Goldfarb, in a press conference about the database, said, “We’ve really been meticulous in trying to make sure that the data are as clear as possible and are as accurate as possible.

“If anything, we’re showing the lower limits of what’s going on… to be certain that we’re not overstating it one iota. We’re probably and almost certainly understating the nature of the problem.”

Activist Chloe Cole, who detransitioned after receiving gender-affirming treatment as a minor, criticized the medical field, claiming that “thousands of kids are being treated like guinea pigs for unproven medical experiments.”

Cole underwent a double mastectomy at 15 years old and put on puberty blockers and testosterone at age 13.

“I hope politicians and parents alike use this database to see where these treatments are happening and protect their children from being rushed into irreversible, life-altering treatments,” Cole said in a statement.

Barack Obama calls Trump’s policies ‘cr@zy’ in his rally for Kamala Harris

0

Former US President, Barack Obama lashed out at “cr@zy” Donald Trump on Thursday night, October 10 and urged voters to back Kamala Harris as he brought his ‘’star power” to the 2024 election campaign trail for the first time.

As he campaigned in the must-win state of Pennsylvania, Obama also chided Black male voters for what he called hesitancy in supporting Democrat Harris because they “just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president.”

Obama trained his fire on Trump during a pumped-up rally in Pittsburgh, comparing the Republican’s long speeches to late Cuban communist leader Fidel Castro’s and calling the billionaire out of touch with ordinary people.

Obama admitted that “this election’s going to be tight” as many voters were still struggling with high prices.

“What I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump will shake things up”, adding: “You think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper?’

The popular Democrat called Trump’s schemes to sell bibles as “cr@zy” and used the same word to describe the 78-year-old former leader’s embrace of conspiracy theories.

As the crowd booed Trump, his successor in the White House, Obama added: “Don’t boo — vote.”

“Kamala is as prepared for the job as any nominee for president has ever been,” he added.

Vice President Harris’s campaign said Obama’s appearance, the first in a series in battleground states before the November 5 election, was designed to get people out to vote in crucial Pennsylvania.

Obama’s focus was the male voters who might be attracted by Trump’s masculine appeal.

“I’m sorry gentlemen, I’ve noticed this, especially with some men who seem to think Trump’s behaviour, the bullying and the putting people down, is a sign of strength,” he said.

Saying he had some “truths” that he wanted the Black community to hear, Obama said that “You’re coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses, I’ve got a problem with that.”

“Because part of it makes me think — and I’m speaking to men directly — part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president,” Obama said

Harris was in Nevada for a town hall hosted by the Spanish language network Univision Thursday and later spoke at a rally in Arizona.

When a woman asked Harris at the town hall to name three of Trump’s virtues, she replied: “I think Donald Trump loves his family, and I think that’s very important…. But I don’t really know him, to be honest with you. I don’t have much more to offer you.”

Diddy to remain in prison as s3x trafficking trial begins May 5 2025

0

Music mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs will remain in jail as his s3x trafficking case is scheduled to start on May 5, 2025.

Less than a month after the rapper was arrested at a New York City hotel on charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and using transportation to engage in prostitution, he appeared before a judge during a status hearing on October 10.

During the hearing, Judge Arun Subramanian, who was reassigned the case earlier this month, replacing Andrew L. Carter Jr. set a trial date for May 5, 2025.

The hearing comes just one day after lawyers for Combs filed a new appeal seeking bail for the rapper, who has remained in custody at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York for three weeks—arguing that concerns he would “intimidate” witnesses for the upcoming trial were “unfounded,” according to court documents.

The filing, submitted Oct. 9, argued that Judge Carter’s denial of Combs’ previous appeal for bail was based on “speculation,” and not on evidence that he would actually interfere with his criminal investigation. Combs’ lawyers Alexandra A.E. Shapiro and Jason A. Driscoll further argued that the rapper’s travel to New York to face his criminal charges last month, along with their proposal of monitoring (which includes no access to phones, internet, and even video surveillance when necessary) while outside of custody helped support his release from jail, adding that their client is “presumed innocent.”

“He took extraordinary steps to demonstrate that he intended to face and contest the charges, not flee,” the filing said. “He presented a bail package that would plainly stop him from posing a danger to anyone or contacting any witnesses.”

Despite the appeal, Judge Subramanian stated that Combs will remain in custody during the Oct. 10 hearing.

Per the federal indictment released after his Sept. 16 arrest, Combs is been accused of participating in sexual performances, dubbed “Freak Offs” that occurred for hours or even days. During these circumstances, prosecutors alleged the 54-year-old “arranged, directed, masturbated during, and often electronically recorded.”

Combs is also accused of having “distributed a variety of controlled substances, in part to keep the victims obedient and compliant,” according to the filing, as well as using “force, threats of force, and coercion” to get victims to “engage in extended sexual acts with male commercial sex workers.”

Combs has since pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.

The rapper will stay in the Brooklyn jail until his May 5 trial.

Woman has been jailed for life after mũ3dering her parents and living with their bodies in the family home for four years

A woman has been jailed for life after mũ3dering her parents and living with their bodies in the family home for four years.

Virginia McCullough, 36, poisoned her father John, 70, with prescription medication, before stabbing her mother Lois, 71, in the chest at their home in Chelmsford, Essex.

Their deaths happened sometime in June 2019, but their bodies were not discovered until 2023 after their GP raised concerns about missed appointments.

In that time McCullough had hidden their remains and continued to live there, building a “makeshift tomb” for her father, while telling friends and neighbours that they had moved away, were unwell, or had gone on lengthy trips.
On Friday, October 11, she was sentenced to a life term, with a minimum of 36 years, after pleading guilty to two counts of murder at Chelmsford Crown Court in July.

McCullough confessed “moments after” police were called to the family home following the report from the GP.

Bodycam footage of the arrest showed police forcing entry to the property before confronting McCullough in a hallway.

She appeared almost nonchalant in the footage, telling officers she would “cooperate” and calmly confessing to her crimes.

When asked by police, she said: “My dad’s body is in there.”

An officer then asked: “What about your mum?”

McCullough calmly replied: “[That’s] a little bit more complicated… upstairs there are about five wardrobes, it’s behind the bed at the back, next to the sink. It’s the second one.”

In reference to the arrest, she told officers: “I did know that this would kind of come eventually. It’s proper that I serve my punishment.”

She added: “Cheer up, at least you caught the bad guy.”

McCullough later told officers where the murder weapon was.

Referencing the knife she used to stab her mother, she said: “It’s in the middle underneath the stairs, it will still have blood on it, it’s rusted, but it will still have blood traces on it.”

Essex Police said documents found at the address “built a picture of a woman who was trying desperately to keep her parents from discovering the depth of the financial black hole she continued to dig, while giving them false assurances about her employment and future prospects”.

Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby described McCullough as someone who “lied about almost every aspect of her life”.

He said McCullough had been “maintaining a charade to deceive everyone close to her and clearly taking advantage of her parents’ goodwill”.

“She is an intelligent manipulator who chose to kill her parents callously, without a thought for them or those who continue to suffer as a result of their loss,” he added.

Prosecutor Lisa Wilding KC told the court that McCullough “built a makeshift tomb” for her father, which was “covered with multiple blankets, and a number of pictures and paintings over the top”.

It was also described in court as a “homemade mausoleum”, and was in a ground floor room which had been her father’s bedroom and study, “composed with masonry blocks stacked together”.

McCullough “concealed the body of her mother, wrapped in a sleeping bag, within a wardrobe in her mother’s bedroom on the top floor of the property,” the barrister said.

While in the dock, McCullough began to cry as the prosecution read out an account she gave to officers where she described the moments before she killed her mother.

She said: “[Her mother] just looked so innocent with her back turned against the wall.

“She was listening to the radio, she wasn’t doing anything.”

McCullough also told police she had to “build up gumption” to kill her mother as “I knew I had to get it done”.

UPND HAS MISERABLY FAILED TO ADDRESS POWER CRISIS- Fred M’membe

UPND HAS MISERABLY FAILED TO ADDRESS POWER CRISIS

…..its five solutions to the prevailing energy crisis are a failed project, says Dr M’membe

Lusaka… Friday October 11, 2024

Socialist Party President Dr Fred M’membe says the UPND government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema has miserably failed to address the current energy crisis in the country.

Speaking in Lusaka, Friday afternoon, Dr. Member said the outlined five solutions by the government through the Minister of Energy are not giving any hope of ending the current power crisis.

He said it is shocking that the UPND government has established load management as part of the solutions of ending the current power deficit.

Dr. M’membe observed the need for the country to construct more hydro power stations in the northern circuit which is endowed with a lot of water.

“On 24th July 2024, the Minister of Energy outlined the UPND government solutions to the current energy crisis. The first one, the Minister (Energy) said they will bring in more procurement which means more power imports. And he said Zesco has negotiated the procurement from ESCOM of South Africa and from Zimbabwe and they expect to feed the grid about 218MW from South Africa and Zimbabwe. The second one, is the deployment of diesel generators. They said they are buying diesel generators to provide an additional 90MW and they said the first 12MW would be secured by August 2024 some two months ago,” he stated.

“The third one, they promised to  accelerate private sector investment in new power generation capacity. But when, how, who, where have not been undefined. And they are expecting to get about 120MW through solar. They are further expecting to increase another 300MW from Maamba Collieries using NAPSA money to fund the private sector venture.”

He wondered where government through Zesco will get the money to fund the net metering project.

“They are saying there will be free tax imports for solar equipment effective 1st August 2024. They are also talking about net metering initiative and they have to pay for that electricity, where will they get the money? They have put loadshedding as part of the solutions to the current power deficit,” he added.

Dr. M’membe who has called for an immediate stoppage to power exports amidst power crisis, said Zesco’s major problem is not transmission but production.

He said his administration will endeavour to construct more power stations in the northern circuit where there is plenty of water.

“Most of the hydro power stations in the country are based in Southern Province. We can’t abandon hydro power stations, even countries such as China are still relying on hydro power generation. What we need to do is to do more dams in Luapula, Northern and  parts of Muchinga provinces because we have plenty of water in the northern circuit,” he said.

The Socialist Party President further observed that the mining sector remains the biggest consumer of electricity in the country with about 51% of the total generated power in the country.

“Zambia has installed energy generation capacity of 3, 777MW, 83% hydro, 9% coal, 5% heavy fuel oil & 3% solar. National peak demand is reported to be 2, 400MW while available power generation is only 1, 040MW resulting in power deficit of 1, 360MW. Only 43% of Zambia population have access to electricity (67% urban areas and 14.5% in rural areas). The mining sector is the biggest consumer of electricity of 51% of the total generated electricity,” he said.

“With nearly 70% of energy consumed by households in Zambia is coming from firewood and charcoal. And during this power crisis, this has worsened. This is a thréat to deforestation.”

He said this loadshedding has worked against small business holders and that economic activities have reduced.

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA TO SOON COMMISSION ZAMBIA’S $14 MILLION SPACE DATA STATION

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA TO SOON COMMISSION ZAMBIA’S $14 MILLION SPACE DATA STATION

…….As Government makes strides towards the commissioning of the Station

October 11, 2024

CHIBOMBO – In a significant leap towards integrating advanced technology for national development, the government has successfully completed the test phase of the US$14 million Ground Receiving Station in Chibombo District.

During the tour by Mr. Mutati, the facility, a unit under the National Remote Sensing Center, is already receiving vital data from space, which is being expertly analyzed to aid decision-making across multiple sectors.

Hon. Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, affirmed the completion and functionality of the Ground Receiving Station following a successful test phase.

In his remarks after touring the facility, Mutati emphasized President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology as a driver of economic and social development in Zambia.

“This station is already making a difference by enabling us to gather critical data. It is now helping our experts from the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) analyze this information to inform key policies,” Mutati said.

The Ground Receiving Station is set to revolutionize how Zambia tackles issues in health, agriculture, mining, and climate prediction, among other sectors.

Access to space data will enable accurate resource mapping, weather forecasting, and potentially reveal new mineral deposits—a significant step for a country looking to optimize its natural resources.

The facility’s success is bolstered by partnerships with Swedish and American experts, alongside collaboration with Zambia’s leading universities and other international stakeholders.

Minister Mutati clarified that while Zambia does not have immediate plans to launch its own satellite, it will continue leveraging data from nations with satellites already in orbit.

A visiting astronaut, Christer Fuglesang, said accessing data from space has the potential to improve a country’s knowledge in many areas.

Professor Fuglesang, the first Swedish national to go to space under the European Space Agency, encouraged Zambians to study space science as it is a beneficial subject to mankind.

Meanwhile, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the Swedish Embassy in Zambia, Paula Engwall, pledged the country’s support to Zambia in its efforts to have a thriving space program, noting the Ground Receiving Station as a major milestone in Zambia’s development agenda.

COURTING TONY BLAIR WILL NOT RESCUE THE TROUBLED UPND- Faston Mwale

COURTING TONY BLAIR WILL NOT RESCUE THE TROUBLED UPND

By Faston Mwale, SP Deputy General Secretary – Political

The disclosure by President Hakainde Hichilema that he has been courting former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair on how best to govern Zambia is a spine-chilling expose that speaks to the crippling leadership crisis that has bedeviled the country since the reign of the UPND three years ago. It is a clear affirmation that Hakainde Hichilema remains profoundly ill-informed politically and does not seem to have grasped Blair’s unforgettable leadership legacy.

Tony Blair does not offer a progressive model of leadership. There were serious gaps in his leadership style. Broadly speaking, his leadership was an intriguing experience of astonishing contradictions. Blair has earned a place in history for supporting the invasion of Iraq in 2003 on an inaccurate belief that Saddam Hussein’s regime possessed weapons of mass destruction a feat that attracted world-wide public opposition. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis perished in the Iraq war instigated by Blair’s lies.

It is becoming increasingly clear that President Hakainde is losing grip and is desperately clutching at the last straw. He has failed to provide leadership. His governance is marred with a series of crippling crises. At the height of debilitating hunger across households, the choir of praise singers has conspicuously disappeared from the political scene. Most certainly, Mr. Blair is unlikely to be a means of political survival for Mr. Hakainde. His eternal exit from the political arena is on the cards. Intuitively, Zambians have already started priming Dr. Fred M’membe for the 8th Republican Presidency. Fred M’membe who has consistently stood on the side of the struggling mass of the population is rapidly becoming a decisive factor in the unfolding political mix.

Scores of UPND members are leaving the party and are aligning themselves with the Socialist Party. Figuratively, the UPND is a bus that is going in a wrong direction, it would be foolish to take a ride on it. Those already on it are disembarking. It is unacceptable that a country that is potentially rich, blessed and fertile could be enduring very high rates of poverty. 60 percent of Zambians are living below the poverty line while approximately half of the population has been consigned to the worst form of subsistence. Poverty statistics will sharply rise following the increase in electricity tariffs.

KAVINDELE VS KAVINDELE: Father says his son is only interested in selling property

Former Vice-President Enoch Kavindele has accused his son, Enoch Jr. of manipulatimg his grandmother into transferring power of attorney for her properties to him, so that he could sell them.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/r84iJtfKMsaGf22c/

Senior and Junior Kavindele are in court squaring it off over who should keep documents related to three valuable properties in Lusaka owned by the former vice-president’s mother, Maria Senda Mampata.

Enoch senior says he has every right not to surrender the certificates of title to his son who is a photographer because the Power of Attorney he claims to have obtained from his grandmother was done without her consent as a donor.

Enock Jr has sued his father in the Lusaka High Court for withholding property documents.

He is seeking an Order compelling his father to hand over possession of Certificate of Title No. L7179 relating to Lot No. 7273/M, Lusaka, Certificate of Title No. 6167 relating to Lot No. 7290/M, Lusaka and the Certificate of Title relating Lot No. 7291/M, Lusaka.

The muscular photographer is also is seeking an order restraining Enoch Sr from interfering with the lawful possession and making any entries through the Registrar of Lands and Deeds on Lot No. 7273/M, Lusaka, Lot No. 7290/M, Lusaka and Lot No. 7291/M,

He wants damages for inconvenience occasioned to him by his father Enock Sr, and interest on all sums found to be due.

But in his defense Kavindele says, he is actually the one who bought properties known as Lot No. 7273/M, Lot No. 7290/M and Lot No. 7291 for his mother, 29 years ago.

He explained that his mother Maria Senda did not freely execute any Power of Attorney in favour of his son, and he will put his baby boy to strict proof at trial.

“The plaintiff made the said Maria Senda Mampata to affix her thumb print on the alleged Power of Attorney knowing very well that she did not understand the nature of the document,” Enoch Sr said.

The defendant said his mother is not well schooled to draft a power of attorney and that the 90-year old has complications with her eyesight and is incapable of reading.

Enoch Sr said his mother expressed ignorance about the power of attorney when he confronted her, as she could not remember authorizing his son to deal with any of the properties registered in her name.

The former vice president charged that the registration of the alleged Power of Attorney with the High Court has no effect as the same was improperly obtained.

He said he has been in possession of the certificates of title to the properties since their acquisition, as he is the one who bought the properties for his mother and he has been administering the properties which his son intends to sell for his own benefit, to the detriment of his mother.

“Enock Jr has so far gone ahead and prepared a draft Contract of Sale intending to sell portion of L/7273/M in the extent of three acres to one Yanjie Yan and Yu Lin for the sum of K3,750,000,” Enoch Sr said.

“It is not in the best interest of Maria Senda Mampata, a 90-year-old woman to sell the properties on which her own mother has been buried and where she has indicated that she wishes to be buried.”

He said his mother has been making about K30,000 per month from farming activities on the same properties and is not interested in the proceeds of sale of her properties.

“The properties in issue also accommodate so many relatives who live with Maria Senda Mampata and who are fully dependent on the farm for survival. Therefore, the intended sale of the properties by the plaintiff shall deprive all these persons of their means of survival,” Enoch Sr said.

He said that his mother has also gifted a portion of the properties to her church; New Apostolic Church – Senda Congregation and the transfer of the said portion of land is yet to be registered with the Lands and Deeds Registry therefore, the intended sale of the property shall inconvenience the members of the church including the registered title holder who still attends the same church and holds her faith very dear to her heart.

He further disclosed that his son obtained a power of attorney in a similar manner and collected rentals from tenants without remitting the same to his grandmother.

Enoch Sr said his son is not entitled to any relief and is now counter claiming a declaration that the Power of Attorney of August 13, 2024, is null and void for lack of authority from the donor.

He wants an order canceling the registration of the Power of Attorney on properties known as Lot No. 7273/M, Lot No. 7290/M and Lot No. 7291/M with the Lands and Deeds Registry.

The former vice-president is also seeking an order restraining his son from dealing with properties known as Lot No. 7273/M, Lot No. 7290/M and Lot No. 7291/M in any way whatsoever.

Slow delivery of development was eating me up – Hichilema

Slow delivery of development was eating me up – Hichilema

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has shared that one of the things that was eating him up when he assumed public office was the slow pace at which the public sector could deliver development to the public.

Speaking at the launch of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) Forum in Lusaka yesterday, President Hichilema stated that being slow in delivering development to the country had been a challenge for some time.

He shared that it is for this reason that the PDU was formed so as to eradicate the slow pace of delivering to the people of Zambia.

The Head of State narrated that the PDU is an institution aimed at tackling key issues such as energy and high cost of living.

“This forum was formed in 2023 to address the issues around delivery. To address the inadequacies that are inherent in government systems, to deliver for the people. One of the great things that was standing in my way having been elected into office and was beginning to eat me up was the slowness of delivery by the public sector to the people.”

“Central government and local government. All I know was that both were not delivering to the people at the speed that was needed in order to resolve the challenges that we inherited when we took office. This was a topical conversation in cabinet meetings. I thought through and checked, even in how the first world are slow where patients wait for 15 months to see a doctor. There’s something in the public sector that takes away the appetite, the motivation to deliver for the people that put us into public office,” he said.

The President reiterated that it is the public sector’s obligation is to serve all Zambians effectively.

“We work for all the people of Zambia. We are obligated to serve all Zambians, to effectively deliver to the people. Today I speak here to draw the purpose of the PDU. No different from the parastatal ZESCO to deliver for the people. The president is only one and he needs people to work with. I cannot deliver alone, this why we have the PDU to help the President deliver to the people,” noted President Hichilema.

Old but ‘youthful’ landlord satisfies tenants wife while hubby is away

Old but ‘youthful’ landlord satisfies tenants wife while hubby is away

A WATCHFUL 12-year-old girl in Lusaka has brought down a 77-year-old man, after she exposed him to her father, that he was sleeping with her mother, each time he was away.

The details of the unexpected adultery lay naked in the Matero Local Court where 77 year old retiree, Kaluba Friday of Lusaka’s Matero sued his former tenant, Luckson Mwanza aged 44 for defamation.

Mwanza an excavator operator residing in Chipata district of Eastern Province was sued for defamation of character on grounds that he accused the plaintiff of sleeping with his wife.

Kaluba told the court that Mwanza had been his tenant since 2018 until last month when he decided to shift from his house in Zingalume, but that they had complications regarding payments of last month’s rentals.

The plaintiff said when he called Mwanza asking for his rentals, the defendant refused saying he couldn’t pay him because he discovered that the old landlord overstepped his boundaries and started cultivating in his wife’s garden of pleasure – an accusation Kaluba said was force and he decided to sue him.

But when the court asked Mwanza if it was true he defamed an elder, he refused and insisted that his statement was true as he was sure that the old man was enjoying his last days on top of his wife.

His job required him to be in Chipata, so his wife would only remain home with his 12-year-old daughter (her step child) but that he would send money for rentals to her for every month, and she would pay to Kaluba.

He shared that last month, he was informed by a caring neighbour that his wife was bringing in a man in their matrimonial home while he was away for work in Chapata district.

The neighbour told Mwanza to come to Lusaka like a thief in the night, around 04, so that he could catch his wife red handed and indeed, it happened.

Following the aldultery of his wife, Mwanza emulated Chef 187 and decided to withdraw from the marriage and decided to shift from Kaluba’s house, while he took his daughter to Mazabuka to live with her Aunt.

But it was during that trip that the child told him that actually, it was not only the young man he found servicing his wife, she revealed that that the landlord too would come several times at night, and leave very early before anyone wakes up, a story his wife who is currently in Kabwe also confessed to on phone.

Mwanza now caught the revelation, he was paying Kaluba for two things, the house, and to assist him in servicing his wife unknowingly.

The daughter, who was also present in court as a witness from Mazabuka gave her testimony to the court in the chambers and reiterated that indeed Kaluba who she referred to as Bashikulu (grandpa) would come to their house on several occasions.

“Mum would tell me to leave the bedroom and sleep in the seating room each time bashikulu came and they would close the door in the bedroom. My mother would tell me that he will kill me If I tell dad,” the child testified.

But Kaluba, who suddenly inherited the spirit of the biblical Moses, denied the child’s allegations while stammering.

He said she was given what to say by her father adding that despite being widowed, he had his own woman (a girlfriend).

And in their submissions, Mwanza said he holds no grudges against Kaluba as it is good that he found out about what he was doing, while the plaintiff said the defendant should bring his former wife as witness instead of the child.

After the court spoke to the child in private, it already concluded this matter.

“This girl is too young to cook up such a story because it has no benefit both to her or the father, as she repeated the same story over and over again with the same details which showed that she was not told or had mastered it.”

“The court has however established that the plaintiff and the defendant’s wife created a relationship during the time that the defendant would give his wife rental money to pay directly to him. And it has been proven that his wife is unfaithful because he even caught her cheating red handed in their matrimonial bed,” said Magistrate Lewis Mumba.

The court then dismissed Kaluba’s claim due to lack of merit as he failed to substantiate his claim, and advised him to desist from taking advantage of his position as landlord to sleep with his tenant’s wives.

VICE PRESIDENT MUTALE W.K. NALUMANGO VISITS COLLAPSED LUILI GOLD MINE IN NANGOMA

October 9,2024

NANGOMA – The Vice President of Zambia, Mutale W.K. Nalumango, has visited Nangoma in the aftermath of the tragic collapse at the Luili Gold Mine, where 10 small-scale miners lost their lives.

During her visit, the Vice President extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of the government’s support during this difficult time.

Speaking to the affected families, Vice President Nalumango offered solace and comfort, acknowledging the deep pain and suffering they are going through.

She emphasized that the government stands in solidarity with them and will continue to provide necessary assistance. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this tragic period. We will do everything in our power to ensure that you are supported,” she said.

The Vice President highlighted the government’s commitment to improving safety conditions in the mining sector.

She stressed that ensuring miners work in accident-free environments is a top priority. “We are committed to ensuring that such accidents do not happen again, and we will work to create safe and secure conditions for all miners,” Nalumango said.

She further urged miners to adhere strictly to safety protocols before undertaking any mining activity.

“It is important that all small-scale miners observe safety guidelines to prevent accidents. No one should have to die because of avoidable risks,” she added.

Vice President Nalumango acknowledged the challenges faced by many Zambians who depend on mining for their livelihoods but warned that safety should never be compromised.

“We understand that many people work in the mines to make ends meet, but it is crucial to avoid dangerous working conditions that could lead to loss of life,” she said.

Additionally, the Vice President reiterated the government’s efforts to legalize small-scale mining.

She explained that formalizing these operations would not only improve safety standards but also help miners benefit more from their work.

“We are working tirelessly to legalize small-scale mining so that it becomes safer and more profitable for our people,” she noted.

The tragic collapse at Luili Gold Mine has sparked a renewed conversation on safety regulations in Zambia’s mining sector, and the Vice President’s visit underlines the government’s commitment to addressing these challenges head-on.

Tennis legend Nadal to retire after Davis Cup Finals

0

Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion, will retire from tennis at the end of this season.

The 38-year-old will represent Spain in his final appearance at next month’s Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.

Nadal has barely played over the past two seasons because of injuries and suggested last year he could retire at the end of the 2024 season.

In a video message released on Thursday, Nadal said: “I am here to let you know I am retiring from professional tennis.

“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, the last two especially.

“I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations.”

Nadal retires as the second-most successful men’s singles player of all time, behind only long-time rival Novak Djokovic.

Dubbed the ‘King of Clay’, Nadal won the French Open singles title a record 14 times, winning 112 of his 116 major matches at Roland Garros.

Nadal is also a four-time US Open champion and won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice.

He also won Olympic singles and doubles gold and helped Spain to five Davis Cup titles, most recently in 2019.

Alongside enduring rivals Djokovic and 20-time major champion Roger Federer, Nadal formed the ‘Big Three’ that dominated the men’s game from the early 2000s and drew in legions of fans.

Why Nadal has decided now is the right time?

When announcing he would not play in the 2023 French Open, Nadal said he planned to retire at the end of 2024 because of the series of injuries which were taking their toll on his body.

But, having returned earlier this season, Nadal became increasingly non-committal about his future.

The former world number one regularly said he wanted to keep playing as long as his body let him.

Now, after a chastening defeat by long-time rival Djokovic at the Paris Olympics in July, he has decided the time is right.

“It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make.

“But, in this life, everything has a beginning and an end.”

After returning to competitive action in Brisbane in January, Nadal was sidelined again with a thigh injury, missing the Australian Open.

Nadal played four tournaments during the European clay-court season, culminating in a first-round defeat at the French Open.

Since then he has played just two more tournaments – in Bastad and the Olympic Games at Roland Garros.

Last month he was included in Spain’s squad for the Davis Cup Finals, which takes place between 19-24 November.

“I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could ever have imagined,” Nadal said.

“I’m very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country.”

From Mallorca kid to the King of Clay

Nadal was aged three when he was introduced to tennis by his uncle Toni, who encouraged him to transition to playing left-handed after seeing how strongly he could hit the ball.

He turned professional aged 15 and three years later helped Spain win the 2004 Davis Cup as they beat the United States, with Nadal defeating world number two Andy Roddick.

The following year, he began his dominance of the French Open, beating Argentina’s Mariano Puerta in the final.

Nadal’s five-set win over Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon final – an epic that finished 12 minutes short of five hours – is regarded as one of the best matches in history and one of the pinnacles of their 15-year rivalry.

In between those two finals, he won the 2009 Australian Open for the first time with another five-set victory over Federer, and completed the career Grand Slam at the 2010 US Open.

Although he won all four majors, Nadal will forever be synonymous with the French Open, where a metallic statue of him hitting his trademark forehand was built in 2021.

From 2005 to 2014, he won nine of 10 Roland Garros titles and then five of six between 2017 and 2022.

In 14 final appearances, he was never taken to five sets, beating Federer in four finals and Djokovic three times.

Of his four French Open losses, Djokovic defeated him twice with Alexander Zverev this year and Robin Soderling in 2009 the other two men to topple him.

Fittingly, his final major title came at the French Open in 2022, two days after his 36th birthday.

The 91-year-old African president who keeps defying obituary-writers

0

Speculation over the wellbeing and whereabouts of Cameroon’s 91-year-old President Paul Biya has become a hot topic across Africa this week.

After attending the China-Africa summit in Beijing in early September, it was perhaps no surprise that he gave the UN General Assembly in New York a miss.

But when he stayed away from this week’s summit of French-speaking countries (La Francophonie) at Viller Cotterêts, north of Paris, the rumour mill went into overdrive, as he had not been seen in public for about a month.

Cameroon’s ambassador in France insisted that Biya was “in good health” and in Geneva – his habitual base when away from home.

Other sources suggested this was because he needed to rest under medical supervision after a heavy diplomatic schedule in July and August.

After all, he is Africa’s oldest head of state and the second longest-serving, narrowly beaten to that record by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of neighbouring Equatorial Guinea.

Such mundane indications were not enough to still speculative guesswork about Biya in Africa-interested media and political circles.

So finally the government spokesman, René Sadi, issued a formal denial of the rumours, adding that the president would return home “in the next few days”.

And the head of the president’s private office, with him in Geneva, also said he was “in excellent health”.

Cameroon occupies a key strategic location, as the gateway to landlocked Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Apart from struggling to fully suppress jihadist violence around Lake Chad, it also wrestles with a complex and often violent crisis in its English-speaking regions.

In leading the response to these challenges, Biya has brought an unusual personal style that often eschews the front of the stage, without any apparent personal need to engage in diplomatic presenteeism or performative summitry.

He is a habitual non-attendee at many gatherings of African leaders.

Even back home, with his measured speech and cautious tone, Biya has for many years spaced his personal interventions, largely delegating the day-to-day running of the government, and handling of technical dossiers, to a succession of prime ministers.

Unexplained absences from public view have been nothing out of the ordinary for this most enigmatic of presidents.

Rumours that he has died do surface from time to time, largely because of these unannounced disappearances from the scene.

But this low-key style belies the determination with which he contrived his arrival in power in 1982, elbowing aside his patron and predecessor Ahmadou Ahidjo, promising liberalising change before entrenching a hold on the presidency that no subsequent challenger or campaign of protest has managed to shift.

As a wave of multi-party democratising change swept across much of Africa at the beginning of the 1990s, Biya was one of several incumbent leaders to shrewdly adapt, allowing sufficient reform to take the heat out of mass protest while nevertheless firmly keeping control.

Since one narrow election victory back in 1992, he has shrugged off subsequent political challenges, helped perhaps by manipulation of the polls and certainly by the divisions among often tactically inept opponents.

Now, with Biya’s current seven-year term drawing to an end in November 2025, supporters have even been pressing the 91-year-old to stand again.

Critics feel that it is long past time for Cameroon’s national leadership to pass to a younger generation who could tackle national problems and explore opportunities for development and progress with more speed and dynamism.

In 2016 teachers and lawyers in the two mainly English-speaking regions, South-West and North-West, protested over the failure to properly resource English language rights and public services.

If Biya had responded more rapidly and with a more assertively generous and loudly touted reform package, perhaps he could have assuaged discontent early on – and thus averted the eventual slide into violent confrontation between the security forces and armed militants demanding outright secession.

Biya did later bring forward reforms – to meet the grievances of the English-speaking regions and, nationwide, to decentralise power to regional councils.

But sometimes citizens have faced long waits before the regime addresses their concerns – decentralised structures were not set up until many years after the original framework legislation had been passed.

Some Cameroonians are, however, comfortable with Biya’s restrained approach to leadership and his readiness to leave successive prime ministers to handle routine decisions.

They see his role as more symbolic and distant, akin almost to a constitutional monarch.

Certainly, this representational role is a dimension of the presidency with which he has seemed at ease.

On 15 August, for example, he was at Boulouris, on the Côte d’Azur in France, where he gave a detailed 12-minute address at the commemoration of the 1944 Allied landings to liberate southern France from the Nazis – an operation in which many troops from the French African territories took part.

And in fact, despite frequent absences from the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé – usually retreating either to his home village in the forested south or to his preferred international base, Geneva’s Intercontinental Hotel – Biya has continued to take the key sensitive political and strategic decisions.

The main gatekeeper to the heart of power at the Étoudi presidential palace is the Secretary General of the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh.

A power system where Biya, as the head of state, keeps his cards so close to his chest inevitably generates gossip about his own intentions for the 2025 election and about potential successors.

But some of the senior regime figures most frequently tipped, such as Laurent Esso and René Sadi, are by now themselves far from youthful.

Support groups have also appeared to promote a passing of the torch to the president’s elder son Franck Biya, a businessman – although Franck himself has never shown any interest in politics or given any hint of such ambitions.

But in today’s Africa, where disenchantment with the political establishment runs deep, particularly among young urban populations, establishment attempts to secure the continuation of power can carry risks.

In neighbouring Gabon, President Ali Bongo was deposed by the army last year after the regime manipulated the 2023 election to deliver him a further seven-year term despite his fragile state of health.

And when Senegal’s President Macky Sall lined up his Prime Minister Amadou Ba as his successor, he was decisively rebuffed by the voters who opted instead for the young reformist opponent Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Biya and his inner circle may feel confident of avoiding such scenarios. But that will require a shrewd reading of popular sentiment, especially among youth and the middle-class in big cities such as Yaoundé and Douala.

ERB approves ZESCO’s emergency tariff increase for three months effective 1st November, 2024

APPROVED EMERGENCY TARIFFS TO BE EFFECTIVE FOR 3 MONTHS – ERB

By ZR Reporter

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has directed that the approved emergency tariffs should be effective for three months from 1st November 2024 το 31 January 2025, after which the Board will re-evaluate the Emergency situation and grant a renewal, if necessary.

The Board has also directed that ZESCO should explore sourcing extra revenue from other sources and other financially prudent options for power imports.

It has also directed ZESCO to prioritize local power purchases provided it is cost effective when compared with Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) and other sources.

ERB has also directed ZESCO to adhere to the published load management schedule as communicated to the consumers and ensure a maximum of 17 hours of load shedding.

It has demanded demanded in the event that the Utility experiences challenges in adhering to the load shedding schedules, the ERB and the public must be notified immediately using real time methods.

The Board has told the power Utility company to heighten sensitisation of the public on the emergency power situation and emergency tariff and provide information on energy efficiency measures and provide weekly updates to the ERB, providing evidence that revenue raised from the emergency tariffs is spent solely on the purchase of emergency power.

ZESCO has also been directed to report on actual exports and energy imports from Eskom, EDM, ZPC and any other sources, as the case may be, and any technical challenges including transmission bottlenecks, as they arise.

The ERB has also directed
ZESCO to ensure that it adheres to the Board’s key performance indicators.

ZESCO is expected to within 30 days submit a report showing the implementation of short term, medium term and long term measures to enhance efficiency.

This came to light today after ERB Chairperson James Banda announced the approval of ZESCO’s application for emergency tariffs during the emergency period.

Mr Banda said the approval is aimed at ensuring that there is tariff affordability.

He explained that in the application, ZESCO proposed to reduce the tariffs for residential R1, R2 and commercial Cl customers.

“This will provide relief for low- Income households and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs.) In addition, these proposed reductions will also ensure that tariffs are affordable to this category of consumers. This measure will also assist in alleviating any huge financial impact that would arise from the increased tariffs,” he said.

“Similarly, the proposed adjustments on the MDs are necessary to enable ZESCO import sufficient power for the industries to ensure that these productive sectors remain sustainable during the Emergency period. The proposal by ZESCO to eliminate capacity charge and to adopt an all-energy tariff for the MD customers will also provide the necessary relief to this segment of consumers.”

Mr Banda said the impact on Load Shedding is the other reason for the approval.

“It was noted that the power deficit has increased from 900MW το 1,300MW, increasing the hours of load shedding from 17 hours to 21 hours,” he said.

“This has meant that the already struggling businesses experienced a reduction in their revenues due to the increased power rationing which subsequently affected their productivity. In this application, ZESCO committed to reducing hours of Load shedding and publishing predictable load shedding schedules. This reduction will provide relief to households and businesses. Additionally, it was submitted by businesses during the public hearings that the cost of running diesel generators is way above the proposed tariff adjustment.”

ZESCO’s financial performance and its viability is also among the reasons for the approval.

He said the financial review indicated that the utility does not have adequate resources to finance the additional power Imports.

“Therefore, there is need to support the Utility to raise the required funds to meet its funding gap for urgent Importation of additional power aimed at alleviating the loadshedding situation,” he said.

THE UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT OF DR. ( honourary)E. C. LUNGU ( FORMER PRESIDENT) : A MATTER WHICH MUST CONCERN ALL ZAMBIANS.

THE UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT OF DR. ( honourary)E. C. LUNGU ( FORMER PRESIDENT) : A MATTER WHICH MUST CONCERN ALL ZAMBIANS.

The former head of state has an active matter in the Constitutional Court of Zambia an additional layer of our judiciary born during his tenure of office.
If what goes awash on social media and especially if not contested is anything to go by,then the man has been a great beneficiary of the same institution he wants to desperage today.

We were there when the the first Presidential Elections petition inordinately collapsed in the same court and Dr.Hakainde Hichilema and team got dribbled on a skilfully crafted technically of ‘ an appeal out of time ‘ implying then that the case had gone beyond the fourteen days window .

I shudder when I think of this evil because never in my life time have I seen or heard of a court in this country operating over the weekend. But the extra-ordinary events then which made Dr.E.C.Lungu benefit from the scheme seemed to suggest such . This is a matter now assumed closed by our judiciary yet not in our minds. We wondered then and shall be left to wonder eternally!

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? WHO WON THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL POLLS ?
The uproffessional conduct of Dr. E.C.Lungu and his Judiciary left the whole Country in a quandary!

Alot has been written to explain what could have occassioned such but the substantive matter now is the continued disrespect of Dr. E.C.Lungu over the judiciary as evidenced by his continued attacks on the three judges he has raised issues against.

Professor Muna Ndulo in one of his submissions has done a death blow to this matter piecing together the jig-saw why the now embattled suspended  trio acted in that fashion inimical to the dictates of their profession. This version  has not been  challenged making many of us believe it.
Dr.E.C.Lungu postured in one of the interviews with a VOA journalist that he was an accomplished lawyer during his time of practice and the benefits realised there from are the ones which enabled him continue gifting his family members with properties they are failing to acquit  themselves on.

Drawing from this narrative , one would assume that the learned Counsel would have respect for our Jurisprudence and at no time would he be as contemptuous as he seemingly is. In my reading , I have come across the  term sub judice implying that matters active before the courts  must not be  brought into social discourses to provoke the readership to comment there upon but be left to the Honourable Judges or Justices as their preserve  to decide upon .

With this in mind why should Dr.E.C.Lungu continue ridiculing the trio of the Judges who he is not comfortable with ? Aren’t his actions contemptuous? Is he doing this because he has immunity against prosecution ? If such be the basis of his presumably unprofesisional conduct, what is there in our laws to protect the now  vulnerable Judges from the scathing attacks of a litigant who has desired to act with impunity ?

May former president Lungu ‘s handlers help him know that he is a citizen just like any of us except he stumbled upon the Presidency of this great nation thus earning him the privileges he is now failing to manage appropriately.

GBM goes to jail smiling as sister begs Hichilema for pardon

THE Lusaka magistrates court was a scene of emotions yesterday as family members of former defense minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba were in tears appealing to President Hakainde Hichilema to release him saying he was a breadwinner.

Mwamba alias GBM was jailed five years by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court on eight counts of conflict of interest, four counts of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, and fined home K50,000 for money laundering.

However, Mwamba’s impassioned sister Ruth who could not accept her brother’s punishment for the crimes he committed cried to the President to consider canceling his criminal record, and set him at liberty due to his chronic illness.

“We are appealing as a family to the President Mr Hakainde Hichilema please consider your friend he’s got a heart problem,” she said.

Ruth called to the Head of State to put in memory, of her brother’s sacrifice for the UPND prior to the 2016 election.

“Think of how he helped you in Northern province. He spent his money as well to revamp UPND, hear us, please help him to come out, he is the breadwinner he looks after so many people in the family and from his chiefdom,” she said.

“There are more than 1000 orphans that he looks after. Consider him ,he helped you in Northern province, Mr President please we are appealing as a family to you.”

Ruth claimed that her brother made the UPND popular in Northern province hence for that, the President should look on with favor on her brother, as he is the only one who has the powers to cancel someone’s prison sentence.

“It’s so painful, think of when he was vice President for UPND. He really helped you in so many ways even in Northern province. In Northern province there was no UPND but he helped you. He used his strength and money just on that Mr President please help him for that. Release him you are the boss of the judiciary,”said Ruth.

Mwamba was facing 24 criminal charges among them; eight counts of conflict of interest, one count of money laundering and 15 counts of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

In his judgment magistrate Stanford Ngobola said Mwamba, going by his position in the ministry as minister of defence, was not supposed to allow his companies nor relatives to engage in business with the ministry he superintended over.

“Any business conducted by him through his daughter, family business would amount to conflict of interest. With or without declaration of conflict of interest a public officer’s relative or company is not allowed to do business with the public body where the public officer works,” he said.

He said Mwamba was a sole signatory of Arizona marketing and distributors accounts hence the company should not have obtained contracts from his ministry.

Magistrate Ngobola found that Mwamba’s daughter Thandiwe secured eight contracts for the company she managed on behalf of her father, therefore there was no doubt that GBM was involved in the process for the awarding of contracts to Curzon Global.

The court said his explanation that he wrote to the permanent secretary declaring interest in the awarding of contracts to his company was an afterthought.

Magistrate Ngobola said the issue of the letter only arose during defense and there were no records at cabinet office to prove that he declared interest.

The court found Mwamba guilty on eight counts of conflict of interest and convicted him.

On the charge of money laundering, magistrate Ngobola said the US$620,000 paid to Mwamba’s company by the ministry of defense amounts to illegal gains, as the contracts were illegally obtained by his daughter.

“I find that the $620, 000 is tainted in view of the illegality of the source and therefore it is proceeds of crime in regards to Section….of the Public Procurement Act,”

He said Arizona received a suspicious transaction amounting to US$399, 985 from Curzon Global on the pretext that it was proceeds from maize.

Magistrate Ngobola said there is no evidence that the money was a subject for the sell of maize, therefore Mwamba had not discharged the evidential burden shifted on him.

He also found him guilty of possessing US$499,985.00 through Germins Motorways Limited Bank Account and possessing US$20, 000, 000 in his bank accounts

Magistrate Ngobola said Curzon Global Zambia had no authority to enter in the consultancy agreement with GBM on behalf of Curzon Global Honkong since it was not registered at PACRA.

The court acquitted him on 11 counts of possessing wealth suspected to be tainted as it was not proved to the required standard.

In mitigation Mwamba’s lawyer Kelvin Fube Bwalya said his client was a married man with 13 grandchildren.

He said GBM has been a law abiding citizen citizen with no criminal record and he has run businesses in this country and  his bank accounts and business deals have never been flagged by banks, business associates and the FIC (Financial Intelligence Centre).

“He became a public figure when he joined politics, he has never been a politician he has always been a businessman. The conviction is a psychological blow to his good standing business acumen and his relationship with society at large,” he said.

“The conviction will affect the manner he lives in society and business community. Your conviction of this once upon a time honorable man has damage beyond the walls of this court.
Consider the shame and embarrassment that the convict will face,” he said.

Charles Changano submitted that Mwamba needs to be confined to a better place than prison.

He asked the court to use the jurisprudence from the Holy Bible when Adam and Eve had sinned against God.

“Before punishment, God had to ask, what have you done that? The mitigation was clear, each one was pointing a finger, but God had the discretion for the wrong by sending Jesus Christ to give leniency to the sinners,”he said.

Changano submitted that Mwamba is the one who brings home the bacon hence, his jailing will affect many.

“You are the eyes of God, you have the power to punish or not to punish. The court is fully packed. These are the family members that depend on your convict. Consider the family in court apart from the journalists which if put in prison they will suffer,”said Changano.

“Though I am standing, I kneel down, our client is at your discretion to enjoy the powers of sentencing from you.”

Bonaventure Mutale  proposed that the court considers a suspended sentence as jailing Mwamba would be condemning him to death.

“He has an acute heart problem which required him to seek medical attention outside the country,” he said.

“A custodial sentence will clearly have devastating consequences on the health status of the convict. Our prison facilities are congested. Certainly, a custodial sentence will almost be akin to a death sentence in the circumstances.”

In handing down his sentence magistrate Ngobola said Mwamba as a public servant, owed his fiduciary duties to the public.

He said ministers need to be professional when entrusted to serve the public by proving that they are not susceptible to temptations of having sticky fingers.

“Ministers are expected to be honest in serving the public. Member of the public expect ministers to have a high standard of honesty, professionalism and transparency,” magistrate Ngobola said.

He sentenced him to five years in each of the eight counts of conflict of interest, fined him K50,000 for money laundering and jailed him three years in each of the four counts of possessing tainted wealth.

Magistrate Ngobola directed that the sentences would run concurrently effective October 9, 2024.

Mwamba’s sisters wailed immediately the court pronounced his five year sentence forcing the magistrate to direct police officers to eject them from of the courtroom.

When the matter was stood for 15 minutes before mitigation Mwamba hugged his children, cousins and elderly women and men of the family goodbye.

One of his relatives was heard saying;”let’s get our last pictures with him before he is taken away.”

Although the Court had pronounced that he was going to jail Mwamba was seemingly not broken as he was lively and cheerful as he craved to be snapped and filmed by journalists.

“Nkopeni baiche, munkopeshe sana (capture me you chaps, make sure you get enough pictures and videos of me),” said Mwamba whilst smiling.
