Ndola Mayor condemns Mongu Mayor Nyambe Muyumbana for returning back half of the two-night allowance

0

Ndola Mayor Jones Kalyati has condemned Mongu Mayor Nyambe Muyumbana for returning back half of the two-night allowance from the recent Lusaka special meeting on local authorities chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr. Muyumbana on 17th August, 2022 retired K1, 500 which was part of the daily subsistence allowance after his two-day meeting in Lusaka was cut short.

Some people saluted the Mongu Mayor for the gesture but his Ndola counterpart Mr. Kalyati has questioned whom Mr. Muyumbana wanted to impress by retiring the K1, 500.

The Ndola Mayor said he actually spends more than the council provides as he utilises his trips to Lusaka to lobby development for his city from various ministries.

“I want to mention that actually that the money I was given to go to Lusaka was not even enough. When I am in Lusaka I have got important things to do. He (Muyumbana) does not have anything to do and he must be ashamed of himself. When I finish my meetings in Lusaka I spend more days because I have so much to do with Ministries. The people of Ndola sent me to Lusaka to find out what is going to be done to Ndola roads. You know Ndola roads are so bad, they are pathetic, they are impassable. So I go to Ministries. I go to the Ministry of Local Government, I go to the Ministry of Health, and I go to all ministries,” Mr. Kalyati said.

“I take time to visit these ministries so when they give me three days sometimes I spend five days and I keep funding myself. What is supposed to be done is talk to these ministries so that development can come. An honourable that goes like him he even goes boasting that I have returned a K1, 500, what is a K1, 500 going to do? When I am in Lusaka I go to look for much more money to bring into Ndola. So taking back a K1, 500 is mediocre. It is a lack of thinking. Who do I want to impress by returning a K1, 500? By the way we were given money for three days then someone returned a K1, 500, our meeting ended at 20:00 hours that man left before the meeting was actually concluded. It means he is an absent mayor. It should never happen,” Mr. Kalyati continued.

“People of Ndola I want to assure you that whenever I go to Lusaka. I present all the questions you ask me. I know you ask me questions on the roads, I know you ask me questions on schools, and you ask me questions on every development in the city. I have no time to waste. Those people have every time to waste and that is why he can return the money. I cannot return the money. That is why I need much more money if the council cannot sponsor me. I am coming to reach out to well wishers in the city so that they sponsor my being in Lusaka, so that I can look for what they want. I need to bring food and put it on the table. I am their city father,” he said.

Mr. Kalyati concluded:”I have no time to waste, let them waste time, I will spend time talking to ministries and by the way we were talking to the President (Hakainde Hichilema) when he (Muyumbana) actually ran away. I don’t know what he took back to the people of Mongu. I have got so much coming through to my office and the President gave a very good address. I picked a lot of things I am running with like a baton. “

Meanwhile, concerned citizen Mupishi Jones has asked President Hakainde Hichilema to consider honoring Mr. Muyumbana for being honest.

“What an honest leader! I’m sure even where our Almighty God is sitting on his Holy Throne is happy to have such individuals still surviving especially in Africa and Zambia in particular. This act from the Mayor may appear to be very strange in Zambia because of the past PF regime environment where we’re coming from,” Mr. Mupishi stated.

Zambia has won International Monetary Fund board approval for a $1.3 billion support package, a important step toward the nation restructuring its debt and a boost for the global effort to help indebted developing nations. The IMF said in a statement that the 38-month extended credit facility is based on Zambia’s “homegrown economic reform plan that aims to restore macroeconomic stability and foster higher, more resilient, and more inclusive growth.

IMF Executive Board Approves New Extended Credit Facility (ECF) Arrangement for Zambia
August 31, 2022

● The IMF Board approves SDR 978.2 million (about US$1.3 billion) 38-month ECF arrangement for Zambia to help restore macroeconomic stability and foster higher, more resilient, and more inclusive growth.

● The authorities’ program, supported by the ECF-arrangement, will advance the authorities’ homegrown reform plan to restore debt sustainability, create fiscal space for much-needed social spending, and strengthen economic governance.

● Securing timely restructuring agreements with external creditors will be essential for the successful implementation of the new ECF arrangement.

Washington, DC: The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a 38-month arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) in an amount equivalent to SDR 978.2 million (around US$1.3 billion, or 100 percent of quota). The program is based on the authorities’ homegrown economic reform plan that aims to restore macroeconomic stability and foster higher, more resilient, and more inclusive growth.

Zambia is dealing with the legacy of years of economic mismanagement, with an especially inefficient public investment drive. Growth has been too low to reduce rates of poverty, inequality, and malnutrition that are amongst the highest in the world. Zambia is in debt distress and needs a deep and comprehensive debt treatment to place public debt on a sustainable path.

The ECF-supported program will help reestablish sustainability through fiscal adjustment and debt restructuring, create fiscal space for social spending to cushion the burden of adjustment, and strengthen economic governance, including by improving public financial management. The program will also catalyze much needed financial support from development partners. The Executive Board’s decision will enable an immediate disbursement equivalent to SDR 139.88 million (about US$185 million).

Following the Executive Board discussion on Zambia, Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director, issued the following statement:

“Zambia continues to face profound challenges reflected in high poverty levels and low growth. The ECF-supported program aims to restore macroeconomic stability and foster higher, more resilient, and more inclusive growth.

“Restoring fiscal sustainability will require a sustained fiscal adjustment. The authorities’ adjustment plans appropriately focus on eliminating regressive fuel subsidies, enhancing the efficiency of the agricultural subsidy program, and reducing inefficient public investment. Domestic revenue mobilization also needs to support the medium-term adjustment. The adjustment creates fiscal space for increased social spending to cushion the burden on the most vulnerable, help reduce poverty, and to invest in Zambia’s people. The ongoing expansion of the authorities’ Social Cash Transfer program and their plans to increase public spending on health and education are particularly welcome. Together with the fiscal adjustment, Zambia needs a deep and comprehensive debt treatment under the G20 Common Framework to restore debt sustainability.

A substantial strengthening of fiscal controls is needed to support the fiscal adjustment, as well as address governance and corruption vulnerabilities. Public investment management and procurement practices need to be strengthened to ensure transparency and the efficient use of scarce resources. It will also be important to bolster the framework for monitoring fiscal risks, particularly those related to large state-owned enterprises.

“The Bank of Zambia should continue its efforts to reduce inflation and preserve financial stability. International reserves should be replenished as conditions allow and the exchange rate should continue to reflect market conditions. Addressing high NPL levels and ensuring adequate capital buffers will also be important.”

UK Team Arrive In The Country To Specifically Award Sister Malango For Her Humility And Hardwork

UK TEAM ARRIVE IN THE COUNTRY TO SPECIFICALLY AWARD SISTER MALANGO FOR HER HUMILITY AND HARDWORK.

Congratulations!!!

UTH nurse to receive award for her professionalism in delivering health care to adult patients.

University Teaching Hospitals UTHs Registered Nurse Malango Goma will be awarded by the Zambia Quality Care Team and another team from United Kingdom who Champion Quality Health Care services among Health Professionals from across the world.

The firm is of the belief that Patients are the center of treatment and care and as such Health Professionals need to uphold high standards of Quality Health care.

The award will come bare two weeks after a child to one of the patients Sister Malango attended to at UTH shared their gratitude on Facebook.

The team from United Kingdom saw her story on Facebook and will be around to present the award to sister Malango tomorrow.

Below is the post from former patient’s child.

SISTER MALANGO GOMA OF UTH, LESA AKUPALE NKASHI YANDI

Today I just want to appreciate nurses who are kind hearted.

I remember last month my mother was very sick and was admitted at UTH in E02 ward.

The nurse who welcomed us and began to attend to my mother was an angel in human form.

The way she would care for her patients was in unison, she never discriminated or cared more for those of higher statuses.

But we were all treated exactly the same.
Each time her shift ended I would feel bad, because I looked forward to seeing her more.

I then got to learn her name as sister Malango (in the picture).

This woman would go out of her way just to help even those without relatives. She would joke with patients even those who were not able to talk.

I was amazed that we still have nurses who are kind hearted. The entire E02 nurses are hardworking and really know what it means to be patient centered.

Nurse Malango Goma I want to say keep it up in caring for the patients with the same kind heart of yours. A greater reward is coming your way my nurse.

May God continue to bless you and your family. I know for sure that it is your calling to be a nurse. My mother and I are so happy we got to meet you on that particular day.

God Bless You Nurse, God Bless You Sister. Continue with your humility and hardworkng dear. I pray God Almighty add more good years of your life.

Child to Your Former Patient at UTH in E02 Ward.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang speaks out for the first time since the ‘violent’ burglary that left him with a broken jaw

0

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has spoken out for the first time after a notorious group carried out the terrifying robbery at his family home and left him with a broken jaw.

The Barcelona striker was assaulted by a group of four men who attacked his home and threatened him with firearms and iron bars in front of his wife Alysha Behague and their two terrified children in the early hours of Monday morning 29th of August.

In a post on social media, the former Arsenal star confirmed his jaw was ‘injured’ after being struck on the chin with an iron bar, and said his family ‘no longer feel safe in our own home’.

‘Hey guys, thanks a lot for all the messages,’ he wrote. ‘On Sunday night, some violent cowards broke into our home and threatened my family and my children, just to steal some stuff.

‘They injured my jaw but I will recover in no time, and thank God no one else was physically harmed.

‘The feeling that we are no longer safe in our own home is hard to understand and describe, but as a family, we will overcome this and stand stronger than ever.

‘Thanks for all the support, it really means a lot to us.’

Barcelona has moved Aubameyang and his family into a five-star hotel in the city and offered them psychological counselling following the ordeal.

The thieves escaped with jewels after Aubameyang was forced to open a safe within the property in Castelldefels, a coastal town south of Barcelona.

Aubameyang, 33, was struck on the chin with an iron bar, while Behague suffered a blow to the head, but they decided initally against hospital treatment in order not to further frighten their kids.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang speaks out for the first time since the

The children, Curtys, 11, and Pierre, six – saw their parents held on the ground for an hour while the thieves ransacked the house in the early hours of Monday morning.

Catalan news outlet ARA reported police are looking for the assailants and believe they belong to an organised gang of Kosovar Albanians.

ACC charges and arrests Bowman Lusambo For Electoral Corruption

BOWMAN LUSAMBO ARRESTED FOR ELECTORAL CORRUPTION

The Anti- Corruption Commission Zambia has arrested and charged former Kabushi Constituency Parliamentarian Bowman Lusambo for electoral corruption.

Lusambo has been arrested and charged with four (4) counts of Bribery contrary to Section 81 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016. The offences were committed between 1st April 2021 and 14th August 2021 in Ndola during the August 2021 General Elections campaign period.

The arrest follows the recent ruling of the Constitutional Court which nullified the election of Lusambo as Member of Parliament for Kabushi Constituency for engaging in electoral corruption. Resulting from its decision, the Constitutional Court issued a Report which detailed the electoral malpractices that were perpetrated by Mr. Lusambo.

It is on the strength of this Report that the Anti-Corruption Commission instituted investigations into the alleged malpractices and corruption. The Commission proceeded to record a warn and caution statement from Lusambo and he has subsequently been arrested.

In the first count, Lusambo being a private person namely an aspiring candidate for Kabushi constituency under the Patriotic Front ticket, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, corruptly offered K500 and actually gave K50 each to some United Party for National Development supporters and actually promised K500 each, 2.5 litres of cooking oil and a bag of mealie meal after the elections.

In the second count Lusambo has been arrested and charged for corruptly giving K1,300.00 to youths in Lubuto West to share. In the third count, Lusambo has been arrested and charged for corruptly giving K4,000.00 to youths from Kabushi Ward to share. In the fourth count, Lusambo has been arrested and charged for corruptly giving K300 each to some women of Saint Kizito Catholic Church after attending mass before the elections.

The offences were committed as an inducement or reward for the recipients of the money from Lusambo for them to vote for him and the Patriotic Front Party in the August 12th 2021 general elections.

Lusambo has been released on Bond and is expected to appear in court soon.

Lusambo Arrest By ACC For Electoral Offences: A Peep Into Justice Delivered In Reverse Mode- Peter Sinkamba

LUSAMBO ARREST BY ACC FOR ELECTORAL OFFENCES: A PEEP INTO JUSTICE DELIVERED IN REVERSE MODE

The Anti- Corruption Commission has arrested and charged former Kabushi Constituency MP and aspiring candidate, Bowman Lusambo, for electoral corruption.

Lusambo has been arrested and charged with four (4) counts of Bribery contrary to Section 81 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016. It is alleged that the offences were committed between 1st April 2021 and 14th August 2021 in Ndola during the August 2021 General Elections campaign period.

Lusambo. It is alleged that on the strength of this Report that the Anti-Corruption Commission instituted investigations into the alleged malpractices and corruption and proceeded to record a warn and caution statement from him, and has subsequently been arrested.

A number of mind bogling key questions arise from this new development of justice delivered in reverse mode.

The first question concerns the so called Double Jeopardy Principle which is derived from the Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution. This principle has been adopted in the Constitution of Zambia 1996, by way of Article 18(5), and prohibits anyone from being prosecuted twice for substantially the same crime.

For avoidance of doubt, the relevant part of Article 18 (5) states as follows:

“No person who shows that he has been tried by a competent court for a criminal offence and
either convicted or acquitted shall again be tried for that offence or for any other criminal offence of which he could have been convicted at the trial for that offence, except upon the order of a superior court in the course of appeal or review proceedings relating to the conviction or acquittal.”

In this case, the ACC states in its press statement that “on the strength of this Report (Concourt report) the Anti-Corruption Commission instituted investigations into the alleged malpractices and corruption…” In other words, there was no order of the Concourt but merely a report comprising opinions.

In this regard, several legal questions arise from the Lusambo case. First, was Lusambo tried for breach of the Electoral Code of Conduct? If the answer is yes, the next question is: is the Electoral Code of Conduct a set of laws that comprises criminal offences? If the answer is yes, then the next question arises: did the High Court and Concourt find Lusambo guilty of the alleged alleged Electoral Code of Conduct crimes? If the answer is yes, then won’t the anticipated trial, in the subordinate court, for breach of the Electoral Code of Conduct, be in breach of Article 18(5)?

The second question is: is the report of the Concourt alluded to by the ACC the same as the court order contemplated in Article 18(5)?

The third question is: suppose in the subordinate court, Lusambo is acquitted of all alleged crimes, what happens to the Kabushi parliamentary seat which was rendered vacant for the alleged crimes?

The fourth question is: suppose, after acquittal in the subordinate court, the State appeals to High Court which earlier found him guilty on the same allegations, will justice be genuinely delivered to Lusambo this time around?

IMF Bailout Will End In Tears- Fred Mmembe

NIPANO TULI: IT WILL END IN TEARS

Tonight, their much anticipated IMF program may kick in. Those in power will make a lot of noise about this loan in the days to come. They will sing hymns of self-praise for securing the bailout and attempt to drive out any reasonable voice that warns about the adverse consequences of the deal.

But it is just a matter of time before Zambians realise that there is no future in the past. We have been on this route before and it has not worked for us. It is not the first time Zambia is going to the IMF. UNIP under president Kenneth Kaunda went to the IMF in the 1980s though KK was quick to abandon the Brettonwood institution after they failed to answer his famous question: “are you able to design a program that will not require me to kill my own people?”

The MMD under Frederick Chiluba went to the IMF in the 1990s. The MMD under Levy Mwanawasa went to the IMF in the early 2000s. Where have all these previous IMF deals left Zambia? In a much terrible place. If anything, they have simply exposed our incapacity as a people to govern ourselves. After winning independence on the ground that we can govern ourselves, does it really make sense for us to subcontract the running of our economy to the IMF, to return to the West and ask them to help us govern ourselves? As Simon Kapwepwe would say, Zambia twasebana!

The greatest beneficiaries of IMF bailout programs in Zambia are usually the same forces: Western companies, South African finance capital and the local businessmen connected to those in power. These forces are usually the ones who buy our state-owned enterprises at cheaper rates on the pretext that they are making losses. It will not be different this time. The poor will be hit hard. The workers will be hit hard. There will be retrenchments. It will end in tears.

Companies that even Chiluba refused to privatise under any circumstances such as ZAMTEL and ZESCO are this time likely to be sold to their business associates or the western firms. For years, those in power today told us when they were in opposition that they are very good at business; that the reason why state enterprises make losses is because of political interference from the ruling party and the politicians in power. Now that they are in power themselves, what will be their excuse for selling state enterprises since all they need to do is stop interfering in the operations of ZESCO or ZAMTEL and appoint competent people who can run such companies professionally and like private entities?

We repeat: the lasting solution to Zambia’s economic difficulties does not lie in the IMF. It lies in the collection of fair and adequate revenue from the mining sector for support to secondary industries such as manufacturing. It lies in the development of the arts, a hugely important industry that those in power today have reduced to a footnote in a ministry! It lies in increased state support to agriculture and enhanced food security, but those in power today are quicker to listen to the IMF and remove subsidies on farming inputs even when the US and other Western countries till subsidise their own agriculture industry. It lies in increased state investment to social sectors such as education and health.

And by education, we do not mean free education up to Grade 12. That is a racist colonial policy that was formulated on the premise that Africans only need basic or elementary education, not higher education. Only honorary whites in black skins can continue implementing such stupid policies. By investment in education, we mean free education up to university level because no country in the world has ever developed using primary or secondary school graduates.

We mean adequate funding to public universities to enable them function without disruptions, to afford our researchers the necessary funds they require to conduct research in social sciences and to support their scientific discoveries and technological advances. We have some of the most brilliant scientists in this country at UNZA, CBU and other public universities whose talents are going to waste because of lack of state support towards their research activities. This must shame us all because we have let down these people. We mean the provision of students’ living or meal allowances so that they can learn on full stomachs as opposed to the distractions caused by not knowing where their next meal will come from.

And when we say increased investment in health, we do not mean the employment of security guards and general workers and the designation of these people as ‘health workers’ in order to hoodwink the masses of our people that over 11, 000 ‘health workers’ have been recruited! We mean the training and recruitment of actual HEALTH workers such as doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, dentists and other professionals who finish school with their diplomas and degrees anxious to work and full of hope, only to find themselves at a dead end, with no one listening to their cry for availability to serve their motherland. Many of them consequently leave Zambia to apply their trade elsewhere, at a great loss to us since we are a country that is acutely lacking health workers.

Where will the money for investment in all these sectors come from?, some of you may ask. From fair collection of taxes from the mining sector. Those in power today cannot collect fair revenue from the mining companies because they have given tax breaks to these firms. No wonder the mining companies were saying they could not wait for them to get into power in the run-up to last year’s elections. Mining firms knew that they would only be paying little tax. Zambia’s situation will even be worse now with the passing of Statutory Instrument No.50 of 2022 that offers rebates, refunds and remissions to the mines. With all the noises going on over the two by – elections, many people have understandably missed this SI whose effect is that the poor Zambian masses will, henceforth, be subsidising private mines while being told these are “investments” for their benefits. The cynical cruelty of it all beats the mind.

The SI in question (and we invite readers to read it) simply means that we have in State House (or is it Community House since Statw House is too dilapidated for him?) a generous president who is providing for his supporters such as FQM who will save millions on their announced investment. The implication is damning. If FQM says it is investing US 1.3 billion dollars in Zambia, and half of it is in imports of “capital goods” (mining equipment) it will not pay tax – it will be refunded should it pay as part of the import transactions.

With the capital/labour ratio in mining heavily tilted to capital (all mining investments these days are heavy duty and high tech mining dependent and not labour based), the remaining “investment” will be used on a tiny Zambian workforce in lower and perhaps middle level jobs. Meanwhile, the profits of the shareholders are boosted because input costs are lowered because of these tax “incentives” which are in fact transferred onto the ordinary Zambians as losses from mining operations. In effect, they are government subsidies to finance capital and losses to the Zambians via reduced taxes. The IMF deal is facilitating all this madness, yet these people and their supporters in the Brenthurst Foundation, who are involved in designing a low mining tax policy, want us to cheer them on. Aikona man!

Those in power today cannot collect fair revenue from the mines because they have vested interests in this crucial sector, as they do in the beef industry. All these things will come to light one day and Zambians will know the kind of greedy leaders they are dealing with and supporting blindly. It is important to accept that the mining sector is now heavily reliant on technology and will never again create thousands of jobs as it did previously. The best we can do is to collect a fair share of taxes from our depleting natural wealth or leave the metals underground since they won’t rot. But will those in power listen? No, they only listen to their white friends in the EU, or those from the Brenthurst Foundation. Poor and ordinary Zambians have no voice in this government. To these masses of our people, we have only one request: the next time we say “Zivotele”, please pay attention!

Anyway, let them celebrate their dreadful IMF deal today, whose conditions must be so ghastly that they are too afraid or embarrassed to even publish them. At least those in power today won’t blame anyone for the political fallout that is surely coming as a result of implementing a dreadful IMF deal. Nipano tuli.

MAUREEN NKANDU: My Appointment As ZNBC Director-general And Withdrawal Of The Same

0

MY APPOINTMENT AS ZNBC DIRECTOR-GENERAL AND WITHDRAWAL OF THE SAME.

I received an appointment letter as Director-General of ZNBC, on August 24, 2022.

This was following an interview with a panel of Board members on July 16, which also included the PS Information Mr Kalunga, and a non-Board member Chibamba Kanyama, who said he was on the panel in his capacity as an adviser to the Board.

My appointment letter was signed by the Board Chairperson Mr Jack Kalala and copied to the Minister of Information and Media, Permanent Secretary of the same Ministry, as well as the acting DC – ZNBC, acting Director HR and Admin and Acting Director Finance.

I collected the appointment letter and signed my Contract on August 25, at ZNBC Mass Media Complex, due to start work on 1st September, 2022. I was told that a copy of the contract was to be given to me after the Chairperson had signed all three copies.

I did not hear anything official from ZNBC HR until this afternoon, August 31, when I got a call from someone from the broadcast station saying they had a letter to hand-deliver to me at home. I have received a letter of withdrawal of my appointment as ZNBC Director-General, dated August 30, 2022, signed by the Board Chair with the same individuals copied in as those in the appointment letter.

Reasons given for the withdrawal are stated as “it has been necessitated by non-compliance with the Law on certain aspects of the recruitment process.”

I am perplexed and disappointed, but nonetheless thankful to the Board of Directors for the confidence vested in me, which I strongly believe was based on merit, factored by my solid CV and performance in the three-and-a-half hour interview on July 16.

I am grateful for the opportunity, although it came to nothing.

It is sad that my name has been dragged to the gutters on social media, mainly by those who opposed my appointment. It was not necessary.

As a journalist, born from a family of journalists, I am passionate about media development and keen on improving the standards and quality of journalism not only in Zambia, but in Africa as well. I will continue to strive to do so, for after all this is all I ever wanted to do from my childhood, and it is what I will die doing.

Thank you.

KWACHA OVERPOWERS THE SA RAND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ABOUT 20 YEARS..but DSTV, Shoprite, Pick N Pay, PEP etc are NOT aware

KWACHA OVERPOWERS THE SA RAND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ABOUT 20 YEARS

..but DSTV, Shoprite, Pick N Pay, PEP etc are not aware

By Miles B. Sampa, MP (31.08.2022)

In past years when the Kwacha has operated freely and only influenced by market forces, it has consistently been weaker than the South African Rand. Today the Kwacha hit a 50 years high of 1.1 Rand per K1 or 90 Ngwee per 1 Rand representing a 60% gain in the last one year.

Zambia has continued to have good external sentiments arising from favorable outlook for global Copper demand and progress on the IMF programme. This has made the Kwacha to bully not only the USD (15:1) but all other major currencies namely the British Pounds, Euro and the SA Rand.

It’s the Rand however whose country SA represents the biggest trading partner for Zambia that has been pummeled to pulp. If it was in boxing a towel would have been thrown into the ring.

In June this year and for the first time in modern history, the Kwacha caught up and hit par (1:1) with the Rand. Two months later by end of the end August, the Kwacha is stronger than the Rand by R0.08 or 8 cents . This represents close to a 1 % strength by end of today and 60% gain in the last 12 months.

The Kwacha’s Muzala (fast pace) gain to the Rand is both sweat and ‘chileya’ (Bad) music to ears of majority ordinary Zambians. Sweat because most goods and services they consume are imported from South Africa and means they should become affordable comparatively on a year to year basis. It’s however Chileya music to their ears because the companies or providers and sellers of the goods and services from South Africa have refused to reduce their prices.

In the years when the Kwacha depreciated against the Rand, the same companies were quick to increase their prices. They would do it on a daily basis. “The Rand keeps gaining “ they would say to the the Zambian consumer abeit arrogantly. With the current opposite scenario when “ the Kwacha keeps gaining”, the owners of these companies are Zeee (quite).

I take the liberty to hereby ‘Name & Shame’ these greedy goods and services providers in Zambia managed from South Africa. They are DSTV (Multichoice), Shoprite, Pick N Pay, Game stores, Choppies, Mr Price, PEP stores and many others.

As for Shoprite, I remember them insisting feeding us imported potatoes and onions from South Africa when the exchange rate was in their favour (weak Kwacha). They would even lie that local farmers were failing to supply them specific quality produce for their standards and same could only be found in SA.

I now read in the press in SA that these companies are not reducing prices because the produce they buy from local farmers and suppliers remains expensive as they pay in the local currency (Kwacha). In that case one can argue that Shoprite may aswell continue bringing into Zambia their potatoes and onions if that will make them reduce prices by 60% as gained by the Kwacha against the Rand.

For simplicity, a Zambian now needs 90 Ngwee to buy 1 Rand. May this reflect on all prices for good and services from SA.

As a rider though, there is a twist to the tale due to Inflation differentials of the two Countries that then ignites issues of cost of living or quality of life for citizens. Thats some long article of another day however.

For today our eyes are on the ball. DSTV, Shoprite, Pick N Pay, Mr Price, PEP et al must reduce their prices in Zambia. They must do this soonest on their own otherwise they should be ‘cited’ for ‘obtaining money from Zambian citizens by false pretense’ vis a vis the real value of they goods and services they provide given the very weak Rand against the Kwacha.

CHIPATA PROPHET SAYS ANGEL GABRIEL TOLD HIM TO CALL HH A SATANIST AS COURT JAILS HIM FOR ONE YEAR AND THREE MONTHS FOR DEFAMATION INCLUDING LYING THAT HH HAS SOLD ZAMBIA

Chipata evangelist jailed 15 months for calling HH ‘Satanist’

By Christopher Miti

THE Chipata Magistrates’ Court has sentenced an evangelist to 15 months imprisonment with hard labour for defamation of the President.

Evangelist Benson Tembo defamed President Hakainde Hichilema at Vizenge clinic on May 19, 2022 when he called the Head of State a Satanist in his preaching.

The prosecution called three witnesses, Tembo also called three defence witnesses.

Tembo testified that he was preaching in the mountains after the advent of the pandemic.

He said he was informed by angel Gabriel to reveal the suffering of the people and thae pandemic was not real.

Tembo said he was guided by God and angel Gabriel to preach at Vizenge clinic grounds where he called the President a Satanist in his preaching which was captured on phone by onlookers.

One of the defence witnesses Stephen Tembo said he was there when the accused was preaching at Vizenge clinic and that he was preaching on the pandemic.

When asked by public prosecutor Jeff Mwanabeene whether he heard the accused calling the President a Satanist in his preaching, Tembo said he heard but maintained that he did not defame the President.

Another witness, Dorcas Tembo, said on the material day, the accused was preaching based on the readings of Revelation 13, 14-18.

“The accused was preaching about the pandemic and the last days. He said in the last days there will be a beast bearing [the mark] 666; he mentioned that the Bible forewarned us about the last days. We went to the hospitals, bars, schools and villages to preach and I am the one who was reading the Bible verses,” Dorcas said.

When asked in cross examination whether she was at Vizenge where the accused was even captured on video defaming the President, the witness answered in the affirmative.

Asked whether she heard him say the President sold the country to the Chinese and Americans and that he was a Satanist, the Dorcas said she did not pay attention to that part.

Another defence witness, Ruth Banda, said she was not there on the May 19 when Tembo was preaching at the clinic but only heard about the issue the following day after he was arrested.

When asked to mitigate by principal resident magistrate Boniface Mwala, Tembo said he was the first offender before repeating his defamatory statement.

In his judgment, magistrate Mwala said the convict appeared not to be remorseful as he continued to perpetuate his defamatory statement.

He said the 15-month sentence was with effect from August 30, 2022 which was the judgment day since he was on bail.

Trump ‘likely concealed’ highly classified documents at his home – Justice Department

0

Former US President, Donald Trump may have concealed documents during an FBI search of his property in June, Department of Justice officials say.

US presidents must transfer all of their documents and emails to a government agency called the National Archive – and the FBI is investigating whether Mr Trump improperly handled records by taking them from the White House to Mar-a-Lago after he left office in January 2021.

In a court filing released on Tuesday August 30 ahead of a court hearing Thursday, the department said “efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government’s investigation”.

The Justice department alleged federal agents were “explicitly prohibited” from searching a storage room at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion.

Other records were likely “concealed and removed” from a storage room, the officials said.

In the 54-page filing the Justice Department counterintelligence chief, Jay Bratt, said the FBI were able to recover a number of classified documents that Trump’s team had not handed over, despite previous requests.

“That the FBI, in a matter of hours, recovered twice as many documents with classification markings as the ‘diligent search’ that the former president’s counsel and other representatives had weeks to perform…casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter,” he said.

Further describing the June search, the filing said: “Critically, however, the former president’s counsel explicitly prohibited government personnel from opening or looking inside any of the boxes that remained in the storage room, giving no opportunity for the government to confirm that no documents with classification markings remained.”

Following the June visit, FBI teams searched Trump’s property again in Augus. This search was more brazen and it grabbed headlines.

Bratt added that the “commingling” of Trump’s personal items with classified documents is “relevant evidence of the statutory offenses under investigation”.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and said the items were declassified.

He had been suing for a detailed list of exactly what was taken from his estate, and is asking for the government to return any item which was not in the scope of the search warrant.

But Bratt said that any presidential records seized in the search warrant “belong to the United States, not to the former president”.

Trump’s lawyers have asked that a “neutral” third-party attorney – known as a special master – be brought in to determine whether the seized files are covered by executive privilege, which allows presidents to keep certain communications under wraps.

Indian teen burns to death days after being set on fire by the man whose marriage proposal she turned down

Indian teen burns to death days after being set on fire by the man whose marriage proposal she turned down.
Indian woman Ankita Kumari, 19, lost her life after being doused in petrol and set ablaze by a man whose marriage proposal she had turned down.

Before her untimely death, Ankita was a Hindu student in Class 12 who lived in the Dumka region of the eastern state of Jharkhand.

The suspect, who is reportedly a Muslim man who lives in her community, asked for her hand in marriage. When she declined, he vowed to make her life a misery.

On Tuesday, August 23, the accused carried out his threat by pouring gasoline through Ankita’s room window as she slept at night and setting her ablaze.

She was taken to a hospital right after for treatment, but regrettably, after five days of struggling for her life, she passed away on Sunday, August 28.

Ankita’s final testimony was recorded in a statement, in which she stated the following:

“He called me again around 8pm on Monday and told me that he would kill me if I did not talk to him.

“I informed my father about the threat after which he assured me that he would talk to the man’s family on Tuesday. After having our dinner, we went to sleep. I was sleeping in another room.

“On Tuesday morning, I experienced a sensation of pain on my back and could smell something burning. I found him running away when I opened my eyes.

“I started screaming in pain and went to my father’s room. My parents doused the fire and took me to the hospital.”

Indian teenager dies
Ankita was also videoed while explaining from her hospital bed: “He should die the way I am dying today.”

The Hindu community in India has threatened to hold a protest if the suspect is not brought to justice, and her death has caused a stir there.

Masebo Should Emulate Portugal’s Minister Of Health And Resign- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

MASEBO SHOULD EMULATE PORTUGAL’S MINISTER OF HEALTH AND RESIGN

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Portugal’s Health Minister, Dr. Marta Temido has resigned after a pregnant tourist died while being transfered to a hospital with a maternity wing.

Portugal’s public hospitals have been facing critical shortage of staff and Dr. Temido closed some neonatal units to respond to the shortage of gynecologist and obstetrics.

But the death of one person has shamed the Minister so much that she has chosen to resign.

In Zambia, for one year now, hospitals, clinics, and health centres have faced critical shortages of medicines, medical supplies, utilities and lab reagents.

The Cancer Disease Hospital is in such a terrible mess with lack of medicines and lab reagents and patients are forced to fork-out huge sums of money to facilitate treatment of the loved ones.

Minister of Health Silvia Masebo abolished the procurement unit at the Ministry and transfered the functions to Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency ( ZMMSA) which previously only handled storage and distribution of medicines and medical supplies.

Hospitals and health centres have been forced to buy medicines from the open market using allocated administrative funds.

For ZMMSA, it is now learning the ropes, putting up structures, mechanisms and regulations of procurement of drugs while patients die or are forced to buy their own medicines.

Despite this crisis that has seen untold number of deaths, Hon.Silvia Masebo and her team remain put, but are busy issuing statements after statements justifying the crisis.

It is clear that no one will resign or take responsibility as Portugal’s Minister of Health has done.

You can’t wish shortages of medicines away, it has to be resolved.

Similarly, the Ministry of Community Development is purchasing motorbikes for its officers distributing social-cash transfer to the old and vulnerable in rural areas.

Government intended to spend K9.8million on the procurement of the motorbikes.

This is a normal procurement.

However, in Opposition President Hakainde Hichilema had branded every purchase, every procurement, every construction, and every loan that the Patriotic Front Government did or obtained as corrupt or as deals being conducted by unqualified cadres or those connected to the leadership.

So it is not surprising that recent Government procurements have been subjected to the same standard.

A preliminary scrutiny of the motorbikes purchase immediately exposed that a company without bona-fide business address, was intending to supply motorbikes at K130,000.00 each.

If this tender was awarded to reputable dealers of motorbikes such as Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and others, probably this debate would not have arisen.

So social-media was awash with speculations that the supplier intended to buy cheap motorbikes at K25,000 each at Lusaka’s town centre and supply government at a cost of K130,000 each.

While the Permanent Secretary Angela Kawandami said Kafelix Investments, the company awarded to supply the motorbikes was the best evaluated bid and was actually cheaper, the Minister, Hon. Doreen Mwamba came a few days later that this purchase was a Patriotic Front Government process and she was the Whistleblower against the purchase.

We have seen this similar scape-goating at Ministry of Health where $100million hospital construction deal was about to go down and when it was exposed, the Ministry officials blamed the PF.

It appears the Patriotic Front will continue to be blamed for purchases being done under New Dawn Budget until 2026.

I guess citizens won’t buy these lies anymore.

Similarly, it’s interesting to note and clear high hypocrisy that most fertiliser tender lots at the Ministry of Agriculture, have been given to companies without history of supplying the commodity.

An Audit and consulting firm is among those companies awarded to supply fertilizer.

It must be noted that fertiliser, as a bulk commodity, requires advance piped contracts with manufacturers, and financing mechanisms with local banks.

It is interesting to see if the new firms awarded will pull this off to meet the demands of the 2022/2023 farming season.

But to perpetrate new corruption, the new leaders are determined to even risk the farming season without fertilizer in order to get a quick buck, a slice of the pie.

Has anything changed? It’s the same corruption, if not higher, same dangerous attitude towards public funds as in the past.

It appears that it is an opportunity to loot the treasury while they chase the other thieves….

For our people, they are disappointed, they say politicians are the same, it is Comme ci Comme ça, business as usual, corruption as usual…thieves raiding the treasury while they preach transparency and accountability.

HH has scored a milestone in one year, says Luangeni MP

By Christopher Miti

LUANGENI Independent member of parliament Moses Moyo says President Hakainde Hichilema has given new hope to the poor people in his one year in office.

Analysing the UPND and President Hichilema’s one year in office, Moyo who is also Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly said the government has restored respect to the general citizenry.

“President Hakainde Hichilema has given new hope and respect to the poor and the general citizenry that Zambia is not only for the rich. Zambia is for both the rich and the poor; this has been demonstrated through the civil service recruitment which was done without malice. The recruitment brought a lot of hope to people that upon completion of school one can get employed,” he said. “The government has provided free education, this is not a mean achievement, we can’t trivialise it. Even countries that are known to be doing very well are failing to do that. As an MP for a rural constituency, I think this is a milestone that the President has scored.”

Moyo said what President Hichilema has done to come up with a policy that provides for grants and loans almost at zero interest rate gives hope to the people in rural areas.

“Access to financing when you want to set up a business, it was a challenge for our youths. Now, the youths have got hope that they can still start-up businesses because a platform has been provided through Constituency Development Fund,” Moyo explained. “Again, both the social and business environment that has been created in Zambia is good because business can thrive without disruption because the policies are quite consistent. If you can check the interest rate, the fundamentals the way they are pointing; the exchange rate, our currency has been improving against the major currencies.”

Moyo however complained that those in the manufacturing industry had not been able to pass on the benefits to the consumer.

“My only worry is that the ones that are engaged in the manufacturing industry, they haven’t been so honest because they haven’t been able to pass on the benefits to the consumers. They import their raw materials using the dollar but I don’t know why they don’t adjust the prices to conform with what is obtained on the market,” he said.

And Moyo said the President is promoting cultural and traditional inclusiveness.

He said the Head of State has shown that he wants to unite the country through equitable distribution of resources.

Chakwera’s popularity dips: only 10% strongly approve of him – Afrobarometer

0

A survey by Africa’s research powerhouse, Afrobarometer, has cast darkness on Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera. In the survey conducted earlier this year, Chakwera’s approval ratings have taken a tank with only 9% of Malawians indicating that they strongly approve of Chakwera’s leadership.

According to the survey results published on 30 August 2022, 51.7% of Malawians strongly disapprove of Chakwera. The majority of those who disapprove live in the rural areas.

The survey results have further indicated that 14.9 % of people disapprove of Chakwera’s leadership. This puts the total percentage of people disapproving of Chakwera at 66.6%.

On his side, Chakwera has the approval of at least 29.1% of Malawians as there is 19.2% share of Malawians that approved of his leadership.

A majority of Malawians surveyed revealed that they are mostly concerned with the economy. They also disclosed that the country is heading in a worse direction. They also expressed to have lost trust in the two main parties within the Tonse Alliance: the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM that is led by Vice President Saulos Chilima.

A research analyst speaking with Malawi24 said that while the survey was reflective of Chakwera’s dip in popularity, the results could have been worse had the survey been conducted around this time.

“Chakwera scored a 29% because it was earlier this year. At this point, I doubt if he can get that much. The devaluation has dented him. The electricity situation has made it worse,” said the expert.

Malawi devalued its currency by 25% in July this year. This was said that it would be instrumental in easing the forex shortages that have plagued the nation. However, it only led to an increase in prices of basic goods. The electricity situation has also gotten worse with the country experiencing national blackouts for 3 consecutive days in August this year. Power keeps rationed with areas getting only 8 hours of power in a day.

Lazarus Chakwera came to power after a re-run election in 2020 on the promises of ending corruption, nepotism as well as energising the economy. However, 2 years into his rule, Malawians have started losing hope in him.

Chakwera has gone back on his promises with the excuse that the Russia-Ukraine war has affected his plans.

Catholic Diocese of Ndola Bishop Benjamin Phiri comments on the demolition of over 300 housing structures built on Kasompe Airstrip land in Chingola

Catholic Diocese of Ndola Bishop Benjamin Phiri comments on the demolition of over 300 housing structures built on Kasompe Airstrip land in Chingola.

I was particularly saddened recently when I heard about what happened in Kasompe, Chingola. I was greatly saddened. I did not apportion blame but it is indeed a very sad event.

It is a collection of a series of bad decisions by various stakeholders. The first bad decision was by whoever apportioned land illegally, that was the first bad decision. The second bad decision was for those people who went to buy that land without the papers. That was also a bad decision. The third and concluding bad decision was by those who are responsible in the local authority to decide to erase more than 300 houses at the same time.

They should have consulted further. We should have sat down as stakeholders to find the best way forward. My challenge to you, the women and I know that some of the people in the local government are women; my challenge is when these illegal structures are being put up where are you?

You seem to wake up only when the structure has been finished. You should be able to observe when it is starting and that is what you are paid for. That is your job. For you to wake up only when people have built up and have lived there for many years then that is when you realise that actually they have built in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think that if it was up to me I would start by punishing those for failing to do their work. For an illegality to happen it is because somebody did not do their work his or her somewhere and that is very sad. We hope that the Government is going to do everything possible to ensure that justice is done.

Jumping on board with the different organs of government to solve a problem which you have created yourself is not necessarily a merit; however, justice can still be done.

South Africa’s Ramaphosa lashes xenophobic hospital protests

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday condemned anti-immigrant protests that had prevented foreigners from accessing a hospital in the capital, fuelling concerns about rising xenophobia.

“Acts of lawlessness, intimidation and humiliation directed at foreign nationals, whether they are documented or undocumented, should not be tolerated,” Ramaphosa told parliament in a televised address.

A new anti-immigration movement dubbed Operation Dudula, meaning “push back” in Zulu, has been picketing Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, a township west of Pretoria.

Protesters have blocked patients on the basis of skin colour and language, infringing on basic rights, the government said in a separate statement.

Their actions “go against the tenets of our hard fought for democracy,” it said, referring to the struggle against apartheid — a system that brutally divided the country along the lines of race.

Ramaphosa maintained that South Africans were not “xenophobic” but “quite welcoming.”

But he added that law enforcement and security forces were carrying out operations to deal with the issue of illegal migration.

The protestors blame long waits and poor service in the public health sector on strains caused by an influx of foreign migrants.

Their action follows a viral video of provincial health minister Dr Phophi Ramathuba berating a Zimbabwean patient, accusing her of seeking treatment at a government hospital at the expense of South Africans.

Medical care at public hospitals in South Africa is free, but the costs are borne by payroll and other taxes.

The Zimbabwean embassy in Pretoria then issued a statement saying its officials watched “with shock and disbelief” how the patient was treated by the minister.

Hostility towards foreign patients has been “intensifying” since Ramathuba’s remarks became public this month, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said last week.

Around four million foreigners live in South Africa according to official estimates, but the government has no reliable figures as to how many do not have valid papers.

The picket line at the hospital has been filtering people with darker skins — a tactic seemingly aimed at Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Nigerians — and then asking them to speak in a local language or dialect.

The protest group, Operation Dudula, was formed in January.

South Africa has been swept by waves of anti-foreigner sentiment that have led to violent, and at times deadly, attacks on immigrants.

In April, Elvis Nyathi, a 44-year-old Zimbabwean, was burned alive in a township north of Johannesburg, where police said militants went banging on doors demanding to see residents’ visas.

In 2008, 62 people were killed in anti-immigrant riots. Other bouts of violence erupted 2015, 2016 and again in 2019.

A major source of anti-foreigner sentiment is South Africa’s sickly economy. More than a third of the workforce is jobless, with young people hardest hit. AFP

“Don’t act like you aren’t” Mariah Carey calls Meghan Markle a “diva” in new podcast

0

Mariah Carey was a guest on Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast and the singer told the Duchess of Sussex that she has “diva moments”.

In Tuesday’s episode, Markle, 41, and Mariah Carey, 53, had a conversation about the word “diva” and how it has a negative connotation when describing women. At one point, Markle described how the term has become a significant part of Carey’s image.

Meghan said she does not personally “connect to” the “diva persona” but Mariah Carey interrupted and told her that she has diva moments.

Meghan was saying: “… I think that’s really important for people to remember that there might be this persona. And yes, the diva thing we can play into. I mean, it’s not something I connect to. But, it, for you it’s been a huge part of your…”

Mariah then interrupted, saying to Meghan: “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan.”

Meghan appeared flustered, asking, “I do? What kind of diva moments did I give you?”

“Don’t even act like – don’t like,” Carey responded.

“See that’s the thing, I associate it differently,” Markle later said

Carey then clarified that she meant Markle’s “visual[s]” and not her personality. She added that she “didn’t mean” anything by the comment and was “playing” with the former actress.

Mariah Carey said: “I know, but let’s pretend that you didn’t – weren’t so beautiful and didn’t have the whole thing and didn’t often have gorgeous ensembles. You wouldn’t get, maybe get as much diva stuff. I don’t care. I’m like, ‘When I can, I’m going to give you diva.'”

Later in the podcast, Markle reflected on how Carey’s statement initially made her “sweat”.

Meghan explained: “So though my fan-girling was tempered today, I um, I kind of think she could tell… But that aside, it was all going swimmingly, I mean really well. Until that moment happened, which I don’t know about you, but it stopped me in my tracks… when she called me a diva!

“You couldn’t see me, obviously, but I, I started to sweat a little bit. I started squirming in my chair in this quiet revolt, like, wait, wait, no, what? How? But? How could you? That’s not true, that’s not… Why would you say that? My mind genuinely was just spinning with what nonsense she must have read or clicked on to make her say that. I just kept thinking, in that moment, was my girl crush coming to a quick demise? Does she actually not see me?”

Markle said Carey quickly clarified what she meant, which then put her at ease.

Meghan Markle said: “She must have felt my nervous laughter, and you all would’ve heard it too. And she jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear. When she said ‘diva,’ she was talking about the way that I dress, the posture, the clothing, the ‘fabulousness’ as she sees it. She meant diva as a compliment. But I heard it as a dig. I heard it as the word ‘diva,’ as I think of it.”

Meghan continued: “But, in that moment, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as aspirational. And how one very charged word can mean something different for each of us, it’s mind-blowing to me. And it actually made me realize that in these episodes, as I’ve opened the door for conversation surrounding the archetypes that try to hold us back, what I hadn’t considered was that for some, reclaiming the words is what they feel will propel us forward.”

Actor Alec Baldwin sued for $25million by family of Marine killed in Kabul airport bombing

0

The family of a US marine killed in Afghanistan in 2021 are suing actor Alec Baldwin for at least $25 million, claiming he exposed them to online backlash after the actor accused one of the women of attending the Capitol riot.

This is the third time the family of Rylee McCollum, the fallen soldier, has attempted to take action against the star. The previous lawsuits have been dismissed due to errors in the filing process.

The new federal suit was filed in the Southern District of New York on Friday by the family of Marine Lance Corporal Rylee J. McCollum, who was one of 13 marines killed by a suicide bomber outside of the Hamid Karzai International Airport on Aug. 26, 2021. He was 20 years old.

After McCollum’s death, Baldwin found one of Marine’s sisters, Roice, on Instagram and sent her a check for $5,000 for his widow, Jiennah, and her newborn baby. Baldwin said the check was a “tribute to a fallen soldier,’ according to the lawsuit.

Months later in January 2022, the “30 Rock” star got in a public spat with Roice after she posted a photo of herself attending a protest near the Washington Monument on Jan. 6, 2021 ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Capitol Hill riot.

In response, Baldwin accused her of participating in the riots and called her an “insurrectionist.”

His “seemingly benevolent overtures turned into a nightmare,” for the McCollum family, the suit alleges.

“Are you the same woman I sent the $ for your sister’s husband who was killed during the Afghanistan exit?” Baldwin wrote on Roice’s Instagram post from his account, according to the complaint.

He also allegedly sent her a direct message.

“When I sent the $ for your late brother, out of real respect for his service to this country, I didn’t know you were a January 6th rioter,” the actor wrote, according to the suit.

“Protesting is perfectly legal in the country and I’ve already had my sit down with the FBI. Thanks, have a nice day!” Roice shot back.

“I don’t think so,” Baldwin responded. “Your activities resulted in the unlawful destruction of government property, the death of a law enforcement officer, an assault on the certification of the presidential election. I reposted your photo. Good luck.”

He reposted Roice’s photo on his Instagram account, which has 2.4 million followers, mentioning her involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, protests, according to the complaint.

Within 20 minutes of reposting the photo, Roice received “hostile, aggressive, hateful messages” from Baldwin’s fans, the suit claims.

He additionally misidentified Jiennah as an insurrectionist in an Instagram comment, although she was not in DC that day, according to the lawsuit.

Jiennah, Roice, and her sister Cheyenne received messages from Instagram users accusing them of being white supremacists, and likening them to Nazis, the suit says. Some demanded that she give Baldwin back the $5,000 he had given her.

The family alleges that Baldwin did nothing to stop his millions of followers from contacting them.

“Baldwin’s conduct was negligent and reckless as he should have known that making the allegations he did against Plaintiffs to his millions of followers would cause Plaintiffs harm,” the suit states.

The family members have demanded a trial by jury and are seeking damages of at least $25 million for alleged invasion of privacy, defamation negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

SDA CHURCH CAMP ACCIDENT GOES TO COURT

SDA CHURCH CAMP ACCIDENT GOES TO COURT

MOTHERS silently shed tears while fathers tried hard not to drop a tear as a survivor of the Seventh Day Adventist Siavonga camping incident that claimed six young lives narrated how they struggled to swim ashore on Lake Kariba.

Cornelius Chileshe, 21, whose elder brother, Rodwell, was among the six victims who drowned testified that the Coxswain of a fishing rig continued to sail into the deep waters of Lake Kariba despite people panicking and jumping off.

This is a matter in which coxswain Jonathan Haajaya, Osborn Mambo and Tyson Hachiyako are facing a charge of manslaughter.

On January 1, 2022, six SDA members drowned on Lake Kariba after they allegedly jumped off the fishing rig, which Haajaya was in charge of.

Testifying before Lusaka High Court Judge Kenneth Mulife, Chileshe narrated that he and the friends decided to go swimming at the harbour although without the permission of the district presidents.

He said they found other church members also swimming at the lake and joined them to play games.

“At around 15 to 16 hours, a big boat used for fishing kapenta arrived and docked by the edge of the lake where those from SDA Church where swimming. It was there for about 20 minutes. The church congregants went into the same boat to play. They would do summersaults from the boat into the water. We used it as a flat surface to jump into the water,” he said.

Chileshe said after about 20 minutes, the coxswain started the engine while people were still on the boat which resulted into panic and they started to jump into the water.

“The coxswain saw the people jumping into the water, but he or the other two crew members didn’t say anything. When the boat reached where there was a bacon, myself, Zebron and John that’s when we jumped off the boat about 20 meters in depth,” he said

“We jumped off the boat because there was a lot of panic and didn’t know where the boat was headed to. As we jumped into the water, I and my friends struggled to swim because the boat had reached the deep waters,” he added.

In cross examination, Chileshe admitted that they sneaked out of the camp to swim, thus did not have the blessings of their leaders.

He also admitted that they jumped into the rig boat without the permission of the crew members.

The prosecution team who include Counsels Victor Chongo, Ms Chisomo Mtolo Sikanyika and Ms Ottiliah Muhwende is expected to close the case on Thursday.

The six are Goodson Hamaila, Rodwell Chileshe, Ronald Libuku, Zebron Shikambo, Niza Muchiliba and Allan Mwaanga of Lusaka.

CHIENGI: The Capital of Witchcraft

CHIENGI: The Capital of Witchcraft

The Legend of Chiengi Charlie (CHALI)

In the days of Northern Rhodesia, Chiengi was the only Boma closed down because of witchcraft. The territorial officers knew where it was but no one wanted to be posted there.

Chiengi District is right at the north-eastern tip of Zambia on Lake Mweru, bordering Congo DR. It is inhabited by the Bwile people.

In Luapula and Northern Provinces, Chiengi and Mununga have a diabolical reputation of harbouring the most powerful witches, wizards and sorcerers and evil little demons called utuyebela and utumbuma which take up residence in homes spreading nightmares and mischief. Witchcraft, superstition and the supernatural are commonplace.

The wizards and witches of both Mununga and Chiengi are renowned nationwide and considered the most powerful. There is a saying that if you cross a Chiengi native, you will see the buttocks of a snake.

The number of outsiders who died in mysterious circumstances in Chiengi is numerous. In recorded history the first to die after passing through Chiengi was Portuguese explorer and doctor, Francisco de Lacerda.

He is reputed to have become sick in Chiengi before dying in mysterious circumstances in 1798 in Kazembe’s kingdom south of Chiengi. In the district lies the feared village of Mununga coined the heardquarters of witchcraft. Legend has it that the most powerful witches and wizards in the region have an annual coven once a year at the equinox at midnight.

They arrive on air-born reed mats, woven winnowing baskets, broomsticks, on the backs of owls and bats or simply materialise. They bring many wares of the magic kind to sell. If you have an enemy you want to fix, you can buy a bolt of lightning to strike your enemy, an assassin killer bee which can be sent to your foe in an envelope, a bat, owl or cat to spy on your enemies no matter how far they are and protective charms, popular with thieves and bandits who believe the charms make them invisible to their victims and the police and render them invicible to bullets.

The evidence of this belief in protective charms is always found by C5 when they gun down bandits. They have been found adorned with charms and tattoos. You can also buy a hex to put on your rival (popular with women) British Colonial records documented many of the mysterious occurences.

Chiengi, the ‘haunted boma’ on Lake Mweru, gained an evil reputation after many unexplained deaths, trauma and madness.

Chiengi was first established as a Boma by the British in 1895 when Sir Harry Johnstone, based in Based in Blantyre sent two agents, Kidd and Bainbridge to create a fort to strengthen British presence in the area and keep the Belgians out.

Kidd and Bainbridge died in mysterious circumstances. They were rumoured to have been cursed by a wizard they offended but most likely were poisoned.

Kalungwishi boma was built over their graves and villagers reported seeing white spooks there.

One man after another kept dying not only of illness but also in mysterious circumstances. As a result the Boma was closed down during World War 1 between 1914 and 1918. It was reopened after the war and and again Chiengi began claiming “Bwana Victims.” At least two had nervous breakdowns.

-A newly appointed District commissioner, Reardon and his wife went insane and were shipped of to an asylum. It was rumoured that they had a dispute with a local chief who bewitched them.

– In 1927, GH Morton, another DC, reported seeing ghosts. He displayed madness and was sent to a Cape Town asylum.

-His replacement in 1929, GH Hoare, fell seriously ill and died delirious with blackwater fever screaming of ghosts.

District commissioners who were sent there kept dying.

After all the deaths, nervous breakdowns and madness they closed Chiengi for good. The official report put all the casualties down to malaria and blackwater fever. Chiengi was only reopened as a district in 1996 after 63 years. A sub-boma had been opened in 1973.

From 1900 to 1909 a ferocious man-eating lion named Chiengi Charlie with half a tail unleashed a wave of terror in the district. It was possibly an albino lion because the locals called it “the White Lion”.

This lion terrorised Chiengi and the hinterland near Lake Mweru in the decade between1900 and 1910.

The locals insisted it was inhabited by an evil spirit because of its cunning and apparent intelligence. Even the most experienced great white hunters failed to kill Chiengi Charlie and a legend was born. For a long time, attempts to hunt down Charlie failed. On one occasion he leapt into the courtyard of Sealy, the District Officer’s house, but escaped before Sealy could get in a shot.

Efforts to bring Chiengi Charlie’s reign of terror to an end intensified with villagers sleeping around fires and keeping watch all night and yet Chiengi Charlie just kept on killing and mauling. The lion was stealthy, fast and fearless and broke through the thatched roofs or mud walls, smashed down doors and on occasion simply walked straight into huts with open doors during the day.

Eventually, Chiengi Charlie was joined by two other lions and the mayhem they caused almost threatened to destroy the local fishing trade. Many villagers fled the district. It was reported to have killed and eaten over 100 people in one year including the gunbearer of a white hunter who he savagely mauled before killing his servant.

Only one person successfully fought off Chiengi Charlie and was in turn regarded with awe. A woman was sleeping in her hut when Charlie smashed his way in. With great bravery she picked up a burning fire brand and whacked Charlie in the face. He turned on his half tail and fled.

Eventually a professional hunting team of British and Belgians backed by villagers managed to corner Charlie and shot him dead with the villagers spearing him for good measure. His two sidekicks vanished, never to be seen again. When the hunters talked to the villagers they discovered that he was actually not Charlie but CHALI.

The British administrators had mispronounced the name. It was believed that Chiengi Charlie harboured the restless spirit of an evil wizard called CHALI who had been killed by villagers a long time ago.

In 2019, five youths, members of a football team, were clearing a field when they were struck dead by a bolt of lighting. There were whispers that they’d disturbed the resting place of a wizard so he zapped them. Any unexplained death is blamed on witchcraft. The western world has occult. Africa has witchcraft. “Same difference.”🙈

There is a witch craft museum at Mwansabombwe. Strange happenings have been reported by some people who have visited it. One journalist claimed that all the pictures he took inside the museum turned up blank.

Much of the stories of witchcraft are intertwined with a deep belief in the dark underworld and many myths have sprung from that to this day. Present day Chiengi is a beautiful rural district which belies it’s dark past. Underneath the serene surface by Lake Mweru, beliefs still simmer.

People don’t talk about witchcraft openly and most believe in Christianity. They can go to church in the morning, take their children to the modern clinic but furtively visit a witchdoctor or traditional healer under cover of the night.

People have their personal beliefs. People still come from far and wide to buy a bolt of lightning⚡, an assassin bee🐝, a spy owl🦉, bat 🦇, or cat😾,

I am very happy that the Constitution PF enacted is haunting them- Elvis Nkandu

CONSTITUTION HAUNTING PF – NKANDU

By Darious Kapembwa in Kitwe

UPND campaign manager for the September 25 by-election Elvis Nkandu says Joseph Malanji and Bowman Lusambo have disqualified themselves from the election because they enacted the Constitution without reading it.

And Nkandu who is Kaputa UPND member of parliament and Youth, Sport and Arts minister said former president Edgar Lungu disregarded the sacredness of the Constitution when he declared that he would sign it with his eyes closed.

He said several distinguished personalities like Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda cautioned Lungu against such but he ignored.

“I am very happy that the Constitution they enacted is haunting them. I am very happy. In fact I will be very happy if it continues haunting them until they die so that they begin to take reading in parliament seriously,” he said. “The law for the grade 12 certificate was voted for by Malanji, it was voted for and enacted by him and the PF, it’s not the UPND so how can it become our problem? I remember when Edgar Lungu was displaying the Constitution at Heroes stadium, ‘can I sign this’? And they were shouting, ‘yes, yes, yes’! So, they caused this by-election by voting for that Constitution. The UPND has not made any law, we are just one year in government; we have not created any law. If someone is barred by the laws they created, how can they cry foul? That’s why I am very happy that they are being haunted by the law they created. That article 72 (4) was sneaked into the Constitution by them, it is law that was enacted by themselves.”

He charged that there was too much neglect of public infrastructure in Kwacha constituency especially water installations in Kwacha ward which had a lot of leakages which he said Malanji should have attended to rather than giving hand-outs.

“You see, there are a lot of challenges in Kwacha which the former member of parliament should have addressed. And the people of Kwacha are clever, they know that those hand-outs have a short lifespan that’s why we are telling them about opportunities that exist in the expanded CDF allocation,” Nkandu said.

Nkandu, one of the best grassroots mobilisers, allayed assertions that the UPND were afraid of losing to Malanji hence subjecting him to legal battles.

Nkandu said the former ruling party members were rejected way back and have just been hanging on since 2015.

“Afraid of what? Fear who? To me PF was rejected in 2015 and had been hanging on power all along until a popular revolt tossed them out in 2021. And President Hichilema and the new dawn are correcting the many wrongs. In fact the people will now know the extent of their theft, the extent of their damage to the economy. We can’t fear people that stole people’s money. And the people know that we are addressing those issues. The PF has no muscle to win any political battles on the grassroots,” he said further. “He (Malanji) insulted voters by saying politics is not for paupers, but he is asking the same paupers to vote for him. This is typical of PF and the same money they are being given is theirs. Again, I am happy that the money is now reaching them, the money they stole is now getting to them.”

Nkandu said the ruling party has shown the people that it will do more for them based on what government has achieved in the last one year in areas of employment creation, respect for human rights and the exercise of fundamental freedoms.

MALANJI, LUSAMBO ELIGIBLE TO RE-CONTEST – CHIFUMU BANDA
….due process of the law was not followed

Lusaka, Tuesday, August 30, 2022 (Nation Reporter)

JOE Malanji and Bowman Lusambo are eligible to stand because the Constitutional Court did not summon the two to appear before them to show cause why they should not be named and reported to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) after nullifying the seats, says lawyer, Chifumu Banda.

Mr. Banda said what was also not clear was whether the Constitutional Court prepared a report after giving Mr. Malanji and Lusambo chance to show cause as provided for in section 108 subsection 6 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016.

And it has been confirmed that the Constitutional Court has not summoned the two to appear before them to show cause why they should not be named and reported to the ECZ and the DPP has not been prepared to that effect.

Mr. Banda said in an interview that the decision by the ECZ to reject the nomination papers of Mr Malanji and Mr Lusambo was illegal because they didn’t receive a report from the court as provised for under the Electoral Process Act.

He said the provision of the constitution in Article 72 (4) Amendment Act No. 2 of 2016 which the ECZ relied upon in rejecting the nomination papers of the two only comes into play if the provisions of the Electoral Process Act have been complied with.

“Am in full agreement with the statement that the Law Association of Zambia President issued on the question of nullification of the parliamentary seats and disqualification of the culprits from contesting subsequent election because section 108 of the Electoral Process Act didn’t come into play,” he said.

Mr. Banda said the section 108 subsection 6 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016 demands that after the alleged culprits have been found of having committed illegal or corrupt practices they should be given an opportunity to show cause why they should not be reported by the courts that handed down the decision to nullify the seats to the ECZ and DPP. – Daily Nation Zambia

ECZ offside on Malanji and Lusambo- Sishuwa Sishuwa

0

Respected Historian and Political Analyst Sishuwa Sishuwa has charged that the Electoral Commission of Zambia was wrong to have refused to accept nomination papers from Joseph Malanji and Bowman Lusambo as PF candidates for Kwacha and Kabushi Constituency respectively.

Dr Sishuwa noted that the ECZ made a mistake by issuing a mistake on the eve of nomination day that they will reject the nomination papers of the duo even before they filed in.

Dr. Sishuwa was speaking in an interview on the Red Hot Breakfast Show on Hot FM on Monday morning.

Asked to comment on the issue of the two by elections, Dr Sishuwa stated, “There are two separate issues here that we have to deal with, one is on the question of procedure and the other one is on the question of substantive.”

“On the procedure part, the ECZ made a mistake by issuing a statement to say that candidates or have done this or that will have their nominations rejected, if you read Article 52 of the Constitution, the power to reject the nomination of any candidate is vested in the Returning Officer after the candidate has presented his papers to the ECZ on the day of nomination because when the ECZ issued that statement, there was no way of knowing who would be the candidates, so it was wrong for them to actually do that because they ceased to be an impartial body,” he said.

Dr Sishuwa added, “They should have waited for the Returning Officer who had seen the nomination papers for Lusambo and Malanji and then reject them if they need to but that didn’t happen so on the procedure part, I think the ECZ was wrong.”

Dr Sishuwa further stated that the Constitutional Court had earlier in March ruled that the two candidates were eligible to recontest their seats.

“On the substantive part, I think the matter is before court so we are restrained on commenting on this matter but there was a judgement in the Constitutional Court which was issued in think in March this year to the effect that both Malanji and Lusambo or candidates in their positions are eligible to contest unless the Constitutional Court vacates that judgement, the ECZ is bound by that judgement as well. It would be interesting to see what the ECZ or the Constitutional Court does in relation to these cases that have been filed.”

Grandpa walks out on 50-year old girlfriend after cohabiting for 2 years

AFTER promising his 50-year old girlfriend marriage and convincing her to move in with him, a 72-year-old grandfather of Lusaka has run away from his lover after two solid years of cohabiting.

Now, all that is left is his heartbroken elderly girlfriend and sweet memories of their affair which instead draw tears from her aging eyes.

According to reports, it was love at first sight, when Pearson Chipuma staying in the fringes of Lusaka North met Jennifer Chulu slightly over two years ago.

Not one to let a beautiful woman get away, Chipuma immediately launched his attack, summoned his charm and sweet talked himself into Jennifer’s heart.

Cautious of the cassanova nature of men in the nation’s capital, the blushing Jennifer told her charming admirer that she was not interested in games but wanted marriage.

Determined to win her, Chipuma told Jennifer that he too was actually interested in marriage and that if she moved in with him, he would send a delegation of lobola negotiators to her people.

Against her better judgement and convinced that she had found the man of her life, Jennifer moved in with Chipuma.

With love in the air, Jennifer did not notice how days turned into weeks and weeks into months with no wedding arrangements anywhere in sight.

It is only a fortnight ago when Chipuma walked out on her that she noticed that they had stayed together for two years.

Eager to return her man to their house, Jennifer petitioned the Lusaka Boma Local Court to reconcile her with Chipuma.

But instead of ordering Chipuma back to her warm embrace, the court gave Jennifer a long lecture about the difference between a wife and a girlfriend.

Senior Local Court Justice Monya Ng’andwe informed Jennifer that the court could not reconcile to Chipuma because there was no marriage between them.

Chipuma himself expressed shock that a woman who was his girlfriend could bring him to court claiming to be his wife.

He told the court that he left home last week because he was now moving on.

Ndola man divorces pastor wife for frequenting mountain prayers at the expense of their marriage

0

“I DO not understand why she agreed to be ordained as a pastor and pretends to people while our marriage is falling apart,” a Ndola man has cried before the Kabushi local court in Ndola.

Bright Sinkala took his wife Pastor Grace Musende to court seeking divorce stating that she has neglected their marriage, but instead frequents mountain visits for prayer.

However, in her defence, Pastor Musende told court that it was infact Sinkala who has caused their marriage to fall apart because he could not keep his pants zipped and has since found a girlfriend whom he has built a house for.

Sinkala during his testimony revealed that he and his wife have not been physically intimate for the past nine-years and yet they live under one roof.

He told court that all was well with him and his wife , not until she started frequenting mountains prayers, leaving house duties unattended to.

Sinkala told court that at one point his wife came home late from the mountains and so he had locked her outside.

He said that he then left her to sleep on the veranda, but that the the next day she organised her relatives to talk to him.

“I was not interested in the meeting because I was not interested. I lost affection for her. When her relatives came, I overheard her telling them that I was a drunkard who was weak when it came to sex. She even told me point blank that I am not man enough and that hurt me,” he said.

Sinkala further told court that his wife stopped washing and cooking for him and that he had been doing things on his own for many years.

However, Musende told court that she and Sinkala used to enjoy praying together, not until he went and ate of another ‘fruit.’

“How can I be cooking for a man who does not eat my food? He has already shifted with all his clothes. And I agree with him, for the past nine years he has not made love to me because he has found another woman,” she said.

She said Sinkala was not working , but the moment he got a job, he got a girlfriend who he would frequent Nakonde with to do business trips.

She narrated to court that she tried to dialogue with her husband for the sake of the children on many occasions, but he had made up his mind to be with the other woman he had found.

“My husband was the one that introduced me to church as he was a very powerful elder and we served the Lord together, but upon finding another woman, he changed completely. For the last three months he has even been sleeping on the couch,” she said.

Passing judgement Kabushi local court Presiding senior Magistrate John Kabwe sitting with senior Magistrate Emelda Masuwa granted Divorce because reconciliation had failed.

Paul Pogba ‘paid £85k to extortionists who were demanding £11m as part of long-running blackmail plot’ allegedly organised by his brother and friends’

0

Juventus superstar, Paul Pogba reportedly paid £85,000 (€100,000) to his extortionists who were demanding £11million after they dragged him to a Paris apartment in March and threatened him with assault rifles in part of an alleged plot to blackmail him.

The 29-year-old, who has won the World Cup with France, said the men wanted the money for ‘protection services’ stretching back 13 years, including for the time he spent in Manchester.

Pogba claims two armed men said they ‘protected him discreetly’ during a period that spanned more than a decade, including during two spells at Manchester United, the last of which ended earlier this year.

Reports from French news outlet RMC are claiming that Pogba paid around £85,000 in a bid to ‘save time’ and ‘satisfy the extortionists’ but his attempts saw those plotting against him demand the £11m again.

The allegations came after Pogba’s brother Mathias published a bizarre video online on Saturday night – in four languages (French, Italian, English, and Spanish), promising ‘great revelations’ about the Juventus star.

A statement signed by his lawyers, his mother Yeo Moriba, and current agent Rafaela Pimenta said that the videos ‘are unfortunately no surprise’ and were in addition to other ‘threats and extortion attempts’.

Judicial sources in Paris confirmed on Sunday that an investigation for ‘attempted extortion in an organised gang’ has been opened. On Sunday night a source close to the case told the Franceinfo news outlet that Pogba’s ‘big brother and childhood friends’ are all named as suspects.

But on Sunday night, Mathias, who had spells in English football at Wrexham, Crewe, and Crawley Town denied the claims from his brother

He wrote: ‘Paul, you really wanted to shut me up completely to lie and send me to prison, I suspected it now it’s true, my version of the facts happens and unlike you.’

Pogba concluded his video by referencing Kylian Mbappe, declaring he has ‘important things’ to say about the 23-year-old.

‘I will tell you very important things about him and there will be elements and many testimonies to confirm my words,’ Pogba said of Mbappe. ‘Everything could be explosive and make a lot of noise.’

However, Paul Pogba has claimed there is no story surrounding Mbappe despite his brother’s claims.

Paul Pogba’s lawyers, Yeo Moriba, who is also his mother, and Pimenta have since responded to Mathias’s threats.

‘Mathias Pogba’s recent statements on social networks are unfortunately not a surprise,’ they said. ‘They are in addition to threats and organised extortion attempts against Paul Pogba.’

On Sunday night, a judicial source said: ‘During various hearings, Paul Pogba was able to confide in investigators from the Central Office of Judicial Police Combating Organised Crime that he was trapped by childhood friends, and two hooded men armed with assault rifles.

Pogba said the gang wanted €13m the equivalent of £11m and had been threatening him for four months.

Acts of intimidation were carried out in Manchester in April, and later around the Italian city of Turin, where Pogba currently plays for Juventus.

The gang is also said to have taken Pogba to flat in the Paris suburb of Lagny-sur-Marne, where Pogba grew up, at the end of March. While he was being held, the gang members accused Pogba of not helping them financially since he became a professional player.

During police interviews, Paul Pogba said he had always been close to his childhood friends and helped them out financially when he could.

But in January he kicked one out of his house in Manchester after discovering that the unidentified man had used Pogba’s credit card to steal €200,000 – the equivalent of £170,000.

The French prosecutor confirmed to Reuters that an investigation was underway. ‘I confirm that an investigation was opened on 3 August 2022 on the charge of attempted extortion by an organised criminal gang. The investigations have been entrusted to the OCLCO,’ the prosecutor’s office said.

The OCLCO is a unit within the judicial police tasked with investigating organised crime.

‘Even if Mnangagwa becomes Electoral Commission chairman, I will beat him’- Chamisa

0

Main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa declared that even if President Emmerson Mnangagwa becomes the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) “l will beat you hands down”.

Chamisa, on Sunday addressed a ‘thank you’ rally at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba where his supporters celebrated victories in recent by-elections in Wards 3, 4, 5 and 8.

With the presidential election set to be held in less than a year, Chamisa is confident that he will beat the Zanu-PF leader.

He accuses Mnangagwa of putting his relatives at the helm of the electoral body with the intention of rigging elections.

“Mnangagwa has invited his nieces and nephews to ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission), but we are saying ZEC must be impartial. Even if you, Mnangagwa, are ZEC chairman, l will beat you hands down,” he said.

Chamisa also warned councillors against exhibiting corrupt tendencies.

“We expect councillors with a good work ethic. We don’t want councillors who perpetrate corruption, you would have gone astray. Report corruption, as CCC we don’t want to be associated with anyone who steals public funds…

“…or to have deployees sent to milk cows then rip off the tits. Don’t be caught up by Zanu PF demons that push you to steal. Everything they touch with their sticky hands goes awry, they steal monies, they steal State resources, steal fisheries that belong to the people, they loot minerals, and people’s rates.”

The youthful politician urged his supporters to register to vote in order for the party to win with big margins.

“Everyone 18 years and above must register to vote. You have a duty to fix your country, to mend the economy. We don’t want a repeat of 2018 when we had a situation where l beat (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa by a small margin, and he went on to tamper with the poll figures.

“This time around, we want to beat him hands down, by a wide margin, a big margin.

“You (Mnangagwa) have no escape route, l am talking to SADC (Southern African Development Community), AU (African Union) and UN (United Nations) to come so there is transparency in ballot counting and announcement of results,” Chamisa said.

US Open ‘to pay tribute to Serena Williams with a farewell ceremony as she prepares to retire from tennis

0

The US Open will put on a farewell ceremony for Serena Williams as she prepares to retire from tennis.

Williams will play Danka Kovinic on Arthur Ashe later today, August 28, with 100 invited guests to attend the sold-out the occasion

The 40-year-old Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, is expected to retire after her home major, meaning Monday’s match could be her last in singles competition if she were to lose.

According to the New York Post, the 23,800 sell-out crowd will watch on after her match as US tennis pays tribute to her stunning career.

The publication adds that Williams will around 100 guests on hand, comprising of family and friends, to watch her in action.

Williams heads into Monday’s match with a 1-3 record since returning to action at Wimbledon earlier this year.

The 27-year-old from Montenegro heads into the Williams showdown in a five-match losing streak. But even if Williams loses Monday, there will be one other opportunity to see her on the court as she is also competing in the doubles alongside her sister, Venus.

Upon announcing her plans to retire in early August in Vogue, Williams said: ‘I have never liked the word (retirement).

‘It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.

‘Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution,’ she continued. ‘I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.’

Williams not only wants to spend more time with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and their five-year-old, Olympia, but she is hoping for another child.

‘In the last year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and we recently got some information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that whenever we’re ready, we can add to our family,’ Williams wrote.

‘I definitely don’t want to be pregnant again as an athlete. I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet out.’

Russian flashy supercars owners arrested for taking part in a car racing while the country engages in war with Ukraine
As they competed in a “Rich and Successful” rally through Moscow over the weekend, showy supercar owners from those cars were roughed up by Russian police.

While a large number of Russian soldiers were losing their lives in the conflict in Ukraine and the economy was in trouble, police could be seen harassing wealthy drivers for flaunting their Western-made vehicles on Moscow’s streets.

Police in Moscow claimed permission had not been given for the elite rally of approximately 170 Lamborghinis, Rolls-Royce Phantoms, Ferraris, Porsches, Hummer H1s, Chevrolet Corvette C8s, Audi RS5s and Bentley Continental GT IIs.

The rally which occured on Sunday, August 28 quickly trended on Russian social media as videos from across the city showed the flashing cars speeding through the Russian capital before dozens of men were rounded up by armed police and their cars seized

Russian president, Vladimir Putin is reportedly known to be furious with Russian multimillionaires and their children who display their riches publicly to the masses.

He once said: ‘In Soviet times, some people showed off their wealth by implanting gold teeth, ideally front teeth, to show the extent of their fortune.

“Lamborghinis and other expensive toys are exactly those gold teeth.”

The drivers planned to parade their cars in central Moscow with ‘Rich and Successful’ stickers. Tickets to the unofficial rally cost up to £4,200, including breakfast and after-party, but police vandalized it before it really got underway.

Rally organizer Alexei Khitrov, a 28-year-old cryptocurrency millionaire, said before the event “The aim of this event is to gather all the elite car owners and create an atmosphere for networking.”

When the police came in, “I thought it was a joke at first,” he said. He asked who ordered the crackdown and why, claiming authorities had been informed in advance.

By acting against him, they were “wiping out a very loyal person.”

A law enforcement source told Russian state agency, TASS: “A few participants have been identified at the moment. They are being taken to the police for investigation.’

Kasompe Laid Bare The Callous Heart Of Hakainde Hichilema- Dr Canisius Banda

ON THEIR OWN LAND
[The Telling Case of Kasompe]

A TERRIBLE atrocity has been committed.
Tears now flow.

Once joyous citizens, now remain anguished and gnashing their teeth.
Utterly bewildered they remain, at the cruelty meted out on them by their own methodical and unfeeling leader.

Evil causes grief.
And evil is the genesis of the Kasompe tale, a sordid tale that can only cause joy to the Devil and his followers.

On THEIR OWN LAND, land which they own, with their bare blistered hands, these citizens, for years laboured to build houses for themselves using resources earned with difficulty and pain. Then done, a measure of comfort descended upon them, success from personal initiatives having been attained, they then began to peacefully live in these houses, secure Zambians that they thought they were.

Then the bulldozers came, driven by non-feeling creatures, sent by Hakainde HICHILEMA, the very man they voted for, the Republican President they created.
Then as if in a dream, one by one, their houses, expensive structures which their own government cannot afford to build for them, began to fall to the ground.
Demolition Day had come.

Then the pain of seeing your own house, the house you suffered to build for yourself destroyed by the very people whom YOU employ and SUPERVISE, engulfed them.
The bitter tears of Kasompe residents are still flowing today. They will flow forever.

A leader needs empathy.
A leader must feel for his flock, his people.

You see, Pilgrim, the Republican Constitution is inferior to the collective will of citizens.
It is they that give birth to it, and as time and enlightenment permit, it is THEY that abolish it or make amendments to it.

Kasompe land belongs to Zambia’s citizens.
The very people whose homes/houses were demolished can decide, and NOT any Republican President by himself,, whether or not an airstrip or mine is a priority for them.
Planes, you see, are vehicles. They move, but houses do NOT.

People matter.
But planes do NOT at all.

Kasompe laid bare the callous heart of Hakainde HICHILEMA.
Hakainde HICHILEMA planted a very bad seed at Kasompe, whose harvest is coming soon, for as one maketh his bed so shall he lay on it.

The sad way the houses fell at Kasompe is exactly the sad way Hakainde HICHILEMA’s reign as Zambia’s Republican President will soon fall/end.
Demolition Day for his presidency is coming.

A leader must never inflict pain and suffering on his followers.
When he does this, this is akin to defeating himself, he then acts at variance with the very REASON/purpose of his reign.

You raze to the ground a house, shelter for a man, his wife and children, worse still shelter for a WIDOW and her children.
Then you go there and give the teary and grieving owners K1000 as compensation?

Disguised as law enforcement, this then is pure evil.
Surely, as above has its below, the DIRE effect/reaction to this unwise action will soon show. Winanso, azalila.

Kasompe is a national disaster.
It is also Hakainde HICHILEMA’s own personal leadership disaster.

Houses have fallen, the foundations have cracked.
Soon his reign will equally fall, Hakainde’s presidency is now in peril.

People first always, my man.
Business and all else, second.

Now a terrible calamity has occurred.
A bad seed has been sown.

New dawn.
And with it, new levels of suffering have come.

Tulecula.
Tulelila.
Lesa mutumfwe.

NEVER AGAIN, I lay my petition before God.
Father, as they cast their eyes on you, carry the heavy burdens of these anguished and weary citizens, comfort them Lord, I pray.

JAILED: KBF’S Son, 23, Jailed For 55 Years For Murder In Indiana, USA

JAILED: KBF’S Son, 23, Jailed For 55 Years For Murder In Indiana, USA

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — One of the four people charged in the murder of Alan Diaz has been sentenced to 55 years in prison, according to court records.

Oliver Bwalya was convicted of murder at trial in May 2022. He was sentenced on Wednesday.

One of the other defendants, Oluwatomipe Jeremiah Makanjuola, pleaded guilty to murder on June 2. Makanjuola will be sentenced July 13.

James Edward Birtcher, III, is scheduled to go to trial on one count of murder on August 29.

Adonis Zakeydaryll Harris is scheduled to go to trial on one count of murder on July 25.

BACKGROUND:

Around 11:40 p.m. on March 3, South Bend Police were called to N. Elmer Street for a ShotSpotter alert and a call about a man down.

When they arrived, they found Diaz lying on the walkway near the house. He was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Three spent casings and cash, along with some counterfeit bills, were recovered from the scene.

Diaz was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

On March 11, CMHU learned Cass County received reports of a home invasion with shots fired just a few hours before Diaz was killed in South Bend, reports said.

One of the suspects in that case, Oliver Bwalya, told investigators he and his accomplices were also involved in a crime in South Bend on March 3, reports said.

Ballistic evidence from the home invasion revealed one of the firearms from Diaz’s homicide was also used in the Cass County crime, according to the probable cause affidavit.

CMHU detectives interviewed Bwalya who said he and three accomplices had been involved in a crime in Michigan and went to Indiana to purchase marijuana from Alan Diaz, reports said.

Bwalya told police some of the money for the purchase was counterfeit, reports said.

Bwalya said he personally conducted the transaction.

After the purchase, Bwalya said he was walking back to the car when he heard Diaz yell out, report said.

At that time, the three accomplices began firing at Diaz, reports said.

Investigators say ballistic evidence obtained from the scene confirmed there were multiple firearms fired at the Elmer scene, report said.

Bwalya told police he never had a gun or shot at Diaz and identified the three men he was with that night, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Makanjuola was arrested along with Bwalya in Michigan.

Makanjuola provided much of the same information as Bwalya.

Makanjuola told investigators Bwalya sent him a Snapchat that said, “On gang be here and have sticks bro I got 3 planned out hits already the rest are just optional but the 3 are 100%,” reports said.

He and two friends then drove from Columbus, Ohio and met up with Bwalya, reports said.
