SHAKAFUSWA TALKS ON HOW HIS SON HAS BEEN HELD BACK IN PF BECAUSE HE IS LENJE
Jonas Shakafuswa writes:-

MY SON Christopher Shakafuswa. I want you to know that I have always wanted the best out of you and your siblings. The last thing I would do is stand in your progress in life.

But then there comes a time in life when you have to choose what is right or wrong. I have tried to choose what is right through out my life.
You know I have tried my best to be an upright person. Chiluba sponsored NOCE to portray a picture of me being a criminal.

Not a single day have I ever slept in a Police cell, except when Lusaka Commanding officer Commissioner Sakala and Kamukoshi changed statements from complainants in Kaoma to implicate me in an assault case in the Kaoma by election.

RB fired me for opposing his stand on corruption. Today am on the terraces because am a proud Lenje.

I wasn’t happy that despite helping ECL win the 2016 election he chose to overlook your qualities and ability to stand as Mayor for Lusaka because you are Lenje.

They raised the stakes that only a degree holder should be Mayor. This eliminates every contender but you. When they discovered this they changed that only master degree holder should stand. Yes it disqualified you to bring in a novice who was Bemba.

You stood and won the seat of Deputy Mayor without the support of most members of the Party.
Most Councellors believe in you and made you win, I thank my brother Paul Moonga who stood by you.

They even fabricated an assault case against you. Am happy the DPP saw the truth.
Today you aspiring to stand as MP for Mandebvu. My son you qualify. Lusaka is the land of the Lenjes and Solis.

But these people we have allowed to settle in our Land have continuously denied our people to lead.

Today am told am standing in your way because am opposing your beloved Uncle ECL’s Government and Party who want the best out of you. Lol. Where was he when they denied you to be Mayor? Where was he when Miles Sampa was saying why have you have given me a Lenje to be my Deputy? This is what has annoyed me. Was I born of the wrong tribe? I vehemently deny this.

You have been very loyal to your Party. When Davies Chama, Inonge Wina asked me to stand in Katuba to help Edgar Lungu win 50+1 in the first round I proudly accepted despite knowing that I will lose and forfeit my seat as MP for Katuba. Yes I was annoyed that despite refusing. ministerial Job from ECL, UPND announced on news that I won’t be adopted in Katuba for greeting ECL at a football match at Heroes stadium.

I campaigned for ECL. But what? Lenjes have been fired from Government positions. The few appointed from the Lenje land are all outsiders. So what did I fight for?

So these threats am having on my life and them saying they won’t adopt you as MP because of me are laughable. Let them do the right thing for once because you are the right person and qualify to be MP. Let them look at your record.

Of the Aspiring MPs you have the most education. A degree holder. A native in your land. In your land you can stand for any position. In their land they can’t allow you to stand for any position.

Believe in your ability and go for it. Will always love and believe in you.
Sorry for openly expressing myself. Am just being Jonas Jonadab Shakafuswa. Your Father.

Deputy National youth Chairperson Cindy Kauka says UPND has continued receiving new members because it has a credible leadership with a vision to serve the country and its citizens.

Speaking after welcoming five members from the ruling Patriotic Front, Ms Kauka said people of Zambia now have confidence that President Hichilema is the only one serious to deliver the country from the sufferings inflicted to Zambians by the failed leadership of the Patriotic Front.

She said the UPND has capable leaders to run a successful government and urged the people to be on the look out for any distractions.

Ms Kauka added that the PF government has been unfair when it comes to governance and freedom of expression by opposition political parties.

She advised the youths to mobilise more youths and people around them ahead of the coming elections.

She further said that HH has all he needs to survive but has decided to leave his comfort to fight for the good of the general citizenry.159365869_292344962306083_6765106392359322912_n

Ms Kauka urged the youths to maintain discipline and not to allow themselves to be arrested or used as tools for political violence saying this will reduce the number of votes needed to take HH to state house.

The new ambassadors of change are PF IPS Paul Mweemba and four others who decided to join the opposition UPND a party serious with serving the country and it’s people.

Mr Paul Mweemba said he is happy to join UPND because it has proven to the people at large that it means well to the country’s.

He said that youths living in rural areas are suffering and need a leadership that has interest of people at heart and not the PF which has ignored it’s people

Ms Kauka further said that the country today needs a credible leadership to get it back to it’s feet.

She urged the youths to go out and campaign for the UPND until the voting day.

Kauka said UPND is coming from the intraparty elections and that during the campaigns groups were formed to support desired candidates.

She urged the people to dismantle the camps and begin to work as one.

She said there is no time for groups ahead of the general elections.

Finally, She added that there is only one Zambia that President Hichilema Seeks to build once the Party forms government.

The occasion was attended by President Hakainde Hichilema and NDC Secretary General Bridget Atanga.

ConCourt warns ECZ never to allow individuals without G12 certificate contest elections

0

By Mwaka Ndawa

THE Constitutional Court has warned the Electoral Commission of Zambia against processing nominations for candidates who do not have requisite academic qualifications in the August 12 presidential and general elections as well as future elections to avoid violating the Constitution.

The court said so when it dismissed the petition in which losing candidate for Lundazi Constituency Colonel Bizwayo Nkunika petitioned it seeking a declaration that the Lundazi parliamentary seat be declared vacant and ordering the Electoral Commission of Zambia ( ECZ) to hold elections within 90 days.

The majority judges of the court held that Lundazi Central member of parliament Lawrence Nyirenda and the Electoral Commission of Zambia did not breach the Constitution when the electoral body allowed Nyirenda to file in his nomination for the 2016 elections without the requisite grade 12 certificate or its equivalent.

But in their dissenting judgements Constitutional Court President Hildah Chibomba and Palan Mulonda said Nyirenda ought to be disqualified as a member of parliament as he does not have the requisite academic qualifications and contravenes Article 70(1)(d) of the Constitution.

Col Nkunika had cited Lawrence Nyirenda as the first respondent and ECZ as the second respondent in the matter claiming that Nyirenda does not have the minimum academic qualifications as prescribed under Article 70 (1) (d) of the
Constitution of Zambia because he does not hold a grade 12 certificate.

During hearing, the Zambia Qualifications Authority and the Examination Council of Zambia told the Constitutional Court that the General certificate of education and other qualifications which Nyirenda submitted to the Electoral Commission of Zambia when filing in nominations are not equal to a Grade 12 certificate.

This was after they were summoned by the court to explain what constitutes a grade 12 certificate following Nyirenda’s explaination that he did not know that a grade 12 certificate is constituted by five subjects.

According to Examination Council of Zambia director and chief executive officer Dr Michael Chilala, a school certificate was an academic qualification awarded to a person who satisfies two conditions in one and the same examination (i) an individual should obtains a pass in 6 subjects, including English language and atleast one among the six subjects should be credit and (ii) A pass in atleast five subjects including English with atleast two of the five should be credit or better.

However, justices Ann Sitali, Mungeni Mulenga and Martin Musaluke in their majority judgement said a higher qualification includes any qualification awarded by a tertiary institution or a vocational institution offering skills training and is superior to a secondary school certificate.

Justice Musaluke on behalf of others said the Kabwe High Court judgment in the Sibongile Zulu case of 2016 was binding and the ECZ was bound by it therefore a tertiary, vocational or apprenticeship certificate were accepted as equivalents to a grade 12 certificate based on the said judgement.

He said Nyirenda did not breach the Constitution when he presented his General Certificate of Education (GCE) and other qualifications during the nomination for the Lundazi Central Constituency parliamentary seat in 2016.

Justice Musaluke said the electoral body processed nominations for the national assembly for the 2016 general elections based on what constitutes a grade 12 certificate or its equivalent for purposes of Article 70 (1)(d) on the basis of the High Court judgement in the Sibongile case.

“We cannot disregard the central role which the Sibongile Zulu case played in the electoral process of 2016. Nyirenda’s certificates were accepted for nomination based on other qualifications that were deemed equivalent to grade 12 certificate as notified by the ECZ,” judge Musaluke said.

He said the ECZ had an obligation to obey the pronouncement of the Kabwe High Court in the Sibongile Zulu case that a draft vocational or apprenticeship certificate would be equivalent to a grade 12 certificate.

“Nyirenda and ECZ did not contravene the provisions of Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution based on the interpretation of what amounted or is equivalent to a grade 12 certificate by the High Court,” he said.

He said the description by the Zambia Qualifications Authority and the Examination Council of Zambia of what constitutes a grade 12 certificate cannot apply to Lawrence Nyirenda because at the time of his nomination and election, there was a binding High Court decision upon which the electoral body acted.

Justice Musaluke said Col Nkunika did not challenge the validity of Nyirenda’s nomination or his election within seven days due to the instructions by ECZ that candidates without grade 12 certificates but had other qualifications should be accepted.

He said during nominations, candidates have been put on alert to challenge a nomination and election before any court or appropriate tribunal during a specific period.

“The constitution does not provide for a provisional nomination for purposes of elections for members of parliament nor does any other law do so by instructing returning officers to accept any candidate without requisite qualifications and indicate the word provisional on their subject of validation, ECZ added an interest depth,” judge Musaluke said

“Its mandate was to accept or reject a nomination based on the qualifications submitted by a candidate we do not expect ECZ to repeat such conduct in future elections.”

He added that Col Nkuinka’s claims regarding the contravention of Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution fails and is dismissed.

Judge Musaluke however indicated that the other relief that the electoral body conducts elections for Lundazi Central Constituency within 90 days remains mute.

But justice Chibomba in her dissenting judgement said she did not agree with the findings and conclusion of the majority based on the High Court decision.

She said the Sibongile case should not oust the interpretation of Article 70(1)(d) as the implication of such a decision is that a contravention of the Constitution must not arise until the court declares.

She said any Act that contravenes the constitution after it came into force should be rendered unconstitutional and illegal ab initio.

“The Sibongile Zulu case did not qualify any person in an election or member of parliament. It directed would be candidates to present their qualifications before ECZ in a manner evidencing that he or she has completed the required education programme or its equivalent,” justice Chibomba said.

Judge Chibomba ruled that the High Court shifted the responsibility to ECZ when it directed that the commission in effecting its mandate has the recourse to administratively consult with other relevant agencies, including the Examination Council of Zambia, ZAQA and Zambia police serve to ascertain the authenticity of documents presented.

She said the Sibongile case should not be a basis of allowing a person who was not eligible to contest elections and a person who does not have requisite qualifications to continue in office as member of parliament.

“This Court must be courteous in the manner it interprates the constitution because our interpretation becomes the law. The constitution is the supreme law of the land and the courts must breath life, grow and develop the constitution in order to be the requirements of an ever developing society,” judge Chibomba said.

She said ECZ’s mandate was to either accept or reject the nomination based in the qualifications submitted by candidates.

Judge Chibomba cautioned the electoral body against allowing candidates who do not have a grade 12 certificate or it’s equivalent to file their nominations.

“It has not been shown that ECZ complied with the guidelines given by the High Court in the Sibongile Zulu case. In my view Nyirenda and ECZ contravened Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution on grounds that the certificates Nyirenda produced during his nomination were not equivalent to a grade 12 certificate,” said judge Chibomba.

” I would have ordered that since he did not meet the requirements of Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution his nomination and election and continued holding of office as member of parliament is contrary to the said Article and should be disqualified from continuing to hold office.”

And justice Mulonda said the Sibongile Zulu case cannot continue to hold in view of the fact that Nyirenda does not possess requisite academic qualifications.

He said the constitution is clear on the consequences of its contravention

He said any contravention of the Constitution is illegal.

Judge Mulonda ruled that according to the evidence by ZAQA and the Examination Council of Zambia, that Nyirenda does not possess requisite academic qualifications, Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution disqualifies him from being a member of parliament.

“Nyirenda not being in possession of a grade 12 certificate or its equivalent stands disqualified in terms of Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution and cannot continue to sit in Parliament as to do so will not only be illegal under Article 1(2) of the Constitution but a dereliction of duty on our part as a court. I would have ordered that Nyirenda should not have continued to sit as a member of parliament as this goes against Article 70 (1)(d) of the Constitution,” said justice Mulonda.

MALITE WARNS KAMBWILI TO PETITION THE MEDIA TO HAVE HIM BLACACKLISTED

MALITE WARNS KAMBWILI TO PETITION THE MEDIA TO HAVE HIM BLACACKLISTED

Lusaka 12:03:21

Speaking during youth days celebrations today in Lusaka when National Democratic Congress (NDC) party and the United Party for National Development (UPND) held a joint youth day celebrations, Emmanuel Malite who is NDC Media Director said he will petition media houses to blacklist the former NDC interim leader Chishimba Kambwili for threatening the media.

This follows a story carried in today’s mast newspaper were Dr Kambwili is alleged threatening the media institution.

Malite further said, he is dissapointed for Dr Kambwili to threaten the media, when it’s the same media which covered him when he was in trouble, now that his dinning with the wolves he wants to attack the media, that is not leadership Sir.

Malite has since called upon Dr Kambwili to apologize to the media within 24hrs or else he shall go ahead and petition the media to have him blacklisted.

There is so much we know of Dr Kambwili, you all know when the post newspaper was closed Dr Kambwili was then the Information and Broadcasting Minister, I don’t want to dwell on that for now, I will leave It for another day, but I want to warn Dr Kambwili that I will petition the media.

As NDC leadership under Rikki Josephs Akafumba we are with the UPND Alliance, even the MP you campaigned for as UPND during the Roan by-election, Honourable Joseph Chishala, his also standing on the UPND Alliance ticket come August 12,2021.

And for me, why I don’t want to talk about the monies the PF are splashing in public is because the Bible says in (Mathew 7:5) You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. You all heard about the $ 200,000 which went missing in Dr Kambwili’s house and that was not the only money which was there, that was just a tip of an iceberg, we need to clean our own house, that’s the reason I can’t talk about PF now.

Our Father it seems his standing with his two legs in two different camps and he has been tasked to frustrate the Alliance, which he has failed because God is in the UPND Alliance and you cannot fight God.

Unconfirmed reports states that last weekend the man was spotted in the Copperbelt with some named Minister and that he has been asked to refund the monies he collected from his pay masters because he has failed to disturbalize the Alliance, Sir you should have accessed the risk.

I would also like to assure our colleagues in the UPND not to worry about Saboi Imboela’s rantings, that one she is just ashamed of coming back to UPND as she didn’t leave well, my advise to fellow politicians is never cross paths with people because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring, just few months ago she’s the same person who was castigating the PF the same people she’s now praising after realising that it’s a dead end for her.

To the people of Zambia, NDC is intact and to our members and sympathizers be assured that NDC is in the UPND Alliance chapwa, kwamana.

HH, The Whole UPND, Independent MPs And NDC’s Chishala, The Real Patriots – Sikaile Sikaile

SIKAILE SIKAILE WRITES

MR HAKAINDE HICHILEMA, THE WHOLE UPND, INDEPENDENT MPS AND NDC’S CHISHALA, THE REAL PATRIOTS

Finally, the law that is only supported by a ZAF captain and the whole PF is awaiting presidential signature. What this cyber bill has done is to give us the people of Zambia the glimpse of what should have happened if we allowed the constitution to be opened up and be tone apart by selfish people masquerading as leaders. Remember, it was the cyber space that helped to expose a lot of PF’s ills even during the 2016 general elections and presidential petition.

What PF and Edgar Lungu have forgotten is that things changes. Even the devil before being chased by God in heaven after being unruly he ( devil), thought he had it all by himself. Facts are that from the day Mr Lungu will sign this bill to the voting day alot can happen to anyone of us including those behind this evil law. That’s how God operates, but the crimes against humanity committed by PF has made them forget that there’s tomorrow whose end is unknown.

Personally I’m ready and I welcome this bill since it has hinted on cyber terrorism and a punishment of 35 years to life imprisonment has been put for offenders. We hope this cyber bill will immediately move in to investigate Edgar Lungu who was cited of funding terrorism in Rwanda using public resources as highlighted in the Auditor General’s report as well. It is in the public domain and what PF should know is that, this law will injure them more than they wish it to deal with Zambians. It is in the same PF regime were ministers and cadres have through cyber space threatened to eliminate certain ethnic groups and political organizations under the instructions of president Edgar Lungu. It is the same PF that has used cyber space to incite tribalism. All these will haunt PF one day and we appreciate them for drafting a law that when it is applied to them they won’t cry foul that there is political witch hunt.

To you people at ECZ, the Cyber bill will haunt you for manipulating elections through hacking systems and declaring fake results in past elections. This bill has already booked Esau Chulu and team life imprisonment if not 35 years jail sentence. Thank you your Excellency for this noble action. ZNBC reporting fake news in the past and your unprofessional conduct during the presidential petition were you reported the court outcomes before the court proceedings is another life imprisonment awaiting those who were in charge. “Milandu siwola imwe bantu.”

The same cyber space helped to expose the lies of Honourable Kampyongo and police IG. The cyber space helped to expose all those involved in the murder of Nsama and Joseph, even though only one of them is arrested. It was the same cyber space that helped to expose Lusambo beating up people on a law that was only in his head.

Zambians remember, the day Nsama and Joseph were shot by the PF Government, a ZAF plane was hovering around HH’s residence. May be piloted by the same pilot who walked to Livingstone in support of a cyber bill. I am sure the reason ZAF got involved in supporting the cyber bill, was the fact that their plane on that day was captured and broadcast live on social media. This cyber bill will see many people today serving in PF regime including that ZAF captain being booked or cited for terrorism.

Mind you ba PF we haven’t forgotten how twice Mr Kampyongo and PF government attempted to bring down HH helicopter in Shiwañandu. This is serious terrorism the cyber bill is talking about and Hon Kampyongo should be ready for his 35 years or life imprisonment. All these exposé are the motivation to block cyber space for helping Zambians and the world at large know what Edgar Chagwa Lungu is doing in Zambia against humanity.

However, my main interest is to show how HH, UPND, independents and Chishala for NDC helped to serve Zambia.First, the whole Parliament has been pushed into a fast track law maker. Can you imagine all the lacunas in the laws they never rushed. What more with the cyber bill they have rushed? Their constitution has lucanas but, they still felt like they needed to start rushing other laws that will help them to close space so they manipulate elections.
They went into Parliament and amended standing orders to fuse all stages of passing law into one. What interest? It must be all for 12/08/21 elections.

If you did not know it, this is what they could have done with our constitution had it not been for HH, UPND, NDC and Independent MPs who served our supreme law of the land. Only God knows what clauses they could have put in their substantive legislations. They could have amended the constitution to postpone elections indefinitely. Allow ECL to be a life President like his father Yoweri Kaguta Museni and make him a head of Electoral Commission of Zambia and so on and so forth.

To all those patriots who resisted the temptation of money and put Zambia first, I say thank you and God bless you. You served the country from these thieves and murderers who wanted to continue stealing and killing at the expense of service delivery. To the patriots I have this to say, “you did your part, our constitution is safe”. Now it is up to us and I want to assure you and fellow citizens that no law not even threats of arrests will stop me from exposing thieves and murderers.
Even in prisons, I will find a way of sneaking in the commanding officer’s of office, access internet and post in the interest of my country.

To all those true patriots feeding us with information we value you so much and appreciate your sacrifice for mother Zambia.

Fast tracking law making process is only applicable to a country at war. But, it is now clear that PF is at war with the citizens of this country. They want us to shut up for them to do as they please. I say never will I stand by to watch my country being silenced by dishonourable characters. I am ready for this tyrannical regime just like our forefathers died for our independence.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE : Dr. Fred M’membe … With the death of Robert Mugabe, Fred will be the most highly educated president in Africa

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Dr. Fred M’membe
Party: Socialist Party (SP)
Age: 62 Years

Born 11th March 1959 in Mongu Barotseland, Dr. Fred M’membe is the current Presidential candidate of the Socialist Party which he founded.

He is widely known as a journalist for his editorship of now defunct Post Newspapers. He has received numerous international awards for his reporting. In 2000, the International Press Institute named him one of its World Press Freedom Heroes.
M’membe went to St John’s Secondary School, where he did his junior secondary, and later went to St Francis in Malole where he completed his senior secondary.

He studied accounting at Copperbelt University. He worked for a time as an accountant before moving into journalism in November 1990. He is also a qualified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and has a Master in Economic Policy and Planning from the University of Zambia. He also holds a Law Degree from the University of Zambia and is an advocate of the High Court and Supreme Court of Zambia.
The formation of his defunct Post Newspapers happened after he met Mike Hall, a Malawi-born journalist who covered Southern Africa for the BBC and UK and US newspapers. At the time, Zambia had only two newspapers, both of them controlled by the government of Kenneth Kaunda, and the pair felt that an independent news source was long overdue. With Hall’s help,M’membe went on to found Post Newspapers Limited in 1991, as well as a printing company, Independent Printers Limited, which would be responsible for printing The Zambia Post, Post Newspapers’ flagship publication. The pair modelled the paper’s design on South Africa’s liberal Weekly Mail and Lisbon,Portugal’s daily Público. Despite a modest circulation of 40,000 and Zambia’s “anemic” economy, the paper quickly proved a financial success.

M’MEMBE IN CHILUBA ERA

As the only Independent newspaper in Zambia,The Post frequently came into conflict with the government. In the first ten years of its existence alone, it was the target of more than fifty criminal and civil suits.Though the paper supported Frederick Chiluba’s Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) in the1991 election that ousted Kenneth Kaunda and won Chiluba the presidency, M’membe soon became critical of what he perceived as Chiluba’s failure to live up to his campaign promises
Ahead of the 1996 general election, Chiluba’s government increased its efforts to restrict independent media. On 5 February 1996, The Post reported the MMD’s plans to hold a referendum on constitutional changes.Chiluba’s government banned the edition and charged M’membe, managing editor Bright Mwape, and special projects editor Masautso Phiri with possession of a banned publication and state secrets, causing the three to go into hiding for several weeks to avoid arrest.

M’membe and Mwape surrendered to authorities in March and were sentenced to 24 days in a maximum security prison on charges of contempt of Parliament. The charges were protested by the Committee to Protect Journalists, which launched a letter-writing campaign to secure thepair’s release.
In 1999, M’membe and ten members of his staff were charged with espionage following a Post article that stated that Zambia was unprepared to withstand a possible military attack from Angola.
The newspaper’s offices were also surrounded by police to prevent further publishing. M’membe’s co-defendants were acquitted by the Lusaka High Court on 18 August 2000, though the judge ruled that M’membe himself still had to answer the case.
He was acquitted in December of the same year.In August 2001, M’membe was arrested again following an article in which he accused Chiluba of embezzlement. The article began, “It’s very difficult to avoid calling President Frederick Chiluba a thief, because he is a thief. How else can one describe a person who steals?”
M’membe was charged with defaming the president, charges The New York Times described as “efforts to muzzle the press” ahead of impending elections.

POST-CHILUBA CONTROVERSIES

Though Chiluba was barred by the Constitution of Zambia from seeking a third term, he was succeeded by his former vice-president and fellow MMD member Levy Mwanawasa. M’membe soon found himself in conflict with Mwanawasa as he had been with Chiluba, and was arrested on 12 February 2002 on defamation charges following publication of an article in which he quoted opposition lawmaker Dipak Patel as calling Mwanawasa a “cabbage,” an apparent reference to Mwanawasa’s condition following a serious traffic accident that left him with slurred speech. M’membe stated that he believed the charges to be “politically motivated”,and that Patel (who was also issued a summons) was their primary target.During a June 2009 hospital strike, Post News Editor Chansa Kabwela forwarded to Vice-President George Kunda pictures that had been given to the newspaper of a woman giving birth in the street, which she felt were important to share but too graphic to publish. The following month, she was arrested on a charge of”distributing obscene materials in order to corrupt the morals of society”.The charges against her were dismissed by a judge in November 2009, but after M’membe published an op-ed piece from a Zambian lawyer living abroad in Kabwela’s support, he was charged with contempt of court. He was convicted in June 2010 and sentenced to four months’ hard labour.

In July 2011, M’membe again faced a charge of contempt of court for defying a ban not to print “libelous”articles about presidential candidate (later president) Rupiah Banda.

On 1 November 2016, the Post newspaper was placed under provisional liquidation after five former employees applied to court to have the company placed on liquidation in order to recover their terminal benefits. The Zambia Revenue Authority in June 2016 closed the Post.

M’membe was the third recipient of the Media Institute of Southern Africa’s Press Freedom Award in 1995.MISA described him as “the most persecuted journalist in his country and the rest of the region.” Previous awardees include Onesimo Makani Kabweza and Basildon Peta.In 1995, M’membe won the International Press Freedom Award of the Committee to Protect Journalists,]”an annual recognition of courageous journalism”.In 2000, he was selected by the International Press Institute as one of 50 “World Press Freedom Heroes” of the organisation’s fifty years of existence.

M’MEMBE THE SOCIALIST

Fred M’membe has been fighting for their human, political, and economic rights for more than 40 years. In 1970s as a student, he founded a socialist student newsletter. Its focus was on Zambian, international and studen politics. It was an informative and influential left-wing newsletter that called for justice and equity, and provided solidarity with the national liberation movements in southern Africa.Later, in1990, Fred was to build on this student experience by contributing to Multiparty News. This was a newsletter initiated by the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) advocating for political change in Zambia. This was before he set up The Post newspaper in July 1991. Through The Post, he created a platform where Zambians had a loud voice and fearlessly pointed out the shortcomings of the existing establishment.

M’MEMBE’S POLITICAL HISTORY
Fred M’membe, supported the liberation struggles in southern Africa and other parts of the world. He became a member of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA)–now the South African Communist Party (SACP)–in 1978. SACP became his political home during these formative years. Leading revolutionaries, such as Joe Slovo, Chris Hani, and Ben Turok, were his mentors.
In 1991, Fred M’membe participated in and gave his total support to the formation of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in Zambia. Under the coordination of Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika and Mbita Chitala, the key programmatic documents for the MMD were put together by a think tank, and a secretariat was set up. M’membe was an active contributor to this process. He participated in editing the MMD’s newsletter, Multiparty News.In 1992, Fred significantly contributed to the formulation of the programmatic documents for theAlliance for Democracy in Malawi (AFORD) under the leadership of trade union activist Chakufwa Chihana. From 1993 until 2014, M’membe continued to support and encourage the formation, as well as the work, of various political platforms in Zambia. His desire was the creation of an environment where good governance, human rights, and freedom of the press could be secured. His support for the National Party (NP) under Baldwin Nkumbula and the Patriotic Front (PF) under Michael Sata is well documented. Both parties were founded on an anti-corruption and pro-poor stance.

THE PARADOX OF CONSCIENCE AND PERSONAL SUFFERING

THE PARADOX OF CONSCIENCE AND PERSONAL SUFFERING
====================
Dear Dr. Chishimba Kambwili we have come to know you as among those within the political conscience of Zambia. Indeed when you launched NDC, a number of people particularly in the Copperbelt, saw you as a voice of reason, comfort and hope.

Many left the PF to be with you on the side of change, one of those people is Obet Kasongo, who died as he campaigned for you. Many youths were brutalized on that fateful day and you rightfully opened dockets at the police, concerning those crimes.

The journey in the opposition is a very taxing and difficult one in Zambia, especially with the current regime. There isn’t any opposition party worth their salt, that hasn’t suffered in Zambia. Nevers Mumba has had to have meetings in the bush, suffered tear gas shots, anarchy in his own party and countless arrests.

The UPND have suffered quite massively, having lost a number of their supporters, due to political killings. Yet they remain standing. They would have long gone into oblivion but their leader has become a brother to them. He has helped sustain them, keeping the party afloat in a period of 20+ years.

You too sir, have suffered quite massively, to a point where even your health became compromised. It has been a tough road. Your family whom you had successfully kept out of the political limelight, sadly and regrettably, became victims of the inhuman treatment at the hands of our police.

Sir, they have heaped you with cases and even convicted you on a useless charge, which even Sean Tembo, agreed shouldn’t have been brought up. I can only sympathize with what you have gone through.

It is true that Zambia needs change. Otherwise we wouldn’t have so many political parties opposing PF. The PF have entrenched themselves within the government machinery, such that it makes some political players, to cower and resubmit themselves in fear. Such fear or defeat though regrettable, is understandable.

The time however is now, that we need to search deep within, for that extra strength, to finish the extra mile, until we cross the line, even if nobody else is following.

Am reminded of the story of Jesus Christ that at the time of his arrest and crucifixion, all his disciples that had been with him for years, scampered. Jesus was however not surprised, he expected it. The disciples didn’t have the strength to go the extra mile. That came later, after they had the Holy Spirit in them, giving them the strength to even willingly die for Christ. They were glad to be matyred if need be.

My prayer is that you and other political players, have the courage and strength for what is really right before God and before people. It is true one day we will all stand before God almighty, to give account of our actions. Let it be said on that day that, dear Lord, we did our best to face injustice and spoke for the defenceless. We stood for what is right, even when others didn’t follow. Let it be said so on that day.

I hope my few words would meet your favorable thoughts and render some encouragement.

Thank you,

Kasololo Chisenga.

UPND Exorbitant Nomination Fees Show That HH Has No Heart For The Youth, Less Privileged – Marvin Chanda Mberi

0

By Marvin Chanda Mberi

Following the communication from the Electoral Commission of Zambia on the proposed revised fees for candidates in the upcoming coming general election, the UPND is one stakeholder that came in open disapproval of the proposed fees.

The long serving opposition vehemently objected and demanded for the user friendly fee scale for all irrespective of the financial muscle.

On 17th June, 2020, UPND Hakahinde Hichilema took it to social media and protested the new nomination fees.

He was quoted as having said, “New nomination fees totally unacceptable and an affront to the principle of Constitutional Democracy.”

He went on to say and we quote, “POLITICS SHOULD NOT BE THE PRESERVE OF THE RICH but every Zambian citizen who had a vision and the capacity to contribute to the wellbeing of Zambia must be allowed to enter the arena.”(UNDERLINING AND BOLDFACING FOR EMPHASIS ONLY)

The UPND even went greater lengthy as far as petitioning the ECZ to express their discontent on the proposed nomination fees.

Sadly, Mr Hichilema and his political party have been caught in the web of the same decision they condemned and their deeds have been established to the contrary of what they preached.

In the week coinciding with the celebration of the youth day, the nation is greeted with the disturbing news of exponentially high nomination fees for the people wishing to be adopted as candidates under the flag of UPND.
This is the deliberate ploy to technically knock out the people wishing to offer themselves for election from the race.

On the youth perspective, this is condemned in the strongest terms as it has the ability to undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

Imposing heft fees for the candidates has the ability to commercialize politics and this is exclusion of the aspirants who may not have a deeper pocket.

The deeper pocket theory in Zambian politics should not be the basis of deciding who should be the flag bearer.

If their request for the ECZ to reduce the nomination fees was made in good faith, we expected that to be their internal criteria.

It is clear, they didn’t mean what they said when they condemned the ECZ for increasing fees payable by candidates.

They were merely politicking and we urge them to take national matters seriously.

The inconsistence on national matters should their instability on serious national matters.

Every patriot has a responsibility t hold the UPND accountable and ensure they refrain from commercializing politics especially service to the nation.

We are made to assume that there is a deliberate ploy to explosively exclude the marginalized people such as the youths and women on account of not affording the high nomination fees is unacceptable.

This ought to be vacated.

LAZ deeply concerned with attacks on the Judiciary

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has that is it deeply concerned with the attacks on the Judiciary attributed to Mr. Paul Moonga who is the Patriotic Front (PF) Lusaka Province Chairperson, during a press briefing at the PF Secretariat on Friday, 5th March, 2021.

In a statement released to the media, the association said that Mr. Moonga’s sentiments have since gone viral, a situation the association feels feel needs redress.

Below is the full statement

PRESS RELEASE BY THE LAW ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA (FOR IMMEDIATE CIRCULATION TO MEDIA HOUSES)

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) is deeply concerned with the attacks on the Judiciary attributed to Mr. Paul Moonga who is the Patriotic Front (PF) Lusaka Province Chairperson, during a press briefing at the PF Secretariat on Friday, 5th March, 2021. Mr. Moonga’s sentiments have since gone viral, a situation we feel needs redress.

The Judiciary, being a creation of the Constitution, is established under Part VIII of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) No. 2 of 2016. Article 122 (1) provides that, “In the exercise of the judicial authority, the Judiciary shall be subject only to this Constitution and the law and not be subject to the control or direction of a person or
an authority.”

While we subscribe to the freedom of expression and principles of accountability which entail that any person and institution, including the Judiciary can be subject of criticism, we are particularly perturbed by the sentiments from a senior member of the ruling party as the sentiments suggest that the Judiciary is subject to the control and direction of other people, contrary to the constitutional provision highlighted above. In particular, the sentiments that the Judges are being watched by the ruling party, and the suggestion that some Constitutional Court Judges are susceptible to corruption so as to nullify the candidature of the President should a petition be filed, are not only unfortunate and detrimental to constitutionalism, but also have the potential to intimidate the Judiciary and undermine its independence.

LAZ, is duty bound to promote the Rule of Law under section 4 of the Law Association of Zambia Act, Chapter 31 of the Laws of Zambia. It is in furtherance of that mandate that LAZ strongly condemns unwarranted attacks on public institutions which are established to work independently, in furtherance of national order and governance. If such public utterances are left unchecked or requisite reprimand not effected, the country may face a quagmire where institutions risk being cowed into taking extraneous considerations in the discharge of their statutory mandates.

We therefore, call upon the PF leadership to prevail over its members to refrain from issuing unwarranted attacks against the Judiciary or indeed any other public institutions as these institutions should not be politicised in the name of serving personal interests. LAZ will engage the ruling party to register its disquiet. We also urge the Judiciary to continue discharging its mandate without fear or favour in tandem with its constitutional mandate.

Dated this 10 th day of March, 2021.

Marry Mubaiwa blasts ‘beast’ Chiwenga after 17 months without access to children

0

HARARE – Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry Mubaiwa says she has been denied access to their three young children for 17 months.

Venting out on Twitter, the 39-year-old former model described Chiwenga as a “beast” while accusing the judiciary of being “compromised”.

“I miss my children so much. Seventeen months I have been shut out completely, subjected to imprisonment by my husband to keep me away. The judiciary is compromised, these are young children. Power is not permanent,” Mubaiwa wrote on Thursday.

In another post, accompanied by a picture of Chiwenga attending a church service with their children, Mubaiwa added: “When you receive holy communion and lie to God about your intentions, and you abuse the children you say you love by denying them access to their mother for 17 months, who are you fooling? Is God silent to hypocrites? The Beast and the Abused.”

Mubaiwa and Chiwenga have three children together, two boys and a girl who are all younger than 10. She also has two other children – a girl from an earlier relationship with businessman Terry Mandizha and a daughter with former footballer husband Shingi Kawondera.

Breached … Marry Mubaiwa accused her estranged husband of sending people to destroy a wall at her Highlands office on March 1

She was arrested in 2019 after Chiwenga accused her of a plot to kill him while he was hospitalised in South Africa. She was also charged with fraud.

Chiwenga subsequently asked a court to grant him custody of their children – Tendai, Christian and Michael – after accusing Mubaiwa of drug abuse.

Mubaiwa has sought an alteration of her bail conditions to undergo urgent medical treatment in South Africa for severe lymphoedema, but she was blocked from leaving by a court.

Earlier this week, Mubaiwa accused Chiwenga of sending soldiers to intimidate her.

“My office wall in Highlands was broken down yesterday (March 1). No amount of intimidation will stop me from fighting for my children and properties. My equipment in Domboshava is being looted by armed military personnel,” she claimed.

She accused Chiwenga of “using state machinery and the judiciary to fight to fight me.”

“I have been quiet for too long. I will tell my story to whoever cares to listen,” she vowed.

George Charamba, the spokesman for the presidency, said he does not comment about “private matters”.

Bushiri Lawyer Sue South African Police Over Illegal Detention

Lawyer for Shepherd Bushiri in South Africa, Terence Baloyi, has sued South African Police Services (Saps) for R15 million following his 8 hour detention without charge earlier this month.

Baloyi confirmed the development.

Bushiri’s spokesperson, Ephraim Nyondo, also confirmed the same, adding that Baloyi has given Saps 30 days to pay the R15 million or a formal legal complaint will be filed in court.

“As a matter of fact, Mr Baloyi has on several occasions shared with the public the agony, pain and persecution he has persistently suffered after he stood up to a series of extortion pushes on Prophet Bushiri from certain Hawks personnel led by officers Phumla Mrwebi, Colonel Corrie Maritz, Du Plessis and their colleagues,” he said.

Leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering church Bushiri early this month said his instructing attorney in South Africa, Terrance Baloyi, and legal adviser, Alvin Khosa, were “unlawfully” detained by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

“On Monday, with deep shock and sadness, I learnt about how the Hawks, for eight hours, unlawfully detained my instructing attorney Mr Terrance Baloyi and my legal adviser Mr Alvin Khosa. The eight-hour unlawful detention further included an officer from independent private investigation in South Africa,” said Bushiri in a statement issued from Lilongwe, Malawi.

“The said independent private investigator is the one I once hired to investigate extortion and blackmain (blackmail) acts against me.”

Bushiri, wanted in South Africa on charges including fraud and money laundering, said the legal team was later released without charges pressed.

“It’s shocking to note that after my instructing lawyers and the private investigator who, after being unlawfully kept in custody like convicted criminals, the senior state advocates who issued the alleged warrant of arrests were nowhere to be seen and court officials (were) left with no option but to release my lawyers from custody under the banner of claiming that the police investigations are incomplete, yet we know they have been investigating since 2017. Worse, they proceeded to arrest. Clear malice, torture and harassment to the legal practitioners at its best,” said Bushiri.

“Though saddened, I am not surprised with this awful detention because it’s just an escalation and intensification of a failed scheme, by certain Hawks officers hell burnt (hell-bent) to cover up the dirt I reported against them.”

He said during his stay in South Africa, he had suffered persecution from Hawks officers who wanted to extort money from him. Bushiri has repeatedly listed the Hawks officers he accused of leading the charge against him as “Phumla Mrwebi, Colonel Corrie Maritz, Du Plessis and their colleagues”.

The Hawks are yet to respond to a query from the African News Agency (ANA) about his allegations. The preacher, however, insisted the Hawks officers were still handling his case.

Chamisa loses hope in judiciary, says turning to ‘stadium of the people’

HARARE – MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa says the judiciary is joined at the hip with Zanu PF, and his party has lost confidence that the courts can fairly arbitrate political disputes involving the parties.

Reflecting on several controversial court rulings against his party, opposition activists and human rights defenders, Chamisa said mass action now appeared the only avenue for the people to get justice.

“We have learnt our lesson where to ultimately defend the people’s vote. We have also realised that the courts are not the ultimate end, and are not the appropriate arena for the resolution of political disputes,” Chamisa said on Thursday during commemorations of the 2007 Save Zimbabwe campaign hosted by Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition.

Chamisa narrowly lost an election to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in July 2018, and his defeat was upheld by the Constitutional Court after MDC Alliance lawyers had tried to discredit the election.

In March 2020, the Constitutional Court dealt Chamisa’s party a huge blow when it ruled that he was improperly appointed deputy president of the MDC-T by Morgan Tsvangirai in 2016 and his elevation when Tsvangirai died in 2018 was therefore in breach of the MDC-T constitution.

The MDC-T was now in a coalition known as the MDC Alliance, which contested the July 2018 elections.

Acting on that judgement, Chamisa’s internal opponents jumped ship to revive the MDC-T, before claiming MDC Alliance MPs and councillors as their own. Those who resisted were recalled, with the blessing of the courts.

Dozens of opposition activists and pro-democracy campaigners are languishing in jail as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government weaponises the legal system.

Chamisa said since the courts were failing to ensure justice, “political disputes must therefore be settled in the stadium of the people.”

“That means our zones of resolving political questions of the day are going to be superintended upon by the people who are going to be umpires, the referees, but also going to be actors,” Chamisa said.

A recent report by the Zimbabwe NGO Forum revealed that the country was witnessing increased state repression under Mnangagwa’s leadership, documenting 86 cases of abductions and torture of activists in 2019 and 34 in 2020.

Outspoken activist Makomborero Haruzivishe, who is facing kidnapping charges, was recently denied bail by the Harare Magistrate’s Court.

On Thursday, MDC Alliance youth leaders Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri who are facing charges of convening an unlawful public gathering were also denied bail in what is their third arrest since last May.

Chamisa noted that this continuous clampdown on dissent by the regime, with courts offering no buffer, had made the legal system a “blocked route, with so many hazards most of them which have spelt doom of the people of Zimbabwe.”

Paul Moonga meant to intimidate ConCourt judges, says Kazabu

0

LUXON Kazabu says there is panic in the PF because some officials have realised that their preferred man, Edgar Lungu, is ineligible to run for the Republican presidency for a third term.

Kazabu, a former deputy minister in Michael Sata’s government, says wild allegations made against judges by Lusaka Province PF chairman Paul Moonga are calculated to intimidate.

Last Friday, Moonga invited journalists to his office in Lusaka to cover several of his unsubstantiated claims against judges of the Constitutional Court, in relation to President Lungu’s eligibility for this year’s elections.

He accused opposition political parties of seeking to bribe Constitutional Court judges who could disqualify President Lungu from contesting for a third time.

Moonga claimed the opposition was assembling a team of what he termed expensive lawyers to petition President Lungu’s eligibility after filing his nomination papers for the August 12 general election.

Filing in of nomination papers by presidential candidates will be done in May.

Moonga also accused the opposition of planning to pay Constitutional Court judges to rule in their favour.

He claimed that according to PF ‘intelligence reports,’ the opposition had already compiled their petition, and was just waiting to file when the time comes.

“By last year October, they (opposition) put a consortium of lawyers together waiting to go and petition the eligibility of our president once he files his nomination. May be, you have misunderstood me…,” Moonga claimed. “Our colleagues, the opposition political parties, with the alliance, with our whole intelligence report we have ourselves as a province and the whole entire country; instead of spending their time and energy mobilising their party members who would be their voters, they’re busy mobilising the most expensive lawyers who can go to court after we’ve filed our nomination, 12th of August. They’re putting up, the following day they’ll be in the courts of law fighting our president [that] he’s not eligible to stand; what a shame!”

He repeatedly referred to Malawi’s 2019 presidential election that was nullified in favour of the opposition.

Moonga warned judges that the PF was “watching” them.

He further questioned the credibility of Malawi’s judiciary.

“With those lessons from Malawi which I think the opposition are leaning on, we may go the Malawi way. They may try to buy some, but not all judges can be the same. Believing they may buy a few judges to nullify the credibility of our candidate, that’s their focus,’’ Moonga said. “So, [instead of putting] on money to grow the party, they’re busy putting on money to see whom they can corrupt; a judge to nullify our president. We are very much alive, we’re aware and we are watching all the judges in Zambia.”

He continued: “kindly, don’t (judges) fall prey to these monsters who have no known manifesto for this country.

“Don’t fall prey to these monsters who have no agenda for Zambia, whose agenda is simply to become president of Zambia at any cost. This, members of the press, my office, has this message…” said Moonga.

Kazabu called The Mast to react to Moonga’s allegations.

He advised that everybody must respect the independence of the judiciary.

“To speak the way Paul Moonga spoke borders on intimidation of judges and the courts of law. It is not correct! Why are they now resorting to intimidation?” Kazabu, the former Nkana PF member of parliament (2011 to 2016), said. “They are so confident that President Lungu is eligible for a third term. [But] it would appear there are some in PF who have now come to terms with the correct interpretation of the provision of the Constitution, in particular Article 106 (3) going on to sub six.”

He said Article 106 (3) of the Republican Constitution talked about the holding of Office of President twice.

“Holding office twice and a term of office of five years mean totally two different things. There is panic in PF because now some of them have realised that President Lungu is not eligible to stand again. The reason is simply that there is no provision for a third term,” he said.

Kazabu told PF and government officials to completely avoid threatening judges.

“But for goodness’ sake, let leaders in PF, in the government, stay away from intimidating the judges. We all agree that the judiciary enjoys independence and we should uphold that principle. Clearly, Paul Moonga in his statement meant to intimidate the judges,” noted Kazabu. “My appeal to our dear judges is that they should not stand for individuals but rather stand for their country – which is the Republic of Zambia.”

Statement By Levy Mwanawasa On The Occasion Of His Acceptance Of The Invitation TO Serve As Presidential Candidate Of MMD During The 2001 Elections

0

STATEMENT BY LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA, S.C. ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ACCEPTANCE OF THE INVITATION OF SERVE AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OF THE MOVEMENT FOR MULTIPARTY DEMOCRACY (MMD) DURING THE 2001 PRESIDENTIAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

CHAIRMAN of this Press conference, members of national executive committee, honourable ministers and deputy ministers, ladies and gentlemen.

On behalf of my wife and my family I welcome you to our humble home and thank you all for your attendance.

I have called this Press conference in order to reaffirm my already announced acceptance of the nomination by my party, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) to be its candidate for the 2001 presidential, parliamentary and local government elections.

As I make this formal acceptance address I again wish to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the President of the Party, Dr Fredrick Jacob Titus Chiluba, the National Executive Committee and the entire membership of the party for this honour bestowed on me and my family. I shall not let you down.

The decision to accept this invitation has been the most difficult I have had to make in my life. It was arrived at after a lot of soul searching and reflection, praying for God’s guidance.

I have consulted widely and intensely, as a result of which I am fully satisfied the decision I have taken is a correct one, in the national interest.

This decision represents the greatest challenge of my life, second only to when I proposed to my wife. The challenges are plentiful and diverse, comparisons will be made with past and present leadership with candidates from political parties, whether I will adopt the same leadership style.

I would ask that you give me time to establish myself in office and ask that you judge me by my performance.

When I am elected the next President of Zambia I shall have the opportunity to pursue the vision of Zambia which I shared with my colleagues when we formed the MMD in 1990.

I shall certainly consult and draw from the vast experience of the two former presidents. I shall consult extensively with various individuals, traditional leaders, groups, associations, civic society and the Church. The Church has a very important role to play in attending not only to our spiritual needs but also to provide a shoulder to cry on, compassionate and impartial in counselling.

Zambia is a Christian nation and so it shall remain.

When elected as Republican President I will ensure that existing democratic institutions are strengthened. We shall pursue legal and legislative reforms to give further authority and powers of prosecution to the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Permanent Human Rights Commission, the Drug Enforcement Commission, the tribunal created by the Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct Act and the Zambia Police Service.

It is not intended that once I am elected President, it will be the purpose of my office to conduct a witch-hunt of transgressions committed in the past, our intention is to provide a clear policy direction and establish a foundation for transparent accountable governance, and to provide an atmosphere for all organs of Government to undertake their responsibilities as required of them by law.

My Government will put top priority to issues of development and programmes aimed at poverty alleviation and job creation in order to ameliorate the high levels of poverty, hunger and unemployment some of which may be a result of the reform programmes implemented to move the economy from nationalisation to a liberalised one.

It is my intention to address this through policies intended to accelerate industrial activity, promote the manufacturing sector and reverse the decline in agriculture. There are many good things that have been under taken by our government so far. I only intend to strengthen certain areas and improve implementation.

I believe that with hardwork and commitment all these things can be achieved. We may not achieve transformation within the first five years, but at the end of the period it should be possible to show significant changes in the economy and standard of living of our people.

When I am elected as Republican President, those who will be appointed into my Government should know that the honey¬moon is over, it will be a period of self discipline, commitment and hardwork. Those who will join my Cabinet shall be expected to make commitment to handwork and selfless service.

I intend to be firm but fair in my tenure of office because this is what the people of Zambia expect.

Countrymen and women, this is not intended to be a campaign speech, but an expression of intent.

I will be in a position to expand on these issues from time to time as I get opportunity to address the various stakeholders.

Allow me to make an observation on the political activities in the country. It seems to me that this country has been bruised sufficiently, largely due to the fact that its leaders have been busy and have devoted all the their time, energy and attention to throwing mud at each other at the expense of the national development.

As a result there is too much tension in the country and this has stifled investment and development. Time has come when all that must stop. Continuing this charade amounts to betrayal of the nation.

I am confident that I shall be elected in the forthcoming elections but even if I were not, I would still call upon all of you, all of us, to say enough is enough. Let us direct our attention to the reconstruction of our country under the leadership in Government.

If you have any suggestion or are aggrieved by anything put it to ministers or even to the President, it will not do good to go on ant hill and shout derogatory remarks and insults. That way you will succeed in only making the Government defensive even if you have a good and valid point.

I want to conclude my remarks by thanking our people and party cadres for the overwhelming support an endorsement with which my selection has been received all over the country. This has given me immense encouragement. It underscores the very high hopes which the people expect of me.

It makes me determined to ensure that I do not let my people down and to double my efforts the bring relief to our long suffering people.

Thank you, God bless you all.

Ryan’s Parents Recount Their Son’s Painful Death After Being Badly Beaten By Twinpalm School Boys

0

HEARTBREAKING: RYAN’S PARENTS RECOUNT THEIR SON’S PAINFUL DEATH AFTER BEING BADLY BEATEN BY TWINPALM SCHOOL BOYS

MOTHER of late Kabulonga Boys Secondary School pupil Ryan Phiri has told the Lusaka High Court that before breathing his last, her son informed her that Elvis Nsokolo and other pupils from Twin Palm Secondary school attacked him.

This is in a matter where Nsokolo is jointly charged with three other juveniles aged between 16 and 18 for the alleged murder of Ryan on December 4, 2020 during a fight.

Testifying before justice Sharon Newa, Sharon Syambizi narrated that on the material day, she was informed by her husband that her son had been admitted to University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

Ms Syambizi said she and her husband rushed to UTH and upon arrival, she introduced herself as the mother of Ryan, to which she was asked to identify her son.

The witness said her son was on an oxygen machine and that his beddings were stained with blood as he was bleeding from his mouth and head.

“I called his name but he did not answer. I became emotional and walked out and started wondering how my son found himself in such a state when I was with him in the morning and prepared him breakfast before he went to school,” Ms Syambizi narrated whilst sobbing.

“I went to the two men that had rushed him (Ryan) to hospital to inquire about what had happened to my son and one man told me someone heard someone scream as if he was being beaten in Malata compound. The man told me that he found my son surrounded by his attackers and that he managed to whisk him away as the boys seemed to be under the influence of something and he hid him (Ryan) behind the house.”

She said she gave the two men transport money and a token of appreciation for saving her son.

“I went back inside the ward and my son had gained conciousness and when he saw me, he called out to me and I asked him what transpired. He told me that he was lynched by a mob of Twin Palm Secondary school pupils. He said they beat him with golf sticks and that he could only recognise the headboy Elvis,” Ms Syambizi narrated.

“He asked if he had his legs as he felt numb and I told him he was okay and asked him (Ryan) to rest and that we would follow his assailants when he recovered. I wanted to walk out of the ward but he stopped me and asked me to be at his bedside. I started capturing him so that I could keep evidence with hope that he would recover and sit for his grade 12 exams.”

Ms Syambizi told the court that after scanning, the nurses asked her to give Ryan some food and her son requested that she gets him cupcakes, a drink and water.

“I fed him while his father went home to collect his clothes and blankets but he sipped some supershake once and he stopped because his mouth had sores and he was bleeding. He (Ryan) had difficulty in swallowing liquids. He started tossing in his bed and I noticed his feet had become cold. I ran to the nurses to ask for stockens but they said they had none. I could not go and get him socks because he continued tossing in his bed,” Ms Syambizi recounted.

“He messed up his beddings and a nurse noticed some blood in his stool to which she asked her colleagues if such was normal and they denied. I was told to go outside to allow medical personnel to attend to him.”

Ms Syambizi said she went back inside and found medical personnel had surrounded Ryan and they were conducting a cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

“I asked the doctors if he was okay but I was chased outside. Later, one of the nurses told me that they had tried their best to resuscitate my son but their efforts proved futile and that he had died,” recounted Ms Syambizi.

Earlier, Ryan’s father, Frank Phiri, told the court that on the material day, he received a phone call from a well wisher asking him whether he was Ryan’s father to which he confirmed, and he was informed that his son had been badly beaten.

He said he asked the man to take Ryan to UTH and that he would find them there.

Phiri said he informed his wife that their son was badly beaten and that they later proceeded to UTH.

He said he found his son surrounded by doctors and that he looked very tired.

“I noticed that he was bleeding profusely from the ear. I couldn’t hold myself and went outside. I told my wife to go and see for herself. Whilst I was outside, I started asking the man who called me what exactly happened to my son. He said he saw a group of boys beating my son and he was worried that they would kill him so he decided to intervene,” Mr Phiri said.

He narrated that when Ryan gained conciousness, he told him that he was beaten by boys from Twin Palm Secondary School and that the boys used golf sticks to attack him.

Mr Phiri said his son had bruises all over his body.

“I asked Ryan if he could identify any of the boys and he told him that he knew one boy who was a head boy from Twin Palm Secondary School. He died around 18:30 hours the same day,” said Mr Phiri.

Trial continues on March 17.

President Lungu Will Be On The Ballot – Kennedy Kamba

PRESIDENT LUNGU WILL BE ON THE BALLOT,PF.

… as PF Lusaka Province Secretary Kennedy Kamba says the party will defend President Edgar Lungu from disgruntled people

The ruling Patriotic Front in Lusaka says it has no regret whatsover on the issue of defending President Edgar Lungu from malicious and frustrated individuals who are making weired claims that he is not eligible to stand.

PF Lusaka Province Secretary Kennedy Kamba says the party has stated before that the highest court of the land interpreted the law accordingly and declared that President Lungu is eligible to stand.

He said in a statement today “We know very well that people like John Sangwa who claims to be a renowned lawayer and a few individuals have formed a cartel to try by whatever means possible to drag President Lungu in the mud and try to paint him black in the eyes of Zambians when the Constitution was clear that he was eligible to stand.

“We want to state clearly here that we will defend the Presidency and President Lungu from disgruntled individuals like Sangwa,” he says.

“They are trying to set a bad precedence by deliberately attempting to misinterprete the law for their selfish interests.

Sangwa and some political party leader have been attempting to influence the minds of people into falsely believing that President Lungu was not eligible to stand in 2021,”.

Mr Kamba says all those who claim to be pundits of the law must stop these ridiculous claims that President Lungu is going for a third term and that he is not eligible to stand in 2021.

He says this issue was sorted and settled by the courts of law and the party is has moved on as it campaigns for President Lungu to be re-elected in August.

Mr Kamba says these people who are claiming that President Lungu is not eligible to stand are just trying to bring unnecessary debate and confusion because the highest courts of the land, the Constitutional Court interpreted the law accordingly and cleared President Lungu that he only served one term.

He says the 2021 bid is the second term for President Lungu and not the third term as maliciously claimed by some haters.

“Zambians know very well that in December 2018, the Constitutional Court passed judgement and it was very clear that the first Presidential tenure of President Lungu was from 25th January 2015 to 13th September 2016 and did not constitute a full term of office,” Mr Kamba says.

He also says the Constitutional Court also relied on articles 106 sub-article one and article 106 sub-article six of the 2016 Constitution and further dismissed arguments by interested parties that President Lungu is not eligible for elections as President.

He says given the background, the party we wonder why some of these so-called lecturers of law are trying to mislead the nation.

“We warn them to stop issuing incorrect statements because they are embarrassing themselves and we will not take them kindly as the PF. The law has provisions that will allow us to take action against them,” he says.

Why Don’t Catholics Call The Chapter And Verses While Reading The Bible At Mass? – Fr. Harvey Chikumbu

0

Fr. Harvey Chikumbu writes

WHY DON’T CATHOLICS CALL THE CHAPTER AND VERSES WHILE READING THE BIBLE AT MASS?

A young man approached me and asked; why is it that the Catholics do not mention the chapters and verses when they read during Mass? He then continued; our Pastor told us that it is because Catholics do not want people to know the Bible and to know the truth that is why they don’t call the chapters and verses. Well, I turned to him and smiled. Then I said to him, if you know the answer, why then do you ask me? In reply he said he was not convinced by the answer the Pastor gave him.

I then said to him; let me first correct you of one thing. Catholics do not read the Bible at Mass rather they proclaim the Bible at Mass. What does it mean to read? To read is to look and comprehend the meaning of characters or symbols that are composed, while to proclaim is to announce. What the Catholics do is to announce the word of God from the scriptures. Every Catholic ought to have the Liturgical Calendar or the Missal that contains all the readings. Therefore, every average Catholic knows where the readings of March 17 2021 are going to come from not just readings of the day or the next. As such, the catholic should have read the readings at home before coming to Mass.

When we come for Mass, only the Lector and the Priest or Deacon is allowed to proclaim from the text. Every other person is to listen to the proclamation not to read from his own text because at that moment we are not doing rehearsals. At that moment we are proclaiming or announcing the word of God and everyone is supposed to listen. That is why after the Lector has finished reading he or she concludes THE WORD OF THE LORD and after a Priest or Deacon has finish proclaiming the gospel he concludes with THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD. To mention the chapter and the verses is to tempt people to open their text and by so doing, we reduce ourselves to reading the Bible instead of proclaiming it.

What we do while proclaiming the Bible is the liturgy of the Word. Just as Ezra read in Nehemiah 8:2-9 and the people listened and even wept, so all are supposed to listen, that the WORD may sink into their hearts. The word then needs to be broken by the priest through the sermon or homily. This homily has the character of DOCERE (teaching the listener), DELECTARE (delighting the listener) and MOVERE (moving the listener), Just as it did to the people of Israel in Nehemiah 8:9. It moves the listener to an action of love, then the word becomes flesh at the table of Eucharist (John 1:14). And the flesh is consumed by the listener through the reception of the Holy Eucharist. Here the listener becomes the LIVING WORD OF GOD. Then I asked the young man, do you understand? He became speechless.

ILLEGAL SUSPENSION OF NDC COPPERBELT CHAIRPERSON–Sichula George

ILLEGAL SUSPENSION OF COPPERBELT CHAIRPERSON–Sichula George

11.03.2021 Ndola

Sam Nyirenda
Provincial Secretary–Copperbelt.

We get appalled when we see misguided statements from people who do not hold the legal mandate to do so.

Organisations by there nature are suppose to have systems and the National Democratic Congress is no exception.

Systems detach individuals from the propagation of Excessive Personal agendas, Personal egos and Personal agrindesement that creates off-shorts of dictatorial tendencies. It appears there’s been a deliberate gradual hegemony of propensity for power of control of NDC to systematically hold it to ransom when they should have been been an orderly and structured way of implementing organisational objectives. They appears to have been no rank and file hyrichecal advisory order that was inclusive, most importantly of the Vice President the National Chairperson, and the Secretary General/Secretariat of the Party let alone the National Governing Council to give guidance on matters of interest going forward.

Those who are saying ” CK is NDC and that NDC is CK ” are not being fair to our leader Chishimba Kambwili himself.

We want to remind our colleagues that the National Democratic Congress ceased to be an auto pilot individual organization to an ” Institution “.It is now an Institution. It no longer should be reduced to a movement synonymous with a single person in CK as if it’s a Lone ranger or Katemba Party.

Yes his plate may be full with issues for now that distract him from freely exercising his Political democratic rights to fulfil his ambition but that is not to say he can not go far.

It may not be the time for CK as he rightly put it with passion on the campaign for the Alliance himself that ” those who want to lead must be prepared to be led “.That He didn’t see anything wrong with him being the running mate to HH and HH being the President of the Alliance.

Undisputedly so CK is gifted with natural abilities of leadership and no one can take away that attribute from him.

As an organized institution NDC has only got one Secretary General – Bridget Attanga ( Mrs).

The letter purportedly written by one Hon. Mbulo is illegal. It should be ignored with the contempt it deserves.

It is indeed null and void as far as we are concerned as Copperbelt Province.

Our advise to Dr. Mbulo Paul Kantuta is that stop masquerading as an SG but continue mobilizing the Party in Northern/Luapula as the NDC Provincial Coordinator.

As Political leaders we should learn to orient our members with the truth.

We are very much aware of the fact that some of our members are not yet aquinted with the realities of where we come from and where we are as a Party constitutionally speaking.

The hard questions that you need to ask our leaders yourself as a senior member for the sake of the Party are :
1.Why hasn’t the NDC completed the issue of the Convention up to now if indeed you are serious about participating in the August Elections as an entity NDC Party.

2.If at all the other Provinces have not completed the Primaries the question is why haven’t they completed?

3. Why were the members of the National Governing Council discouraged from holding the normal policy making decisions for a longtime when we’re at a critical time of preparations for Elections.

As Copperbelt we are determined to remain in the Alliance. The original decision of joining the Alliance was a wise decision that has the mass support of many Zambians who want this great Country to once again be reunited and begin to develop.

Honorable Mbulo Why haven’t you quoted a single clause from the NDC constitution if at all you had one to justify your actions.

This is not the time for you leaders who are enlightened to bury your heads in the sand.

CK is also a human being who has feelings just like any of us.
When he is faced with challenges we all need to understand the predicament and be honest with our leader.
We do not need to pretend as if things were okay any more.

He clearly indicated that he wasn’t interested in the Alliance well before the Alliance could conclude it’s consultations. That in itself gave us enough direction

PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE : Christopher Kang’ombe

PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE

Name: Christopher Kang’ombe
Age: 37
Party: Patriotic Front (PF)
Constituency: Kamfinsa
Province: Copperbelt

Born on 25th December 1984, Christopher Kang’ombe is an engineer by profession and currently, he is Kitwe City Council Mayor.
His desire to improve the students’ welfare led Kang’ombe to compete for a leadership position at the Copperbelt University in Kitwe, when he was a student pursuing his engineering career. Kang’ombe was elected as Copperbelt University Union President at the age of 21 in 2006.

That same year, while still studying for his mechanical engineering degree, Mr. Kang’ombe ran and won national elections as a local government councillor for Riverside Ward, Kwacha Constituency of Kitwe, which includes the university town of Kitwe. He became the first university student to be elected a councillor in Zambia.

In 2011, he was re-elected. In his campaign, he promised to increase economic opportunities, improve infrastructure, particularly roads and the provision of street lights.

In 2016, Mr. Kang’ombe was elected as Kitwe’s first executive mayor under a new local government structure. For just being able to canvass for votes and win a competitive mayoral position, he cemented his reputation as an astute young politician and his party thereafter nominated him for President of the Local Government Association of Zambia.

Before the election, he had played a crucial role in convincing the central government to construct a bridge in his area to link it to a nearby farming community.

Now 37 years old, Mr. Kang’ombe heads the country’s association of local governments, which comprises all city and town councils in the country. His effective leadership skills are anchored on his ability to understand people’s problems and articulate solutions.

For example, when the city was overwhelmed with street vendors displaying their wares in the streets, he helped convince them to move to designated trading areas, averting incessant police arrests. As a student union leader, he encouraged the university authorities to expand their range of courses, especially in the schools of business and forestry.

Navigating Zambia’s highly charged political atmosphere is something that Mr. Kang’ombe appears to have mastered. In Zambia, as in many African countries, partisan politics can sometimes involve personal attacks and mudslinging. His 2013 memoir titled “Students Reclaim a Place in Society” powerfully encapsulates a message of the leadership role of the youth in society. The foreword to the book was written by Zambia’s former president, the late Michael Sata, who bemoaned the limited role students were playing in national development.

On how he goes about his duties, Mr. Kang’ombe says: “I make sure I am accessible to people of the city and as such my schedule is designed so that every afternoon of every working day is dedicated to meeting citizens who wish to see me on any issue that they need addressed.” It is this novel leadership style that has earned him bipartisan support.

The primary role of local councils is to provide basic services for the under privileged, he says. Mr. Kang’ombe has identified proper land allocation, among others, as a priority area.

A key factor about youth leadership is that youth issues also become a priority. For example, Mr. Kang’ombe wants to ensure the revival of recreational facilities and establishment of new ones for youths. He is also organizing young people into small cooperatives for easy access to financing for business.

As head of Zambia’s local government association, the young mayor has had an opportunity to engage with colleagues in other countries under the aegis of the United Cities of Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA). The association meets regularly to devise solutions to development issues in Africa, such as how to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote efficiency in local governments.
Married with two children, Mr. Kang’ombe attributes his achievements to life’s lessons learned during his formative years at the university. He learned that beyond acquiring a certificate, concepts taught in class could be applied in everyday life. He also developed an appreciation of the role that public service can play in improving people’s lives.

His message to other youths is: “Now is our time as young people to achieve and if there is anything that fellow young people can learn from my experience, it is that anything is possible.”

In the coming 2021 elections, Kang’ombe seek an adoption certificate from the Patriotic Front (PF) in Kamfinsa Constituency. However, he was once elected as PF Copperbelt Province Vice Chairperson in a tightly contested intra-party election, before he was suspended by the PF Secretariat.

Meanwhile, he dreams of becoming President of Zambia at some point in his life

We shall join Sangwa, others in petitioning Lungu’s eligibility – Chipenzi

0

MCDONALD Chipenzi says President Edgar Lungu’s attempt to manipulate the Constitution and contest elections for a third time is evil and must be stopped by any person interested in constitutionalism.

Lungu was sworn-in as Zambia’s sixth President at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday, January 25, 2015. He was 59.

After August 11, 2016, President Lungu was re-elected with 1,860,877 votes (50.35 per cent), against UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s 1,760, 347 votes (47.63 per cent) – a difference of 100,530 votes.

Hichilema disputed the result and sought legal intervention in the Constitutional Court of Zambia.

However, the court dismissed Hichilema’s presidential petition on a technicality on September 5, 2016.

President Lungu was, for a second time, sworn-in on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at the venue for his first inauguration.

Article 106(3) of the Constitution of Zambia prevents a person who has twice held the Office of President from standing again for that office.

Chipenzi, the executive director of Governance, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services (GEARS) Initiative Zambia, advised President Lungu to listen: “and listen attentively” to his fellow lawyers like John Sangwa, Dr Fred M’membe, Elias Chipimo among others, regarding his desire to re-contest presidential election for the 3rd time in a row.

He said the fact that legal minds continue to advise him that he would be committing a treasonable offence to offer himself for nomination, when he is ineligible, was enough advice to heed to and avoid being charged after his term office is done.

“Let him go and rest after August 12 general election, instead of hiding under the ConCourt judgment which did not even concern him,” Chipenzi said, in a statement on Wednesday.

He promised President Lungu and his backers that should he insist into filing in his presidential nomination papers for the August 12 general election, “we shall all join John Sangwa and others in petitioning President Lungu’s eligibility in court.”

“[We want to] put it on record that he does not qualify, so that when he leaves office, whenever that will be, he is brought to account,” he said, while hoping that Zambia must be moving towards breaking the circle of arresting her former Presidents. “But if this drunkenness with power and authority continues and their conduct that leaves much to be desired persists, then the perpetuation of this circle is guaranteed.”

Chipenzi said President Lungu has held office twice and that he could not blindfold Zambians that he had only served for one term, using the ConCourt judgment, “which never was to challenge his nomination.”

He said a nomination challenge could only be done after one had validly been nominated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), and not before.

Chipenzi said the ECZ ought to make the presidential nomination form public for the public to scrutinise whether the provision of Article 106(3), on holding office twice, was one of the disqualification in the nomination process.

“Nominations forms must not be held and kept in secrecy by the ECZ. They must be public documents for all to see and scrutinise whether some of the people vying for those positions qualify and help in involving the public in the vetting system of those vying for public offices,” Chipenzi said. “Challenging candidates after nomination or election must not be the preserve of the competing or losing candidates but all Zambians, once the nomination forms are made public to all to scrutinise.”

He said the public must know what rules applied to candidates who were vying for various elective public positions.

Chipenzi said such public disclosure of rules for candidates should include presidential candidates for members of the public to defend the Constitution from being abrogated, violated and overthrown by: “unscrupulous individuals, as instructed by Article 2 of the Republican Constitution.”

“Therefore, we reiterate the call on President Lungu not to listen to bamushanina ubwali (bootlickers). They are a political and democratic danger and menace,” said Chipenzi. “We say no to President Lungu’s manipulation of the Constitution…It is evil and must be stopped by any person in the business of promoting constitutionalism.”

MMD CAN’T ESCAPE PF ALLIANCE TALKS…but I’m on the side of suffering Zambians – Nevers Mumba

0

MMD president Nevers Mumba says if the party’s discussion, for a possible alliance with the PF, takes a route that incorporates the plight for most Zambians, then he is game for it.

He featured on a special interview programme on Diamond TV on Tuesday night.

Mumba, however, stressed that he is on the side of Zambians, who are overwhelmed with socio-economic despair.

He said he did have a position, on whether or not to go into an alliance with the PF, but that such a position would be expressed fully in the MMD’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting and at the March 20 national convention.

“If the National Executive Committee decides that we go with the Patriotic Front or any other political party, that becomes our preference,” Mumba said. “But as I speak right now we are going to make sure we debate it [and] look at how that decision will benefit the Zambian people, to come out of the challenges that we are facing as a nation.”

He noted that the MMD rank and file would assess how its contribution to an alliance could bring about the hope that Zambians were yearning for.

“These are the issues that are going to be under discussion during our convention. I’m sure it will be a worthwhile venture for us and I think we’ll come out with the right decision and we are going to make the nation aware of the decision that we are going to make,” he said.

Asked by co-interviewer, Costa Mwansa, to categorically say if there was currently the option of an alliance with the PF on the table, Mumba responded that: “we have not met as a party to discuss the alliance with the Patriotic Front.”

“That’s why it’s difficult for me to act like the champion of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy. But the moment we sit down and talk about it, we’ll let the nation know,” he said.

“I’m just a leader [of the MMD and] MMD operates the same way for the past 30 years. The [party] president is simply the chairman of his colleagues. A decision that is collectively made… That’s why we have been winning cases in court under my leadership; it’s because I respect the collective agreement and arrangement of my party.”

Mumba reiterated that once the topic to do with an alliance with the PF was tabled, “then we’ll be able to say this is our position.”

“But yes, there have been some proposals that have come to us about the Patriotic Front and we have told our colleagues that that can only come on the table of the National Executive Committee and the convention, and not Nevers Mumba alone,” he explained, adding that conversations of alliances were now topical in all political parties, ahead of the August 12 elections. “We can’t escape the discussion on alliances. It’s on everyone’s mouth; it’s in the UPND, NDC, ADD, Patriotic Front. I don’t know why people think it should not be in the Movement for Multiparty Democracy.”

Mumba also indicated that his preoccupation had been to make the MMD a viable force, now that all its provincial and district leaderships were in place.

He said if the MMD decided to go into an alliance with the PF, its NEC would consider every bit of the situation, to ensure that whatever happened, going forward, was going to benefit ordinary Zambians.

“I would do nothing as Nevers Mumba to selfishly serve my interests. I will never do it! I have had a lot of opportunities to get that done but I’m on the side of the Zambian people,” he said. “I’m on the side of the tears of the suffering Zambian people. I’m on the side of the families that are broken down because they can’t pay their bills and put food on the table.”

Mumba stressed that: “I’ll always be on the side of Zambian people.”

“So, if our discussion with our colleagues takes these issues into consideration, then I’m game. But at the moment we are going to the convention to choose a president who is also a presidential candidate,” said Mumba. “We are not afraid to go into an alliance with the Patriotic Front, as long as we line up the things that I have talked about. I’m very comfortable with the processes of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy to reach a decision as important as that of an alliance. What we’ll not do is to be like a bush party that does not have a system in which it can arrive at such an important decision.”

Scientists want to send 6.7M sperm samples to the moon

0

Scientists have begun to lay plans for repopulation, starting with a sperm bank — on the moon.

In what they’re calling a “modern global insurance policy,” mechanical engineers have proposed that humans establish a repository of reproductive cells — sperm and ova — from 6.7 million of Earth’s species, including humans.

And the proposed bank, or “ark,” would be beneath the moon’s surface.

As our planet faces natural disasters, drought, asteroids and the potential for nuclear war — to name a few troubles — scientists say that humans must set their sights on space travel to preserve life as we know it.

“Earth is naturally a volatile environment,” said study author Jekan Thanga, whose team at the University of Arizona submitted their report, “Lunar Pits and Lava Tubes for a Modern Ark,” at the annual Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Aerospace Conference on Saturday.

Due to the planet’s instability, he said, an Earth-based repository would leave specimens vulnerable. As such, Thanga proposed jumpstarting a planetary exodus of sorts by founding a human seed vault on the moon as soon as possible. It would store reproductive cells in recently discovered lunar “pits” from which scientists believe lava once flowed billions of years ago.

The so-called “ark,” according to Thanga’s presentation, would then cryogenically preserve various species in the event of global disaster. “We can still save them until the tech advances to then reintroduce these species — in other words, save them for another day,” he said.

The pits also are the perfect size for cell storage, according to Thanga. They go down 80 to 100 meters underground and “provide readymade shelter from the surface of the moon,” which endures “major temperature swings,” as well as threats from meteorites and radiation.

Thanga said that many plants and animals are “seriously endangered” and cited the eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Toba 75,000 years ago as a reason for worry, saying it “caused a 1,000-year cooling period and, according to some, aligns with an estimated drop in human diversity.” He sees a current-day parallel “due to human activity and other factors that we fully don’t understand,” he said, adding that already “there’s been rapid losses over the last few decades.”

The “ark” concept is already being employed at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault — housing plant seeds, that is — on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Circle, where scientists say the massive stone structure can endure, undisturbed by humans or the elements. There are over 992,000 unique samples, with each containing an average of 500 seeds.

Thanga added that he was “surprised” by how “cost-effective” the mission could be, according to his “back-of-an-envelope” estimations. To transport 50 samples of each [6.7 million target] species would take 250 rocket launches. By comparison, 40 launches were required to build the International Space Station, which sits in low-Earth orbit — far closer than the moon.

“It’s not crazy big,” Thanga insisted. “We were a little bit surprised about that.” -nypost

ECL TO POLITICALLY BURY ZAMBIA’S MOST REJECTED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE HH – Marvin Chanda Mberi

0

By Marvin Chanda Mberi

Most rejected Presidential candidate, Hakainde Hichilema is self pronounced as omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, a demi-god and this is evident from his well documented failure to work with other political parties.

As a matter of fact, HH is the most rejected Presidential candidate and he will go in history as the most rejected Presidential candidate in the history of Zambia.

His failed political associations have been made with subjectivity that he has the monopoly of political alternatives thus he should prevail over the collective wisdom of the majority partners in the previous alliances.

If we look critically at his political record sofar, it is so poor to an extent that many of his followers have even been despaired and opted to defect to a more sane, and visionary party, the Partriotic Front (PF).

He has moved with seasons and has attempted to rebrand his name with the hope of hoodwinking the unsuspecting political audience.

During 2006 Presidential elections, he proudly called himself ‘a fresh minded president’ and lost without shame and he attempted to use his then young age to manipulate his ascendancy to the highest office;

During 2008 presidential elections, he pompously referred to himself as ‘man of the moment’ but the Zambian people rejected him with contempt he deserved as he emerged in a distant third with insignificant votes mostly from his regional block.

During 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections, Mr. Know-it-all nicknamed himself ‘Zambian Obama’ but lost the elections lamentablely to President Sata whom he flagrantly criticized and despised on account of his old age and humble level of education.

Still with his mind and heart full of nothing but ego, the 6 times loser refered himself during 2015 Presidential elections as ‘Moses Wanomba’ but again the reasonable people of Zambia rejected him and opted for Mr. Micheal Chilufya Sata (may his soul rest in peace)’s successor Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

As if it was not enough, with his political pomposity and arrogance, he thought he would be President for the majority being a minority leader and this time attempted to manipulate the unsuspecting political bigwigs from the Northern block.

There came 2016 General elections, with his foolhardy, nicknamed himself ‘Aleisa Aleisa’ but again for the 6th time, he was rejected by the majority Zambians and instead chose the able and humble leader, His Excellency the sitting president Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu who was constitutionally elected.

Now, we are in the year 2021 and the scent of general elections can be smelled, HH, with his mind and heart full of nothing but ego and pride, has again for the last time nicknamed himself ‘Bally Pamunyoko’ and because he has run out of things to tell the people of Zambia, ended up insulting them and this marks the end of his political career.

Hichilema’s self centredness and empty pride will forever cost and subsequently end his political career after 12th August General elections.

Perhaps the inconsistency in deciding the appropriate nickname explains his inconsistencies on matters of national interest.

This is why we are not surprised that he would in the morning from his bedside wake and post on his social media pages asking Government to provide a bus for CBU students.

The same day if the Government or government officials through their partners mobilize a bus for students, he summer sorts and condemns the answered plea he passionately pleaded Government to act.

Requirement for Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent

0

By Isaac Mwanza

Introduction

Once again, we are in an election year and the requirement of a Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent to contest either a presidential, parliamentary or local government election has emerged but this time around with a final and decisive 144-page decision delivered on 10th March, 2021 by the Constitutional Court, the highest court of the land on constitutional matters. What are the implications of this judgment on the requirement of a Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent?

*Brief facts of the case*
Bizwayo Newton Nkunika, a losing parliamentary candidate for Lundazi Central in the elections held on 11th August, 2016, challenged the continued holding of office by the Respondent, Lawrence Nyirenda, as member of Parliament for Lundazi Central on the ground that he did not meet the minimum academic qualifications as prescribed under Article 70(1)(d) of the Constitution of Zambia. He also alleged that the Electoral Commission of Zambia breached the Constitution by allowing Mr. Nyirenda to contest the Lundazi Central Constituency seat without meeting the minimum academic qualification.

Mr Nkunika denied the allegations by stating that he was the holder of qualification equivalent to Grade 12 Certificate. At the time of filing his nomination, he had a General Certificate of Education (G.C.E) Examinations of 2013 from the Examinations Council of Zambia, a Zambia National Service Certificate of Military Training, Computer Course Certificate, Theory of Music Certificate and Theological Tutors Certificate.
The Court held that:

(i) The use of the words “has obtained” in Article 70(1)(d) means a candidate’s minimum qualifications must be in place at the time at the time of nomination and election.
(ii) The term “Grade 12 Certificate” in Article 70(1)(d) of the Constitution is synonymous to the term “School Certificate”, a certificate awarded to persons who pass in a minimum of six (6) subjects including English Language and one of the six subjects should be at a credit level.

(iii) The term “equivalent” to Grade 12 Certificate as envisaged in Article 70(1)(d) of the Constitution relates to qualifications that are comparable in value, amount, meaning and functions and are neither inferior nor superior to a School Certificate. The qualifications may include academic qualifications that have been obtained in other jurisdiction but which are equivalent to a School Certificate in Zambia.

(iv) A Grade 12 Certificate of Education (GCE) as envisaged in under Article 70(1)(d) of the Constitution if the number of subjects passed and grades obtained satisfy the requirement for obtaining a School Certificate; A candidate must have a pass in at least six (6) subjects including English language or at least five (5) subjects one of which must be a credit or better.

(v) A tertiary, vocational, craft, trade or apprenticeship certificate is not equivalent to a Grade 12 Certificate (School Certificate) as it is not comparable in value, amount, meaning and functions to a Grade twelve (12) Certificate.

*Why was Lawrence Nyirenda not disqualified?*
At the time of filing of nominations, there was no clear understanding of what constituted a Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent. Furthermore, the High Court, in the case of Sibongile Zulu v. Attorney General, had also defined what was considered “equivalent”, the definition which has now been overruled by the Constitutional Court.

In May 2021 elections, the Commission there shall be rigorous requirement to ensure those who have the GCE Certificates ensure that those certificates conform to the equivalent as defined by the Court. What about the other higher qualifications which persons may have obtained, can they be deemed as equivalent to the GCE? The Court was clear that the equivalent was that the qualifications may include academic qualifications that have been obtained in other jurisdiction but which are equivalent to a School Certificate in Zambia, those qualifications must neither be inferior nor superior to a School Certificate issued in Zambia.
Interestingly, even tertiary, vocational, craft, trade or apprenticeship certificate are not equivalent to a Grade 12 Certificate (School Certificate) as they are not comparable in value, amount, meaning and functions to a Grade twelve (12) Certificate

DR CHISHIMBA KAMBWILI HAS MADE A VERY SHARP MOVE FOR HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY.

Chingola 11th March 2021

George Sichula
NDC COPPERBELT PROVINCE CHAIRMAN

I feel sad to see how some people are struggling to understand the former NDC interim President. As far as we are concerned, he has made a very brilliant move for himself and his family. Any reasonable parent and husband would do that. If I may ask,What do you want him to do/say to the Zambian people? Anyway, you need political discernment to understand this.

Our brother has been having very serious cases which took him to prison for a month and currently surviving on an appeal. An appeal is not an acquittal. This is too dangerous for him and his family. I remember him issuing out a statement to complain that Zambians kept quiet when he battled it alone. He has a family to look after. We all know that if he supports the PF then his cases will be dropped, If he supports the Alliance he will straight go to prison. Between the two, I can also choose my freedom. Boma in boma bane. Bare with him for once. Kuti mwaletelela umunenu. Politics in Africa are very dirty.

Not long ago, CK complained about being fixed in terms of businesses, legal charges and finances, of which he is okey now as we speak. You will notice that all the right thinking NDC members have given CK space because the battle he is in is not a small battle. The PF Government has promised him freedom if he disturbilises the Alliance. This we all know. If I were CK I would go quiet and avoid unnecessary entanglements politically. There is still hope for him in future and not now the way things stand.

Our support for the Alliance is not in anyway a betrayal to CK. Himself knows this. Are you telling me that the whole MCC members; the acting President Mr Rikki Akafumba who has always stood with him throughout his court sessions, the SG madam Atanga, the National Chairman Fr Luonde, Roan MP hon Chishala, acting Veep and former spokes person for CK Mr Edward Mumbai, King G and almost all the structures countryside all hate our brother? Not really! He is our brother and we do sympathize with him except We do not agree with him on the Alliance. We are not worried in anyway because we know that many people take time to understand legal matters.

I feel for the blind followers who are in the dark. Our message for now is that let’s give people enough time to understand the current happenings. I am also happy to announce that a lot have come on board and are fully supporting our timely decision to rally behind the UPND Alliance. We have hence forth received a good number of aspiring candidates. Let the Zambian people win through this Alliance. We are not supporting individuals this time around.

The loot is haunting the PF, they can’t hide it anymore – Fr Luonde NDC Party National Chairperson

The loot is haunting the PF, they can’t hide it anymore – Fr Luonde NDC Party National Chairperson

NDC national chairperson Richard Luonde has charged that because of their preoccupation with stealing, PF leaders do not read history.

Fr Luonde, in a statement, said if President Edgar Lungu and team had read about the struggles Dr Kenneth Kaunda and his colleagues went through, they would not have plundered the wealth of “our country without any fear”.

“All this struggle our forefathers came out and fought for is now being diluted and slowly evaporating. The reason is that most of those in leadership today have no clue about what KK and his comrades struggled for,” he said. “They have not read the history of their struggle or have simply ignored it because thieves do not read, they just plan how they are going to steal; this is why they are caught in their tracks.”

Luonde compared the current government to that of colonialists.

“When you hear today Zambians mourning and lamenting that colonialists were better than the current conditions we are in today, it is not that they want colonialists to come back, no. They are simply saying that there is no difference between them and the current government. Independence in poverty is not different from colonialism,” he said. “And then some idiot wants us to keep quiet and sit in the terraces while they destroy our beloved nation! Mubepelefye ba kazolo, te Zambia yenu mweka (You are deceiving yourselves, you thieves. Zambia is not yours alone). Dr Kenneth Kaunda, our first Republican president and his friends coming from every tribe and corners of Zambia sacrificed for the freedom of our great nation.”

He said the founding fathers soldiered on for they knew and believed in what their struggle was for.

“Whether they were to achieve it or not they would have set the motion for the struggle and others would have completed it,” Fr Luonde said. “Let’s briefly refer to comrade Nelson Mandela. He too and his other comrades embarked on the same journey in apartheid South Africa to bring freedom to their country. He ended up spending 27 years in prison, so were many of his comrades.

A clear show that those who struggle for the truth achieve it in the end no matter how much they suffer, get insulted, humiliated, imprisoned and ridiculed, in the end they achieve.”

And Fr Luonde gave accolades to Dr Kaunda, saying “they never looked at themselves but our future”.

“And now those in PF have come with all their poverty of the mind, spirit and soul, to take away every little thing that ever remained in this country. And the loot is haunting them, so they can’t hide it anymore. Instead, they start throwing it around like rotten tomatoes,” said Fr Luonde. “Dr Kaunda and his comrades never just looked at the present (their time) but at the future of not just their families but of the nation and those to live after them, hence their struggle. That is how leaders are supposed to be, not these criminals we have masquerading as leaders. PF are thieves to the core, and whoever is aggrieved can hang themselves

A woman shot dead her ex-boyfriend because he refused to pay for her breast surgery, it’s claimed.

Cristina D’Avila Teixeira Rodrigues, 24, was arrested in Brazil for allegedly executing the businessman with a shot to the back of the head.

She handed herself into police in the city of Manaus on March 8, three days after the alleged crime.

The victim, Paulo Roberto Moraes Teixeira Junior, 29, owned an internet installation company, where he met his former partner.

A military police report he was fatally shot on Friday afternoon with a .380 calibre pistol.

Paulo Roberto was rushed to hospital, but died on March 7.

According to Rodrigo, the victim’s brother, Rodrigues killed her ex because he refused to pay for her silicone breast implants, which can cost around £1,300 ($1,800) in Brazil.

He told local media: “He gave her a car, a job, money.

“She wanted silicone, but in times of pandemic, the company was cutting costs and he could not give her this surgery.

“They fought a lot because of this on the night she took my brother’s life.”
The victim’s sister, Roberta, told local media her brother employed her at his company and they had a year-and-a-half-long relationship.

“She wanted silicone, but in times of pandemic, the company was cutting costs and he could not give her this surgery.”

She said: “From what we saw, she was just with him out of self-interest. She liked to show off, but she never posted anything about him.

“It seems he discovered something serious about her and they broke up.”

According to Roberta, the suspect went to the victim’s house and said she wanted to speak to him.

Hours later, his family was told he had been shot.

She said: “She still had access. Before arriving, she switched off the house’s cameras.

“She premeditated everything.

“When she fired the shot, she walked out and called her mother to tell her.

“Her mother told my brother and the two of them went there. My brother arrived and saw him dying in the kitchen.”

Rodrigues fled after the shooting, but handed herself in to police accompanied by lawyers after an arrest warrant was issued for her.

“From what we saw, she was just with him out of self-interest.”

She appeared with a lawyer at the Specialized Homicide Police and Kidnappings (DEHS) on Monday.

According to Diario Manauara, she was arrested, but claimed the shooting was accidental.

Chief Marilia Campello, deputy of DEHS, said: “Cristina confessed to the crime, but claimed she had no intention of killing Paulo Roberto.

“She said the businessman had two firearms, one in the house and the other in the car.

UK says it will return $5.8m of Nigerian government funds stolen by governor

The United Kingdom will return to Nigeria $5.8 million which was stolen by a governor from the oil-rich Delta state. The money was stolen by James Ibori, who was governor of the oil-producing state from 1999 to 2019, and his associates.

Ibori, once a powerful figure in Nigeria, pleaded guilty at London’s Southwark Crown Court in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering and was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He, however, spent 4 years behind bars for using public funds to buy luxury homes, top-of-the-range cars, and a private jet.

This is the first time that money recovered from criminals will be returned to Nigeria since an agreement was signed in 2016, said UK authorities. It also comes on the heels of mounting criticism against the UK that it has become a safe haven for stolen cash from Africa.

“The UK and Nigerian governments have signed an agreement today (Tuesday 9 March) to send £4.2 million (2.2 billion Naira) of stolen funds recovered by UK agencies back to Nigeria, where it will be spent on key infrastructure and building works for the Nigerian people,” the UK Home Office said in a statement.

The UK Minister for Africa, James Duddridge, praised the move saying the recovery will support vital infrastructure and building works in Nigeria.

“When money is stolen from public funds it hits the poorest communities the hardest and means money can’t be spent where it’s most needed,” he said. “The UK and Nigeria will continue to work together to tackle crime and corruption across our nations.”

The Home Office Minister, Baroness Williams, said the move was a significant moment in the fight against illicit finance wherever it is found.

“Recovering the proceeds of crime is a critical part of our fight against serious crime and this sends a clear message to criminals that we will relentlessly pursue them, their assets and their money,” he said.

On his part, Nigeria’s attorney general, Abubakar Malami said the funds will be invested in infrastructure projects. “I am confident that both the Nigerian and British governments remain committed to all affirmative actions to combat corruption … [and] illicit financial flows,” Malami said at a ceremony at which officials from the two countries signed an agreement on the return of the funds, according to Aljazeera.

Nigeria is one of the countries in the world consistently ranking low on the global corruption perception index. It ranks 149th out of 180 countries. Various moves to improve the country’s corruption image have not been successful.

Ibori, according to the BBC, has a long history of thievery. He was first convicted in 1991 for stealing from a DYI store he worked for as a cashier. Upon his return to Nigeria, he altered his birth certificate to hide his UK conviction; this enabled him to run for Delta State governor.

The British authorities took interest in him after he purchased a private jet through his solicitors in London, according to the BBC. He was arrested in 2010 in Dubai and extradited to the UK where he was jailed on 10 counts of fraud worth a total of nearly £50m (about 69 million dollars now) in 2012.

He served for four years and when was released, he sued the UK Home Office in Nigeria for unlawful detention. He won the case but was awarded nearly $1.5 million compensation.

15-yr-old Nigerian student shares how she beat US, UK, China to win global math competition

Nigerian teenager Faith Odunsi is putting the West African nation on the map after winning the Global Open Mathematics competition. She beat other contestants from Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States to emerge the winner with 40 points, with the second runner tailing her with 10 points.

Odunsi, as the winner, walked away with $1000 which will be presented in an official ceremony soon. The 15-year-old is a final year high school student at the Ambassadors School, Ota Ogun State whose father is a medical doctor and mother, a businesswoman. Her parents are extremely proud of her win and she claims to have gotten her mathematics genes from her father.

According to her, the first stage of the tournament was the most difficult because she was not accustomed to the computer-based test. She scored 66 points in both the first and second rounds which were all CBT then progressed to the quarter and semi-finals held on Microsoft teams, acing that round as well.

Throughout the tournament, Odunsi said she did not think herself a winner till she answered more questions correctly in the final round. “My heart raced but I felt relieved,” she told The Punch.

Odunsi did not want her preparations for the tournament to interfere with that of her regular classes. “It takes a village to train a child” is not just an African proverb but a concept that works. The high schooler prepared for the competition with the help of her teacher. He coached her after regular classes ended.

When the competition date got closer, she had to dedicate more time to get ready sometimes studying at night from 11 pm to midnight.

The Global Open Mathematics competition is just one of many competitions the young genius has participated in. She has been participating in the national Olympiad since she was in junior high school, among others.

“I have also taken part in Kangourou Sans Frontieres, South African mathematics Olympiad, American Mathematics Competition, and Pan-African mathematics Olympiad. For the national Olympiad, I was made the Queen of Mathematics from JSS3 to SS2.

“For the South African Mathematics Olympiad, I got medals. I got a silver medal in the Pan-African mathematics Olympiad in 2019. I was also made an ambassador of my school.”

Again in 2019, she set a record in the Cowbellpedia competition answering 19 questions in seconds.

The Ambassadors School invests in its students who take part in competitions. For instance, the school holds extra classes for all participants preparing for competitions. Students are generally trained to solve mathematical questions mentally with little to no errors.

The young achiever wants to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering abroad because she believes there will be enough structures in place there to enhance the learning experience.

Many young girls tend to shy away from mathematics but not Odunsi. She said mathematics is her favorite subject although she has an interest in information and communications technology. She explained that math is all about getting the concept and applying the formula when solving other questions. In her words, “it is about using your brains and basic logical reasoning.”

Odunsi is still a teenager who loves to do other things aside from studying and winning competitions. She said academic work by no means affects her social skills and she is into sports as well.

How two Black people took down Piers Morgan from British TV after Meghan Markle interview

The news of Piers Morgan leaving his job as co-host of the highly-rated Good Morning Britain show is already being treated across the pond in the United States as an episode of the draconian malpractice that is called Cancel Culture.

In England and the rest of the United Kingdom too, the feeling is not very different as the Wizard of Oz-esque concept has been mentioned in the wake of Morgan’s departure. In truth, we do not know if he quit or was giving his marching orders – ITV, the network, just said the parties ‘parted ways’.

One would suppose that any observer interprets these detail-deficient announcements according to the observer’s biases. Cancel Culture just happens to be the favorite target of those who have in the last decade felt they are impeded in their efforts of taking free speech to experimental extremities, causing both emotional and physical harm to some in a liberal society. That is not to suggest that there is no movement to stop prevent others whose opinions are unpopular from taking to certain platforms.

But the opposition to what is thought to be Cancel Culture is a whole package. In the “Stop Cancel Culture” camp, there are good-faith arguments and good-faith proponents for the right to free speech. There is also in this camp, those who take advantage of free speech just to push half-truths, lies, homophobia, misogyny and racism among others. Often, these bad faith elements overshadow those who hope free-speech is employed towards some dignified end.

Morgan himself was a fierce advocate of free speech. It does not seem like his media career is over and thus, there is no need to bet against the expectation that he will be back to his advocacy, probably soon. But the irony of his exit is that Morgan was involved in two separate shouting matches with two Black people over anti-Black racism in British society, which he has constantly moved to play down. After the telecast of Oprah Winfrey’s tell-all interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the point of racism, which reared its head, was not going to escape media rumination.

Morgan called Markle’s accusations of racism in the British royal family “lies”. He said the woman is conniving with her husband to disgrace not just the British monarchy but the monarch too. His exact words were “absolutely disgraceful betrayal”, while singling out Markle as the mastermind behind a capricious palace intrigue.

No one was surprised Morgan went after Markle. He has made it abundantly clear through the last few years that he absolutely loathes her. But did he hate her that much that he would underplay accusations of racism? That he would not feign the vaguest concern over the allegation that a royal once joked about what shade of skin color Markle and Harry’s baby will be?

Good Morning Britain invited Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, a regular guest on the show who is an academic and an activist. What producers thought would make for good TV also turned into an education for the confrontational and dismissive Morgan.

“I wish to God one day you even surprise me. You constantly use your platform as a wealthy, white, privileged man with power and influence to aggravate and escalate the bigoted sexist, racist and misogynist attacks on Meghan Markle. And you do it so shamelessly,” Mos-Shogbamimu told an interrupting Morgan.

It was loud and unorderly but it was one of the few times in his TV career that the former CNN host had been challenged on his presuppositions about racism. Morgan often prefers to assume the role of a know-it-all and he is not shy to tell an interviewee what is on his mind. Largely, it is a style you can appreciate from a journalist. But when a rich white man believes they know it all about anti-Black racism, there occurs an atmosphere that is difficult to navigate. And Morgan dismisses a lot, any sentiments about race that he finds unworthy.

To get a better picture of what he feels about racism, you would have to know that Morgan is a journalist who does not believe Donald Trump is racist and points to Trump’s friendships with Don King and Muhammad Ali as proof on non-racism.

As if he had not had enough education from Mos-Shogbamimu, Morgan had on Tuesday, Alex Beresford, the weather news presenter on Good Morning Britain, who happens to be part-Black. Beresford had taken issue on Twitter with Morgan’s relentless antipathy toward Markle before the interview was broadcast. Beresford and Morgan exchanged a few strong thoughts on the matter, with Beresford urging his then-colleague to divert his attention to Prince Andrew, the alleged pedophile at Buckingham Palace.

Beresford hit Morgan where it hurt when he was invited to talk about Markle, Morgan and racism. He brought up the time Markle refused to call Morgan back after the two went on a date in London a few years ago. This was not a revelation since Morgan himself has told the story over and over before. But Beresford implied that Morgan’s animosity stemmed from never getting called back by the woman who eventually married a prince. Morgan then walked off the set.

After describing Morgan’s conduct as “diabolical behavior”, Beresford also proceeded to touch on his own story about how he was asked “what shade of cocoa” his unborn son was going to be. The weatherman then brought up colorism in Britain and how white people feel more comfortable with mixed-race Brits than with thoroughly-Black Brits. You could tell the latter point had been his problem with Morgan all along – the idea that racism in Britain is not a far-fetched, unempirical notion. It is an everyday concept.

As someone who has also been asked what color his son was going to be, you can imagine what Beresford felt when Morgan rubbished the claim made by Markle. Beresford went on that set looking for blood and he found it.

We also learned yesterday from Ofcom, a British media regulator, that it had received more than 40,000 complaints about Morgan after Oprah’s interview. This was certainly no fault of the two Black people who confronted him. He brought this on himself.

To what extent were Mos-Shogbamimu and Beresford responsible for Morgan’s exit? We may never know but we can harness a good guess. Mos-Shogbamimu and Beresford said nothing different from what most Black people say when they have listened to Morgan open his mouth on anti-Black racism. But each of those two interlocutors also represents two separate constituencies: Mos-Shogbamimu, for anti-racism activists and Black people out there and Beresford, for what some ITV staff felt about Morgan’s opinions.

His defenders would say Morgan was a victim of Cancel Culture. That’s okay. But you would be sorry if you think that complaint was also not expressing worry about how much the fight against anti-Black racism is costing white Britain, white Europe and white America.

Why has PF asked provincial chairs to “step-aside”?

By Elias Munshya

The president of the Patriotic Front party has no authority under the Patriotic Front constitution or rules to do what he claims to have done in this circular. These provincial chairs were elected at the respective provincial party conventions, the president cannot unilaterally retire these chairmen. Under the Patrotic Front rules, the president cannot just decide to “step-aside”, to remove or retire a provincial chair. If the president decides to do so, they must state clear party reasons why they would be retiring provincial chairs. There is no rule, and certainly no central committee resolution to that effect.

Second, the time frame of the temporal (please read as temporary) does not make sense. The letter says these chairs are removed until August. Until after the elections. Again, we ask the question, under what rule has the PF president acted? How can they these senior party officials be removed until elections? If the intention was to level the playing field, why were they not “suspended” until say, the date of nominations? This is completely arbitrary and actually makes no sense at all.

Third, this letter appears to only suspend provincial chairs. And yet vice-chairs are equally culprits of the ambition to be MPs. So what has happened to Dr. Jonas Chanda the vice-chair of Copperbelt? Is he still in his position? What about Mr. Chitotela of Luapula? Is he in his position? How did the party president decide to remove chairs for wanting to be MPs and yet leave the vice-chairs intact?

Fourth, there is nothing wrong with party officials seeking to be elected. In fact, there is no advantage that party chairs will have over non-party chairs. The PF party president himself is running for the presidency of the republic and yet remains president of PF and is running to be PF president. If this is about levelling the playing field, why isn’t the party president suspended as well?

Fifth, it appears like the PF president likes to divide and rule. There is no rational reason for these latest manoeuvres. It will only lead to more infighting and division in a party that appears to be in need to project a united front. It is the house of cards at best.

Sixth, regarding the Copperbelt, it really is not looking nice. I pity these chairs because, without the position of provincial chair, he is much more vulnerable to dribbling. Others will fill the vacuum and by the time it is August, the dynamics will have changed a great deal.

Lastly, it appears like the letter is asking party officials interested in running to step-aside as well. This does not appear to be sincere. Why should they step-aside? These people are party officials, they are ministers, they are party functionaries. What has necessitated this directive?

Anyway, pano #pacipanda it is a house of cards. We are all wondering who is playing, and who is being played! 159814483_330040105157241_790693377459852906_o

Stop masquerading as NDC president, Atanga tells Kambwili

0

By Oliver Chisenga

NATIONAL Democratic Congress secretary General Bridget Atanga has demanded that Chishimba Kambwili stops “masquerading” as NDC president.

In her letter of demand written by Japhet Zulu Advocates, Atanga said Kambwili purported to have convened a symposium of non-office bearers of the party claiming that it was a central committee meeting of the NDC when in fact not and proceeded to meet in Luanshya on February 27.

She said the Luanshya meeting purported to be an NDC Central Committee meeting did not satisfy the constitution as it lacked the well outlined composition comprising the president, vice-president, national chairman, secretary general and deputy secretary general.

Atanga said the majority Luanshya-based cadres that attended the meeting could not be a substitute for the above.

“Kindly refer to the above captioned matter and note that we have been retained to act for Mrs Bridget K. Atanga (in her capacity as secretary general of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Political Party (herein after referred to as “NDC”).Our client apprises us that, upon registration of the NDC party, the Constitution that was initially registered required approval of Congress made up of 10,000 delegates in order to be operationalized. However, given the failure to hold a congress, the initial constitution was never operationalized. An attempt was later made to have a new constitution registered with the Registrar of Societies but to date, the said constitutional has not been registered,” read the letter.

Atanga further informed her lawyers that Kambwili held the position of interim president of the NDC pending registration of a new constitution

She said that in a meeting held on February 24, 2021, Kambwili informed her in the presence of the vice president and other senior members of the party that they should count him out of decision making processes of the party.

“Following your position, your temporary position of Interim President was no longer tenable and the party accepted your decision to cease to act as Interim President. However, we are further informed that despite having ceased to be Interim President of the NDC and despite there being no constitution for the NDC, you purported to have convened a symposium of non-office bearers of the party purporting that it was a Central Committee meeting of the NDC when in fact not and proceeded to meet in Luanshya on the 27th of February 2021.”

Atanga has instructed her lawyers to inform Kambwili that even assuming what he purported is the NDC constitution was in fact so, then his meeting in Luanshya on the afore mentioned date would still not satisfy the said constitution.

“We are also informed that following your gathering, you proceeded to hold a press briefing where you firstly pontificated that you had held your gathering in accordance with what you purported was the NDC constitution and secondly, you purported to have suspended the legitimate NDC officials despite lacking any mandate to do so,” she said.

Atanga has also instructed her lawyers to inform Kambwili that his Luanshya symposium on February 27 is null and void ab initio for a plethora of reasons including that there is currently no NDC constitution.

“As earlier stated, there is currently no NDC constitution and therefore no basis upon which the Luanshya meeting was held and it follows that the purported resolutions thereof have no effect. You are not a registered office bearer of the NDC. Following your ceasure to hold the office of Interim President of NDC, the only other legal basis upon which you could act in the name of the party is if you were among the list of office bearers lodged with the Registrar of Societies,” Atanga said.

She further informed Kambwili that he is not among and had never been among the registered office bearers and as such, he has no right to purport to act in the name of the party.

Atanga also said Kambwili is a convicted felon thus there is no longer any likelihood that he can be registered as an office bearer of the party.

“We are informed that generous attempts had previously been made by the office bearers to also register you as an office bearer but such attempts failed following your non clearance by Police on account of the numerous criminal charges that you were facing at the time and continue to face. We are also informed that now that you are a convicted felon, there is no longer any likelihood that you can be registered as an office bearer of the party,” she said.

“Given the foregoing, our further instructions are to demand as we now do: That since you ceased to be the Interim President of the NDC, you must immediately stop masquerading as such and stop purporting to make any decisions or pronouncements on behalf of the Party. That given the fact that your meeting of 27th February 2021 in Luanshya and its resolutions are null and void, you must immediately stop purporting to have suspended any member of the NDC.”

Atanga’s lawyers informed Kambwili that they expected to receive a written statement from him within 24 hours from receipt of their letter. “Acceding to our client’s demands and undertaking not to repeat your illegality, we have ready instructions to commence legal proceedings whose rigmaroles shall be to your greater detriment and cost,” the letter said.

2021 AS IN 1991! CONVERSATION WITH MYSELF

0

2021 AS IN 1991!
CONVERSATION WITH MYSELF:
By Bwanga Kaleele
Kasempa.

Exactly this time in 1991 as now, the cost of living had risen to unreachable levels and continuing to rise, and there was an outcry by Zambians against the UNIP Govt as there is an outcry against the PF govt.

By this time in 1991 as now, our country was owing lending institutions and cooperating partners a staggering external debt in billions of dollars.

By this time in 1991 as now, the UNIP Govt of Dr Kaunda was struggling to secure a loan from IMF to bail out our country’s economy which was on the rocks.

About this time in 1991 just like now, the IMF was reluctant to bail out our country’s economy and the talks dragged on to election day, about which Zambia became a hell of an economic place to be.

With our govt’s stubbornness which lending institutions have seen as a deliberate decision to default on payment of even just a USD 42 million interest on Eurobonds when our cadres could be seen splashing millions of Kwacha in the air like at a Nigerian Traditional Wedfding, its yet to be seen if the IMF will give us a round of talks. Most likely they will wait until after they see the outcome of the 12th August elections. Most obviously they are not prepared to deal with the same govt whose cadres are all over splashing millions of Kwacha while telling them ( IMF) that we need money to bail our economy out! They ( IMF) now believe granting a loan to Zambia in name of a bail out this time will mean funding the PF political campaigns. Its our own recklessness as PF govt that has boomeranged!

About this time as now in 1991, the UNIP leadership was bubbling with confidence about an electoral win; hallucinating about a UNIP victory, and even making plans to implement after elections.

About this time in 1991 as now, the UNIP govt was distributing mealie meal via coupons to appease Zambians, a fruitless effort that couldn’t help them win as they were buried in a 80% electoral landslide. It was like the end of Pharaoh and his mighty army in the Red Sea.

It was a black day for Dr Kaunda, UNIP and its leaders. But Zambia was born again! It was an end to a nightmarish long night. The Hour Had Come! Pain lingered but for the night but joy came in the morning, a morning of a new era. Like late. US President John F. Kennedy had intoned in his inaugural address on 20th January 1961: ” We stand today at the edge of the ‘New Frontier’; a New Frontier of unknown opportunities and perils.”
A NATION OF LAWS AND NOT OF MEN.

In 2015 Petersen produced his fourth album King Solomon and also features Afunika, Flexville Marley and Nameless from Kenya.

MUSIC AND SOCIETY

Mundia Mukubesa’s reaction to politicians was not entirely unexpected. Pressure also came from some church leaders that took great exception to Munyaule, a song that out-rightly euphemised sex like no other musician has ever done in Zambia. Petersen used the visibility Munyaule had brought him to highlight several injustices he saw in Zambian politics and the society it breeds.

Mundia Mukubesa has not spared the church in his social commentary where he released a song Amakwebo Mu Church, the travesty that seems to have engulfed the Zambian church. In this song , Mundia Mukubesa visits a church after a long time only to find that the church has now become a market place, selling everything from houses, to cars, and music albums. He then requests that God sends Jesus again to whip with the new Church that has been turned into a market place diverting from its spiritual purpose. The message in Amakwebo Mu Church is quite appropriate for the Zambian church, particularly the Pentecostal church that seems to be experiencing a serious identity crisis.

MUSIC AND POLITICS

Mundia Mukubesa’s prolific criticism of politicians saw the banning of his hit song Munyaule from playing on national radio, in 2005.

And in the Job 13:13 album, Mundia Mukubesa addressed parliamentarians castigating them to focus better things in parliament than debate his songs. He called Members of Parliament “Ba Mwankole” a local name for pied crows pointing out their hypocrisy of promising huge but later abandoning their people in Constituencies.

In 2013, he featured in PilAto’s single entitled BUFI, a highly politically charged song that labeled the late President Michael Sata a ‘Father of Lies’. The song got negative feedback from the supporters of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Since his emergency on the Zambian musical scene in mid 2000 Mukubesa Mundia aka Petersen Zagaze hasn’t been short of controversy with his songs, especially his political and social commentary ones, he has attacked the politician, the clergy and the sex worker. Most notable of the songs against the politician are Anyandule and Job 13:13, the clergyman can not forget his 2013 hit song Amakwebo and the latest one Maloza, the sex worker was also not spared in the 2010 hit entitled “Hule ni Hule.” In summary Mr Mundia is an accomplished and consistent musician who has used his music to speak against societal vices; corruption, thefts, segregation, political violence, prostitution, injustice and extortion something void of most musicians who focus on love messages, his music carries with it the real definition of what music should be – Inform, educate and entertain.

PETERSEN THE POLITICIAN

Following the demise of Patriotic Front Lusaka City Mayor Wilson Kalumba, Mundia Mukubesa was flaunted by a little-known People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) as a candidate for the Mayoral by-election.

The Patriotic Front’s Miles Sampa won after polling 81, 936 while his closests rival Kangwa Chileshe of the UPND got 36, 753 votes. Mundia Mukubesa came third with 7, 741 while Saboi Imboela of the NDC got 2, 645.

The political journey for Mundia Mukubesa had just begun. He silently left PAC and shifted his energies to Nalikwanda Constituency in Western Province, his home town.

He says “Nalikwanda Constituency is one of the biggest constituencies in Zambia, but is lacking a lot of developmental projects, national constitutional benefits and economic acquisitions seen and gained by other equally rural constituencies

The Zamunda palace in ‘Coming 2 America’ belongs to Rick Ross. Here’s how he is profiting from the $5.8m estate

Anyone who has watched the Hollywood movie ‘Coming 2 America’ may be quite familiar with the palace site of the fictional Kingdom of Zamunda. Apparently, that Zamundan royal palace belongs to record executive Rick Ross – his Atlanta, Georgia home.

The estate has 109 rooms, including 12 bedrooms, 21 bathrooms, and a dining room that could host 100 guests. Also, it includes a 135-seat theater, 350,000-gallon pool, bowling alley, and a boxing gym.

The 45,000 square-foot mansion was acquired by Ross for a discounted price of $5.8 million. The property, originally owned by boxer Evander Holyfield, was built in 1994. However, Holyfield lost the home after failing to pay a $14 million debt in 2012.

According to the Daily Mail, the heavyweight champion sold the property to JP Morgan Chase at a public auction as part of foreclosure for $7.5 million, and eventually, Ross bought it at $5.8 million.

As business-minded as Ross is, he has put the property to use in such a way that it is paying for itself. “What you see outside my door is a gathering of film producers and directors who possibly want to rent the estate for another film,” Rick Ross said in an Instagram Live video in January, according to a report. “As you all know, we have the ‘Coming To America 2’ that will be hitting the world in I believe March, which was filmed in this same estate.”

“It’s not free to come check out the estate. Twenty people are wanting to see it today, every day. What we do is charge people to come look at it, and there’s still 18 people that want to come a day. So, welcome to the promised land,” he added.

In an interview with “Undisputed” host Shannon Sharpe for Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, the rapper boasted of his negotiation skills that allow movie producers to shoot at his palace. He reveals having a movie producer pay $2.75 million to rent out his 109-room Atlanta mansion.

“A lot of times, I threw a number out there before, they moved a little slow and I went up on the number, and they met me there,” Ross disclosed.

According to Variety, much of ‘Coming 2 America’ production was recreated in Rick Ross’ mansion. Production designer Jefferson Sage said his team scouted a number of locations before settling on Ross estate.

He said: “Our big problem was, where do we find a house that had the scale of the possibilities for a very lavish palace?”

“That entrance foyer with the big two-story interior and double-winding staircase was perfect,” said Sage. “Off of that, there were two beautiful big rooms with giant windows and 18-foot ceilings. We used five key spaces that we turned into Zamunda.”

Sage said he and his team converted those key spaces for the film’s primary sets, including the king’s bedroom and the dining room.

SIKAILE SIKAILE WRITES

THE REWARDING SILENCE AFTER THIEVES,CRIMINALS AND OPPRESSORS UNDRESS YOUR WIFE IN PUBLIC

Circumstantial evidence, this the evidence that on its own cannot warrant a conviction. But, piecing it together with other pieces of evidence becomes real evidence and can help in the successful prosecution of a case.
A political Giant goes mute, with the silence he launches a breweries and on top of it his trucks are cleared to transport Mukula. One of the vehicle he owns is involved in an accident at Kasensele Gold mine.

You know what country men and women, this is what has killed our beautiful Zambia. We have freedom fighter claimants who in the day are holy men, and later on in the night they sit and eat with the devil and demons oppressing you. No matter what happens some of us we would rather choose to be killed by oppressors as they have attempted to do so on several occasions for speaking on your behalf than betraying the nation with blood moneys.

To you all opposition political leaders who does double standards! I’m watching very attentively and soon Zambians will know you. Mukula saga has deprived our poor citizens in the area where it was indigenously found an opportunity to come out of the poverty dungeon and how come a so called opposition(s), figures are beneficiaries including in the gold mine thievery. Opposition MPs who are benefiting in dark dungeon of plunderers, murderers and thieves you are as guilty as hell. Feel free to join thieves, murderers and plunderers than doing double standards.

Then circumstantially, you know someone is getting rewards for the silence. It may be nothing but, Mukula licence cannot be given to an opposition member for nothing, unless….. Mukula is a tree for a privileged few. Tell me you Zambians how can you feel if you were to that I Sikaile Sikaile has been given the contract to procure guns for the country from sudan? If this happens just know that I’m a new thief, murderer, criminal and demon of oppression in the nation. Darkness and light cannot be together.

I personally cannot receive money from a group that stripped my wife or girlfriend naked in public. I would rather reconcile with a man who commits adultery with my wife. At least I would say, she was willing. But, to undress her in public and I start receiving money from such a group, Where is the honour for a head of the House?

Like a story of a man who was given a million dollars for a rich man to sleep with his wife. It is all vanity.Zambia my beautiful country, let your people have foresight.

JUDGE NGOMA BEMOANS PARTIAL APPLICATION OF THE LAW BY MAGISTRATE SIMUSAMBA

0

Lusaka – 10.03.21
JUDGE NGOMA BEMOANS PARTIAL APPLICATION OF THE LAW BY MAGISTRATE SIMUSAMBA
Following recent norm by the PF government to break the law Scot free, Judge Ngoma has thanked Magistrate Simusamba for pronouncing him a prisoner and sending him to jail in the name of breaking the law which PF officials and cadres are breaking day and night, yet the same law has failed to visit them.

Speaking during a casual meeting with UPND NMC member Trevor Mwiinde today, Judge Ngoma bemoaned the blind eye and deaf ear that the law enforcement institutions are turning on PF law breakers while unjustly prosecuting innocent citizen.

He since has charged that such acts purely shows enslavement coupled with lack of love and respect for the people of the land. This is exactly what made him depart and denounce his membership from PF among other reasons to make an alliance with the suffering majority Zambians.

Judge Ngoma has therefore called on all well meaning Zambians to join hands with the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema with unity of purpose to form a government that comprise of pro poor policies and inclusive development which will benefit everyone, unlike the case with PF government where development is defined by discrimination.

Evident are road infrastructural development which are concentrated in certain areas, while leaving some major roads where productivity occurs.

Major among many such roads are Petauke Sandwe road, Waza Weka Chikalaba, Mwanjabantu roads, upto Mumbi through Mutumbata. In central province Kabwe old Mkushi road, Landless corner to Mumbwa and Mwachisompola to Situmbeko road which PF has decided to intentionally ignore.
Also speaking during the same meeting was Mwiinde who strongly charged that he had forgiven all the people who witnessed and testified against him unjustly, leading his foot prints to go to Chimbokaila, even though the wounds can not be healed especially to their children who will remain behind at some point. However, he further said that they can not live with hatred forever because they have only one Zambia to live for despite different places of birth and current societal status.

Critical among others, Judge Ngoma and Mwiinde discussed various issues among which their unfair incarceration believing that they have more in common owing to the fact that their destines are rooted way before as they seem to take a similar path though one
seems to be experienced than the other due to the fact that he served the former late President – Michael Chilufya Sata.

Petersen to challenge Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa for Nalikwanda seat

0

AS THE run-up to the 12 August 2021 elections continues, Nalikwanda member of parliament Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa will surely face a formidable challenge from singer Petersen Zagaze.

Petersen, real name Mundia Mukubesa, has successfully made the transition from the music scene to being a serious political contender.

When he contested the Lusaka mayoral by-election, he beat the likes of National Democratic Congress candidate Saboi Imboela by over 5,000 votes.

This time around however, Mukubesa has opted to repay Nalikwanda with his intellect and duty to drive the developmental agenda of his native rural constituency.

Born in 1982, Mukubesa holds a degree in Business Administration from LIUTEBM University

Through social advocacy and indeed music, Mukubesa has contributed to the call for good governance, public accountability and ending poverty among the citizens of Zambia and now wants to harness that energy towards the development of Nalikwanda which is an eyesore in terms of dilapidated public infrastructure and poverty.

Since his emergence on the Zambian music scene in the year 2000, Petersen has courted controversy through his songs.

But even early in his music career, it was apparent that Mukubesa would one day transition from the stage to the political podium as evidenced by his lyrics and subject matter.

His song ‘Anyandule’, which condemned thieving politicians, was banned from public media.

Also unforgettable was ‘Amakwebo mu Church’, a scathing attack on bogus pastors fleecing their vulnerable and suffering flocks.

Petersen’s reaction to politicians was not entirely unexpected.

Pressure also came from some church leaders that took great exception to ‘Munyaule’, a song that out-rightly euphemised sex like no other musician had ever done in Zambia.

He used the visibility the song had brought him to highlight several injustices he saw in Zambian politics and society.

And in the ‘Job 13:13’ album, Mukubesa castigated lawmakers, calling on them to focus on more important things in parliament than debate his songs.

He called Members of Parliament “Ba Mwankole” a local name for crows, pointing out their hypocrisy of making big promises but later abandoning their constituents after elections.

In 2013, he featured in PilAto’s single ‘Bufi’, a highly politically charged song that labelled Michael Sata a ‘father of lies’ and drew negative feedback from supporters of the late president and the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Regarding his political ambitions, Mukubesa promises to pursue a developmental agenda to channel a fair share of the national cake to Nalikwanda. He also aims to contribute to the greater agenda of Zambian democracy by being a critical independent voice that will bring the Central government to accountability on the use of public resources and general governance.
