“Alice nanvela njala…” says a two months baby.
An interesting and shocking incident has developed in Chongwe. The now famous village is called Chikonkoto. Reports are that a two-month-old infant is allegedly able to talk, causing fear among residents who are now demanding the banishment of the baby and her family.
Eyewitnesses, not ear witnesses say the infant, who cannot yet walk or sit up, calls out for her mother, Alice, when distressed, using phrases such as
“Alice bwela unitenge sunvela nilila’ (Alice, come and get me, can’t you hear that I’m crying?)” or
“Alicia, navela njala, nifuna kudya’ (Alicia, i’m hungry, I want to eat.)”
The infant’s great-grandmother, Loveness Musawa, believes the baby is demon-possessed, while headwoman Chikonkoto, village secretary Edmond Matambo, and other villagers have confirmed the strange occurrences, describing them as “jaw-dropping” and “bizarre.”
However, the situation has taken a darker turn, with residents pressuring headwoman Chikonkoto to banish the family from the village, fearing that the infant’s alleged ability to talk may bring evil spirits or misfortune to the community.
The headwoman is at a loss over how to handle the situation, acknowledging that the residents are adamant that the family must leave the village to prevent any further strange occurrences.
“Yes, we have a baby in my village that is able to talk at only two months. I have seen the baby and I heard it speak mentioning his mother’s name. It is truly a mystery, that is the reason we tried to engage men of God to help us resolve
this issue,” she said.
The headwoman said the mother of the baby is only 16 years old and is being kept by the grandmother.
She said the situation is regrettable but hoped a solution would be found before bowing to the pressure of burnishing the entire family.
Chikonkoto village secretary Edmond Matambo who says he has also seen and heard the infant talk said he was informed about the situation by the baby’s great grandmother, Loveness Musawa who said her great grandson who was only born on September 17, 2024 was able to talk.
“My granddaughter, Alice Musawa is the baby’s mother. She is 16. The man responsible denied the pregnancy. The baby was fine when it was born but after a month and some weeks, my husband and I while seating outside heard his talk while crying saying, Alicia bwela unitenge sunvela nilila?,” she said.
Thinking they heard wrong, they ignored. But since that incident, the baby has been talking each time he wants something, a situation that they have failed to keep as a secret.
“We tried going to traditional doctors but nothing has happened. We have now engaged pastors to come and deliver the baby from the demonic attacks,” she said.
Chongwe central ward councillor, Thomas Sakala said he received information about the talking baby from the village secretary and the headwoman.
Sakala also believes the problem is spiritual and that he is currently organising pastors from Chongwe and outside Chongwe to intervene in the matter and help deliver the baby.
“It took the headwoman and Chikonkoto village secretary to follow me in Chongwe CBD to inform me about the mystery. After confirming and verifying, I have decided to involve powerful men of God to go and pray for the family on Monday (today), he said.
Sakala said he has never heard or seen a baby aged two months talk but urged villagers in the area to remain calm and pray with the family instead of calling for the baby to be sent away from the village.
