ECZ HALTS LUKANGA WARD BY-ELECTION IN KABWE FOLLOWING COURT ORDER

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has suspended the Lukanga ward by-election in Kabwe after receiving a court order. ECZ Principal Electoral Officer Maata Sikota confirmed the halt, noting that while nominations remain valid, the election process has been paused pending the court’s ruling.

Mr. Sikota explained that the court order was served after the aspiring candidates had already filed their nominations. Speaking at a meeting convened to develop the campaign timetable, he emphasized that the commission would adhere to the court’s directive, and all activities related to the by-election are on hold.

“The election programme will depend on the outcome of the court ruling,” Mr. Sikota stated. He highlighted that the by-election was initially triggered by the conviction of Councilor Belemu Sibanze for a theft-related offense. However, the court’s intervention has put the process on hold, leaving the possibility open for the councilor’s reinstatement or for the by-election to proceed, depending on the final ruling.

Mr. Sikota assured that all stakeholders would be informed of the court’s decision once the matter is resolved. Four candidates had successfully filed their nominations for the Lukanga ward by-election before the suspension was enforced.
