LUANGWA BRIDGE FACTS

1. Before the bridge a pontoon was used to transport people and goods

2. The bridge was initially called Beit bridge because it was funded by the Beit Trust at a cost of £88,650 British pounds.

3. The bridge was completed in December 1933 but initial works started in June 1931.

4. Materials for the bridge were shipped from Britain to Beira, Railed to Lusaka and then carried 160 miles/257 kilometres to a camp beside the Luangwa.

5. The bridge was launched by sir Hubert Young, the then governor of Northern Rhodesia
