🔴 MOSCOW–EUROPE TENSIONS ESCALATE: LAVROV SAYS “EUROPE IS WAGING A WAR AGAINST US”

Russia is intensifying its rhetoric and economic measures against European countries amid continued Western military support for Ukraine and sanctions against Moscow.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that if weapons supplied by European countries are used against Russia, Moscow considers Europe to be waging a war against it.

“If you accept that your weapons are being used against us and we shoot them down (…) I have no doubt that this is a war Europe is waging against us,” Lavrov said.

🔴 “LET THEM BE AFRAID”

Lavrov’s remarks come as Moscow increases economic pressure on European companies that continue operating in Russia.

In September, Russia placed the local assets of companies including Nestlé and Auchan under temporary administration. Russian operations belonging to German retail giant Metro AG were subsequently also placed under temporary control, according to the report.

Reuters reported that when a Russian official was asked whether the Russian subsidiaries of banks UniCredit and Raiffeisen Bank International could be next, the official responded: “Let them be afraid.”

The Kremlin has justified such measures against the backdrop of what Moscow describes as direct European involvement in the war in Ukraine, as well as Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

🔴 RUSSIA HAS NOT FORMALLY DECLARED WAR ON EUROPE

Despite the increasingly confrontational rhetoric, a distinction must be made between Russia accusing Europe of waging war against it and formally declaring war on European countries.

Lavrov’s statement does not constitute a formal declaration of war against Europe.

In remarks made days before Lavrov’s comments, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was not preparing military action against Europe and had no plans to attack European countries.

The two statements reflect the growing confrontation between Moscow and European capitals, although Lavrov’s remarks frame European military assistance to Ukraine as participation in a war against Russia.

🔴 ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL CONFRONTATION DEEPENS

Meanwhile, the European Union continues to enforce sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine. Brussels has maintained extensive restrictions targeting Russian individuals and entities while continuing efforts to limit Moscow’s economic and military capabilities.

The EU and Russia remain locked in a broader confrontation involving military assistance to Ukraine, economic sanctions, diplomatic tensions and growing restrictions on businesses operating across their respective markets.

For now, the developments point to an intensifying political, military and economic standoff between Moscow and European governments rather than a formal declaration of war by Russia against the entire continent.

How far could the confrontation escalate before Russia and Europe return to direct dialogue?
