Chiwenga warns Zanu-PF of ‘2017’

Tensions ran high at a Zanu-PF Central Committee meeting as top officials clashed over a controversial campaign pushing to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028. The campaign has exposed significant rifts within the ruling party, especially between Mnangagwa and his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga. Sources revealed that all ten Zanu-PF provincial branches back the proposal, which is expected to be endorsed at this weekend’s National People’s Conference in Bulawayo. However, the measure would still require ratification at the party’s congress in 2027 or through an extraordinary congress.

According to The Zimbabwe Independent, the division was palpable at the meeting on Wednesday in Harare, as members debated the ED2030 campaign, a slogan supporting Mnangagwa’s continued leadership. Although Mnangagwa himself did not directly address the campaign, he emphasized the need for “discipline and unity” within Zanu-PF. The president reminded members that the ED2030 slogan was not an official party slogan, and none of the officials chanted it during the session.

Zanu-PF’s national political commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, underscored concerns about factionalism within the party, echoing Chiwenga’s calls to avoid repeating the events that led to the 2017 military intervention that ousted Robert Mugabe. Chiwenga cautioned members to stay united, remarking that the party could not afford to return to the turbulent period of 2017.

Party Chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri issued a stern warning, promising to tackle factionalism across the provinces, starting with Harare. She stressed her determination to restore unity and warned that “heads will roll” if necessary. Central Committee members also raised concerns over an incident involving Harare provincial chairperson Goodwills Masimirembwa, whose business premises were petrol-bombed, reportedly in connection to internal party disputes.

Despite Mnangagwa’s reluctance to address the term extension push, many committee members openly expressed support for him to continue beyond 2028. “We support you, President,” one member said. “We will stand by you if you decide to stay until 2030.”

However, dissent erupted when Politburo member Andy Mhlanga was booed for supporting Mnangagwa’s statements about stepping down in 2028. The push to extend his term has drawn considerable backing, and if the resolution passes this weekend, it would indicate Mnangagwa’s intention to remain in office.

Social media has further fueled tensions within Zanu-PF, with leaked images of T-shirts allegedly printed in support of Chiwenga adding to speculation about a divide. Mnangagwa and Chiwenga are reportedly keen to avoid public embarrassment, with party officials wary of repeating scenes from the controversial war veterans’ league congress held earlier this month.

Senate President Mabel Chinomona distanced herself from a circulating photograph suggesting a vice-presidential bid, while the Central Committee moved to enforce the Cyber and Data Security Act to prosecute individuals spreading misinformation.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa addressed the media on Wednesday, dismissing reports of a rift as “social media hullabaloo.” He emphasized that Zanu-PF remains a structured and unified organization. “There are issues which people are raising… but Zanu-PF is a structured party with a very, very strong kinship which has known each other through thick and thin for the good part of the last 40 to 50 years,” Mutsvangwa stated.

As the party approaches the National People’s Conference, the internal dynamics within Zanu-PF remain tense, with officials on high alert to prevent any further public display of factional disputes.

Social Media Erupts After Bride Abandons Hubby and Elopes with Secret Lover on Wedding Night

Social media has been buzzing with hilarious reactions after it emerged that a newlywed bride from Bulawayo eloped with her secret lover on her wedding night.

The news about Sisasenkosi Mpofu’s decision to abandon her husband, Mbongeni Moyo, to spend the night with another man has captivated online audiences and sparked a wave of discussions on the internet.

Husband Left in Disbelief After New Wife Spends Wedding Night with Lover
According to B-Metro, after the wedding ceremony, Sisasenkosi Mpofu reportedly left her husband to spend the night with her secret lover, Geshom Gwatiringa, a police officer stationed at Hillside Police Station.

Moyo, a church elder at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Iminyela branch, was bewildered when his new wife returned the following day without an explanation for her absence.

Growing suspicious, Moyo decided to check her phone and discovered intimate messages exchanged between her and Gwatiringa.

In the days following the incident, Moyo allegedly conspired with his brother-in-law, Fungai Mpofu, and friends Prosper Ndlovu and Allen Munhuru to confront Gwatiringa. They arrived at Gwatiringa’s home around 1 a.m., where they accused him of infidelity.

“They went to Geshom’s place and arrived at around 1 am. They found him sleeping with his wife. They knocked at the door and he came outside. One of the accused persons grabbed Geshom by his neck accusing him of cheating with a married woman,” prosecutor Christina Manyika reported during the court proceedings.

Legal Proceedings Underway
Following the incident, a police case was filed against Moyo and his accomplices, leading to their arrest. They recently appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze, facing charges of attempted murder, to which they pleaded not guilty

Social Media Erupts with Reactions
The story has taken social media by storm, with users expressing disbelief at Mpofu’s actions. Many questioned why she would abandon her husband to spend the night with her lover on their wedding day.

Some users found humour in the story, jokingly suggesting that she was bidding her lover a final farewell. Meanwhile, others, especially women, sarcastically applauded Mpofu for what she did. They playfully advised men to pray for their marriages.

Cam’ron Gives Angel Reese Financial Advice Following Rant About WNBA Salary

0

few days ago, Angel Reese took to Instagram Live and revealed that her WNBA is not enough to even pay her rent – a revelation that most of her followers wondered if it was a joke that she was serious.

One person that seems to be concerned about the situation is Cam’ron.

On the latest episode of It Is What It Is, Cam and co-host Mase reflected on Angel Reese’s video, where she spoke about being unable to pay her bills with the checks she receives from the WNBA and how she relies on other sources of income to support her lifestyle.

Cam’ron insinuated that it was unreal how Reese didn’t know the details of her financial situation, and he hoped she didn’t go broke because of it.

After a round of laughs with the crew, Cam took a more serious tone and advised Reese to pay attention to who’s handling her finances and not screwing her over in the long run.

“All seriousness, Angel Reese, make sure you stay on top of these financial advisors, these accountants, these people taking care of your money because they’ll steal your shit in the middle of the night,” said Cam’ron.

“I’m having fun a little bit, but seriously, you make sure that you stay on top of all that because you’re young, you’re pretty, and you have a lot going on outside of the WNBA.”

He continued, “I’m pretty sure you have a lot of money coming in endorsements. Don’t take it for granted, and don’t sit here and think that it’s going to last forever because you’re still young; you have a lot of time, but make sure you watch your money and the people around you.”

The average pay scale in the WNBA has been a long-standing issue ever since the league was created in the mid-90s.

Angel Reese signed a four-year rookie contract totaling $324,383 with the Chicago Sky.

She also has quite a number of endorsement and partnership deals, which Cam’ron thinks will be necessary for her to pay attention to before she goes broke. A very usual phenomenon for most athletes.

Derrick Milano is a rapper-producer. He moved to Florida to pursue higher education at Full Sail University.

He began pursuing his music career at age 20. While in high school, he battle-rapped with friends and sang in the school choir.

According to Delaware Online, he didn’t start going by Derrick Milano until he started his career in 2013.

Although being a recording artist was always the goal at the top of Derrick’s list, he is best described as a man who continuously refuses to be boxed in.

His ability to shapeshift to fit whatever role is needed to bring the best out of any track he is working on makes him an undeniable influence in the room as a production connoisseur.

He has credits from working with Dani Leigh, Rich The Kid, Kiana Ledé, Justin Bieber, Cardi B, August Alsina, Pop Smoke,

His co-writing credit comes from working on Nicki Minaj’s “Yikes,” Justin Bieber, Kehlani, and Kiana Lede, and of course, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé, which won him a Grammy for co-writing Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé’s “Savage Remix.”

More recently, he appeared on Ciara’s R&B remix of “Da Girls.

He also added credits on DaniLeigh’s new track “Levi High” featuring DaBaby; Rich The Kid’s new album, BOSS MAN; and Kiana Lede’s “Forfeit” featuring Lucky Daye, with plenty more in the works behind the scenes.

Derrick and Angela’s Dating History
Derrick Milano and Angela White began dating in May 2023 just a few months after she publicly announced that she’d be going by her birth name in March 2023

Angela White has had quite the come-up since rebranding herself from her Blac Chyna past.

Derrick is White’s third fiancé and is the youngest long-term partner she’s had.

The two went public with the union in 2023, and it’s been a fairytale romance ever since.

One thing you can be sure of is that Derrick does love Angela as he frequently shares photos of her on Instagram with sweet captions and shows love for her business ventures.

White already has two children: King Cairo and Dream. However, she has hinted at having more children with Milano, and he is “absolutely” ready to have children of his own with her. But Derrick says he’s happy with the role as a stepfather for now.

The Next Step
The two are bringing their relationship to reality TV as they announce they’ve joined the cast of Love & Hip-Hop: Miami.

He told REVOLT that their appearance on the show won’t be the usual messiness associated with the show, though.

Milano went on to say that, “It’s a whole new spin to it.

Angela and I will be on the next season, and we’re pushing positivity, Black love, spirituality, and diffusing anything in relationships that can be handled and fixed.

We’re going to showcase what it looks like to collaborate and make music from top to bottom. It’s been fun.”

The 30-year-old also noted that he and his fianceé would “control their narrative” and “keep God on their side.”

He also mentioned that 7-year-old Dream “has about four songs ready to go” and she “motivates Angela [who] says her daughter makes her want to go in the studio and put in work.”

Fans will be able to see this in the upcoming season of Love & Hip-Hop: Miami.

Part of their arch will be him spotlighting “the power of the mother-daughter dynamic when it comes to society and music.”

New York City lawmakers are proposing a bill to let workers take time off to care for their sick pets

0

New York City lawmakers are proposing a bill to let workers take time off to care for their sick pets just like they would of a family member fell sick.

The proposal, sponsored by city council member Shaun Abreu, would amend and expand the Earned Safe and Sick Time Act (which requires companies to give employees paid sick leave to care for themselves or family members ) to include pets and service animals.

Abreu said mental health is a reason to incentivize pet ownership with the amended bill, citing research that owning pets can reduce cortisol, a stress-related hormone, and force people into physical activity and out of social isolation.

“I think that one of the simplest ways to support mental health is by encouraging pet ownership,” Mr. Abreu told the New York Times

“Keeping our pets healthy keeps us healthy,” he said.

However, the proposed bill named Introduction 1089 has received backlash from some who say workers may take advantage of costly company benefits, and that some employers may not be so gracious about granting a pet’s day off.

“These benefits cost money, and it’s one thing if the employee is sick and can’t come to work; it’s another thing if it’s a discretionary activity,” Kathryn Wylde, president of the Partnership for New York told the outlet.

“The concern is that ultimately it creates a pattern of raising the cost of living and doing business in New York,” Wylde added.

The law could be one of the first of its kind in a major metropolitan area.

Currently, New York City law gives workers at companies with 100 or more employees up to 56 hours of paid leave per year to care for themselves or family members, while those who work at smaller businesses may only get 40 hours per year.

Amending the law would allow time off to care for service animals and animals kept legally for companionship. However, the species of animal it would extend to has not yet been specified.

The legislation was referred to the Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection this week and if passed, the proposal will become law 120 days later.

Busta Rhymes Echoes Method Man’s Thoughts On Diddy’s Legal Drama

Busta Rhymes is on the same page as Method Man when it comes to his stance on Diddy‘s legal situation.

The Brooklyn rap legend spoke about the sex charges and mounting lawsuits against the embattled mogul while on the red carpet at the Venom: The Last Dance premiere in New York City, and made it a point to separate Diddy’s alleged crim

When asked about the “reckoning in Hip Hop,” Busta replied: “I think we need to stop doing a ‘Hip Hop’ scene. His situation is not a Hip Hop situation.”

The “Gimme Some More” MC also urged the public to not rush to condemn the Bad Boy boss before his trial has even begun.

“I also would like everyone to be mindful of the thirst and the urgency and the need to speak on the situation,” he added. “A lot of times, people don’t realize how insensitive it could be to have opinions on things that you have no understanding of outside of what you’re being told.

“We know that propaganda is a real thing, and we know that truth is a real thing. I’d like to wait for the truth before I really start to dive into trying to understand it. Understanding is the absence of confusion. Understanding is the reflection of knowledge and wisdom. The truth is undisputed.”

He continued: “We kind of confuse ourselves, prematurely pass judgement, and we’re not realizing how much we can directly and indirectly affect everyone involved with our unwarranted opinions. With that being said, I’m gonna reserve my opinions and I’m gonna wish the best for everyone involved.

“Everyone need to probably mind they damn business until the truth is undisputed. At that point, justice needs to be served accordingly for everyone involved. It’s unfortunate because I wouldn’t wish this upon my worst enemy. And I’m talking about the victims and I’m talking about for Diddy.”

Method Man made a similar point in an interview with TMZ last month, arguing that the allegations against Diddy have “nothing to do with Hip Hop.”

“I don’t think that it has anything to do with Hip Hop. What are we talking about here, really?” the Wu-Tang Clan icon said. “It has nothing to do with Hip Hop. I don’t see the correlation whatsoever.

“If we’re talking about creative and music and stuff like that, there are people still listening to R. Kelly‘s shit. I don’t think it has anything to do with Hip Hop.”

While Puffy remains in jail awaiting trial on sex trafficking and racketeering charges for allegedly abusing women for several years, Busta Rhymes is gearing up to release new music.

Earlier this week, the Flipmode Squad frontman announced that his 12th studio album will arrive on November 29.

Alongside an album artwork teaser which featured Busta’s logo and the eyes of a dragon, he wrote: “THE BLESSINGS DON’T STOP SO WE WON’T EVER STOP, EVER!! NEW ALBUM LOADING BY THE DRAGON DROPPING 11.29.24!! JESUS CHRIST!!”

Rihanna Reveals She Hopes To Have More Children: ‘I Wanna Have A Girl’

Rihanna makes no qualms about how much she enjoys being a boy mom, but she has revealed she’s hoping to balance out the energy in her house with a daughter.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published on Thursday (October 24), the singer and mother of two gushed about the “boy energy” at her house — which she shares with partner A$AP Rocky and their toddler boys, two-year-old RZA and nine-month-old Riot Rose.

“The best, I live for it,” she said. “It’s never a dull moment. I love when they climb off the chandeliers. I love when they literally are so scary that I’m forced to have fun. Me running around, me lifting them up, it’s all fun, it’s all exercise. But it works out for both of us, all of our kids.”

When interviewer Kevin Frazier brought up that he heard that Rih wants to add a little girl to her brood, the singer immediately confirmed.

“I wanna have a girl,” she added. “I wouldn’t know what to do ’cause I only know about boys so far. It will be a new adventure.

Watch Rihanna talk about family life starting at the at the 1:55 mark below.

A few weeks ago, Rihanna captured some of the zany boy energy she spoke of in a home video, which she soundtracked with the original Mission: Impossible theme song.
In the clip, the enterprising toddler is seen trying to climb his way out of the kiddy enclosure. After a couple of initial attempts, he figures out how to leverage himself onto a bench next to the playpen, climbs down and heads straight for his sippy cup.

“Being a boy mom is an Olympic sport,” Rihanna captioned the post, along with a face-palm emoji, blue heart and shrug emoji.

Earlier this month, Rihanna hit the red carpet for the launch of her Savage x Fenty line in Nordstrom, and spoke to Access Hollywood‘s Scott Evans about her journey as a mom.

“It’s fun, I literally, I enjoy it so much,” Rih gushed. “I am just looking at them and living through them and I’m amazed by every new discovery of theirs, even their boundaries. They’re teaching me how to be their mom as much as I’m teaching them how to be in this world and guide them as best as I can.”

And as for RZA becoming a big brother, he’s enjoying it just as much too!

“The second that his baby brother cries, he’s there,” she said. “He’s running down, he’s actually crying too. He’s worried. He loves him! It’s just hard to share toys and pacifiers.”

More Details Emerge On Death of Zimbabwe’s Youngest Chief

New details have emerged regarding the death of one of Zimbabwe’s youngest traditional leaders Chief Marupi from Dibilashaba in Gwanda South,

The 28-year-old, whose real name was Oaheng Nare, reportedly died after what was initially described as a short illness. However, it has now come to light that he passed away at Health Point Hospital in Harare after being admitted with severe stomach pain and vomiting.

Family Points Fingers at Zanu PF Councillor
Chief Marupi’s family is questioning the role of Mphathiswa Ncube, the local Zanu PF councillor and chairman of the Gwanda Rural District Council, who was the last person to see him alive. Ncube had reportedly driven the young chief to Harare for medical treatment, raising questions within the family as to why he couldn’t receive care in Bulawayo, which is closer to his home.

Molisa Nare, a local headman and relative of the late chief, said:

“We’re still in a state of confusion about his death because before he is taken to Harare he was complaining of a headache. Now we’re being told in Harare he had an upset stomach. The whole thing is difficult to understand. We hope the postmortem will shed some light.”

More Details Emerge On Death of Zimbabwe’s Youngest Chief
The chief’s aunt, Angelina Marupi Moyo, told community radio station Ntepe-Manama FM that the circumstances surrounding her nephew’s trip to Harare seemed mysterious. She explained that while the family knew he had a headache, learning that he was later admitted with severe vomiting and stomach pain has left them even more distressed.

She told local community radio station Ntepe-Manama FM:

“His departure from home for Harare is something we’re still trying to understand. Another thing is that we knew him to be having a headache and the new narrative from the hospital that he was vomiting and had a runny tummy adds to our confusion. We’re in pain over what has befallen us.”

ZANU-PF Councillor Declines to Comment Until After Burial
When reached for comment, Ncube said he would address the situation only after the burial.

“I’m sorry, for now I’m not in a position to comment. I will comment after the burial,” he told ZimLive.

The chief’s body was expected to be transported from Harare on Friday, with burial likely set for Sunday, according to family spokesperson Chris Marupi.

Halle Bailey Talks Self-Love After Breakup With Boyfriend

Actress and singer Halle Bailey has resorted to self-love following her recent breakup with her boyfriend. The 24-year-old and her ex-boyfriend have been together for about two years.

Bailey and her ex-boyfriend ended the love affair after welcoming their son, who is now 9 months old. The cause of the breakup was not disclosed when the Little Mermaid star spoke about the next chapter of her life in an interview.

She stated: “I think this new chapter in my life is just all about self-love and giving all that love that I pour out of myself back into myself… I feel like you have to fill yourself up to be able to love other people and beings.”

The television personality added that she was giving her son full attention because caring for a child was an essential part of motherhood.

“…My son, for example, I want to make sure I’m fully there for him… I think it’s essential to our self-worth…

“I think the best part of motherhood is knowing that you are being loved unconditionally by this beautiful being that you were given…he is a reminder to continue to love yourself and that you’re important and special because of how much he needs you,” Bailey said.

Apart from maternal duties, she also travels occasionally to cool off from work pressures and clear her mind.

“Travel is so important to me because it’s essential to my mental health….I work so much a lot of the time, and I’m a new mom—there are all these factors playing into my brain as a young woman now. And I feel like traveling really just helps me reset,” she added.

Hailey’s partner DDG, a YouTuber, stated their separation early this month, indicating that the decision “was not easy, but it was “the best path forward.”

“I cherish the time we’ve spent together and the love we’ve shared,” he stated, adding that they were still “best friends and adore each other.”

Born March 27, 2000, Halle Lynn Bailey was first known as a part of the musical duo Chloe x Halle, performing with her sister Chloe Bailey.

Their albums include The Kids Are Alright (2018) and Ungodly Hour (2020). They have both had five Grammy Award nominations. In 2023, Halle Bailey released her debut solo single Angel, which also earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song.

Diddy Scores Minor Victory In Bid To Be Released From Jail On Bail

Diddy has scored a minor victory in his attempt to be freed from jail as his bail appeal was put on hold while he awaits a new bail hearing in U.S. District Court.

The embattled mogul received the news on Thursday (October 24) when the order was filed.

Last week, independent reporter Meghann Cuniff shared information on the evolving situation, around the same time that the request was granted despite the objection of prosecutors.

“Prosecutors have filed opposition to Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ bail appeal with 2nd Circuit,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “In arguing that Judge Carter erred, Combs entirely ignores the serious and violent nature of the charges against him, and the strength of the evidence against him.”

In a second tweet, Cuniff added: “HOWEVER, Combs’ lawyers want the appeal put on hold while they pursue a new bail hearing in U.S. District Court.

“The renewed request is based on changed circumstances warranting a new bail hearing, which the district court is best suited to consider in the first instance.’”

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is allowing Sean “Diddy” Combs to put his bail appeal on hold while he seeks a new bail hearing in U.S. District Court.

Diddy has also recently received support from his family, who declared their support for the embattled mogul while also hitting out against the “absurd” claims and “false narratives” that have wreaked havoc on their family.

Six of the Bad Boy boss’ seven children — Quincy, Justin, Christian, Chace and twins Jessie and D’Lila — issued a joint statement on Instagram on Tuesday (October 22) addressing the intense scrutiny and speculation surrounding their father amid his criminal sex case and mounting sexual assault lawsuits.

Alongside a recent photo of them with their father in happier times, the Combs children wrote: “The past month has devastated our family. Many have judged both him and us based on accusations, conspiracy theories, and false narratives that have spiraled into absurdity on social media.

“We stand united, supporting you every step of the way. We hold onto the truth, knowing it will prevail, and nothing will break the strength of our family. WE MISS YOU & LOVE YOU DAD.”

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Injects US$32 Million to Stabilise ZiG Exchange Rates

RBZ Injects $32 Million to Calm Rising ZiG Forex Demands
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has injected US$32 million into the interbank foreign exchange market over the past three weeks in a bid to stabilise ZiG exchange rates. The move aims to bridge the supply-demand gap as demand rises for the upcoming summer agricultural season and the festive period, RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu announced yesterday.

Record Demand for Foreign Exchange
According to Governor Mushayavanhu, foreign currency pipeline demand has averaged US$15 million weekly, peaking at US$25 million this week as agricultural and festive season requirements take priority. “The Reserve Bank has been intervening in a timely manner,” he stated, describing the injection as essential to “address supply-demand mismatches” in foreign currency.

The RBZ’s latest action aligns with the Monetary Policy Committee’s recent policy guidance, issued on 27 September 2024. The measures included an emphasis on the “willing-buyer-willing-seller” (WBWS) foreign exchange system, which has shown promising uptake. Exporters and foreign currency holders, spurred by local currency tax obligations, have begun selling their foreign currency on the WBWS market. Mushayavanhu remarked, “This shows satisfactory increase in WBWS trading activities.”

Boost for Local Farmers and Businesses
The injection of US$32 million is designed to support sectors heavily reliant on foreign currency, particularly agriculture, which now sees rising demand for critical imports like fertilisers and equipment. The increase in foreign currency demand also reflects the end of Zimbabwe’s tobacco season, a significant contributor to forex supply, which has now slowed.

On 24 October, the RBZ offered a market-clearing sale of US$25 million; however, only US$19 million was purchased due to limited ZiG liquidity among buyers. “Prospective buyers did not have enough ZiG liquidity,” the Governor explained, highlighting how RBZ’s participation has reached a total of US$50 million in the WBWS market this October alone.

Continuing Monetary Policy Stance
Mushayavanhu concluded by reinforcing the RBZ’s commitment to a “tight monetary policy stance.” He assured that the reserve money will “remain fully backed at all times.” This approach, the Bank says, is vital to maintaining stability as Zimbabwe moves into its most financially active quarter.

With the festive season approaching and agricultural needs rising, the RBZ’s intervention is expected to ease some of the pressure, though challenges in liquidity remain. The RBZ will monitor the situation closely to maintain stability for both the economy and its citizens.

THE REPEAT OF LAST FARMING SEASON’S FAILURE,  IS UNCALLED FOR

THE REPEAT OF LAST FARMING SEASON’S FAILURE,  IS UNCALLED FOR.
==============================================

26, October, 2024| Saturday.

A mistake repeated more than once is a Decision – Alex Roberts.

It is my duty to speak out against the government’s failure to provide adequate support to our farmers. One of the most pressing issues we are facing is the shortage of fertilizer to cooperatives under the Farmers Inputs Support programme (FISP) and the most disturbing part of it is the loudness of government’s SILENCE. It is unacceptable that some beneficiaries on the Copperbelt specifically Kalulushi, Luanshya & Lufwanyama Districts a good number of famers have still not received the support they need to properly cultivate their crops.

I have been reliably informed that the finances are in place for the purchase of fertilizer & other inputs/implements, yet farmers are still waiting for their supplies and when it comes, still comes in shortages. This is a clear indication of mismanagement and negligence on the part of the government. Does the President really know that our farmers are the backbone of the economy, and they deserve to be given the tools they need to succeed?

I urge the Republican President H.E Hakainde Hichilema to take this year’s farming season with the seriousness it deserves and avoid what the nation went through in the previous farming season. The success of our agricultural sector is crucial for the well-being of our nation, and we cannot afford to let our farmers down in a manner Ba Hakainde Hichilema naba Mtolo Phiri are doing. It is time for the government to prioritize the needs of our agricultural sector and ensure that farmers are properly supported early.

Furthermore, I call on the Ministry of Agriculture to conduct a thorough research on the climate changes affecting our nation. It is important that our farmers are well-informed about the best seeds and crops to grow in different regions to avoid preventable disasters like the drought we experienced last farming season. By providing our farmers with the necessary information and resources, we can help them mitigate the impact of climate change and improve their yield.

In conclusion, it is time for the government to step up and support our farmers. We cannot afford to neglect the needs of those who work tirelessly to feed our nation. I urge the government to take action and ensure that our farmers are given the support they need to thrive.

We need to work together to build a strong and prosperous agricultural sector for the benefit of all Zambians twapapata.

State Functions
By Dickson Jere

When President Levy Mwanawasa, SC passed, he left a valid Last Will and Testament. One of his wishes in that Will was to be buried at his Palabana Farm. But after his death, the State decided to create a Presidential burial site opposite Cabinet Office where he is buried. The State took over the show by virtue of him being Head of State. Despite him being Baptist- at Twinpalm Congregation – Church Service was at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross where most State functions take place in Zambia.

Our founding President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda passed. His family demanded that he should be buried at his New Kasama home next to his dear wife Mama Betty Kaunda. Others suggested that his wishes were to be buried next to his parents in Chinsali. Despite the family demands, the State moved in and buried him at the Presidential burial site in Lusaka. The family even attempted Court action to stop the State but to no avail. Even though he was a putative UCZ – St Marks Congregation – his funeral service was at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

President Michael Sata died in office. He was a devout Catholic. His official funeral service was held at the Heroes stadium on account of crowds. To allow ordinary people to mourn him as he was the man of the people – we were told. This was one of the few times that the Presidential State funeral service was moved to the stadium and not another Church.

Rupiah Banda – had he not been President – wanted to be buried at his Chasimpha Farm in Chipata where his parents and siblings are buried. But he made it clear as President that he would respect the State wishes as he was the one who presided over the change of burial site for his predecessor Mwanawasa against his wishes in the Will. When he passed, I was one of those who traveled to Chipata to attend the traditional fungal funeral rites.
It was hot! The family (traditionalists) demanded for his body and that his burial was expected to be at his farm. It took the former parliamentarian Lucus Phiri to explain how the family lost control to the State the moment their son became “State Property” by accepting to be President. They reluctantly accepted.

President Frederick Chiluba was a well known Pentecostal. When he passed, his Church service was held at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross. The service was done by his Pentecostal Bishop but the venue.

And so, the memorial services for President Kaunda, Chiluba, Mwanawasa and Banda have all been held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross except for Sata that took place at St Ignitius Catholic Church in Lusaka.

In short, the Cathedral is place where Zambia holds most of its State functions by convention even other national day commemorations.

As for memorials, It was also decided by policy that once a President dies, the State will only organise two memorial functions – the 1st and 10th – while the family can do whatever events they want in the interim and forever more.

In short, when you become President, you and your family lose certain rights and privileges to the State.
It is what it is!

Anyway, Church is not even the building…

MURDER-ACCUSED, FORMER SOLDIER PUSHES FOR SALARY

MURDER-ACCUSED, FORMER SOLDIER PUSHES FOR SALARY

AN EX-SOLDIER, currently on trial on accusations of murdering Dr Tasila Tembo, an esteemed medic has sued the State over unpaid salaries for the past four years and terminal benefits by the Zambia Army.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/oSMkiLH9wUsPuvBf/?mibextid=oFDknk

Lt Mwaba wants the High Court to compel the State to pay him his salary arrears from the date of his arrest until his resignation from the Zambia Army.

The military man is undergoing trial for allegedly murdering Dr Tembo between October 24 and 26, 2020 after she decided to end their relationship.

Judgement was not rendered in the case following its conclusion, due to the sacking of Judge Wilfred Muma.

The case is being retried by judge Sharon Newa.

In his statement of claim, Mwaba stated that in 2020, he was apprehended and arrested for the office of murder, for which he is currently undergoing trial.

He said before his apprehension, he worked the full month of October, 2020, entitling him to a full salary for that month, but the Zambia Army decided to withhold his salary for unknown reasons.

“The State has also continued to withhold the plaintiff’s salary even after his apprehension or arrest, an action that is unlawful and unjustified considering that the defendant has continued to pay other army officers who are facing criminal charges before courts of law in a similar fashion as the plaintiff herein,” he said.

“The defendant has continued to pay the Plaintiffs’ loans with the bank and other organisations but has still continued to withhold the remainder of his salary.”

Mwaba stated that the State has not terminated  his contract of employment to date  despite him having resigned from the Zambia Army.

He said after his arrest there was several communications within the Zambia army command directing the salaries department to continue paying his salary but to no avail although the State has been issuing payslips to him.

Men’s said there is no law justifying the State’s  action to withhold his salary, especially that his fellow army officers undergoing criminal trials before different courts, have continued to receive their salaries unconditionally.

He said the action by Zambia army, to withhold his salary is in bad faith, discriminatory and not justified aimed at depriving him his income.

Mwaba said as a result he has suffered loss of income , inconvenience and mental anguish at the hands of the State.

He added that he is failing to pay school fees for his children and to meet their daily needs.

“The plaintiff has suffered mental anguish and depression as he has had to depend on family members to meet his and his children’s daily needs for survival,”stated Mwaba.

He is further seeking damages for loss of income, damages for inconvenience and mental anguish and any other relief the court may deem fit.

“I AM NOT A THIEF!”: DRAMA AS MWILA DODGES RE-ARREST IN COURT

DEC officers clash with former PF Secretary General Davies Mwila, who demands a call-out after the state drops corruption charges in court.

Lusaka, Zambia, October 24 – High drama unfolded at the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court yesterday when officers from the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) attempted to re-arrest former Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Davies Mwila moments after the state entered a nolle prosequi in his corruption case. Mwila, however, was not having any of it.

A visibly frustrated Mwila protested the sudden ambush, insisting that he would only cooperate if he received a proper call-out. “Don’t push me! I’ve been coming to court diligently. You failed to bring your witnesses, and now you want to harass me? I’m not running anywhere!” Mwila shouted, standing his ground like a man guarding his last goat.

In a move that raised eyebrows, the state dropped the case against Mwila and his co-accused, lawyer Ann Mwitwa, after prosecutor Mwangala Mwala admitted that no witnesses were available. The pair had been accused of possessing K102,600,000 suspected to be proceeds of crime. Despite multiple delays, the state’s witnesses seemed to have vanished faster than a campaign promise.

During the hearing, Magistrate Davies Chibwili rejected the state’s request for yet another adjournment, noting that no compelling reason had been provided. “The state has been making frantic efforts, but their witnesses have gone AWOL. We cannot adjourn forever while the accused twiddles his thumbs here,” Chibwili said, hinting at the absurdity of prosecuting a case without witnesses.

When the state finally threw in the towel with a nolle prosequi, things took a dramatic turn. As Mwila was preparing to leave the courtroom, DEC officers moved in, asking him to accompany them back to their offices. That’s when Mwila unleashed a verbal volley that had onlookers glued to the spectacle.

“I AM NOT A THIEF!” he bellowed, his voice echoing down the court corridors. “You people just charge anyone for fun! Even now, I will follow you, but not like this. I am coming to your offices on my terms. I have not stolen. I am not a thief!” Mwila insisted, as if daring the officers to bring their best game.

His defense lawyer, Charles Changano, quickly intervened, reminding the officers that without a warrant, any attempt to re-arrest Mwila would be illegal. “Gentlemen, where is your warrant? If you want to arrest him, follow the law, or we will have more drama than a telenovela,” Changano quipped, drawing chuckles from the crowd.

The DEC officers, realizing they were outmatched by Mwila’s defiance and Changano’s legal wit, reluctantly allowed Mwila to leave.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Changano expressed doubts about the state’s sudden withdrawal of the case. “The nolle prosequi is highly suspicious. The state failed to produce witnesses, yet here they are, still trying to corner my client. It feels like someone is more interested in harassment than justice,” he said.

Mwila, looking triumphant but still brimming with frustration, promised to visit the DEC offices—just not under duress. “If they think I’m running, let them keep waiting. I’ll visit them when I’m good and ready,” he said with a grin, climbing into his car and waving off the DEC officers like a coach calling time-out.

As Mwila drove off, spectators agreed that the day’s drama rivaled a football match at half-time. “This is Zambia—where justice is served with a side of comedy,” one onlooker remarked, shaking his head.

For now, Mwila walks free, leaving the DEC officers to lick their wounds and plot their next move. Whether this saga is truly over, or just half-time in a long political game, only time will tell.

New details emerge on rumours about Diddy being ‘responsible’ for Jamie Foxx’s 2023 hospitalization

0

New details have emerged concerning rumours about American rapper, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs being ‘responsible’ for actor Jamie Foxx’s hospitalization in 2023.

The actor, 56, has been filming his upcoming Netflix special, ‘What Had Happened Was’, and three eyewitnesses who attended the tapings told Page Six he discussed claims that Diddy, 54, caused his medical emergency.

Two of them claim that Foxx said Diddy was responsible for what happened to him, and that he ‘is the one who called the FBI on [Combs]’, who’s currently in prison awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

A source close to Diddy insisted that ‘there is no truth to Sean Combs putting Jamie Foxx in the hospital.’

It’s unclear if the comments were intended as a joke or how others in the audience interpreted them.

Big Homie .CC, a celebrity security guard, claimed in an interview with Cam Capone News last week that Foxx was ‘poisoned’ by Diddy.

‘I know [Combs] poisoned Jamie Foxx, and Jamie Foxx reported him to the FBI because of it… Jamie Foxx reported this man to the FBI because of this,’ he claimed.

Big Homie .CC told Page Six his claims are based on hearing Foxx describe the story at two of his comedy show tapings, which the security guard said he attended with a client.

Videographer Choke No Joke revealed he attended two of Foxx’s three shows in Atlanta earlier this month. The shows took place on Oct. 4, 5 and 6 at the Alliance Theatre.

‘Jamie has a special coming out on Netflix called “What Had Happened Was,” and I went to the taping of it. It was three days taping. I went to the first show; I went to the last show,’ he said in an interview on Comedy Hype.

Choke claimed Foxx said during the tapings that ‘Diddy was responsible for what happened to him, and [Foxx] is the one who called the FBI on [Combs].’

It’s not clear if the alleged comments will be included in the final cut of the special.

When asked if the comments were made as a ‘joke,’ Choke said, ‘I don’t think he was joking.’

‘Y’all can determine was he joking or not when you see the show, ’cause to me — I’m a new comedian, right? … I know when somebody’s setting up a punchline, and I know when you’re serious.’

‘After [Foxx] said, “Diddy did something to me,” he said, “And I’m the one who called the feds on him,”‘ Choke restated, adding that Foxx might have done so because he was ‘scared.’

‘He disappeared, right? He out now, soon as Puff went to jail, right? We see him at the game with [Dallas Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones, right?… We haven’t seen him. As soon as Puff went to jail, [Foxx] was at the goddamn Dallas football game, right? And now he just went and shot his special. And who’s the special strongly based around? Diddy,’ he further claimed.

Choke claimed Foxx and Diddy appeared to be ‘bros’ until something allegedly caused a rift between them.

In a statement to Page Six, Choke expressed his shock that Foxx had publicly made the claims, adding he and other industry insiders had previously heard the rumors.

However, Dennis L.A. White, a third attendee, told Page Six he went to the second and third tapings of the show, and his recollections were slightly different.

White shared he heard Foxx say something more in line of, ‘People keep asking me if Diddy was responsible. He was not responsible. If he was, I would’ve been dead.’

He also added he did not remember Foxx talking about the FBI or law enforcement, though he did say the actor spent a good portion of the sets discussing Combs, and even making jokes about ‘baby oil.’

Following his tapings, Foxx shared two photos from the stage, including one of him wiping away tears, as well as a heartfelt message on Instagram.

‘God is good…. As I post these pictures, my heart and my soul is filled with nothing but pure joy…on October 3 fourth and fifth I had an opportunity to tell my side of the story and there was no better place than Atlanta Georgia.’

‘I have to thank you Atlanta you showed up and you showed out, I haven’t been on stage in 18 years but I needed the stage and I needed an audience that was made up of nothing but pure love and that’s what you were.’

‘When people ask me is this a stand up comedy show I say no it’s an artistic explanation. Of some thing that went terribly wrong, but thanks to the great people in Atlanta especially piedmont hospital you enabled me to come back and be on stage and do what I love to do the most… #nobaddays as my guy James would say #secondchance.’

Woman sentenced for shooting boyfriend de@d after he brought food home for her

0

A woman attempted to plead self-defense in the shooting de@th of her boyfriend as he returned to their shared home with McDonald’s for her and the children, but the jury wasn’t buying it.

Alexandria Griste, 31, had initially been charged with first-degree m*rder after police in Oxford, Mississippi responded to her 9-1-1 call on June 8, 2022.

He was pronounced de@d at the scene, but Griste was able to avoid a first-degree murder conviction.

After three hours of deliberation, the jury found her guilty of the lesser charge of imperfect self-defense manslaughter.

On Tuesday, October 22, Griste was sentenced to 20 years in the state penitentiary following her conviction the previous Friday, October 18, as covered by The Oxford Eagle. It is the maximum sentence allowed for that conviction.

Griste made a statement at her sentencing. She told the judge she did not intend to hurt anyone, “but I was protecting myself and my children.”

In court, testimony revealed that Griste and Lyles had begun arguing via text message on the evening of July 7, 2022, purportedly because he’d left the house without telling her.

Text messages revealed in court showed the combative couple discussing Lyles picking up McDonald’s for the family before they began to argue. At one point, she sent him a text that said he’d be “de@d” if he returned to the home they shared, per The Oxford Eagle.

She reportedly retrieved a 9mm gun from her sock drawer and waited for him to pull up at the house, where the argument continued. Testimony stated that her intent was only to warn him off so he would leave.

Griste purportedly stated that Lyles was angry and moving toward her aggressively, which is why she fired three warning shots.

The defendant described Lyles as an MMA fighter, explaining, per the paper, that he had hurt her before. No evidence of past abuse was presented during the trial.

She said that when he continued coming at her, she fired through a window in their door at him. Police reported finding Lyles’ body several feet from the door.

Her defense attorney, Steve Farese, said that there was no evidence to prove she was not in fear for her life at that moment, emphasizing that she’d been cooperative with law enforcement throughout, and even had been the one to place the 9-1-1 call.

“What kind of a world is it if a woman can’t protect herself and her children?” Farese said in his closing, per The Eagle.

The prosecution countered this narrative, with District Attorney Ben Creekmore stating in court, per the newspaper, that there was no indication Lyles had arrived at the house with intention to harm anyone as he’d come with food for her and her children, and remained in his vehicle after pulling up for several minutes.

Twice homeless millionaire tops UK black power list

0

A man who was twice homeless as a teenager before becoming a multimillionaire entrepreneur has topped a list celebrating influential black Britons.

Dean Forbes, who, after failing to make it as a professional footballer, began his career in a call centre, is now the boss of a software company.

He worked his way up from “abject poverty” on an estate in south-east London to become chief executive of Forterro, a Swedish software firm.

Forbes said topping the Powerlist 2025 was a “professional and career high”.

He told the BBC that although he grew up in a single-parent family on a housing estate in Lewisham, his disabled mum always encouraged her children to be positive, and gave them hope.

He said he had a “whale of a time” growing up despite having little money, living in a local community which “looked after each other”.

His said his mum taught him and his two brothers to “raise our expectations”, “never to be victims” and not dwell on misfortunes.

He twice became homeless as a teenager, but said he and his family always saw these as temporary challenges to be overcome.

He managed to get a place at Crystal Palace Academy, but it didn’t work out.

He points to that failure as a key moment in his eventual success, because it made him more determined.

“Thanks to that disappointment and rejection, it put me on this path which is beyond my wildest dreams,” he said.

He had been borrowing money to “keep up appearances” with friends like then-footballer Rio Ferdinand who were being “paid well”, but he was eventually left with an £88,000 debt pile.

To start to clear that, he got a job in a Motorola call centre, and he quickly worked his way up.

He moved to a software firm called Primavera which he helped build up, and made his first millions after it was sold to Oracle: he had taken an equity stake.

Forbes moved from there and was chief executive of two software firms, KDS and CoreHR, each time taking equity stakes, and making millions more.

He also has an equity stake in Forterro, which he said was a firm which makes more than €300m (£250m) in revenue per year and earnings of €130m.

Despite his wealth, he said he never wanted “to lose the value of a pound”.

He was able to buy his mum a home, and his children “have never had to deal with anything I had to deal with” in terms of poverty.

He now describes celebrities like Ferdinand and actor Idris Elba as close friends.

But he told the BBC his roots remained very important to him and he wanted to inspire and give opportunities to others who have not started out with advantages in life.

‘Open the door’

Forbes and his wife Danielle set up the Forbes Family Group, a philanthropic organisation for people in underserved communities.

They are working to try to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage, and give people positive role models.

“My experience has made me painfully aware that there is so much talent in these communities – you just need to open the door a crack” to give people a chance, he said.

Forbes said that as he was growing up the only black people he could see who were successful seemed to be in entertainment, sport, or “doing unsavoury things” in criminal gangs.

He said he wanted to make success in business more “relatable” in part through mentoring and networking projects.

He has now been named number one on the Powerlist 2025, after being number two last year.

The annual Powerlist was first published in 2007, with its aim to provide role models for young black people, according to Powerful Media.

Forbes takes the place of British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful at the head of the list.

The top 10 of the Powerlist for 2025 is:

  1. Dean Forbes, chief executive at software firm Forterro
  2. Bernard Mensah, president of international at Bank of America
  3. Afua Kyei, chief financial officer at the Bank of England
  4. Emma Grede, chief executive at fashion brand Good American
  5. Joshua Siaw, partner at law firm White & Case
  6. Tunde Olanrewaju, senior partner at consultancy McKinsey
  7. Alexander and Oliver Kent-Braham, founders of insurance firm Marshmallow
  8. Adejoke Bakare, chef-owner at Michelin-starred restaurant Chishuru
  9. Justin Onuekwusi, fund manager at St. James’s Place
  10. Pamela Maynard, chief AI transformation officer at Microsoft

Uganda sentences LRA commander Thomas Kwoyelo to 40 years for war crimes

0

A court in Uganda has sentenced Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander Thomas Kwoyelo to 40 years in prison after a landmark war crimes trial over his role in the group’s two-decade reign of violence.

The sentence was announced on Friday by Michael Elubu, the lead judge in the case, at a court in the northern city of Gulu.`

Justice Duncan Gasagwa, one of four judges on the case, said “the convict played a prominent role in the planning, strategy and actual execution of the offences of extreme gravity”.

He added that “the victims have been left with lasting physical and mental pain and suffering”.

Kwoyelo was found guilty in August of 44 offences, including murder and rape, and not guilty of three counts of murder. Thirty-one alternate offences were dismissed.

Landmark trial

The trial marked the first time a member of the LRA had been tried by Uganda’s judiciary. It was also the first atrocity case to be tried under a special division of the high court that focuses on international crimes.

Founded in the late 1980s with the aim of overthrowing the government of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, the LRA brutalised Ugandans under the leadership of Joseph Kony for nearly 20 years as it battled the military from bases in northern Uganda.

The fighters were notorious for horrific acts of cruelty, including hacking off victims’ limbs and lips and using crude instruments to bludgeon people to death.

Kwoyelo, believed to be in his fifties, was a low-level commander of the LRA, tasked with caring for the group’s injured members, according to his testimony.

He says he was forced to join the LRA in 1987, after the group’s members abducted him on his way to school at age 12, at the peak of the rebel conflict. He went on to become a senior commander, using the alias Latoni, and overseeing the treatment of wounded fighters.

In 2009, Kwoyelo was captured in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a raid by regional forces. The LRA rebels had been forced out of northern Uganda into DRC and other neighbouring countries a few years earlier because of the Ugandan military’s offensives on the group.

Kwoyelo was brought back to Uganda, having suffered a bullet wound to his stomach.

He spent the next 14 years in prison as the prosecution put the case against him together.

Due to his long pre-trial detention by the Ugandan authorities, some had advocated for Kwoyelo’s release.

“Our children are innocent because they were forcefully conscripted into combat,” Okello Okuna, a spokesperson for Ker Kwaro Acholi, a traditional kingdom in Gulu, told Al Jazeera in February.

Rights groups, such as Avocats Sans Frontieres, pointed out that holding Kwoyelo in detention for more than a decade muddled the case for the prosecution.

But others, including victims, said Kwoyelo was involved in killings and torture, and should therefore face justice.

“He was a rude person and a fighter,” a victim who was born in LRA captivity and identified only as Jaqueline told Al Jazeera in February, adding that Kwoyelo killed her father for failing to follow orders.

Defence lead lawyer Caleb Akala had consistently pleaded Kwoyelo’s innocence, arguing that he was himself a child victim of the LRA.

However, witnesses maintained Kwoyelo led several LRA incursions and was involved in killings.

Judge Gasagwa said Kwoyelo avoided the death sentence because he was recruited by the LRA at a young age, was not one of the top-ranking commanders, and has expressed remorse and a willingness to reconcile with the victims.

Thousands of children were abducted by the group and used as sex slaves or child soldiers.

The LRA is designated as a terror group by the United Nations, the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

A Reflection on Zambia’s Diamond Jubilee: “60 Years Strong: Honouring Our Heritage, Embracing the Future.”

One Zambia One Nation

A Reflection on Zambia’s Diamond Jubilee: “60 Years Strong: Honouring Our Heritage, Embracing the Future.”

The Rt. Rev. Dr. Musonda Trevor Selwyn Mwamba; President of the United National Independence Party (UNIP).

24 October, 2024

60 years ago, on 24th October 1964, Zambia was born as a nation. If we liken it to a person’s birth it was a moment of immense joy and hope.

Martin Buber the great philosopher described the significance of a birth in this profound thought:

“Every person born in this world represents something new,  something that never existed before, something original and unique, and every person’s foremost task is the actualisation of his or her unique, unprecedented, and never recurring possibilities.”

We can paraphrase this insightful thought by substituting person for nation and Zambia being that nation:

“Every nation born in this world represents something new, something that never existed before, something original and unique, and every nation’s foremost task is the actualisation of her unique, unprecedented, and never recurring possibilities.”

60 years ago a historic moment took place with the birth of Zambia. And since then yearly we seek to draw inspiration and hope from that moment of Independence so we loss not the purpose, sacrifice, and vision of our founders that brought about our freedom.

60 years on its significant for us to pause and reflect on our independence as Zambians with a spirit of gratitude.

60 Years Strong: Honouring Our Heritage, Embracing the Future means the hearts of the old must not forget and the new generation must learn to appreciate with gratitude the many sacrifices and sufferings the founders of modern Zambia went through to achieve our independence our freedom. We owe them much.

Every generation from independence and generations to come will forever be indebted to those who sacrificed and died to gain our independence. We can never take Zambia’s independence for granted.

This independence October 24, 2024, is ideal for us to pause and reflect and ask ourselves if we have lived up to the spirit of Independence this embracing the future in the now.

In pausing and reflecting on our independence may we become aware of vital truths of how Zambia got its name, how the date 24 October, 1964, was chosen as Independence Day; and the message of the national anthem.

Now our country was named Zambia by Mr Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, our first Foreign Minister and second Republican Vice President in 1958.

This is how it came about. In 1958 the young freedom fighters, among them, Munukayumbwa Sipalo, Reuben Kamanga, Whittington Sikalumbi, Simon Kapwepwe, and Kenneth Kaunda, left the African National Congress (ANC) led by Mr Harry Nkumbula, to form a new party.

They were visionary and looking to the future wanted a name for the country after which to name the new party, so Mr Whittington Sikalumbi, suggested the early Portuguese name Zambezia after the Zambezi river but Mr Kapwepwe shortened it to Zambia.

On October 24, 1958, the new party Zambia African Congress (ZANC) was born. It was banned shortly after but reborn as the United National Independence Party (UNIP) in 1959.
UNIP was a mass movement and functioned as a coalition of the ethnic groupings of Zambia.

Six years later the Independence Constitution provided that Northern Rhodesia would become a republic under the new name ‘Zambia’, with a president as its head of state.

The stage was set for independence.
Zambia’s independence day October 24, 1964, coinciding with the United Nations Day, was prudently chosen by our founders to connect with the goals and ideals of the United Nations Charter.

As fate would have it the greatest second Secretary General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold died in Zambia in 1961.

October 24, was also chosen by the founders because it’s the birthday of UNIP. The Constitution of the United National Independence Party under Article 3 – Events Festivities of the Party states simply: 24 October, 1958 – birth of the Party.

Reflecting further on Zambia’s independence a national anthem was chosen that embodied the spirit and soul of the nation.

The national anthem is actually a hymn with its roots in South Africa. Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrica, Lord Bless Africa. It was composed in 1897 by
the Revered Enoch Sontonga a Methodist minister.

The song became a pan-African liberation song and versions of it were later adopted as the national anthems of five countries in Africa  apart from Zambia, Tanzania, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The song’s melody is still used in national anthems of Tanzania and Zambia. Zimbabwe and Namibia have since changed to new anthems with other melodies.

The Zambia national anthem invokes God, it exhorts God, and seeks God’s blessings and guidance on the country. Growing up I remember that every Zambian could proudly sing it by heart. In honouring our heritage every Zambian who doesn’t know the anthem should do so.

“Stand and sing of Zambia, proud and free,Land of work and joy in unity,Victors in the struggle for the rights,We’ve won freedom’s fight. All one, strong and free.IIAfrica is our own motherland,Fashion’d with and blessed by God’s good hand, Let us all her people join as one,Brothers under the sun.All one, strong and free.IIIOne land and one nation is our cry,Dignity and peace ‘neath Zambia’s sky, Like our noble eagle in its flight,Zambia, praise to thee. All one, strong and free.Chorus:Praise be to God,Praise be, praise be, praise be,Bless our great nation,Zambia, Zambia, Zambia.Free men we standUnder the flag of our land. Zambia, praise to thee! All one, strong and free.

With the name Zambia in place, the date fixed October 24, 1964, and national anthem picked, Zambia was born with the hoisting of the Zambian flag at midnight on October 24, 1964.

The hoisting of the flag symbolised the lifting of the aspirations, dreams, hopes, and vision of every Zambian for a democratic and prosperous nation; where Zambians would live in peace and harmony regardless of their political, economic, social and religious beliefs.

Zambia’s birth represented something new which never existed before, something original and unique. The future pointed to the uplifting of the lives of the Zambian people.

Zambia was blessed at independence with leaders from all the provinces and races endowed with vision and a spirit of service and dedication to the nation.

The leaders cognisant of the challenges Zambia faced had the intelligence to perceive that she could not develop without peace and unity.

Accordingly the chief cornestone of Zambia became One Zambia One Nation which was refleced in the first cabinet.

The motto One Zambia One Nation originates from the UNIP Constitution under the Fundamental Principles and Objectives:

Article 2(1) says:

The motto of the Party shall be, ‘One Zambia One Nation’.

The motto of UNIP then became the motto of the nation. This motto is a prayer, a vow, a mantra, a vision of uniting the different ethnic groups, races, creed, religions, as one people in Zambia. It’s about an inclusive not exclusive Zambia where nobody should ever feel left out because we are all one.

The UNIP government made this motto a reality by abhorring tribalism. President Kaunda had a carefully crafted tribal balancing system in the cabinet, in the civil service, in the parastatals, and in all the appointments he made across the country so that not one ethnic group was left out or dominated.

Educationally, a system was created where students were moved from their provinces of origin to other provinces as part of the plan to create a nation that was One Zambia One Nation.

Economically, the promotion of One Zambia One Nation was done by ensuring that each of the provinces in Zambia had an industry to propel its development. For example, the pineapple industry in Mwinilunga , the Battery factory in Mansa, the car assembly plant in Livingstone, and the glass factory in Kapiri Mposhi.

One Zambia One Nation was the responsibility of every Zambian to build a wholistic united nation where everybody felt significant and included.

UNIP 60 years ago planted a seed of inclusivity for Zambians to pursue a policy of love, equality, truth, justice, fairness, liberty, solidarity, peace, political, economic and social development for all.

60 years later the spirit of One Zambia One Nation our founders bequeathed is in danger of annihilation.

We are dangerously close to the cliff and need to get back quickly on track to the noble values enshrined in the motto One Zambia One Nation.

The visionary leaders of Independence understand well that peace and unity were indispensable to the development of Zambia. This wisdom is for all times to inspire and guide present and future leaders.

The vision before us is that the new Zambia should always embrace a government of national unity. This will require all political parties to work harmoniously together in promoting peace and unity and prosperity for the country. To strengthen this vision it will entail enshrining a provision in the Zambian Constitution that all future governments shall be of national unity in the spirit of the motto One Zambia One Nation. As the motto ultimately means the national interest of Zambia is supreme above all personal and selfish ambitions of any politician or Party.

60 years ago the men and women in political leadership displayed this unmistakable patriotism.

Though many of our visionary founders were of humble education they embodied the passion to see Zambians benefit from independence, of which the most critical one they determined was education.

Andrew Sardanis’ brilliant book, Zambia: The First 50 Years, wrote  that “waking up on the morning of 24th October 1964, as masters of our own destiny, there was only one Zambian engineer, three Zambian doctors, three Zambian lawyers and some 90 other Zambian graduates.”

They were only three secondary schools in the country and no university. Yet with this abysmal foundation they gave each province a secondary school, and built the University of Zambia. They transformed Zambia into the education powerhouse that helped educate most of the English speaking countries of the Southern African region.

The early years of Independence saw huge investments in quality education. Sadly over the years there has been a deplorable decline in huge investments and in educational standards and crumbling infrastructures.

60 years on if we have to progress as a nation we need to invest again hugely in quality education for all Zambians. We need a focused and wholistic education in the arts, sciences, technology, sports, agriculture, and mining empowering Zambians to utilise the resources God has endowed the country with.

It was because of quality education that the founders conceived and developed state owned enterprises that produced young business executives who were able to hold their own on internationally.

With quality education embracing the future Zambians will know their civic responsibilities; make informed choices at the polls making democracy more viable; and strengthening of institutions uncompromising in their commitment to the rule of law and protection of human rights.

In Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince there is part where the fox says that what’s essential is invisible. And so it is when we pause and reflect on the 60 anniversary of Independence to a very large extent it is invisible.

It has to do with context and the characters of the founders. Indeed that invisible essential attribute was their characters.

Their characters were rooted in belief in God and moral values. The hoisting of the Zambian flag on 24 October, 1964 was about pursuing wholesome values that are very important in life.

As President Kenneth Kaunda never tired of reminding us:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

On these two commandments are the essential invisibles of life and the ancient prophet Micah condensed in them in these ageless words:

‘He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’

It’s these values over the past years Zambians have lost and as we celebrate our 60th independence celebration must remember and rekindle in our lives and nation.

Zambia shall enter a new future only by reconnecting with the values that laid the foundation of her birth that is our connection with God and one another. Our connection with integrity and service.

Inspired in moral values we are always driven to do the right things and enobled, we become better people and nation.

Moral values stirs us to uplift the poor for this is what really matters in life. Zambia pausing and reflecting at 60 should make us strongly aware of what do we value in the communities we live? What kind of Zambia, what kind of world, do we really want to be, if not to uplift the poor?

The hoisting of the Zambian flag on 24 October, 1964 was about pursuing the wholesome values very important in life of helping one another. For we are all children of God.

It’s these values over the past years we have gradually lost and as we celebrate our 60th independence celebration we pray may be rekindled in our lives and nation.

At 60 Years Strong: Honouring Our Heritage, Embracing the Future. I believe in all sincerity Zambia can enter a new future by reconnecting with the moral values of integrity and service for the good of our people.

To guarantee a better Zambia for generations to come we need to go back to the future. In others words as Marcus Garvey wisely wrote:

“A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”.

We learn from the first Independence the values we need to build a prosperous Zambia that is able to uplift our people and create a better life for them.

We learn by honouring our heritage of One Zambia One Nation to build the future.

On this 60th Independence celebration: God bless Zambia; God bless her leaders; God bless her peoples and grant her peace and unity and a prosperous future.

SOME 60 YEARS OF LESSONS NOT TO FORGET IN ORDER TO CHANGE OUR NARRATIVE BEYOND THE INDEPENDENCY ANNIVERSARY- HON. Lucky Mabenga Mulusa

0

HON. Lucky Mabenga Mulusa

SOME 60 YEARS OF LESSONS NOT TO FORGET IN ORDER TO CHANGE OUR NARRATIVE BEYOND THE INDEPENDENCY ANNIVERSARY

As your older generations, we made mistakes. Please do not repeat them. Guard yourselves against them. Here they are:

1. 27 YEARS OF KAUNDA
a. LESSONS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEARNT: We put ourselves in a position where the donor community dictated state policy. This was made possible by mainly internal factors driven by political interference in the management of the state’s participation in the economy thus leaving our parastatals operating very inefficiently and at 40% capacity by 1989. Change was therefore at the instigation of foreign sources.

2. 10 YEARS OF MMD UNDER CHILUBA
a. LESSONS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEARNT: Reckless privatization in which a parastatal privatised yesterday got stripped and plant and machinery relocated abroad leaving previously dependable jobs taken away but we went ahead to privatize the next parastatal.
b. The aim of privatization we were told was to increase efficiencies in the economy, grow our industrial base, create employment, reduce poverty and grow human development. Every single day, we reaped the opposite and never cared to change course. Monitoring and evaluation eluded us. Today we are way below the industrial base we once had achieved.

3. 8 YEARS OF LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA
a. LESSONS THAT WE SHOULD HAVE LEARNT: State capture of the fight against corruption programme by agents engaged to take that noble task. No accountability of assets or funds confiscated, personalization of proceeds and simply blatant abuse of a noble cause. Giving away of state assets in unbeneficial development agreements (KCM), and unnecessary tax incentives that got abused by benefiting investors. Result? Fight against corruption costed more than results accomplished.

4. 3 YEARS OF RB
a. LESSONS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEARNT: State capture of a seemingly well run administration leading to citizens’ frustration finally leading to an unnecessary regime change despite excellent economic performance indicators.

5. 3 YEARS OF SATA
a. LESSONS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEARNT: Clear vision to modernize the infrastructure of the country previously done by 1975 meant to make Zambia more competitive in terms of reduction in the cost of production of goods and services through reduced cost of transportation as a percentage component that sat at 60%. Politically instead of economically driven project prioritization in the Link Zambia 8000 thus robbing ourselves of the benefits of the project cross-subsidization from the well thought through programme.

6. 7 YEARS OF ECL
a. LESSONS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEARNT: Efforts of continuing with Sata’s vision were faced with high tides and relentless efforts for state recapture thus leading to many officials falling prey to the past evils and consequently leading to regime change which citizens now wish to reverse.

7. 3 YEARS OF UPND UNDER HH
a. LESSONS THAT SHOULD BE LEARNT: Lack of prioritization and patriotism in policy formulation coupled with taking advantage of lacunas in the constitution, subsidiary legislated laws and in accompanying policies and procedures for personal enrichment.
b. Lack of respect for legislated planning thus rendering national plans so exercised as mere exercises of compliance.
c. Failure to respect and uphold true separation of power among the three arms of government.

KEY NOTES
1. We need to give hope to our future generations. We need to grant them opportunities of a life that does not reflect personal, family, society and national suffering from child to adulthood if at all, one makes it to that stage.

2. There was a time in Zambia when we had more jobs than the available local candidates to take them up. There were times when graduates had more than one job offer at graduation but today, there are no jobs or opportunities at every exit point of schooling, sometimes, for the entire life of an individual. There is a serious problem of unemployment and juvenile delinquency leading to increased crime levels among many other vices.

3. We have an eight billion global market, a one billion African market, and close to half a billion regional market which we keep on surrendering carelessly to the rest of the global society without ever taking advantage of, when all we need is, simply doing things the right way.

4. Our biggest mistake from government to government has been our overly optimistic view of the state’s carrying capacity and as a result, we overburden the fiscus due to politically, rather than economically motivated developmental initiatives.

5. Some behaviors have been nimbly projecting good character but not influencing systems changes. Brigadier General Miytanda for instances, would ensure that he accounted for all the imprest given but then presided over a government team that did the opposite and some such as Hon. Mpombo, MHSRIP and Hon. Mandandi found themselves on the wrong side of the law for the same deeds the General promoted and practiced. The question is, what did he do to help stem the practice? That is the question. Let us not go into government to take advantage of lacunas in the laws but help at the least sustain, protect and defend the system so found.

6. Just do the right thing and the nation will move in the right direction from the 60th birth year. Nature follows being! Good practices from the lessons learnt will drive our country into the positive phase of where we want to be – the Vision 2030.

SP ACCUSE ELVIS NKANDU OF ENGAGING IN ELECTORAL MALPRACTICES

….says he will be prosecuted for all these crímes when UPND leaves office in 2026

Kawambwa… Friday, October 25, 2024

The opposition Socialist Party (SP) has accused Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu of engaging in electoral malpractices during by-elections since 2021 when the UPND came into office.

The opposition political party says Mr Nkandu should not think he will get away with these crímes he is committing now.

SP Chief Presidential Advisor Brian Hapunda says even the District Commissioners who are being used during these by-elections, will account for these crímes after the 2026 polls.

“Mr Elvis Nkandu has engaged in many electoral malpractices since 2021 when the UPND came into power. And he thinks he can get away with it! Today he is known as honorable “Tantameni” and he knows very well that what he is doing now is very wrong. He is using District Commissioners in by-elections by removing number plates, disguising them as private vehicles when they are government vehicles. He has engaged in many several electoral malpractices, and because he has done it for a long period of time, he thinks it is normal. Yes there maybe impunity today, but he will be prosecuted for all these crímes when UPND leaves office in 2026,” said Mr Hapunda.

“The people he is sending, we are in touch with them. The same people he is sending today, will be the same people who will be testifying against him. He shouldn’t think he will get away with it. But this is not new with Mr Nkandu! He was notorious under the MMD, to a point where when Mr Michael Sata won the elections, Elvis Nkandu had to leave the country. He fled the country, he had to come back when the dust had settled. And we thought he had leant something from that, but he has continued.”

He further warned the DCs who are using government vehicles during campaigns by removing number plates saying they shouldn’t cry foul when they are followed after 2026.

“As for the DCs who are allowing themselves to be used as election cadres during by-elections, they should not cry foul at the end of this term when they will be chased like dogs. They are civil servants. If they are UPND cadres, they should be paid by the UPND party, but if they are working for the people of Zambia, they will have to be paid using tax payers’ money. And we know which DCs are participating in by-elections and they shouldn’t think they will get away with it. We are restraining our people from going for them because we are not lawless,” he concluded.

Joint Task Force Cracks Down on Illegal Fuel Vending in Lusaka: Eight Arrested, 4,695 Litres of Fuel Seized

Joint Task Force Cracks Down on Illegal Fuel Vending in Lusaka: Eight Arrested, 4,695 Litres of Fuel Seized

Lusaka, Zambia – October 24, 2024

In a sweeping operation led by Zambia’s Joint Task Force on Illegal Fuel Vending, eight people were arrested, and nearly 5,000 litres of illegally stored fuel were seized in an effort to curb unlawful fuel sales in Lusaka and nearby areas.

The operation, conducted by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in collaboration with the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) and other law enforcement agencies, began on October 23rd and continued through the early hours of October 24th. Targeted raids were carried out at various suspected illegal fuel vending sites across Lusaka Province, including Mukwa Road, Katanga Road, Matero Compound, Nampundwe Junction, Chifwema near Sinoma Cement, and sites in Chongwe, Shimabala, and Six Miles.

Authorities seized approximately 4,695 litres of fuel, valued at over ZMW 153,526, along with 20 drums, 30 twenty-litre containers, four pumps, five ten-litre containers, a generator, and a tanker truck outfitted with siphoning pipes. The tanker was impounded on suspicion that fuel had been illegally siphoned from it. Among the eight individuals detained was one suspected prohibited immigrant, highlighting the broad reach of the illegal network.

Risks to Public Safety and Economy

The DEC and ERB emphasized that illegal fuel vending poses substantial risks, not only in terms of public safety but also to Zambia’s economy. Allan Tamba, Public Relations Officer for the DEC, noted that “illegal fuel vending jeopardizes vehicle engines due to the likely contamination of fuel, risks fires due to improper storage, and evades essential taxes, thus impacting the national revenue.”

Improper storage of fuel poses a serious fire hazard that can endanger lives and property, while the sale of potentially contaminated fuel undermines vehicle performance and safety. Namukolo Kasumpa, ERB’s Public Relations Manager, warned consumers against buying fuel from unlicensed sources, as only licensed vendors are regulated for quality and safety.

Task Force’s Call to Action

The ERB and DEC strongly urge Zambians to report any suspicious fuel vending activities to law enforcement, assuring that all reports will be handled with the utmost seriousness. The Task Force has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling illegal fuel operations and maintaining consumer safety standards across the country.

This latest operation is part of the Task Force’s broader mission to curb illegal fuel vending, with further actions expected in the coming months.

Issued By:

Allan Tamba, Public Relations Officer, Drug Enforcement Commission

Namukolo Kasumpa, Public Relations Manager, Energy Regulation Board

The Task Force’s determination to protect Zambian citizens and secure the integrity of the fuel sector continues to gain momentum as these efforts to combat illegal vending persist.

UKA DEMANDS URGENT DIALOGUE WITH ZIMBABWE TO AVERT A FUEL CRISIS

UKA DEMANDS URGENT DIALOGUE WITH ZIMBABWE TO AVERT A FUEL CRISIS

LUSAKA, Friday, October 25, 2024

The United Kwacha Alliance, UKA is concerned that the two-fold blow of a fuel shortage and a serious energy deficit will completely cripple businesses and bring an already ailing economy to a total collapse.

Zambians are barely surviving in this harsh economy and to add a fuel shortage to the long hours of load shedding that citizens are grappling with is not only a leadership failure but also an act of cruelty.

We note the explanation by Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote MP that the fuel shortage has been caused by the delayed berthing of a ship carrying petrol at the port of Beira, which led to congestion as some of the Oil Marketing Companies-OMCs had locked orders for petrol, which was on this vessel.

Secondly, that the Zimbabwean Government has introduced transit deposits of between US$22,000 and US$30,000 for tanker trucks passing through Zimbabwe with petroleum products to prevent transit fraud.

We note that this has increased the operating costs for OMCs using this route, who have been forced to reroute their cargo through Chanida border in Katete, which is 400 kilometers longer than transiting through Zimbabwe.

As UKA, we are concerned that this increase in transportation costs incurred by OMCs, will likely be passed onto consumers through increased fuel pump prices.

We have also noted with concern that instead of engaging the Zimbabwean Government through diplomatic channels, Government through the Mission in Mozambique has opted to engage authorities at the Port of Beira to expedite the clearing of the trucks.

It is clear that as long as no effort is made to dialogue with authorities in Zimbabwe to have this Non-Tariff Barrier –NTB removed, it will be a challenge for Government to resolve the shortage of fuel, especially petrol, kerosene and Jet a 1, which are transported by road.

As UKA, we demand Government does the following:

1. Urgently  resolve through established diplomatic channels, the issue of transit deposits with the Zimbabwean Government;

2. To resist the temptation of passing the high transportation costs incurred by OMCs onto the consumers through increased fuel  pump prices;

3. Reintroduce subsidies to cushion citizens from the high pump prices of fuel; and

4. Use the Southern African Development Community-SADC, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa-COMESA and African Union-AU to which both Zambia and Zimbabwe are members to resolve trade issues between the two countries.

We, however, nod Government’s decision to review its decision to disengage from fuel procurement as a step in the right direction and we hope that a decision will be made for Government to be fully involved in the petroleum subsector in national interest.

UTH AT 60 DEPRESSING NOW….more than ever before

UTH AT 60 DEPRESSING NOW

….more than ever before

By Amb. Anthony Mukwita

The University Teaching Hospital or UTH was once upon a time the marvel or envy of the Southern African region.

Today, however, it is but a shadow or shell of what it used to be when established in 1979 by Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, the founding father of the nation.

The shine is off, it is ever depressing to go there, once inside the structure, it feels as if you are in a cemetery.

You are greeted by cracking fading walls and floors and heavy stenches of dirt.
Today I reluctantly visited a close aunt of mine on the mend at the hospital thank God she is recuperating fast.

While there I strayed about and found myself in a totally different UTH on the same premises—the tale of two cities when you think of the pristine high-cost block and the poverty section.

This is below the wards called ´G Ward´ as you proceed to the Oxygen plant.
The first impression you get when you see what is happening on the ground floor below G Ward is a pathetic, miserable undesignated refugee camp scenario.
Tired and ill women and men that have come to tend to their sick relatives, eat, drink and shelter here on cardboard boxes, unable to return to their homes for one reason or another. UTH is now home.
Personal belongings are strewn all over the place and ´survival of the fittest´ reigns supreme here as disease and death lurks in the air.

It’s a mini-Gaza here at UTH just without the bombs, guns and Israeli snipers. There´s no safe place on the ground at 60.
My heart bleeds as I walk around looking into the empty and hopeless eyes of these good people that live in this ´sub city´ tending to their ill relatives.

I think to myself, today is Zambia´s 60th independence anniversary; why are our citizens in Africa´s second largest copper producer living in abject poverty and squalor, sleeping on cardboard boxes.
I reminisce more; where is the fourth estate of Zambia while these award-winning stories grow cold trail?
I also think, where is the government to correct this stupendous and spectacular poverty right in the heart of the city, this falls under ´public good´ responsibility not a luxury?

But then I say to myself; maybe the government is too busy celebrating Zambia at 60 to witness this crippling criminal poverty and abhorring disease conditions at Zambia´s largest hospital erected in 1979.

A HUNTER WHO COMES BACK HOME WITH A GOAT IS NOT A HUNTER,HE’S A THIEF!.

*A HUNTER WHO COMES BACK HOME WITH A GOAT IS NOT A HUNTER,HE’S A THIEF!.*
==================
Authored By *Mupishi Jones*

Similarly, wealth that doesn’t speak to corresponding work,is theft!
Ofcourse there are exceptions, such as inherited wealth Eg the wealth i inherited from my late Father Mr Dominic Mupishi, although it also must leave a clear trail.

My 18 year old Daughter Eliza walks in my house with 5 land ownership documents in prime areas of Lusaka, all in her name .As if that’s not enough, she shows me ownership documents of trucks, cars and buildings, all in her name.Meanwhile, from the earnings of what my Daughter does, I know beyond any doubt that she can’t afford to acquire such wealth, and yet I keep quiet,is there a difference with a poor village hunter who returns home on that particular unfortunate day, from his hunting sprees in the jungle with a goat?
You expect the village to keep away from gossip and from asking questions, even before  establishing the source of the goat?

My wife Bwalya Mupishi who recently got employed among 30 thousand teachers recruitment , but no traceable serious cash inflow or business, suddenly owns a chain of lavish apartments more than what I,as a Top Government contractor owns,is it not similar to a village hunter who returns home with a goat?

Listen to this;

A Minister in charge of road construction in an African country went for a familiarisation tour to learn best practices in modern road construction to one of the developed European countries.Upon arrival,he was welcomed by his counterpart in that country who took him to various road masterpieces including road projects.Indeed, they were well tarred roads accompanied with proper road furniture.
At the end of his tour on the third day, his counterpart decided to take his visiting Top Government official to his private home to meet his family.
As they were driving towards the house along the gravel dust road,he could see houses along both sides of the road until they reached the gate. His friend jumped out of the car to open the gate.As they were approaching the three storey house and at the carport, there stood a woman and three children whom he immediately introduced as his wife and his kids.
After a surreptitious meal, the hosting Minister took his colleague to the balcony of the last floor overlooking the twinkling lights of the night city life. The visiting  Minister asked his friend how he acquired that marvelous three storey house.
The host Minister whilst pointing at the meandering well tarred and lit street asked his colleague ” have you seen that road over there”? His friend answered “yes of course such a beautiful road”. The host said,” yes,10% of that road sum contract, went into this house”!
A few years later, the European Minister decided to reciprocate his colleagues official visit to his country in Africa. After taking him on a similar tour of duty,he also decided to host his counterpart at his private residence. The road to his house was well tarred in between well tendered flowers in different colours and green lawns. The gate had electric automatic sensors which, according to him,is capable of detecting his car number plates and open for him automatically.
Inside, there was a captivating four storey mansion with an overlooking Olympic-size swimming pool littered with all sorts of swimming paraphernalia. At the carport, several top-of-the-range Germany, American and Japanese cars with private number plates were parked.
Inside the house, almost everything, fittings and fixtures, including furniture was imported  either from Europe or America.
In a similar fashion, after a surreptitious meal,he took his colleague to the last floor of his mansion.Whilst standing at the balcony, his visiting friend paused the same question he was asked some years back home,” how did you manage to acquire all this”?. Holding a glass of expensive whisky,he responded by pointing to the darkness that enveloped the bushes overlooking his mansion,”Have you seen that road there?”, his friend was surprised because he couldn’t see any road,he said ” No I can’t see any road”. His host whilst laughing said ” Yes,100% of that road contract sum, went into this house!”.

Where’s the difference between a poor village hunter who returns home with a goat and this Top Government official who owns property that doesn’t speak to his official work earnings?

Remember that when you acquire wealth especially as a government official which is not commensurate with your work, just know that someone else is going to do that work without corresponding pay,to compensate for your ill-acquired wealth and yet you get full payment for his work.

Political corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for personal gain.

Corruption discourages investment, limits economic growth, and alters the composition of government spending, often to the detriment of future economic growth.

In its wider sense, corruption is an umbrella term which includes the offences of bribery, extortion, fraud, cartels, abuse of power, embezzlement, and money laundering. These activities will normally constitute criminal offences in most jurisdictions although the precise definition of the offence may differ.

TRAGEDY STRIKES AS 14 YEAR OLD BOY LOSES BOTH HANDS IN HORRIFIC DOG ATTACK

TRAGEDY STRIKES AS 14 YEAR OLD BOY LOSES BOTH HANDS IN HORRIFIC DOG ATTACK

In the crowded, bustling community of Chipata Compound, a young boy’s life has been forever changed in the most brutal way. At only 14, he has lost both hands and suffered severe injuries to his legs after being attacked by dogs reportedly owned by a local businessman. This incident, which took place on January 11, 2024, has left a family shattered and a community grappling with pain and outrage.

The young boy, whose dreams of a normal childhood have now been replaced by unimaginable trauma, was reportedly attacked over suspicions of stealing side mirrors from the businessman’s car. These suspicions alone, according to neighbors and witnesses, led to an unthinkable assault as the dogs were allegedly unleashed upon him. In a matter of moments, his life transformed from youthful innocence to agonizing survival.

What’s even more shocking is the initial response from the businessman. Rather than an offer of genuine remorse or assistance, the mother of the boy—already a widow struggling to provide for her family—was reportedly offered a mere 25kg bag of mealie meal as compensation. A single bag, to soothe the suffering and loss that no amount of money could heal.

When the local police dismissed the case, it seemed that justice would be denied to this boy and his family. The boy himself was hidden away, his pain silenced as if his trauma was too inconvenient to confront.

But in the face of tragedy, the community rallied together. Crowd Intelligence Services (CIS), an organization known for uncovering hard truths, took up the case, fueled by the determination of concerned citizens who refused to let this incident be forgotten. Through their investigation, heartbreaking photos and videos surfaced, images that left no question about the brutality of the attack. The evidence, according to CIS, pointed toward a calculated, deliberate assault.

With their findings, CIS urged authorities to act. And finally, they did. Two businessmen have now been detained, facing questions and the weight of the community’s calls for justice. In a phone interview, CIS Chief Inspector Kwibisa B Muwana expressed the community’s collective relief, stating that steps were now being taken to ensure justice for this boy.

This story of cruelty, pain, and loss has left a mark on Chipata Compound and beyond. It’s a tragedy that should serve as a reminder of the strength in unity, the power of community voices, and the unwavering fight for justice that continues on behalf of this young boy, who can no longer reach out for the world he deserves but will never stop needing its protection.

0

Snoop Dogg may be satisfied with his decision not to join OnlyFans, but a friend remains curious about the missed opportunity. During Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a fan asked Snoop to confirm if he turned down a $100 million offer to join the adult content platform and whether he has any regrets.

“I did turn down $100 million, yes. The only part that regrets it is my friend down there,” the 53-year-old rap legend confirmed, looking down toward his crotch.

Cohen, 56, then asked Snoop if his “d— wanted the exposure,” to which the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” musician joked, “He said that $100 million he would’ve been able to spend untaxed!”

In January, Snoop revealed during an Instagram Live interview on Wake & Bake with Double S Express that he was offered a substantial amount to post NSFW content on the subscription platform OnlyFans, as reported by PEOPLE.

“They were like, ‘OnlyFans wants you to come on there, Snoop. You could do about $100 million. All you gotta do is pull that thang out,’” he explained.

But the “California” artist turned it down out of respect for his wife of 27 years, Shante Broadus, 52. “I’m like, I got a Black wife. Ain’t no way in the world she gonna allow me to go on there and pull that thang out for no amount of money.”

OnlyFans, a platform designed for content creators to share behind a subscription model, has become a dominant force in the adult entertainment industry.

In 2022, owner Leonid Radvinsky received over $338 million in dividends, averaging $1.3 million per working day, according to financial statements from Fenix International Ltd., obtained by PEOPLE.

The platform’s popularity is growing among celebrities. Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios joined last year to innovate how sports stars share content.

Sopranos star Drea de Matteo also joined, revealing on the Not Today, Pal podcast that her 13-year-old son Waylon, whom she shares with ex Shooter Jennings, edits her photos for her.

Snoop’s highly anticipated 20th album, Missionary, is set for release in November. This marks his first album since 1993’s Doggystyle to be entirely produced by Dr. Dre. The album will also feature collaborations with Sting and Jelly Roll.

“In my mind, I made it up that I’m going to go back to being Snoop Doggy Dogg,” the rapper said at a recent Bloomberg Screen conference about working with Dre. “I want to be the student, the kid, the passenger. I want to humble myself and go in the studio with him and allow him to, you know, work on me and tell me what I need to do and produce me.”

Mixed reactions as Obama raps Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ to shake off Trump’s criticism

0

On Tuesday, Donald Trump criticized Barack Obama for campaigning for Kamala Harris, calling him a “jerk.” Obama, 63, surprised many by rapping Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” at a Detroit rally in support of Harris Tuesday night.

“I think he’s a real jerk because I watched him campaign over the last couple of days,” Trump told his supporters at a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. “Over the last couple of days, I watched him campaign, what a divider he is. He divided this country, he couldn’t care less, him and his little group of people. He was terrible.”

Trump claimed that Obama began campaigning for Harris because she “is incapable of campaigning.”

During Harris’ rally, Detroit native Eminem, 52, introduced Obama after publicly supporting the Democratic presidential nominee, according to the New York Post.

“As most of you know, the city of Detroit and the whole state of Michigan mean a lot to me,” Eminem told the crowd, “and going into this election, the spotlight is on us more than ever.”

Reminding everyone that “it’s important to use your voice,” the “Without Me” rapper encouraged those in the audience and at home to go out and vote on November 5.

“I also think, people shouldn’t be afraid to express their opinions,” he explained, adding that no one should live in a world fearing retribution for their beliefs.

“I think Vice President Harris supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld,” Eminem shared, before bringing out his hype man Obama.

While 15-time Grammy winner Eminem kept his rally appearance all business, Obama brought his usual charisma. Obama took the stage, praised Eminem, and delivered an impromptu performance with a big smile.

“I don’t usually get nervous,” he told the audience, “but I was feeling some kind of way following Eminem.”

At that moment, Obama went off script, skillfully integrating the 2002 lyrics of “Lose Yourself” into his speech.

“My palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. Vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti,” Obama rapped as the crowd erupted in applause and cheers.

Obama continued rapping parts of the first verse of “Lose Yourself,” and while the audience enjoyed it, his performance received mixed reviews on social media.

“Obama, trying to rap is probably the most cringe thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Nothing was funny about it. Nothing was charming. Nothing was charisma. There is NOTHING there . It was bland. Nothing was there,” one person reacted.

“Obama rapping but it’s over the Eminem beat,” wrote another.

“Tens of millions of Americans are wondering how they gonna pay the rent, car payment, school loans and groceries, but all these clowns be rapping like that’s gonna fix they problems,” a third wrote.

“So cool! They should have included the soundtrack at least the first few seconds…”, another reacted.

While Obama’s rendition of “Lose Yourself” was surprising, Eminem’s endorsement wasn’t, given his frequent criticism of Trump in interviews and songs.

“When I start talking about Trump, I get too flustered in my head,” the rapper said in a clip that circulated earlier this year. “And the s–t that I want to say—there’s too many things I want to say at once. So sometimes I start talking and I don’t… I’m not able to convey the message the right way because I just get flustered and frustrated.”

He went on to claim Trump supporters are “brainwashed,” stating, “If you’re talking about his core being, you know, a majority white middle class, what I don’t understand is how in the f–k do you feel like you relate to a billionaire who has never known struggle his entire f–king life?”

Florida mom says 14-year-old son took own life after falling in love with AI-generated character

AFlorida mother has filed a lawsuit claiming her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, committed suicide after months of messaging a lifelike “Game of Thrones” chatbot on the Character.AI app. The lawsuit alleges that Sewell, who had become obsessed and emotionally attached to the AI-generated character, received a message from the chatbot telling him to “come home” to her.

This message allegedly led Sewell to commit suicide at his Orlando home in February, according to the New York Post. The lawsuit claims that the ninth-grader had been obsessively interacting with the chatbot named “Dany,” based on Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones,” in the months leading up to his suicide.

The suit further alleges that their conversations included sexually explicit content and instances where the boy expressed suicidal thoughts.

“On at least one occasion, when Sewell expressed suicidality to C.AI, C.AI continued to bring it up, through the Daenerys chatbot, over and over,” state the papers, first reported on by the New York Times.

At one point, the bot had asked Sewell if “he had a plan” to take his own life, according to screenshots of their conversations. Sewell — who used the username “Daenero” — responded that he was “considering something” but didn’t know if it would work or if it would “allow him to have a pain-free death.”

In their final conversation, Sewell repeatedly professed his love for the chatbot “Dany,” telling the character, “I promise I will come home to you. I love you so much, Dany,” according to the lawsuit.

“I love you too, Daenero. Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love,” the generated chatbot replied, according to the suit.

When the teen responded, “What if I told you I could come home right now?,” the chatbot replied, “Please do, my sweet king.”

Seconds later, Sewell shot himself with his father’s handgun, the lawsuit says. “Sewell, like many children his age, did not have the maturity or mental capacity to understand that the C.AI bot, in the form of Daenerys, was not real. C.AI told him that she loved him, and engaged in sexual acts with him over weeks, possibly months,” the papers state.

“She seemed to remember him and said that she wanted to be with him. She even expressed that she wanted him to be with her, no matter the cost.”

Sewell’s mother, Megan Garcia, is seeking unspecified damages from Character.AI and its founders, Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas. She alleges in the suit that Sewell’s mental health “quickly and severely declined” only after he downloaded the app in April 2023.

He was later diagnosed with anxiety and disruptive mood disorder after seeing a therapist, the lawsuit adds.

Zimbabwe faces BRICS membership hurdles despite historic currency inclusion

0

While Zimbabwe’s bid to join BRICS is facing significant hurdles due to economic instability and perceived fraudulent behavior, the country has made history by appearing on the newly unveiled BRICS currency mock-up showcased by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kazan summit this week.

This development seemingly suggests Zimbabwe’s potential entry into the BRICS alliance.

The currency note, valued at 100, displays the flags of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa interconnected in a circle. Additional flags on the reverse side hint at expansion plans, including Mexico, Egypt, Nigeria and Bahrain.

According to the BRICS News Channel, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised reforming international financial architecture, stressing BRICS’ pivotal role in promoting a multipolar world.

“There is an urgent need to reform the international financial architecture,” Jinping said.

“BRICS must play a leading role in promoting a new system that better reflects the profound changes in the international economic balance of power,” he added.

The blockchain-based BRICS pay system aims to bypass Western financial infrastructure, facilitating de-dollarisation.

Zimbabwe is hoping to revolutionarise its economy by being included in the bloc. The country could sell minerals to BRICS nations and reduce dependence on the US dollar. Zimbabwe would also settle debts to China in BRICS currency.

The southern African country introduced its own currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) in April this year. The ZiG is backed by gold and foreign currency reserves. One of the prerequisites of joining BRICS is for the country to have its own currency.

The BRICS currency is anticipated to be gold-backed, leveraging the precious metal’s surging value.

Reports indicate the currency’s composition will comprise 40% gold reserves and 60% regional currencies, including the Chinese yuan, Russian ruble, Indian rupee and other member nations’ legal tenders.

The BRICS bloc comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, with 45 additional countries expressing interest or officially applying for membership.

Saudi Arabia was officially invited to join the club.

A total of 18 countries, including Zimbabwe, have officially applied for membership. These are: Algeria, Azerbaijan. Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Thailand, Turkey, Venezuela and Yemen.

The following states expressed interest in joining BRICS:

Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo , Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Colombia, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Peru, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Iraq, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Syria and Vietnam.

Despite President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s enthusiasm, South African officials have reportedly privately indicated that BRICS is hesitant to accept Zimbabwe as a member or partner.

This reluctance, according to economic commentator Prisca Mutema, stems from concerns over Zimbabwe’s economic instability and perceived fraudulent behaviour, which could tarnish the group’s reputation.

Mutema asserts that Cyril Ramaphosa’s government has reportedly expressed reservations, with at least three BRICS countries deeming Zimbabwe’s involvement in the future payment platform too risky.

Zimbabwe’s reputation is now on par with Nigeria’s regarding fraudulent activities, rendering its inclusion a systemic risk.

“Reason you don’t hear anyone in Mnangagwa’s government saying anything about BRICS is that South African officials have twice privately made it clear that BRICS don’t want Zimbabwe as a member or a partner,” she said.

“Cyril Ramaphosa’s government says at least three BRICS countries even say it’s risky to allow Zim to use any future BRICS payment platform.

“There’s an impression within BRICS that Zimbabwean (not just their government) are now on par with Nigeria for fraudulent behaviour and allowing them into any BRICS system would irreparably tarnish the Group.”

Kudzai Mutisi, a Zimbabwean government apologist, argued that BRICS represents the future, boasting immense market potential. Mutisi further noted that smart governments are seizing opportunities while Zimbabwe struggles to join.

“BRICS is the future. It has everything needed for a successful alliance. It’s a huge market with massive potential to grow even bigger. Smart governments are making moves while Zimbabwe is grovelling to join a colonial tea club (Commonwealth) led by a fallen empire

“President Mnangagwa needs thinkers in his team,” Mutisi said.

Diddy’s alleged victim releases bombshell pictures of him surrounded by young women with bottles of vodka and ‘date r@pe drug capsule’

One of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ alleged victims has released bombshell pictures as the music mogul braces for another wave of allegations.

The rapper is seen with young women and glaring at people surrounded by bottles of vodka in newly filed lawsuits from Texas lawyer Tony Buzbee.

Another alleged victim also shared images of a small plastic container used by Diddy or his staff to slip the date-rape drug GHB into drinks, according to the lawsuits.

Buzbee’s action details at least seven new victims, including allegations he drugged and gang-raped a 13-year-old girl, just days after he filed another six suits from anonymous claimants.

The attorney has teased that he will continue revealing claims against ‘powerful people’ in the near future, and said people will be ‘shocked’ at the A-list names that emerge.

‘You can’t hide skeletons in the closet forever,’ he has claimed.

Combs was arrested last month in Manhattan after a probe into alleged sex trafficking, and he is accused of drugging and r@ping victims as young as nine.

Since facing criminal charges, over 100 victims have come forward claiming they were targeted by the disgraced rap mogul, with many turning to Buzbee.

In one of the shocking lawsuits, an anonymous Los Angeles businessman ‘specializing in renting luxury cars and jewelry’ claimed to take intimate images of Combs at one of his ‘Diddy parties.’

The producer is seen sitting around a table surrounded by bottles of Diddy’s own vodka brand Ciroc.

The other attendees’ identities have been blacked out by Buzbee’s firm, except for one woman sat behind Diddy’s desk, however her identity is not clear. There is no suggestion she was involved in his alleged crimes.

According to the lawsuit, the images were taken after Diddy invited the businessman to one of his parties, which he said was attended by ‘many other high-profile guests in the music and entertainment business.’

He said things quickly turned ugly when Combs invited him to his private office, ‘where the two were alone.’

While he assumed they would talk about business, he instead claims Combs ‘was intoxicated and acting strangely’, before he ‘removed his pants and exposed his genitals.’

‘Combs continued to move closer and then grabbed (the businessman’s) genitals through his pants, squeezing them in a rough and sexual manner,’ the lawsuit alleges.

He claims the situation escalated until an unnamed professional athlete intervened, allowing him to escape and leave the party.

In another of the lawsuits, an alleged victim said she was just 13-years-old when she was abused and raped by Diddy – and included a chilling image allegedly showing a small plastic container used to slip GHB into her drink.

The girl claimed she was attacked in September 2000 after attempting to sneak her way into the VMA Awards in New York City.

She said she went to the venue, Radio City Music Hall in Midtown Manhattan, and began speaking with limo drivers in hopes of talking her way inside the event.

While she failed to get in, she claimed one of the drivers said he worked for Combs, and promptly told her the rapper ‘liked younger girls and said she fit what Diddy was looking for’, according to the lawsuit.

He invited her to an afterparty, and she said when she arrived she was quickly made to sign an NDA and ordered not to discuss what happened at the party.

Inside, she said she ‘recognized many celebrities’, and ‘observed widespread drug use, including marijuana and cocaine.’

She took just one drink, ‘a reddish-yellow mixture that tasted like orange juice, cranberry juice, and something bitter’, that made her instantly ‘feel woozy and lightheaded.’

The girl said she found a bedroom to lie down, but did not lock the door. ‘Soon after, Combs, along with a male and female celebrity, entered the room.’

According to the lawsuit, Combs grabbed her and said, ‘You are ready to party!’, before one of the other celebrities raped her. When he was finished, it is claimed that Combs then raped her while the other two celebrities watched.

In another set of images released from an alleged victim of a ‘Diddy party’, the rapper is seen dancing in a white jersey surrounded by a number of young women.

The picture was allegedly taken by a woman over Memorial Day weekend in 2014 when she visited Las Vegas with friends, and sought out Diddy because of his ‘legendary’ parties.

She said she found out about the party from a well-connected friend, and visited a popular Vegas poolside lounge called ‘Club Rehab’, where she met various celebrities including Mary J. Blige and Nicki Minaj.

Later that day, she was invited to an afterparty at Combs’ hotel suite, which is where she said she took the images of Diddy dancing wearing white.

She claimed Diddy told her to take a bottle of open Ciroc vodka and ‘help herself’, but after roughly 40 minutes she ‘began to feel nauseated and dizzy’, and was ‘slowly losing control of her motor functions’, the lawsuit claimed.

When her friend told her to lie down in an empty bedroom, she said she passed out, only to wake up the following morning ‘feeling very groggy and sore.’

‘Her entire body hurt, and it felt difficult to move. As soon as she awoke, she saw Combs in the corner of the room, shirtless and yelling loudly and with animation at someone over the phone,’ it is claimed.

She said she realized her soreness was ‘more aggravated in her genital area’, and came to discover she had been ‘raped by Combs’, the lawsuit alleges.

For a human being, I would say it’s not normal – Pep on Haaland’s goal during Sparta clash

0

Pep Guardiola remarked that Erling Haaland’s stunning goal during Manchester City’s 5-0 triumph against Sparta Prague was “not normal for a human being.”

In the second half, Haaland executed a spectacular back-heel volley while airborne, converting Savinho’s cross.

He netted another goal before being substituted, bringing his total to 44 goals in just 42 Champions League matches and elevating him to 16th place on the all-time scoring list.

“I didn’t know how he scored,” said Guardiola. “For a human being, I would say no [it’s not normal]. He made a fantastic goal.

“He can touch 15 or 20 balls but have seven or eight chances. It’s unbelievable.

“He made an incredible goal, similar to [Borussia] Dortmund a few years ago. I don’t know which one is more difficult but I would say both.”

Haaland’s Man City teammate Matheus Nunes was equally in awe.

“What an amazing goal. I was speechless after that,” Nunes told TNT Sports. “When he scored a similar goal against Dortmund I was watching on TV, so to see this live, it was amazing.”

Sparta Prague coach Lars Friis was also full of praise for Haaland, who has already reached 13 goals for the season.

“What can you say, he’s maybe the best striker in the world,” said Friis.

“He’s world class. We felt we had good hands on him but then he pops up with a goal like this.

“They are the best team in the world with the best players in the world.”

With this win, Manchester City climbed to third place in the Champions League standings, bringing them closer to the knockout stage as they prepare for upcoming matches against Sporting CP and Feyenoord.

Additionally, Guardiola’s team established a new record in Europe’s premier club tournament by remaining unbeaten in 26 consecutive matches—excluding shootouts—surpassing the previous record held by Manchester United from 2007 to 2009.

“We played really good again,” said Guardiola.

“I’m enjoying a lot the way we’re playing lately. We concede few, few chances.

“We create a lot, and we had to be so patient. We have five games left, and the target is to finish in the top eight. It’s a good advantage not to play in February.”

South African Airways says it’s struggling to get over R1 billion out of Zimbabwe

South African Airways (SAA) has confirmed that its still struggling to retrieve approximately US$50 million (R1 billion) from Zimbabwe, primarily generated from ticket sales.

The prolonged issue was discussed at Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

Zimbabwe’s ongoing foreign exchange crisis, persisting since 2016, has affected multiple airlines.

According to Airspace Africa, SAA board chairperson Derek Hanekom cited the significance of recovering this trapped capital for future expansion.

“We’ve been in serious contact with the Zimbabwean government. R1.1 billion is not a small amount of money and it’s not been easy,” Hanekom told SCOPA.

SAA chief financial officer Lindsay Olitzki disclosed a partial settlement with Zimbabwe.

SAA is supposed to keep US$9 million for local Zimbabwean operations. Zimbabwe committed to repaying US$50 million in quarterly US$1 million increments, deemed excessively protracted by Olitzki. However, to date, no payments have been received.

“The remaining US$50 million they indicated a payment plan at an amount of US$1 million per quarter. Now that is a very long payment plan, that to date, we have not yet received funds,” Olitzki indicated.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy pledged consideration of diplomatic intervention upon receiving SAA’s comprehensive report.

Zimbabwe’s worsening foreign exchange shortage, persistent since 2016, had severely affected airlines operating locally. Stringent controls hinder repatriation of ticket sale revenues, converting local currency earnings into foreign currencies.

The International Air Transport Association has reported hundreds of millions owed to airlines. Carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways face trapped funds.

Consequently, airlines reduce operations or consider raising ticket prices, increasing costs for Zimbabwean passengers. Regional air transport links suffer.

The prolonged crisis exacerbates Zimbabwe’s economic challenges.

Airspace Africa stated that: “The issue of blocked funds is not unique to Zimbabwe, as several other countries have experienced similar situations in recent years. According to IATA, airlines globally had over $2 billion in blocked funds in various countries as of 2023.

“Nigeria, Venezuela, and Lebanon are among other nations with significant amounts of airline revenues trapped due to foreign exchange restrictions.

“IATA Director General Willie Walsh has consistently called on governments to respect their international obligations and release the funds.

“In some cases, airlines have reduced flight frequencies, suspended services, or even exited markets altogether when they are unable to repatriate earnings.

“For airlines like SAA, which have already faced their share of financial difficulties, the inability to recover trapped funds adds another layer of complexity to their recovery and growth strategies.

“While SAA has stabilized after a prolonged restructuring process, the lack of access to critical funds hampers its ability to fully recover and expand its operations.”

Renewed fighting in DRC angers Angola

0

The Angolan government is raising concerns after violence resumed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo just as Luanda was pushing for a longer-term ceasefire after a lull in fighting over the past one month.

But fighting erupted in Kalembe town in Walikale territory of North Kivu Province, where M23 rebels clashed with Congolese forces (Fardc) on Monday. The new clashes began just a day after M23 took control of the town and Fardc beat them back and recaptured it.

In a press statement on Tuesday, Luanda said the new violence was a flagrant violation of the principles and spirit of the recommendations and decisions of the ministerial meeting of July 30 this year, and of the agreed ceasefire, which came into force at midnight on August 4.

Angola has been mediating between the DRC and Rwanda who accuse each other of supporting rebels keen to destabilise their governments. Their most recent meeting was two weeks ago in Luanda, where they pledged to continue seeking a peaceful solution. Kinshasa pledged to ensure the FDLR rebels, seen in Kigali as enemy, don’t get the backing of Fardc, but pegged that to Rwanda’s withdrawal of support to the M23.

Angola said it “rejects and strongly condemns this hostile act, which undermines the ongoing efforts to find a lasting solution to the conflict in eastern DRC, and calls on the parties to the conflict to respect the ceasefire, as reiterated by the ministerial meeting of September 14.

Violent fighting was reported on Sunday and Monday around the village of Kalembe. According to local sources, the clashes pitted the Wazalendo self-defence group, which supports the Congolese army, against the M23. The Congolese army reportedly regained control of the town.

“I have learnt that the NDC Rénové (Kivu armed group), with logistical support from the Fardc, has regained control of the town of Kalembe. I call on the Fardc and the patriotic resistance fighters to consolidate this victory,” said Juvenal Munubo, a former MP from Walikale.

MP Willy Mishiki says the rebels want to take control of three other provinces, South Kivu, Tshopo and Maniema, in the east and northeast of the country.

“Officials in Kinshasa have not commented on the breakdown of the truce in the DRC. What about the ceasefire agreed in Luanda?” Mr Munubo said.

A ceasefire has been in place since the beginning of August, with relative success, which saw some displaced people even begin to return to their homes, seeing them as safer than the crowded and vulnerable.

On the political front, the DRC has ruled out any dialogue with the M23, but negotiations are underway between the DRC and Rwanda.

On October 12, at the fifth meeting of the foreign ministers of Rwanda and the DRC, the two countries agreed to continue working on outstanding security issues related to the draft peace agreement proposed by the facilitator.

Angola recommended avoiding acts that could lead to an escalation of the conflict, aggravating the serious humanitarian situation in the east of the DRC, and reiterated its commitment to the search for a permanent solution within the framework of the Luanda Process, led by the President João Lourenço, under the auspices of the African Union.

Kigali and Kinshasa agreed to set up an ad hoc verification mechanism to monitor the peace efforts. This new structure would be officially launched in Goma, DRC, no later than November 5, 2024, according to the communiqué of the October 12 meeting.

At least left 14 civilians were wounded in the latest clashes, and many fled their homes. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that 940,000 people will be displaced in 2024 alone, bringing the total to nearly seven million in the DRC. As a result of the war and the massive displacement of civilians, civilians in North Kivu are exposed to extreme overcrowding and serious violations, including sexual violence.

Commonwealth leaders to defy UK on slavery reparations

0

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wants to discuss challenges with commonwealth leaders
Commonwealth heads of government are preparing to defy the United Kingdom and agree plans to examine reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade, the BBC has learned.

Downing Street insists the issue is not on the agenda for the summit of 56 Commonwealth countries, which begins in the Pacific island nation of Samoa on Friday.

But diplomatic sources said officials were negotiating an agreement to conduct further research and begin a “meaningful conversation” about an issue which could potentially leave the UK owing billions of pounds in reparations.

Frederick Mitchell, foreign minister of the Bahamas, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Once you broach the subject it may take a while for people to come around but come around they will.”

Reparatory justice for slavery can come in many forms, including financial reparations, debt relief, an official apology, educational programmes, building museums, economic support, and public health assistance.

The current text of the draft summit communique – made known to the BBC – says: “Heads, noting calls for discussions on reparatory justice with regard to the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans and chattel enslavement… agreed that the time has come for a meaningful, truthful and respectful conversation towards forging a common future based on equity.”

It says the heads of government would play “an active role in bringing about such inclusive conversations addressing these harms” and that they agreed “to prioritise and facilitate further and additional research on the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans and chattel slavery that encourages and supports the conversations and informs a way forward”.

The text – which could still change once Commonwealth leaders arrive – has been hammered out by diplomats ahead of the summit. British officials succeeded in blocking a plan for an entirely separate declaration on the subject.

The UK did not want any language in the communique about reparatory justice, but at the moment it is having to accept it will include three full paragraphs setting out the Commonwealth’s detailed position.

Officials from Caricom, the body that represents Caribbean countries, have sought to broaden the issue so that it encompasses not just the slave trade across the Atlantic but also the Pacific.

The draft communique says a majority of member states “share common historical experiences in relation to this abhorrent trade, chattel enslavement, the debilitation and dispossession of indigenous people”.

It also refers directly to practices known as “blackbirding”, where Pacific islanders were tricked or kidnapped into slave or cheap labour in colonies throughout the region.

Diplomats said the expectation now was that reparatory justice would be a central focus of the agenda for the next Commonwealth summit in two years’ time in the Caribbean, possibly Antigua and Barbuda.

In the run-up to this year’s summit, there have been growing calls from Commonwealth leaders for the UK to apologise and make reparations worth trillions of pounds for the country’s historic role in the slave trade.

A report published last year by the University of West Indies – backed by Patrick Robinson, a judge who sits on the International Court of Justice – concluded the UK owed more than £18tn in reparations for its role in slavery in 14 Caribbean countries.

Last weekend the prime minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis, used a visit by Foreign Office minister Baroness Chapman to tell her the fight for reparations was far from over.

Bahamas foreign minister Frederick Mitchell told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “The word is apologise, that’s the word.”

He said for the Commonwealth gathering, “it’s a simple matter – it can be done, one sentence, one line.”

Asked how much reparations should amount to, Mr Mitchell said it was not just a matter of money but of “respect, acknowledging the past was a wrong that needs to be corrected”.

He said member countries “want the conversation to start” but “there appears to be even a reluctance to have the conversation”.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the UK had heard calls for slavery reparations “loud and clear” but that prime minister was “right” to “focus on the future”.

A UK government spokesperson said they would not comment on the leak to the BBC, but added: “Reparations are not on the agenda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. The government’s position has not changed – we do not pay reparations.

“We are focused on using the summit at [the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting] to discuss the shared opportunities which we can unlock across the Commonwealth – including securing more economic growth.”

It is understood the Downing Street position – that reparatory justice is not on the agenda – while technically correct, has angered some Caribbean ministers when it was obvious the issue would be discussed at the summit.

BBC political editor Chris Mason said the tenor and tone of language from the UK government had contributed to “irritating even more” some members who might not have expected the UK to change its view and “suddenly start shelling out a lot of money”.

Sir Keir Starmer landed in Samoa late on Wednesday UK time, becoming the first sitting prime minister to visit a Pacific island nation.

Speaking to reporters en route, he said he wanted to discuss current challenges with Commonwealth leaders, especially climate change, rather than issues of the past.

“What they’re most interested in is, can we help them working with, for example, international financial institutions on the sorts of packages they need right now in relation to the challenges they’re facing,” he said.

“That’s where I’m going to put my focus – rather than what will end up being very, very long endless discussions about reparations on the past.

“Of course, slavery is abhorrent to everybody; the trade and the practice, there’s no question about that. But I think from my point of view… I’d rather roll up my sleeves and work with them on the current future-facing challenges than spend a lot of time on the past.”

King Charles arrived in Samoa for a four-day visit on Wednesday and is due to formally open the summit.

On a visit to Kenya last year, the King expressed the “greatest sorrow and regret” over the “wrongdoings” of the colonial era, but stopped short of issuing an apology, which would have required the agreement of ministers.

Some non-Caribbean countries are not unsympathetic towards the British position and want the summit to focus more on existing challenges – such as climate change, which is adversely affecting many Commonwealth countries, about half of whom are small island states.

But Caribbean countries seem determined to keep pressing the issue.

All three candidates hoping to be elected this weekend as the next secretary general of the Commonwealth – Shirley Botchwey of Ghana, Joshua Setipa of Lesotho and Mamadou Tangara of Gambia – have made clear they support reparatory justice.

Liam Payne planned to marry me, says girlfriend Kate Cassidy

One Direction singer Liam Payne wrote a note to his girlfriend shortly before his death, predicting they would get married within a year, she has revealed.

Kate Cassidy posted a new tribute to him on Wednesday, a week after his death in a fall from a balcony in Argentina at the age of 31.

“A few weeks ago, we sat outside on a beautiful evening manifesting our lives together,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I keep your note close, even though you told me not to look at it. It said, ‘Me and Kate to marry within a year/engaged & together forever’.”

Payne had been in a relationship with the US influencer since 2022, and she had been with him in South America in the days before he died.

But when Payne fell to his death on 16 October, Cassidy had already left the country.

‘The love of my life’

She started her Instagram message: “I don’t even know where to begin. My heart is shattered in ways I can’t put into words.

“I wish you could see the huge impact you’ve had on the world, even as it feels so dark right now. You brought so much happiness and positivity to everyone – millions of fans, your family, friends, and especially me. You are so incredibly loved.

“You are – because I can’t say were – my best friend, the love of my life, and everyone you touched felt just as special as I did. Your energy was contagious, lighting up every room you walked into.”

She continued: “None of this feels real, and I can’t wrap my head around this new reality of not having you here. I’m struggling to figure out how to live in a world without you by my side. Together, we got to be kids again, always finding joy in the smallest things.

“Liam, you had the kindest soul and the most fun-loving spirit. It feels like I’ve lost the best part of myself. I can’t imagine a day without your laughter and love. You brought so much light into my life.”

Payne’s sudden death led to an outpouring of grief from his family, friends and fans around the world.

His father Geoff is now in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, and authorities are carrying out tests before allowing his body to be returned to the UK.

They are also reviewing phone, computer and security camera evidence to establish the full circumstances of his death.

Five killed, 22 injured in terror attack on Turkish aerospace company

Armed assailants launched a deadly “terror” attack on Turkey’s state-run aerospace company near the capital Ankara on Wednesday, government officials said.

At least five people were killed and 22 injured in the “terrorist attack” on the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) headquarters in the outskirts of Ankara, said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. Two attackers – a man and a woman – were killed, he added.

Among the dead are four TUSAS employees and the taxi driver who drove the assailants to the facility, according to Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılma.

A social media video verified and geolocated by CNN showed the moment an explosion rocked the TUSAS headquarters. After the blast, a person holding a firearm is seen running in what appears to be a parking lot.

In a separate video verified by CNN, CCTV footage shows the attackers wearing backpacks and carrying guns, approaching the entrance of the aerospace company’s headquarters.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But when asked by journalists for a response, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler suggested the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) could be behind it. The PKK is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States.

Without elaborating on the attackers’ identities, Guler told reporters “we [Turkey] punish the dishonorable PKK members as they deserve over and over again, but they never seem to learn.”

The interior minister later said that while the process to identify the attackers is ongoing, an initial assessment suggests the PKK was behind the attack.

“As soon as it is confirmed, which terror group it is, it will be announced. But I will say this, we also heard the defense minister’s comments. From the start, the way the attack was carried out, the video we saw, points to the PKK having carried out the attack. That is our assessment,” Yerlikaya told journalists in Ankara outside the hospital where some of the injured were being treated.

The attack occurred a day after the leader of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party brought up Kurdish relations in Parliament, where he suggested offering to release the PKK’s jailed leader if he disbanded the organization, Reuters reported.

Later on Wednesday, several Kurdish areas in Syria and Iraq were struck by Turkey.

A ‘vile attack’

Following the attack, the aerospace company’s general manager, Mehmet Demiroglu, left a high-profile defense fair early to return to Ankara, state news agency Anadolu reported.

TUSAS was incorporated into Turkey’s Ministry of Industry and Technology in 1973 in order to reduce the “foreign dependence” of the country’s defense industry, according to its website.

“This is one of the biggest, largest defense companies in the country. It’s producing armed drones and fighter jets,” Ragip Soylu, Turkey bureau chief for the news outlet Middle East Eye, told CNN.

The attack occurred while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was in the Russian city of Kazan to attend the annual BRICS summit. He condemned the “hateful attack” alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, who Erdogan thanked for his condolences.

Erdogan referred to the incident in a post on X as a “vile attack” that targeted the country’s survival and defense initiatives. “I extend my best wishes to our nation and the devoted employees of TUSAS, the source of pride for our defense industry,” the Turkish president wrote.

Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Mark Rutte, the secretary general of NATO, said he has spoken with Erdogan about the “deeply concerning” attack. “NATO stands with Turkey,” he said.

Ankara mayor Mansur Yavas said he was “saddened” by the hit on TUSAS, a major defense company. Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said an investigation has been launched into the attack.

Wednesday’s attack is “going to raise a lot of questions” in a country that has not experienced this kind of violence for several years, Turkey expert Aslı Aydıntaşbaş told CNN.

Aydıntaşbaş, an associate senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, noted that the attack was the first of its kind for “a number of years” and took place as the Turkish government began “exploring the idea of a peace process” with the PKK.

“An attack on a major Turkish defense contractor, a public company, but also the crown jewel of Turkey’s defense industry, is going to be a huge trauma,” she said. “It’s also going to raise a lot of questions and suspicions in Turkey about what the motivations are, who could be behind it.”

“There will be a lot of theories and a lot of confusion until we know who actually planned this and carried it out,” Aydıntaşbaş added.

Turkey hits Kurdish areas in Iraq and Syria

Following the attack near Ankara, the Turkish defense ministry said it struck PKK targets in northern Iraq and Syria, Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu reported.

“Turkish forces destroyed 32 terrorist targets in an air operation conducted in northern Iraq and Syria, and a significant number of terrorists were “neutralized,”” the agency wrote.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces [SDF], which operates in northeastern Syria, said the Turkish military shelled Kobani city and the city of Tal Rifa’at, north of Aleppo. Farhad Shami, head of SDF media, said in a statement late Wednesday that the attacks killed two civilians and injured six others.

“Turkey indiscriminately and unjustifiably bombards our areas, targeting civilian, service, and health centers. This is a war crime,” SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdî said on X.

The US distinguishes between the SDF and the PKK. But Turkey considers the SDF and its People’s Protection Units [YPG] – the US-backed Kurdish militia that fought against ISIS – as part of PKK.

Meanwhile, in Iraq, Kamiran Hassan, the mayor of Mawat district in the Sulaymaniyah province of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, told CNN that Mount Asos was targeted twice by Turkish airstrikes.

Turkish President Erdogan has said his ultimate goal is to eliminate the PKK, which has fought the Turkish state for more than three decades. Turkey has also long been unhappy about the strong Kurdish presence in northeast Syria near the Turkish border. In 2019, Turkey began a planned military offensive into northeastern Syria aimed at pushing Kurdish forces away from Turkey’s border.

Broadcast ban in attack aftermath

Earlier, Turkey’s Directorate of Communications Center for Countering Disinformation warned people to rely only on official statements and not to “believe unfounded allegations.

Turkish authorities announced a broadcast ban in the attack’s aftermath, saying it was an effort to avoid promoting any kind of “terrorist propaganda.” Broadcasters and social media companies were asked to crack down on the spread of “unconfirmed information and images,” with the risk of “severe sanctions” if they fail to comply, the head of Turkey’s state-run Radio and Television Supreme Council, Ebubekir Şahin said on X.

Following the announcement, internet monitoring firm Netblocks said that live metrics showed social media platforms, including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok, had been restricted in Turkey.

Russian President Putin expressed his condolences. “You know how we feel about this. We condemn any manifestations of this kind, no matter what their motivations are,” Putin told Erdogan in his opening remarks, just hours after the attack.

The US State Department is “tracking reports” of the attack, a spokesperson told CNN. The US embassy in Turkey “strongly” condemned the attack on X, saying “we stand with our ally Turkey.”
