KATEKA REPORTS POLICE TO HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

CHISHALA Kateka has written to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) to investigate the police for denying the New Heritage Party to hold a rally in Lusaka’s Mandevu Township on June 1, 2024.

Ms Kateka had informed police of the party’s intention to hold a public rally.

“We call on all our members, supporters and democracy loving Zambian’s to turn up in large numbers. As ably stated by the Law Association of Zambia there is no law in Zambia that compels the police to give permission for a political rally,” Ms Kateka said.

She said since the UPND came into power, no opposition political party has ever held a political rally whilst President Hakainde Hichilema and UPND does so unconditionally.

  1. Why not apply to hold a rally at woodlands stadium and see if police will deny them a permit? These political parties should stop using komboni people for their selfish ambitions. Elyo why are police denying them permits instead of providing them with security to ensure their rallies are peaceful this is ridiculous. Ms. Kateka was in record to say the rally will go on with or without a police permit, manje what has happened? I was looking forward to a successful rally with the protection of police, after all NHP is a legally registered political unlike UKA which is a collection of some opposition political parties.

    • So, which law provides for a police permit in order to hold a public political rally?! Please learn to base you discourse on legal perspective or else, you risk embarrassing yourself in public.
And, by the way, these opposition party you dislike so much, are Zambians too and are doing everything in their knowledge to ensure democracy is sustained, without unnecessary conflict with the police.

The Zambia Police is acting illegally because they do not have legal mandate to either stop or permit public gather; it’s just to inform them& it must end there..

  2. Ba Kateka opposition political parties have campaigned freely during by-elections. Rallies for what? Next year is campaign time. Rallies will then be held till 2026 general elections. That’ll be enough time for everyone to prepare for the coming general elections. The constitution should be amended so that rallies should be held only during by-elections and general elections to avoid unnecessary confusion.

    • No one is discuss campaign bro. Learn to understand context. And a public gathering or rally is not always about campaign.

HH and the UPND have held such rallies and you can’t tell me thàt it was a campaign ploy, or can you?!

Let’s all propagate normalcy, rather than lawlessness being perpetrated by police authority..
