TO ABORT OR NOT TO ABORT?

A scholar and cleric Dr Given Mutinta has weighed in on the debate on whether one of the kidnapping survivors who was impregnated by her abductors should terminate the pregnancy or not.

Below is his thought provoking write up:

ABORTION FOR ABDUCTION VICTIM

The report, if true, that one of the twelve young women who were abducted is pregnant for one of the abductors makes a sad reading.

A debate is raging whether the young woman should keep or terminate her pregnancy.

As a pro-lifer, she should keep the pregnancy because intentional abortion is murder of a human being.

Once conception in particular the fertilisation; the union between the sperm and egg has taken place, the result is the embryo.

The embryo is a genetically new human life organised as a distinct entity oriented towards further development as a biologically individuated member of the human species. It is a human being and commands such a degree of respect as to prohibit destructive actions such as abortion.

It is an old fact that from a biological point of view, there is no argument as to when human life begins. Evidence from eminent scientists from all over the world shows that human life begins at conception.

Regardless of the circumstances of conception; raped, or under abduction or duress, considering abortion which is direct killing of a human being who has nothing to do with the abduction fiasco in the Chalala township of Lusaka is a violation of the rights of the unborn youngest member of our society and the human family.

Therefore, abortion is, thus not just a matter of personal choice, religious view or women’s rights, but a basic human rights and social justice issue.

We are all are called to respect human life at all stages, and to ensure a society where crimes of violence or murder are as far as possible prevented.

Human life is sacred and must be respected and protected from the moment of conception.

The circumstance in which the young woman conceived, as an abductee, is cruel and unacceptable but cannot be used to raise questions about abortion because no one has a right to directly and intentionally terminate pregnancy before viability or to directly and intentionally destroy a viable foetus.

It is wrong to take any action that has, as its sole and direct purpose, the ending of human life in the womb.

Regardless of the situation surrounding the conception, the innocent and unborn child of the abductee should be respected and treated as a person; and therefore from that same moment of conception his or her rights as a person must be recognised, among which the first is the inviolable right of every innocent human being to life.

Therefore, encouraging the pregnant abductee to abort does not offer an authentic solution to the crisis she is facing.

Encouraging her to abort is responding to her trauma by offering a second trauma, which does not make sense. It exacerbates the original act of violence of abduction and probably of sexual assault with yet more violence of abortion.

Instead of encouraging the young woman to abort, she needs love and support from family, friends, government, and non-government organisations along with the reassurance that she can get through this together with us as society.

What she needs is the love, hope and compassion to buoy her up as she is facing uncertainty about her own future.

If supported generously, though it is a hard road to walk, she will one day look back on what happened and express her relief that she was not offered the chance to destroy her own child following an abduction.

Rather than targeting an innocent bystander, we should target the abductor who carried out the assault.

This is a challenge to the government to invest in human capacity building and technology to enable security wings fight sophisticated organised crimes such as abduction, terrorism, and others.

This will make it difficult for perpetrators of such crimes to cover their tracks, and will enhance the safety and protection of citizens.

In conclusion, intended abortion is a crime against human life and obtaining an abortion or encouraging or helping the young woman to obtain an abortion is being an accomplice to murder.

  1. BOKO HARAM HAS COME TO ZAMBIA. WE THOUGHT WE ARE FAR AWAY FROM NIGERIA WHERE WE WERE JUST WATCHING IT ON TV AND SOCIAL MEDIA. NOW ABDUCTIONS HAVE ALSO COME TO ZAMBIA.

  2. No doubt many will advise the pregnant lady to abort. But like the author above, please don’t even think about it. It’s best that you keep the pregnancy and successfully give birth and look after the child with joy and praises to God. Why because abortion is sin and the aborted child will cry to God why it has been aborted. This is spiritual. So just commit the pregnancy and child in the womb to God. And Jesus, will take over for you dear lady. This is a friendly warning

  3. Jesus wept! What the hell is wrong with the collective conscience of this country. This is so deplorable and shameless. Why is this up for public debate? No one has the right to discuss what she does. This is till an active case, the girls have been through the worst kind of trauma and the debate is should she abort. Why not talk about the need for continuous counselling and how to help them reintegrate into normal life. F*cking Hell! This country needs an intervention

  4. Whatever, this cleric smokes must be very strong; may be it is Ganja and Heroin combined. How does he expect this woman to love, feed, educate, and bring up the child of an abductor that raped and impreganted her unwillingly?
Seeing the child of the abductor every day will be reminding this woman of the crime that she endured in her early life and will affect her mentally and physcally afterwards. Does Mutinta really expect this woman to be reliving this horror every day and still be ok? It is easier said when you are not the person going through that – that is severely traumatic!! Rape alone kills someone so what more about rape plus pregnancy? Mutinta must be MAD!

    • I echo your sentiments and they are 100% spot on.

And lest we forget, ultimately, it is the young lady’s choice to keep or terminate the pregnancy. Not us, the armchair observers.

  5. Thìs is a thought provoking article by the Doc.i sincerely hope in debating the young girl’s predicament we are not prescribing a mandatory preconceived outcome as to what the girl and her parents should do. They are going through a lot already. Please its only fair to give them space to sort themselves out of this predicament. Doc, this is not your child and you are certainly not wearing their troubled circumstances. Its definitely not asking too much to politely request you to please mind your business. The girl has an able family, relatives and above all their faith to guide them. Please be sensitive to other people’s pain.

  6. YOU ARE BEING UNNECESSARILY SENTIMENTAL. JUST BE SOBER WHEN CONSIDERING THE ALTERNATIVES. SUPPOSE THE PREGNANCY IS NOT TERMINATED AND A BOY CHILD IS BORN AND IS AN xyy (BIOLOGICALLY, THIS IS THE GENETIC COMBINATION FOR A BORN KLEPTOMANIAC), WILL SHE BE A HAPPY MOTHER WHEN THIS GENE STARTS MANIFESTING IN THE CHARACTER OF THE TEENAGER OR MAN? IF THE FATHER IS ARRESTED AND DIES IN PRISON, WON’T THE TERM “BASTARD” ACCRUE TO THE CHILD? WHAT WILL BE HIS REACTION? REMEMBER WHAT MADE SHAKA THE ZULU TO MURDER HIS HALF BROTHERS DINGANI AND MHLANGANI? BECAUSE THEY CALLED HIM A BASTARD! IT IS THE NATURE OF BASTARDS TO BE CRUEL TO COMPENSATE FOR THEIR “BASTARDNESS” OR “BASTARDHOOD”. BUT BECAUSE LIFE IS SACRED, CONSULT A REAL PROPHET FOR GUIDANCE.

  7. It has emerged that Pamela lived with her parents around Makeni Simoson area — Makeni side. At the time, she had a child out of wedlock. Then she conceived again and, this time, the mother was not happy seeing that another illegitimate child was going to be born after nine months. So she asked Pamela to move in with the man who had made her pregnant. As a result, Pamela joined her man around Santwant Singh area. But her man happened to be unemployed. This prompted the expecting mother to open up an Airtel Money booth to help generate funds. But, before long, she was kidnapped and disappeared for six monthsn before being discovered the other day. Now since it has been reported that one of the 13 rescued girls is pregnant, this surely must be Pamela no doubt with the child from her man way before the abduction. Unless otherwise, we have
also heard that the abductors were always buying condoms and sanitary pads. So chances of making any of the girls pregnant seems slim. Even so, condoms are not 100% safe. So all things are possible.

  8. Abort this unwanted pregnancy. It’s more abuse to raise a child you never intended to have. Even God does family planning and abortion is not a sin.

  9. Mutinta would be looking for an abortion if it was his daughter. Does he intend to provide this victim with funds to bring up this child? These useless born again charlatans are the poison in the Zambia society. They sleep with their daughters and relatives and then call on God.

  10. We should be sympathetic and sensitive to these ladies for the ordeal they went through.

We should not make the abuse they went through a subject of social media discussion and debate. If we do so, we are making them go through the torture over and over again. Our efforts should be directed at helping them heal, not re opening the wound.
