ECZ READY FOR LUKANGA WARD BY-ELECTION SAYS ZALOUMIS

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is set to conduct a by-election in Lukanga Ward following the vacancy left by UPND councilor Belemu Sibanza, who was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment for theft.

ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, addressed stakeholders at a meeting in Kabwe, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful and orderly nomination process. The meeting aimed to brief stakeholders on the electoral process and expectations.

Zaloumis underscored the significance of political parties, media, civil society, and the police in ensuring a successful by-election. She emphasized the need for political parties to adhere to the Electoral Code of Conduct and for the media to sensitize the public on the electoral process.

The Chairperson also reminded political parties to ensure that adoption certificates are signed by authorized officials, such as the Secretary General or President, to avoid invalid nominations.

The nomination process is scheduled for August 21, 2024, with the campaign period commencing on August 22, 2024, after the formulation of the campaign timetable.

The ECZ has assured stakeholders of its readiness to conduct the by-election and appealed for cooperation from all parties involved to ensure a peaceful and successful electoral process.
