Despite early hopes of good rainfall, now drought is predicted!

Although La Niña conditions – associated with favorable rainfall in the southern Africa region – will become the dominant ENSO state in September-November, the long-term impacts of El Niño will persist during the October 2024-March 2025 main agricultural season.ANOTHER DROUGHT COMING?

Hopes fade for La Niña rain as drought fears increase

The dream of La Niña bringing rains to southern Africa is slipping away, with forecasts now predicting weak or neutral conditions. Millions are food insecure after El Niño’s drought, and agriculture faces another tough season

After last summer’s blistering El Niño event scorched the staple maize and other crops across southern Africa, leaving tens of millions in need of food aid, there were high hopes that La Niña would have formed by now, unleashing a season of good rains on the parched landscape.

Such hopes are increasingly becoming high and dry.

El Niño typically brings drought to southern Africa – and the last one lived up to its withering reputation – while La Niña usually opens up the heavens over the veld. But after initial expectations that the latter would form as early as July, international forecasters have been pushing the timeline out further and downscaling predictions about its strength.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology on Tuesday issued the latest and most pessimistic report yet on the fading prospects of La Niña forming in 2024, raising the spectre of another poor season for summer grain crops in southern Africa.

“… the chance of a La Niña event developing in the coming months has decreased compared to recent outlooks,” the bureau said in a bi-weekly outlook report.

Warmer summer, less rain
“If a La Niña were to develop, it is likely to be relatively weak and short-lived, with all models forecasting neutral values by February.”

This global weather dance is known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (Enso) and it is currently in its neutral phase.

So, what the Aussies are saying is that if La Niña does form, it won’t shoot the lights out and it will be all over by February.

Other global forecasters have also been whittling down La Niña expectations.

A US government forecaster said last week it had “… lowered the chances of La Niña” and said if it did form it was expected to persist until March.

La Niña is triggered by a cooling of surface temperatures in the tropical regions of the eastern Pacific, while a warming of those waters gives rise to El Niño.

A weak La Niña or a summer in the neutral zone does not necessarily mean that this region will suffer another drought.

The current long-range forecast from the South African Weather Service is for wet conditions over the interior of the country in the early and mid-summer season, while the outlook for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and northern KZN is worryingly dry.

But across the length and breadth of the land, the summer is seen to be warmer than usual, and the rains of La Niña would be most welcome in South Africa and neighbouring countries after the path of misery blazed by El Niño.

Food insecurity escalates
The UN World Food Programme estimates that 27 million people in the region are food insecure across seven countries, but says the region is struggling to get on the radar screen of donors, Bloomberg reported last week.

In August, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (Fews Net) said hunger and the need for food had reached unprecedented levels in southern Africa in El Niño’s wake. It estimated that more than 30 million people, mostly in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, would be in need of food aid up until March 2025.

South Africa is in better shape, but its commercial farmers have also felt the pain with negative implications for food inflation.

In its latest forecast, the Crop Estimates Committee revised its forecast for South Africa’s 2023/24 maize crop down by 2% from its previous outlook. The domestic maize harvest is now seen as 22% lower than the previous season’s bumper crop.

South Africa still has enough maize for its own consumption and estimates suggest it could export around 1.9 million tonnes in the 2024-25 marketing year. However, the regional need is huge.

Average rainfall this summer would still be a help, but a drencher is needed to restore moisture and dam levels against the backdrop of expected above-normal temperatures.

Forecasts of a strong La Niña a few months ago were promising, but that it seems has now proven to have been a mirage.

………………………………Food assistance needs across countries regularly monitored by FEWS NET in southern Africa1 are expected to exceed 30 million people during the October 2024-March 2025 lean season, driven by the 2023/24 El Niño drought across much of the region and conflict in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mozambique. In FEWS NET’s drought-affected countries (excluding the DRC), needs are assessed to be 50 percent higher than the 2023/24 lean season and higher than was estimated during the peak of the last strong El Niño in 2016/17.2 Since November 2023, FEWS NET has warned that the strong El Niño event in 2023/24 would most likely result in drought-induced, below-average 2024 harvests across much of southern Africa, including in two of the region’s key suppliers, South Africa and Zambia. Indeed, a historic dry spell and above-average temperatures in early 2024 led to well below-average maize harvests across the region (Figure 1), ranging from a 10 percent deficit in South Africa to a 60 percent deficit in Zimbabwe compared to their respective five-year averages, according to national government and FEWS NET estimates. As of August, many poor households in the region have either nearly or completely exhausted their stocks from the 2024 harvest and are increasingly resorting to unsustainable coping strategies or experiencing food consumption gaps. Most of Zimbabwe, southern Malawi, southern and central Mozambique, southern Angola, and conflict-affected areas of the DRC are of highest concern. Governments, donors, humanitarian partners, and other stakeholders should rapidly mobilize now to respond to high food assistance needs through early 2025.

IMF, World Bank pressurising govt to sell off parastatals including Zesco – Ng’uni

By Fanny Kalonda

THE IMF, World Bank and our so-called development partners are bent on strangling Zambia economically, says former deputy finance minister Newton Ng’uni.

He explained that this is by punishing the country for participating directly in the economy through running parastatals.

“The IMF and the World Bank has been pressurising Zambia’s government to sell off parastatals including Zesco since the 1980s. They forced Zambia through the fastest privatisation programme ever known to man in the 1990s. Even now the pressure is on. Thanks to president MC (Michael Chilufya) Sata for reviving a holding parastatal, the IDC, at least we have some semblance of a parastatal sector,” N’guni said. “And yet the British government can own companies but the Zambian government cannot! During the 2007 to 2009 financial crisis, the British government, the USA government and many more developed countries had the sheer audacity to provide massive stimulus packages in billions to their parastatals as well as to private companies to cover losses and revive their economies. Most, if not all, that money was borrowed from the market through the sale of bonds or just printed by their central banks!”

He said a successful parastatal subsector “will challenge their business interests directly while private companies are easier to use to syphon wealth from the country”.

“But in Zambia the IMF and the World Bank in cahoot with developed countries, our so-called development partners, are bent on strangling Zambia economically by punishing her for participating directly in the economy through running parastatals. Since they run parastatals themselves which make losses at times just like ours and if the issue is loss-making, why don’t they just provide technical support to our country to help us run those parastatals profitably since they are quick to provide such support in other sectors? So the issue is not loss making but securing their economic and other interests through self-serving international political economy. A successful parastatal subsector will challenge their business interests directly while private companies are easier to use to syphon wealth from our country through transfer pricing, tax evasion tax avoidance (knowing that they will not be caught) or simply banking money in tax havens they control,” wrote Ng’uni on his Facebook page. “British International Investment (BII), the British parastatal, has taken over ZAMBEEF through debt-for-equity swap and now owns 58 per cent of the Zambian company. The Zambian government chose to spend almost $14 million through IDC to acquire Zambeef’s Chiawa Farm instead of acquiring equity. BII now has its sights on offering 20 per cent to 40 per cent premium (over the current market price of shares of £0.054 per share). At the suggested premium, BII would pay about $20 million to acquire an asset worth $165 million. The Zambian government through IDC was to spend about $14m to acquire one asset of Zambeef, a price just $6m short of what the British Govt through BII may pay to acquire the entire company. Kwena uwatulowa mukali, tabanaluse cacine. Surely, the Minister of Finance has been borrowing billions on our behalf he couldn’t find $20m or even $50m to acquire Zambeef, a prime asset with sprawling land in Mpongwe, Chisamba and elsewhere? He couldn’t even link that amount to premium on sale of mines (Konkola Copper Mines, Mopani Copper Mines)? Doesn’t he know that selling just 10,000 hectares of the 40,000 hectares of the Mpongwe Farm to civil servants and miners would raise enough money for us not only repay the money borrowed to acquire Zambeef shares but leave enough money to invest in power generation, funding Lusaka- Ndola dual Carriageway, complete King Lewanika University in Mongu and other such capital projects? Surely, surely what is wrong with us?”

HICHILEMA UNGRATEFUL AND TARGETS HIS VICTIMS

The arrest of a media consultant and journalist Thomas Allan Zgambo by Police must be condemned. Mr Zgambo hasn’t been arrested once or twice but thrice in a row. Clearly Mr Zgambo is a marked man under this failed administration.

We think that the continuing holding of Mr Zgambo indefinitely is illegal and seriously breaches his human rights.

It is an established fact that Mr Hichilema targets the very people who have at one time helped him win the Presidency.

The list of those who have assisted Hichilema at one time and are now victims is endless.

This is not how you thank the people who have helped you at one time by throwing them in filthy dungeons called police cells.

Be mindful of the fact that those mercenaries called praise singers ( who risked nothing for you will disappear soon) who today you are busy pampering will certainly desert you once you lose power in 2026.

In a nutshell we demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Zgambo.

Court detains Lusaka man for sexually starving pregnant ‘wife’

Court detains Lusaka man for sexually starving pregnant ‘wife’

THE Matero Local court yesterday detained a 50-year-old man of Lusaka’s Barlastone area after he starved his nine months heavily pregnant wife without food for three months just to punish her.

But Jethro Bulongo’s punishment did not just end at starving her stomach, he also ensured that her tunnel of happiness saw no moisture at a time when she needed it to be moisturized the most.

This was revealed in a matter in which Bulongo was sued by his illegal wife, Christine Kabaso aged 42 for pregnancy maintenance in the Matero Local court.

Kabaso told the court that she had been dating Bulongo for two years, until he finally decided to put his baby making cells race each other in the ‘fertilise her egg competition’, of which, one of them won, putting Kabaso in a family way.

But despite accepting the pregnancy, he only took her into his house when she was six months gone – but it was not for her to rest like every woman in her state deserves to, it was rather for her to be punished.

She said Bulongo had also impregnated another woman who he also brought in his house and told the two that Kabaso is his first wife, and the other pregnant woman is his second.

“But then, he doesn’t care for me. He doesn’t feed me or support the unborn child with anything that is needed. All his attention is with his younger wife who he even buys food for. He told our neighbors that he wants to punish me. But now, I am unable to even do my business in town because my pregnancy is heavy and I’m delivering next month,” he said.

She added that on top of denying her food to the extent that her neighbours have to feed her, what hurt her the most was that Bulongo also denied her his tool of happiness, instead she goes to sleep mourning while she hears her fellow wife moaning.

When put on his defence, Bulongo who called himself a ‘Tonga bull’ with two wives admitted denying his heavily pregnant ‘wife’ food and bedroom happiness.

But, he said this was only because his business of chicken rearing did not go well in the previous months, promising to start supporting her this monthend.

However, unfortunately for him, Magistrate Harriet Mulenga was not ready to listen to his tortoise- climbed- a-mountain story, as she ordered that he spends a night at Matero Police station to reboot his brain a little before the court could pass a judgment.

“How do you treat a woman that is carrying your own pregnancy like that? Do you know the pain she is currently going through at nine months? The court will adjourn this matter to tomorrow (today) for submission and judgment, meanwhile, let the defendant be remanded in custody,” said Magistrate Mulenga.

IT IS CLEAR THAT VEDANTA IS A WRONG INVESTOR TO OPERATE KCM

….. Human Rights Activist saddened by continued accidents at KCM

Kitwe… Tuesday October 22, 2024

A Human Rights Activist Evans Chota has charged that it is clear that Vedanta Resources is a wrong investor to operate Konkola Copper Mine.

Mr Chota says Zambians should not be surprised with the recent recording of deaths at KCM due to mining accidents because Vedanta has a history of poor mining practices which includes environmental degradation, lack of investment in safety measures among KCM employees.

He said the two recently mining accidents reported in the media that where recorded at KCM underscored the need for stakeholders like the mining unions, Ministry of Labor and other stakeholders to strictly monitor Vedanta operations at KCM.

“Zambians should remember that before Vedanta took over the operations of Konkola Copper Mine, we didn’t hear such accidents happening at KCM resulting into deaths of some employees. The Government through the ministry of Mines and Minerals Development and the Ministry of Labor should assess if Vedanta Resources has invested into safety mechanism at KCM to ensure the safety of the employees otherwise these accidents being recorded at KCM are now worrying especially that KCM is now under the management of the investor who has a bad historical record of poor mining practices. An investor who lost social contract with the people of Copperbelt,” he said.

“Another critical issue is that Vedanta Resources may be a hindrance to Government’s intention to achieve the 3 million metric tonnes copper production by 2031 if it has not yet injected the required capital into KCM. Remember that Vedanta Resources committed to inject US$1 billion into KCM for mining development and operations, however reports reaching us is that Vedanta Resources has not started injecting this proposed capital. It is  clear that Vedanta Resources is financially incapacitated to run KCM. Just like  Honourable Chilundika Nchanga Member of Parliament and other many Zambians observed and warned about Vedanta not being a good Investor, it’s  absolutely clear that we have a bad investor as our partner at KCM.”

Mr Chota was of the strong view that Members of Parliament should engage the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon. Paul Kabuswe to update the nation on current recapitalization status of KCM by the financial troubled investor Vedanta.

“While we fully recognize and hold in high esteem the vision and commitment by our Republican President Hakainde Hichilema to increase productivity in the mining sector towards achieving the 3 million metric tonnes copper production target, it is prudent that Government engages with well financially sound investors as equity partners to run mining assets like KCM,” he concluded.

Lionel Messi becomes Inter Miami’s all-time leading goal scorer after 11-minute hat-trick helps team to record point total

0

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami made Major League Soccer (MLS) history on Saturday night as they eased past the New England Revolution 6-2 on the final day of regular season action.

Miami staged an incredible comeback after going two goals behind in the first half, scoring six unanswered to delight the home fans at Chase Stadium.

Messi came on as a substitute in the second half and stole the show with a rapid-fire hat-trick, netting three goals between the 78th and 89th minute. This made the 37-year-old the all-time leading goal scorer in the club’s short history – his 33 goals take him past teammate Leonardo Campana’s current total of 32, according to the team.

The win – the squad’s 22nd of the season – pushed Miami’s point total to 74, breaking the MLS record of 73 set by the Revolution in 2021, per the club.

“For the team, it’s a boost of confidence, more confidence,” said head coach Gerardo Martino postgame, via Inter Miami. “As we said before, these 74 points weren’t something planned or a goal we had when the season started, but as it became within reach, we tried to achieve it, and today, we were able to do so.

“The truth is, it’s a victory for all of us who make up the Inter Miami family. It’s hard to make this an individual achievement; I think it’s the triumph of everyone.”

Miami had already secured the league earlier this month, winning the Supporters’ Shield – awarded to the team that tops the MLS standings – for the first time and celebrated with the trophy postgame.

Based on the team’s league success, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced postgame that Miami had earned a spot in the revamped Club World Cup competition in 2025, which is being hosted by the US.

New England entered the game as the 14th seed in the Eastern Conference and already eliminated from postseason contention, but it looked like it was on its way to a significant upset when Luca Langoni and Dylan Borrero gave the Revs a two-goal lead in the first half.

Messi’s former Barça teammate Luis Suárez cut the lead in half with a left-footed strike on the 40-minute mark, before the Uruguayan leveled things up two minutes later with his second of the game and 20th of the season.

The introduction of the Argentinean heavily tipped the scales in Miami’s favor, with the superstar forward involved in the goal that gave the home side the lead. He linked up well with left-back Jordi Alba – another former Blaugrana teammate – who picked out youngster Benjamin Cremaschi in the box to make it 3-2.

From here on out, it was the Messi show. His first goal came after a powerful strike from outside of the box, before adding his second with a close-range finish two minutes later.

Another excellent team goal, assisted by Suárez, gave Messi his hat-trick to cap off the scoring frenzy.

Miami will take on the winner of the Eastern Conference Wild Card match between CF Montréal and Atlanta United on Friday in Game 1 of a best-of-three series, as it seeks a first MLS Cup title in club history.

Ancelotti Demands More Goals From Mbappe

0

Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti has urged Kylian Mbappe to focus on scoring goals for the club instead of pressing to help the team.

The defending champions will take on Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday in a repeat of last season’s Champions League final.

The Spanish and European champions have not been at their peak this season and are still looking for the best way to incorporate Mbappe into the team alongside their other superstars

Ancelotti is demanding more goals from their latest high profile signing, who joined the club on a free transfer in the summer from PSG.

He said: “I prefer that (Mbappe) scores goals than he presses.

“The central striker position in our team has not changed, I ask him the same I asked of Karim (Benzema, who left in 2023).

“To be well positioned and to be ready every time we get the ball back to make a rapid transition.”

Mbappe has scored eight goals for Madrid in 12 games across all competitions this season.

Due to Mbappe’s arrival, Bellingham has taken up a more defensive role to accommodate him and the other attacking stars at the club.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder is yet to score for the club this season in nine games, after netting 10 in his first 10 appearances last year.

Ancelotti revealed that he is satisfied with Bellingham’s performance despite his goal drought this season.

He said “We’re satisfied with his work because he works a lot on the pitch, he’s always there, he competes, fights, sacrifices himself.

“The truth is he hasn’t scored the goals he did last year, but the surprise isn’t this year, it’s last year, he scored a heap of goals that no-one expected.

“We’ve always scored goals and we’ll always score goals, we have players with great attacking talent up front. So, for us at this moment, the work he is doing is much more important for us.

“I want (rock and roll football) because I have players with these characteristics.

“We find it harder to play a game based on possession and control because we don’t have players with characteristics to play in reduced spaces.

“A back and forth game suits us well, but we’re focussed on defending better as we did very well last year.”

Real Madrid are currently unbeaten in the Spanish Liga and they trail table-toppers, Barcelona by three points ahead of the El Classico on Saturday.

Zimbabweans slam US Embassy for downplaying impact of sanctions

0

Zimbabweans and international supporters have expressed outrage over the US Embassy’s recent claims regarding the effects of sanctions on the country, demanding that the “illegal coercive measures” be lifted entirely. The controversy erupted when the US Embassy stated on its website that only 11 individuals out of Zimbabwe’s 16 million population are under sanctions, implying that the measures do not impact ordinary citizens.

Critics swiftly countered this assertion, pointing out that the sanctioned individuals, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, occupy strategic positions that influence Zimbabwe’s entire economy, indirectly affecting millions of people.

On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), users voiced their displeasure. Commenting on the embassy’s post, @KudzaiMutisi wrote, “You have no right to impose sanctions on people who are not your citizens… more so without any trial. Where were they tried and convicted?”

Another user, @Douglas Dizoni, posted a picture of fire engines destined for Zimbabwe but confiscated by Lithuania last year while en route from Belarus, which is under European Union sanctions. “You should stop playing with our minds. You know very well you have sabotaged the Zimbabwean economy, hoping it leads to an uprise. It will not work,” Dizoni wrote.

Public relations specialist @Vlada Galan highlighted the broader economic impact, noting that Zimbabwe has lost over US$42 billion in revenue over the past 19 years due to sanctions. This includes lost bilateral donor support estimated at US$4.5 billion annually since 2001, US$12 billion in loans from international financial institutions, commercial loans of US$18 billion, and a GDP reduction of US$21 billion.

Others, like @Sinclair Skinner, called for an end to what they described as economic espionage, accusing the US government of destabilizing Zimbabwe for regime change. “The US Govt has been engaged in unilateral crimes against humanity in destabilising Zimbabwe’s economy for regime change. Lift all sanctions now!” Skinner posted.

Meanwhile, @Honorebel One argued that sanctions are part of the US strategy to control resources and punish nations asserting their sovereignty, calling for greater accountability from the international community: “The US uses sanctions to control resources, strategic locations, and punish nations asserting sovereignty. But who holds the US accountable?”

The debate over sanctions in Zimbabwe remains a contentious issue, with the US insisting that its measures target specific individuals and entities involved in corruption and human rights abuses, while critics argue that the sanctions have widespread repercussions, crippling the country’s economic recovery. The growing chorus of voices demanding their removal highlights the deep frustrations felt by many Zimbabweans and their supporters globally.

reason why Liam Payne’s record label quietly dropped him before his tragic de@th

0

British singer, Liam Payne was quietly dropped by his record label because they feared the music he wanted to make wouldn’t win over his One Direction fanbase, sources have claimed.

The late singer, who died aged 31 on Wednesday after falling from a third floor of a hotel in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires, was sacked by Universal Music who put his second album on hold before dropping him.

And now, insiders have claimed that the industry bigwigs cut ties with Payne in part because of the type of music he loved making.

Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, they said: ‘Liam wanted to make the sort of music he enjoyed but his label believed it wouldn’t win over 1D fans so there were disagreements about the way his brand should have been marketed.’

The insider also alleged that the executives were having to make budget cuts, and the former One Direction star’s bad press ultimately helped to determine his fate.

It is claimed the label ties with Payne partly because of ‘all the memes and jokes people made about him online’.

‘The entire music industry is making cuts and restructuring to cut costs so Universal decided to drop Liam quietly and invest in other artists,’ the source said.

‘He didn’t need the money because he was wealthy, but yes it did hurt him because he was under constant pressure to compete with the other guys in the band.’

The source added: ‘Unfortunately, part of the decision was motivated by all of the memes and jokes people made about him online.

‘His team saw that as a sign to jump ship.’

The Universal Music Group paid tribute to Payne on Thursday morning on social media.

Their statement read: ‘We are devastated by the tragic passing of Liam Payne.

‘His legacy will live on through his music and the countless fans he inspired and who adored him.

‘We send our deepest condolences to Liam’s family and loved ones.’

On top of being dropped by his label, Payne’s PR also resigned earlier this month, which left him without any publicity representation.

The resignation came as his ex-fiancé Maya Henry began legal proceedings against him after accusing him of repeatedly contacting her.

One source said: ‘It is like all of Liam’s music career that he had built up since he went solo eight years ago was crumbling, there was very little left for him.

‘It must have absolutely devastated him.’

Diddy is facing new s3xual assault lawsuits, including allegations he drugged and r@ped a 13-year-old girl.

0

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is facing new s3xual assault lawsuits, including allegations he drugged and r@ped a 13-year-old girl.

Texas lawyer Tony Buzbee announced the seven new claims on Sunday night, days after he filed the first six lawsuits by anonymous claimants last Monday. More than 100 other potential victims have come forward.

Combs was arrested last month in Manhattan after a probe into alleged sex trafficking, and he is accused of drugging and raping victims as young as nine.

Two of the new alleged victims were teenagers at the time they claim the disgraced rapper and music mogul abused them, one 17 and a girl who was just 13.

Diddy is accused of aggravated sexual assault, sexual abuse, and sexual exploitation in the seven lawsuits by four male and three female plaintiffs.

The music mogul is also accused of drugging the 13-year-old girl in 2000, raping a man in 2022, and the sexual assault of a woman in 2022.

The lawsuits are expected to be filed in the US District Court in Manhattan overnight, and their contents made public soon after.

‘Several other individuals are referenced in the case filings but are not at this time formerly named as defendants,’ Buzbee said, without naming them.

‘We will let the allegations in the filed complaints speak for themselves, and will work to see that justice is done.’

‘The egregious conduct set out in the lawsuits occurred in New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas,’ he said.

All the plaintiffs will be anonymous, like the first six whose lawsuits were filed last week.”

Buzbee warned Diddy could expect a deluge of lawsuits that would not stop any time soon – and others should also be worried.

‘We expect to be filing cases weekly naming Mr Combs and others as defendants as we continue to gather evidence and prepare the filings,’ he said.

The lawyer said last week that a hotline he set up for victims and witnesses of Diddy and his associates had 12,000 calls in 24 hours.

His team gathered enough evidence to file 120 victims’ lawsuits against the rapper, and announced them at a press conference three weeks ago.

Of the 120 alleged victims, 25 were underage at the time of the abuse, the youngest being 9, 14, 15.

‘This individual, who was nine years old at the time, was taken to an audition in New York City with Bad Boy Records,’ he said at the press conference.

‘This individual was sexually abused allegedly by Sean Combs and several other people at the studio in the promise to both his parents and to him himself of getting a record deal.’

The claims are coming from victims who were seeking TV or music careers and the rapper promised to make them a star, as well as, those who were simply invited to Diddy’s afterparties, Buzbee said.

Liam Payne had Cocaine, Crack, and other drugs in his system when he died- Autopsy reveals

0

Liam Payne’s toxicology test results showed that the former One Direction singer had a cocktail of drugs in his system at the time of his tragic death.

A partial autopsy found that Payne had substances including cocaine, crack, and benzodiazepine, which is a type of depressant, in his body when he fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Oct. 16, sources told ABC News Monday.

The test also found “pink cocaine,” a recreational drug that typically mixes methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA, and others, per the outlet.

Additionally, an improvised aluminum pipe used to ingest the drugs was found in Payne’s hotel room, the sources said.

The pop star’s body will remain in Argentina until the full autopsy is complete.

Payne tragically died last week after falling from the third-story balcony of his room at CasaSur Palermo Hotel. He was 31.

Local authorities previously told TMZ they believed Payne had been high on “cristal,” a substance that “causes users to experience extreme highs and extreme lows, often making them aggressive.”

A preliminary autopsy report showed that the former boy bander suffered multiple traumas when he fell that led to internal and external bleeding.

Emergency doctor Alberto Crescenti, meanwhile, shared that Payne suffered a cranial fracture and “extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death.”

He was unable to be revived by first responders.

Following his death, Page Six confirmed alcohol and controlled substances had been found in his room, which was completely trashed.

Multiple eyewitnesses have said Payne exhibited “disturbing” behavior in the hotel’s lobby moments before his untimely death.

Payne, who admitted to struggling with addiction and mental health issues during his time in One Direction, had been traveling in Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, just days before he checked into the hotel solo.

Cassidy, 25, mourned her boyfriend’s loss with a touching statement on her Instagram last Friday.

,“Liam, my angel. You are everything. I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you Liam,” she wrote.

Payne’s former bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik also paid tribute to him in a rare joint message.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” the “What Makes You Beautiful” singers said in a statement. “For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

Attack on ECL was bad – KAZALA

21.10.24

Hon. Richard Kazala, the former Nchanga lawmaker has described as deplorable and unfortunate, attacks on sixth President of Zambia Edgar Lungu in Chingola by violent UPND cadres over the weekend.

Kazala adds that he ´knows the identity´ of the Lungu assailants and has since called for their arrest in order to restore sanity in Chingola and send a clear message against violence of all form and manner.

“The former President Edgar Lungu´s entourage was blocked by UPND cadres and stoned in my presence and the presence of other residents of the larger Chingola community,” said hon. Kazala in a taped message gone viral.

“I know the people that attacked former President Edgar Lungu and his entourage they insulted him, demeaned him and showed total disrespect it was so sad to witness,” the former legislator said in the Bemba audio.

Hon. Kazala, a famer and businessman of Chingola said, “I know these guys, the assailants, I know these people I can identity them.”

The former legislator said because of the attacks, President Lungu´s security detail made a tactful decision to take a back route and left Chingola for Lusaka to escape the violence and potential bloodshed.

“President Lungu and his team abandoned the burial ceremony for the sake of peace and safety of other mourners in Chingola using another route in order to avoid bloodshed,” said hon. Kazala.

The responsibility of chief mourner according to Kazala, a close family member of the Kambwilí´s was passed onto hon. Given Lubinda, the PF vice President by President Lungu.

Hon. Kazala said after a brazen attack on Lungu, “the violent UPND cadres went to funeral house of the Kambwili´s ran down the shelter tents and poured sand in food pots and plates meant for mourners to eat after the burial, a matter police and government representative Chipoka Mulenga, a cabinet minister is aware of.”

Hon. Kazala is wondering, “why Mr. Chipoka Mulenga has not reported the unruly cadres to the police up to now or the three cars that chased President Lungu out of town.”

Following the incident hon. Kazala said, “I don’t feel safe as a Zambian, especially if violence can erupt in the presence of the police and a government minister.”

Hon. Kazala said, “what I saw today (Sunday attack on ECL) is wrong, UPND must change, the former President deserves respect. The devil is at work here…Zambia needs peace and christianity I implore the police to arrest the UPND cadres that attacked the former President Edgar Lungu who did not provoke anyone he just came to mourn the Kambwili brothers like all of us.”

Edgar Lungu is the only former President in Africa without police protection and has since arrived back home in Lusaka the capital after escaping the brutal attack.

His successor President Hichilema has stripped him of all police protection and a retirement package after he decided to return to politics and seek re-election in the next polls set for August 2026.
The police have issued no comment on the attack of the former head of state.

ZAMBIANS NOT INTERESTED IN MWAMBA AND PF DECEITFUL PUBLIC STUNTS

October, 21st 2024

LUSAKA – The Patriotic Front (PF) has consistently failed to offer any meaningful opposition, choosing instead to rely on innuendo, propaganda, and outright lies. Their complete inability to engage in constructive criticism is a disservice to Zambia and a clear indicator that they are unfit to regain the trust of the Zambian people.

The PF during their stay in office were entrusted with the resources of the nation which they feasted on instead of safeguarding, leaving the nation in debt and despair. Now, having been rejected by the people, they come back, begging for a second chance, claiming they have changed. But the Zambian people will not be deceived again.

Former President Edgar Lungu and his team have now resorted to propaganda to regain public sympathy. Their recent claims that Lungu was attacked at the Kambwili funeral are nothing more than fabricated lies. Such dishonesty, especially during a time of mourning, is not only disrespectful but shows just how low the PF is willing to stoop to stay relevant.

It’s been more than 24hrs and Zambians are waiting for the evidence of the alleged attack on the ECL convoy but nothing has been coming forth other than some old video which Emmanuel and his surrogates tried to cheat the nation with. This country needs order. We cannot allow one individual or a group of people that were rejected by Zambians at the altar to continue to wanting to mislead this nation. We only have one Zambia and one Nation and we shall not allow selfish individuals set this country on fire like they almost did during the gassing period. 60 years of peace and harmony has not been achieved only for others to destroy it using the cyberspace. Let law enforcement agencies play their constitutional role for once before we ask UPND members and Zambians in general to help them in that regard.

The shallow-minded insinuations by Emmanuel Mwamba, a former diplomat, further exemplify the PF’s desperation. Mwamba’s claim that PF officials were barred from visiting Chishimba Kambwili in the hospital is another falsehood aimed at stirring unnecessary public outrage. Instead of exercising diplomacy, as one would expect from a former envoy, Mwamba is at the forefront of spreading lies and deceiving the Zambian people.

The PF has abandoned any pretense of offering legitimate political opposition. Their daily insults against President Hakainde Hichilema and their defamatory lies show a party that has lost its moral compass. This is not opposition—it is propaganda, designed to distract from their own failures and misdeeds.

Under President Hichilema’s leadership, Zambia has witnessed remarkable progress. The PF, fully aware of this, refuses to acknowledge the strides made in restoring public and international trust. Where the PF failed, President Hichilema has succeeded. His administration has restructured Zambia’s debt, created massive employment opportunities, and rejuvenated the mining sector, among many other achievements. Yet, the PF, out of bitterness and envy, continues to spread lies.

Even during a time of mourning, when the nation should unite in grief and remembrance, the PF has shamelessly propagated falsehoods. They have disrespected the memory of those lost, using the occasion to peddle their toxic propaganda. This is not the behavior of a party that respects the people or the nation—it is the behavior of a party that only cares about power.

The Zambian people are not naive. They remember the years of mismanagement, corruption, and failed promises under the PF. They have experienced firsthand the destruction the PF brought upon the nation, and they will not be fooled again. The people have tried and tested the PF and found them wanting.

President Hichilema is a man of peace, and despite the constant barrage of lies and insults, has remained committed to leading the nation forward. Instead of responding with anger, he has chosen to work in silence, focusing on restoring the nation’s dignity and prosperity. But the PF has chosen a different path—a path of bitterness, hatred, and division.

Even after the National Day of Prayer, Fasting, and Reconciliation, which should have been a moment for the PF to reflect and seek unity, they have continued their campaign of lies and deception. It is clear that this important day means nothing to them. Their actions show that they have no interest in reconciliation or in moving the country forward. All they care about is power, no matter the cost.

The PF has proven, time and again, that they have no vision for Zambia, no plan for the future, and no respect for the people. Their only strategy is to deceive, mislead, and manipulate, hoping that the Zambian people will forget their failures.

But the people of Zambia will not forget. They will not allow the PF to return to power and continue feasting on the nation’s resources. The Zambian people deserve better—they deserve a government that works for them, not against them.

In the end, the PF’s lies and propaganda will not save them. The truth is clear for all to see: the PF is a party of the past, a party of failure, and a party that has nothing to offer Zambia except more of the same corruption and deceit. The people will not be fooled.

JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE VERSUS POLITICAL INTERFERENCE: THE DEATH OF JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE IN ZAMBIA- Jonas Zimba

JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE VERSUS POLITICAL INTERFERENCE: THE DEATH OF JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE IN ZAMBIA

By Jonas Zimba

INTRODUCTION

The Principle of Separation of powers applies to many common law countries with equal force and Zambia is not an exception.
It is envisaged under this principle that one arm of government will provide an oversight function over another.

Meaning that, the Legislature will enact laws, the Executive will perform executive functions and the Judiciary through the Courts will interpret the law and check any excesses.
Of interest in this case is the Judiciary, this is because the death of the judiciary spells the death of any nation and its governance systems.

Citizens will be oppressed, critical voices will be silence and checks and balances will be removed completely introducing an arbitrary system which cripples a nation and buries any system.

Awolowo, Obafemi(1981) , Justice M.C .Sharma (2001)  and Justice Stephen Breyer.(2005)  all opine that the Judiciary is the spirit and conscious of any nation.
It is opined that once the spirit and conscious of any nation dies, the nation is dead.
Under the Zambian Constitution as amended in 2016, Article 122 provides for the functional independence of the Judiciary. That is to say, the Judiciary ought to be independent.

The Chief Justice of Zambia Dr Mumba Malila SC, on the 8th of August, 2024 did present a speech and it was reported in the Diggers Newspaper of the 9th August, 2024 , the headline being” we can do better in the Corruption Fight”. In the said story the Chief Justice is reported saying,” am I happy with the corruption fight? It is a very difficult question but the only thing I can say is that there is quite a lot of scope for improvement”.

It is a common fact now more than ever, that the question of the fight against corruption is a matter for the Executive as it is a political matter and not the Judiciary’s cup of tea. The Judiciary is there to decide cases on facts and law, comprised of professionals who have taken oath to protect the Constitution whereas Executive is largely composed of politicians as they ascend to such position either by election or political appointment. Has political pressure visited the Judiciary?
One would ask, is the Judiciary independent given the political environment within which it exists?

JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE

What is judicial independence?
Most of the adjudicators in the Judiciary in Zambia are lawyers. If we talk about Judges, the first qualification is that for one to be a Judge, they must have practiced as an Advocate for a minimum period of ten years depending on the Court they are ascending to .
The oath of office taken by a lawyer is distinct, it requires that one protects and defends the Constitution, the Judicial oath requires one to do justice in accordance with the Constitution whereas the other oaths of office require one to protect the Constitution only . The oath taken provides as follows:

“OATH OF OFFICE
I …………………………………………………………………………………………………….., having been appointed/elected/nominated…………………………………..do swear/affirm that I will well and truly serve the Republic and the President of Zambia; that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the President and the Republic of Zambia, that I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of Zambia, as by law established; and that I will not directly or indirectly reveal or transmit any such information or matter as shall be brought under my consideration, or shall be made known to me by reason of my office except as may be required in the discharge of my duties as such or with the authority of the President.
SO HELP ME GOD.”

It is a given, that a judge is a lawyer before they are a judge and the above oath applies to them with equal force and as to whether they forget this oath when they become judge or not is a topic for another day.

The international covenant on civil and political rights, identifies the three indispensable attributes of judicial office: Competence, Independence and impartiality .
Judges must be independent in order for them to properly discharge their functions of dispute resolution between the state and individuals or between private parties.

Shimon Shetreet ( Oct 1984) opines that the judiciary must be free from outside influence and external pressures when it adjudicates constitutional controversies, resolves administrative disputes or rules on criminal prosecutions or civil actions . Independence means both personal independence and substantive independence
Various writers have defined Judicial Independence in many ways.

One of the definitions of Judicial independence given by Sandra Day O’Connor (January 2008) is that judicial independence means to guarantee the rule of law. Whatever this means is a subject of discussion for another day.

David Kosar (2013)  opines that, While one might still believe that the judicial power is “the least dangerous branch,” it is no longer accepted that the judiciary wields only limited power. The evidence is clear.

The power of courts has increased worldwide at an unprecedented pace in the last few decades. Judges often clash with the executive and interfere with the agendas of parliaments. As a result, virtually all developed legal cultures now accept that judges are not like umpires whose job is just to call balls and strikes, to paraphrase the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John Roberts,2 and that they sometimes resort to judicial law-making.

Two variable here are at play judicial independence and political interference.
Political Interference.
What is political interference?

Nathaniel T Dreyfuss (2013) argues that political pressure on the Judiciary is often argued as political interference in the court process. But what is political interference?
Natheniel T Dreyfuss (2013) further argues that public pressure exerted by the Executive on the Judiciary is perceived to be interference and it compromises the independence of the Judiciary.

From the flavour of the arguments by the above named author, it appears interference may mean anything that includes any form of meddling with the Judiciary by the Executive, any infraction or purported disciplinary measures premised on some political ground instituted by the Executive even through surrogates of any member of the executive whose desired end is to circumvent the law and put pressure on the Judiciary or the Judge.

Sunday Bontur Lugard (2017) opines that internal interference, as against traditionally known external interference in form of executive meddling in the performance of judicial functions skewed appointment processes, poor funding and tenure insecurity among others amounts to interference in the Judiciary.

WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE JUDICIARY IN ZAMBIA TODAY?

In recent times, the Zambia Judiciary has come under immerse pressure and has had a lot of infractions as regards its operations.
The first of this began with the appointment of Chief Justice Mumba Malila SC who the President of the Republic of Zambia referred to as “Our Chief Justice” in many forums including the Law Association of Zambia Conference held in Livingstone on the 13th April, 2023.

One would wonder when the executive or the President went on to claim such things as the Chief Justice being “Our Chief Justice”. May be he meant something else but it may also be that we are thinking too much about this statement but let’s leave it here for now.
The appointment of Dr Malila happened on the 22nd December, 2021 and before that he was a Supreme Court Judge in Zambia who served as such from 2014 .

Following the appointment of Dr Malila, Justice Joshua Banda was dragged to the Judicial Complaints Commission and subsequently removed as Judge of the High Court. This happened on the 6th May, 2022 and while Judge Banda was being removed, Judge Sunday Nkonde was suspended as judge .

Judge Joshua banda was removed following a complaint of alleged corruption which is alleged to have taken place before he became Judge. This matter went all the way to the Constitutional Court . One would ask, can a Judge be removed from office for something that is alleged to have been committed or done before he became Judge?

This is a topic for another day but what about the vetting and clearing process? What happened to it?
It did not end at this, Judge Nkonde was subsequently removed from office. This was on the 3rd June, 2022 .

This Judge was removed following the determination of the Post Newspapers case. The President of Zambia Mr Hakainde Hichilema while in opposition is on record as having said that they will not sit idle and let the post newspaper be closed .
This is the Judge that determined the matter involving the Post newspapers and he is now out of the system as Judge.

This did not end here, Judge Wilfred Kopa Muma was removed on the 2nd July, 2023 .
The Lusaka times gave details as to why Judge Muma was removed from office.
They report that by a statement issued by the State House Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka, the President acted on recommendations made by the Judicial Complaints Commission .

The Judge was later charged with offences of wilful failure to follow procedure and abuse of authority of office  relating to matters involving his functions as Commissioner of lands then because he gave land to a political party called the Patriotic Front (PF) and the view taken is that the greatest sin you can ever commit in Zambia today under the current government is to associate with PF.

Unfortunately for this Judge, the due process has not been accorded to him. He has not been given the benefit of having his case tried in the subordinate court as such a case starts from the subordinate court and the benefit of appealing to the High Court in case of a conviction and so on.

A Judge Must be allowed to have access to due process and the process must be fair . Whether this is being done or not is a discussion for another day.
Between the period 2023 to 2024, Judge Timothy Katenekwa was equally removed from office.

Judge Katenekwa was removed on the 28th January, 2024 . This was done about a month after the judge was suspended from office. This issue was heightened when Judge Katenekwa issued a subpoena to the Registrar of Societies  then following a dispute between warring parties in the Patriotic Front Party, a party that has accused the ruling party of causing and instigating divisions therein.
From 2022 to January, 2024, about four Judges had been removed from office and three are on suspension who truth be told are likely to also go.

The suspension of these judges if you remember was done a few days before the hearing of the now famous eligibility case  .

This has never happened before in the History of the Zambian Judicial system from the records so far accessed and remains a shocking event. What would the motivation for such a thing be?
In the past three years, there has been a very aggressive move by the Judicial Complaints Commission in Zambia.

This body is a creature of the Constitution and created by Article 236 of the Zambian Constitution . It exercises its power under Articles 143 and 144 of the Constitution of Zambia.

There has been a serious purging or removal of Judges from the Judiciary of Zambia by this commission. As indicated above, so far four judges have been removed and the latest one being Judge Timothy Katenekwa a Judge of the High Court for Zambia and now three Constitutional Court Judges are on suspension and likely to be removed.
The removal of most if not all these judges has a link to perceived political interference in the functions of the Judiciary for the simple reason that their removal or discipline is related to some political event.

One would ask, how will this removal of Judges ensures judicial independence amidst perceived political interference?
Is Judicial independence now dead in Zambia?
It must be noted here that the Chief Justice Mumba Malila, will go down in history as the only Chief Justice in Zambia who allowed erosion of Judicial Independence as well as polarised the Judiciary to a point of weakening and wiping out its independence.
One of the tenants of the office Judge is that a person occupying such an office must be guaranteed security of tenure .

Is there political interference in the Judiciary in Zambia? The position is now clear that there is political interference in the Judiciary and this can be seen from some Judgements that are not only strange but are politicking in themselves. The case of Michelo Chizombe v Edgar Lungu and two others  referred to above, is a classic example.

The  Constitutional Court has no power to revisit its decision as provided by the Constitution and only the Supreme Court can revisit its decision in qualified circumstances . It is strange that the Court is doing something that it does not have power to do but all this is very suspicious but it is illegal.  What would the motivation for this be?

Recently the case of ECZ v Belemu Sibanze  which sends waves of shock and paralysis when one reads it. This case has extinguished the right to seek redress were there is improper exercise of an administrative or statutory power. Essentially the decision says you can commit an illegality and there will be no one to check you and correct it. This is very sad. The Court has said, there can be no Judicial review in matters of elections. This position of the law is wrong both at law and when you apply common sense.
The removal of Judges and suspension of Judges of the Constitutional Court in somewhat suspicious circumstances even makes it worse.
Clearly there is political interference in the judiciary and judicial independence is dead.

Conclusion.

The principle of separation of powers in this country is no longer alive and at play.
There are various incidences that point to but one fact, that is to say that the judiciary is under attack and this cannot be denied anymore.
Ackerman. B. ( 2019)  argues that  many autocratic regimes have found the rule of law an extremely useful device in governing their societies. Under this set up.

The autocrats assert their arbitrary right to establish the rules, but require the bureaucracy and the judiciary to implement their commands I a consistent and principled fashion.
The position taken in this paper is that there is political interference in the Judiciary and judicial independence is dead.

This is executive invasion of the judiciary and they use the judiciary to achieve their illegal aims. This is in Morden times called law fare.
Major General Charles J. Dunlap (2008) argues that law fare is a concept that can be used for good or bad purposes.
In our present case, law fare should be understood to be the use of the law for a bad purpose that is to legitimise the illegal wishes of the executive through interference with judicial systems and functions.
For example, if A is an opposition leader and B wants the opposition leader to be jailed, he will create an offence and put public pressure as well as personal pressure on the judiciary to achieve this objective.
The perception created in this country now is that the executive is interfering with the judicial function as can be seen from many cases where the executive arm has been mention.

Sishuwa Sishuwa( Oct 19, 2024) , refers to a story of one German pastor and how we kept away from speaking about ills because it was not him that was affected.
“first they came for the socialist, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

They, they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jews.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me”
The writer goes further and says he hopes that none of us will wake one day and adopt the words:
“first they came for the Archbishop and I did not speak out- because I was not an Archbishop. Or a Priest. nest they came for a Former President and I did not speak out- because I was not a Former President or his supporter.

Then they came for the Judges, then I did not speak out – because I was not a Judge…..”
The above write up raises questions as to whether the Judiciary is independent amidst political pressure/ interference or not.
It is opined that the chilling effect of Executive action which is vailed but cannot be hidden any longer in Zambia is symbolic of political interference in the judicial function and must be spoken against as it is not good for the country.

There is empirical evidence here and from the facts highlighted in this paper, that the Politicians now forming the executive arm of government have interfered with the judicial function of this country.
The position taken here is that where there is political interference, there is no judicial independence.

The re -opening of the eligibility case, a decision by the Constitutional Court which has effectively said in election matters there is no Judicial review, and the sending to jail of many notable people on grounds that are not supported by evidence as well as the tactical removal of Judges which all smell of nothing but executive interference.

Unless the executive let’s go of the judiciary, justice will remain a dream in this country.
As long as the executive keeps its tab on the judiciary, judicial independence will be dead and will remain as such.
Political interference always compromises judicial independence. STOP IT!

MDI DIRECTOR STRONGLY CONDEMNS EMMANUEL MWAMBA’S FALSEHOODS AND URGES NATIONAL UNITY

PRESS STATEMENT: MDI DIRECTOR STRONGLY CONDEMNS EMMANUEL MWAMBA’S FALSEHOODS AND URGES NATIONAL UNITY

Lusaka, 21st October 2024
The Muvombo Development Initiative (MDI), through its Director Mr. Winter Muvombo, has expressed deep displeasure over the false claims made by Emmanuel Mwamba, former Zambian diplomat, aimed at destabilizing peace in the country. Mwamba’s recent Facebook post, which falsely suggested an attack on opposition leader Edgar Lungu, has been widely debunked. The post used misleading footage unrelated to the event, igniting unnecessary public fear and confusion.

Mr. Muvombo issued a stern warning, stating, “Mwamba’s deliberate spread of falsehoods is unacceptable, shameful, regrettable, dangerous, and an embarrassment to our nation. We urge law enforcement agencies to take an interest in this case to deter such reckless actions in the future. Zambia is on the path to celebrating its 60th Independence Anniversary, and we cannot allow individuals with hidden agendas to sow division among us.”

The fabricated post, which Mwamba deleted shortly after being exposed, falsely implicated unrest surrounding Lungu. In fact, Lungu attended a funeral on the same day, mingling freely with fellow Zambians. “Our thoughts are with the Kambwili family during this difficult time, and we extend our well wishes to Dr. Kambwili and his brother for a speedy recovery,” added Mr. Muvombo.

Mr. Muvombo also called on the nation to embrace the spirit of unity exemplified by President Dr. Hakainde Hichilema, who has consistently demonstrated leadership that values the rule of law over vengeance. He emphasized, “President Hichilema leads with fairness, aiming to serve all Zambians equally, not for personal gain. If Mwamba is being supported by ‘Former President Edgar Yungu,’ it is unfortunate. Such tactics will not derail God’s will for Zambia.”

Mr. Muvombo further highlighted the continuous loss of members from the Patriotic Front (PF), the former ruling party, who are defecting to the ruling UPND on a daily basis. “PF is losing numbers rapidly as their members realize the progress being made under the New Dawn Government. Thousands have defected, choosing results over the noise propagated by the opposition. The PF can only watch as more Zambians embrace the vision of the ruling party.”

Regarding the recent removal of three Constitutional Court judges, Mr. Muvombo noted that the decision was based on the findings of the Judicial Complaints Commission. He stated, “The decision to remove these judges was founded on their actions, which undermined the integrity of the judiciary. While we refrain from labeling them corrupt, justice must prevail, and the people of Zambia demand accountability from all sectors, including the judiciary.”

The MDI Director challenged Zambians to reject distractions from individuals like Mwamba and focus on the country’s development. “Under the New Dawn Government, Zambia is seeing thousands defect to the UPND due to visible results—not noise. The people have chosen progress over empty propaganda. Mwamba, if you stand by your words, why did you delete your post?”

As the nation approaches its 60th Independence Anniversary, Zambians are urged to celebrate peace, unity, and the progress made under President Hichilema’s leadership, rather than be drawn into baseless political squabbles.

ZAMMSA HAS BEEN BANKRUPT SINCE 2015, SAYS FIRED DG

ZAMMSA HAS BEEN BANKRUPT SINCE 2015, SAYS FIRED DG

FORMER Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) Director General Victor Nyasulu has broken his silence following his dismissal, accusing the government agency of being technically bankrupt since 2015.

Nyasulu’s remarks come months after a major scandal involving 61 missing trucks of medicines rocked the agency, culminating in his firing and the dissolution of the board led by Anna Chifungula.

Nyasulu claimed that when he became DG for the agency, he discovered deep financial mismanagement which he says had been there for years.

“When I became DG, I noticed that ZAMMSA’s books were in a mess and this issue dates back to 2015. There was technical insolvency, technical bankruptcy because as a government institution, ZAMMSA wasn’t being held accountable for unpaid obligations to entities like NAPSA and ZRA and with political interference, you never get shut down,” said Nyasulu.

According to Nyasulu, ZAMMSA’s funding has been woefully insufficient to meet the rising demands.

He alleged that the agency has been struggling to survive and nothing was being done.

“ZAMMSA has been struggling just to survive. We have been operating with only K42.6 million for the year, while monthly salaries alone are over K7 million. The agency’s survival has hinged on the goodwill of cooperating partners like the Global Fund, the US government, and CHAZ,” said Nyasulu.

He claimed that there were attempts for him to rectify the situation at hand but they were thwarted.

In November last year, after much back and forth with the Ministry of Finance, ZAMMSA finally secured an eight percent allocation for procurement and management.

However, the former DG alleged that then Health minister Sylvia Masebo intervened and instructed the Treasury to cancel their request.

“From January to July this year, we wrote over 20 letters to the Ministry of Finance, pleading for funds. But Masebo didn’t believe we needed the money, she thought we were just being extravagant,” he explained.

“And she also said she didn’t believe that ZAMMSA could be bankrupt for years saying that it had never happened before.”

He revealed that his dismissal from the agency was based on alleged gross negligence
which he insists to have been made a scapegoat which has taken a toll on his professional reputation.

ANDD CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO CONVENE AN ECONOMIC INDABA TO ADDRESS ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

ANDD CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO CONVENE AN ECONOMIC INDABA TO ADDRESS ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

21st October Lusaka-Zambia

The recent downgrade of Zambia’s 2024 economic growth projection by the IMF, from 2.3% to 1.2%, clearly indicates that our economy is on a negative trajectory. This forecast underscores the urgent need for attention from both the government and patriotic citizens of Zambia.

The IMF’s assessment highlights the detrimental impact of drought on our domestic economy. We acknowledge that this drought has significantly hindered economic development activities. It has led to an energy crisis, severely affecting production in key sectors and impeding overall economic growth. For example, load shedding has resulted in the collapse of many businesses, particularly SMEs, contributing to increased poverty and unemployment levels among Zambians.

The energy crisis has also escalated the cost of doing business, resulting in higher prices for basic commodities and an overall rise in the cost of living. It is essential to recognize that these elevated costs are barriers to economic growth, as they reduce the productivity of the private sector, which is vital for fostering development.

As ANDD, we believe that, in addition to the drought, several other economic challenges are impeding socioeconomic growth in our country. Many of these challenges stem from the implementation of UPND government policies and economic fundamentals. Key issues we have observed include low economic productivity, political instability, volatility in exchange rates, and a high inflation rate currently standing at approximately 15.6%. Additionally, the monetary policy rate of 13.5% remains excessively high, contributing to a lack of liquidity in the economy and limiting access to financial capital for business expansion.

Unemployment, particularly among the youth, is another critical factor inhibiting economic growth. At 60 years of independence, Zambia cannot continue on this negative economic path. We must work together to address these pressing challenges.

Zambia is endowed with vast natural resources that should drive our development. We therefore urge the government to convene an economic indaba to collectively identify sound solutions that will transform our economy and improve living standards for all Zambians.

This gathering should involve all stakeholders: the church, civil society organizations, development experts, political figures, the business community, and others. This collaboration is essential to finding innovative solutions to the economic challenges our country faces.

It is time to advocate for economic independence and unite in pursuit of sustainable development that benefits every Zambian citizen, regardless of political affiliation, tribe, class, or religion.

The number of judges fired by Hichilema in three years is more than the total number of judges fired by all his six predecessors in 57 years — historian Sishuwa

SISHUWA SISHUWA writes on X (formerly Twitter)…

President Hichilema has fired more judges in three years — seven and counting — than all his six predecessors did in 57 years: one!

m.youtube.com/watch?v=iigNd_U99bs

A more structured and broad minded approach is extremely beneficial as opposed to the targeted and individual changes we are seeing. The reality is that we will always have the problem of incompetent and unqualified judges as long as the process of appointment is led by the executive. It  does not matter who is in power. As long as we maintain the framework of appointing judges that we have been using until now, the result will always be the same: a judiciary that generally lacks the ethos of independence, integrity and accountability. Transparency in the judicial appointments system is one of the key issues that need to be addressed in order to stop this persistent challenge. Targeting individuals for removal is not the way to go because this approach does not address the root of the problem: the appointment process. Even several of the judges that Hichilema himself has appointed do not qualify to sit on the bench!

The very fact, in Zambia’s case, that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) can only recommend appointments leaves room for manipulation. The executive should not be given any authority to alter what has been decided by a competent body, once that body is properly constituted. I know of an accomplished law professor who, when the JSC approached him for the ConCourt position, indicated his availability subject to the positions being advertised. Of course the positions were not advertised. He was subsequently informed that the JSC had recommended him for President of the Court (without interviewing him!), but the list was changed (presumably at State House) which would violate the Constitution. This shows the room for manipulation that I am talking about.

I do think that our courts have also missed the opportunity to properly apply the law. In Minister of Information v Chembo, the Supreme Court gave a narrow interpretation of “recommendation” which has since been abused by the executive to appropriate to itself constitutional powers it does not have. But the current executive has gone beyond merely exercising the discretion to refuse to appoint those recommended by the JSC to doing the selection, which is not constitutionally  permissible. In Kenya, the courts have made clear in several cases that the President is bound by the JSC’s recommendations and that the President’s role in the process is ceremonial: formal act of appointment, swearing in and gazettement. We will do well to push for reform that takes Zambia in this direction.

UPND’S AGENDA TO CHANGE CONSTITUTION USING ECZ….they want to remove 50 plus one and the Running Mate clauses, claims SP Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson

UPND’S AGENDA TO CHANGE CONSTITUTION USING ECZ
….they want to remove 50 plus one and the Running Mate clauses, claims SP Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson

Ndola…. Monday October 21, 2024

The Socialist Party (SP) on the Copperbelt has accused the UPND government of wanting to change the Republican Constitution using the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Socialist Party Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson Dr. Brian Chirambo has alleged that the UPND wants to remove the 50 plus one and Running Mate clauses from the Constitution.

Dr. Chirambo says the establishment of the Electoral Reform Technical Committee is a sham meant to serve the interests of the UPND and not Zambians.

He said the UPND wants to bring the simple majority in the Constitution for them to remain in office beyond 2026.

“The establishment of the Electoral Reform Technical Committee is a sham and we think it’s an illegal process. It’s a process that does not serve the interests of the Zambians. Our experience when we went to make our submissions at the Electoral Reform Technical Committee here in Ndola demonstrated that the ECZ is being used as a tool to open constitutional amendments,” he told journalists on the Copperbelt on Saturday.

“There is no real issue that they want to change in the Constitution, but what they want to do is to open a process of changing the Constitution of the land. Our experience there at the Committee further demonstrated our fears that what they want to do is to deal with the 50 plus one and Running Mate.

“This issue is being driven by those individuals with an interest of the UPND and not the interests of the majority Zambians. As Socialist Party on the Copperbelt, we are on firm belief that the UPND wants to remove the 50 plus one in order to have a simple majority. They also want to remove the Running Mate so that they choose their own Republican Vice President.”

Dr. Chirambo claimed that the ECZ is not the right institution to champion the Constitution Reforms.

Meanwhile, Dr Chirambo castigated the UPND government for increasing electricity tariffs saying this will result in high production costs which will affect the consumers.

“The challenge we have is huge. If you read how they have structured the increment, they are doing what we call ‘sugar coating’ on the people of Zambia. They have increased for the commercial consumers such bakeries and other producers of goods and they are saying they have reduced for residential consumers who use less than 200 units per month. They are crocked! The cost of doing business is going up and the cost of living will also go up as the producers will pass on the cost on the consumers.”

Musa Mwenye trailed, in an accident

Musa Mwenye trailed, in an accident

By Mast Reporter

Former Attorney General Musa Mwenye was this morning involved in a minor road traffic accident that left his car with a damaged bullbar after he hit into a gate near his home.

Meanwhile, sources in the police have revealed to The Mast that Mwenye panicked after he noticed, in the rear mirror, a car that was trailing him behind.

But according to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, the accident happened when Mwenye lost control of the vehicle.

“Police in Lusaka have recorded a damage-only road traffic accident involving Mr. Musa Mwenye. The accident occurred today, October 20, 2024, at around 04:00 hours along Lake Road near Kwacha Square Institute, opposite Choppies, Lusaka. Brief facts of the matter indicate that Mr. Musa Mwenye, 49, of Stand 22858, Kabulonga, was driving a Toyota Hilux with registration number BAX 1085 when he lost control and hit a gate, causing several damages to the vehicle,” said Chilabi on the Zambia Police Service’s Facebook account.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which struck the gate, forced it open, and subsequently crashed into a window of the Copperbelt University building. A breathalyzer test was administered, revealing an alcohol content higher than the legal limit of 0.38 mg/100 ml. Mr. Mwenye was briefly held at Woodlands Police Station but was immediately released to seek further medical attention. The vehicle remains at Woodlands Police station, and further investigations into the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol, contrary to Section 157(i) of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002, have been initiated, along with inquiries into other traffic offences.”

Earlier, Mwenye confirmed the accident on his Facebook page.

“I wish to confirm that I was involved in a minor road traffic accident earlier this morning in which my vehicle was the only one involved and has suffered some damage. I am well and at home and I have not suffered any injuries and thank [m]embers of the public for the concern showed for my wellbeing,” wrote Mwenye.

Meanwhile, a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that Mwenye is a marked man.

“It is true that State Counsel Mwenye was involved in a minor accident less than one kilometre from his house. A few of my colleagues had trailed him for a while, so when the accident happened, they arrived on the scene within seconds around 4am,” the officer said.

Asked why the police had trailed Mwenye, the officer explained that the former chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission board is a marked man.

“Please do not reveal my identity under any circumstances, because I will lose my job. Okay, ba Mwenye has a team of intelligence officers that have been tasked to trail him wherever he goes. There seems to be some intelligence in higher circles that if ba ECL is ruled out, the opposition will ask ba Mwenye or [State Counsel John] ba Sangwa to be their candidate for 2026,” the officer said. “So, some of my colleagues were asked to start trailing certain people including ba Mwenye to secure damaging information. Even ba Sangwa and other people are being followed. They are looking for anything such as who he is meeting with, and look for other incriminating weaknesses such as women, you know us men. In fact, even when the accident happened, the hope was that State Counsel would be found with a woman in the car who is not the wife but he was alone. I am not one of them, but my colleagues have been trailing him for some time”

The source disclosed that the officers had trailed Mwenye last night and were parked outside the area where he was having drinks with friends.

“They were even parked outside the area where he and his friends were drinking from. When he left, they followed him. The intention was to stop him at some point and conduct a random breathalyser test. Kuoneka ati (it seems that) the State Counsel looked into the rear mirror, noticed that my colleagues were trailing him, and he panicked. In the process, he hit into that gate. This explains why within seconds, a car had arrived at the scene, and it turned out to be the police,” the police officer disclosed.

Asked if it was true that Mwenye’s car was severely damaged as alleged by Facebook pages aligned to the ruling UPND and State House, the officer said it was not seriously damaged.

“You mean the pictures published on Koswe, and other Facebook pages of the ruling party showing the images of an extensively damaged car? That is not ba Mwenye’s car. As the statement that was issued by our Assistant Public Relations Officer stated, the number plate of his car is BAX 1085. The car only suffered damage to its bullbar. I will see if I can send you the pictures of the car that we got on the scene.  The registration number of the car that ma [the] pages yaba [of] UPND have published is BAR 6489. Yes, that one has been extensively damaged, but it belongs to the former Minister of Home Affairs ba Stephen Kampyongo who was involved in a separate road traffic accident near State House also this morning,” explained the officer. “As I understand it, pali ba Mwenye, the plan is to exploit this incident to create a public narrative that State Counsel is a drunkard, but I would advise him and other people including ba ECL to be careful. They should avoid traveling alone and especially at night or over long distances. You know, even us as police officers, we are not happy being used like this. We are just suffering like other people. It’s not nice what we are being made to do. Have you noticed how we were quick to issue a statement on Mwenye’s case but are yet to do so on several other accidents including that bus that claimed lives?”

Reality Check: IMF’s Downgrading of Economic Growth for 2024 Shatters 2025 Budget

Reality Check: IMF’s Downgrading of Economic Growth for 2024 Shatters 2025 Budget

Setting ambitious goals in economic planning is generally viewed as a proactive approach to advancement. Nevertheless, it is crucial for these aims to strike a balance between being ambitious and realistic. The recent revision by the IMF to Zambia’s economic growth projection, reducing it from 2.3% to 1.2%(Bloomberg), casts uncertainty on the achievability of the government’s objective of attaining 6.6% economic growth in the 2025 budget.

The government’s aspiration for a 6.6% economic growth in the 2025 budget is commendable, but it is imperative to consider the prevailing  economic and financial circumstances. The recent revision of the IMF’s forecast highlights the challenges impeding the economy, casting doubt on the feasibility of the ambitious target and highlighting the need for more grounded projections in the budget planning process.

The IMF has revised Zambia’s economic growth forecast, raising concerns about the feasibility of the country achieving a significant increase from 1.2% to the projected 6.6% within a short period. The country’s ability to meet some of the fundamental targets outlined in the 2025 budget, such as the government’s aim to utilize 80% of domestic resources, may result in a rise in domestic debt and crowd out the private sector from accessing credit markets. This could lead to a decrease in tax revenue from private enterprises, putting additional strain on households and local businesses.

The optimistic forecasts for higher VAT collection in the 2025 budget could exacerbate the financial strain on households and local businesses already facing challenges within the nation’s economy. Additionally, the UPND government is implementing contractionary measures on both monetary and fiscal fronts to stabilize the economy. Considering the concerns raised, along with the downgraded economic growth forecast for 2024, it seems apparent that the projected 6.6% is unrealistic, warranting modifications to the 2025 budget.

Hence, the IMF’s downgrading of economic growth forecasts for 2024 acts as a reality check for the ambitious 6.6% economic growth target set for the 2025 budget. The UPND government must adjust the budget accordingly to reflect current economic conditions. Neglecting to make these adjustments may result in an impractical and unachievable budget, potentially exacerbating economic challenges in the upcoming year

In essence, it is crucial to balance ambition with practicality and a thorough grasp of the present economic landscape in economic planning. The recent adjustment of growth forecasts by the IMF should serve as a prompt for the government to reevaluate its objectives and make necessary adjustments to establish a sustainable and attainable trajectory for economic growth for the 2025 budget.

CHADIZA POLICE HUNT EVIL GULE WAMUKULU WHO WHIPPED DEFENCELESS GIRL TILL SHE COLLAPSED

CHADIZA POLICE HUNT EVIL GULE WAMUKULU WHO WHIPPED DEFENCELESS GIRL TILL SHE COLLAPSED

A NYAU dancer of the Gule Wamukulu in Chadiza District of Eastern Province has abandoned his colorful costumes made from animal remains and has gone on the run in fear of police who have launched a manhunt for him.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/znPMsQEVJaYu48ik/?mibextid=oFDknk

Now, rather than seeking ancestral intervention to alleviate the drought in his hunger-hit district, the fugitive Gule Wamukulu is engaging his gods to grant him protection against the painful slaps administered by the men and women from Lilayi.

The nyau dancer in question is sought for assaulting a 17-year-old girl, whom he struck repeatedly with a walking stick until she lost consciousness.

The young lady’s transgression was late arrival to sing for the masked nyau during an evening ceremony on October 15.

According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, on the evening of the incident, the 17-year-old female victim and her friend went to Fwintha Village to watch and sing for the Chewa traditional dance known as “Gule Wamkulu.”

Upon arrival, the two young ladies were intercepted by a duo of masked nyau dancers, who ordered them to depart, citing that their late arrival precluded participation in the ‘Gule’ event’s musical performances.

The victim and her friend complied and began walking back home.

As darkness descended, the unsuspecting duo walked away, unaware of the sinister shadows lurking behind. Alongside his accomplice, the Gule Wamukulu stalked his prey with feet pounding the earth in relentless pursuit.

The girls’ gentle footsteps quickened into a frantic sprint as the dancers closed in. The victim’s friend burst free, vanishing into the night, but the 17-year-old was trapped.

With ruthless efficiency, the spirit-posesssed attackers unleashed a barrage of blows, the walking stick cracking through the air and whipping the defenceless girl with sickening precision. The girl’s cries echoed through the desolate landscape, fading into haunting silence as consciousness slipped away.

Chilabi explained that after becoming unconscious from the beating, a relative rushed the victim to Chamandala Clinic, where she was referred to Chadiza District Hospital for further treatment.

“Following an investigation, on October 19, 2024, police apprehended Abraham Mbewe, while efforts to locate the other Gule Wamkulu dancer are ongoing,” Chilabi revealed.

“Police wish to thank the traditional leadership in the area for their cooperation and support, which led to the apprehension of the suspect,” he said.

“Meanwhile, a manhunt for the accomplice has been launched. We wish to appeal to the public to assist with any information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect, who is still at large,” added Chilabi.

JUNKIE GRANDPA ASSAULTS WIFE OVER NSHIMA

JUNKIE GRANDPA ASSAULTS WIFE OVER NSHIMA

A SIXTY-one year old man of Lusaka’s Obama Compound has found himself in court after hunger for Zambia’s staple dish, nshima, caused him to unleash fury on his wife with an iron bar and a stone.

Despite Ruth Phiri’s tireless efforts to provide for their family through menial jobs, the 42-year old found herself on the receiving end of a painful and bloody assault after her purse ran dry.

On that fateful August afternoon, James Sichula is said to have returned from a drinking binge and demanded nshima. Ruth, exhausted and resourceless, explained the the home’s empty pantry and lack of funds but the explanation fell on deaf ears.

Enraged and hungry, an innocuous chat over nshima quickly degenerated into vicious argument and when Ruth feared that her husband would turn violent, she took to her heals in fear.

But Sichula picked an iron bar and violently swung it in his wife’s direction, hitting her forehead just above her eyebrows.

“When I was about to walk out of the house, he got an iron bar and hit me above my eyebrow. I shouted for help and ran to my neighbors, who advised me to hide. Whilst running he got a stone and hit me,”Ruth testified before court after her husband was arrested and charged with assault.

Testifying against her violent husband before magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, Ruth said her husband had gone for a drinking spree and like a Lusaka ‘mario’ he demanded for nshima immediately he returned home yet he does not provide money for food.

She said Sichula issued death threats against her saying; she would not leave the house alive.

She told the Court that she reported the matter to the police with the help of her neighbors, as she sustained a swollen eyelid.

“I later went to the clinic, my eye was very swollen I could not see. It is not the first time he was hitting me with an iron bar. He did it in 2012 and I forgave him,”the woman said.

“And to make matters worse, I am the one who provides, he just wants to eat nshima but doesn’t want to provide. When I tell his relatives, they tell me that they are also tired. I have come here so that you help me since he wants to kill me.”

Ruth further disclosed that, not only was her husband violent, he liked exposing his birth suit to the children, as he would always sits in the living room naked, and whenever she asks him to dress up he says his offspring need to know how he was moulded by God.

During cross examination Sichula asked his wife about the crime she committed which led to him battering her and she responded that it was because she did not cook him nshima.

Unsatisfied with the wife’s answer, Sichula clarified that it was over homework.

Asked if she did not pull his family jewels, Phiri asked her husband not make false accusations against her saying; “God is my witness, I did not pull your manhood.”

Trial continues on October 29.

Former  President Edgar  Lungu escapes unhurt after UPND attack

Former Zambian Republican President ECL escapes unhurt after UPND attack

…on him and his security team in Chingola

By a Correspondent in Chingola

20.10.24

The sixth President of Zambia Edgar Lungu has described as ´ unfortunate ´ the police decision to standby and watch unruly cadres from the ruling UPND attack his motorcade in the aftermath of the funeral of Hon. Chishimba Kambwili´s brothers Mwamba and Mutale in Chingola today.

“The police were complicit in the attack, and I challenge them to deny this fact,” said the former President Lungu.

“They stood by and watched our motor-cade get attacked and did nothing to stop the cadres unfortunately…it was as if they were working together”

It took tact and skill for the Lungu security team to escape the UPND unruly posse of cadres escalate the violence in what was slowly turning into a boiling point as the former head of states life was in clear danger.

To escape the attack, the former head of state motorcade sped towards the border with Congo before the ruthless cadres finally gave up the chase along with the ´supportive´ Chingola police.

At press time, President Lungu was safe but traumatised, travelling back to Lusaka using a back route in order to avoid further attacks on his life and team.

Attacks on President Lungu have been on the rise since President Hichilema withdrew state security from him, leaving him vulnerable to harm.

Lungu is  the only former head of state in Africa to move without state security in recent history while his private home is guarded by a rag tag personal security.

Many observers have expressed fear in the past that the reason for stripping Lungu of state security is to leave him open and exposed to an open public attack from UPND cadres and any other fanatical enemy.

“I thank God that we are safe now and returning home after the funeral of the Kambwili´s brothers that perished needlessly in a fatal accident near Kasama,” said President Lungu, “our sincere condolences to hon. Kambwili and his family on this major loss of two gallant men.”

President HH should know that people distinguish facts from fiction- Aaron Ng’ambi

President HH should know that people distinguish facts from fiction

By Aaron Ng’ambi

This idea that the United Party for National Development (UPND) government has done more for this country than any other regime since independence is a fallacy.

People should know that when a president engages in such cheap talk and reckless claims, the masses begin to wonder as to why the desperation for such unfounded self-praise and dishonesty. A good example is former president Donald Trump of the United States of America who is famous for such delusional talk and misrepresentations of facts. He loves to make all sorts of unsubstantiated claims for self-exaltation. It is unfortunate that even our very own sitting President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) is beginning to sound like he is bluffing in some of his claims. This habit should not be tolerated, because it will pollute our politics with lies and falsehoods, to a point that we will fail as a nation to undo the damage – America today is a classic example of such an outcome.

Arguably, the new dawn administration has not even achieved half of what the Levy Mwanawasa regime achieved in its first term of office. Hence, to suggest that UPND has done more than any regime for the past 60 years is an over stretch. Let us go back to the basics in qualifying this argument. Just a simple question such as which industries, factories and manufacturing has this government established? Who owns the means of production in this economy today? We all know that all strategic sectors of our economy are owned, and operated by non-Zambians; from retail chain stores i.e Shoprite, Pep Stores, Pick ‘n‘ Pay, Game Stores, etc…

The mining industry is an open secret and no exception in this regard. Just look at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), Mopani Copper Mines (MCM), Roan Copper Mines, even the new dawn government’s newly commissioned Shaft 28 in Launshya – in North-Western Province we have Barrick Gold, Lumwana Mine, Kalumbila Mine , and a few other mines – while in Kafue we mine nickle, which are all foreign owned. Notwithstanding the gemstone mines on the Copperbelt, and other big profitable mines across the country. Perhaps if we owned these mines as government, and as the people of Zambia, maybe we will not be recording such high number of deaths by so-called illegal miners under the watch of the UPND.

Furthermore, let us also look at the construction sector controlled and sponsored by this administration through government contracts. It is sad to note that most, if not all infrastructure development projects, are outsourced with preference given to foreign entities and leaving crumbs or odd jobs for local contractors. For a country with qualified, trained, and equipped engineers, this is a shame!

Also, the banking sector is no different, all major banks in the country are not owned by Zambians. In fact, it’s under this regime that we have witnessed the unthinkable as we saw two local banks that Zambians could claim ownership were forced to shut down. It’s a matter of public record that the UPND government brought down the Development Bank of Zambia and went on to liquidate Investrust Bank. Regardless of what the issues may have been with these two institutions, government should have taken interest is saving these banks and provide some sort of bailout package. This would have been the right thing to do, just like we saw the Americans do to their collapsing banks in 2008-09 during the financial crisis. Anyway, it appears that Hichilema hasn’t learned anything from his friends in the West, with regards to this issue.

Evidently, all these sectors thus far mentioned were all owned and controlled by the Zambian government and the Zambian people during the reign of Dr Kenneth Kaunda (KK). At that time, the mines on the Copperbelt under the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) era gave our country the best quality of life ever recorded in our history – and created sustainable jobs that paid a living wage. Therefore, how can President HH surely say with a straight face that “his regime has done more for our country, than any of his predecessors”? Is the man being serious! This is just absolutely untrue and shameful to say the least. Any well-meaning Zambian can agree without contention, with the notion that Dr Kaunda and his colleagues laid a firm foundation. Even the little development that proceeded a little after the 27 years of Dr Kaunda was all premised on the building blocks that KK left behind. His record is unmatched – by far.

At 60 years of independence, Zambia still sits comfortably among the class of nations where few have so much wealth and privileged at the expense of masses of our people. We have seen an increase in the number of homeless people, while we struggle with poor housing conditions – just look around the township or compounds surrounding the capital city, Lusaka. We have a huge population of people living below the poverty lines (less than $1) a day, within an economy that currently has an exponential growth in the high cost of living. The poor infrastructure in urban areas, and worse off in rural places puts our country in the shadows of shame. Some of the economic roads in this country have never been done since independence, while others were only worked on by President Michael Sata. Clearly, how can the UPND be better off than all the previous regime when all the facts do not agree with them?

Conversely, in terms of economic benefits, the profits made out of these companies running our industries and economic activities from various sectors do not contribute to our national treasury, but instead leave our country in broad daylight. And only to be paid off as dividends for those who own the means of production. These are the people who are pay masters of our politicians, who wine and dine with them. Honestly, how can this be a situation that is far better off for our country since 1964? How is it that President HH can claim that his government has done more for the country when the people today have massive load shedding under his watch? In some areas these power outages go up to 21 hours, or even two to three days. The levels of unemployment are off the roof, and even for those who have jobs they are cashiers and security guards at shopping malls, which is a disgrace because these jobs do not pay a living wage. Regrettable, because of such circumstances, the levels of crime have gone up in Lusaka and other urban areas. At 60 years of independence, we import everything and consume anything without production of goods and services that our people need daily. In all fairness, this is not the change that HH himself and the UPND promised the Zambian people.

The truth is that some presidents before HH created better jobs and expanded the manufacturing industries countrywide, which gave our people pride and dignity. The focus of our forebearers was to build a country that gave life to its people, especially the young ones. There was a plan for the youth, women, and children at the core of our nation building during the post-independence years. This is evident in all the programmes, and policies of government under the United National Independence Party (UNIP). For example, the recruitment of graduates into the Zambia National Service (ZNS) did two things. Number one, it instilled a sense of pride in all young people who were transitioning from higher institutions of learning into the workforce. Just those two years or so that one spent in service to our country via ZNS was enough to give young people a sense of belonging and ownership. Secondly, the ZNS recruitment and time spent in the service made sure that young people learned tangible skills that would set them up for life thereafter. This is the kind of foundation laid down by KK, which is something HH and his UPND cannot even come close to establishing.

Even though some things went wrong during the foundational years of our Republic, no one can question the spirit and intent of our forefathers. They meant well for this country, and most of them gave everything to see us to where we are. Some of the short comings that became very obvious was the intolerance to divert views among the ruling class. The undemocratic tendencies that began to surface in government institutions, and many other negative appetites. A good lesson that by now we all should have learned from and moved away from such. Unfortunately, we are beginning to see the new dawn administration becoming very intolerant to views that criticise and critique them. This is unhealthy and unacceptable. A true democracy entails that all speech is protected under the Constitution, and that no speech is censored or curtailed. Let the people speak, even when you passionately disagree with them.

President HH should be encouraged to normalise the truth, or at least have respect for facts. As president you cannot just wake up and created your own alternative reality, and make careless statements thinking that the people will agree with you. No! That is not right, even if it’s a matter of opinion, because leaders have to be thorough and stick to facts as they formulate opinions and influence others.

6) Student bursaries/ loans and free education

Student bursaries/ loans and free education under the new dawn government have become game changers. In every district I have visited in the last two years, communities appreciate free education so much and praise for the President is everywhere. One would argue that the electoral victories by UPND for councilors at ward level are mainly a result of free education that people have embraced and appreciated. Voters now appreciate HH for letting their children go to school the KK way of free education. The expansion of government bursaries and loans to other private universities has made President HH a love of student populace countrywide, not forgetting that soon after forming government in 2021, he reinstated the student meal allowances. This is a very large constituency for the President.

7) Infrastructure development across the Republic

From the propaganda that is coming from the opposition, it seems very little is known about the extent of development that President HH and his government have taken to all corners of this country. While the opposition propaganda machinery can be said to be stronger than that of the ruling party, the opposite is the case on the ground. UPND has become very strong on the ground. UPND has scored highly on infrastructure development. For example, the neglected infrastructure development in Eastern Province, Northern, Muchinga and Luapula is now being addressed and construction sites are everywhere. Who would have known that the Chipata-Chadiza road now known as HH road would have been done to bitumen standard before 2026 elections after a decade of neglect under Patriotic Front? Talk of Chipata-Vubwi, Chipat-Lundazi, Lundazi-Chama in Eastern Province.

In December 2020 under PF government, when we were going round Eastern Province campaigning, on our way to Chama where I was subsequently arrested for unlawful assembly, it took us nine hours to reach Chama from Lundazi. However, the mitigating measures that the President has put in place of doing the road, it now takes only an average of two hours. It used to take five hours under PF to travel from Chipata to Vubwi but under this new dawn government, it now takes only forty five minutes. It used to take six to eight hours to travel from Chipata to Lundazi under PF but now the new dawn government is working on the road and it will take an average of two hours upon completion. Similarly, the road infrastructure development is everywhere in all the provinces. Almost all rural constituencies have secured graders for grading and upgrading of feeder roads to the delight of farmers and communities.

HH has no serious opposition contenders

The opposition has no serious credible contender or competitor to challenge President HH. Far from it. Like I have said before, even with a united front, HH would still come out victorious. It is the MPs that will have problems especially that the party UPND is courting some opposition MPs and Independents at the expense of some well-established UPND candidates.

9) Resolution of the current energy crisis

It is now clear that this government is on course to resolving the energy crisis countrywide. Generators have been secured and put in strategic places where small businesses are now able to have power every day. Solar energy continues to be promoted and the Zesco Solar Initiative will resolve much of the household power crisis. However, if the energy crisis is not adequately resolved by mid-2025 especially along the line of rail, most parliamentary seats will be won by the opposition candidates. It will be very difficult to win a seat in Lusaka and Copperbelt urban. That will be a huge electoral campaign issue.

10) The effect of swing provinces of Lusaka and Copperbelt

Any presidential candidate who does not win majority votes in these two provinces is unlikely to get the required threshold of 50+1. After reintroducing multi-party democracy in 1991, almost all seats in the urban constituencies of Lusaka and Copperbelt have been won by the opposition, save for 1996 elections when there was almost no opposition after UNIP boycotted the elections. Since then, the opposition has largely won the urban seats. The performance of the economy and generally the cost of living have a bearing on whom an urban voter will vote for. Currently, the cost of living in these two provinces is regarded as high due to effects of drought that has caused maize meal shortages and power crisis. The performance of the economy will surely affect most ruling party MPs in these two provinces though the effect will not be that huge for HH due to other measures that he has put for youth and small business development.

HH will win 2026 but UPND will lose parliamentary majority – Pt 1

HH will win 2026 but UPND will lose parliamentary majority – Pt 1

By Leemans Nyirenda

The bad news for PF, UKA, Tonse Alliance, Mr Lungu and Dr M’membe and other opposition leaders is that HH will still win big come 2026, thus sending them into political oblivion thereafter. However, the good news for the opposition is that UPND will likely lose parliamentary majority.

Here are the 10 reasons why HH will win 2026 elections even when the UPND will likely lose parliamentary majority:

1) Failure to empower majority of foot soldiers

Upon winning the elections in August 2021, president Hakainde Hichilema (HH) was in a hurry to deliver economic and social services to every corner of the republic and allocated K25.7 million to each constituency every year. The allocation of this fund was done without putting in place a deliberate policy to empower those who sacrificed and fought to usher UPND in government. While there is a substantial number of foot soldiers who benefited from the UPND empowerment programmes, a substantial number of them remain in the doldrums. Representations and complaints were brought and continue to be brought to the attention of the UPND top leadership without success. Applications for CDF loans for most known UPND supporters were rejected and continue to be rejected to date because those responsible for reviewing such loans included local authority officials who in most instances were on the other side of the isle. Some of them were known and still known PF surrogates and remain in those positions. The result was that the implementation of the well-intended programme failed to realise the desired results. Further, the UPND did not make and has not made necessary strategic steps to change staff in top strategic positions at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development especially at local authority level. Most of the local authorities were and are still managed by staff that embraced the previous regime. They continued to carry the vision of the previous government. This made it almost impossible to extend empowerment to those who had been denied the same in the previous government.

Individuals, companies, cooperatives and groups aligned to PF were and continue to be the main beneficiaries of CDF loans and programmes. In provinces and areas where PF was and remains strong, the situation is dire. Most UPND members, companies, cooperatives aligned to UPND continue to face discrimination and have not been adequately empowered or considered for empowerment in preference to PF members and those close to the office holders in these local authorities. The CDF guidelines have not helped much to bridge the gap because the elected officials in CDF committees merely recommend with the final decision coming from a hidden hand. There are a lot of UPND members that have remained frustrated, disillusioned and disenchanted and keep on groaning about the non-availability of empowerment. This failure to identify and empower most of these foot soldiers and supporters will surely affect both the presidential and parliamentary results come 2026.

2) PF and Independent MPs claim credit for development in their constituencies

In constituencies where members of parliament are either PF or Independent, economic development that is taking place, brought by the UPND government, is in most cases claimed to have been brought by these PF and Independent MPs. Most PF members of parliament claim credit for development in their constituencies and continue to oppose and disparage president HH. On the contrary, Independent members of parliament have been careful in their approach to this matter. They claim credit for the development in their constituencies and carefully praise President HH as the person they support. Their aim is to always eliminate competition from the UPND mainstream structures for those who wish to aspire for the parliamentary office in that constituency. In most instances these Independent members of parliament have compromised the UPND leadership at constituency, district and even at provincial level. The UPND risks losing such seats where these Independent MPs claim to support HH because when the political landscape changes, these same MPs will also change and support the PF, UKA or Tonse Alliance because that is where they belong. To trust these Independent MPs in what is perceived to be PF stronghold is highly risky and dangerous for UPND. There are already known examples and precedents.

3) Failure to successfully prosecute suspected economic looters and corrupt leaders

A lot was said and publicised about the extent of looting of public resources in the previous PF regime. Similarly, a lot has been said about suspected corruption by some leaders in the UPND government in the recent past. The failure by this government to successfully have these suspects prosecuted and convicted and sent to jail works against the current UPND government and will backfire on UPND candidates in 2026. Most suspects have already claimed and will continue to claim victimisation, selected prosecution and even persecution as they have been trying to get public sympathy. They are playing politics. They have continued to claim victims when in fact they are the culprits. Failure to arraign and successfully prosecute them will surely erode public confidence in the fight against corruption and this will lead to loss of votes to the same opposition candidates. The few that have been successfully prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced are not enough to convince Zambians that culprits have been brought to book. The plunder was at grand scale.

4) PF/UKA/Tonse Alliance richer than UPND

According to reliable sources within PF and indeed investigations carried out by this author, PF/ UKA or TONSE ALLIANCE combined are 10 times richer than the UPND and are able to sustain a successful campaign for long periods of time, unlike UPND. PF/UK or TONSE ALLIANCE have quietly continued to empower their members especially the foot soldiers and those in strategic positions of political influence. Because of the financial strength of PF/UKA or TONSE ALLIANCE their structures have remained strong and intact. Unless UPND undertakes comprehensive reforms on how the party should operate and audit their empowerment programmes so that their members and other strategic players are not left out, most UPND MPs will be casualties in 2026.

5) Scarcity of farming inputs for 2024 farming season

The availability or non-availability of farming inputs to farmers for the coming 2024-25 farming season will have a great impact on the 2026 elections considering that the 2022/23 farming season was chaotic in terms of input availability. The 2023/24 season did not yield the desired results due to poor rain patterns in most of the farming blocks and provinces. The 2024/25 farming season is a do or die affair as the lack of adequate rains during the last season in most farming blocks created massive distortions in the Zambian economy. This has stretched the UPND government to its limits. We pray the 2024/25 farming season will be blessed with adequate rains, failure to which the continuation of the current economic malaise into the year 2025 will create a political Tsunami for UPND. Such a scenario would make it difficult for UPND to win parliamentary majority in the 2026 elections even when President HH will be victorious. Suffice to say MPs from UPND strongholds will not be spared. To be continued in part 2.

Youth gunned down over fertiliser in Kasama

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;
Youth gunned down over fertiliser in Kasama

A UPND youth activist and member of the UPND in Kasama was gunned down in unclear circumstances.

The Police in Kasama were persuing a complaint where UPND youths are alleged to have confiscated fertiliser bags from small-holder farmers.

Mukuka was shot in an area called Location.

UPND in Kasama have already reported the suspected police officer who fired the fatal shot and want him charged for murder.even before circumstances of the shooting are established.

We hope that the Zambia Police can quickly issue a statement to clarify the sad circumstances like they are quick to issue statements of overspeeding before they even visit the accident scene and examine the wreckage.

I’ve always stated that the Zambia Police is now highly militarised and the site of military rifles in public such as AK.47(a deadly assault rifke officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova) is commonplace and traumatizing. Even police batons seem to have been abandoned in preference for the dangerous AK 47.

Political activist are routinely treated and controlled by police officers carrying dangerous military assault rifles, donning camouflage masks and travelling in military armoured vehicles.

The police have abandoned police patrols that act as preventive against crime, have abandoned regular public awareness programs and have instead resorted to hard methods.

The Zambia Police need to revert to civil methods of policing public order, crowd control and must rarely act or use bullets as the first choice or first resort. Such methods must only be used in cases of pursuing armed or suspected dangerous suspects, violent crimes and similar capital offences.

We hope that in their brief, the Zambia Police will disclose details of the missing fertiliser allegedly confiscated by UPND youths and the suspects they are pursuing, as well as tell us about sad circumstances that led to the shooting and fatally injuring Mukuka.

STRAY POLICE BULLET KILLS KASAMA SUSPECT, AS TENSION ERUPTS

TENSION erupted in Kasama’s location compound in Northern Province after a stray police bullet greeted a suspected criminal, who was later welcomed into land of his ancestors.

Yesterday evening, around 16:30 hours, officers in the town received a tip from members of the public and business owners who alerted them that they were physically being harassed by some group, which was also extorting money from them.

Determined at maintaining law and order, officers immediately rushed to Kasama town but it was discovered that the suspects had already left the earlier, but that didn’t halt the officers from following up the case.

The men in uniform swiftly managed to track them in Chambeshi Market located in Location Compound.

But when the suspects noticed police presence, who introduced themselves, they immediately put police in a ‘need for speed’ race after they fled in an unregistered white motor vehicle.

But unlucky for them, the Lilayi men were ready to burn fuel as they raced behind them, with the help of several air warning shots which were ignored by the suspects who drove in a manner that was endangering other road users.

Later, after several failed attempts, police then fired another shot aimed at deflating the vehicle’s tyres.

However, instead of hitting the tyres, the bullet unfortunately, found itself hitting the driver Bwalya Mukuka aged between 25 and 36.

The shot promptly ended the race, as the officers’ concern shifted to saving his life, while his buddies abandoned his bleeding body and fled for their freedom.

He was immediately rushed to Kasama General Hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced as a brought in dead (BID).

But the announcement of Mukuka’s death caused tension in Kasama town as residents poured out a riot to what they termed as police brutality.

Zambia Police Service assistant public relations officer, Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident adding that police successfully managed to control the situation and restored order to the area.

“The body of the deceased has been deposited in Kasama General Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem and burial. Police have opened an inquiry into the incident, and investigations are ongoing,” said Chilabi.

Here Are Six Best Documentaries About Rappers And The Hip-Hop Genre

The hip-hop genre has been around for over 50 years. This fact notwithstanding, the genre’s history may easily be bypassed if not told properly.

The best way to get a story across to a large number of people nowadays is through films, documentaries, and other motion picture avenues.

Some of these nuanced stories give you a better understanding of the sounds and the individuals behind the genre.

There are a few old and new documentaries about hip-hop and rappers that teach something new about some of our favorite artistes.

A few days ago, Megan Thee Stallion announced her very own documentary, “In Her Word.”

It is therefore well fitting that we put together a list of six documentaries you should add to your watchlist as we wait for all upcoming documentaries.

Nas: Time Is Illmatic
Time Is Illmatic is about the creation of one of the greatest albums ever made The impact of Time is Illmatic was an interesting dive into Nas’ emotional inspiration.

The documentary did mythologize Nas’s story.

Tupac: Resurrection
Lauren Lazin directed Tupac: Resurrection in 2003 before Allen Hughes created the documentary, “Dear Mama.”

The documentary explored poetically the impoverished origins and perilous rise of the late rapper.

The Oscar-nominated doc was posthumously narrated by Tupac through archival interview footage, with standout scenes being from his time at Baltimore School for the Arts and one of his last MTV News appearances before his untimely 1996 murder.

Lil Wayne: The Carter
This documentary gave rap fans a peek into Lil Wayne’s life one week leading up to, and then one week after, the release of the Tha Carter III album.

The Adam Bhala Lough-directed documentary gave a fascinating insight into the man without him ever speaking to the camera.

Biggie & Tupac
This 2001 investigative documentary takes a look into the deaths of Tupac and Biggie

The film directed by Nick Broomfield is said to have carried some of that true crime sleaze with it.

Nick didn’t mind putting cameras in people’s faces, making it seem as though he lacked appreciation for the culture he was covering.

He, however, ended up producing a film that presented the events of Biggie and Tupac’s lives in a more compelling way than either biopic.

Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words
TIME Studios, Roc Nation, and Amazon MGM Studios are onboard collectively to produce the documentary surrounding Grammy Award winner, Megan Thee Stallion.

In Her Words” will offer fans “unprecedented” behind-the-scenes access into the “woman behind the persona,” according to the press release.

It is also set to delve into Meg’s most vulnerable moments as she navigates life as a superstar rapper.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest
In 2011, five years before the death of A.T.C.Q. member Phife Dawg, Michael Rapaport directed a documentary, “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.

The documentary treks into the generation-defining hip-hop universe of the legendary rap group and their comeback on the 2008 Rock the Bells Tour.

Check Out The 5 Best TV Shows Created And Produced By Your Favorite Artistes

Artistes such as 50 Cent, Drake, and many others have created successful TV shows guided by their street experiences and creative vision.

The music industry has been a launching pad for most artistes to discover ways of expressing themselves and venturing into other sectors of the entertainment industry.

For years, those in the hip-hop community have leveraged and expanded their horizons in the world of television.

Storytelling is said to have no specific formula, just as the craft of a hip-hop song, and for that, most find it an easy slide.

In the era of streaming channels, most are finding success in television more than they do in music.

With that in mind, we take a look at five TV shows that were and are created by some of our favorite music artists.

Power
After winning the Hustler of the Year award at the just-ended BET Hip Hop Awards, 50 Cent is, without doubt, a true definition of the word “hustler”.

In 2014, 50 Cent, along with Courtney A. Kemp, brought all the love and past experiences he has for his hometown of NYC to create the world of Power.

The series focuses on James “Ghost” St. Patrick, your average New York City nightclub owner by day who runs a drug empire by night.

Power featured a lot of rap stars as well—50 Cent became a major character in the series as Kanaan, and they even got Kendrick Lamar to play a drug addict.

Rap Sh!t
Rap Sh!t, created by Issa Rae for HBO Max, is an American comedy television series set in the streets of Miami.

The show mimics the real lives of City Girls, JT, and Yung Miami, who also served as executive producers.

Top Boy
Top Boy is a British crime drama thriller television series set on the fictional Summerhouse estate in the London Borough of Hackney.

It was created and written by Ronan Bennett and executive produced by Drake.

The series focuses on two drug dealers, Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson), along with others involved with drug dealing and gang violence in London.

The show made it to Netflix in 2019 after it was originally canceled in 2013 (the first two seasons were renamed Top Boy: Summerhouse).

Trigger Warning With Killer Mike’Trigger
Warning was launched and hosted by rapper Killer Mike.

The aim of the TV show was for the Grammy winner to use his fame to serve as an activist, hoping to explore issues in America that affect the black community, including drugs, gangs, religion, and poverty.

The show also explored cultural taboos and allowed viewers to examine the “what ifs” and “why nots” that limit how people operate in the world.

While not everyone will agree with some things that Killer Mike does or says, he does.

However, stand in solidarity with any marginalized group and focus on what one person or small group of people can do to affect change.

Swarm
Swarm is an American satirical black comedy horror miniseries created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers.

The series tells the story of Dre, a Houston-based superfan of the singer Ni’Jah, a young woman who is obsessed with a fictional pop star. Based on the title and plot info, it seems Swarm was based on the Beyhive.

The comedy-horror spectacle tells the story of how Dre doesn’t tolerate anyone slandering the artiste she loves.

Stop sucking out poor members under guise of sowing seed – Pastor Kumuyi

The General Superintendent, Deeper Life Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has asked his fellow clergymen should stop the act of sucking out their members financially under the guise of asking them to sowing seeds for financial prosperity.

The clergyman made the appeal while preaching at a Christian meeting on Friday, October 18. According to him, the ideal thing is for members of a church to receive help from their preachers by providing solutions to their needs and not getting exploited with seed sowing.

“Elijah added value to the people that are low and those widows that cannot pay back that is what the anointing does in our lives. You add value to people; to those who are down raise them up, those who are poor.

There are preachers, they take the little that the widows have. In our nation here, they say if you sow this seed the Lord will multiply it a hundredfold. Let us be sincere, and if you are a preacher like that and you are here let’s talk; those widows have next to nothing, then we preachers we brainwash them and we tell them…and those poor widows what can they do?

They just believe every word we speak and all they have, inheritance from their late husbands they put at the apostles’ feet, and after they have done that ‘God bless you, God bless you’ everybody can say that, and they (widows) go back home.

Examine yourself, all those people that have given everything as their prophet told them in our land, where are they today, how are they feeling, how are their children doing, how are they sending their children to school instead of the prophet that has millions and millionaire already instead of him looking for the widows who their children are not in school and sponsor them just for God’s glory we don’t have that we only have those that take from the widows and render them poorer and they are getting richer and richer.”

Meanwhile, he expressed concern about how church founders are getting richer at the expense of their members.

“The preachers of today are getting richer at the expense of the members of their church. Let somebody speak out, tell our prophets, preachers, and bishops that this ought not to be. In the case of Elisha in the transformation of the nation he added supernatural supply to the suffering widows”, he added.

Mum who lost her job when she returned from maternity leave and said she was expecting another baby has been awarded £28,000

A mum who lost her job when she returned from maternity leave and said she was expecting another baby has been awarded £28,000.

Nikita Twitchen instituted an unfair dismissal claim after being made redundant from her role as an admin assistant at Pontypridd-based building firm First Grade Projects in April 2022.

She told an employment tribunal her back to work meeting with managing director Jeremy Morgan ‘started positively’, with Morgan saying he was looking forward to her return.

But she said it ‘came as a shock’ to her boss when she revealed at the end of the sit-down that she was pregnant again.

Ms Twitchen described how her working relationship with Mr Morgan had been ‘very good’ and he was ‘very responsive’ when she needed to speak with him.

When her maternity leave ended in March 2022, nobody from the company got in touch to discuss her return to work.

On April 4, she asked Morgan about holiday entitlement for later in the year but he ‘failed to respond substantively’, which was out of character, the tribunal heard.

Ms Twitchen sent a follow up message on April 11 and again on April 18.

Later that day, Morgan called her to say she was being made redundant because of financial difficulties and delays in some payments to the business.

He later claimed new software was being installed which meant her role ‘would no longer exist’ but Judge Robin Harvard noted that Morgan had made no mention of financial difficulties or redundancy at the February meeting, and in fact had said the business was doing well.

Even in the April phone call he did not mention any new software.

The judge criticised First Grade’s failure to ‘produce any evidence of the alleged financial difficulties or of the new software’ during the court case and at no stage did Ms Twitchen receive a written statement setting out the reasons for her dismissal.

Ms Twitchen noticed that since her dismissal the company had rebranded itself, hired people and invested in vehicles.

The judge said these revelations ‘cast doubt’ on Morgan’s claim that the company was in financial difficulty.

Judge Havard found that Ms Twitchen was dismissed because she was pregnant.

The judge took into account Mr Morgan’s ‘change of attitude’ after learning of the pregnancy, the change in his ‘speed of response’ to messages, and the ‘complete lack of any coherent evidence-based alternative explanation’ despite ample opportunities to provide one.

He ruled the dismissal was unfair, discriminatory, and must have caused Ms Twitchen ‘real anxiety and distress over a period of time, having been dismissed when pregnant and losing her sense of financial security with all the family responsibilities that she had’.

Judge Havard ordered First Grade and Morgan to pay compensation totalling £28,706.

The company, reacting in a statement, said: ‘We are extremely disappointed with the outcome of the tribunal.

‘We are actively reviewing all relevant information and considering all available options. At this point in time we are unable to provide any further comment.’

Zimbabweans seek better healthcare in Zambia amid failing system

0

Shupikai Sithole, a 54-year-old cancer patient, embodies the plight of many Zimbabweans who find themselves in desperate need of adequate healthcare. After receiving insufficient treatment in her home country, Sithole’s family made the difficult decision to cross into Zambia, where they discovered advanced medical facilities, including a computerized cancer diagnosis machine at Mtendere Mission Hospital.

Sithole’s journey highlights the stark contrast between the healthcare systems in Zimbabwe and Zambia. “The day I was diagnosed, my world shattered,” she recalled, fighting back tears. “The healthcare system in my country has been crumbling for years. I went to my local hospital, desperate and terrified, but the overcrowded facility left me feeling even more hopeless. I waited for hours only to be sent home with vague assurances and a prescription for pain relief that I could barely afford.”

Her fortunes changed when a Good Samaritan offered her a glimmer of hope: “We can go to Zambia. They have better facilities there.” Although crossing the border was daunting, the alternative – remaining in Zimbabwe – felt even worse. Upon arriving at Mtendere Mission Hospital, Sithole was greeted by a clean, organized environment equipped with advanced medical technologies. “For the first time in months, I felt like I was in capable hands,” she said, expressing gratitude for the compassionate care she received.

While her treatment in Zambia brought her hope, Sithole remains acutely aware of others like Tom Shiriyedenga, who are still suffering in Zimbabwe. Shiriyedenga’s story is one of tragedy and loss, as he lost his wife due to inadequate medical care. “It’s been months since that fateful day in June when she took her last breath. The pain is still fresh,” he lamented.

Mary, Shiriyedenga’s wife, was involved in a tragic accident in May 2024. “What greeted me at the hospital was a nightmare,” he recalled. “Days turned into weeks as I watched her struggle for her life in a system that seemed to have abandoned her.” Shiriyedenga’s heart-wrenching experience underscores the emotional toll and urgent need for reform in Zimbabwe’s health services.

“I remember pleading with the doctors, but our hospital was overwhelmed and lacked adequate resources. I felt helpless,” he said. After her death, he found himself advocating for change to honor Mary’s memory. “No family should have to make the choice between life and death based on a failing healthcare system,” he stated.

The healthcare crisis in Zimbabwe has been exacerbated by ongoing economic and political challenges, prompting many citizens to seek affordable medical services across the border in Zambia. Mtendere Mission Hospital has become a favored destination for Zimbabwean patients, operating as a non-profit institution under the Zambian Catholic Diocese of Monze, supported by various international organizations.

Itai Rusike, executive director of the Community Working Group on Health, highlighted the dire situation: “Zimbabwe’s health sector suffers from inadequate infrastructure and essential service shortages. Patients face long distances and barriers like insufficient medical supplies.” He called for urgent government action to prioritize health care and address the fundamental challenges facing the sector, reiterating that access to healthcare is a constitutional right for all citizens.

An official from Mtendere Mission Hospital confirmed the influx of Zimbabwean patients: “It’s not a secret that most patients we attend to daily are from across the border.” This trend underscores the broader issue of healthcare accessibility in the region, with some Zimbabweans also seeking treatment in South Africa for quality care.

As the healthcare crisis continues, the stories of individuals like Sithole and Shiriyedenga serve as powerful reminders of the urgent need for reform in Zimbabwe’s health system. The hope is that one day, no one will have to embark on a treacherous journey just to receive basic healthcare. Until that day arrives, many Zimbabweans will continue to seek better options beyond their borders.

Liam Payne spent his final days on earth sending money to poor children in need

0

Late singer, Liam Payne spent his final days on earth sending money to poor children in need.

The One Direction star’s untimely death sent shockwaves in the music world after the 31-year-old fell from a third-floor balcony at his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday.

Following the tragedy, details of his last days have emerged, with the 2010 X Factor star donating to various GoFundMe pages online.

In a series of Snapchat videos, a site Payne was posting on just hours before his death, he shared how much he hated to see the little ones suffering.

One direction star Liam Payne spent final days donating money to sick children

Due to the reason above, he gave thousands of pounds to children causes, explaining how his 7 year old son inspired the act of kindness.

‘I’ve always felt really lucky to be in the position that I’m in and my life aspiration has been to be a superhero… but I can’t fly, I’m not a great mechanic, I wasn’t affected by radiation, and I’m not incredibly strong,’ he began.

‘All I know is there are websites out there for you to be able to donate to sick children that need your help.’

Encouraging fans to show compassion themselves, he continued: ‘It doesn’t matter how small the donation is, or how big the donation is.

‘All that matters is you look into that child’s eyes and you realise… as a father, it hits me slightly differently because I look at them and if that was my child, I would want everyone in the world to just look at me. Please, look at me and help me.

‘The last few nights, I’ve been spending some time on GoFundMe, a fantastic website. I’m not sure about the tip thing, though, guys, you need to work that out, because that’s not right; we should be giving the tips to the kids, man.

‘I’d like to understand more. If anyone from GoFundMe wants to get in touch with me to tell me how this works, I would love to know, but I’ve been going on night by night by night, trying to finish off people’s donations so that they can get the operations they need.’

Payne concluded: ‘It’s despicable that, in 2024, these kids are having to pay for these medical things that would be free in my country.’

The people helped by Payne, included a 28-year-old American man named Jack, who received £2,300 after suffering a stage 4 B-cell lymphoma.

Payne also donated £3,833 to four-year-old Macy Shepard after her diagnosis of stage 2 Wilms tumour on her kidney.

He gave £770 to fund a young girl’s medical bills after she was injured during a shooting and £2,223 went to four-year-old Kailyn after a stroke.

Setback for Ramaphosa as another major retailer in South Africa closes its doors

Jumia Technologies, the Africa-focused e-commerce retailer that operates popular online retailer Zando, says it will be exiting the South African business by the end of the year to sharpen its focus on its other markets.

Speaking to Reuters, the group’s CEO, Francis Dufay, said that it is ‘aggressively cutting costs’ to try to turn profitable, which will include reducing headcount, exiting everyday grocery items and food delivery, and cutting delivery services not related to its e-commerce business.

Zando.co.za was founded in 2012 and has become one of the more popular South African online fashion platforms. However, the Jumia CEO said that South Africa’s environment is highly competitive, which made operating in the country difficult.

The CEO said that the group is not planning to sell the operation, and the site will hold clearance sales before shutting down.

Zando South Africa and Zando Tunisia – another site closing down – only made up 2.7% of total orders and 3% of Gross Merchandise Value in the six months ended June 30, the CEO said.

This marks just the latest business operation in South Africa heading for closure, while others have reported operational difficulties.

In September, South African online retailer Snatcher entered voluntary liquidation.

Snatcher, officially known as DHD Investments T/A Snatcher Deals, was an online retailer that had operated in South Africa for eight years, selling low-cost and off-brand electronics from China.

Earlier in October, popular online fashion retailer Superbalist informed employees that it plans to cut a large percentage of its staff.

BusinessTech received information from people close to Superbalist that the online store plans to retrench around 28% of its workforce.

The retrenchments affect most departments, including engineering, product management, finance, design, buying, and support.

The troubles for businesses are also very clearly present in the brick and mortar space.

Retailer Drip Footwear has entered liquidation, with employees laid off last week.

Drip’s competitor, Cross Trainer, entered business rescue in August this year after facing cash-flow problems from the COVID-19 pandemic and struggling to keep up with operational costs.

Retailer West Pack also sought business rescue in May. The company said that it was financially distressed and unlikely to pay its debts when they became due over the next six months.

SPAR could offer West Pack a lifeline, with a potential acquisition on the cards.

South Africa’s largest privately owned automotive parts retailer and wholesaler, AutoZone, may also receive a lifeline. JSE-listed investment group Metair is reportedly interested in acquiring AutoZone for R290 million.

Autozone entered business rescue in July of this year after performance did not meet expectations following a private equity transaction funded by debt.

Woman who laughed and filmed boyfriend suffocating to d3ath inside suitcase was ‘justified’- lawyer

An American woman who laughed as she filmed her boyfriend suffocating to death was ‘justified in her actions’, a jury was told.

Sarah Boone appeared on Friday, October 18 at a court in Orlando, Florida charged with the second degree murder of her partner Jorge Torres, who was found dead in a suitcase at their apartment in February 2020.

The 46-year-old woman claims the two of them were playing a drunken game of ‘hide and seek’ when Torres, 42, willingly got into the suitcase.

She told police she ended up falling asleep while he was in there and woke in the morning to find him dead.

In his opening statement on Friday, Boone’s defence lawyer, James Owens, said Boone did not mean to kill her partner, but wanted a ‘captive audience’ after he repeatedly abused her throughout their three-year relationship.

He said she was ‘justified in the actions she took’.

Assistant state attorney William Jay, who is prosecuting, said that Boone acted with ‘malicious intent to punish him and then she went up to sleep and left him to take his final breaths on this Earth alone’.

Part of the prosecution’s case is a video filmed by Boone in which Mr Torres can be heard pleading from the suitcase, ‘Sarah, I can’t breath’ a number of times.

Boone, a mum of one, can be he heard giggling and says, ‘For everything you’ve done to me, for everything you’ve done to me. F* you. F* you. Stupid.’

She also compares him struggling to breath with her allegedly being choked by him.

Owen, who is Boone’s ninth defence lawyer after several other resigned due to’irreconcilable differences’, told the jury that both his client and Mr Torres were alcoholics and as ‘down and out as you can be’.

Speaking about the abuse, he said: ‘Jorge Torres physically abused Sarah Boone and she suffered from the effects, the psychological effects that one suffers from repeat violence from an intimate partner.

He described Mr Torres as being jealous of Boone, adding: ‘When his level of intoxication gets to a certain level is when he gets sad, moody and a lot of times eventually it involved forcible sex with Sarah Boone or actual physical violence.’

Explaining how Torres became a ‘captive audience’ in the suitcase, Owens said: ‘Physically, they’re the same size, but he’s much stronger. If they got into a fistfight, he would win 100 times out of 100.

‘But she’s got him down, claims he can’t get up. He has to sit and listen. It’s a unique form of physical restraint. So she lets him have it, says things she shouldn’t say.’

Both Boone and Torres were previously arrested for battery against each other.

The court later heard from Boone’s ex husband Brian Boone, who said she called him drunkenly in the middle of the night.

He said he hadn’t paid much attention to what she was saying as he wanted to get back to sleep and because she’d called him in this drunken state on a number of occasions previously.

But when he phoned the following day to check if she’d be looking after their now 13-year-old son, she told him she’d found Torres dead and asked him to come over.

Boone, who lived close by, advised her to phone emergency services, then got in his car and drove over to the apartment in Winter Park.

He said when he arrived she still hadn’t called police , so he asked her again at which point she did.

She also told him that she and Mr Torres had been playing ‘hide and seek’ and she fell asleep while he was in the suitcase, the court heard.

Mr Boones said he only went in as far as the hallway, at which point he noticed Mr Torres’s feet sticking out in the living room.

He added that he decided to go and wait for the emergency services in the car.

Before the trial begun Boone who is currently being held in jail was offered a plea deal, which would have seen her receive a 15-year prison sentence if she pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

She rejected the deal and will face a minimum sentence is 22-and-a-half years if convicted of second degree murder. The trial continues.

Wicknell Chivayo refuses to pay American consultant

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, known for his extravagant lifestyle and high-profile donations, is currently embroiled in controversy following his refusal to pay US$75,000 to an American consultant, Frederick Griffin. Local news website NewsHaws reported that the payment pertains to a failed consultancy for Chivayo’s ambitious but ultimately botched Starlink project, which aimed to secure exclusive rights to partner with SpaceX’s satellite internet service.

Chivayo, who has gained notoriety for his penchant for luxury cars, designer fashion, and lavish gifts – recently donating a Bentley to a friend and a Toyota Fortuner to Daisy Mtukudzi, widow of the late music legend Oliver Mtukudzi – has come under fire for prioritizing his high-profile donations over fulfilling his financial obligations to business partners and service providers.

Insiders claim that Chivayo’s refusal to settle his debts raises questions about his business practices. Sources indicate that Griffin’s consultancy was pivotal in Chivayo’s plans to partner with Starlink, but those plans unraveled due to the satellite company’s reluctance to engage in what they deemed a “shady business model.” Furthermore, internal conflicts involving Chivayo and other stakeholders, including close associates of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, contributed to the project’s failure.

According to informed sources, President Mnangagwa had publicly supported Chivayo’s bid for the Starlink partnership. However, complications arose when one of the President’s twin sons expressed competing interests in the same project, leading to tensions. Additionally, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa reportedly opposed Chivayo’s efforts behind the scenes, aligning herself with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), which ultimately derailed the deal.

After negotiations, a compromise was reached that required multiple companies, including Chivayo’s, to be licensed, effectively thwarting his plans to dominate the market.

The unfolding situation surrounding Chivayo’s dealings has garnered significant attention, particularly following a lengthy investigation by The NewsHawks. The investigation highlighted Chivayo’s trip to the United States in March, where he sought to solidify the Starlink deal, as well as his involvement in the US$100 million Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) tender scandal. During this scandal, Chivayo allegedly refused to pay his jailed business partners, Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, their rightful shares.

As the controversy continues to swirl around him, questions are being raised about the implications of Chivayo’s business practices and his connections to the ruling party. Critics argue that his lavish spending and megalomaniac donations are overshadowing the pressing financial obligations he has left unfulfilled, further straining his reputation in a country already grappling with economic challenges.

BRICs payment system being tested

A new digital payments system, BRICS Pay, debuted for live testing at this week’s BRICS Business Forum at the International Trade Center in Moscow.

During the trial – on 17 and 18 October – forum attendees could access the BRICS Pay platform in a limited capacity to test out payments for purchases at stores labelled with the BRICS Pay logo.

BRICS Business Forum attendees were issued demo cards preloaded with 500 Rubles, which could be used at various locations within the World Trade Center.

The main method of payment trialled is through QR codes, which aim to connect national payment methods with commercial payment systems in BRICS+ countries. The system operates on blockchain technology and supports digital currencies or stablecoins pegged to the national currencies of member states.

The ultimate vision for the system is cross-border retail support across the BRICS+ bloc. Future plans are to examine business-to-business payments and then develop the BRICS+ UNIT—Russia’s crypto proposition for the bloc.

Despite the payment system being tested, experts predict that full implementation is still years away.

The system’s testing also does not mean that it has launched, nor does it mean that any of the BRICS nations have agreed to formally adopt it. However, it is a significant development on the system’s journey, which has been under discussion and part of BRICS discussions for several years.

The system has been developed to allow for decentralised, ‘apolitical’ cross-border transactions and, ostensibly, to sidestep the global SWIFT system by providing an alternative means to make and finalise payments.

It is an evolution of the idea of establishing a common BRICS currency among participating nations—a concept that has been decisively sidelined by South Africa’s National Treasury and government officials, and criticised by economists and analysts.

Even the unified digital currency has been met with uncertainty in South Africa, with finance minister Enoch Godongwana stating previously that minds are not yet made up about whether to participate.

By its own admission, the consortium behind the UNIT concede that “presently, BRICS+ is not ready to launch its own currency”, but state that “the need for a reliable independent international financial and monetary system is urgent”.

“The UNIT ecosystem offers BRICS+ countries a unique framework, which can fully accommodate the inter-block trade and facilitate mutual investments thus alleviating economic disbalances hindering further integration,” it said.

Russia’s crypto push

Russia has been proposing changes to cross-border payments conducted among BRICS countries to circumvent the global financial system for some time, as the country has been heavily penalised by Western nations for its invasion and war in Ukraine.

The country is now seeking to ‘sanctions-proof’ its own economy.

The alternatives include developing a network of commercial banks that can conduct such transactions in local currencies as well as establishing direct links between central banks, according to a report prepared by the Russian Finance Ministry, the Bank of Russia and Moscow-based consultancy Yakov & Partners.

The “multicurrency system” will need to “ring-fence its participants from any external pressures such as extraterritorial sanctions,” said the report, which also argued that US interests “are not always aligned with the interests of other participants” of the global financial network.

The plan also includes the creation of centres for mutual trade in commodities such as oil, natural gas, grain and gold.

The US and its allies imposed sweeping penalties on Russia after President Vladimir Putin ordered the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

They froze Russia’s foreign assets and kicked major Russian lenders off the SWIFT financial messaging system. In response, Russia has sought to decrease its dependence on the dollar.

Still, other BRICS countries that are not facing the same complications from sanctions have continued to prioritize access to the dollar-based financial system.

Globally, 58% of international payments, excluding those within the euro area, involve the greenback, while the dollar is used in 54% of foreign trade invoices as of 2022, according to the Brookings Institution.

Among the proposals, Russia is pitching the use of distributed ledger technology (DLT) or a new multinational platform to allow settlements with tokens.

“The key advantage of utilizing DLT settlement model is the elimination of the credit risk” accompanying the conventional banking set-up, the report said.

DLT could also reduce processing times and costs because correspondent entities and compliance checks will be absent, saving BRICS countries as much as $15 billion annually if half of all cross-border transfers used such transactions, the report’s authors argued.
