KAMBWILI DISMISSES KWACHA APPRECIATION AS FICTITIOUS

FORMER Information and Broadcasting Minister Chishimba Kambwili has described the recent appreciation of the Zambian Kwacha against the US Dollar as purely fictitious.

Speaking in an interview at his residence in Luanshya, Mr. Kambwili, who is also former Roan Member of Parliament, expressed shock that the UPND government claims the economy is performing well while the situation on the ground tells a different story.

He said the Kwacha can only gain real strength through increased productivity, noting that Zambia’s manufacturing sector has collapsed and the country is not exporting enough to bolster the currency.

Mr. Kambwili added that government claims of economic improvement are part of electioneering tactics ahead of the August 13 general elections.

He warned Zambians to be cautious, saying the UPND is attempting to manipulate figures to present a misleading picture of the economy.

Meanwhile, he refuted assertions that Zambian mines were closing every month before the UPND assumed power.

  1. It is fictitious because every currency in the world has gained against the US dollar since dollar has become weak due to trumps policies. However be mindful that it is not long term. Immediately the US put their house back in order we will be back to square one even reaching K25 to 1usd.

  2. This man doesn’t understand Economics despite being in government before. Things don’t happen in one day, they happen gradually. Even the food we eat takes time to move from the entry point to reach the exit point. Money markets are not controlled by politicians, not even the president, they compete with other convertible currencies. So the issue of being fictitious is out. Bally shall fix it, mwashininkisha nomba.

  3. Kambwili lacks a fundamental understanding of economics and the principles of wealth creation. He merely appears to be a misguided individual making unfounded claims. Zambia is no longer classified as a distressed economy; rather, it is in a phase of recovery and reform. The Kwacha is bolstered by increased investor confidence, Mr. Kambwili. With the stabilization of import costs, inflation is anticipated to decrease to single-digit levels, and over time, the rate of price increases is expected to decelerate. Had Kambwili possessed a grasp of economic principles, he would have recognized the proper sequence of operations: stabilizing the currency, reducing inflation, rebuilding reserves, and subsequently fostering growth. This is precisely what HH and his team have accomplished to bring us to our current position—demonstrating discipline in safeguarding public resources, enhancing production, and attracting investment. He is focused on building the economy through productivity, exports, and job creation, rather than relying on debt and misappropriating borrowed funds. The PF has diverted borrowed money into their own pockets, purchasing luxury items such as houses and helicopters.

  4. Chishimba Kambwili’s remarks reflect a worrying lack of understanding of political economy, economic growth policies, and how such policies are implemented in practice. The appreciation of the Zambian Kwacha is the result of multiple interrelated factors, including fiscal discipline, debt restructuring progress, improved investor confidence, and macroeconomic reforms not simplistic or isolated events.

Furthermore, economic growth does not automatically or immediately result in a sudden drop in commodity prices. Such outcomes occur gradually over time as market forces adjust. Expecting instant results only exposes a shallow grasp of how economies function.

Unfortunately, Chishimba Kambwili often speaks without reflection or evidence. His greatest weakness has consistently been his own rhetoric talking excessively without grounding his statements in facts or sound analysis. His style of politics is outdated, driven more by noise and populism than by evidence-based engagement. Zambia’s political discourse deserves depth, responsibility, and informed debate, not reckless commentary.

  5. Ignorance combined with hatred is very toxic, the same chap would have issued a different statement if the kwacha was hitting K30 to the dollar. This chap has no interest for the country. He’s become very irrelevant.
