WE WILL INTERVIEW FORMER FIRST LADY FROM HER HOME OR LAWYERS’ OR WHERE SHE IS COMFORTABLE-DEC

“WE have a lot of respect for the former first lady Esther Lungu. It is unfortunate that the flats ownership were in her name. And so because we have respect for her, we will interview her from wherever she will be comfortable with being interviewed,” the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has said.

DEC Director General Mary Chirwa says the interview of the former first lady has been postponed and that the nation will be informed in due course.

On July 1st, DEC repossessed 15 flats allegedly owned by the former first lady Esther Lungu as they are believed to be proceeds of crime.

The Commission revealed that the properties were in the name Esther Nyawa Tembo, who happens to be the former first lady.

However, Ms Chirwa said during a presser that it was unfortunate that the property belonged to the former first lady, but that with respect, she would be accorded the liberty of being interviewed wherever she was comfortable with.

“We had set up a date to interview the first lady, but lawyers stated that she was not available at that time. So when they set up another date, equally as DEC we had other duties that we needed to attend to. So the nation will be informed on when the interview will be held,” she said.

Ms Chirwa further clarified that the commission had the mandate to investigate property that did not appear in the Ministry of Lands registry as it was it’s duty to have them verified, thus the repossession.
