Ukraine releases details of deep-strike operation targeting Russia’s petrochemical hub

Ukraine has released additional details about its long-range drone operation carried out in the early hours of 8 July 2026, targeting the major petrochemical complex in Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, approximately 1,100–1,200 km from the Ukrainian border.

According to Ukraine, the operation was conducted by the Special Operations Forces (SOF) using long-range kamikaze drones that penetrated Russian air defenses and struck one of Russia’s most important energy and industrial hubs.

The reported targets included:

TANECO Oil Refinery (Tatneft) – one of Russia’s largest and most modern refineries, with an annual processing capacity of 16 million tonnes, producing gasoline, Euro-5 diesel and aviation fuel.

TAIF-NK Oil Refinery – local footage reportedly showed a drone striking the facility before a large explosion.

Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNH) – one of Eastern Europe’s largest petrochemical plants, where fires and damage were reported within the industrial zone.

Multiple fires and thick black smoke were reported across the industrial complex following the strikes.

Russian officials acknowledged that several industrial facilities were damaged and reported minor injuries. Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev warned residents that the large-scale drone attack was still ongoing and urged the public to remain cautious.

Authorities also temporarily suspended flight operations at Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, and Bugulma airports as a security precaution.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed it intercepted 415 Ukrainian drones nationwide during the overnight attack. However, strikes were still reported in several regions, including the Saratov Oil Refinery, where local reports said one person was killed, as well as the industrial facilities in Nizhnekamsk.
