Twin sisters in court over 26 cannabis cupcakes
Two University of Lusaka students have found themselves in a rather unusual legal recipe after being accused of trafficking 26 marijuana-laced cupcakes in Lusaka.
Lusaka, 9 October – Twin sisters Blessings Kaonga and Gift Kaonga, both 20, appeared before Lusaka Magistrate Fine Mayambu today, where they denied trafficking in psychotropic substances without lawful authority.
According to the charge before the court, the sisters allegedly trafficked the cupcakes on September 25, 2026. The 26 cupcakes reportedly weighed 520.52 grams and contained cannabis with a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of 0.72 percent, well above the prescribed limit of 0.3 percent.
In other words, what may have looked like an ordinary batch of cupcakes allegedly turned out to be a matter for the Magistrates’ Court, proving once again that in Lusaka, even a cupcake can apparently come with legal consequences.
The prosecution alleges that the sisters were involved in the trafficking of the cannabis-laced cakes without lawful authority. The twins, however, pleaded not guilty, leaving the court to decide whether this was simply a case of questionable baking choices or something considerably more serious.
The case has now been adjourned to October 16, 2026, when the sisters are expected to return for trial.
Until then, the court will have to leave the final judgment to the evidence, while the 26 cupcakes remain at the centre of a case that has given the phrase “baking trouble” an entirely different meaning.
