Names of Barracks

During WW2, the Zambian National Defense Force, by then called Northern Rhodesia Regiment, fought for the crown in a multi-ethnic military unit which was raised by the British colonial government.

1. Arakan or Rakhine is a state in Myanmar which was the site of many battles during the Second World War, most notably the Arakan Campaign 1942–43 and the Battle of Ramree Island

2. Burma- which is the name give to both the road and the barrack – is the former name for Myanmar before the renaming that happened on 18th June 1989.

3. Chindwin Barrack in Kabwe is named after a river which flows entirely in Myanmar, and the largest tributary of the country’s main river, the Ayeyarwady. Its official name is also spelled Chindwinn

4. Kohima Barracks also in Kabwe is named after the capital city of India’s north eastern state of Nagaland. The famous battle of Kohima took place here in 1944.

5. Tug-Argan Barracks in Ndola is named The Battle of Tug Argan which was fought between forces of the British Empire and Italy from 11 to 15 August 1940 in British Somaliland (later the independent and renamed Somalia).

6. Taung Up Barracks in Mufulira is named after Taungup or Toungup Township, a coastal township of Rakhine (Arakan) State of Myanmar.

7. Kalewa Barracks in Ndola is named after Kalewa, a township in Myanmar
