Mnangagwa, before talking about colonial reparations, why not pay Gukurahundi reparations first?

0

In a recent address at State House, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa renewed his call for former colonial powers to pay reparations to their ex-colonies, suggesting that such reparations could help fund Zimbabwe’s efforts to compensate white commercial farmers whose lands were seized during the early 2000s land reform program.

The call, however, raises critical questions about the president’s priorities and the selective way he frames Zimbabwe’s historical grievances.

The appeal for colonial reparations can indeed strike a sympathetic chord, as few would deny the violence, exploitation, and trauma of colonial rule.

Yet Mnangagwa’s stance presents a significant contradiction.

His administration demands reparations from external powers while neglecting accountability for equally traumatic events within Zimbabwe itself-namely, the Gukurahundi massacres of the early 1980s, in which over 20,000 Ndebele-speaking Zimbabweans were killed by government forces.

For true justice to prevail, Mnangagwa must prioritize reparations for Gukurahundi victims before seeking reparations from former colonial rulers.

This article explores why domestic accountability is essential for meaningful justice and critiques the inconsistencies and hypocrisy of Mnangagwa’s recent statements.

Examining Mnangagwa’s Call for Colonial Reparations

At face value, Mnangagwa’s appeal for reparations from former colonial rulers seems straightforward, reflecting a common sentiment across Africa.

He argues that these reparations would address past wrongs, support Zimbabwe’s economy, and aid the government in compensating dispossessed white farmers whose lands were seized during land reforms.

Yet, behind the rhetoric lies a troubling inconsistency.

Mnangagwa’s government continues to sidestep accountability for Gukurahundi, a tragedy that occurred under his direct political watch as the State Security Minister.

Why does Mnangagwa prioritize colonial grievances while refusing to compensate his own citizens for Gukurahundi?

Why is he more concerned with securing reparations to address harms inflicted generations ago, while ignoring the more recent suffering of the Ndebele-speaking community?

By avoiding an apology or reparations for Gukurahundi, Mnangagwa reveals a selective concern for justice, one that seeks legitimacy abroad while neglecting the demands of those at home.

Revisiting Key Points on Colonial Reparations

While colonialism left lasting scars on Zimbabwe, it is critical to examine the broader context in which calls for reparations are made.

Reparation demands can overlook complex historical truths, especially regarding how power dynamics operated globally—including in Europe and Africa.

Historical Context of Reparations

The experience of colonization is not unique to African nations.

European countries, too, have histories of conquest and occupation.

For example, Ireland endured British rule for centuries, resulting in significant cultural, economic, and political suppression.

Poland was partitioned and controlled by surrounding empires, and Hungary faced the same under the Ottoman Empire.

Even Britain itself was once under Roman rule, an occupation that left lasting imprints on its society and landscape.

Yet, despite these experiences, none of these European nations have demanded reparations for these historical occupations.

They chose, instead, to focus on self-reconstruction and progress—a path that Mnangagwa’s administration could consider, rather than depending on reparations as the primary means for addressing past grievances.

African Kingdoms and Colonial Occupation

African kingdoms were also involved in expansionist practices, employing similar strategies of territorial conquest and control seen in European colonialism.

The Mutapa, Rozvi, Ndebele, and Zulu empires became powerful precisely because they engaged in their own forms of colonialism, expanding through invasions of smaller, weaker states.

These kingdoms’ histories reveal that African imperial power dynamics were complex and multifaceted, making it difficult to separate “colonizers” from “colonized” in simple terms.

Moreover, the Mutapa Kingdom, under its Munhumutapa kings, was involved in the transatlantic slave trade as early as the 16th century, capturing and selling people to Portuguese traders.

This history illustrates that indigenous African powers also engaged in forms of exploitation and human trafficking, blurring the lines between oppressor and oppressed.

By highlighting these nuances, it becomes apparent that reparations, while symbolically valuable, should not be sought under a one-sided or idealized vision of African history.

Britain’s Withdrawal of Land Reform Funding

Mnangagwa’s assertion that reparations from colonial powers would enable Zimbabwe to compensate white farmers glosses over the fact that Zimbabwe had once received financial commitments for land reform under the Lancaster House Agreement.

Initially, Britain had agreed to fund Zimbabwe’s land redistribution through a “willing buyer, willing seller” framework, but this commitment faltered after reports of financial mismanagement.

In a pivotal 1997 letter to Zimbabwe’s then Agriculture Minister, Kumbirai Kangai, UK Development Secretary Claire Short cited misuse of funds and lack of transparency as Britain’s reasons for ceasing land reform funding.

Short’s letter indicated that the money meant for equitable land redistribution for the benefit of poor black farmers often ended up in the hands of senior government officials, military commanders, and business elites who were close to Robert Mugabe’s government.

This led to widespread disillusionment among ordinary Zimbabweans, many of whom had supported the independence struggle in the hope that they would finally gain access to land.

Britain, through its Department for International Development (DFID), contributed tens of millions of pounds to support land reform from 1980 to the mid-1990s.

However, reports of elite capture and diversion of funds began to surface, suggesting that large portions of these funds were not reaching the intended beneficiaries.

According to some estimates, of the £44 million that Britain initially set aside for land reform under the “willing buyer, willing seller” model, only a fraction was actually used to purchase land for the landless poor.

The remainder was allegedly diverted for supposed “administrative costs” and other purposes unrelated to land redistribution.

Throughout the 1990s, it became evident that land reform was being captured by political elites rather than benefiting the intended rural poor.

A 1994 government audit found that 5 million hectares of land purchased with British funds for redistribution ended up in the hands of senior politicians, government ministers, military officers, and their families.

By failing to acknowledge this part of the narrative, Mnangagwa’s call for reparations lacks accountability for Zimbabwe’s internal missteps and frames colonial reparations as a panacea for current government failures.

Contradictions in Reparations for White Farmers

The proposal to use reparations to compensate white farmers dispossessed during land reforms presents an internal contradiction within Zimbabwe’s official narrative.

The land reform program was publicly justified as an effort to correct historical injustices, redistributing land from white settlers to black Zimbabweans.

Yet, by positioning colonial reparations as a means to compensate these same farmers, Mnangagwa undermines the ideological foundation of the land reform movement.

If the goal of land reform was to redress colonial wrongs, why does the government now seek reparations to compensate those who previously benefitted from colonialism?

Mnangagwa’s proposal reflects a lack of coherence in policy, revealing a willingness to use the colonial reparation narrative to serve whichever political ends suit his administration.

This paradox suggests that the call for reparations is less about genuine justice and more about political maneuvering.

The Gukurahundi Massacres: The Unaddressed Wound

Between 1983 and 1987, the Gukurahundi massacres resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 Ndebele-speaking Zimbabweans.

The massacres, perpetrated by the Fifth Brigade, were state-sanctioned atrocities that targeted civilians in a systematic campaign of terror.

To this day, the Zimbabwean government has not issued a formal apology or offered reparations to the survivors or families of the victims.

Lack of Accountability

Mnangagwa’s silence on Gukurahundi is deafening, particularly as he now calls for reparations for colonial injustices.

His reluctance to address Gukurahundi reveals a profound moral inconsistency, suggesting that only certain historical grievances are worthy of redress.

While Zimbabweans are asked to look to foreign powers for reparations, the government refuses to acknowledge or compensate its own citizens for state-led atrocities.

This selective pursuit of justice is an affront to the families and survivors of Gukurahundi, who continue to seek recognition and reparation for their suffering.

The Moral Hypocrisy

Mnangagwa’s call for colonial reparations, juxtaposed with his silence on Gukurahundi, exposes a hypocrisy at the heart of his administration.

It is unconscionable to demand justice for harms inflicted by foreign powers while refusing to address equally severe harms committed by one’s own government.

True justice begins at home, and until Zimbabwe’s leadership acknowledges and atones for Gukurahundi, calls for colonial reparations will lack credibility.

The Path Forward: Prioritizing Justice at Home

Before Zimbabwe can credibly demand reparations from former colonial powers, it must demonstrate a commitment to addressing its own injustices.

Compensating Gukurahundi survivors and issuing a formal apology would signal a genuine dedication to justice, setting an example of internal accountability that would strengthen Zimbabwe’s case for external reparations.

Reconciliation and Healing

By addressing Gukurahundi, Zimbabwe could begin to heal from its own historical wounds, fostering a culture of reconciliation and transparency.

This process would benefit not only Gukurahundi survivors but all Zimbabweans, building a stronger, more unified society that values justice as a foundational principle.

Conclusion

President Mnangagwa’s call for colonial reparations is, on the surface, a powerful demand for historical justice.

Yet, without addressing domestic injustices like Gukurahundi, this demand lacks authenticity.

Justice can not be a selective endeavor, confined to grievances against foreign powers while ignoring those harmed by one’s own government.

If Mnangagwa is sincere about reparations, he should begin with Gukurahundi, prioritizing the reparations owed to Zimbabweans before seeking redress from former colonial powers.

Only by addressing these internal injustices can Zimbabwe present a united and credible front in the pursuit of historical justice on the international stage.

Arsenal supporter k!lls Manchester United fan for celebrating Salah’s late equalizer against Arsenal

Police in Uganda are hunting for an Arsenal football fan after he allegedly assaulted a Manchester United fan, leading to his death.

The sad incident occurred on Sunday, October 27, at Kyobugombe Trading Centre in Kaharo Sub County of Kabale district after Arsenal was held to 2 – 2 by Liverpool.

According to TV47.digital, when Liverpool’s Mo Salah scored a late goal against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Manchester United supporter Benjamin Okello burst into celebration. He threw popcorn at the Arsenal as he celebrated.

This escalated into an argument, and after the match ended, the two got into a scuffle and the Arsenal fan hit Benjamin Okello with a stick. leading to his death.

Confirming the incident, the Kaharo Sub County Chairperson narrated, “I received information. Yesterday morning (Monday), two men fought on Sunday night in Kyobugombe trading centre, and one of them was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre for treatment and was referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he died.”

“A scuffle started in a video hall at the Kyobugombe trading centre, where they were watching a football match between Arsenal and Liverpool. When Liverpool scored an equaliser in the 81st minute, the Manchester United fan, now deceased, started jubilating, and this angered the Arsenal fan. He (the Manchester United fan) threw popcorn at the Arsenal fan, sparking an argument between the two. After the game, the Arsenal fan picked a stick and hit the Manchester United fan, causing him to fall down,” he added.

The suspect, only identified as Onan, is said to be a notorious criminal who has been terrorizing the residents of Kaharo Sub County.

A manhunt has been launched by the police in Kabale District for the Arsenal fan who is on the run.

The district police commander (DPC), Mr. Joseph Bakaleke, said, “We got information indicating that the two boys who were supporters of two different teams had a scuffle, and in so doing, one assaulted the other. It is alleged that when the assaulted one was taken to the hospital later alone, he met his death.”

Zanu-PF wants to rename Zimbabwe’s provinces

0

The ruling Zanu-PF party has called for the renaming of Zimbabwe’s provinces, aiming to eliminate colonial-era names that have historically fueled division among the population. This resolution emerged from the party’s 21st Annual National People’s Conference, which concluded in Bulawayo on Saturday.

Zanu-PF officials expect that the decisions made during the conference will be swiftly implemented by various government departments and agencies. In a strategic move to ensure alignment with government planning, the party has scheduled its conference prior to the announcement of the national budget for the upcoming year.

Under the theme “Industrialise and Modernise Towards the Attainment of Vision 2030,” the conference sought to bolster the national development agenda laid out by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Presenting the resolutions, Zanu-PF Secretary for Legal Affairs Patrick Chinamasa emphasized the need to enhance national unity through the renaming initiative.

“On liberation war heritage, the party directs the Government to accelerate the renaming of provinces and do away with colonial names, which divide the nation,” stated Chinamasa.

Historians and cultural commentators have praised this resolution as a long-overdue step toward healing the nation’s historical wounds. Mr. Methembe Hadebe, a prominent historian, remarked, “The naming of the provinces was part of the colonialists’ divide and rule tactics. Changing the names of the provinces will foster national pride and promote a sense of belonging among Zimbabweans.”

He added that renaming the provinces should be complemented by a comprehensive review of the national educational curriculum to rectify historical misconceptions.

Colonial authorities named provinces along ethnic lines, with the southern regions designated as Matabeleland, primarily populated by Ndebele-speaking individuals, while the northern regions were referred to as Mashonaland, reflecting the dominance of Shona ethnic groups. The eastern part of the country was named Manicaland, derived from the Manyika people. Mr. Hadebe emphasized that this colonial naming practice contradicted the spirit of national unity.

In addition to the renaming initiative, Chinamasa highlighted the need for the government to refurbish and maintain all national heroes’ shrines across provinces and districts as a means to honor the country’s liberation struggle. He urged the government to expedite the vetting of outstanding war veterans and ensure timely gratuity payments.

“The party directs the Government to prioritize the disbursement of resources for exhumations and re-burials of veterans of the liberation struggle,” Chinamasa said, also advocating for protections for veterans against land evictions and local authority developments that might affect them.

Furthermore, the party has proposed the establishment of provincial museums dedicated to preserving the memories of the liberation struggle and the erection of statues honoring national heroes throughout the provinces.

Zanu-PF has also reaffirmed its commitment to engaging the British government to fulfill its promise of financial compensation to former white commercial farmers, even as the Zimbabwean government has committed to pay US$3.5 billion for improvements made on farms under the Global Compensation Deed.

As Zimbabwe continues to navigate its post-colonial identity, the resolutions from the Zanu-PF conference signal a significant move toward embracing national unity and heritage while addressing the remnants of colonial influence in the country.

YOUNG THUG RELEASED FROM JAIL AFTER GUILTY PLEA ON GANG CHARGES

YOUNG THUG RELEASED FROM JAIL AFTER GUILTY PLEA ON GANG CHARGES

US rapper Young Thug was released from jail Thursday evening after pleading guilty to gang, drug and gun charges, in a dramatic twist that ended the longest criminal trial in Georgia history.

The 33-year-old Grammy winner, born Jeffery Lamar Williams, has spent more than 900 days behind bars since his arrest on racketeering and gang-related charges.

In May 2022, prosecutors alleged the rap label he founded was a front for an organised crime syndicate responsible for “75 to 80% of violent crime” in Atlanta.

He was sentenced on Thursday to time served and 15 years of probation, and jail records show he was released later that night.

“I take full responsibility for my crimes, for my charges,” Mr Williams told the court.

“To really everybody that has got something to do with this situation, I want to say sorry.”

In a five-minute speech, he described himself as “a good guy with a good heart” who found himself “in a lot of stuff because I was just nice or cool”.

“And I understand that you can’t be that way when you reach a certain height because it could end bad… and it could fall on you.”

Prosecutors had planned to recommend a sentence of 45 years, including 25 in custody and 20 on probation.

But the plea negotiations were unsuccessful, and Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker instead chose his punishment, commuting his sentence to the time he has already served, paving the way for his release.

“I want you to try to be more of the solution and less of the problem,” Judge Whitaker told him.

As part of the deal, Mr Williams pleaded guilty to one gang charge, three drug charges and two-gun charges.

He also entered a no-contest plea to leading a gang and violating the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (Rico) Act, meaning that he decided not to contest those charges and accepts punishment for them.

Judge Whitaker additionally stipulated 100 hours of community service, a ban on contact with gang members or former co-defendants, and a prohibition from remaining in the metropolitan Atlanta area for the first 10 years of his 15-year probation period except under special circumstances – including weddings, funerals and the anti-gang and anti-gun presentations he is required to host four times a year.

Thursday’s change of plea brings an end to a multi-defendant case that was plagued by multiple delays, courtroom disturbances and motions for mistrial.

When the man known to his fans as “Thugger” was arrested in May 2022, prosecutors charged him and 27 associates at his rap label – Young Stoner Life (YSL) Records – with conspiracy to violate the Rico Act, famously used in mafia prosecutions.

Arguing that YSL in fact stands for a criminal gang called Young Slime Life, they tied the men – including fellow rap superstar Gunna – to a series of felony offences, including murder, armed robbery and carjacking in the streets of Atlanta. [BBC News]

Arnold Schwarzenegger slams Trump, endorses Harris

Former Republican governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger took to social media on Wednesday to announce he would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. The 77-year-old legendary actor, who served as governor from 2003 to 2011, also condemned Donald Trump and explained why the Republican presidential candidate was not fit for the job.

Schwarzenegger started his lengthy post on X by saying that though he doesn’t “really do endorsements,” he’s “not shy” about sharing his views. “But I hate politics and don’t trust most politicians,” he stated. “I also understand that people want to hear from me because I am not just a celebrity, I am a former Republican Governor.”

The Terminator actor then touched on his time as governor and how his tenure taught him to “love policy and ignore politics.” “I’m proud of the work I did to help clean up our air, create jobs, balance the budget, make the biggest infrastructure investment in state history, and take power from the politicians and give it back to the people when it comes to our redistricting process and our primaries in California,” he wrote.

“That’s policy. It requires working with the other side, not insulting them to win your next election, and I know it isn’t sexy to most people, but I love it when I can help make people’s lives better with policies, like I still do through my institute at USC, where we fight for clean air and stripping the power from the politicians who rig the system against the people.”

Schwarzenegger also made it clear that he’s not a fan of the country’s two biggest parties at the moment, explaining that Republicans have “forgotten the beauty of the free market, driven up deficits, and rejected election results” while Democrats “aren’t any better at dealing with deficits, and I worry about their local policies hurting our cities with increased crime.”

The 77-year-old added: “It is probably not a surprise that I hate politics more than ever, which, if you are a normal person who isn’t addicted to this crap, you probably understand. I want to tune out. But I can’t.”

The former governor then condemned Trump’s actions after he lost the 2020 presidential election. “Rejecting the results of an election is as un-American as it gets,” he stated. “To someone like me who talks to people all over the world and still knows America is the shining city on a hill, calling America is a trash can for the world is so unpatriotic, it makes me furious.”

“And I will always be an American before I am a Republican,” he continued. “That’s why, this week, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.”

Schwarzenegger said that though others also share his sentiments about the current “problems” in the country, voting for Trump would exacerbate things.

“A candidate who won’t respect your vote unless it is for him, a candidate who will send his followers to storm the Capitol while he watches with a Diet Coke, a candidate who has shown no ability to work to pass any policy besides a tax cut that helped his donors and other rich people like me but helped no one else, a candidate who thinks Americans who disagree with him are the bigger enemies than China, Russia, or North Korea – that won’t solve our problems,” he explained.

“It will just be four more years of bullshit with no results that makes us angrier and angrier, more divided, and more hateful,” he added.

“We need to close the door on this chapter of American history, and I know that former President Trump won’t do that. He will divide, he will insult, he will find new ways to be more un-American than he already has been, and we, the people, will get nothing but more anger.

“That’s enough reason for me to share my vote with all of you. I want to move forward as a country, and even though I have plenty of disagreements with their platform, I think the only way to do that is with Harris and Walz. Vote this week. Turn the page and put this junk behind us.”

In September, Face2Face Africa reported that over 100 former Republican officials in a letter had similarly endorsed Harris and explained that Trump was “unfit to serve again as President, or indeed in any office of public trust.”

Per CNBC, the letter was shared by the Harris campaign, and it was signed by 111 former Republican officials. They included former national security and foreign policy officials who served in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and/or Donald Trump, or as Republican Members of Congress.

Kelly Khumalo’s sister claims killers were after her, not footballer Senzo Meyiwa

Kelly Khumalo’s sister, Zandile Khumalo, has claimed that the men who killed Senzo Meyiwa were after her sister and not the late South African footballer, while insinuating that his late widow was the one who masterminded the hit.

Meyiwa was fatally shot in the chest when two intruders allegedly entered the family home of his girlfriend, Kelly, in Vosloorus in October 2014 while he was relaxing with her and other friends.

Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are standing trial for the murder of the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana footballer.

Throughout the trial, Kelly’s name has come up numerous times, as she is accused of having had a hand in his murder.

In the Gagasi FM Fast Lane show this week, Zandie claimed that she believed that Kelly was the intended victim of a hit.

“Seeing that everyone has their theories around this matter, let me share mine. First, those guys are professional izinkabi (hitmen).

“If they were going to kill Senzo, they would have shot him the minute they walked into the house and then returned to shoot him to make sure he was dead,” she said.

She added that when Longwe Twala, who was inside the house at the time of the shooting, managed to push one of the alleged killers outside while Kelly ran into the bedroom, one of the guys followed Kelly, leaving Senzo, which proves to me that their target was Kelly, not Senzo.”

In an another interview with eNCA Zandile pointed at Meyiwa’s widow, Mandisa Mkhize as a person who might have been behind the hit.

“I’ve tried mentioning it to Brigadier Gininda, so I don’t know what he’s made out of it,” Zandie said.

Brigadier Bongani Gininda is the leading investigating officer in the Senzo murder trial.

“Who’s paying them? We all know that these people (the accused) are doing lousy jobs, some of them were dancers at some point and other miners.

“They don’t have that much capital to have these people (lawyers) representing them. Lawyers are ‘bad’, but they get paid at the end of the day. Who’s paying them?” she said.

Zandie said the other day she bumped into Senzo’s murder accused’s legal representative, Advocate Zandile Mshololo, on a flight, insinuating someone was funding his legal fight.

“Mshololo stays in Durban, and flies to Joburg every time she has to represent accused number five. Who’s paying for the hotel (accommodation)? Who’s paying for her? Plus, she has a partner. If the police must follow the money trail, maybe something will come out, I don’t know.”

South Africa plans to say goodbye to cash?

0

Despite the surging adoption of contactless payments in South Africa, more than half of the country still relies on cash as their dominant payment method, and the digital divide is slowing the migration to digital currencies.

South Africa’s major banks have noted that transactions made with digital wallets have been skyrocketing, with Capitec reporting a 238% increase in digital payment volumes between June 2023 and June 2024.

However, this is primarily attributed to upper-income segments, with high transaction fees and a lack of Internet access hindering greater adoption.

Efficient Group director and chief economist Dawie Roodt said several barriers must be overcome within the South African economy before lower-income groups join this trend.

One of these barriers is trust in financial institutions.

Roodt argued that this lack of trust stems from the country’s lowered confidence in governmental institutions and, thus, South Africa’s economic future.

He said that even PayShap, a universal payment system meant to lower the barriers for South Africans sending money to one another, has been surrounded by rumours of government surveillance and spending controls.

Roodt also pointed to the convenience of cash for certain transactions as a major contributor to its ongoing usage.

He used the example of how using Bitcoin to pay for a loaf of bread would be nonsensical because of the fees involved, whereas using cash is free.

The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) Digital Payments Roadmap also points out that cash is preferred for specific transactions, even by those who have bank accounts.

A study by the University of Pretoria and SVB Services found that 55% of South African earners use cash as a dominant payment method.

This study divided the South African public into five categories: cash-reliant, cash status, cash-functional, digital adopter, and digital migratory.

While these categories segment the population based on their reliance on cash, the study argued that there should not be an either-or approach to payment systems but rather an and-and.

This is because 96% of the population uses both cash and digital forms of payment.

The categories fall on a spectrum based on their preference for the future use of cash and digital payment methods – with cash reliant on one side and digital migrator on the other.

The first three categories, cash reliant, cash status, and cash functional – 46.6% of the population – although using both payment forms, tend towards a pro-cash future.

This is primarily due to circumstantial factors such as those mentioned by the SARB, such as low merchant adoption of digital payments, being paid in cash, or lack of smartphone or Internet access.

Additionally, digital payment options do not cater to the needs of all income segments.

When considering day-to-day payments, the appeal of using a tap-to-pay-enabled device or a bank card is convenience rather than necessity.

Therefore, digital payments will have to meet more South Africans’ needs to outweigh their lack of trust in such systems.

Lowering the costs of digital payments, which the SARB points to as a barrier to an inclusive digital economy, is another need for the lower-income population.

These costs include the transaction fees and data costs incurred by merchants and consumers.

If data is needed to facilitate payments, the relatively high cost will slow merchants’ adoption of digital payment methods.
The spectrum shows how open South Africans are to a digital future. Blue indicates a preference for using cash in the future, whereas red shows a preference for a digital economy.

The final two categories in the study are digital adopter and digital migrator, comprising 53.3% of the population.

South Africans in these categories tend towards a pro-digital payment future, although both use cash frequently – between 96% and 99%.

Those with a more optimistic outlook for a digital payment future – and higher levels of trust in these technologies – fall within the middle and upper-income segments.

This brings another variable into the mix: access to technology and South Africa’s digital divide.

Roodt said this alienation from the technologies used in South Africa’s digitally-driven economy hinders increased cash adoption.

“Once you can access a smartphone and the Internet, your world opens up. You could set up an e-commerce shop from your phone and earn in dollars,” said Roodt.

Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub agrees that lowering the cost of smartphones is the key to bridging South Africa’s digital divide and improving Internet access on the African continent.

Joosub said only 25% of the Sub-Saharan population has access to mobile Internet and that more than half of the group’s entire customer base doesn’t have a smartphone.

He says that this comes down to the cost of smartphones, as entry-level devices can consume 16% of monthly incomes in low- to middle-income countries, such as South Africa.

This can rise to 44% for the most financially vulnerable in the country.

Barack Obama opens up about the “inappropriate s3xual advances” he received while he was president

0

Former US president, Barack Obama has opened up about some of the “somewhat inappropriate” advances he received from women while he was commander in chief.

In an interview on The Pivot Podcast, Obama, 63, told podcast’s co-hosts, former NFL players Channing Crowder, Ryan Clark and Fred Taylor,

that he “was not tripping” from his admirers despite his position at the time.

“When I got drafted in the NFL, I got a little cuter,” Crowder, a former Miami Dolphins linebacker, said while opening up the discussion by sharing his own experience and also what kept him on a “straight and narrow path” throughout it.

“Do women be hollering at you and stuff, like on the fact that, because you’re a good-looking dude, but now you’re ‘President Good Looking Dude,’” he asked to laughter.

“First of all, I don’t know if Michelle’s going to be watching this,” Obama joked about his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama. He then acknowledged his experiences, which he figured hit him differently because of his age at the time.

“The truth is, you guys as NFL players and athletes generally…y’all get famous young, at a time when the attention that you’re talking about maybe flattering, fun, what have you,” he said. “By the time people really knew who I was, I was 43 years old. I was married, had two kids, had gone grocery shopping, had washed my car. I was a regular guy in that sense.”

“That kind of attention, by the time I got it, I was not tripping on it. There are times where women have acted in somewhat inappropriate ways. There are pictures on the internet of women grabbing my butt, and I was president at the time,” he said.

The Secret Service likely didn’t intervene because they were “like old ladies and stuff, so they’re not going to wrestle them down on the ground,” he added.

“My wife is such an extraordinary woman, such an amazing partner, that you just try to stay focused, stay on the straight and narrow. And also, look, kids change your life. The idea of disappointing your kids is something that, I ain’t going there.”

Barack married Michelle in 1992, and their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, were 10 and 7 when they moved into the White House following his 2008 victory. He was 47 at the time, making him one of the nation’s youngest presidents and the first Black president.

Diddy Rape Accuser Must Reveal Identity Or Drop Lawsuit, Judge Rules

0

A Diddy rape accuser has been forced to publicly reveal their identity or else their lawsuit against the Bad Boy Records founder will be dropped.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, an anonymous woman who claims Puffy sexually assaulted her 20 years ago has been told by a New York judge that she must use her real name if her lawsuit is to proceed.

Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil ruled that the anonymous woman, who filed her suit under the pseudonym of Jane Doe, has failed to prove why she needs to remain anonymous.

The woman has until November 13 to refile the lawsuit under her real identity or it will be tossed.

Diddy is accused in the lawsuit of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in 2004 after he invited her to a photoshoot near her college campus in New York.

The woman claims that under the threat of violence, the mogul forced her to undress and then sexually assaulted her.

Diddy, as with all other claims of sexual assault he has faced, denied the allegations through his lawyer, saying: “In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone — adult or minor, man or woman.”

The latest lawsuit filed against the embattled record executive accuses him of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy in 2005.

The alleged victim, who has kept their identity a secret, claims Diddy drugged and raped him in a New York City hotel during an audition for Bad Boy Records.

In his complaint, John Doe says a consultant hired by his parents took him to a hotel room where he was left alone with Combs and allegedly given a soda that he believes was laced with drugs.

The suit reads: “After plaintiff consumed his soda and began feeling its effects, Combs told plaintiff to move closer to him, which plaintiff did. Combs then abruptly pushed plaintiff down and said words to the effect of, ‘You have to do some stuff you don’t want to do sometimes.’

“Once plaintiff had pushed plaintiff down, Combs pulled his penis out of his pants and told the 10-year-old plaintiff to ‘kiss it.’ When plaintiff resisted, Combs nevertheless forced his penis into plaintiff’s mouth and proceeded to repeatedly push it in and out.”

Barack Obama reveals why he didn’t complain over Malia Obama’s decision to change her name

Barack Obama has revealed he fully supports his daughter Malia’s decision to use a stage name. Premiering her film “The Heart” at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the 26-year-old daughter of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama chose to go by Malia Ann, dropping the last name Obama and using her middle name.

According to Barack Obama, who also has a 23-year-old daughter, Sasha, this move was entirely expected.

“The challenge for us is letting us give them any help at all,” Barack Obama confessed on the October 29 episode of The Pivot Podcast. “I mean they’re very sensitive about this stuff. They’re very stubborn about it.”

Barack Obama indicated that he advised his daughter Malia that even without using her last name, people would still recognize their connection.

“I was all like, ‘You do know they’ll know who you are,’” the 63-year-old explained. “And she’s all like, ‘You know what? I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association.’ So I think our daughters go out of their way to not try to leverage that.”

The former U.S. president observed that his daughters, Malia and Sasha, have in recent times attracted increased public attention after entering adulthood and pursuing their passions.

“Now, as they’ve gotten older, there’s been some paparazzi stuff going on, and it drives them nuts,” he said, “because their attitude is, ‘We’re not looking for all that.’ So they’re grounded.”

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, now involved in Hollywood with their film company Higher Ground Productions, prioritized giving their daughters, Malia and Sasha, a semi-normal childhood, as reported by E! News.

Barack Obama admitted he was initially hesitant to run for office, fearing the impact it would have on their daughters.

He appreciated that during most of his presidency, the White House press pool focused on him, leaving Malia and Sasha alone.

“I basically made a deal with the press pool,” he explained. “I said, ‘You can follow me around. You can talk about me. You do whatever you need to do. Leave my children alone because they have the right to grow up. They didn’t choose this. Let them grow up.’ And to the credit of the press they did leave them alone.”

Now that Malia and Sasha are grown, the 44th President can’t help but be proud of what they have turned out to be — Malia’s film debut making rounds at prestigious film festivals and working with talented individuals like Donald Glover.

He expressed particular pride in how both daughters have matured, despite the challenges of growing up in the public eye.

“They’ve turned out amazing,” he said with a smile. “I can’t brag about them enough.”

Protesters face bullets for political change in Mozambique

0

Rights activist Cidia Chissungo has spent the last few days poring over images she never thought she’d see in Mozambique: Young men with bloodied bodies pockmarked with bullet wounds; teenagers with eyes swollen shut from being hit with tear gas canisters by the Mozambican police.

Chissungo, 28, who is documenting the scale of ongoing post-election violence that broke out last week, says the images of dead and injured people circulating online have caused her to lose sleep.

“There’s a 16-year-old guy who was shot in the mouth, and his mouth was completely destroyed,” Chissungo told Al Jazeera. “There’s just a hole where his mouth was. Every time I close my eyes, I have that image in my head.”

It’s just one gory example of how young Mozambicans are paying a deadly price as the country faces some of the worst violence to follow an election. Clashes first broke out last Monday after police opened fire on supporters of 50-year-old opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane. By Friday, at least 11 people had been killed, many others injured – including a policeman – and about 400 people detained, according to Human Rights Watch.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters are expected to again take to the streets in protest in Maputo, the capital, and other cities, ignoring calls by outgoing President Filipe Nyusi to stay home.

Demonstrators are angry at the results of the October 9 elections that saw the long-ruling Frelimo (Mozambique Liberation Front) party candidate Daniel Chapo sweep the polls, while Mondlane, a favourite among young people, came a distant second. The opposition alleges votes were rigged, and election observers also noted some irregularities.

The brutal killings of two of Mondlane’s close associates last Saturday have also incensed supporters. Although he ran as an independent candidate, Mondlane is backed by the extra-parliamentary group, The Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique, abbreviated as Podemos.

Calm was just returning to Maputo and other cities this week. Although evidence of the chaos was still glaring in a burned police station, looted businesses downtown, burned tyres scattered on the roads, and ripped election billboards, people went out to work on Monday.

However, on Wednesday night, in a Facebook livestream, Mondlane called for another round of protests starting Thursday. In Maputo, young people gathered in groups, watching Mondlane on their phones, and chanting “Vamos, Vamos!” – meaning “let’s go”.

Ballot stuffing and ghost voters

Many of Mozambique’s youth – who make up two-thirds of the 35 million population – saw October 9 as an opportunity to do away with Frelimo. The party has ruled the country since it wrested independence from colonial ruler Portugal in 1975 after a bloody uprising. It then fought a civil war with the opposition Renamo party (Mozambican National Resistance) between 1977 and 1992.

However, young Mozambicans say Frelimo’s reputation as a liberation party makes no impression on them, and its legacy is now deeply buried under years of economic decline, corruption, high levels of unemployment, and an armed conflict in the north, despite the country’s touristic beauty and abundant gas reserves.

“Many young people feel there is no hope,” activist Chissungo said. “We still have kids sitting under trees to study, we have unpaid teachers striking all the time, schools are shutting because they can’t pay the water bill, but we have money to buy cars for [top government officials].”

Analysts had predicted that Mondlane’s popularity among young people in this election would make the polls competitive, but there was hardly any doubt that President Nyusi, who served two terms, was going to hand power over to his Frelimo counterpart, Chapo. The 47-year-old Chapo played up his youth in his campaigns and tried to woo young people with promises of ‘change’ but many remained unconvinced.

Election day on October 9, and the initial days that followed, were calm as the poll numbers were collated by the National Election Commission (CNE). Then reports of ballot stuffing, ghost voters, and altered voter registration sheets started to filter in from observers, including the African Union, the European Union and the local association of Catholic bishops.

“The whole thing was organised to steal the elections,” veteran academic Joseph Hanlon, who has studied Mozambican politics for decades and monitored the elections, told Al Jazeera on election day. “In some places, we’re seeing result sheets written in pencil so they can be changed afterward. The elections are irregular from beginning to end.”

As the vote tally dragged on and it became clear that Frelimo would win, tension grew in opposition camps. Mondlane’s Podemos supporters fumed, and so did supporters of Renamo, whose popularity, usually weak, slipped further in the polls.

Mondlane and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade rejected the unofficial results, accusing Frelimo of fraud. Mondlane also claimed victory.

Political assassinations in Maputo?

Trouble escalated early on Saturday, October 19.

Two top Podemos members were assassinated in downtown Maputo: Elvino Dias, Mondlane’s lawyer; and Paulo Guambe, a Podemos candidate for parliament. The two men had left a local bar in a vehicle when two armed men accosted them and fired up to 20 bullets into the car, witnesses said. A third person in the vehicle, a woman, was injured.

Mondlane, on the same day, alleged they had been victims of political assassinations, even as police officials claimed the killings seemed the result of a personal vendetta.

The killings sent shockwaves through Mozambique and the international community. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for investigations, as did the EU, the African Union and the United States. Frelimo, too, urged authorities to do “everything in their powers to shed light on this affair”.

At a vigil on the evening of the murders, Mondlane said he would not be deterred and called on his supporters to demonstrate. “We have proof. The blood of two young men is now on the ground! We will all take to the streets. We will protest with our signs,” he said.

It’s likely demonstrations would have been held without the killings, analyst Americo Maluana told Al Jazeera. “Citizens and political actors do not trust the CNE due to their inability to fulfil their mandate to deliver free and fair elections, even in [the] 2023 local elections,” he said, referring to chaotic municipal elections last October that many said were rife with violations and saw three people killed by security forces after opposition groups protested.

On Monday, October 21, demonstrators, led by Mondlane, gathered in Maputo, at the same spot Dias and Guambe were killed, chanting “Save Mozambique” and “the country is ours”.

Police officials, in apparent attempts to disperse them, opened fire. Rights groups say some demonstrators were shot at with rubber bullets and tear gas canisters, but most were hit by live ammunition. Protests and crackdowns also broke out in other cities including in Nampula, Chiure and Tete.

On October 24, in anticipation of the election results announcement, Mondlane’s supporters again poured onto the streets across the country and clashed with police. Some threw stones and sticks. Others attacked public buildings and burned down one police station. The homes of some Frelimo politicians were also targeted.

Police responded with bullets and tear gas. Most deaths and injuries were recorded on October 24 and 25, rights groups say. One policeman was injured.

Among those killed was 29-year-old Jacinto. The young man had only just stepped out of his home when he was shot dead, his family told Al Jazeera. He never made it to the protests.

Some who stayed home were not spared. One 16-year-old boy was at home when protesters fleeing from the police ran inside his house, Chissungo told Al Jazeera. Police officials, in hot pursuit, arrived and shot his legs, she said.

In hospitals, the number of injured and dead piled up. It’s unclear just how many people have been injured so far. Chissungo said some people are afraid to go to the hospital for fear of being arrested.

‘No more fear’

As Mondlane’s supporters again prepare to take to the streets with renewed vigour on Thursday, it’s unclear just how long the protests are going to hold. Mozambican police on Monday said it had brought criminal charges against the politician for property destroyed in the protests.

Earlier this week, Mondlane reached out to other opposition parties to join forces, and called on Frelimo to form a government of national unity, attempting to push for a model adopted by neighbouring South Africa, where the dominant African National Congress (ANC) failed to win a majority in elections earlier this year and was forced into a coalition.

But Maluana, the analyst, said Frelimo would likely try to use the elections to “further consolidate” its dominance.

Aid workers say the disruptions are grounding aid logistics in the northern Cabo Delgado province where members of al-Shabab, a group affiliated with ISIL (ISIS) but unrelated to the group with the same name in Somalia, are targeting communities. The conflict has raged since 2017 and has seen hundreds killed and two million people displaced.

“It’s impossible to get authorisation for anything because so many things have been on hold as there was already an anticipated change of administrators,” said Hannah Danzinger da Silva, country director for Search For Common Ground, a nongovernmental group working to get aid and services to affected communities.

Strikes and disruptions, she said, will likely hurt many informal workers across Mozambique who can’t do business. “There’s so much necessity for people to go to work and make money because the most pressing need in Mozambique right now is economic security,” Da Silva added.

Meanwhile, a Chapo presidency seems largely sealed, as congratulations from world leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, and China’s President Xi Jinping have rolled in.

Yet, Chissungo, in Maputo, said young protesters, too, remain determined. It’s been too long that many have felt disrespected by politicians, she said, and these protests feel like liberation.

“People are clear that this is the time for us as young people to make history, we either make it now or never,” she said. “The police could scare them before, but now, without fear, that’s a problem. People are saying we are ready to die, and the more suppression that exists, the more powerful people feel.”

Meet woman who went viral for having two husbands and living in same house with them

0

Kenya Stevens is married to two men and seems quite comfortable with her arrangement and even seeks to expand the family. After around a dozen years of marriage, when her first husband Carl confessed to having affection for a coworker, she suggested taking the three of them out to dinner. This was the beginning of her unique marriage.

Kenya and Carl became non-monogamous after Carl recognized they no longer wanted to concentrate on their exclusive relationship, despite a counselor’s advice to the contrary.

She told the New York Post, “My husband wanted several wives. He actually talked to me about this before we got married, and I laughed, like, ‘Whatever!’ I was open to the idea, but if he has the privilege, I would absolutely want the same privilege, which is just fair.”

Kenya and Carl sat down with their three children, who were teenagers at the time, and broke the news of their decision to open up their marriage.

She told the outlet, “Most of their friends’ parents are divorced. So my children were excited that we still love each other and were not coming to have the divorce talk, like the majority of their other friends. They had questions—they wondered how would it work, would they have another father? Those types of logistical questions. But overall, there was excitement, because they have a community to raise them, instead of two very tired parents.”

Her relationship, which was highlighted on the TLC TV program “Seeking Brother Husband,” described how she tries to make it work with both of her husbands — Carl, with whom she has been legally married for 26 years, and Tiger Moonstone, with whom she has been “married” for 10 years — in their shared home.

Kenya claimed that she and her first husband were “not interested in sharing a bedroom any longer” after staying in the same bed for decades. As a result, Carl has his own room in their residence, whereas Kenya shares one with Tiger.

As reported by News18, she clarified that she and Carl are both entrepreneurs, running multiple internet businesses and co-writing books, while Tiger is an investor who spent his days analyzing stock market data.

The throuple have promoted their business, Progressive Love Academy, on several shows where they talk about how they started dating.

And, despite being married to two men, Texas resident Kenya, a self-proclaimed relationships guru and love coach, continues to date and has several partners.

She mentioned, “That’s uncountable. I have many partners, boyfriends and connections. Polyamory is not for everyone because it can be complex in a society where monogamy is a norm.”

Among their three, Kenya is the only one with live-in lovers that she views as partners, even though Carl and Tiger both date other women.

According to Kenya, her two “brother husbands” get along well with one another, and the couples have guidelines when it comes to handling jealousy.

Even Tiger’s ex-wife accepted their arrangement and became friendly with the family, she continued, although it took years of explanation and adjustment, particularly because Tiger’s son had to move in with the throuple.

Explaining why their relationship trumps others, she stated, “We’ve had people going, ‘Why are you doing this? This is wrong.’ We ask them, ‘Have you looked at the divorce rate? It’s 55%. Have you looked at the cheating rate? It’s 66% in the US and 75% in the UK. Forty percent of couples currently married are sexless.’ So, we direct them back to the stats, and ask, ‘Have we beat the stats?’ And the answer is yes.”

Zanu-PF emergency Politburo meeting raises eyebrows

The ruling Zanu PF party has convened an extraordinary politburo meeting this afternoon at its headquarters in Harare, amidst escalating tensions surrounding President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s succession battle. The meeting, announced by party spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa, is set to begin at 2 p.m. today, October 30, 2024.

“The Secretary General of Zanu PF, Obert Mpofu, would like to advise all members that there is an extraordinary session of the Politburo,” Mutsvangwa stated. This comes on the heels of a previous politburo meeting held last week, which marked the start of the annual conference in Bulawayo, followed by a central committee gathering and the conclusion of conference proceedings on Saturday.

Among the resolutions passed at the conference, the most significant was a proposal regarding Mnangagwa’s tenure, which calls for an extension of his presidency until 2030. This resolution stated: “The President and First Secretary of ZANU PF Party, His Excellency, Cde. Dr E. D. Mnangagwa’s term of office as President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and First Secretary of ZANU PF be extended beyond 2028 to 2030.” The party aims to initiate necessary amendments to the National Constitution to implement this decision.

The backdrop to this meeting is a fierce power struggle between Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. In a bid to mitigate rising tensions and avert a potential backlash from Chiwenga and military factions, party legal affairs secretary Patrick Chinamasa, a long-time ally of Mnangagwa, revealed that the President had declined this engineered offer, citing his role in drafting Zimbabwe’s current constitution in 2013 as a constitutionalist.

This situation is particularly ironic, considering that Mnangagwa first ascended to power following a military coup in November 2017. Chinamasa emphasized that implementing the extension requires Mnangagwa’s express approval, and it would be a complex process necessitating two constitutional amendments and subsequent referenda.

In a meeting with Mnangagwa last Monday in Harare, Chinamasa discussed the political landscape ahead of the conference. While the resolution appears to have temporarily assuaged internal conflicts, it has solidified support for Mnangagwa, who is strategically navigating the political landscape to secure his interests without provoking a direct confrontation with Chiwenga and the military.

As Zanu PF members gather for today’s extraordinary meeting, all eyes will be on how the party addresses these succession tensions and the implications for Zimbabwe’s political future.

Barbara Bush supports Kamala Harris campaign and breaks silence on election

0

The daughter of former U.S. President George W. Bush, Barbara Pierce Bush, has voiced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Last weekend, Bush campaigned for the Democratic presidential candidate in Pennsylvania and expressed her desire to see Harris elected as the first Black woman president of the United States.

“It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-Walz campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend,” the 42-year-old told PEOPLE on Tuesday, October 29. “I’m hopeful they’ll move our country forward and protect women’s rights.”

Barbara’s father who was a Republican, served as president from 2001 to 2009, yet her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush, has occasionally diverged from traditional party lines.

In 2010, Laura Bush publicly supported same-sex marriage and abortion rights, and stated that abortion should “remain legal, because I think it’s important for people, for medical reasons and other reasons.”

Barbara Bush has also been vocal on women’s issues. In March 2017, she advocated for Planned Parenthood and spoke at a fundraiser for the organization. “I am proud to stand with Planned Parenthood not only because women, regardless of where they are from, deserve to live dignified, healthy lives,” she said at the event, according to The Texas Tribune. “We know that when women are healthy, their families and their children are healthier, too.”

Although Barbara has identified as independent since 2010, her support for Harris now reflects a clear stance in this election.

Her parents have not publicly commented on the 2024 race, yet former Vice President Dick Cheney, who previously served under George W. Bush, recently announced his support for Harris.

Cheney’s daughter, who is former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, has also endorsed Harris and has campaigned with her.

Harris has additionally received support from Susan Ford Bales, the daughter of the late President Gerald Ford, who condemned the divisive state of politics in an October 21 statement.

“America cannot regress back to a divisive paradigm of loathing toward one another and disdain for our Constitution,” Bales wrote, referring to the January 6 Capitol attack as a moment that must not be repeated.

Barbara Bush is a nonprofit leader and author with a master’s in public administration from Harvard University, and co-founder of Global Health Corps in 2009, a nonprofit aimed at addressing global health issues. She is also the co-author of a memoir in 2017 with her twin sister, Jenna Bush Hager.

In a recent interview, Jenna, co-host of Today with Hoda & Jenna on NBC, lauded Barbara’s influence on her own life, as per a PEOPLE report. “I don’t think I’d have this job. I don’t know [that] I would’ve started this book club,” Jenna said. “She makes me feel brave and empowered because she was my first audience.”

Kendrick Lamar reveals his morning routine and spiritual practice he can’t do without

0

Kendrick Lamar, the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper, has opened up about his well-being in an intimate conversation with former TDE labelmate SZA, published by Harper’s Bazaar on Monday, October 21.

During their hour-and-a-half discussion, the ‘Saturn’ singer, 34, delved into questions about Lamar’s mental health and spiritual practices.

“I literally talk to God,” Lamar told SZA of his day-to-day practices. “Like, it’s to a point where I’ll be starting to think I’m going crazy. But then He has to remind me, ‘No, this is really me.’ ”

After his conversations with God, there’s another daily step he can’t skip.

“My early-morning practice is that I have to run,” the “HUMBLE.” artist said.

“When I started running, that’s where I started to understand. There was this threshold of pain, in the spirituality for me. I remember my shins was aching and I was like, I got one mile to go. Then I get whispers and downloads and start talking about s— that I want to know about. And next thing I’m three miles in, four miles in. I wake up and do that s— every day,” Lamar continued.

Lamar also shared insights about his out-of-body experiences while performing.

“I say some s— on a record and identify with a moment, and then I don’t identify with it anymore. That’s just growth for me. All that s— is subjective,” the “Swimming Pools” rapper shared.

Lamar added that even at a young age, he was “trying to understand myself, trying to find people I could relate to,” as well as “How to identify myself outside myself.”

Noting that it could sound “crazy to a lot of people” or “scary” to others, he elaborated further.

“I’ve learned that I can’t identify with my performances on stage. I can’t hold my true whole identity to that person who’s onstage. Because if I did, that means I will judge every movement every time I f— up a lyric, every time I’m off-key,” Lamar said.

He continued, “It’s too much to deal with. So, I have to have a distance between the performer and the person I close my eyes and look at the ceiling with. I had to develop that tough skin at like 16, 17 years old, not knowing it was not only for my career but for myself. It’s mentally ill for sure.”

Shortly after his highly publicized feud with Drake, Lamar was announced as the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime performer.

He also explained to SZA the meaning behind “Not Like Us,” one of his diss tracks aimed at the Canadian rapper.

“‘Not Like Us’ is the energy of who I am, the type of man I represent. Now, if you identify with the man that I represent ,” Lamar said. “This man has morals, he has values, he believes in something, he stands on something. He’s not pandering.”

Judge Blocks Diddy’s Move To Stop Officials From Leaking His Info

Judge Arun Subramanian rejected Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ request for an extensive gag order in his federal sex trafficking case.

This decision comes amid mounting tensions between the hip-hop mogul’s defense team and federal prosecutors. Both sides have raised concerns over information leaks that could jeopardize the fairness of the high-profile trial.

US Weekly reports that Judge Subramanian directed prosecutors and federal agents to refrain from disclosing confidential grand jury materials. However, he did not grant the full-scale gag order requested by Diddy’s defense team. Instead, the judge’s order aims to prevent any additional leaks that might affect the case’s integrity and public percept

The decision appears to balance both sides’ concerns. By defining specific limitations, the judge ensures that all parties understand what cannot be publicly shared.

According to the court, this is not due to any confirmed misconduct at this stage but rather a preventive measure to safeguard a fair trial process. Judge Subramanian emphasized that the order was issued to avoid any actions that might disrupt court proceedings.

The case has gained further media traction following a New York Post article that described alleged ‘Freak Off’ parties hosted by Diddy, which reportedly involved high-profile guests and explicit activities. Diddy’s defense claims this is part of a coordinated effort by law enforcement and media to influence public opinion and erode his chances of a fair trial. The defense argues that federal agents may have leaked information inappropriately to the press, potentially tainting jury selection in advance.

Judge Subramanian acknowledged the defense’s concerns and noted that if it is confirmed that any government agent involved in the case contributed to these leaks, it would be a serious breach of court protocol. The judge kept the door open for further action, indicating that an evidentiary hearing could be held, depending on the investigation’s findings into potential leaks.

Diddy faces serious charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation with intent to engage in prostitution. He remains detained as his legal team works to appeal the court’s decision on his bond.

The trial is currently set for May 2025, and both sides are expected to return to court in the coming months for pre-trial motions and hearings.

Tim Walz accused of pushing Chinese govt official’s daughter to brink of su!cide during their love affair in 1980s

0

US Democratic vice presidential nominee, Tim Walz had a love affair with the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official during his teaching stint in the Chinese province of Fonshan that was so toxic, it drove her to the brink of suicide, according to a new report .

Jenna Wang, 59, told The NY Post in a phone interview this week that she had fallen head over heels for the Kamala Harris VP pick when he was a young high school English instructor in Foshan, Guangdong province, China.

Wang had expected the passionate 1989 affair to end in marriage but instead, it resulted in a breakup that made her consider taking her own life.

“I was deeply insulted, hurt and I had to leave that place, because many people knew that we had a relationship,” Wang explained, saying that Walz had implied that he intended to marry her.

That included sending Wang letters after returning to the US over the following summer and even asking for a passport-size photo of her to be sent back to Denver, she said, implying that Walz was helping her to obtain a visa.

“His lack of character, as a man, a responsible person who had worked in education or [the] military,” she added. “I thought he also loved me. I loved him.”

The Daily Mail first reported on the allegations by Wang, who said she left China for Italy only a few years after her bad relationship with Walz.

According to an “open letter” Wang also authored seeking to warn the American electorate about Walz, the two were “like husband and wife” at first, sharing tea and holding hands privately, out of the watchful eye of her father, Bin Hui, a labor union leader in her hometown of Guilin.

She said that her father Hui would have been upset to have seen his daughter falling for a Westerner.

Kamala Harris? running mate Tim Walz accused of pushing Chinese govt official?s daughter to brink of su!cide during their love affair in 1980s

Walz, now 60, arrived in China through the nonprofit organization WorldTeach and the two connected while Wang taught at a nearby middle school.

The young lovers enjoyed karaoke together, and Walz showered Wang with gifts including gold jewelry and high-waisted blue jeans, she claims.

But then he became “the type of man against whom a mother warns her daughter not to get involved” with, Wang’s letter adds.

“While, it is true, you had not promised marriage before you had arrived back in China, marriage was what I had assumed,” she wrote. “Too, marriage was what you had led me to believe — as well as led others to believe, including that female colleague of yours with whom we had tea.”

According to Wang, the two had a disagreement over whether she really loved Walz or merely wanted to obtain a visa, which she said came as a “shock” because she had been willing to give up her whole life in China to join Walz in his home state of Nebraska.

“I was giving it up to be with Tim, to get married and start a family,” Wang told the Daily Mail.

“Knowing now that he wasn’t going to marry me made me feel cheap and common, as if I was being treated like a prostitute.”

The pair never met again, but Walz returned to China in 1993 as the head of an annual summer student program connecting Nebraska and Minnesota high schoolers with Chinese institutions.

Walz married his wife, Gwen Whipple, the following year after returning to the US.

The wedding took place on June 4, the fifth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, so the Walzes could “have a date he’ll always remember,” his wife later recalled.

“Tim lied about Tiananmen Square and he’s lied about other things,” Wang told the Daily Mail.

“This is a very crucial moment in history and a man like this does not appear to have the character and integrity to do one of the most important jobs in the world.”

Representatives for the Harris-Walz campaign are yet to respond to the allegations as at press time .

Nick Cannon has opened up about his insecurities during his marriage to Mariah Carey

Nick Cannon has opened up about his insecurities during his marriage to Mariah Carey.

He spoke during a recent appearance on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast.

Nick Cannon said he knew that people were thinking of him as “the kid from Nickelodeon is with Mariah Carey?”

“Psychologically, that started fucking with me,” Cannon revealed.

As a child star, Nick Cannon was an avowed fan of Carey, who is 11 years his senior. They sparked romance rumors in 2008 when Cannon starred in the singer’s “Bye Bye” music video. He was 27 at the time, while she just turned 39.

Shortly after the video’s release, the couple secretly got married. They welcomed twins, Moroccan and Monroe, in 2011 and announced their divorce in 2014.

Despite their age gap and whirlwind engagement, Cannon told Daniels that he didn’t care what the world thought of their relationship, but he struggled with his own internalized stereotypes about “manhood” and gender roles.

“I got married in my 20s still, to the biggest star in the world. My trajectory was here, and then hers — she’s already in a different stratosphere,” Cannon said.

“I would lay up at night, thinking, like, ‘Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?'”

Cannon admitted that he grew accustomed to a lavish lifestyle while being married to Carey.

“There’s nothing wrong with it. And I got really comfortable in it. She’s got islands. I’m waking up at noon, people bringing me steaks on a platter,” he said with a laugh.

Nick, who wed Mariah in 2008, admitted that he lost his “hustler” spirit and things really were put into perspective with the couple welcomed their now 13-year-old twins Monroe Cannon and Moroccan Cannon.

Nick said that once Carey gave birth to their children, his role in the family “hierarchy” exacerbated his insecurities.

“Then when you have children and the hierarchy of man s**t is like ‘Wait, I’m carrying a purse, the diaper bag. I’m standing on the corner waiting,'” he recalled.

“She’s rocking being the alpha that she is. And I believe she needs a dude like that. I’m just not that dude.”

Cannon praised Carey for being “understanding” and “evolved,” even while he was struggling with his identity and career.

In 2009, The New York Times reported that Cannon was due to release an album with Island Def Jam, Carey’s label at the time.

That album never materialized, and Cannon told Daniels he was worried the label was only interested in him because of his wife’s massive sales.

He said that while he loved Mariah and was happy to have someone who wasn’t after him for his money, he saw himself as a main character.

He said: “And the love kept me there because I was like, ‘You need somebody. You need a support system. You need somebody that don’t want you for your money. You need somebody that’s sincere. You need somebody that’s ready to build a family, raise some amazing kids together.’ And that was my goal. But then there was something constantly in me like…”

He admitted that she stood by him through his health struggles.

However his insecurities bled into his professional life as he began to question whether his role as a chairman at Nickelodeon and at Island Def Jam were because of his wife’s connections.

“I was wearing suits everyday cause I’m trying to prove that I’m a man,” Nick said. “The inner adolescent in me, I’m trying to prove that I’m a man because I’m standing next to a woman.”

“That’s the thing, when someone has their own world, their own scope, their own bubble, and you gotta be a participant in that — I’m main character!” he added.

“I was getting mad at myself. It was like muscle atrophy,” Cannon continued. “I’m not being the dude that God put me on this earth to be.”

In the end, Nick—who has been public with his decades-long battle with Lupus—says that his health battle put things into perspective when he realized, “I have so much to do.”

As a result, he joked, “That’s probably why I have 12 kids now.”

Cannon has said he was already a millionaire by his early 20s. The year after his wedding, he was appointed the honorary chairman and development consultant for TeenNick and launched his own production company, NCredible.

He has gone on to host shows like VH1’s “Wild ‘n Out” and Fox’s “The Masked Singer.” Today, the 44-year-old Cannon’s entertainment empire reportedly generates about $100 million a year.

Meanwhile, Carey, 55, is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time and the top-performing female soloist in Billboard history. She has 19 No. 1 songs, more than any other woman and second only to The Beatles.

Nick Cannon is not the only man who has admitted to being jealous of his wife’s financial status.

According to “The Love Gap” by journalist Jenna Birch, there is a modern trend of straight men who claim to want partners who are intelligent, ambitious, and successful, yet decline to pursue women who demonstrate those qualities.

France jails ex-doctor for 27 years in Rwandan genocide trial

0

A court in France has sentenced a Rwandan former doctor to 27 years in jail for crimes relating to the 1994 genocide in his country.

Eugène Rwamucyo was found guilty of complicity in genocide, complicity in crimes against humanity and of conspiring to prepare for those crimes by spreading propaganda and attempting to cover up evidence of mass murder.

The 65-year-old – who was acquitted of charges of genocide and crimes against humanity – denied any wrongdoing. Local media reported that his lawyers said they intended to appeal.

His trial was the eighth in France relating to the genocide in 1994, when an estimated 800,000 people were killed.

Ethnic Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus were targeted in the 100-day massacre by Hutu extremists.

Prosecuting lawyer Nicolas Peron said there was no evidence to show Rwamucyo personally carried out summary executions or acts of torture.

But he said the former medic should not “escape his responsibilities” as one can “kill with words”.

Prosecutors accused Rwamucyo, born to a Hutu family, of disseminating anti-Tutsi propaganda.

They also quoted witness statements, which accused him of helping bury victims in mass graves “in a final effort to destroy evidence of genocide”.

The prosecution had requested he be jailed for 30 years, while representatives for survivors had called on him to be imprisoned for life.

Angélique Uwamahoro, who was 13 during the genocide, said she saw Rwamucyo at a road block in the southern town of Butare and heard him encouraging militiamen to kill Tutsi people, according to the Associated Press news agency.

“He wanted to incite them to kill us so we don’t get out alive,” she said.

But Rwamucyo told the court: “I assure you that I did not order the killing of the survivors nor did I allow them to be killed.”

His lawyers argued his involvement in burials in mass graves was because he wanted to avoid a “health crisis” that would have occurred if they had not been buried.

They said he was being prosecuted for disagreeing with the current government in Rwanda.

In 2009, Rwamucyo was handed a life jail term in absentia by a local court in Rwanda. A French court rejected Rwanda’s extradition request.

He was arrested in Sannois, north of Paris, in 2010 after attending the funeral of a former Rwandan official convicted for war crimes during the genocide.

In December, former doctor Sosthene Munyemana was jailed for 24 years by a French court for crimes including genocide and crimes against humanity. He was accused of organising torture and killings in the genocide.

former team-mate of Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out about his new career as a p0rns@r

0

A former team-mate of Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out about his new career as a p0rns@r.

Ex-Portuguese winger, 36, Fabio Paim began his career alongside Ronaldo in Sporting Lisbon’s academy and had a brief loan spell at Chelsea in 2008.

Former Chelsea footballer, Fabio Paim opens up on his new career as a p0rnstar, insists he had

He has now moved into a very different industry, having revealed he started working as a pornstar earlier this month.

Fabio Paim has been making the headlines since his shock announcement about his new career.

‘Here in Portugal [the news about the pornographic film] is all the rage, everyone is going crazy,’ Paim said in an interview with Globo Esporte via Record.

‘Do you know why? Because people don’t take it the wrong way, that’s just how I am. On a podcast, I said that my dream was to be a pornographic actor. I got a lot of offers. I was on the news, I was on the front pages of newspapers… And I hadn’t done anything.

‘Since everyone was talking about it, [I thought] let’s make a film. And I did. I’ll tell you one thing. It’s good to have sex and still get paid for it.’

Paim was once a promising footballer after rising through the ranks alongside Ronaldo at Sporting.

However, he believes his mentality let him down as he failed to live up to his potential before hanging up his boots in 2018 without receiving a single international cap, while Ronaldo went on to become one of the best players of all time.

‘He grew up with me, we spent a long time together,’ Paim explained as he reflected on his relationship with Ronaldo.

‘I was Sporting’s number one at that time. Cristiano started to be Cristiano when he went to Manchester. Even then, nobody knew he would become what he is today.

‘Today Cristiano is the king, Paim is nobody. And people say “oh, he’s a liar, he wasn’t better”. But the truth is that I was better than him and everyone knows that. I had more talent. But talent is nothing, talent is just a little bit. If you don’t have the rest, you’ll be nobody.’

During a recent podcast, Paim called for Ronaldo to give him one of his five Ballon d’Ors.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo should offer me one of his Ballon d’Ors. I went to Sporting when I was seven years old, I grew up there,’ Paim said on a podcast hosted by PT Clipes.

‘They were years of glory in which I won everything I could. I didn’t reach where I could have reached, but I marked a generation. If people don’t forget it’s because I marked them.

‘I said when I was happy that I thought Cristiano Ronaldo could offer me a Ballon d’Or. But it was with humility. If I had half of Cristiano’s head, it wouldn’t be him and Messi.

‘It would be me, him, and Messi and maybe he wouldn’t have won the Ballon d’Ors that he has. Maybe one of them was mine.’

Ronaldo hit back with a savage response, writing on Instagram: ‘Wtf??? Who is this guy?’

“Do not play with me” – Nicki Minaj calls out Ray J for making jokes about the Diddy Allegations

0

Singer, Ray J has been called out by his colleague Nicki Minaj for making light of the allegations that have been made against embattled music executive, Diddy.

Ray J was confronted by Diddy’s children at a Halloween party over the weekend and things reportedly got heated to which Chris Brown and Ray J’s manager stepped in before punches were thrown.

Ray J went on Instagram Live to on Wednesday to discuss the confrontation with Nicki Minaj, but the conversation took an unexpected turn. Instead of taking Ray J’s side, Minaj criticized the singer for making light of the allegations that have been made against Diddy.

Nicki Minaj spoke on a comment Ray J made about “as*es being taken” in the music industry. Minaj was not amused by this comment, and asked Ray J whether it was something he wanted to stand by.

‘Do you think that’s funny?” she asked. “You seem like you’re joking about it when there are several people traumatized.”

Ray J clarified that he does not intend to make light of experiences that the alleged Diddy victims went through. He claimed to be on the same side as Nicki Minaj, but was blasted by Nicki when he asserted that he knows shady activities are being conducted behind closed doors.

Nicki Minaj asked him whether he’s been in the room when “a*ses were being taken,” and Ray J clarified that he has not. The singer tried to point to different examples of shady practices that he’s caught wind of, but Minaj was not having it. She threatened to exit the Instagram Live chat if Ray J continued to make unfounded claims.

Minaj also requested, a second time, that Ray J stop joking about the Diddy case. Ray J tried to defend himself from Minaj’s criticisms, but ultimately relented and apologized to the rapper.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1851786771324924329

This is not the first time Ray J has discussed the Diddy situation on Instagram Live. He also hopped on a call with Wack 100 to discuss what happened between him and the Combs family. Wack 100 took a very different approach than Nicki Minaj, and issued a warning to the Combs sons. If we run into you,” he told them. “Act like it’s 1995.”

About Dora’s frank talk profoundly book- Miles Sampa

About Dora’s frank talk profoundly book.

MBS31.10.2024

Finally finished reading Dora’s world  thus far. What a book and somehow every chapter intersects into my own life in one way or another. She gave me a glimpse of why the PF dropped the ball towards the 2021 elections and hence the big loss.

Effectively blames ECL and the violent PF cadre that surfaced under his reign. She has zero kind words for her Petauke constituency successor Hon JJ Banda and effectively blames him, Valden Findlay and cadres for ECL & PF’s loss. Talks well of Davies Mwila as PF SG and with the women cabinet peers that secured her 2021 MP adoption.

Reveals advised ECL to get a particular female Minister as his running mate and states that even if it was Chitotela or Chitalu Chilufya that were topping his list for RMs, he would have still lost. I reserve my comments here but to state that maybe he should have been the RM himself to any of the listed.

She has hardly recovered from the loss of her beloved father years back. As in my case; the widow dear mother remain her emotional pillar. We both find inner peace and love in our children and more little ones in her case Paul the grandson. My 1 year old Mailaika ‘marshes my heart ‘ to borrow her praise.

She mentions in good light in her book a Lusaka businessman Bokani Soko. He may have been her advisor here and there.

She mentions and refers several times in the book to her tone, a long time all weather mentor based in SA, one James Ndambo. I actually also have had a similar time immemorial  mentor and happens to be a white Zambian. There is a number of apolitical (non partisan) eminent people from the private sector that hate no Zambian especially across party lines  and only wish a functional flourishing Zambia to better all Zambians.

She talks respectfully of her failed marriage and thereon was not so open of her personal love life after that. She hints on a number possible relationships she may have had and calls one that may have actually been a public secret as an  ‘entanglement’ lol.

Enjoys cooking and a glass or two of red wine or utwalekanalekana in ABC’s voice for good French or South Africa Wine. Fears God and get on with virtually everyone that care to. Rubbed shoulders with about almost all past President and got consulted for advice by RB & ECL.

Highly ambitious and goal driven amidst adversities  is the reason that every youth should read this book to get inspiration.

Dora mentions me twice in the books firstly in reference to having been a top contenders with ECL after Sata died in 2014. She actually called me in the period and spoke for about 40 minutes on why I needed to step down for ECL. He is older, chosen by Sata (boza), taller, wiser bluh bluh. Then I took it as the usual’s near cult Wako ni Wako syndrome of the Easterners especially if competing with a Northerner. So I ignored her forceful advice.

Except one Paramount Chief Mpezeni, about all Easterners had  rejected Sata of the then opposition pre 2011 PF in preference for the Wako ni Wako pioneer RB. They only came to hijack Sata and his party PF after he won. They then showed up to cry the loudest when he died and appointed themselves Chairpersons of his isambo lyamfwa meeting (deceased clothes sharing &  inheritance meeting).

Apa (now) just because it’s Miles Sampa that is the bonafide elected PF President, they are up in arms ati ‘give back PF kulimwine Edgar. He is the rightful owner’. What happened to the resignation letter ai. Then as if political parties are like chiwaya (blazier roasted maize grains) and can simply be gifted or given to another person by proclamation or raise of hands and not by voting via an extra ordinary general conference like we did.

Ala!
How they have conveniently and quickly forgotten that it’s them that refused to vote for him (& what they now referring to ‘his PF’) in 2021 and offloaded their votes in unison to HH. So they can be non tribal after all. What a one sided amoaba chimbuya ‘cousinship’ of Northerners & Easterners. They like to ‘eat masuku pa muntu’ (selfish trickery conduct) on Northerners. No wonder we are now happily cheating on them with our new traditional cousins ba ‘ki masholi’ lol.

Dora is clearly now not pro ECL (nor me/PF) despite having roots possibly from the same village soils of Petauke. She may actually now be pro HH in ny personal opinion. Would not be surprised one day waking up to an ‘alliance partner’ welcoming ceremony for her.

Second mention of my name in her book is towards the last chapters when apparently we met in 2020 at the Government complex for the evening  ‘Black Dollar’ movie premier. She states found me in the VIP holding room with ‘..his lovely  wife Chimuka’. Lol. Dear my Sis Dora, my wife’s name is not Chimuka but Nchimunya.
Si Chimodzi modzi yayi. It’s like transposing Tikambenji with Tilyenji.

Good write up Dora and indeed your career is far from over as you concluded. You may have just started. Let’s see what 2026 brings for you and Zambia. You have inspired me to one day also tell my own story (my version & coated with false narratives) and indeed I have quite a lot  to tell this far. I (like Dora) also don’t know how to hide the truth.

Best wishes Dr Dora Siliya in your personal and career life hereon.

KAMONO FARMING INITIATIVES AND ITS’ DIRECTORS JAILED

KAMONO FARMING INITIATIVES AND ITS’ DIRECTORS JAILED

By Correspondent
THE  office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has successfully secured a conviction against Kamono Farming Initiatives Limited and its Director and associates.

Directors Funwell Zulu, Enock Chibutu, and Mirriam Soko have been convicted for operating an unlicensed banking business and conducting a money circulation scheme, offences under the Banking and Financial Services Act of 2017.

The Drug Enforcement Commission, Anti Money Laundering Investigations Unit (DEC-AMULIU) highlights the Authority’s commitment to upholding financial integrity and protecting the public from fraudulent schemes.

The accused were convicted on two counts: operating a banking business without a license, contrary to Section 6(1) of the Act, and conducting a money circulation scheme, in violation of Section 157(1)(a).

Kamono Farming Initiatives Limited, the primary corporate defendant, was fined K100,000 on Count 1 and K70,000 on Count 2. Funwell Zulu, Enock Chibutu, and Mirriam Soko, who played integral roles in promoting the scheme, were each fined K60,000 per count. In total, each individual defendant faces fines of K120,000, with an alternative sentence of nine months’ simple imprisonment per count, to run concurrently if they default on paying the fines.

This conviction follows a detailed investigation by Given Sakala, an investigator from the DEC-AMULIU which revealed that Kamono Farming Initiatives Limited, its director and associates had been soliciting investments from the public under the guise of high-yield agricultural opportunities.

The defendants assured contributors of substantial returns, purportedly from lucrative farming ventures.

However, the court found that the scheme relied solely on funds from new investors to sustain payouts to earlier participants, a classic hallmark of a Ponzi scheme.

No tangible farming or commercially viable activity backed the promises made, and the operation was effectively functioning as an unlicensed banking business, lacking the required authorisation from the Bank of Zambia.

While the convictions on the first two counts signal a clear message against financial misconduct, Magistrate Wishimanga’s ruling took an unexpected turn on the third charge of money laundering under the Prevention and Prohibition of Money Laundering Act. Despite the weight of evidence presented, the court found the accused not guilty of money laundering, citing insufficient grounds to establish this additional offense.

In addressing the case, Hon. Wishimanga highlighted the gravity of the convictions and underscored that the fines should be paid cumulatively. This ruling stands as a critical reminder to the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent investment schemes and underscores the importance of verifying the legitimacy of financial ventures.

The National Prosecution Authority remains steadfast in its mission to confront and curtail financial crimes that threaten the security of our economy and citizens. This case serves as evidence of the vigilance of Zambia’s legal and regulatory bodies in identifying and dismantling schemes that exploit the public’s trust.

GBM’S HEALTH DETERIORATES

INCARCERATED former Defence Minister, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, is struggling with deteriorating health in prison and has asked the court to allow him seek specialised medical treatment in South Africa, court documents have revealed.

And Mr Mwamba, who is currently serving a five-year jail sentence at Mwembeshi Correctional facility for failure to declare interest and money laundering charges, has renewed his application for bail pending appeal in the Lusaka High Court.

His lawyer, State Counsel Bonaventure Mutale, has filed an application for bail pending appeal, citing Mwamba’s swollen thighs and legs, indicating ineffective medication.

Mwamba was sentenced to five years imprisonment by Magistrate Standford Ngobola on October 10 for conflict of interest and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.
However, Mwamba’s legal team, led by lawyer Mr.Bonaventure Mutale SC, submitted the new application before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court High court division, citing health concerns and questions over the legitimacy of his conviction.

In his appeal, Mwamba’s legal team highlighted a recent visit to Mwembeshi Correctional Facility, where Mutale observed visible swelling in Mwamba’s thighs and legs. Mwamba claims it was evident that his medication was no longer effective, and he required a medical review by his doctors in South Africa.

The facility’s Deputy Officer in Charge confirmed to Lawyer Mutale that while a clinic is available, inmates needing advanced care are referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). Mr. Mutale argued that Mwamba’s appeal has strong prospects of success, raising critical questions of law and pointing out that the evidence linking Mwamba to the alleged offenses was insufficient.

He further contended that the prosecution failed to provide key documents, such as bid bonds or minutes from relevant meetings, that would substantiate the charges.
The legal team also described Mwamba’s sentence as “manifestly contestable,” arguing that the five-year term with hard labor was excessive, especially for a first offender.

Mr. Mutale warned that delays in processing Mwamba’s appeal record could mean he would serve a significant portion of his sentence before the appeal is heard as granting Mwamba bail would not disadvantage the prosecution, asserting that Mwamba is not a flight risk.

Principal Resident Magistrate Sandford Ngobola convicted and sentenced Mwamba in 13 of the 24 counts he was charged with failure to declare interest and money laundering charges and acquitted him on 11 counts of possession of property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime. The court also fined him K50,000 in default to nine months imprisonment in count nine where he was found guilty of money laundering.

Mwamba had filed a notice of bail pending appeal on grounds that the magistrate erred at law when he convicted him in one to eight on the charges of failure to declare interest. In passing ruling, Mr. Ngobola denied Mwamba bail pending appeal stating that he was not satisfied that the applicant made out a persuasive case for bail pending appeal.

Mukelabai maintains Malanji’s companies never made profits in Congo

Mukelabai maintains Malanji’s companies never made profits in Congo

THE economic and Financial crimes Court has set December 12 for ruling on whether or not Joseph Malanji and his co accused Fredson Yamba will be found with a case to answer for the alleged mismanagement of public funds and possession of tainted wealth.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/xboQv7jr4TsPX9Xm/?mibextid=oFDknk

The State closed its case yesterday after top Drug Enforcement Commission investigator Kwaleyela Mukelabai concluded his lengthy testimony of how he solved the puzzle of Malanji and Yamba’s alleged crimes during investigations.

In cross examination by Malanji’s lawyer Makebi Zulu, Mukelabai maintained that according to his investigations Malanji never made any profit from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo through his businesses.

He said Malanji falsified documents claiming his company Gibson power systems was sub contracted for specific works by China Civil.

“According to your client Malanji, Mass investment paid money through Row Bank to Gibson power systems and that he told Mass investment to get the money from China Civil,” Mukelabai said.

“The company itself Mass Investment is not existent in the Congo, according to the documents from the Bank. Mass investment is non-existence according to address.”

Asked if he spoke to owners of Mass Investments, Mukelabai said it was impossible to speak to mass investment about the loan agreement because it is non existent.

“The documents provided had a wrong address and wrong numbers. I had one mission to verify the document and information given by your client (Malanji) not to look for signatories to the loan,”he said.

Asked if the documents were false the investigator said; “That’s why your client is in the doc because he manufactured them. He made them or could have made them which ever one suits.”

“It’s was difficult to trace the owners of the company because the details were false. Mr Malanji hysically signed the sub-contract he represented the company, personally there’s nothing on him,” Mukelabai said.

When asked about how many properties Malanji owns Mukelabai said he knows of the seven
houses in Silverest gardens, a house in Roma park and some properties in Kitwe.

He said the his focus of interest regarding his investigation was the financial transactions made by Malanji between 2020 and 2021.

“The charge is not about acquisition but possession. He possessed Gibson Royal Hotel in 2020 after the application of funds from Morocco,”Mukelabai said.

“There is illegality about the trips from Morocco he deposited US$500,000 which was used to liquidate the loan he obtained from FNB.”

When asked if there was anything wrong to possess the said amount the witness said it is reasonable suspicion for illegalities;”to have such an amount if you can’t afford.”

He said Malanji remained silent about the money when he was questioned.

Asked if he shredded the warn and caution statement he recorded earlier Mukelabai denied.

“I never tore any statement I recorded a statement in the presence of his lawyers, I never interviewed him earlier. I never tore a statement in your face,” Mukelabai said.

“Prior to the warn and caution he gave documents relating to the Congo and when I interviewed him on November 1 he changed his statement saying he was hedging funds, that made me suspect.”

Asked if Malanji was part of the ministerial procurement committee, Mukelabai denied.

He confirmed that the correspondence was between former presidential economic advisor
Hibene Mwiinga told Yamba to encourage ministry of foreign affairs to obtain a loan from Vakif Bank in Turkey to buy a chancery and staff houses.

Mukelabai also maintained that Malanji diverted US$4.6 million the money meant for the purchase of a chancery in Turkey.

“Christopher Pomboloka who was Mr Malanji’s driver said he carried the bags that Mr Malanji came with from Turkey and put them in Mr Malanji’s sitting room,”

“I know the bags had money and ended up in Malanji’s house according to what I was told.”

He said he attempted to interview Burhan Asaf Safak regarding to the purchase of a chancery, he never cooperated and threatened to unleash
the Turkish army on him.

Mukelabai added that variation happens within a head and not across heads hence the reason Yamba landed himself into trouble.

In this case Yamba a fomer secretary to the treasury and his co-accused Malanji are accused of failing to adhere to guidelines relating to the management of public resources and possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Yamba is alleged to have abrogated the law relating to the management of public property when he approved the transfer of K154, 201, 197 for the purchase of a chancery in Turkey.

Malanji is accused of possessing two helicopters BELL430 and a BELL 206 Jet Ranger helicopter suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Wishimanga directed the parties to ensure that they file submissions within 21 days by November 19.

The matter comes up on December 12 for ruling…

Sinkamba loses bid to block HH from suspending ConCourt Judges

Sinkamba loses bid to block HH from suspending ConCourt Judges

CONSTITUTIONAL Court Judge, Kenneth Mulife has dismissed an application by Green Party president Peter Sinkamba, seeking an interim stay of President Hakainde Hichilema’s decision to suspend three judges.

Mr Sinkamba’s application challenged the suspension of judges Annie Sitali, Mugeni Mulenga, and Palan Mulonda, arguing that the President’s decision was unlawful and sought to halt its implementation.

However, the Attorney General and Judicial Complaints Commission countered that the sought order was untenable since the judges had already been suspended.
They urged the court to dismiss the application with costs.

Judge Mulife agreed, citing the principle that an order of stay cannot issue where the decision sought to be stayed has already been implemented.

He concluded that Sinkamba’s application was frivolous and misconceived.
“The law is well settled that an order of stay cannot issue where the decision or judgment sought to be stayed has already been implemented,” Judge Mulife stated.
The ruling emphasised that the applicable provision for the summons was Order X, Rule 2(1)(2) of the Constitutional Court Rules, not Order 59/13/2 of the White Book, as suggested by the respondents.

Judge Mulife noted that the omission to expressly mention an order of stay in Order X, Rule 2(1) of the CCR should not exclude its applicability to the relief sought.

However, he maintained that the overriding question was whether a decision that had been implemented could be stayed. “The basis for the principle is logically that there would be nothing to stay once a decision or judgment has been implemented,” Judge Mulife explained.
The judge cited the case of Joshua Banda v AG, where the petitioner sought an order to stay the President’s decision to remove him from the office of High Court judge.
In that case, the presiding single judge ruled that there was nothing to stay because the President’s decision had already been implemented.

PW1: I used the computer

Counsel Leon Lemba: What is the name of the current President?
PW1: HH. Hakainde Hichilema.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Are you aware former President FTJ was known as Bally?
PW1: I don’t know.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Are you aware that Bally is a word that children can use to refer to their father or any elderly person?
PW1: I don’t know.

Counsel Leon Lemba: So, because of the numerous meanings that can be attributed to it, you have to conclude by way of assumption that they are referring to this person, right?
PW1: Not really.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What are you going to use if it’s not an assumption?
PW1: It’s the evidence that was produced in the computer. Since we know that in 2026 we’ll have elections and the author Mr. Sean Tembo is a presidential candidate and we can conclude that he refered to the President Hakainde Hichilema.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Read the first text you were given to translate? Bally apa akangiwa kuipa. What is the translation?
PW1: Here, Bally has failed lamentably.

Counsel: Read the next.
PW1: But in 2026, ngati bantu bafuna kuvotela chipuba chinangu, it’s okay. It’s fine, SET can wait until 2031.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Let’s interrogate the name SET? Those are acronyms?
PW1: Yea.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What do they mean?
PW1: I don’t know.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What did the computer tell you?
PW1: It brought the same name SET. It’s the name of a person.

Is that what the computer said?
PW1: Yes. That’s what it did.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Where is the computer generated report where you copied your report from?
PW1: At the Ministry, curriculum development center.

Counsel Leon Lemba: For you to copy from the computer generated report and produce your report which you have presented before this court, it means the computer generated report was in possession at one point?
PW1:  Yes.

Counsel Leon Lemba: At what time did you leave it with the Ministry?
PW1:  At around September 10, 2023.

Counsel Leon Lemba: That computer generated translation in it original form, were you able to print it?
PW1: No

Counsel Leon Lemba: Why didn’t you print it and bring it to court?
PW1: I was following orders from my boss.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Who?
PW1: The Permanent Secretary.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What’s their name?
PW1:  I don’t know.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What were the specific orders?
PW1: Translate and interpret from the computer.

Counsel Leon Lemba: The PS did not tell you not to print the original?
PW1: No.

Counsel Leon Lemba: There is the original computer generated translation there. Why didn’t you print the original text and bring it to court?
PW1: I don’t know

Counsel Leon Lemba: Which statement was interpreted for you to have come up with the response in your report that saying “Bally has failed lamentably” has potential to divide the country?
PW1: Bally apa akangiwa kuipa …

Counsel Leon Lemba: Which word translates to dividing the country?
PW1: The whole sentence.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Which word talks about potential there?
PW1: Kuvotela chipuba chinangu.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Which words there means potential?
PW1: There’s no word there.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Which word translates into dividing the country?
PW1: It’s a phrase here.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Is there a specific word in the original text that refers to potential?
PW1: Yes. Chipuba chinangu.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What does the word chipuba mean?
PW1:  Fool.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Chinangu?
PW1: Another fool.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Another can mean potential?
PW1: Yes.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Which words mean dividing?
PW1: Kuvotela chipuba chinangu.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What does kuvotela mean?
PW1: To cast a vote.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Do you know the charges the accused is facing?
PW1: I don’t know.

Counsel Leon Lemba: It’s use of insulting language?
PW1: Okay.

Counsel Leon Lemba: What is your response or reaction to the words you translated?
PW1: I was performing government duties as per my request from my boss.

Counsel Leon Lemba: (hands PW1 two excerpt print outs, one from the defunct Post Newspaper and another from Lusaka Times) Can you read what the headline says?

PW1: Scott, the stupid white man – HH

Counsel Leon Lemba: and the second print out?

PW1: Sata is chimbwi no plan – HH.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Read the first paragraph?
PW1: UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema yesterday likened President Micheal Sata to a hyena without a plan.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Your evidence is that by President Hakainde Hichilema calling Scott the most stupid white man is an insult?
PW1: Yes.

Counsel Leon Lemba: And likening Sata to a hyena?
PW1: It’s also an insult.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Do you agree with me that these are political statements?
PW1: Yes they are.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Even your findings that members of the public will be divided was in the instruction from the PS at Ministry of Education, correct?
PW1: Is it there, I don’t know. I don’t see it.

Counsel Leon Lemba: When you were given this statement to translate, did you ever go to Mr. Sean Tembo’s Facebook page to read the alleged statement yourself?
PW1: No

Counsel Leon Lemba: It follows that you don’t  know if those things were published by Mr Tembo?
PW1: I don’t know.

Counsel Leon Lemba: In fact, those words are not on his Facebook page. What’s your comment?
PW1: I don’t know anything.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Witness, are you a firm believer in democracy?
PW1:  Yes, I am.

Counsel Leon Lemba: You are aware Zambia is a Constitutional democracy?
PW1: Yes.

Counsel Leon Lemba: And because of that, opposition political parties are allowed to exist?
PW1: Yes they are.

Counsel Leon Lemba: And they are allowed to point out failures of the government?
PW1: Correct.

Counsel Leon Lemba: And in that spirit, you are aware that the current president on numerous occasions was allowed to call out Mwanawasa, Micheal Sata and Edgar LUNGU on their failures?
PW1: True, correct.

Counsel Leon Lemba: (On the two articles) Are you able to distinguish whether the language is insulting or disrespectful?
PW1: Yes, I am.

Counsel Leon Lemba: You are also aware that insulting language is criminalized whereas insulting language is not?
PW1: Correct

Counsel Leon Lemba: What is the difference between disrespectful language and insulting language?
PW1: Disrespectful language is language with no respect. Insulting language is a language that is a bit stronger and May anger someone.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Can an insulting statement be disrespectful?
PW1: Yes.

Counsel Leon Lemba: Can a disrespectful statement be insulting?
PW1: Yes.

UKA DEMANDS THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF JOURNALIST, THOMAS ZGAMBO AND TWO KALULUSHI BROTHERS DETAINED FOR DEFAMING PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

.…calls on the Human Rights Commission to put a stop to the violation of human rights perpetrated by the New Dawn Government.

LUSAKA, Thursday, October 31, 2024

The United Kwacha Alliance-UKA demands the immediate and unconditional release of journalist, Thomas Allan Zgambo who has been in detention for over a fortnight at Lusaka’s Ridgeway Police Station on criminal defamation charges.

We are also dismayed by the detention of 22-year-old, Elijah Kaumba along with his 26-year-old elder brother, Ernest Kaumba of Kalulushi, who has been in police custody for 27 days for allegedly defaming President Hakainde Hichilema.

We wish to categorically state that the extrajudicial punishment of journalists and citizens with divergent views is not provided for in the laws of the land and is a brazen act of state harassment and intimidation.

It is hypocritical for President Hichilema to allow the police to continue detaining citizens for longer than necessary on bondable offenses when the Head of State has made public pronouncements at various fora, to the effect that accused persons arrested at 10:00 hours should be admitted to bond by 14:00 hours.

UKA will not sit idly by and watch such excesses being perpetrated by powerful people connected to the President in Acting Auditor General, Ron Mwambwa, and State House Special Assistant, Lawrence Mwananyanda, who are the complainants in Mr Zgambo’s case.

We challenge Dr. Mwambwa and Mr. Mwananyanda to seek justice from the courts of law if they feel aggrieved with Mr Zgambo instead of abusing state power.

It is strange that President Hichilema’s lieutenants have made it a habit to sue members of the general public when they have all the power in the country.

It is also unfortunate that Mr Zgambo is now a victim of state harassment when he fought hard to ensure the UPND assumed office in the 2021 presidential and general elections.

We also find it appalling that the Kaumba brothers who are in their primes, were arrested in Kalulushi and transported to Lusaka where they have no relatives, for merely producing a Tik Tok video in which they are alleged to have defamed President Hichilema.

It is a blatant violation of human rights and abuse of state power for the police to detain the Kaumba brothers for 27 days without arraigning them before the courts of law while the Human Rights Commission –HRC remains silent. We call upon HRC to stand for the people of Zambia and to put a stop to the human rights abuses perpetrated by the New Dawn Government.

We commend the Law Association of Zambia-LAZ for taking interest in Mr Zgambo’s case in the pursuit for justice and the rule of law.

In conclusion, we would like to call on all Zambians to be vigilant and to speak out against the abuse of state power and human rights violations by the New Dawn Government.

Upholding Integrity at ZESCO: A Tribute to Leadership

Upholding Integrity at ZESCO: A Tribute to Leadership

By Dr. Larry Mweetwa

The recent developments at ZESCO, particularly regarding the non-renewal of the Managing Director’s contract and calls for the removal of Head of Procurement, Mr. Felix Munsaka, have sparked significant discourse within the organization and the broader community. Amidst these challenges, it is essential to recognize the high level of integrity and commitment to ethical practices that both the MD and Mr. Munsaka have exemplified.

Under the leadership of the MD, ZESCO has witnessed a transformative period focused on transparency and accountability despite the catastrophic consequences of climate change that impacted ZESCO’s revenue Basket, MD Mapani did his level best to come up with long lasting interventions to ensure the power utility company stays afloat. This dedication to integrity has been vital in fostering trust among stakeholders and ensuring that the institution operates with the highest ethical standards. By prioritizing ethical decision-making and resisting political pressure, the MD has set a benchmark for leadership in parastatals, demonstrating that it is possible to uphold principles in the face of adversity. The biggest challenge is that when one stands up not to do something wrong especially around contract issues due to pressure from people who think they are more closer to the messiah, then they come after you as an enemy and pedal lies.

Mr. Felix Munsaka, as the Head of Procurement, has played a crucial role in this journey. His commitment to fair and transparent procurement processes has not only safeguarded ZESCO’s resources but also reinforced the importance of integrity in public service. Munsaka’s approach has been characterized by diligence and a steadfast refusal to succumb to external pressures, which often compromise ethical standards. His efforts have helped ZESCO navigate complex procurement challenges while ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering a culture of accountability. But when things don’t go our way then nishi muntu Twamuzonda. Let’s learn to unite and be brothers’ Keepers.

The Board Chairman, Mr. Vickson Ngube, has rightly pointed out the need for integrity and never to undermine competent leadership. In an environment where personal interests often take precedence over collective goals, the actions of the MD and Munsaka stand out as a testament to resilience. Their leadership has demonstrated that the path of integrity is not always easy but is essential for the long-term success of ZESCO.

Moreover, the call for unity among the Tongas resonates deeply. It is crucial for communities to rally around individuals who exhibit integrity rather than allow divisions to weaken the collective effort. The internal strife highlighted in the current situation reflects a broader challenge—supporting one another in the face of adversity is vital for progress.

In conclusion, the integrity cultivated by ZESCO’s leadership, particularly under the MD and Mr. Munsaka, is commendable. Their example serves as a reminder that ethical leadership is not merely a personal virtue but a necessity for organizational success and community development. As ZESCO navigates these turbulent times, it is imperative to support and uphold leaders committed to doing what is right, ensuring that integrity remains at the forefront of the institution’s mission.

Saudi Arabia nears deal for stake in Zambia copper mine

Saudi Arabia nears deal for stake in Zambia copper mine

Saudi Arabia is in the final stages of negotiations for a stake in a copper mine in Zambia.

The deal is estimated to be between $1.5 billion and $2 billion for a 15-20% equity stake in the Zambian assets.

This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to reduce reliance on oil by securing essential minerals and bolstering the mining industry.

Saudi Arabia is nearing the final stages of negotiations for a stake in a copper mine in Zambia, with a deal anticipated by the end of the year. The CEO of Ma’aden, Saudi Arabia’s leading mining company, disclosed this development to Reuters on Wednesday.

“We are looking at Zambia, we are talking with a company there, with a mine there, so those are pretty advanced stage discussions,” CEO Robert Wilt, who is also vice chairman of Saudi Arabia’s international mining venture Manara Minerals, said.

“We’d have something wrapped up by the end of the year,” Wilt, speaking on the sidelines of the Future Investment Forum conference in Riyadh, said.

Earlier this month, sources revealed that Manara, a joint venture between Ma’aden and Saudi Arabia’s $925 billion Public Investment Fund, was close to finalizing a deal to acquire a minority stake in Zambian copper and nickel assets owned by Canadian miner First Quantum Minerals.

Sources indicated that the Saudi company was in advanced discussions to acquire a 15% to 20% equity stake in the Zambian assets, with one estimating the deal’s value at between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.

“Obviously, Africa is mineral rich with a lot of copper in the copper belt. So it just makes perfect sense, because the geographical proximity and our desire for copper to be looking in Africa,” Wilt said.

Manara has made substantial strides in the metals sector, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s strategy to secure essential minerals and bolster its mining industry. This expanding sector forms a crucial part of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s Vision 2030, which aims to reduce the country’s reliance on oil. Manara’s first major international move was in 2023 when it acquired a 10% stake in Vale’s $26 billion copper and nickel subsidiary, Vale Base Metals.

According to CEO Robert Wilt, copper has emerged as a “top priority” for Manara, given its importance as a base metal, much like aluminum, in meeting the rising demand tied to the global energy transition.

“The niche battery metals, while important, are not as fundamental to the success of the development of the downstream, but copper is essential.”

MULENGA SATA THREATENED TO BURN ME AND MY FAMILY-FORMER LUSAKA MAYOR

MULENGA SATA THREATENED TO BURN ME AND MY FAMILY-FORMER LUDLSAKA MAYOR

About Mulenga Sata / ECL 10th Memorial Statements:

Firstly I have been in hibernation Politically, So I didn’t even know where the Memorial will be held coz social medial pulled me left right and centre until I called my trusted source who explained that there are actually two memorial services.

On my mind, I asked myself, “What the hell is going on?”

Our great leader died 10 years ago. Why now two services?

To cut the story short I got drawn to a statement by Ba Mulenga Sata on ECL!

Firstly Politics aside but background history!

If there is anyone who should know ba Edgar Lungu better is ba Mulenga bene because, in Rhodes Park, at Farmers House naku Nkwazi Kwine ba MULENGA was there and very well knew bonding yaba Cobra and ba Edgar!
He could listen even to the lowest whisper.

I personally feel that it’s not ECL’s intention to shun both events. He has been put in a very tight corner and what is worse even by pipo that he genuinely forgave and helped.

1. My Experience;

When the King Cobra  died I was Mayor, I was his last born in leadership, Mulenga was in UK naba Mayo bana Kaseba and others.

When the body arrived at the then Lusaka International Airport, me personally I knew what I saw days before. New President’s Campain in making.

It got us shocked that Pipo were already staged to get anointed like a monarchy, I didn’t agree to that because it was too early.

If anything, ECL never publicly harboured intentions for being President, he was a very quite person.
I was chairing the First Lusaka City Council of the PF Government where the President MCS was also a Councillor ( Alderman), Vice President Guy Scott, Minister of Justice, Minister of Lands, Miles Sampa, Prof Nkandu Luo ( Edu) ECL then as Deputy Minister Office of the VP, Hon Gerry Chanda D Minster Home Affairs and Minister of Finance ba Chikwanda.
Now imagine being a Chair amongst these highly accomplished personalities.
As for Mulenga Sata, he was then just a councillor kwa Bauleni.

2. My Personal Encounter With Mulenga Sata:

Fast forward, my deputy then was Theresa Funga, Councilor for Matero ward who was later sent into foreign service where after a few Months she died.

Mulenga Sata became the Deputy Mayor of Lusaka after a narrow win against Shakafuswa Christopher, current MP for Mandevu Constituency and late Kapapula .How we helped him win is history.

3. When my term was ending, he whispered that the old man wanted him to take over my reign as new Mayor
I enquired from the old man who expressed ignorance on his so called endorsement from him but simply joked that your friends.

I convinced all councillors and we campaigned until he won, next he went on Chikwelete neck and Goodson banda ‘grabbing’ their district Title as big boss and a started running the Intercity thugs.

4. My term was coming to an end and I didn’t want to recontest as Mayor so I approached my brother Mulenga that I could support him as Mayor of Lusaka full time and in exchange I simply asked him to support me to run my last term as President For all Mayors in Zambian after running a successful term. ( For those who don’t know what being boss of all Mayors in Zambia means; Your bigger boss to all Mayors’, Town Clerks and Council Chairs in Zambia ( LGAZ).
He genuinely agreed.

After he won as Mayor, Mwebantu he changed his mind that he wanted to also be LGAZ boss( Ine shocked)
I reminded him about our deal-but he refused that such never existed!
He was the son of the Most powerful man in the land but I told myself that I did not have any more powers but I would go and defeat him in the elections in Solwezi LGAZ elections.

He was defiant and promised that I wasn’t going to win against him. My 3 days stay there
In Solwezi was horrific and scaring!

5. By the way for all those who knew me especially ba UPND ama mayors and Councilors then, in my term as LGAZ President I never chose a party, I sent a lot of current DCs in UPND to several countries , actually Hon Makwembo UPND big boss in Southern Province and most UPND local government leaders in Northwestern and Western Provinces can testify to that because I have the proof.

6. In Solwezi most Copperbelt journalist who are still alive know what happened and how I was pushed to withdraw from contesting when those jerabos led by Yongson ( MHSRIP ) stormed Solwezi and all I had was my voters and a driver.

Even with defiant opponent, it was impossible to stand, the other candidate Mr Munthali had to flee to the bushes and only resurfaced on Election Day to lose.

When a reporter asked me from Chengelo Radio, why am daring opposing the President’s Son! I told her that I was also a Son because the President was our Father.

Thereafter, he won the elections with serious jerabo intimidations presence.

Why did I withdraw at the last minute?

7. I received an anonymous call from his cadres from Lusaka that if before dawn I don’t withdraw, they would burn my ka house . Nemulanda, mfwile pali LGAZ?

8. In conclusion, We respect the Family’s decision and I don’t have a problem with that!

But as for Mulenga speaking if you asked me, he should have kept quite.

He ditched his dad’s Party three months after burial and went to join Uncle Bally, he again ditched Uncle Bally came begging before ECL. ECL listened, gave him a position as Minister of State House among others.
Right now, we don’t know which party he belongs to since he keeps changing.

9. Let me end my saying that we should as a Country emulate other countries by respecting  our Former Heads of State.
I don’t like what am seeing happening to ECL.
And never will I ever take pride in seeing President HH being disrespected 5 years or even a decade from now.

Let us not create the Office of the President to be an office our future children shall fear to enter or rather  contest because of previous historical harassments.

WE ARE READY TO DELIVER VISIONARY LEADERSHIP – FRED M’MEMBE

WE ARE READY TO DELIVER VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

The nation needs visionary leadership for the future. And we are ready to deliver that visionary leadership for Zambia’s future.

I personally have a passionate commitment to Zambia’s future. The values I bring to leadership are the values instilled in me by my strong upbringing. I understand that life is sometimes harsh. But I believe that as a people we have a responsibility when one of us falls down, we must help to lift them back up. That’s what decency and fairness is all about.

Another thing I have learnt is the absolute value of hard work. Of not being wasteful. And the importance of planning for the future. For me, these are enduring values. And these are the values that I would bring to our nation’s challenges.

In 2026, Zambians will face another stark choice: a choice between the future and the past. We will be faced with a choice how we want to secure the future for our children, for our communities and for our nation. We believe that the government of Zambia must truly change in the real sense. The policies that the current and previous government have pursued and advanced belong to the past and are not helping the great majority of our people. For us, our solution are centred around policies that put Zambians first. That put the great Zambians first.

After more than three years now,  Mr Hichilema and his government have lost touch with the poor and working people. They no longer understand what fairness, justice, equity and peace actually mean. They simply don’t understand the new challenges that we face now and in the future.

The challenge is to truly change our hospitals and make health services free and socialised. And above all, the challenge to transform our education system and make it free, of great quality and socialised.

The UPND have no plans for the future because it’s not going to be there to deal with the challenges of the future. The way forward for Zambia is to choose Compatriots and a party with progressive ideas to meet the challenges of the future.

A visionary leader and a new government who understand and respect the values upon which our independence struggle was fought. Look at the way in which our land is being dished out anyhow? We need leaders with values of honesty, equity, humility and solidarity. We need to build a Zambia anchored on justice, equity and peace. We need a nation where there’s decency, fairness and respect. You can’t have a plan for Zambia’s future if you have lost sight of such basic values.

Lungu rejects reconciliation with Hichilema

FORMER president Edgar Lungu has ruled the possibility of reconciliation with his successor, Hakainde Hichilema, citing alleged persecution of his family.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/9xUiqvaUmyu2zVwt/?mibextid=oFDknk

Lungu’s decision comes after weeks of advocacy from the church for the two leaders to reconcile.

The rift between Lungu and President Hichilema has been ongoing.

For instance, two days before the 2021 election, when Lungu told a cheering crowd of PF cadres at the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport that upon winning the vote. he would arrest President Hichilema for allegedly receiving $300,000 from a mining investor.

However, Lungu’s defeat put those plans on hold. Now, Lungu claims law enforcement agencies are planning to raid his son’s farm, further fueling his refusal to reconcile

Lungu wonders why he should reconcile with his successor, yet his family was being pursued further alleging that there is a scheme to eliminate him.

Speaking on the conversation podcast hosted be Emmanuel Mwamba on Sunday, Lungu claimed that law enforcement agencies were planning on raiding the farm belonging to his son Dalitso yesterday, in order to distract him from attending late President Sata’s 10th memorial anniversary.

Lungu clarified that he’s son has not fled the country contrary to rumors making rounds that, he has left Zambia just like his sister Tasila who is Chawama member of parliament.

“I have information that they want to raid my son’s farm to disrupt the happenings. They are saying he has run away. I rang him to say Dalitso where are you?-and he said am at home. My passport is with the State,”he said.

Lungu said based on the same he felt the proposed reconciliation with his successor was lacking in warmth claiming there was a ploy to prevent him from contesting the 2026 election and send him to the ‘land of flowers’.

“There’s no desire by anyone in office to reconcile with me. They would rather eliminate me from the ballot and if possible put a bullet in my head,” he alleged.

Lungu said he has come to terms that he will not     try his luck for his third term for the second time, but only God knows what he deserves.

“The fight that I cannot be on the ballot has been appreciated. The fight that I will get a bullet is being investigated but all the same I can say God almighty knows what I deserve,” he said.

Lungu maintained that he had to return to active politics and sacrifice his retirement benefits because he was left with no option but to stand up for his family.

“I was in retirement someone came and woke me up, harrassed me to a point where I had to defend myself. Am still defending myself, I have to defend my family but my biggest family is the Zambian people who are suffering whom we promised a lot of things we haven’t done,”he said.

He added that he will fulfill his promise to Sata to take PF to greater heights as it was not for sale to the highest bidder, hence he doe not see the need for reconciliation over coffee.

“I became President because of PF and then I should watch PF die because am enjoying benefits from HH ? I said no no no this can’t be I came back to re-organize PF and am still going to make sure that PF survives; because I owe a lot to PF,” said Lungu.

“They are killing PF and we should reconcile with handshakes over coffee?.”

SOCIALIST PARTY PRESIDENT DR. FRED M’MEMBE RAISES ALARM OVER POLICE MILITARIZATION

SOCIALIST PARTY PRESIDENT DR. FRED M’MEMBE RAISES ALARM OVER POLICE MILITARIZATION

Lusaka, Zambia — Socialist Party President Dr Fred M’membe has expressed grave concerns over the increasing militarization of the Zambian police service.

Speaking at the Lusaka Magistrate Court on Wednesday, Dr. M’membe highlighted the worrying trend of transforming a civilian institution into a military-like force, warning of severe consequences for civil liberties and public safety.

“There is a worrying trend that is emerging in our country, and that is the militarization of the police service here,” Dr. M’membe stated.

“When you turn the police service, which is supposed to be a civilian organization, into a military institution, there will be problems. They are being armed like an army, and their conduct is increasingly becoming that of the military.” He added.

Dr. M’membe emphasized the fundamental difference between police and military roles, pointing out that the primary function of the police is to maintain law and order without resorting to lethal force.

“The police is not there to k!ll or maim,” he asserted.

“The militarization of the police service is going to pass by. When police officers are militarized, they start to behave in such a way that they behave like they are at war.” He added

He warned that the militarization of the police could lead to increased violations of civil liberties and human rights.

“Zambia has become a battlefield now. When the police become a military unit, civil liberties are affected. People’s rights will be violated. The killing and maiming of civilians by the police will increase.” He said .

Dr. M’membe called on Zambians to pay close attention to the said  alarming trend, urging vigilance and advocacy against the further militarization of the police force.

Meanwhile Dr.  M’membe has criticized the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) over alleged collusion in the recently concluded Kawambwa by-elections.

Dr. M’membe accused the ECZ of conspiring with the UPND to manipulate the election process in their favor.

“ECZ is in cahoots with UPND. They can no longer conceal the fact that there is corroboration,” Dr. M’membe lamented.

He pointed out several irregularities that, according to him, indicate a coordinated effort to undermine the fairness of the election.

“If you scrutinize the Kawambwa by-election, the announcement on a Thursday that there will be nominations on Saturday, when Friday was a holiday, where do people get papers to be verified? Nowhere. They themselves had everything ready. They were ready for that election because they were corroborating with ECZ.” He said .

Dr. M’membe highlighted the challenges faced by opposition candidates in such an environment. “We were lucky we had a candidate who had papers ready. Otherwise, nobody would have participated in that election.” He said .

He expressed concern that the ruling party’s strategy was to ensure an uncontested win. “They wanted to go unopposed. They are eager to get every seat at any cost. They want to win every election at any cost.” He added.

Dr. M’membe has appeared before Lusaka Magistrate court for mention on an alleged charge of seditious practices .

It is alleged that on July 16, 2024, between 13:00 hours and 14:00 hours, Dr. M’membe published an article on his Twitter and Facebook pages titled “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the USD 20 Million Payout to buy Zambia’s silence.”

Police allege this was contrary to section 57(I)(C) as read with Section 60(I)(B) of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Matter has since been adjourned to 25th,26th and 27th November 2024 for trial .

SP SPEARHEADING A PEOPLE DRIVEN AGENDA

….as Zambians are resolved to vote out UPND – KASHINGA

Mufulira… Wednesday, October 30, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) Member of the Central Committee Reagan Kashinga has declared that the party is spearheading a people driven agenda aimed at making Zambia a better nation 60 years after independence.

Mr. Kashinga, who is also SP Copperbelt Provincial Vice Chairperson, said the people of Zambia are resolved to vote out the UPND regime and bring in a leadership that will promote the common good.

He noted that capitalists in the UPND Government have betrayed the forefathers by putting national and natural resources in the hands of the foreigners who were chased at Independence.

Mr. Kashinga charged that President Hakainde Hichilema’s love for foreigners and rich people at the expense of the majority suffering Zambians is alarming.

“As SP on the Copperbelt Province, we hereby thank our able members for turning out in huge numbers during our party mobilisation event held during the Independence Weekend in Mufulira District of the Copperbelt Province. The ever growing numbers of Sociality Party members, leaders and structures on the Copperbelt and beyond shows the growth of the party led by our able President, Comrade Dr. Fred M’membe,” he said.

“The efforts of the people pushing on the ground in wanting to change the government for a better Zambia cannot be ignored. We told our people in Mufulira that victory is certain in the near future as it is dark before dawn. We wish to state that SP is not for cowards. This is a people centred unstoppable revolution that will never be extinguished. There is no looking back for the Socialists,” Mr. Kashinga said.

He said SP is determined to spearhead economic freedom in Zambia.

“We want to steer economic freedom for Mother Zambia. As revolutionists, we are championing economic freedom today, tomorrow and forever for Zambia. These capitalists led by Mr. Hakainde Hichilema have failed the nation. Capitalists have betrayed our forefathers by putting our national and natural resources in the hands of the foreigners whom we chased to gain independence.

“We must regain control of our natural resources unlike what we are witnessing today with the UPND under the watch of HH. Mr. Hichilema’s love for foreigners and rich people at the expense of the majority suffering Zambians is alarming. Mr. Hichilema would rather spend more time at his rich friend’s farms as opposed to ensuring that our suffering small scale farmers have adequate inputs and on time,” Mr. Kashinga said.

He also decried the caliber of some cabinet ministers in the UPND government.

“The system is paralyzed by the UPND government and nothing is working well. Agriculture is dead, Health is nothing to talk about, Education the quality is compromised and Mining is for foreigners. In short, all ministries are dead. Honestly speaking, how can you have a minister like Paul Kabuswe, Reuben Phiri or Masebo and you expect things to move, surely? This is a regime of corrupt individuals enriching themselves as voters suffer. These are issues we have to sort out as economic freedom fighters and we shall not just sit in our comfort zone to watch these looters strip our country. The Socialist Party is here to stay.”

GOVERNMENT MUST SPEED UP AND FINISH DELIVERING INPUTS TO FARMERS ON TIME

……the Rain season is here!

Lusaka, 29th October 2024.

The United Kwacha Alliance, UKA urges government to quickly and urgently complete the delivering of inputs to all farmers and ensure that the e-voucher system is working effectively for all contracted agro dealers as committed in the last ministerial statement

This will help revamp the agriculture sector, cushion the food deficit the country has experienced for the past 3 years, allow farmers to increase their households incomes and achieve 100% food security through robust agricultural production in this farming season.

At the heart of this agricultural devastation Zambia is currently facing is the persistent challenge of load shedding, which has crippled small-scale businesses across the country. Zesco’s erratic electricity supply has not only affected the productivity of Zambian industries, but it has also had a severe knock-on effect on agriculture.

In the rural areas especially for the small-scale farmers, this means reduced yields and for commercial farmers, days lost for irrigation and systems halted. When crops fail, it is not just the farmer who suffers, the consumer too feels the weight of scarcity of food which results into higher prices for our staple food

The last season was very humiliating and the erratic rainfall patterns driven by climate change and inadequate access and distribution of affordable inputs like fertilizer in areas where the Country experienced good rains further compounded the misery of farmers and consumers across the country.

Therefore, UKA Demands government to support farmers massively this farming season as the Country anticipates good rainfall as predicted by the meteorological department for this 2024/2025 farming season.

The United Kwacha Alliance once voted into power will prioritise food security through:

1. Empowering the Small scale farmers with mechanisation and irrigation systems for all the year round agriculture production.

2. Promote the integrated market access to inputs and output markets through value addition.

3. Invest in research development and training programs of key extension workers to implement government policies effectively.

4. UKA will seek to engage and work with international and local organizations and partners and governments to seek expertise on various mechanized and sustainable agriculture development programs.

5. UKA will also reconsider allocating more resources to urgently lower food prices for consumers.

UKA strongly believes that , In the end, the seeds sown today, with the right care and investment, can bear fruit tomorrow, helping to secure a brighter, more food-secure future for Zambia. The time to act is now.

CATHOLIC CHURCH WRITES A STRONG WORDED PROTEST TO PRESIDENT HH

CATHOLIC CHURCH WRITES A STRONG WORDED PROTEST TO PRESIDENT HH

Open Letter of Protest Over Systemic Abuse of Instruments of State Violence by
Government-The Cordoning-Off of the Cathedral of the Child Jesus

It is with utter shock and dismay that we write this open letter of protest over the state’s conduct of unilaterally and forcefully cordoning-off the Cathedral of the Child Jesus on 28th October, 2024 at the occasion of honouring the legacy of the 5th Republican President of Zambia, His Excellency
Micheal Chilufya Sata, RIP.

We wish to bring to your attention this serious mischief on the part of Government aimed at intimidation by way of abuse of the instruments of State violence.

This act is an infringement on the fundamental right of worship.

When we arrived on the said morning we were greeted to a scene of heavily armed police officers with anti-riot gear who had sealed both entrances to the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in the Archdiocese of Lusaka.

Devotees who turned up for morning prayers were turned away and were also fearful of the military scene.

Your Excellency, the Cathedral is a place of worship, and what happened today is totally unacceptable for a country that professes to be a Christian nation.

We feel that this brazen act of intimidation should be cast to good conscious and brought to light.

We feel that the tendence by this Government to make an affront on the Church has become endemic and systemic, and must therefore be stopped forthwith.

We recognise that members of the Church had sought permission in the months back to host the 10th Memorial Anniversary Requiem Mass for the Fifth President, His Excellency, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata on 28th October 2024.

We also note that a similar Church Service was being held by Government at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross for the same purpose. However, this was no reason to prevent another remembrance service to be held at any other place of worship.

Despite various personal intervention by Archbishop Rev. Dr. Alick Banda, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Lusaka and lawyer Mr. John Sangwa SC, the premises remained sealed until after 09:30hrs.

Your Excellency, we wish to express our concerns with the heavy-handed approach which we witnessed today and utter disrespect shown to a sacred premises.

We feel that there is a systemic and coordinated violation of human rights by the police who have been turned into a wing and
extension of the UPND Party.

The harassment and arbitrary arrest of citizens and prolonged detention of citizens who provide checks and balances to this Government has become the norm of the day rather than an exception. In a word therefore, we are convinced that this Government
has become rogue.

Today’s events at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus are not an isolated incident but rather a coordinated scheme to intimidate the citizenry.

We end our open letter with the proverbial adage attributed to Lord Acton, the nineteenth Century English historian who states that “Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

The one who has ears, let them listen!

ZAMBIA’S DIAMOND JUBILEE- NSINGO AND YAKUFU STILL ‘FORGOTTEN’

ZAMBIA’S DIAMOND JUBILEE- NSINGO AND YAKUFU STILL ‘FORGOTTEN’.

By Gumbi Kaziguda Jele

This past Thursday, Zambia celebrated the 60th anniversary of its independence from Britain in grand style. The nation celebrated its 6 decades of ‘freedom’ under a very striking theme; “60 Years Strong: Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future”.

It cannot be denied that Zambia’s independence is a significant chapter in Africa’s history. It involved a complex interplay of local nationalist movements- definitely inspired by some notable traditional figures who shed their blood fighting for their own lands.  Ultimately with an awakened and collective mind, this gradually dismantled colonial structures to achieve independence.

But the world is yet to appreciate and know who REALLY laid the very foundation of this freedom that we are today enjoying. The first-rate cluster of our ‘jayhawkers’ remain hidden in their graves and they have one question for us as a country, “why have you forgotten us?”

60 years on and the World is yet to hear or know who really was Zambia’s guiding light of the emancipation movement. There has never been any brilliant book that details the heroism, self-sacrifice and grim determination of Prince Nsingo, son of Inyandezulu Mphezeni KaZwangendaba, the amaNgoni King. Worse still, the country is yet to honor and recognize the Ngoni royal Prince as its foremost freedom fighter.

This is worrying and needs urgent action given the brutality of Prince Nsingo’s public execution in early February, 1898. In fact unknown to many, in late January, a then 23 year old Prince Yakufu, another son of King Mphezeni was also gunned down by  the British at his Chimphinga residence. Prince Yakufu had refused to leave his own village despite being told that a force under Captain Blarke was marching there. After his assassination, the group burnt  down Chimphinga.

A week later, the very people who killed Prince Yakufu captured his older brother, Prince Nsingo who was fingered as the leader of the Ngoni forces that were fighting against British occupation of their lands. They tried him in a kangaroo court and had him executed by a firing squad on 5th February 1898. Among his 14 wives, two (Mkuchwa and Zikhalo) were also hunted down in the Vubwi valley and shot dead.
