We are tired of tribal talk, UCZ Bishop tells Lungu

A senior clergyman from the United Church of Zambia has advised former President Edgar Lungu and his associates to refrain from engaging in tribal rhetoric as they strive for a political return to power.

Bishop Lordwell Siame’s caution comes in the wake of a growing trend by Lungu and those associated with him to use tribal talk as a campaign strategy against their opponents.

After noticing that Lungu, Raphael Nakachinda and Given Lubinda were part of the congregation that attended the commissioning reception service of Deaconess Phaides Mukasa at the UCZ Lusaka Presbytery, Kafue Consistory, Bishop Siame decided to dish out some political advice.

The Bishop’s message attracted cheers and claps from the congregation as Lungu and group also clapped reluctantly.

The clergyman pointed out that a true leader must have a heart for all Zambians and the goal must always be transformational.

“To you who have come as politicians and Christians. The message that I will tell you as your bishop also is that when you go out there know that what you are doing is for God. So wherever you are, never look at your differences look at what is bringing you together. And above all have a heart for Zambians, have a heart for the people.”

“Make sure that your goal should be transformational and your goal should not be any other thing, I pray that the Lord may go with you and may his light shine upon you. Preach peace, preach love,” preached Bishop Siame.

The Bishop further warned that should the former President find a UCZ member engaging in tribal talk, the member should undergo disciplinary action.

“Please avoid tribal talk, we are tired, avoid tribal talk, we are all one in Christ here in the UCZ. The lesson that we have taught you as you are going is that, one in Christ.”

“Ba President if you find a UCZ tribalist, bring him, we have our own systems, we know what to do here with people who promote such in our catechism, we promote unity, we promote love, co-existence and we preach things that bring people together,” he said.

THE WIND OF CHANGE IS HERE AND WE MUST EMBRACE IT- Chanoda Ngwira

THE WIND OF CHANGE IS HERE AND WE MUST EMBRACE IT

By Chanoda Ngwira F

Time come when the obvious is definitely obvious. And under normal circumstances, those who have been faced with such times must be ready to accept it because that is the will of the people.

This wind of change blowing beyond the SADC is something big to learn from, lessons drown from such get straight to the faces of those who think political power is permanent. Power blinds and we usually tend to ignore the voices from the least voter in Bweengwa or Chasefu for the sole reason of thinking we can do the undoable just to keep that power.

A good example started from South Africa, much as the ANC managed to slightly win the opposition in that country, they didn’t convincingly win as they needed numbers from other parties to cement their stay. In short, President Ramaphosa definitely lost that election if their constitution was like that of Zambia where 50+1 threshold is a determinant absolutely.

Mozambique in my opinion followed where citizens are up in arms demanding for their President who they feel was the winner. They are protesting on a daily basis despite the ruling party claiming that they won. This too should be a basis of those planning to hold on to power at all costs without the regard of the biggest Constituency which is the people.  Do we need as a country to have such in 2026? The answer is a definite no, what then must happen? Accept defeat when it has come.

As though South Africa and Mozambique are enough examples, Bostwana followed where the people of Bostwana loudly kicked out the ruling party. The ruling party conceded defeat, the rest is history. Again we learn serious lessons there from President Masisi who graciously respected the wishes of the people by accepting their desire. I hope when this happens in our case come 2026, Mr Hakainde Hichilema will humbly respect the wish of the people.

Mauritius followed where a former Prime Minister bounced back to office, we also have USA where the same happened. Namibia and Ghana are waiting.

Truth is, the wind of change is blowing heavily and it will not spare Zambia.

TASILA AND ESTHER LUNGU’S  APPLICATION TO APPEAL AGAINST GRABBING OF THEIR PROPERTIES  DISMISSED  BY THE COURTS OF LAW IN LUSAKA

TASILA AND ESTHER LUNGU’S  APPLICATION TO APPEAL AGAINST GRABBING OF THEIR PROPERTIES  DISMISSED  BY THE COURTS OF LAW IN LUSAKA
——————————-

ECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC) has dismissed Tasila and Esther Lungu’s applications for permission to appeal against the court’s recent judgement ordering forfeiture of their properties.

Tasilu Lungu asked for leave to appeal against EFCC’s decision to order forfeiture to the State of her Sinda farm worth K8.8million.

On the other hand, former First Lady Esther Lungu wanted permission to appeal against the courts decision to order forfeiture of her flats valued at K66million to the State.

In both cases, EFCC has refused to allow Tasila and her mother to appeal against the courts decision to order forfeiture of their asseets.

In the case of Tasila, who is currently abroad on maternity leave, there judges refused to allow her to appeal because her application because it lacks merit as she had failed to advance persuasive grounds to justify allowing her permission to appeal against the court’s judgement.

“We find that the interested party [Ms Lungu] has not advanced compelling grounds or special circumstances to warrant this court to exercise its discretion to grant leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal.

“Leave to appeal is therefore denied,” the ruling rendered on Friday reads.

In a September 17, 2024 judgement, EFCC allowed the forfeiture of Ms Lungu’s farm F/2278 in Sinda, Eastern Province, to the State because it was tainted.

The court ruled that Director of Public Prosecutions had established, on a balance of probabilities, that the property was acquired through illicit means.

Ms Lungu, who is former President Edgar Lungu’s daughter, was also condemned to pay costs.

Dissatisfied with the judgement, Ms Lungu filed an application for leave (permission) to appeal against the verdict before the Court of Appeal.

Through her lawyers, Ms Lungu, who has been out of the country of on maternity leave, urged the court to grant her leave to appeal because her grounds of appeal have serious likelihood of success.

However, Judge Susan Wanjelani, on behalf of other judges, ruled that perusal of Ms Lungu’s intended grounds of appeal reveals that the appeal has no prospects of success.

“Aside from the above, we are also aware that counsel for the interested party urged us to allow the application for leave to appeal because the appeal raises a point of law of public importance.

“…for a point of law to be of public importance, it must have a public or general character rather than one that merely affects the private rights or interest of the parties to a particular dispute,” Judge Susan Wanjela said.

“It is our considered view that though matters to do with non-conviction forfeiture are novel, the said matters do not fall in the realm of public importance because they merely affect private rights”.

On the part of the former first lady, another panel of judges ruled that Mrs Lungu failed to advance any compelling reasons to warrant granting her leave to appeal against the judgement.

Judge Pixie Yangailo said that Mrs Lungu’s grounds of appeal also does not have any prospects of succeeding.

Mrs Lungu lawyers plan to appeal against the refusal to allow them to appeal.

Man refuses to penetrate wife’s goal post for 7 years citing hygiene

WHILE many men work hard to woo and dribble their way to the heart of their wives with romance so that they could render them defenseless and score in the open goal posts, a man in Lusaka was intentionally failing to score due to a dirt playing field.

59 year-old man of Lusaka’s Garden compound narrated to the Matero Local court how he has not been able to touch his wife for seven years because stating her low levels of hygiene had drained his sexual appetite for her.

Patrick Kansunwa, a driver, decided to finally end his marriage of 13 years with Loveness Kakapizye aged 49 due to the fact that she has a bad relationship with water and avoids bathing at any cost.

Kansunwa said his wife’s lack of hygiene  started two years into their marriage, when he started receiving calls from people that Kakapizye had been drinking alcohol while he was away for work as a driver.

He shared that the wife’s drinking habits started worsening as she could even release a number 2 in her own clothes once she was drunk.

Kansunwa said not even the Equatorial Guinea videos would make him feel enticed enough to touch her.

“She is very dirty, so I started losing interest in her. My body could not be moved even if I saw her naked after a long time because I would always find her smelling bad. She even reached the extent of releasing stool in her own clothes” complained to the defendant who sued for divorce.

But his wife begged to differ, revealing that Kansunwa was also a beer bender who also left fecal matter in his trousers once intoxicated.

Kakapizye complained about the husband’s abusive nature and seven years drought of how her husband was failing to touch her since 2017

“When we got married, he beat me three days after our kitchen party for buying three new pants. He is too jealous over me. He went on and impregnated another woman when I am his fourth wife already. He even squandered his NAPSA partial withdrawal alone.”

“And each time I’m washing, I find fecal matters in his boxers and his defense is always that it is because he used tissue and not water to clean himself,” said Kakapizye.

In passing judgment, Magistrate Harriet Mulenga granted the couple divorce, citing Gender based Violence and lack of conjugal rights as some of the main cause of the divorce.

“This marriage was competing in drinking alcohol. If the other one poops on her self, the other one would attempt to stab the partner and you were endangering your lives without considering your children. The court will however divorce you and order that plaintiff compensate the defendant with K15,000,” said Magistrate Mulenga…https://kalemba.news/local/2024/11/13/man-refuses-to-penetrate-wifes-goal-post-for-7-years-citing-hygiene/

UGANDAN TIKTOKERS HELD FOR INSULTING FIRST FAMILY

UGANDAN TIKTOKERS HELD FOR INSULTING FIRST FAMILY

Two Ugandans have been detained for allegedly insulting President Yoweri Museveni, the first lady Janet Museveni and the president’s son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba on the video-sharing platform, TikTok.

Magistrate Stella Maris Amabilis remanded 21-year-old David Ssengozi, alias Lucky Choice, and Isaiah Ssekagiri , 28, to Kigo prison until Wednesday when they will make an initial court appearance.

They are accused of hate speech and spreading malicious information against the first family and musicians linked to the governing National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Appearing in court on Monday, the two denied the charges.

They are jointly charged with Julius Tayebwa, 19, who had already been brought before court and remanded in prison for the same offences.

Prosecutors allege that they posted information on TikTok meant to “ridicule degrade, demean, and promote hostility” against the first family and others

The magistrate allowed their detention after police said they were still making inquiries on the matter.

“You will come back on the 13 November, when the case will come up for mention. You are remanded at Kigo prison till then,” the magistrate ordered.

In September, police spokesman Rusoke Kituuma warned that abusing the president, who he termed the “fountain of honour”, was an offence. He mentioned a TikToker with the name Lucky Choice who he said they were investigating. He was later arrested.

It is not clear which post led to the arrest, but a video released in April on TikTok on the page LuckyChoice70, with the title My First Enemies, criticised the first family using sexually explicit terms.

In July, a 24-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison for insulting the president and the first family on a TikTok video. He had pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness.

It comes as the government has been criticised for restricting people’s ability to criticise actions by the state or its officials.

The US government in a report last year accused Uganda of restricting internet freedom through the use of criminal punishments.

Rights groups also regularly denounce the Ugandan authorities over violations of human rights and the freedom of expression.

In 2022, award-winning Ugandan author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija was charged with two counts of “offensive communication” after making unflattering remarks about the president and his son on Twitter.

He fled the country to Germany after spending a month in jail, where he said he had been tortured. (BBC News)

CYBER SECURITY AUTHORITIES NAB WHATSAPP HIJACKER

Law enforcement officials in Lusaka have apprehended a 22-year-old crook of Kabanana Compound who has been collaborating with international cybercriminals in hijacking WhatsApp accounts.

Ernest Zibonile, a Gen Z delinquent was fished out by the Cybersecurity Task Force and ZICTA.

After illegally taking over WhatsApp accounts, the criminals would extort money from the contacts.

Upon arrest, Zibonile confessed to his involvement in the hacking scheme.

He revealed that he was recruited by a network of 10 Nigerian and 20 Kenyan hackers to facilitate the withdrawal of stolen funds using Zambian mobile numbers.

Zibonile would later on receive a 15 percent commission for each successful transaction under the instruction of withdrawing the loot from pre registered sim card for anonymity and immediate fund transfers to avoid detection and reversal.

According to police sources the suspect was extracted from his criminal hub following escalating complaints of cyber crimes leading to him.

Many would attest that they have once  received a phone call from a person with a West African or East African accent claiming to have a local name and extending an invitation to an online meeting.

But this usually ends with one’s personal social media account being hacked and used to solicit money from people close to the victims.

This was th case of 19 year old Joyce Mwanza, a resident of Lusaka, whose  WhatsApp account was hacked while criminals gained unauthorised access to her account and used it to solicit money from her friends and family members.

The criminals obtained loans from her contacts totaling approximately K22,000.

Mwanza reported to authorities in October that in same month on the 27, she received a WhatsApp call from a man with an East African accent who invited her to join a Zoom meeting through one of her WhatsApp groups.

During the call, the individual sent her a four-digit code and instructed her to repeat it back. Upon doing so, she was immediately logged out of her WhatsApp account.

A few hours later, Joyce began receiving direct phone calls from her contacts, informing her that her WhatsApp number was soliciting money from them.

The contacts shared several phone numbers provided by the scammers as the intended recipients for the funds.

Following the Mwanza’s report, luck for the scammers started hanging on a thin thread as collaborative effort by the Cybersecurity Task Force and ZICTA led to the arrest of Zibonile who acted like an agent for the scheme.

According to authorities, the hackers’ method of operation involved the use of social engineering tactics to gain access to victims’ accounts and used multiple mobile numbers to imitate legitimate activity.

The Task Force tracked the suspects’ live location, pinpointing their activity to the Kanbana area of Lusaka, where they apprehended the 22-year-old.

Authorities have cautioned the public to verify before sending money and be alert of scamming techniques to avoid being preyed on.

In addition, Mr. Wiliki Dube and Mr. Lloyd Phiri have been jointly charged with Giving False Information to a Public Officer: Mr. Lloyd Phiri for signing an affidavit falsely indicating that he is the father of Wiliki Dube while Mr. Wiliki Dube provided false information to a public officer, claiming his name is Geoffrey Chongo Zyeele.

Using this fraudulent identity, he proceeded to open an Airtel Money account under the same name with the intent to deceive.

Mr. Lloyd Phiri, aged 27, a former civilian employee of the Zambia Army, is accused of facilitating the acquisition of the fraudulent NRC for Mr. Dube, assisting in the scheme that led to significant public deception.

Both suspects are accused of using this fraudulent identity to solicit money from members of the public under the pretense of aiding recruitment into the Zambia Army. We would like to reiterate that the Zambia Army does not demand payments from prospective recruits and is not currently conducting any recruitment exercise.

The Zambia Police Service remains committed to safeguarding the public from fraudulent activities and ensuring that individuals who attempt to defraud the citizenry are held accountable. We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the Police.

UKA HAS NOT ENDORSED or PICKED A 2026 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, SAYS SIKOTA

Ndola-Tuesday, November 12, 2024

1. We would like to clarify to the general public, our members, and those who still have hope for Zambia and continue to cheer us on, that the United Kwacha Alliance has NOT changed its name and neither does it have any intentions of doing so.

2. We believe UKA is not just aspirational but represents the values of unity, peace and above all the yearning for the people of Zambia to arise and redeem themselves from any form of subjugation.

3. While UKA continues to work with faith-based, religious, civil society (CSO’s), youth, women, disability rights organizations and many other special interest groups, we remain consistent with our principles and values of promoting order, discipline and unity of purpose in our quest to liberate the citizens of Zambia from a repressive, inept and corrupt UPND government.

“In this quest we MUST state for the record that we do not support duality of alliances as that goes against the spirit of uniting the opposition.”

4. To this effect, therefore and in upholding order and unity of purpose, those who seek to belong to a multiplicity of alliance groups are encouraged to disengage from UKA and join any alliance of their choice and that will allow members to belong to a multitude of alliances. Members of UKA are reminded of Matthew 11 :25 – “a house divided against itself can not stand”.

5. We would like to stress that as UKA we remain committed to our core mission, whose primary focus is finding solutions for the hardships the citizens are currently facing and we therefore call upon like-minded Zambians that believe as we do, that it is possible to emancipate Zambia and develop into a better country, to join us as we embark on this journey.

6. UKA is alive to the calls that have been made for a flag bearer to be announced to the nation. We would like to assure the nation that the process of identifying a flag bearer is a key task that can not be done without thorough consultation, candidate profiling and a suitability assessment.

7. In this regard, we are happy to advise that we have reached an advanced stage in the process and upon completion of the process UKA will be able to announce to the nation not just the flag bearer but the next President of the Republic of Zambia after the 2026 elections as we shall announce a team that will deliver victory with the support of the Zambian people.

8. UKA will, however, focus on identifying policies and solutions that will deliver Zambia into a better economic, social and political space by building a visibly credible team while continuing on the path of identifying a flag bearer and presidential candidate, with the running mate, for the 2026 elections based on our set benchmarks.

Some of these benchmarks include but are not limited to:

i. Honesty
ii. Intregrity
iii. Consistency
iv. Right motive for offering their candidature to the country
v. Willingness to put country above self
vi. Plans for bettering the lives of Zambians
vii. Singular focus to provide a new and improved team that will not repeat the excesses of the past
viii. No ulterior motives for seeking office
ix. Acceptability across all sections of the country.

9. Finally, we would like to encourage all UKA members, partners, sympathizers and followers to make themselves available to volunteer in different areas as we start the process of mobilizing ourselves and to get us to a point of readiness ahead of the 2026 elections.

10. We thank you and trust that we will work together and rid this nation of this inept and repressive government.

Hakainde Hichilema’s PR in Comatose -Laura Miti, My Response

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

Civil Society leader and President Hakainde Hichilema’s apologist, Laura Miti says the whole government media machinery is in a a deep coma and is constantly defeated by Emmanuel Mwamba’s “lies and spin.”

Her view is right but both her diagnosis and prognosis are equally flawed.

Now, here is why Hichilema’s public image remains in tatters to the extent that if Zambia held a general election today, he and most of his MPs will likely lose to any candidate the Opposition will front.

Hichilema’s own lies and broken promises that are easy to show, forms part of his biggest image crisis.

We say: “social-media does NOT forget.”

So it’s easy to replay Hichilema’s own past videos, tweets and Facebook postings to show that he has lied or continues to break his own campaign promises.

Hichilema found an economy struggling, a high cost of living, foreign debt burden issues that were sitting on a bed of legacy issues such as unemployment, lack of economic opportunities, disease burden, a volatile exchange rate, corruption, abuse of the law and human rights abuses.

Unfortunately, Hichilema has driven all these indices to a worse level than we have ever witnessed in the last 60 years.

This crisis is HH’s own making. He won’t even consider an apology against his own lies and sadly won’t accept that things are worse. Like Laura, he thinks its a mere image or PR crisis.

O er three years in office now, he has encouraged his officials and praise singers to sing that it’s the Patriotic Front that is to blame for the current crises, even when these assertions are mostly false and  just annoy citizens further!

Let’s look at President Hakainde Hichilema’s various media teams.

He has Clayson Hamasaka, Frederick Misebezi and Brian Mwiinga at State House.

He recently recruited veteran journalist and lawyer, Whitney Mulobela to help with media strategy.

He has Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa and his wayward, zealous and toxic Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana.

He has those manning his foreign media buy and apearances such as Brenthurst Foundation.

He has Mark Simuuwe speaking and totles himself as a ” UPND consultant”! Which consultant speaks for an organisation he has been hired to? Does Simuuwe know what the word “Consultant” mean?

He has Jaquiline Chishimba who does government and agency related PR at a commercial fee.

He has assembled radio callers, social-media bloggers and the UPND is currently hosting various party media centres.

He has Frank Bwalya, Cosmas Chileshe and Patrick Samwimbila he recently poached from the Patriotic Front.

He has State House Special Assistant for Investments, Jito Kayumba, who promotes quality videos and drone shots like that of weddings, over emphasis on credible or persuasive content.

He had Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily Mail, ZANIS and ZNBC that urgently need a reboot to move away from their archaic methods and legacy tendencies.

He has various Ministries, Departments and Agencies that have their own  fully fledged PR units.

Hichilema also has a media friendly private media, some bought, some invested-in, some loyal, and others intimidated.

So despite his wide media infrastructure , why is Hichilema’s media in comatose? that “it’s being defeated by Emmanuel Mwamba” according to Laura Miti?

First of all his team of advisors believe in a hard and brutal approach, a mistaken belief that this will bring to order erring Opposition, vocal critics or a wayward social-media platform.

Instead of applying media skills to every contentious issue and concentrating on setting the agenda or merely doing their job, his media teams believe in using the Police, issues unwarranted threatens, beat, detain and arrested us.

Everyone throws their weight against us from ZANIS reporter Kalani Muchima who constantly calls for our arrest to UPND media page owners such as my young brother Roy Makayi demanding an equal platform debate.

Sadly Hichilema, verily, believes in Koswe and affiliated rogue media outlets, a type of media that churns out defamatory and annoying insults against his perceived political opponents, probably guerilla journalism that could served and saved him better in Opposition but totally irrelevant and a PR nightmare for a ruling Party determined to win hearts and minds of stakeholders and the people.

His Permanent Secretary of Information and Media, Thabo Kawana falsely postures himself as Chief Government Spokesperson thereby constantly undermining the role of his Minister.
Because he lacks the authority, Kawana creates a nagging perception, especially, on hot or sensitive matters, that his statements may be overruled by the Minister.

He creates an unmistakable impression of unbriddled and naked ambitions, that he must be appointed as Minister and Chief Government Spokesperson.

It is worse at State House, the seat of all power. State House has no voice or face of Spokesperson.

Clayson Hamasaka is expected to play this role “alilubila mubowa”! However we only see Hamasaka at work through dry statements, usually poorly written, we see more of his cattle and his fish projects than we see him perform his role as State House Spokesperson.

Because of thsi vacuum at State House and Ministry of Information, others have tried to step up to fill the vacuum such as Thabo Kawana and Mark Simuuwe.

But from their work, its easy to note that both have no media training, cannot set the national agenda and are constantly reactive.

There is a clear disconnect in communication of government policies and programs. Its the case of the left hand NOT knowing what the right hand is doing.

They think by arresting us, scandalising us or destroying us, or labeling us propagandist, that it will take away the failed project that President Hakainde Hichilema is quickly panning out to be.

You cannot spin against hunger.

You cannot spin yourself out of a volatile exchange rate market.

You cannot hide corruption.

You cannot hide scandals.

You cannot hide unemployment, cost of living crisis and disease outbreaks!

You cannot spin yourself out of of an economic crisis.

My simple advice to President Hichilema is that before he considers putting up a new media team, he should work and deliver!Chapwa!

Working hard without any meaningful results requires an introspection.

There is no better story, no better PR than the story of success and results..failure attracts blame games while success attracts results and many fathers.

LAURA MITI WROTE:

If the President resolutely refuses to put together a PR team, that can easily show the stories that Emmanuel Mwamba expertly (grant that to him) puts together, to be mostly lies or spin, then he cannot be excused for unpresidentially doing what should be left to his communication team.

The whole government being defeated in the PR game because the Kateks refuses to do the right, if difficult, thing. Refuses to reassign, not even fire, those who have failed in a fundamental task.

The problem is not social media, Sir! It’s your comatose communication function.

Laura Miti Must understand that PR Can’t Fix Everything: The Government Must Focus on Real Solutions

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

In her recent Facebook post, Laura Miti raised concerns about the UPND government’s public relations (PR) efforts, accusing them of failing to effectively counter the “misinformation” being spread by Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba, the PF Publicity and Information Secretary. She further suggests that the government is losing the PR battle due to the unwillingness of the “Kateks”—a term presumably referring to the president—to take decisive action, such as reassigning or even dismissing those responsible for what she perceives as a communication failure.

While it’s true that a well-organized PR team is essential for shaping public perception and managing misinformation, there are clear limitations to what PR alone can accomplish when the facts are undeniable and right in front of the public. Ambassador Mwamba may be adept at crafting narratives, but it is critical to acknowledge that these narratives are not lies. Instead, they reflect the very real issues and challenges facing the government. The issues highlighted by Ambassador Mwamba are not hypothetical or invented; they are grounded in the lived experiences of citizens and the ongoing policies of the government. These are matters of public record, visible to anyone paying attention, and the transparency of these issues makes it almost impossible to dispute the accuracy of the claims.

In this context, the role of PR becomes constrained. While public relations efforts are designed to correct misconceptions, promote achievements, and shape public understanding, they cannot mask the more significant and systemic challenges that people face. No amount of slick media messaging can change the fact that citizens are dealing with economic hardship, inadequate public services, and governance failures on a daily basis. The government’s communications team can attempt to counteract these narratives, but they cannot rewrite the reality of people’s lives.

Focusing only on managing the narrative without addressing the core issues will only deepen public skepticism and further erode trust in the government’s ability to lead. The public is no longer looking for well-crafted speeches or carefully controlled media appearances; they are looking for real, substantive change. They want improvements in the economy, better public services, and a government that can demonstrate accountability. The real measure of effective governance is not found in polished press releases or talking points but in tangible actions that directly improve people’s lives.

Therefore, rather than investing significant resources in fighting narratives, the government must prioritize delivering real, measurable improvements. Whether in the economy, healthcare, education, or infrastructure, progress is the most powerful PR. When the government addresses the pressing needs of the population and achieves meaningful results, these will naturally speak louder than any message crafted by a communications team. The true strength of a government’s public relations lies not in its spin, but in its ability to create visible, positive change.

It is undeniable that a strong communications team can amplify a government’s successes, but the actions themselves—tangible, impactful changes—are what will ultimately define public perception. PR is a tool, not a substitute for leadership. The government can no longer afford to spend its energy on damage control or media spin. To restore public trust, it must focus on delivering solutions, not just talking about them. Only then will the PR challenges fade, as the people will have real results to validate the government’s narrative.

In the final analysis, the true measure of a government’s success will not be found in its ability to manage media narratives but in its ability to confront and solve the real challenges facing its citizens. For a government serious about restoring confidence in its leadership, the priority must be action over words, substance over spin. Achieving tangible, meaningful progress will not only address the concerns of the public, but it will also render PR countermeasures unnecessary. Actions speak louder than words, and no amount of PR can compensate for a lack of real, effective governance. The time for spin is over; now is the time for action.

MINING GIANT ANGLO BACK TO ZAMBIA, MEET HICHILEMA

…They Left In 2001 After MMD Stole Mazoka’s Election

Africa’s mining giant Anglo American Corporation is back to Zambia after having left the country in 2001.

The mine giant withdrew from Zambia after UPND president Anderson Mazoka a former Anglo CEO was robbed of his victory in 2001 by Frederick Chiluba and MMD.

Following the winning of the UPND in 2021 under another business friendly leader Hakainde Hichilema Anglo American Corporation has announced it’s return to the number two copper producing country.

They have since held a meeting with President Hakainde Hichilema. The meeting was held on Monday this week, 11th November 2024 at State House.

The Zambian President who campaigned on bringing in more foreign investments in order to create jobs targets 3 million tonnes of copper production.

This is what President Hichilema wrote after this milestone engagement with the Ango delegation led by its CEO:

HE MET ANGLO-AMERICA!

This afternoon, we hosted a delegation from Anglo American Corporation, led by the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Duncan Wanblad, who are in the country.

We are glad to note the renewed interest by Anglo American Corporation, to invest in our mining sector, after close of 20 years of their exit. The 3 million tons annual copper production target we have set for ourselves will require partnerships with reputable mining companies like Anglo American corporation.

Our government remains committed to facilitate an investment environment in the mining sector that will benefit our people and help to grow the economy. To achieve the kind of win – win investment environment, continuous dialogue on the policy and legal frameworks for the sector, remains key.

Key changes following the integration include a change in branch name for those in proximity, and an update to former Atlas Mara sort codes and SWIFT Code effective 18th November 2024.

Access Bank Zambia’s SWIFT Code (AZAMZMLU) will replace the former Atlas Mara Swift Code. Customers are encouraged to update their records to prevent any delays in international transactions.

The bank will continue to process incoming and outgoing transfers received with previous details until a cut-off date to be communicated.”

ZAMBIA, KENYA TO HOST THE FIRST -EVER PRAYER AND FASTING CONFERENCE

More than 100 intercessors will attend the conference, which started yesterday, November 11 and will end on November 17 at the Show Grounds in Lusaka.

It will mainly focus on praying for God’s guidance and intervention for Zambia’s political, economic, and social well-being and to strengthen every believer’s faith at large.

‘Zanu-PF, Mnangagwa interfered in Mozambique’s elections’

0

The High Commissioner of the Southern Africa Human Rights Lawyers, Talent Rusere, has accused Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of interfering in Mozambique’s recent elections, which have sparked political unrest and allegations of electoral fraud.

In an interview with South African State broadcaster, Rusere revealed that his organization has launched an investigation into the role Zimbabwe played in the Mozambican electoral process. The allegations stem from claims that Zimbabwean nationals were involved in voting in Mozambique’s election, potentially swaying the outcome in favor of the ruling party, Frelimo. The National Electoral Commission of Mozambique declared Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo as the winner, but opposition party PODEMOS, led by Venacio Mondlane, has strongly disputed the results, accusing Frelimo of electoral fraud.

“We have launched an investigation to find out what exactly transpired in Mozambique, which led us to understand that there has been interference by the Zimbabwean President and the ruling party,” Rusere said. “We believe there are credible reports that Zimbabweans were being sent across the border to vote during the Mozambican elections, which could have influenced the election outcome.”

The unrest following the election results has been severe, with reports indicating that over 50 people, including several prominent figures, have lost their lives in the violence that erupted in the wake of the contested vote.

Rusere further highlighted videos circulating online, showing Zimbabwean nationals in Mozambique with voter IDs casting ballots in favor of Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique. These individuals, according to Rusere, have testified in the videos that they were instructed to vote for Frelimo. He emphasized that this is not the first time Zimbabwe has been accused of interfering in neighboring countries’ electoral processes, pointing to a pattern of alleged interference by Mnangagwa’s administration.

“It is not the first time that the Zimbabwean President and ruling party are trying to interfere with neighboring elections, and that is not a secret,” Rusere stated. “We have videos showing Zimbabweans were given voter IDs and testified that they voted for Frelimo. This raises serious questions about the integrity of the election results.”

The allegations of electoral fraud and external interference have added to the ongoing tensions in Mozambique, where many citizens and opposition groups continue to question the legitimacy of the election outcome. The post-election violence has further exacerbated political instability, leading to calls for an independent inquiry into the alleged foreign interference and the fairness of the election process.

As the investigation by the Southern Africa Human Rights Lawyers progresses, the international community, including neighboring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, is closely monitoring the situation in Mozambique.

HEGEMONIC PRESIDENCY FOR ZAMBIA IS A CONCERN- Sensio Banda

0

THE POTENTIAL COST OF HH’S HEGEMONIC PRESIDENCY FOR ZAMBIA IS A CONCERN

By Sensio Banda, former Kasenengwa MP

Ever since gaining independence, Zambia has witnessed the presence of a “hegemonic presidency” in its political landscape.

The presidency has wielded great authority, shaping the course of Zambian politics from the days of UNIP’s founding of the republic to the recent administration of the UPND. Through its control over finances and broad appointment powers, various regimes have exercised significant influence through the hegemonic presidency, with few exceptions for presidents who passed away while in office.

It is important to emphasize that the primary objective of any “hegemonic presidency” is to maintain power at any cost, often neglecting the best interests of the nation. As a result, it can be concluded that all past administrations have displayed elements of a “hegemonic presidency”.

It is fair to say that, to a certain extent, past administrations discerned the value of hearing the voices of the people and honoring their will.

Dr. Kenneth B. Kaunda, for example, demonstrated this by accepting the amendment of the constitution to allow for multiparty democracy and early elections and ultimately accepting defeat in the 1991 general election.

Dr. Frederick T.J. Chiluba also respected the people’s will by foregoing a third-term bid. Rupiah B. Banda followed suit in 2011, graciously accepting the outcome of the general election after three years of service.

In 2021, Dr. Edgar C. Lungu showed his commitment to democracy by conceding to the people’s will regarding Constitutional Bill 10 and accepting defeat in the general election.

Is Dr. HH’s “hegemonic presidency” truly discerning its limits, the will of the people, and the country’s best interests? While past administrations have employed similar strategies to retain power, Dr. HH’s regime stands out for its excessive exertion of authority, extreme dominance over the legislative and judicial branches, and dismantling of opposition parties. The seizing of law-making abilities, widespread use of presidential decrees, and complete command over patronage and government fund, all indicate the unchecked power.

The above has resulted in a reduction of checks and balances that are essential for maintaining accountability. Dr. HH’s concentration of power has led to the erosion of the authority of key public institutions, creating a “zero-sum framework” where presidential powers have increased at the expense of the legislative and judicial branches.

If President Dr. HH continues on the path of a “hegemonic presidency,” it is important for him to consider the impact this will have on Zambia once he leaves office. Does he realize the harm being done to our government branches, public institutions, democratic freedoms, and national unity? What kind of legacy does he want to leave behind for future generations?

The President must reflect on the consequences of his governing style and work towards a more balanced distribution of power to protect our democratic young democracy . Let us hope that he takes this opportunity to rethink his approach and make positive changes for the betterment of our nation.

The Struggle Continues.

15% WITHHOLDING TAX ON REMITTENCES ABOVE $2,000: Why would you introduce a tax to curb illicit transactions because that’s a crime?- Fred M’membe

0

15% WITHHOLDING TAX ON REMITTENCES ABOVE $2,000

I have tried to consult a number of experts on this tax measure announced in the 2025 budget, which takes effect in January 2025. Most of them seem confused about what it exactly means. The questions paused are twofold:

1. Is this a revenue mobilisation measure?
2. Is it to curb illicit flows out of the country due to the FIC report of $3 billion exposed remittences?

Firstly, it is unclear whether this is a blanket tax on all remittances leaving the country, regardless, or is it for selected transaction types.

Addressing 1, above, we can discount that it’s not a revenue mobilisation measure because we understand that it’s refundable or  exempted if you have a tax clearance certificate.

Addressing 2 is a complex issue. Why would you introduce a tax to curb illicit transactions because that’s a crime? FIC has exact details of which transactions they are reporting and who is responsible? So why not just prosecute the perpetrators of such transactions instead of inconveniencing innocent citizens?

If we turn this around, are we then saying that illicit transactions will be permitted as long as you pay 15% tax? Would people involved in money laundering bother to pay 15% tax to cleanse their illegitimate money? The answer is that it’s music to their ears.

So the big question is, what is the rationale behind this policy measure?

Let’s explore this further, what will be defined as remittences above $2,000?

If I travel outside the country and use my Kwacha debit or credit card, will my expenses paid outside Zambia be deemed as remittences? I say so because the settlement for my foreign expenses paid using my Kwacha card will have to be settled in $ by my Zambian bank, which issued the card.

If I pay college fees for my son or daughter overseas, then do I have to pay 15% tax?

What if I purchase goods using online platforms using my Kwacha debit or credit card exceeding $2,000? Will that be deemed as remittences, or is it only direct bank to bank transfers that will be deemed as remittences? Currently, BoZ sets $5,000 for Bureaux and $10,000 for commercial banks as daily limits for purchasing dollars. Note that these are daily limits.

Now, we are introducing another limit at another level. Why not synchronise these limits to avert creating confusion.

Is this policy not going to create an informal international payment system? I say so because I can withdraw $10,000 from a commercial bank and send offshore using individuals? Are we aware that the biggest money transmission channel for our cross-border transactions is truck and bus drivers?

Another expert commented that could the recent sharp rise of the Kwacha rate at K27.56 per $ be as a result of this policy announcement? Could those with excess Kwacha balances be externalising money now to avoid this tax, which comes into effect in January 2025, thereby putting pressure on the dollar demand side?

All in all can the MoF provide a comprehensive guidance on how this tax measure will work rather than creating anxiety and speculation in the market.

LUNGU IS MOVED BY THE WIND, HE CAN’T BE JUMPING FROM POINT A to B IN ALLIANCES – CHABINGA

LUNGU IS MOVED BY THE WIND, HE CAN’T BE JUMPING FROM POINT A to B IN ALLIANCES – CHABINGA

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) acting president, Robert Chabinga says small political alliances are the ones that are supposed to be following former president, Edgar Lungu to gain momentum, unlike him being the one jumping in between insignificant alliances.

Chabinga said the actions of the former Head of State are only proving that he is being moved by the wind and has no purpose or direction of his own.

The leader of opposition said this when he held a press briefing in Lusaka on Sunday where in his capacity as acting PF president announced the expulsion of the former head of state, Given Lubinda and Miles Sampa among others from the party.

“It is even ironic that he is running around joining small political parties where as it should be the other way out. He is the one who is moving from point A to point B why should he be the one seeking alliances? It seems he is blown by wind.”

“Going from being the largest party to jumping between insignificant alliances. The best that he could have done, was to be the first person to unite us in the party,” Chabinga said.

Chabinga said most alliances are driven by hurt, bitterness and lack of foresight adding that the ‘New PF’  is open to alliances, but that it will engage with progressive individuals at an appropriate time as for now, it needs to put its house in order.

“The only problem is that my big man, Mr Lungu thinks he is the only one who can lead but the truth is, there are capable individuals like myself who can take leadership and others. But the selfishness of Lungu prevents such things from taking place,” Chabinga said.

He said Lungu betrayed the party members after he told them they could go for a convention and made them pay sums of money, knowing very well that he also desired to remain party leader.

“And later on he changed his mind that Alebwekelapo. That is not the situation, so my issue is that they should simply register a cooperative with President Lungu as the chairperson and apply for the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and get funding so that they stop moving up and down,” Chabinga advised.

Chabinga further advised Lunguv onbhis associates, stating that the kind of people that surround him, only flock to his compound to beg for his money.

“Like the way people flock the residence of the former President,  I pity my president, and I advised him time and again that the people that are surrounding him are just there to eat, nothing else. They are [for] politics of the belly,” said Chabinga.

Inside the Ministry of Health Scandal: The Power and Influence of a Cartel in Zambian Health Affairs

Inside the Ministry of Health Scandal: The Power and Influence of a Cartel in Zambian Health Affairs

By Justine Mooya Samu Lya Moomba
11th November 2024

In a shocking revelation, disturbing details have emerged about a powerful cartel allegedly operating within Zambia’s Ministry of Health, with deep-rooted influence and control extending into the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA).

The cartel, comprising influential figures tied to high-profile government contracts, is said to operate with the blessings of key officials and to control procurement and supply decisions to favor certain companies and individuals.
The unfolding scandal centers around two prominent figures in the alleged cartel: Mr. Malindi, owner of the medical supply company Tachmed, and Kuso Kamwambi, a member of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU).

This duo, with close ties to key decision-makers within the Ministry of Health, has reportedly exercised their influence to control procurement deals, including the hiring and firing of key personnel.

Sources indicate that Mr. Malindi, who often claims to be the cousin of the President, has repeatedly used this position to pressure government officials, including Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Permanent Secretary (PS) of Technical Services, to comply with the cartel’s demands.

This partnership allegedly wields significant power, with Ms. Kamwambi at State House reportedly aiding Mr. Malindi to shape policy decisions and oust those who resist their influence. Together, these two form the operational backbone of the cartel within the health sector.

At the center of the controversy is Mr. Justine Mulimo, Acting Director of Procurement at ZAMMSA, who has allegedly faced significant pressure from Mr. Malindi to comply with cartel-led procurement preferences. Mr. Malindi, unsatisfied with Mulimo’s diligence and his refusal to approve certain questionable procurement contracts, has reportedly demanded that Dr. Lishimpi remove him from his position.

A meeting was reportedly held over the weekend, where it was decided that Mulimo would be fired on Monday, 11th November 2024. Sources suggest that Mr. Jacob Masatunya from the Eastern Province procurement department is slated to replace Mulimo, marking yet another alleged move by the cartel to consolidate their control within ZAMMSA.

A Disturbing Pattern of Manipulation and Influence,The recent decision to fire the ZAMMSA Director-General, which was made public by the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Elijah Muchima, has raised further questions.

According to insiders, this decision may have been influenced by the same cartel, aiming to install a more compliant individual who would facilitate the cartel’s procurement agenda. Meanwhile, Minister Muchima has faced criticism for allegedly aligning with the cartel, as he reportedly prioritized their interests over the concerns of other ZAMMSA stakeholders and the public.

In a peculiar twist, the Minister reportedly traveled to Ethiopia over the weekend with the wife of Mr. Malindi, which sources claim was intended to strengthen his ties with the cartel. This has raised eyebrows within government circles, as it is seen as compromising the integrity of the Ministry’s decision-making.

The ZAMMSA agency, tasked with ensuring the reliable distribution of medical supplies, has faced ongoing disruptions since the cartel allegedly began interfering in its operations. Past officials who resisted the cartel’s influence, such as former Director Billy Mweetwa, were reportedly sidelined or removed to pave the way for more malleable leaders. Similarly, Commissioner Nyasulu, who succeeded Mweetwa and maintained an independent stance, also found himself at odds with the cartel’s agenda.

The infamous Egyptian Gold Scandal, involving the questionable handling of government-to-government procurement, highlights the extent to which cartel influence has plagued the Ministry of Health. Those who have attempted to implement transparent processes have reportedly faced retaliation from the cartel, whose members leverage their connections to protect and expand their interests.

International donors have also expressed concern over the state of affairs at ZAMMSA, raising questions about the preparedness of the agency to prevent the mismanagement that resulted in a controversial case involving 61 containers of medical supplies. Despite assurances from interim ZAMMSA leadership that the agency’s operations were improving, recent statements by Minister Muchima appear to have undermined this message, leading to the dismissal of the current Director-General.

The alleged involvement of Tachmed in securing contracts for medical supplies, alongside Aasee Pharmaceuticals, raises further questions about whether the procurement process has been compromised. Aasee Pharmaceuticals recently supplied essential ambulances under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and now seeks to monopolize additional supply contracts.

When interim ZAMMSA Director Aulituli opposed sole-sourcing of these contracts, he, too, faced opposition from cartel members.

The allegations against Mr. Malindi, Ms. Kamwambi, and others in the cartel paint a troubling picture of an institution under siege, manipulated by individuals who prioritize personal profit over public service. This manipulation risks undermining the very mandate of ZAMMSA, which has yet to fully recover from the string of disruptions and political interference.

Zambia’s Ministry of Health may require extensive reforms to restore accountability and transparency to its operations. The Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia and pharmacy unions have expressed a strong desire for change, calling for an investigation into the influence wielded by the cartel and a review of procurement practices at ZAMMSA. They seek to ensure that ZAMMSA fulfills its purpose without undue interference and serves the public as intended.

As the scandal continues to unravel, Zambia stands at a crossroads. Will the Ministry of Health take bold steps to dismantle the cartel and restore integrity to its institutions, or will it allow vested interests to further consolidate their hold on ZAMMSA and its operations? The nation awaits answers, as the actions taken in the coming days will determine whether Zambia’s health sector can regain its footing and serve its people with the transparency and accountability they deserve.

WHAT IS LAURA MITI PAID FOR?

WHAT IS LAURA MITI PAID FOR?

We have observed a consistent series of intense critiques from Laura Miti directed at the State House communications team. Her statements, often laced with an apparent animosity, seem aimed particularly at discrediting Clayson Hamasaka. While Laura Miti may hold personal disdain toward him, her repeated attempts to discredit the team deserve scrutiny.

Like Laura, we may also hold reservations about certain individuals at State House, that’s normal in every Presidency including the White House. However, it’s important to recognize the unique role and structure of the Presidency within the Zambian government.

The Presidency, by design, is not meant to defend itself in direct confrontations or public spats. It would be bathing in its own waters.

*The Role of the Presidential Communications Team*

It is neither the job of the Presidential Communications Team to engage with individuals like Emmanuel Mwamba, Chilufya Tayali, or Sean Tembo, nor to respond to opposition propaganda. Such tasks fall outside their mandate and would only distract from their primary responsibilities. If the team were to focus on addressing every critique, they would find themselves entangled in endless public disputes.

The Zambian government has established a variety of channels and departments specifically tasked with communicating government initiatives and countering misinformation. These include:

The Ministry of Information, through the Minister and Permanent Secretary.

The Director and Spokesperson at Cabinet Office.

Public Relations Officers (PROs) across ministries, government quasi-bodies, councils, and other entities.

Party Spokesperson, Party Media Team, and other designated roles.

Laura Miti should acknowledge that these institutions are equipped and mandated to handle communication of government programs, as well as fact-checking and addressing misinformation. The Presidential Communications Team, on the other hand, is tasked with representing the Presidency itself and should not be expected to directly engage in confrontations with various critics. To demand otherwise reveals a misunderstanding of their role and responsibilities.

*Gaps in Government Communication*

Admittedly, there exists a gap in effectively communicating government programs. This is precisely where the roles of the aforementioned platforms become crucial. The Presidential Communications Team cannot—and should not—be expected to promote every government program or policy. For instance, communication regarding Constituency Development Fund (CDF) implementation should come from council PROs, who are better positioned to share these success stories at the local level. Similarly, misinformation should be addressed by the Chief Government Spokesperson, Party Spokesperson, and Ministry PROs, who each have the remit to clarify matters within their respective areas.

The Presidency should not have to explain issues such as low water levels at Kariba when ZESCO’s spokesperson is available to provide such information. Demanding that the Presidential Communications Team cover every government matter is both unrealistic and counterproductive.

*Questioning Laura Miti’s Role*

It appears that Laura Miti’s personal grievances may be influencing her public criticisms. While we recognize her right to provide checks and balances, we urge her to approach her critiques with realism and fairness. This raises an important question: what is Laura Miti’s role in government? What exactly is she paid to do? Is her focus solely on critiquing the Presidential Communications Team, or does she have broader responsibilities?

In closing, we hope Laura Miti reflects on her approach and considers the structured roles within government communication before casting aspersions on those tasked with upholding the Presidency.

IMF Reaches Staff-Level Agreement on the Fourth Review of the Extended Credit Facility with Zambia

*IMF Reaches Staff-Level Agreement on the Fourth Review of the Extended Credit Facility with Zambia*

November 11, 2024

The Zambian authorities and the IMF team have reached a staff-level agreement on the authorities’ economic policies and reforms to conclude the fourth review of the 38-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement.

The lingering effects of the drought have hit Zambia’s economic landscape harder than anticipated, with reduced agricultural output and electricity shortages impacting economic activity widely. Real GDP growth is now forecasted at 1.2 percent for 2024.

https://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2024/11/11/pr-24413-zambia-imf-reaches-agreement-on-4th-review-of-ecf

The authorities mobilized emergency relief to the most vulnerable population while maintaining fiscal consolidation to restore debt sustainability. Going forward, mobilizing revenues and stepping up structural and governance reforms will help Zambia unlock growth and safeguard hard-gained progress.

Washington, DC: An International Monetary Fund staff team, led by Mercedes Vera Martin, engaged in discussions with the Zambian authorities in Lusaka during October 2-15, focusing on reforms and policy priorities underpinning the fourth review of the IMF-supported program under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

Discussions continued during the IMF/WB Annual Meetings in Washington. This staff-level agreement is subject to IMF Management approval and Executive Board consideration. Upon completion of the review, Zambia will have access to about $185.5 million in financing (SDR 139.9 million).

At the conclusion of the discussions, Ms. Vera Martin issued the following statement:

“We are pleased to announce that the Zambian authorities and the IMF team have reached a staff-level agreement on economic policies and reforms for the fourth review of Zambia’s ECF arrangement.”

“The outlook for 2024 has deteriorated; Real GDP growth is now projected at 1.2 percent, from 2.3 percent projected in June, as extensive electricity shortfalls have impacted economic activity significantly. Contractions in agriculture (20.6 percent y/y) and electricity (9.6 percent y/y) and a deceleration in non-mining non-agriculture activity (from 7.7 percent y/y in 2023H1 to 3.5 percent y/y in 2024H1) amid intensifying power shortages dragged growth to 1.9 percent (y/y) in the first half of 2024. Inflation accelerated to 15.7 percent in October 2024, driven by food prices and past kwacha depreciation, drifting further from the inflation target band (6–8 percent). Subdued imports, increased grants and an anticipated increase in copper exports should shift the current account to a small surplus in 2024.”

“Fiscal performance in 2024 has been marked by constrained domestic financing and spending compression. The end-June primary surplus reached 3.4 percent of GDP, well above the program target. The primary balance (cash basis) in 2024, is projected at a surplus of 0.9 percent of GDP, much stronger than the program deficit target of 0.7 percent. Despite the consolidation, the authorities have upscaled social spending to support the most vulnerable through the drought.”

“The medium-term outlook remains favorable, but with significant downside risks. Growth in 2025 is projected at 6.2 percent (revised from 6.6 percent) as electricity output is not expected to fully recover. This outlook is bolstered by a recovery in agricultural and mining production and the completion of the debt restructuring and is underpinned by prudent policies and ongoing reforms. Inflation is expected to converge to the target band by end-2025, given strong base effects. The external position is projected to strengthen on account of higher exports and FDI, supporting reserve accumulation.”

“The authorities have reiterated their strong commitment to prudent macroeconomic policies and ambitious reforms to sustain economic stability and boost medium-term growth. Discussions revolved around four key pillars. First, the 2025 Budget will preserve social spending while maintaining fiscal consolidation over the program period. The authorities have committed to additional domestic revenues—such as rationalizing tax exemptions, harmonizing the CIT, and indexing excises to inflation—and identify contingent spending measures to sustain fiscal consolidation efforts and support debt sustainability.”

“Second, building buffers against economic and climate-related shocks is paramount to restore and safeguard debt sustainability. Improving tax compliance, broadening the tax base, and enhancing tax policy remain top priorities. Meanwhile, public financial management reforms will help improve the transparency and efficiency of public spending, notably through enhanced cash management and SOEs oversight.

“Third, monetary policy must remain agile to combat inflation while preserving exchange rate flexibility. With a negative real policy rate, looser liquidity conditions, and strong growth in monetary aggregates, the Bank of Zambia should focus on driving inflation toward the target band. Efforts to promote the use of the domestic currency in domestic transactions should be accompanied by market-driven incentives once macroeconomic stability is consolidated, hedging instruments to manage exchange rate risks are available to the private sector, and prudential regulation is in place to help internalize financial risks associated with dollarization. The Bank of Zambia will continue strengthening banking supervision, including by developing an effective deposit insurance scheme and reviewing the financial services framework.

“Finally, faster progress in structural reforms to reduce distortions for the private sector remains key for economic recovery and diversification. This includes enhancing transparency in the energy sector to foster competitive open access to the pipeline and reduce fuel costs for all. Improving the business climate by reducing regulatory distortions will also help create a more even-leveled playfield. Enhanced State-Owned Enterprises’ transparency, along with the implementation of the anti-corruption legislation, would bolster governance and public accountability.”

“The IMF staff team expresses gratitude to the Zambian authorities for their constructive dialogue, warm hospitality, and strong cooperation. A Board meeting is anticipated by mid-December.”

Here are the highest-paid dead Black celebrities of 2024

0

They are dead, but their legacy lives on as they continue to top the charts of the highest-paid dead celebrities.

As per Forbes, music catalog income as well as estate deals continue to be the top income generator for dead musicians. According to the business magazine, the king of pop music, Michael Jackson, is the highest-earning dead artist in the world.

Of the 13 people featured in the Forbes list, five of them are blacks. Forbes calculated the earnings of the dead artists from sales, streams, licensing deals and other sources between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024, as well as estate acquisitions made or announced during the same period.

Michael Jackson: $600 Million

Died: June 25, 2009

In 2023, Michael Jackson earned $115 million thanks in part to the Broadway hit MJ: The Musical, making him the highest-earning dead artist. In 2022, he was the third-highest Black earner, raking in $75 million on the back of the return of the Jackson-themed Cirque de Soleil show in Las Vegas, which was suspended due to pandemic restrictions.

The king of pop has topped the chart of the highest-paid dead celebrities again this year. In August, a judge ruled that the $600 million catalog sale of his publishing and recorded masters’ rights to Sony could go on despite protestations from Jackson’s mother, Katharine Jackson. The dead artist is also reigning in Germany, thanks to the international touring version of MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical. As per his longtime estate attorney, John Branca, tickets for the Hamburg opening in 2025 are selling out, with the potential to be the show’s largest market.

Also, “additional productions in London, Las Vegas, and the U.S. tour—separate from the Broadway show—pull in $6 million weekly,” according to Forbes.

Prince: $35 million

Restoration and archiving of Brown’s possessions in the 60-plus acre property are underway, with the goal of turning the home, and nearby city of Augusta, into a regional tourist attraction on par with Elvis’ Graceland.”

Whitney Houston: $13 million

Died: February 11, 2012

The Whitney Houston estate recently celebrated one of its biggest years thanks to a biopic and several brand collaborations, according to Forbes. The platform wrote last year that the film Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody grossed nearly $13 million worldwide.

Also, MAC Cosmetics released a makeup collection with the Houston estate, which is managed by Pat Houston, her sister-in-law, and Primary Wave.

This year, Forbes wrote that the late artist is winning big in Sin City’s favorite casino game, the slot machine. “Gamblers can try their luck at Whitney-branded slots that play her music and videos, while income is generated through a royalty percentage that increases as more games are played,” the magazine said.

Zimbabweans Fume as Loadshedding Worsens Despite Addition Of 300 MW

ZESA Power Mystery: Zimbabweans Fume as Loadshedding Worsens Despite Addition Of 300 MW

Zimbabweans are growing increasingly frustrated as ZESA, the country’s power utility, imposes longer hours of loadshedding blackouts despite an apparent recent boost of 300 megawatts (MW) to the grid.

Residents, who were hopeful that the extra power would ease their situation, are now questioning why power cuts have worsened instead of improving.

The mounting frustration has led many to social media, where they’re voicing their concerns and calling for transparency from ZESA.

With outages now lasting up to 16-18 hours daily, people are demanding explanations for this unexpected development.

‘This is Shocking’
On ZESA’s social media pages, Zimbabweans have not held back, directly addressing the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a subsidiary of ZESA responsible for power generation.

Many are questioning the accuracy of the electricity generation data and demanding to know if the reported 300 MW addition is actually reaching consumers.

Twitter user Godfrey Shumba shared his disbelief, writing,

“Every time we generate more power, loadshedding increases. This is shocking.”

His comment reflects the frustration of citizens who feel their daily lives are being severely disrupted by these outages.

Allan Shoriwa expressed a similar sentiment.“To us, it’s the same – no electricity. From the day you added 300 MW, it’s even worse,” he posted, suggesting that power outages have grown more severe since the announcement of increased capacity.

Another frustrated resident, tweeting under the handle @TKawondera, questioned the meaning behind the figures being shared by ZPC.

“Kindly elaborate on what these numbers mean concerning the electricity situation in the country,” he demanded.

‘Are the Figures Even Accurate?’
Doubts around the actual electricity supply are not uncommon, with many Zimbabweans feeling misled by official announcements.

Tendai Forichi, another Twitter user, raised a pointed question on the matter.

“What’s the daily national demand for electricity, and is the 15-hour loadshedding currently experienced in some suburbs proportionate with the current power generation stats?” he asked.

Forichi’s query highlights widespread scepticism about whether the figures given by ZESA truly reflect the reality on the ground.

In addition to doubts about the power supply, others question the regularity of updates from ZESA, claiming they are often vague or fail to address real concerns.

A Twitter user named Father posted, “These updates are not useful. We have blackouts all the time.”

This post echoed a shared sentiment that the information provided lacks transparency and does little to assure residents that the situation will improve.

Growing Calls for Accountability
The situation has led many Zimbabweans to question ZESA’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

For some, the apparent discrepancies in power supply statistics have eroded trust in the institution.

One outspoken critic, tweeting under the name Gonawapotera WaGoveranyika, went as far as labelling ZESA as “the best liars ever,” implying a deep-seated mistrust among citizens.

Amid these mounting grievances, the public is calling for more straightforward communication and reliable statistics that reflect actual conditions.

Many argue that if 300 MW has indeed been added to the grid, there should be a noticeable improvement in power availability. Yet, the reverse seems true, leading people to wonder where the additional power is going.

While ZESA has yet to issue a formal response addressing the questions raised on social media, it remains clear that Zimbabweans want more than just reassurances.

Many are hoping for tangible results that will reduce the hours of loadshedding and bring stability to their daily routines.

In the meantime, residents continue to adapt to the power cuts, with many turning to alternative sources such as solar energy, generators, and gas stoves.

However, with the cost of such solutions being prohibitively high for most, the demand for answers from ZESA remains strong.

“Dirty Politics And Succession”: Why Videos Of Equatorial Guinea Politician Baltasar Ebang Engonga Leaked

Authorities in Equatoria Guinea allegedly leaked lula lula videos of Baltasar Ebang Engonga as part of presidential succession battles.

The Adulterous Drama
Last week, Baltasar brought the whole of Africa to a standstill after videos of him marinating women leaked. Over 400 videos are alleged to have leaked, and they include multiple women. Most of them are the wives of his relatives, siblings and the wives of politicians and public figures in Equatorial Guinea.

Following the risque leak, Equatorial Guinea effected a wholesale suspension of all officials who engaged in trysts within Government offices. Baltasar had mounted some of the women in the 400 videos in his work office, carefully monitoring the CCTV to ensure no one would bust him.

The Equatorial Guinea government also banned the sharing of the videos on social media, including via WhatsApp.

Why Videos Of Equatorial Guinea Politician Baltasar Ebang Engonga Leaked

Details emerging from Equatorial Guinea suggested that the leaking of the 400 videos was part of a smear campaign against Baltasar.

The BBC reported that Baltasar, formerly the head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, is President Teodoro Obiang Nguema’s nephew. He is thought to be eying the country’s presidency when the President steps down. Obiang has ruled the Central African nation since 1979 and is the world’s longest-serving President.

Baltasar was arrested on October 25, accused of stealing a large amount of money from the government and putting it in secret accounts in the Cayman Islands.

He was then taken to Black Beach prison in the capital, Malabo. Authorities seized his phones and computers, and a few days later, private videos started to appear online.

The first batch of Baltasar’s videos dropped days later on Telegram and soon made their way to platforms like X and WhatsApp.

Equatoguinean activist Nsang Christia Esimi Cruz said the leak is part of succession battles in the country. He said Vice-President Teodoro Obiang Mangue, the President’s son, is elbowing out people who might challenge his way to the throne:

“What we are seeing is the end of an era, the end of the current president, and there is a succession [question], and this is the internal fighting we are seeing.”

Black mother takes DNA test after many claimed fair-skinned child wasn’t hers

A Black mother took a DNA test after she received criticism from people who questioned whether her fair-skinned daughter was truly hers.

Alex, a mother of three alongside her husband, Rob, who is white, welcomed their two-year-old daughter, Pudge Pudge, according to IVF, yet she has faced criticism after her daughter appeared to be fair-skinned.

According to a Daily Mail report, the couple revealed that they were “surprised” by how “different” Pudge Pudge looked, particularly when compared to their other two children, who have dark skin.

“I was super surprised,” Alex told Truly. “Her ears weren’t even dark. They were really, really white!”

Due to the skin tone differences, Alex stated that she faces “a lot of negativity” from online trolls and people in her daily life.

In one instance, the mother of three recalled shopping at a mall with Pudge Pudge when a staff member stopped her and said, “Things didn’t look right” while threatening to call security.

“Rob ended up handling the whole thing for me and essentially telling her to leave us alone,” Alex said. “I should be able to hang out with my child the way I want to!”

Alex also revealed that even other Black people have criticized her for being in an interracial relationship.

“I’ve seen people that appear to be Black online say I shouldn’t have that white man’s child, all kinds of things,” she said.

The mother of three was also accused of “renting” Pudge Pudge as a “content baby” for social media.

In response to the criticism, the Black mother decided to undergo a DNA test to confirm that her daughter was indeed her biological child.

“We decided to do the DNA test because she was so white, and we did use IVF to get pregnant with her, and mistakes do happen,” Alex said.

After sharing their story, the couple has received lots of support despite the initial backlash and online trolls.

“As a Black mom with a ‘white-passing’ child living in a primarily white area in Georgia, this happens every day,” one commenter wrote. “Being followed to listen in on our conversations, asking where her mom is, suggesting I’m a nanny, etc. Keep your head up, mama. Your family is beautiful.”

“I can understand people being confused, but being rude is crossing the line. This is a sweet and beautiful family”, said another.

“People are so weird. They have no idea how mixed children work. You two are doing amazing. Don’t listen to the weirdos”, a third commented.

Many online comments compared Pudge Pudge to her father, with some supporters stating that the two-year-old’s resemblance to her father clearly stands out.

“She looks like daddy. People are so ignorant,” one fan commented, while another wrote, “She looks EXACTLY like her dad! That’s so sweet. Some strong genes for sure.”

This is why the Michael Jackson biopic has been delayed to 2025

0

The release date for the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson, has been delayed by six months. Initially set to premiere on April 18, 2025, Lionsgate has announced that the film will now hit theaters on October 3, 2025.

The cast includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson, with other notable actors like Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Jessica Sula rounding out the ensemble, as reported by Daily Mail.

The film will explore various aspects of the pop star’s life and career, including his legal troubles. The film will address the 1993 lawsuit accusing Jackson of child sexual abuse, which he settled, and the 2005 trial in Santa Barbara, California, where he was acquitted of separate child sexual abuse claims.

The Lionsgate comedy “Good Fortune,” featuring a star-studded cast including Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, and Keanu Reeves, is set to premiere on October 17, 2025.

Meanwhile, the studio has high expectations for the upcoming biopic “Michael,” which delves into the life of Michael Jackson. Lionsgate president of worldwide television distribution, Jim Packer, expressed high expectations for the forthcoming biopic “Michael,” directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Speaking at the Gabelli Media & Entertainment Symposium, Packer said there is a significant buzz surrounding the film, which is amplified with each photo release.

He predicted it would be the biggest movie Lionsgate has ever had, drawing comparisons to recent successful biopics about musical legends like Elvis Presley, Elton John, and Freddie Mercury.

He added that they will focus on intellectual property by producing and distributing film and TV projects.

The trailer received a strong reaction when it was shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April, according to Variety.

The preview, part of Lionsgate’s showcase to movie theater owners, featured a voice attributed to Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, saying, “There might be some people who think you’re different and that’s gonna make life a little harder for you.”

“But you never were like anyone else – Michael, you have a very special light – so make that light shine onto the world.”

A voice attributed to Michael Jackson is heard saying, “When I’m not onstage everything feels foreign to me.”

Ahead of the cinematic showcase, the film’s producer Graham King said the movie would be “an inside look at the most prolific artist who ever lived” as “there are elements of drama, intrigue and emotional states.”

King has spent seven years developing a comprehensive Michael Jackson biopic, conducting hundreds of interviews to ensure an in-depth portrayal of Jackson’s life.

King expressed that many doubted the possibility of finding a suitable actor to portray Michael Jackson. However, he believes Jaafar Jackson has done an exceptional job in the role.

Miss Universe contestant expelled from competition after visiting her boyfriend’s hotel room

0

Miss Universe contestant Italy Mora has been expelled from the renowned beauty pageant after she allegedly made an unauthorized visit to her boyfriend’s hotel room.

The 19-year-old delegate was to represent Panama in the upcoming competition, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Mexico City, Mexico, and feature 130 contestants from around the globe.

However, Mora’s aspirations were dashed after the Miss Universe organization announced that she would be dropping out of the competition, local media reported.

The pageant organisers said she had been subjected to an “exhaustive evaluation by our disciplinary commission” over the purported “personal error,” but neglected to specify the exact reason for her departure.

However, rumors started swirling that Mora — who was staying at a hotel in Mexico — had joined her boyfriend, Juan Abadía, in his hotel room, without permission from organizers, Jam Press reported.

The Panamian pageant contestant has addressed the allegations, claiming that her exit stemmed from a heated argument with Miss Universe Panama Director César Anel Rodríguez.

She claimed she had gotten into it with the pageant boss over the event’s lack of organization.

In fact, Abadía, who was present during the argument, reportedly said he was in Mexico to help assist Mora with needs the organization allegedly didn’t provide.

Those needs included food, hotel fees and clothing — most notably a $7,000 Carolina Herrera dress, according to her boyfriend, who is a businessman and trainer.

The fallout from the dispute ultimately resulted in the beauty queen getting expelled.

“There’s a lot of speculation that needs to be cleared up because it’s impacting my reputation, and emotionally, it’s been difficult,” Mora said. “If I weren’t with my boyfriend, I’d be struggling even more.”

She attempted to convince the pageant organisers to overturn the ruling, but they declined.

Ultimately, Mora said she agreed to “take responsibility for my actions and accept the consequences.”

Miss Universe representatives addressed her dismissal in a statement.

“It is important to note that we made this decision with the utmost respect for all parties involved,” they wrote. “Our No. 1 priority remains the welfare and transparency for all of our candidates, who exemplify diversity, talent and dedication.”

Despite Mora’s abrupt departure, a new contestant will not be sent to represent Panama in her place.

Mazoe War in UK: Businessman Insists He Has Monopoly, Warns Competitors to “Stay Out

Mazoe War Erupts! UK Businessman Claims Monopoly on Zimbabwean Goods
A storm has erupted on social media after UK-based Zimbabwean businessman Adam Rhys Lurie, better known as “Jahman Adamski,” declared that he controls the UK market for Zimbabwean products like Mazoe Orange Crush and other dry goods. Lurie has warned competitors against attempting to enter the market, claiming it would be a financial disaster for anyone trying.

In a bold series of posts on X, the businessman issued what he described as a “friendly warning,” but the tone struck many as anything but friendly.

Adamski did not hold back on expressing his thoughts on potential competitors and even government-backed efforts to widen the market.

“I Hold a Monopoly”
Lurie’s message on X left little to the imagination as he detailed the extent of his influence in the UK Zimbabwean goods market.

He warned competitors that he and his associates had a “stranglehold” on the supply of these products and that newcomers would be up against formidable challenges.

In his own words, Adamski stated,

“I hold a monopoly on the market, and no matter how much the embassy or some guy wants to try to convince you to invest, you will fail. We have been doing this for years and know exactly how it works.”

According to Adamski, he was approached by the Zimbabwean embassy to discuss a potential expansion of Zimbabwean goods in the UK.

However, he dismissed the embassy’s approach and declined to participate in their discussions.

“A few months back, I was called by the embassy to arrange a meeting about Zimbabwean goods. I fobbed them off,” he explained. “They then roped in another businessman to go see them. I told him they’re a bunch of idiots and can go hang.”

The businessman claims that those working in the embassy are pushing to bring Zimbabwean goods into the UK without realising the complexities of the market.

“They actually believe they can get someone here in the UK to be the sole distributor for Mazoe,” Adamski wrote. “Well, all I can say is those fingers will get burnt because the pie is hot.”

The Battle for Mazoe: Chin’ono Responds
Adamski’s fiery message seemed aimed at journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, who recently announced that Zimbabwean favourites like Mazoe and Cerevita would soon be widely available in the UK at lower prices.

In his post, Chin’ono shared his dream of making Zimbabwean products as iconic and accessible in the UK as global brands.

Chin’ono explained,

“To me, these two products represent part of our identity as Zimbabweans. They will be coming to Britain at a lower cost than ever before, and we should ensure they reach beyond our Southern African community in Britain, aiming to make them as iconic as Coke or KFC are globally.”

In a follow-up response to Adamski’s post, Chin’ono defended his vision, pointing out that he intended to make Zimbabwean products accessible to a broader audience.

“Whenever I visit different countries, I look for opportunities and share them with Zimbabweans on my social media platforms,” he wrote. “I have always supported Zim businesses both at home and abroad without taking a cent, because it is simply my nature to want to see others do well.”

Chin’ono added that he wants Zimbabwean products like Mazoe to be affordable and available to everyone, not just niche markets or select suppliers.

“My target market is the locals, and reaching them requires hard work, but it is hard work I am prepared to put in. I believe there is more money to be made by making Zimbabwean and African products accessible to locals in foreign countries than by only targeting the Zim and African market.”

“It’s a Cutthroat Industry”
Adamski warned that newcomers could lose money if they attempted to enter the market. He elaborated on his strategy to control prices and deter competition, sharing,

“Ask the last six people who tried to enter the market over the past five years what happened to them…we will soak up your first container so you think you’ve done well. The moment your second container is on the water, we will dump your first container on the market.”

He was unapologetic about his approach, saying,

“We know how it works, and nobody can get in our way.”

He added that even multinational companies prefer working with him due to his established market presence.

“Coca-Cola owns Schweppes, and they would never drop the likes of us who supply the majority of the UK, for someone who doesn’t have a market at all,” he asserted. “You can have one million followers and will fail. We will make sure of that. We control the market.”

His message also contained a direct warning to Chin’ono, advising him to reconsider his plans.

“Consider this a friendly warning, Mr Chin’ono! This is our turf, and you will lose a lot of money,” he said.

Social Media Reacts: “Gatekeeping on Steroids”
Adamski’s post quickly went viral on X, sparking both outrage and amusement. Many criticised his tone and his admission of anti-competitive tactics. Some even tagged the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, urging them to review his statements for potential anti-competitive behaviour.

One user, Edson (@king_nashe), wrote,

“Please review this post for potential anti-competitive conduct. The author openly describes strategies to block new entrants, control prices, and deter competition in the UK market. This behaviour violates UK competition laws.”

Another user, Fadzi wemaLEGO (@ndinifadzi), commented,

“All of this so that you folks keep selling Mazowe at $18 a bottle? That market needs to be opened all the way up!”

In response to Adamski’s “friendly warning,” user Tendai Joe (@Tendaijoe) remarked,

“Friendly warning? This sounds more like gatekeeping on steroids! Since when does importing Mazoe become a cutthroat turf war? Markets evolve, and there’s room for everyone who wants to bring something fresh to the table.”

Others noted the irony in Adamski’s rhetoric, with Bloggo Jones (@BloggoJones) stating,

“Trying to keep Mazoe at almost $20 a bottle is madness! You’re also trying to hide behind black folk like some revolutionary, but you’re lining your own pockets? Peak ‘Nuevo-Rhody’ behaviour!”

The online community remains divided, with some supporting Adamski’s stance as protecting Zimbabwean businesses abroad, while others see his tactics as self-serving and a hindrance to market diversity.

Mary J. Blige Praises Longtime Friend Diddy; Says He Helped Her To Be Ambitious In Her Career

0

Mary J. Blige and Diddy share a long history of friendship in the music industry. This friendship is backed by collaboration, camaraderie, and a few bumps along the way.

Today, Mary J. Blige is an icon, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, they say, and a Grammy Award winner, an Emmy Award winner, and a two-time Oscar nominee.

She is now 52, but when she was 18, her unique voice coupled with her deft, confessional songwriting skills led her from the housing projects in Yonkers, New York, to the hearts of Manhattan’s recording studios.

She became the youngest and first female artist signed to Uptown Records and debuted her album in 1992 titled, What’s the 411?

She followed this up with her 1994 album My Life, which was produced largely by Sean “Diddy” Combs, then known as Puff Daddy.

According to her, she was “afraid of success” when she first entered the music business.

Mary J. Blige confessed that she took a long time to accept her status as a trailblazer, and it wasn’t until she met Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in the early ’90s that she began to change her outlook.

She stated, “I was not as ambitious as Puff. When I met him, I was afraid of success, afraid to do anything that could put so much attention on me. When you come from where I come from, you’re scared to be ambitious. You’re scared to want more,” she told the outlet.

She said when she met Diddy, he was the complete opposite.

“He was such a good thing for me because I needed what he had—to be excited to be seen, to have the lights on him but it took some years to grow into that.”

Mary J. Blige, also noted that Diddy, who produced her debut album What’s the 411?, made her believe that she deserved her fame and wanted to see her be successful more than she “wanted it” herself.

In turn, Mary J. Blige praised her friend as a “pioneer” and “unstoppable force.”

John Legend’s manager Talks About Terrifying Experience At Diddy’s Freak Party

0

John Legend’s manager, Ty Stiklorius, has recalled a “terrifying” experience when she once attended a party organized by embattled singer Sean “Diddy” Combs.

In a recent opinion piece in the New York Times, she chronicled feeling “trapped” by one of Diddy’s friends at the event in 1997 but managing to escape.

“Twenty-seven years ago, I was on a family vacation in the Caribbean, and my brother and I finagled our way into a New Year’s Eve party on a yacht docked at St. Barts.

“I was a recent college graduate and it was hard not to be overwhelmed by the slew of boldface names onboard. But the sheen of the situation wore off quickly,” Stiklorius wrote.

Stiklorius explained that she was “directed into a bedroom by a man who seemed to be an associate of the party’s host, Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs,” that she thought was a disco room.

“To this day, I can’t remember how I managed to talk my way out of that terrifying situation…Perhaps my nervous babbling — ‘My brother’s on this boat, and he’s probably looking for me!’ — convinced him to unlock the bedroom door and let me go,” she noted.

The manager added that news about Diddy’s recent indictment brought back memories of the incident on the yacht.”

“I do now know, after 20 years as a music industry executive, that what happened that night was no aberration — it was an indicator of a pervasive culture in the music industry that actively fostered sexual misconduct and exploited the lives and bodies of those hoping to make it in the business,” Stiklorius added.

According to her, the power structure in the music industry allowed wealthy, entitled male gatekeepers to dominate pathways to success.

She claimed that women, especially, face dangers in studios, tour buses, and offices, which she believes are “deeply ingrained” into the industry’s culture.

“But there is hope — we might finally be on the cusp of real change in the culture of the industry, thanks to shifts in the business model that have loosened the grip of exploitative gatekeepers,” she said, referring to how technology has allowed people to put out their won works without necessarily going through an industry boss.

TOO EARLY TO CALL WHO CAN EMERGE WINNER IN 2026…..BUT A WELL ORGANIZED OPPOSITION CAN CAUSE TROUBLE FOR THE RULING PARTY

TOO EARLY TO CALL WHO CAN EMERGE WINNER IN 2026

…..BUT A WELL ORGANIZED OPPOSITION CAN CAUSE TROUBLE FOR THE RULING PARTY

As Zambia heads towards 2026 general elections many opinions of the potential outcomes of the general elections are beginning to emerge in many social media forums.

These opinions are based on various sources of information and factors.

THE RULING PARTY

The UPND
administration under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema has been in charge of Zambia’s social economic persues after having won the 2021 elections.

The UPND victory in 2021 was viewed as a victory of hope for many people particularly the unemployed youths, low income households, small and medium scale farmers, street vendors among many other demographics of citizens.

President Hakainde was viewed as the modern “messiah” of Zambia.

The citizens were assured – promised that a victory of President Hakainde Hichilema was a victory for the restoration of social economic hope and growth.

At three years of the UPND administration being in charge of Zambia, mixed midterm scorecards for the UPND have emerged with many citizens rating the UPND administration very poorly. People’s hope of economic restoration has not been delivered. The cost of living has skyrocketed to threatening levels of poverty.

Many people are disappointed that President Hakainde Hichilema has not delivered on many of his campaign promises.

DEMOCRATIC SPACE

It has been the concern of many stakeholders that, government has been systematically attempting to completely eliminate the voices of  critics. Recently some Diplomats accredited to, Zambia joined the call to allow citizens and politicall parties to without intimidation or restrictions enjoy their right to organize, assemble and enjoy democratic constitutional  freedoms.

COURT RULINGS

Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema some court rulings have raised eyebrows as well as concerns about the separation of power and independence of the Judiciary in Zambia. Many citizens are of the views that the Judiciary’s autonomy is under serious threats, the independent Judiciary helps in the promotion of as well as nurturing the Growth of democracy in Zambia.

PUBLIC ORDER ACT

Many stakeholders in Zambia’s democracy believe that the UPND administration under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema has been abusing the public order Act to limit the freedoms of opposition political parties in Zambia.  While in opposition President Hakainde Hichilema condemned the abuse of the public order Act and promised to do better on that score.

THE OPPOSITION

Given the nature of Zambian politics it is extremely difficult for any   opposition political party  to solely score victory in 2026. A fragmented opposition is an added advantage to the incumbent and his party.

The opposition must craft their on ground messages, social media messages to promote their manifestos, ideologies and policies.

The current prevailing people’s temperament actually favors the opposition, though it does not guarantee them victory without serious hard work.

CIVIL SOCIETY AND MEDIA

The civil society and media will equally play a critical role in the run up to the 2026 general elections. These entities will act as neutral referees. They have a role to educate and inform citizens without any biases.

The UPND’s Ruthless Political Calculations: A Blueprint for One-Party Rule?- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

The UPND’s Ruthless Political Calculations: A Blueprint for One-Party Rule?

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

In a series of brazen political maneuvers, the United Party for National Development (UPND) government has shifted its support from Miles Sampa—who allegedly played a key role in destabilizing Zambia’s main opposition, the Patriotic Front (PF)—to Chabinga, who appears to be the latest pawn in the UPND’s political game. Sampa, widely believed to have enjoyed state backing, controversially declared himself PF President through a “bogus convention,” an event seen as orchestrated to fracture PF from within. The government-owned media outlet ZNBC even broadcasted this spectacle, signaling its endorsement. However, Sampa’s meteoric rise has now been abruptly halted as the UPND pivots to Chabinga—a new face they are intent on promoting as the legitimate leader of PF.

Chabinga, thrust into the political spotlight, is now receiving similar government backing, with extensive media coverage and other resources, despite flouting a court injunction that bars him from assuming PF’s presidency. This blatant disregard for the rule of law raises urgent and uncomfortable questions: Why is the UPND so obsessed with interfering in PF’s internal affairs? More crucially, what long-term damage will this manipulation inflict on Zambia’s fragile democracy?

From Sampa to Chabinga: A Disturbing and Dangerous Pattern of Political Interference

The UPND’s transition from Sampa to Chabinga is not a spontaneous or opportunistic move; it is part of a carefully calculated strategy. The pattern is unmistakable: first Sampa, now Chabinga—each allegedly benefiting from government support designed to destabilize and undermine PF’s leadership. Despite a clear court injunction barring Chabinga from claiming the PF presidency, ZNBC and ZANIS, both government-controlled media, aired his press conference, demonstrating the UPND’s willingness to trample on the rule of law for its own political advantage. This behavior reveals an alarming, calculated objective: to reduce PF to political irrelevance, erasing it from Zambia’s political landscape and depriving the country of a genuine opposition.

This ongoing political interference is a direct assault on Zambia’s democratic foundations. By installing UPND surrogates as PF leaders, the UPND is not simply undermining a political party—it is rendering Zambia’s largest opposition party a hollow, powerless shadow. This is not about fostering healthy political competition; it is about manipulating the system to ensure that any opposition exists only as a token, under the complete control of the ruling party.

The UPND’s True Motive: A Ruthless Power Grab at the Expense of Democracy

In a functioning democracy, opposition parties are essential. They are the guardians of checks and balances, upholders of accountability, and voices for the diverse concerns of the population. Yet, the UPND’s strategy of endorsing weak, government-backed surrogates to take over PF’s leadership is a clear effort to create a compliant, ineffective opposition that serves the interests of the ruling party alone.

If left unchecked, this politically engineered manipulation will permanently alter Zambia’s political landscape, entrenching one-party dominance and eroding the very foundation of multi-party democracy. A government that truly respects democratic values would seek to strengthen the opposition, not obliterate it. The UPND’s actions force us to confront a chilling question: Is this government committed to democracy, or is it simply using democracy as a tool to consolidate and retain power?

State Media and Judicial Integrity: Both Under Attack

The government-controlled media’s role in broadcasting Chabinga’s press conference, in flagrant defiance of a court injunction, raises grave concerns about media impartiality and the independence of institutions in Zambia. When state-run outlets like ZNBC and ZANIS become propaganda arms of the government, the very idea of an unbiased, public platform for debate and discussion is destroyed. In a true democracy, the media should serve as a neutral space for diverse perspectives—not as a mouthpiece for the ruling party’s political agenda.

Equally disturbing is the government’s flagrant disregard for judicial authority. Judicial independence is the bedrock of any democratic society, ensuring that laws apply equally to all individuals and institutions, regardless of political affiliation. By openly flouting a court injunction against Chabinga’s leadership claims, the UPND is sending a dangerous message: that Zambia’s judiciary can be sidelined for political convenience. This undermines the rule of law, weakens public trust in the judicial system, and endangers Zambia’s democratic stability. If this trend continues unchecked, we will be left with a government that operates without any legal or institutional constraints, creating a state where power is abused and the rule of law is meaningless.

A Call for Immediate Action: Defend Democracy, Defend Zambia

The UPND’s interference in PF’s leadership is nothing short of an assault on Zambia’s democratic norms. Zambians deserve a political system where leaders rise to power based on merit, ideas, and popular support—not through government manipulation. If this manipulation continues, the UPND’s actions will destabilize Zambia’s political environment, silence dissent, and destroy any meaningful opposition.

For Zambia’s democracy to thrive, it is essential that transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law are upheld. It is not just the responsibility of the government to protect these values, but also of civil society, the media, and every citizen. The UPND’s actions serve as a wake-up call to all Zambians: now is the time to demand unwavering commitment to democracy and integrity from political institutions. If Zambia is to preserve its democratic legacy, citizens must actively defend these core principles, ensuring that the future is shaped by free, fair, and open political competition.

Conclusion: Zambia Deserves True Representation and Uncompromised Accountability

The UPND government’s shift from Sampa to Chabinga illustrates an alarming willingness to manipulate Zambia’s democratic institutions for short-term political gain. This raises critical questions: Why is the government so determined to dismantle PF’s leadership? What will this political interference mean for Zambia’s future as a multi-party democracy?

For Zambia’s democracy to survive, the Hichilema administration must deliver transparency and accountability to its citizens. The strength of Zambia’s political system lies in its diversity, its independent institutions, and its commitment to genuine political competition. These pillars of democracy cannot be sacrificed for fleeting political advantage.

Now, more than ever, Zambians must demand a political environment that respects judicial independence, values a free and impartial media, and prioritizes the integrity of the democratic process. By standing firm in defense of these principles, citizens can safeguard their democratic rights and secure a resilient political landscape for future generations. To compromise on democracy for short-term political convenience is to betray Zambia’s future—Zambians deserve better, and it is time they demand it.

About the cooler box: What is wrong with Zambians?

…Zambians would rather watch a truck than watch their stomachs that have been affected by the high cost of living….

From  Fr. Hilary Mulenga

I’ve watched with so much mesmerization how the famous cooler box has become even more popular than some of our politicians. Some of our politicians used to be greeted with pomp and splendour the way the cooler box is being greeted now.

But as of today, if we were to compare the crowds that are greeting the cooler box, many of our politicians should be getting uneasy. If the cooler box was to be on our ballot, am sure someone would have fired or appointed judges just to stop it!

First of all, it is naive to think that the cooler box will solve our problems including loadshedding and the soaring prices of essential commodities. It is naive to think that the cooler box will even solve the problem of national leadership including that of the presidency. I think at at moment we have a President who thinks so much more about himself other than what we Zambians are going through. (I am yet to recover from the shock that he can even parade young Chipo Mwanawasa just to kill off some of the perceptions that people have about his relationship with her.)

Going back to the cooler box, which for me is more popular now even if we put HH and ECL together, the nation has either lost its moral compass or has misplaced its priorities.

Zambians would rather go and celebrate the “Trojan horse” that is going to milk them of their natural resources than protest on the roads why we have longer hours of loadshedding.

Zambians would rather watch a truck than watch their stomachs that have been affected by the high cost of living. In short, Zambians would rather celebrate a machine rather than appreciate the problems that this nation has been going through and even celebrate (if at all) that the government is doing something to resolve these problems.

Where we have missed it as a nation is that we have at times failed to celebrate what can better our lives. We have rather celebrated what others will think of us. This is the same reason with the “Trojan horse” that is being transported and celebrated on our roads. For example, apart from saying it will help our Mines, have Zambians asked how it will benefit them? Have Zambians asked if it will end the incessant problems of loadshedding and high cost of living? Have Zambians asked if the same box will help our Judiciary that is now fixing people who may just be against a government position or are a threat to it? Is the cooler box going to help Zambians appreciate the prophetic role of the church that the UPND government has relegated to the gutters? Is the cooler box going to stop the widening space of lack of democratic rights and the incessant attacks on the church that especially plays a prophetic role of reminding the governemtn about it’s prerogatives?

Miss World Africa Lesego Chombo elected as a special member of parliament.

They often say politics is a dirty game. But former Miss Botswana Lesego Chombo has exchanged the life of glamour and style to become a lawmaker after being appointed as an MP in the country’s new administration.

The 26-year-old beauty queen was name as a specially elected MP as new Botswana president Duma Boko starts his presidency.

According to the Botswana government the specially elected MP is picked by leaders of political parties represented in parliament. “I believe that all of my experiences, my qualifications as an attorney, even my experience as Miss World Africa and Miss Botswana, as a young person, really make me qualify,” said an excited Chombo.

“But, most importantly, if not now, then when? I’m willing to learn and looking forward to learning and growing. This is the new Botswana that we strive fo.”

Chombo, who is an attorney, is one of six individuals nominated by Boko and endorsed by parliament for a specially elected seat. She is one of three women appointed.

She won the Miss Botswana title in 2022 and went on to be crowned Miss World Africa 2024. She is the founder of the Lesego Chombo Foundation, and is dedicated to uplifting marginalised communities.

“Beyond the courtroom, I’m dedicated to educating and empowering others. Through my online platform, “Law Talks”, I share legal insights and advice with ordinary citizens, empowering them to navigate legal complexities with confidence. My commitment to justice extends to my philanthropic endeavours as well,” she said Chombo.

In addition to her work in law and charity, Chombo made her mark on the global stage earlier this year when she represented Botswana at Miss World 2023.

Competing against 111 other candidates at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, India, she finished in the top 4 and earned the title of Miss World Africa 2024, cementing her position as one of the continent’s rising stars.

Chombo is joined in parliament by several notable individuals, including former minister of trade and industry Bogolo Kenewendo. Kenewendo, an economist, has returned to parliament for a second term as a specially elected member of parliament after previously serving between 2016 and 2018.

Other newly appointed MPs include former MP and retired Maj-Gen Pius Mokgware; Moeti Mohwasa, secretary-general of the Botswana National Front; Dr Steven Modise, a private medical practitioner; and Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, a senior lecturer at the University of Botswan

Ghana’s John Mahama projected to unseat ruling party in December election

0

Ghana’s main opposition leader and former president, John Dramani Mahama, appears to be the front-runner in the upcoming December presidential election, according to an opinion poll released on Monday. The survey, conducted by Accra-based Global InfoAnalytics, places Mahama ahead of the ruling party’s candidate, Vice President Muhamudu Bawumia.

Mahama, 65, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, is the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He leads with 52% support in the poll, while Bawumia, 60, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), trails with 41.3%. The survey, which has a 1.9% margin of error, comes as both candidates seek to convince voters ahead of the December 7 election to replace President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is concluding his second term.

The poll highlights key voter concerns around the economy, jobs, education, and infrastructure. During Mahama’s presidency, his administration invested heavily in infrastructure, though his tenure faced criticism over power shortages and economic instability, along with allegations of corruption. However, Mahama himself was never directly implicated.

Bawumia, an economist and former central banker, is running on the NPP platform. Ghana’s economic struggles, including a default on the nation’s $30 billion external debt in 2022, have weighed heavily on the ruling party. President Akufo-Addo’s administration secured a $3 billion International Monetary Fund bailout in 2023, aiming to stabilize the country’s finances amid what has been the worst economic crisis in a generation.

Political analysts predict a tight race between Mahama and Bawumia. Despite the NDC’s historic strength in northern Ghana, Bawumia’s background and ties to the region have helped the NPP gain ground. According to University of Ghana political analyst Alidu Seidu, the close contest could result in a run-off vote, as Ghana’s democratic history has never seen any party win more than two consecutive terms.

Economic performance has become a key campaign issue, with both candidates proposing plans to tackle challenges and improve livelihoods. The Economist Intelligence Unit and Fitch Solutions both forecast an NDC victory in October, citing economic pressures under the NPP’s tenure as a deciding factor.

Ghanaians will head to the polls on December 7, with Mahama and Bawumia vying to lead Africa’s second-largest cocoa producer through a challenging economic period.

Ruben Amorim to decide fate of Ruud van Nistelrooy today

0

New Manchester United manager , Ruben Amorim has confirmed that he’ll hold talks with Ruud van Nistelrooy over the Dutchman’s future at the club on Monday, November 11.

Amorim, 39, has officially left Sporting Lisbon to take the reins at Old Trafford following the sacking of Erik ten Hag last month. His first major decision will be to decide the future of ex-United striker Van Nistelrooy, who returned to the club as an assistant coach under Ten Hag in July.

The Dutchman, who scored 150 goals in five years for the Red Devils before leaving in 2006, was appointed caretaker manager following Ten Hag’s dismissal, winning three of his four games and drawing the other. Popular with players and the club’s fans, Van Nistelrooy has gone on record to state that he wants to remain at United, who he one-day wants to manage permanently.

But Amorim wants to bring his own coaches with him from Sporting, so Van Nistelrooy’s role has been plunged into jeopardy. After his final game in charge of Sporting on Sunday, an epic 4-2 comeback win against his former club, Braga, Amorim was asked about the situation and revealed that the pair are due to hold talks once he lands in Manchester.

“A legend of the club. He did a great job,” the Portuguese said. “I have to talk with him tomorrow. Then I will explain everything. I am very clear and I will tell you like it is. Let’s wait until tomorrow.”

Earlier on Sunday, Van Nistelrooy told BBC Sport after guiding United to a 3-0 victory over Leicester City: “I really enjoyed [being caretaker], it’s been a short but amazing period. We are in an uncertain position but we tried to do our jobs and help the club which is important.

“There are a lot of feelings there, the way the fans supported me and the team always in difficult moments it was a special moment. To close down this block of games with good results and a good connection I can’t thank them enough. We will learn what the further plan is now.”

North Korean troops are reportedly watching adult content after enjoying free internet for first time since deployment to Russia to fight Ukraine

0

A shocking report by Financial Times columnist Gideon Rachman has revealed that Kim Jong Un’s troops were watching adult content in their barracks having never enjoyed such unrestricted access to the web.

Up to 10,000 of Pyongyang’s troops are thought to be on the brink of entering the Ukraine conflict with some having already made their way to the Kursk border region, US intelligence has suggested.

Though full Internet access is available for high-level officials and military figures in North Korea, the majority of citizens are only granted access to Kwangmyong or ‘the bright star’ network.

This is North Korea’s only sanctioned web service and is a heavily firewalled and restricted version of the Internet which does not permit access to any foreign websites, media or news services and is instead replete with state propaganda.

Responding to the report, the Pentagon says they are unable to verify whether North Korean troops are ‘gorging themselves on porn’ .

The US Department of Defense spokesperson Major Charlie Dietz said he was unable to verify ‘any North Korean internet habits or virtual ”extracurriculars” in Russia’.

He added that the Pentagon is only concerned with the ‘more serious’ aspects of the North Korean military’s relationship with Russia.

‘As for internet access, that’s a question best directed to Moscow,’ Dietz said.

‘Right now, our attention remains on supporting Ukraine and addressing the more significant regional security concerns,’ he concluded.

Ukrainian officials declared earlier this week that Kyiv’s forces had clashed with North Korean troops for the first time as Kim Jong Un’s soldiers fought alongside their Russian counterparts to repel Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region.

In an interview with South Korean broadcaster KBS, Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov reported his troops had engaged a ‘small group’ of North Korean soldiers just across the Russian border.

His claims were backed up by US officials who confirmed to Reuters that North Korean troops were actively involved in combat in Russia’s Kursk region on November 4.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the lack of Western response to North Korea’s involvement, remarking that these ‘first battles with North Korea open a new chapter of instability in the world.’

Haiti’s prime minister ousted after six months

0

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has been fired by the country’s ruling council less than six months after he took office.

An executive order, signed by eight of the council’s nine members, named businessman and former Haiti Senate candidate Alix Didier Fils-Aime as Conille’s replacement.

Conille, a former United Nations official, was brought in to lead Haiti through an ongoing, gang-led security crisis and had been expected to help pave the way for the country’s first presidential elections since 2016.

He described his ousting as illegal, saying in a letter – seen by Reuters news agency – that it raised “serious concerns” about Haiti’s future.

Haiti currently has neither a president nor parliament and, according to its constitution, only the latter can sack a sitting prime minister.

Conille was sworn in on 3 June.

“This resolution, taken outside any legal and constitutional framework, raises serious concerns about its legitimacy,” Conille’s letter was quoted as saying.

Haiti’s transitional presidential council (TPC) was created in April after Ariel Henry, Conille’s predecessor, was forced from office by a network of gangs that had taken over parts of the capital Port-au-Prince.

Henry left Haiti to attend a summit in Guyana on 25 February 2024 and gang members subsequently seized the city’s international airport, preventing him from returning.

The TPC was tasked with restoring democratic order to the Caribbean country, where such violence is rife.

More than 3,600 people have been killed in Haiti since January and more than 500,000 have had to leave their homes, according to the UN, which describes Haiti as being one of the poorest countries in the world.

Two million Haitians currently face emergency levels of hunger, UN data shows, while almost half the population “do not have enough to eat”.

One of the country’s most powerful gang leaders, Jimmy Chérizier, also known as Barbecue, previously said he would be prepared to end the violence if armed groups were allowed to be involved in talks to establish a new government.

Presidential elections were last held in Haiti eight years ago, when Jovenel Moïse of the Tèt Kale party was elected.

Since his murder in July 2021, the post of president has been vacant.

Gangs in Haiti have capitalised on the power vacuum and expanded their control over swathes of the country, which has effectively been rendered lawless in places.

Last month, it was reported that hundreds of police officers had been deployed to Haiti from Kenya, with more set to join them in November.

Edgar Lungu: The Accidental President Who Seduced Zambia

Edgar Lungu: The Accidental President Who Seduced Zambia.

By Linda Banks

SUSSEX, Nov 10-This article is not about assessing Edgar Lungu’s leadership qualities or his tenure as President of Zambia. Those discussions can wait another day. Instead, I want to zero in on the aspects of Lungu’s personality that have made him a memorable figure in Zambian politics that some citizens want him back. Beyond his political decisions, Edgar Lungu has a set of unique and positive attributes that, love him or hate him, has left a lasting impression on Zambia. From his love of dancing to his habit of casually stopping at markets or streets to greet people, he demonstrated a level of openness that few leaders achieve.

One of Lungu’s most memorable qualities was his genuine love for connecting with people. Known for his dance moves, he often joined in local celebrations and public events, showcasing a lighthearted side that made him relatable. This personal touch made him incredibly popular and accessible, allowing citizens to see him not just as a distant figure of authority, but as one of their own. His impromptu stops at markets and street corners to greet citizens reflected his respect for everyday people and his desire to stay grounded.

In this way, Lungu’s approach mirrors that of several other world leaders who embraced a similar, accessible persona. For instance, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was known for his informal, sometimes unconventional style, often breaking away from the typical rigidity of British politics. Johnson’s approachability shone through in moments such as his playful interaction during a diplomatic trip to Japan in 2015, when he joined a rugby match with children and famously tackled a young boy. This mix of charm and humor helped Johnson connect with the public in a relatable way, making him appear approachable despite the formal nature of his office.

Similarly, former U.S. President Barack Obama frequently demonstrated his relatability through his interactions with citizens. Obama was known for stopping at local diners, cafes, and casual eateries, where he would take time to speak with everyday Americans. In one notable instance, he surprised customers by visiting a barbecue restaurant in Texas, where he casually ordered food and even joked with a man who challenged him to arm wrestle for the meal. This warmth and ease with people helped make Obama one of the most personally popular U.S. presidents, as citizens saw him as someone who genuinely enjoyed being among them.

In addition, former and current U.S. President elect (Donald Trump) used a similar approach to connect directly with his base. Known for his populist style, Trump frequently conducted rallies with a conversational tone, addressing crowds in a way that felt personal and unscripted. His impromptu visits to local diners and fast-food chains reinforced his image as a man of the people. A memorable example came in 2023, when Trump made a highly publicized stop at a McDonald’s in East Palestine, Ohio. By mingling with locals and ordering fast food, Trump was able to reinforce his bond with supporters, portraying himself as “one of the people.”

Like Johnson, Obama, and Trump, Edgar Lungu’s approachable style resonated deeply with Zambian citizens. His love for dancing and his habit of stopping to greet people on the street or in markets showcased a humility that set him apart. While his leadership might be a topic for future analysis, Lungu’s accessible persona undoubtedly made him a beloved figure in Zambia, as he embodied a leader who was both relatable and genuinely interested in connecting with his people.

Lungu also seemed to be a bit of a fashion icon, but apart from that,Lungu has a distinct wit that has both surprised and entertained Zambians. A recent example of this came when the incumbent president criticized his behavior as “silly and infantile.” Rather than taking offense, Lungu responded by singing the popular song Nalitumpa Ine (“Yes, I was foolish”), showing a self-deprecating humor that softened the tension. This moment showed a level of resilience and charm that not every politician possesses.

Lungu has also been known for his loyalty to those who supported him. Throughout his time in office, he treated his allies well, rewarding those who stood by him even in challenging times. Bowman Lusambo, Innocent Kalimanshi, and other former ministers and cadres are prime examples of individuals who benefitted from Lungu’s loyalty. He gave them opportunities and influence, building a network of supporters who were fiercely loyal to him.

Yet, it’s worth noting that Lungu’s loyalty was not always reciprocated. Some individuals who once received his favor, like Miles Sampa and even the former Australian Ambassador to Zambia, eventually distanced themselves or turned their backs on him after he left office. Nevertheless, Lungu’s dedication to his circle of allies is a testament to his commitment and loyalty, qualities that are rare in the competitive world of politics.

It’s therefore crucial for a leader’s minders to remember the importance of keeping their principal accessible to his base, media personalities and journalists who helped elevate them to office. These voices hold significant influence, as the saying goes, “the pen is mightier than the sword.” When election time comes around, the support and goodwill of these media allies can be invaluable, and leaders who remain connected to them are often better positioned to win the public’s trust and favor.

In summary, Edgar Lungu brought more than political decisions to the Zambian landscape. He was a stylish, witty, and loyal figure whose personality traits made him a unique leader. Regardless of how history may judge his presidency, these attributes will remain a part of his legacy.

There is no comeback because the wounds were too much, Sinda CCJP tells PF

There is no comeback because the wounds were too much, Sinda CCJP tells PF

By Richard Luo in Sinda

SINDA Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) coordinator Bodmass Banda says what happened in America to reelect former president Donald Trump might not happen in Zambia because of the wounds the PF under Edgar Lungu left.

In interview, Banda congratulated the American President-elect and believed the good relations between the two countries will continue.

“We expect a continuation of good relations with Zambia because change of leadership shouldn’t sour the relationship of the two countries. When you leave office peacefully without leaving problems there could be no problem of people bringing you back, but if there are a lot of things, it becomes very difficult,” he said. “Maybe it can happen but the way we see, there is no comeback because the wounds were too much, but now peace has been restored under the current regime. The first term of PF things were okay but second term people suffered. And I don’t think anybody can decide to go back where we came from at this time. If we think in that way, then we don’t think properly.”

He explained that under PF one could see youths taking liquor in bus stations, government offices were only for those aligned to the party of that.

Banda said the UPND cannot do everything right but that what they should do is to focus on what they planned to do for the people.

“They can’t do everything right. My advice to UPND is that they should not lose their focus, they should go ahead in the plan they had planned to rule the country. We know there is hunger but government has introduced this programme called cash for work so that after one is given ka something they are able to choose what to buy for them to eat as a family. But in those years mealie meal was going to the homes of district commissioners, members of parliament; and if the DC is from Lundazi mealie meal could go to his parents and relatives. But this time around money is given to the people to buy what they want,” said Banda. “One can buy from FRA or buy mealie meal from the shops or if not, one can buy potatoes because this time around we choose what to eat compared to that time under the previous regime.”

WHAT’S AHEAD ISN’T ALL ROSY – LUBINDA

WHAT’S AHEAD ISN’T ALL ROSY – LUBINDA

By Fanny Kalonda (The Mast)

ALL of us should be in bombasa (briefs) because what is ahead is not all rosy, warns PF vice-president Given Lubinda.

Lubinda has called on members of the Tonse Alliance to start campaigning at funerals, parties, markets and wherever there is an opportunity to do so.

He said former president Edgar Lungu knows what it means to lose an election.

“Edgar Chagwa Lungu knows what it means to lose elections and he has utilised this period and he is still utilising this period to sharpen his skills so that after 2026 the leadership he will provide for the people of Zambia will be much much better than what he provided in 2016,” Lubinda said on Thursday after Lungu accepted to be Tonse Alliance 2026 presidential candidate. “Now let us make sure that we use all available platforms to campaign. Go and campaign at funerals. Go and campaign at parties. Campaign on social media. Campaign on the bus, Campaign in the market. Campaign wherever you have the opportunity to campaign. Our lawyers, time has come for you to rededicate yourselves to the liberation of Zambia – the third liberation.”

He argued that there is no one who can be compared to Lungu.

“Time has come for us, for you to come and give the Zambian people a good government. You have to be willing to sacrifice. This is not a closed shop. This is an open shop. Let every party, every organisation that comes and says I share your ideas, let them come. If they don’t share our ideals it is our duty to show them our ideals so that they believe in what we believe in so that in 2026 we want stand up and truly say that tilitonse (we are together),” he said.

Lubinda explained that after 1964, the second liberation was in 1991.

“President Edgar Chagwa Lungu was sixth republican president. Whoever comes after him cannot be better than him. Because whatever he did is what you are building on. Lessons learnt from Botswana. When the time for reckoning came, even before the last person voted, Donald Trump was miles ahead. This is a lesson to you. Don’t listen to propaganda, instead listen to the people. I hope that every President today is learning from these people that after you lose, you concede. Prepare yourself for two eventualities when going for a race. Either you win or you lose. And I hope [President] Hakainde [Hichilema] is hearing me. Prepare yourself for either to win or as I think you will lose, prepare yourself so that when that time comes you concede with dignity not with tears. But there are also lessons to be learned,” he said. “You have no one to compare Edgar Chagwa Lungu to. No one. Because the only ones you could have compared him to are long gone. Now he’s alone. The only truly experienced person and the fact that he did accept defeat, to be vanquished, means that he is coming up even stronger.”

Lubinda said what was seen in the US is “exactly what is being” witnessed in Zambia “where one person thinks that they know it all”.

“And now the people in America are learning our song, alebwelelapo, alebwelelapo pamupando (he’s coming back to power).

The second lesson to be learnt is that to win an election is not to be elevated above humanity. That because you have won an election and therefore you are better than everybody else, no. To win an election calls for humility. But what we have seen in Botswana, what we saw in the United States of America, is exactly what we are seeing in Zambia where the person who has been elected thinks he knows it all. He’s the advisor to himself and also advisor to his advisors,” Lubinda said. “Third lesson to be learnt from … and from Trump, is that persecution in politics is not a deterrent, no. Persecution in politics is not a deterrent instead it must be an incentive. Why is it that [Raphael] Nakacinda has to go to court every day? Why is it that president Edgar Lungu and his family must be in court everyday? Why is it that Sean [Tembo] every time he speaks, he must be arrested? No one throws stones at a barren tree. In politics, persecution must be an incentive. If you are useless nobody will persecute you. And after all it is said, fire makes diamonds. So all of you my friends who are being persecuted count it a blessing. And Hakainde, please arrest us even more. We want the people to know that we are being purified for challenges ahead of us.”

And Lubinda called on US President-elect Donald Trump to stop the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“…and now because [US President Joe] Biden said those words after we lost elections, what words should I use to him today? My message to Biden is that the Americans have removed a rogue government. A rogue government of warmongers, a rogue government which supports homosexuality. A rogue government which has promoted … in the world by telling Africans not to cooperate with whichever country they want to cooperate with. The Americans have decided to vote for a person who shall respect people because he did it before. Remember, I said you test people by what they have been. They have now voted for a man when he was president of the USA he showed that he was not going to interfere in other countries’ business. So welcome Donald Trump, and in welcoming you Donald Trump, I have a request on behalf of the Zambian people and on behalf of Africans. Number one, do away with your executive order imposing LGBTQI rights on African states. Cooperate with us on equal terms. Let us keep our values and beliefs and keep yours. Let us treat each other as equals,” said Lubinda. “Number two, Donald Trump please do away with your …Act against Russia and against China. Number three, Donald Trump use your influence to stop the wars in the world. Stop the Russia-Ukraine war because you know that that is sponsored in White House. Stop the war between Israel and the Middle East. And also Donald Trump, I pray, come and remove your AFRICOM from Zambia.”
