TEACHER UNION CALLS FOR THE PROVISION OF DECENT ACCOMMODATION FOR NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHERS
CHIPATA – 16/07/22
THE Zambia National Union of Teachers(ZNUT) has congratulated the Government for publishing the long awaited 30,496 names of newly recruited teachers.
ZNUT Director of Public relations and international affairs,Godwin Maseka says this will greatly help in bringing about quality delivery of education to our learners in the country, adding that equity and equality are key element in providing the desired provision of quality education.
“As ZNUT, the variance in Teacher pupil ratio was indeed a serious concern to us and when we see the fulfilment of the publication of names of newly recruited teachers, it pleases us and the Nation at large,”he says.
Mr Maseka told FALCON staffer in Chipata that it is incumbent upon the newly appointed teachers to take up the mental and prove to the nation that they mean well, saying teaching is a calling and those who have been given the chance must apply themselves to standards expected.
“We’re aware as ZNUT that housing units may be a challenge but we’re hopeful that the Government, cooperating partners and the labour movements shall embark on a serious drive of engagement so that decent accommodation is built as a matter of urgency.Motivation is key and quality affordable accommodation was one out of many that may constitute motivation”
“Rome was never built in a day and as such, we’re more that hopeful as a union that this opportunity has presented itself with an opportunity to think outside the box so that this challenge can be resolved,”he says.
He called upon all local councils to invest in the education sector through the proper utilisation of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
“You and me are aware of the introduction of free education and as such, there is exponential increase of pupil population. This therefore, calls for increased furniture for our learners in our schools,”Mr Maseka says.
He says this was yet another area which requires urgent attention so that quality desks are procured for our learners.
“All education stakeholders should work together to bring about this transformation. Our appeal to our recruited members is that, they must remember that the career they’ve joined requires a lot of serious commitment and that it’s a life long undertaking,”he added.
