US joins Germany in sending tanks to Ukraine as Biden hails other Western countries for assisting in war effort against Russia

0

US President, Joe Biden announced Wednesday January 25, that he plans to send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, reversing the administration’s longstanding resistance to requests from Kyiv for the highly sophisticated but maintenance-heavy vehicles.

Biden said US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recommended the tank move because it will strengthen Ukraine’s capacity to “defend its territory and achieve its strategic objectives.”

“The Abrams tanks are the most capable tanks in the world. They’re also extremely complex to operate and maintain, so we’re also giving Ukraine the parts and equipment necessary to effectively sustain these tanks on the battlefield. We’ll begin to train the Ukrainian troops on these issues of sustainment, logistics and maintenance as soon as possible,” Biden said in remarks from the White House.

The Abrams will take months to arrive, senior administration officials said, and will require extensive training for Ukrainian troops on how to operate and service them. The US must navigate complicated supply chains for the components required for the tanks.

“Delivering these tanks to the field is going to take time. Time that we’ll see and we’ll use to make sure the Ukrainians are fully prepared to integrate the Abrams tanks into their defenses,” Biden added.

As recently as last week, top US officials didn’t think that the Biden government will agree to providing the vehicles to Ukraine.

Yet after series of diplomacy with Germany, who had made clear it would only send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if the United States offered up the Abrams, Biden has given the sign-off on sending the vehicles. The 31 Abrams will form a complete Ukrainian tank battalion.

President Joe Biden said that the Ukraine Defense Contact Group members are also sending additional military equipment following their eighth meeting last week.

Biden also thanked the group of 50 nations that have so far contributed to Ukraine saying they are each making “significant contributions of their own to Ukraine’s integrity.”

“I want to thank every member of that coalition for continuing to step up,” Biden added.

He said the following countries are sending military equipment and weapons:

United Kingdom: Donating Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine.

France: Contributing AMX-10s, armored fighting vehicles and critical air defense systems.

Germany and United States: Leopard tanks and Patriot missile battery

The Netherlands: Donating a Patriot missile and launchers

Poland: Sending armored vehicles

Sweden: Donating infantry fighting vehicles

Italy: Giving artillery

Denmark and Estonia: Sending howitzers

Latvia: Providing for stinger missiles

Lithuania: Providing anti-aircraft guns

Finland: Announced its largest package of security assistance to date

Biden added, “France, Canada, the UK, Slovakia and Norway and others have all donated critical air defense systems to help secure Ukrainian skies and save the lives of innocent civilians who are literally the target — the target of Russia’s aggression.”

Female Teacher Accused of Raping 16-year-old Student In Exchange For Good Grades

0

A female teacher has been arrested after allegedly raping a student in exchange for giving him good grades.

Lena Stewart, 26, of Nixa High School in Missouri, USA, has been charged with two counts of second-degree statutory sodomy, one count of statutory rape, three counts of sexual contact with a student, and one count of sexual misconduct.

The charges relate to alleged incidents dating back to October 2022. The student was 16 at the time and the age for sexual consent in Missouri is 17.

According to investigators, the student claimed Stewart was lenient in class towards him. He claimed he did not have to do much work to receive an A and was worried his grades would drop if he didn’t comply with her sexual demands.

A police statement (identifying the student as CV) read: “CV was interviewed as the CAC during October 2022. Lena and CV arranged to meet while CV was visiting a friend for the evening. “CV told the interviewer that on two separate occasions Lena met them at their friend’s house and the two engaged in sexual contact.”

“In both instances Lena arrived in her vehicle and CV got into the vehicle with her. During the first contact, CV said the two kissed and undressed. “CV said they got uncomfortable and told Lena that they needed to go home.”

“During the second meet up, CV said they kissed, undressed, performed oral sex on each other, and engaged in sexual intercourse.”

The Nixa School District placed Stewart on administrative leave in December 2022.

Education authority spokesman Zac Rantz said in a statement:

“We learned today that charges have been filed against Lena Stewart, a teacher at Nixa High School.”

“We take any allegation of inappropriate conduct extremely seriously, so when an allegation was made in December, the district followed policy and procedure and then placed Lena Stewart on administrative leave and will continue to follow board policy and procedure when addressing this situation.”

“The district will be working with the appropriate authorities as they conduct their investigation and will cooperate fully with anything they need.”

Meta to restore Trump’s Instagram and Facebook account two years after ban

0

Facebook-parent company, Meta has said that it will restore former President Donald Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram in the coming weeks, just over two years after suspending him in the wake of the January 6 Capitol attack.

Meta made the landmark decision to bar Trump from posting on Facebook and Instagram the day after the January 6 attack, in which his supporters stormed the US Capitol in a bid to overturn the 2020 election results.

“Our determination is that the risk [to public safety] has sufficiently receded,” Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said in a blog post on Wednesday, January 25.

“As such, we will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we are doing so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.”

Trump could be suspended for as much as two years at a time for violating platform policies in the future, Clegg added.

With his Facebook and Instagram accounts reactivated, Trump will now have access to his huge and powerful communications and fundraising platforms just as he plans a third bid for the White House.

The decision, which comes months after he was unbanned by Twitter.

It is not immediately clear whether Trump return to the Meta platforms as he has snubbed Twitter to continue posting on his own social media platform, Truthsocial.

In a post on his own platform, Truth Social, Trump acknowledged Meta’s decision to reverse its suspension of his account and said “such a thing should never again happen to a sitting President, or anybody else who is not deserving of retribution.”

Although Twitter was always Trump’s preferred platform to share his mesages, he has a massive reach on Facebook and Instagram — 34 million followers and 23 million followers, respectively, ahead of his reinstatement. Previous Trump campaigns have lauded the effectiveness of Facebook’s targeted advertising tools and have spent millions running Facebook ads.

Reacting to the news, ACLU Director Anthony Romero called the decision “the right call,” joining several other groups in praising the move. He added: “The biggest social media companies are central actors when it comes to our collective ability to speak — and hear the speech of others — online. They should err on the side of allowing a wide range of political speech, even when it offends.”

Saudi bribes got Anthony Bwalya fired-sources

0

President Hakainde Hichilema was forced to fire Anthony Bwalya from State House after it was discovered that he had over US$ 600,000 in his offshore account.

The funds are believed to have been a bribe Mr. Bwalya received for facilitating an investment deal between the Zambian government and a Saudi Arabia entity.

Sources very close to Mr. Bwalya disclosed that President Hichilema was made aware of the information during his recent trip to Dubai.

“This information surfaced a few weeks ago and the President instructed that he does not want to see Anthony anywhere near him and this left Cabinet office in a limbo,” the sources said.

“Very close friends advised Tony (Anthony Bwalya) to see the President and just confess and ask for forgiveness but it was too late.”

The sources said Mr Bwalya ended up meeting Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet Oliver Kalabo seeking his intervention.

“It appears it was Mr Kalabo’s idea not to sack him him but suggested redeployment and this is how Mr Bwalya ended up being sent to Tanzania,” the source said.

And in a Facebook post, Mr Bwalya confirmed his sacking.

He has since thanked President Hichilema and the people of Zambia, for the opportunity to serve, and that he is now looking forward to the new assignment.

“We have been re – assigned to go and serve the Republic, and the people of Zambia, at our mission in Dar Es Salam, as Deputy High Commissioner. As Zambia continues to pursue our rapid economic reconstruction agenda for more jobs and business opportunities for all, we must continue to invest in mutually beneficial relationships with countries in the region and beyond,” he said.

Mr. Bwalya said the President and the new administration have made so much positive progress since assuming leadership.

“The economy is on a clear path to growth, the new CDF model is delivering phenomenal economic development possibilities and opportunities for people in the communities where they live, while thousands of our children now have a real opportunity to attain basic education – thanks to the free education policy.”

He said In order to consolidate our push to deliver improved livelihoods for all through trade and investment, we must leverage economic diplomacy to open up new markets, while expanding existing trade and investment channels with other nations.

“With Zambia being open for business, we have a duty and responsibility to identify and harvest economic opportunities present in other countries, and work towards translating these opportunities into jobs and incomes for our people here at home.”- Lusaka Times

IT IS AN EMBARRASSING DEMOTION FOR ANTHONHY BWALYA
…preserve your dignity and honour by resigning from the abuse, Brebner Changala counsels Bwalya

By New Dawn Reporter
ANTHONY Bwalya has been demoted to a rank of deputy director in a ministry from a position of deputy secretary to Cabinet, Human Rights and Good Governance promoter Brebner Changala has said.

Changala says although the demotion is embarrassing and at the same time sad, it was expected looking at how the UPND administration was working.

He said Bwalya was the first Presidential Spokesperson to be demoted in an embarrassing manner.

“The demotion of Anthony Bwalya is very sad although expected. This is the first Presidential aid, a Presidential spokesperson who never became one, he became an occasional assistant to the President as when the President felt that. Now sending him to Tanzania as a deputy high commissioner, is a demotion plus plus in which they have embarrassed him, it is an abuse of trust in a man that was loyal and exhibited loyalty,” Changala said.

Changala revealed that Bwalya while at State House, he defended even things he did not understand or knew anything about in order to protect the President.

He has since urged Bwalya to search his soul and reflect on his dignity and future, saying even if there were no jobs on the street, dignity and preservation character which was extremely important.

“He defended things he literally knew nothing about. But my call and advise to Anthony Bwalya is that I know that there are no jobs in the country, preserve the character by simply resigning from that new position which is equivalent to a deputy director in a ministry. I know the fear of coming to the street where there are no jobs, but I want to assure you with one thing that there is dignity and honour on the street, there is self-preservation on the street, you control yourself, your destiny and you reorganize yourself and defend what you stand for,” he said.

Changala said Bwalya’s stay at State House was highly questionable as his welcome was cosmetic.

He said the only way Bwalya would keep his character and dignity high, is by resigning his new position.

“Your stay at State House was open to all see that your welcome was cosmetic and abuse. You have been kicked out swallow your pride and get back to the street because going to Tanzania as deputy High Commissioner, you will be rendering yourself useless to this abuse. The position Anthony held at State House is equivalent to deputy secretary to cabinet but now to go to the level of deputy director in a ministry not even a director is a serious demotion with a man who has not committed an offense, he should not accept this new appointment for whatever reason because it is a demotion,” said Changala.

Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa this morning, informed the nation that Bwalya is no longer President Hakainde Hichilema’s spokesperson and subsequently has been removed from State House and demoted to the position of deputy high commissioner to Tanzania with immediate effect.

I HAVE BEEN VINDICATED – MONDE

….over 10 years ago, I told colleagues in UPND that HH would never deliver as Head of State, they doubted

Lusaka, Wednesday, January 25, 2023 ( Smart Eagles )

Zambia has a bad driver in office and he will soon lead us into an accident, Patriotic Front Presidential candidate Greyford Monde has said.

Hon Monde said this when he featured on United Voice Radio Programme today in reference to President Hakainde Hichilema’s style of leadership

He said in as much as he would want President Hichilema to succeed, one year Five months is enough time for one to see that he has lamentably failed based on the Promises.

“Let’s rate them in terms of the ECONOMY, it is so bad. They Promised Cheaper Fuel, can we give them a tick on cost of fuel?, it has become expensive. In the energy sector, We have loadshedding and Zesco has increased the connection fees. That is killing people who would want to set up businesses. They promised us Cheaper mealie meal prices , it is now over K260. In my view he is a bad driver. We have gotten to the point where he has started off, but his driving is very shaky,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hon Monde has vowed never to work under the UPND Administration owing to differences in beliefs.

He said he believes in Pro poor policies while the UPND are capitalists.

“President Hichilema believes in running Government like a Business. It is not correct to run Government like a business. Government draws its resources from the Citizens. If u want to run as a business, don’t get money from tax payers because they would want to get services at a cheaper price, but they are not getting that,” he said.

On the much talked about CDF, Hon Monde bemoaned how the people are Hoodwinked.

“In my view, they have done certain things right, but on others they have not. Look at that CDF, it has now become Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health. Anything you want they point at CDF. It is a way of Hoodwinking the people,” he said.

He Said he feels vindicated that what he said about President Hakainde Hichilema not being capable of performing 10 years ago is now coming to pass.

It’s A Lie, I Have Never Differed With Edgar Lungu- Brian Mundubile

IT’S A LIE, I HAVE NEVER DIFFERED WITH ECL

…I have a lot of respect for him – Hon Mundubile

Lusaka… Wednesday, January 25, 2023 (Smart Eagles)

PF presidential hopeful Hon Brian Mundubile has dispelled rumors that he and former president Dr Edgar Lungu have differed.

Hon Mundubile said he looks at the former Head of State who he holds in high esteem as his father.

The potential PF president said the rumor of him and the former president differing is being spread by the same people who in the first place lied that Hon Mundubile was just fronted by the former Head of State.

“He (President Lungu) is the former president of this country and the president of our party. He must be respected by all. I speak to him from time to time almost every day. Initially there was a story to say he has been fronted by President Lungu,” he said.

“The same people were very unhappy that Mundubile was just a front, it’s the same people now who are very upset now that Mundubile has differed with president Lungu. So you can see the hypocricy there. So the correct position is that president Lungu remains my father and that I will continue to respect and hold him in very high esteem.”

Hon Mundubile said he would defend President Lungu at any time should someone attack him.

“Myself as Brian Mundubile will defend at any time of the day should he be attacked by anyone. he deserves the respect from all Zambians. He did so much for this country and he needs to be protected. So the stories that are going round that Mundubile and the former President differed are not true,” he said.

“If I did anything wrong he will just call me and tell me… that is the kind of relationship that I have with him. I am not his equal, if we differ he just calls me. But so that there has been nothing like that and whenever I have a chance I speak with him. And where he needs to guide whether at family level, party level, he has been able to guide.”

A Lot Of Us Bembas Are Useful Idiots, Who Are Used And Discraded Dregs- Chilufya Tayali

0

A LOT OF US BEMBAS ARE USEFUL IDIOTS, WHO ARE USED AND DISCRADED DREGS
By EEP President Chilufya Tayali

This is an insult to Anthony Bwalya which he should have rejected, but then….., how would he survive, he needs the job.

A Presidential Spokesperson is at the level of Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, which is above Permanent Secretaries, but he has been dropped to a position of Deputy High Commissioner, which is at the level of Deputy Director in Govt.

All Ambassadors and High Commissioners report to Permanent Secretaries at Ministry of Foreigner Affairs. Below the PS, there are Directors then Deputy Directors, in which category Anthony now falls.

I have been saying it here, that Anthony was not respected at State House, the man was undermined and undesired, which is why, he was often out of State House hooping from one media house to the next lying on behalf of the President.

The hierarchy at State House is so disjointed, that you can’t tell who is senior because it is dependent on which tribe you speak.

Anthony spirited fought for UPND whilst in opposition and it was like a well deserving appointment when he took the office of Presidential Spokesperson, in spite of not having the traditional prerequisite qualifications as a journalist.

After that, the man was a hallmark of President Hichilema’s lies which he defend with such venom to kill hundred opposition elephants.

This is what most of us Bembas (say whatever you want, Bembas are gifted in talking, and you know it) are good at, defending or speaking for others who just use us. Anthony has been used and dumped.

Pilato landed that job because of his mouth and he has been silenced to oppose President Hichilema (he has a bone in his mouth) but it won’t be long before he is kicked out.

Unfortunately, even big people that have gone high in this Country just never stop wiggling tails like puppies before their masters.

Look at how Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba humiliates himself defending wrong things hoping for kibbles (dog food). He has such a bad traits of appeasing those in authority by bending the truth as if he is not a Pastor for personal aggrandizement.

The same goes to our current Vice President, her job is to defend lies of President Hichilema in parliament in spite of being a Bishop’s wife.

Zambia a Christian nation with many big titled Christians yet bufi nipamushi.

Truth be told, most of us from the Bemba clans are useful idiots to be used by others and they dump us at their convenience.

Bulanda bushala, umwaice wandi Anthony can’t do anything but to accept the job, otherwise kuti achula. Temulandu mwaice wandi, kabiye.

I will talk more at 20:00hrs.

OCiDA NOT POLITICAL…we’re not there to embarrass anyone publicly, says Leslie Mbula

0

OCiDA NOT POLITICAL
…we’re not there to embarrass anyone publicly, says Mbula

By Kombe Chimpinde Mataka

Former secretary to cabinet Leslie Mbula says OCiDA will not entertain political statements meant to embarrass people.
Divisions have emerged in Our Civic Duty Association (OCiDA) after its chairman Telesphore Mpundu issued a state of the nation statement in which he has among other things warned the new dawn administration that a hungry people is an angry people.
“We have noted a worrying tendency by those in authority to heap praise on themselves whenever an opportunity presents itself and to explain away problems they cannot resolve by blaming the previous administration. This reflects a lack of decency and respect for the people. We all know that the country was in bad hands, and this explains why Zambians voted for change in August 2021. What the people now wish to see and hear from their elected leaders are solutions to their myriad of problems; it is to see the implementation of the many promises that were made by those in power today when they were in opposition. We have had enough of blaming the PF for the last one year plus four months,” said emeritus Archbishop Mpundu. “The current administration won power on a series of promises that included reducing the cost of living and tackling youth unemployment. Unfortunately, the cost of living has risen considerably in the past one year plus four months with no discernible plan in sight on how to reduce it. People in our communities are very hungry. They are struggling to feed themselves and their families. We want to remind this administration that a hungry people is an angry people. You need not be reminded what caused the French Revolution!”

But some board of trustee members have insisted that the statement which has been issued in the name of its board of trustees chairman did not have the blessings of all the members of the board.
Earlier on Thursday, OCiDA member Brebner Changala revealed that there were divisions in OCIDA as some members felt they could not hold the new dawn administration to account.
Addressing journalists at Kapingila House, Changala explained that Archbishop Mpundu had received information the day he was to address the media not to go ahead.

“I must confess and this cancellation is a testimony, we are divided. There is a group of senior members that thinks that we cannot hold the new dawn administration to account for their own reasons and then there are some of us who have seen the shortcomings and have risen to the day that let’s speak about the challenges we face today. OCiDA might not be the same from today,” he noted. “We were geared, the bishop is ready to speak to you, he had a statement… We are in a scenario where the bishop was supposed to speak and he’s a friend of the system. At the time PF was in power he was outspoken and he spoke for justice as he always does. The main challenge that he wanted to come out is that the new dawn government – the President inclusive – are beyond access. Nobody can access the President for various reasons. When OCiDA was formed, it was formed as a civic organisation that will fight for various interests in the country. It has come to pass that some members of OCiDA have indeed arrived and they do think OCiDA should not hold this government to account for many challenges that they face… so, other trusties at the last minute decided to pull out and leave the bishop a lone ranger.”

But Mbula, who is one of those opposed, said in an interview with The Mast that OCiDA was not a political party.
“It does not pursue any political agenda. It is an association which looks at the governance, which looks at how things are happening in the country. And as an association, we are not there to embarrass anyone publicly. We are supposed to have meetings to discuss issues. Now the thing is when that statement was prepared, we had no knowledge of it. So we objected to it being issued until we have the opportunity to study it; discuss it so that whatever is issued is a shared view. So we objected and it did not come out,” said Mbula who is also former Zambia’s high commissioner to South Africa. “That statement which is out has no backing of OCiDA. That is why the chairman did not issue it. That statement has no backing of Our Civic Duty Association. I want to clarify, this is why the chairman did not issue that statement. All of us objected to it because we had not discussed it before. That document is not ours.”

MONDE EXPLAINS WHY CDF UNDER UPND IS A FAILED PROJECT…tips citizens that the New Dawn used CDF to hoodwink them

MONDE EXPLAINS WHY CDF UNDER UPND IS A FAILED PROJECT

…tips citizens that the New Dawn used CDF to hoodwink them

Lusaka, Wednesday, January 25, 2023 ( Smart Eagles )

PF Presidential Hopeful Hon Greyford Monde has mocked the “methodical” Hakainde Hichilema led UPND administration over its failed CDF.

Hon Monde revealed that the New Dawn Administration is hoodwinking citizens using the said funds.

He told Zambians that the current administration can increase the CDF even up to K200 million knowing very well that it will not be implemented.

The potential PF leader however said the UPND are giving the PF chance to bounce back in 2026 due to the way they have handled the CDF and other national pertinent issues.

He said this when he featured on United Voice Radio today.

“This year, that is when they will start spending that CDF for 2022. They will finish spending it in 2023. So when are they going to receive the CDF for 2023, the one that is K28 million? So if you are working with a person who thinks Zambians are not seeing what is happening, this is what you experience,” he said.

“So the CDF for 2022 will be utilized up to 2023. The one for 2024, you will see that, in any case…look, last year they did not even finish paying the K25 million. If you are budgeting and you are really a business man, will you increase when you have failed to deliver on K25 million?”

He said instead of increasing the money allocated to the CDF, the New Dawn Government needed to be practical around the initiative.

“You are not supposed to increase; you are supposed to leave it static or drop it because there has been a problem for you to give out the money. So you fail to give K25 million in 2022, you are giving in 2023 and in 2023 you fail to say we have failed, therefore we have reviewed,” he said.

“We are bringing it down or we are maintaining, then you increase to K28 million. You know what will happen in 2024? They will increase it to K50 million because they know they will not deliver it in 2024. They will not even implement it because it will go into 2025. In 2025 they will even increase it to K200 million but in real terms they are not even being implemented.”

Hon Monde said the UPND have not done any fruitful project under the CDF.

“So for me, Zambians are seeing and they are watching. At the end of the day they will say ah they (PF) built these clinics in five years in our constituency…. these (UPND) have not even rehabilitated any, they haven’t worked on the roads. This is for PF, that is for PF, they need to come back to power. That is how we are going to come back. These are helping us to come back,” he said.

He slammed the UPND for the way they are using the CDF.

Hon Monde explained most of the projects that UPND have put under the CDF are supposed to be handled in the budget.

“You know what has happened to CDF? This is hoodwinking the Zambians. That CDF has now become funding for the Ministry of Home a
Affairs, that CDF has become Ministry of Community Development, Ministry of Health, all the government sectors, anything you want in your Constituency today, CDF. A bridge is falling, CDF…you know what CDF is? It’s supposed to be like impress. Here, you’ve got impress, just in case you’ve got a problem,” he said.

“Because you know that a national budget is planned from a constituency. In a constituency, you have got 50 schools. You know that this school needs renovation. So what do you do? Put it in the budget… you will hear that in the Ministry of education, we have 1,000 schools to rehabilitate. It is not by guessing. Those schools have been registered by the constituencies they are coming from. Now in this government, all of that is under CDF. Is it good management or bad management? It is bad management.”

He explained that the mighty PF managed to cover all the projects that it spread across all corners of the country using the national budget.

“As PF, we would cover all this in budget. By the end of the year, you go into the constituency and ask them how much in real terms have you received from government? You will find that they have received even K200 million through fixing bridges, paying social cash transfer, renovating clinics…That is why you saw, this is year two they are running with that same CDF. Ask yourself a question, what major developments have you seen in constituencies? Have you seen roads being done, have you seen bridges?”

“So at the end of the day when you sit down and calculate you realize no, we are actually hoodwinked. So that I can tell you, it’s not even a good thing. If they want to increase the CDF, let them also increase the amount of money they are going to take to these constituencies. It can’t be CDF only. Constituencies are very big. So when you are going to rate them after five years you will realize that even if they increase CDF to K100 million, if that is the only money going into the constituencies, then there is a problem,” he said.

Ghanaian Side Chick Sues Her ‘Sugar Daddy’ Over Failed Promises; Demands Car, Cash And 2 Years Rent

A Ghanaian sidechic has sued a bank manager, who she claims was her lover, for allegedly breaching an agreement to take care of her.

Deborah Seyram Adablah dragged the Director of Finance of First Atlantic Bank, Ernest Kwasi Nimako, to the Accra High Court, and he is expected to appear before Friday, January 27, 2023.

In a suit dated January 23, 2023, Deborah contends that her ‘sugar daddy’ who was also her boss, agreed to buy her a car, pay for her accommodation for three years, give her a monthly stipend of GH¢3,000, marry her after divorcing his wife and also give her a lump sum to start a business.

In her writ of summons and statement of claims which has since gone viral on social media, Deborah alleges that the ‘sugar daddy’ bought the car but registered it in his name.

Later, he denied her access to use it after about a year of enjoying the Honda Civic worth GH¢120,000, while he also paid for only one year of accommodation.

The plaintiff, whose national service period ended in July 2021, admits to being in a relationship with the married man, claiming that her happiness at the workplace was under threat had she failed to give in to the relationship.

Deborah has also accused the defendant of abuse, sexual harassment, maltreatment, exploitation and also lowering her reputation.

She further states that she had turned down an opportunity to be a permanent staff after her national service due to the manager’s promise of making life comfortable for her.

Deborah revealed that her boss further promised to divorce his wife and marry her because his marriage had broken down beyond repairs.

But in July 2022, their relationship suffered a blow when the first defendant decided to stop paying her rent and also providing other benefits he promised her.

This compelled her to sue her former boss for breach of contract.

On this basis, the plaintiff is seeking an order from the court directed at the defendant to fulfil all promises, including payment of lump sum to help her start a business to take care of herself. Below is a list of her demands:

Transfer the title of the car into her name.

Cost of repairs of 10,000gh.

Pays lump sum money to enable her to start a business.

Pays remaining 2 years’ rent.

Pays the outstanding arrears of her monthly allowance from July 2022 to the date of judgment and pays all medical expenses as a result of side effects.

General damages against her.

Any other relief(s) the court deems necessary including legal costs.

The First Atlantic Bank, which was joined in the suit, has been accused of allowing senior officers to enter into relationships with unwilling subordinates while using the females as baits to win customers for the company.

Solution To Zambia’s Economic Difficulties Doesn’t Lie In Imf, Argues M’membe

SOLUTION TO ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES DOESN’T LIE IN IMF, ARGUES M’MEMBE

Socialist Party (SP) president Fred M’membe says those in power today should not blame anyone for the political fallout that is coming as a result of implementing a “dreadful IMF deal”.

He says the lasting solution to Zambia’s economic difficulties does not lie in the IMF.

Dr M’membe said the government was warned that it was just a matter of time before Zambians realised that there is no future in the past as IMF has not worked for the country.

“Those in power today should not blame anyone for the political fallout that is surely coming as a result of implementing a dreadful IMF deal. They made a lot of noise about the IMF loan. They sang hymns of self-praise for securing the bailout and attempt to drive out any reasonable voice that warned about the adverse consequences of the deal,” Dr M’membe said.

“We warned that it was just a matter of time before Zambians would realise that there is no future in the past. We have been on this route before and it has not worked for us. It is not the first time Zambia has gone to the IMF.”

He recalled that UNIP under Kenneth Kaunda and the MMD under Frederick Chiluba went to the IMF which exposed the country’s incapacity to govern itself.

“UNIP under president Kenneth Kaunda went to the IMF in the 1980s though KK was quick to abandon the Bretton Wood institution after they failed to answer his famous question: ‘are you able to design a programme that will not require me to kill my own people?” he noted.

“The MMD under Frederick Chiluba went to the IMF in the 1990s. The MMD under Levy Mwanawasa went to the IMF in the early 2000s. Where have all these previous IMF deals left Zambia? They have simply exposed our incapacity as a people to govern ourselves.”

Dr M’membe wondered if it made sense for the country to subcontract the running of the country’s economy to the IMF after gaining independence.

“The greatest beneficiaries of IMF bailout programmes in Zambia are usually the same forces: Western companies, South African finance capital and the local businessmen connected to those in power,” he said.

“These forces are usually the ones who buy our state-owned enterprises at cheaper rates on the pretext that they are making losses. It is not different this time. The poor are been hit hard. The workers are being hit hard. Our people are crying for help.”

Dr M’membe recalled that when in opposition, UPND told people that the reason state enterprises were making loses was because of political interference.

“Companies that even Chiluba refused to privatise under any circumstances such as ZAMTEL and Zesco are this time likely to be sold to their business associates or the western firms. For years, those in power today told us when they were in opposition that they are very good at business; that the reason why state enterprises make losses is because of political interference from the ruling party and the politicians in power,” he said.

“Now that they are in power themselves, what will be their excuse for selling state enterprises since all they need to do is stop interfering in the operations of Zesco or ZAMTEL and appoint competent people who can run such companies professionally and like private entities?”

He reiterated that the lasting solution to Zambia’s economic difficulties does not lie in the IMF but in the collection of fair and adequate revenue from the mining sector.

“But those in power today are quicker to listen to the IMF and remove subsidies on farming inputs even when the US and other Western countries still subsidise their own agriculture industry,” said Dr M’membe.

“We repeat: the lasting solution to Zambia’s economic difficulties does not lie in the IMF. It lies in the collection of fair and adequate revenue from the mining sector for support to secondary industries such as manufacturing. It lies in the development of the arts, a hugely important industry that those in power today have reduced to a footnote in a ministry! It lies in increased state investment to social sectors such as education and health.”

HH-You are only a pawn in their game

By Hon. Bowman Chilosha Lusambo

On a Chess board, pawns are the most valueless pieces, whose primary function is to protect the more-valuable soldiers. Pawns are moved here and there by the hand that moves them. Chess is a strategy game involving white pieces and black pieces. What we have seen play out in the recent few months regarding the Zambia debt restructuring process is a typical game of Chess between western countries led by the US against China with Zambia and President Hakainde Hichilema as pawns. What happened right before our eyes the last 48 Hours since Secretary Yellen and Ms. Georgieva had been in Lusaka is the tipping point after one of the players realised that they are ultimately losing this game.

The Lusaka trip by Secretary Yellen and Ms. Georgieva was a mere shadow boxing stunt aimed at showing China that the US and its partners like the IMF are Zambia’s true friends. In doing that, they started poking China right in its nose by accusing it of delaying Zambia’s debt talks.

The two ladies, in their desperate attempts to win this Chess game threw all diplomatic etiquette out of the window and bashed China using their own friendly Journalists they travelled with to Lusaka. One doesn’t need to be a student of political history to understand that this is part of a global geopolitical shift that is taking place as China asserts itself on the global stage.

The reaction from the two ladies was choreographed and firmly scripted in Washington and Lusaka merely provided a perfect playground.

In all this, Zambia and President Hichilema are mere pawns on a Chess board and as a Zambian, this is what is most disconcerting about this whole saga. In his naivety and thick headedness, President Hichilema has allowed himself to be used as an accessory in the West’s selfish agenda against China.

At 10 months in office, we advised President Hichilema to undertake a trip to China and reengage with our friends if his economic transformation agenda is to bear fruits. With almost 20 months in office now, he has undertaken three trips to Washington and none to Beijing. A quick analysis of Zambia’s debt profile shows that it should be a no brainer for President Hichilema to be more China leaning but he has wasted a lot of precious time pandering to the whims of the boys and girls at the IMF while the Zambian economy deteriorates.

For a man who postulates to be smarter than all of us put together, the manner in which President Hichilema has demonstrated the lack of capacity to understand this straightforward matter is outstanding. We wish to remind President Hichilema is that the G20 Common Frame work was premised on transparency, burden sharing and mutual respect which the boys and girls in Washington have never demonstrated towards China. We also wish to remind him without China on the table, there will be no debt restructuring and without it, this economy will be chocked and will never take off.

To President Hichilema, it is now time to reset our relations with China. Even in kindergarten, we are taught to pick our friend’s well. China has demonstrated throughout our history that it is a good friend to have. It is time to put Zambia’s interests first and end this Chess game.

Mother recounts how neighbour sodomised her autistic son

A MOTHER of Lusaka’s Chunga compound has narrated to the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court of how her neighbour had anal sex with her autistic son.

This is in a matter were Peter Jere, is accused of unnatural offences.

Jere 27, is on March 4, 2022 alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a boy under the age of 10 against the order of nature.

Testifying before magistrate, the 39-year-old mother narrated that whilst she was attending to her business she repeatedly received phone calls from her eldest son to which she got worried and rushed home.

She said when she got home her son could not tell her what was wrong despite giving her distress calls earlier.

“I proceeded to the living room were I found my autistic son drowned in tears. I asked him why he was crying and he told me that Jere who is usually referred to as Manyoyi, stripped him naked and had anal sex with him. My child told me it was painful and when I checked his anus I noticed it was swollen and red,” the victim’s mother said.

She told the Court that Jere sodomized her son in his bedroom and in an unfinished church building near Zambeef after he took him at 15:00 hours but after he relieved his sexual urge, the boy took a solo journey home at 18:00 hours.

The witness said she reported the matter to Chunga police were she was issued a police medical report and took the child to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) were he was examined and he was administered Prep by medical personnel.

She said medical personnel did not give her test results as she was told she would access them at the police but when she went to the police station she was told she would access the results at court.

The witness added that Jere’s mother went to plead with her and not to get her son arrested as he allegedly has a terminal illness and he would suffer if he was sent to jail.

“The accused was arrested at my house when he came with his mother to apologize and plead with me not to have him arrested,” said the witness.

Summary Dismissal- Dickson Jere

Summary Dismissal
By Dickson Jere

The assistant shop manager at Food Lovers Market was instantly dismissed for alleged unauthorized disclosure of company information. Since the offence was punishable by summary dismissal, he was not formally charged or made to appear before the disciplinary committee but was fired instantly.

He sued the company in the High Court. His argument was primarily that he was not accorded an opportunity to be heard and that he did not commit the said offence.

The High Court ruled in his favour and awarded him 24 months of his salaries as damages, which is way beyond normal damages awarded in employment cases. The reason for the huge damages was that finding jobs was difficult in Zambia.

Food Lovers Market appealed against the Judgement in the Court of Appeal and the three-member panel of judges had to decide on what summary dismissal means and the procedures to be followed by the company in summary dismissal cases.

“Summary dismissal should therefore, be understood to refer to the power bestowed upon the employer to instantly dismiss an employee following adherence to the disciplinary process as set out in the employer’s disciplinary code or rules,” the Court ruled, which comprised of Judges Chashi, Siavwapa and Banda-Bobo.

“Once this procedure has been followed there is no requirement for the employer to give notice or payment in lieu of notice,” the panel opined, adding that an employee does not need to be given notice (common three months) when he has committed an offence punishable by summary dismissal.

However, when the employee has admitted committing the offence, there is no need to follow the entire disciplinary process. In this case, the manager had denied wrongdoing and therefore should have been subjected to the due process.

The Judges added that the “absence of a formal charge and opportunity to be heard” was not accorded to the dismissed manager and therefore there was no reason to disagree with the High Court.

On the 24 months salaries award for damages, the Court of Appeal stated as follows;

“We are satisfied that this was an appropriate case for the learned judge to depart from normal measure of damages and the award of 24 months salaries is not excessive….” The Judges said.

This is a must read case for Human Resource and Industrial Psychology Practitioners as well as Employment and Labour Relations lawyers and students.

NAWAKWI WONDERS WHETHER YELLEN, GEORGIEVA VISIT IS PRIVATE TO HICHILEMA … saying they should have engaged opposition and visited Chibolya to see squalor

FDD leader Edith Nawakwi says she is wondering whether the IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva and United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s are private visitors to President Hakainde Hichilema and his government or the people of Zambia, saying they should have found time to engage with the opposition and other stakeholders including taking visits to Chibolya, Kalikiliki Compounds and Lusaka’s Central Business district to see the squalor ordinary people are living through.

Speaking with Daily Revelation, Nawakwi said the western leaders should have also visited the local clinics and hospitals within the limitations of their time.

“So they came here for PR exercise to be seen to give condolences to the dying UPND, and if those in UPND are excited that Yellen came so be it. This is the usual PR western leaders do and it finds home to naïve leaders on the continent,” Nawakwi said. “Two days ago there was a news item of two babies dying in Nangoma in incubators and following that there is this glee from the minister that Zesco has installed a standby genset, and the MP for the area and the minister are speaking with glee without any recourse to the two children who died in incubators.”

Nawakwi accused the IMF and their associates of funning civil strife in the country by not helping to address the problems the country was going through.

“If Zambians should take the 1987 food riots, it will fall squarely on Hakainde and those two ladies because they came here not to help Zambia but to concretise their business. And it’s a very naïve and an initiated leader who goes to bed with the Americans. I always say look at the Tanzanians for the simple reason that the leader there is a woman. She is talking to China and India and there is a $3 billion pledge from that country. But a naïve leader here says he wants to get $1 billion from the IMF. It’s a joke actually,” Nawakwi said. “Here is a leader who starts exporting our maize without doing clear… http://dailyrevelationzambia.com/nawakwi-wonders-whether-yellen-georgieva-visit-is-private-visit-to-hichilema-saying-they-should-have-engaged-opposition-and-visited-chibolya-to-see-squalor/

Hichilema Is A Hypocrite, Must Apologise To Former President Lungu- Nasson Msoni

HICHILEMA IS A HYPOCRITE, MUST APOLOGISE TO FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU -NASSON MSONI
By New Dawn Reporter
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema is a hypocrite who is now abusing public resources and Zambians should rise and hold him to accountable, All Peoples Congress (APC) leader Nasson Msoni has charged.

Msoni who is a member of the UPND – Alliance is of the view that the same measure President Hichilema used to condemn former president Edgar Chagwa Lungu should be the same scale to measure his international trips he is making.

“It is totally and completely hypocritical for Mr Hichilema to be doing the exact opposite or the same thing that he had previously criticised his predecessor of doing on the frequency of international travels,” he said.

The outspoken alliance partner said he was not criticising President Hichilema out8 of bitterness but his hypocritical behaviour.
“The rationale of criticism is that we will do things differently and behave differently. In a nutshell the public must now hold Mr Hichilema to his own words and behaviour and to his own words that he had previously used against former president Edgar Lungu. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander,” Msoni said.

He said it was now clear that President Hichilema doesn’t mean well for Zambia and its citizens as he was now abusing public resources for his unending fruitless trips he was making since forming government.

Msoni has since urged President Hichilema to apologise to former President Lungu for condemning him over the foreign trips he made.
He said looking at the behaviour of President Hichilema,it is clear that he envied the trips and flying around the former President made then.

“Undoubtedly Mr Hichilema is now abusing public resources and as such must be held accountable. Zambia will not be built on double standards and hypocrisy. Undoubtedly Mr Hichilema owes Mr Lungu an apology for his needless criticism on his international travels. It is this kind behaviour and conduct that is undermining public confidence in the entire political leadership in the country,” said Msoni.

PULL UP YOUR SOCKS…Zambians will keep quiet until election day, Bob Sichinga warns UPND

PULL UP YOUR SOCKS…Zambians will keep quiet until election day, Sichinga warns UPND

By Fanny Kalonda

DO the right thing, acknowledge when the mistakes have been made, former commerce minister Bob Sichinga has told the UPND.

“So I am afraid I have to say to my colleagues, sorry, pull up your socks. Do the right thing, acknowledge when the mistakes have been made. Whatever mistakes UPND makes or PF makes, it hurts people. It hurts citizens. This must be understood by all political parties including my own. It is very important to understand that you are running a country, you are not running a business. Your personal business you can do as you please. This is a country which is governed by laws, by rules, procedures and the processes that have to go in there. You cannot say because I want it this way, I will do it my way, no!” he warned. “UPND is no different, it is just another party in office. They must also abide by the promises they made. The Zambian people are very very good people, very calm. They will keep quiet until election day. Did they not show PF?”

Sichinga said there is nobody sitting and wishing UPND to fail and “that is why issues like shortage of medicines in health centres, delay in the distribution of farming inputs among other shortcomings are being brought out”.

Featuring on KBN TV’s State of the Nation programme, Sichinga said if the government wants to be methodical it should explain to the public what their method is.

“Many of us are raising this because we want this government to succeed. I want you to understand that, I want the viewers to understand that. There is nobody sitting there and wishing UPND to fail. I have spent a lot of time building UPND. I was its vice president for economy and politics. You must understand that after 23 years of struggle, we are now here, we want this government to succeed,” he said. “The question is that how do we make it succeed. The how question you know as a country we are so full of rhetoric. Right! We talk about platitudes without looking at how do we physically do it. How do we practically survive that. The problem of power is not a UPND problem, it has not started now…”

Sichinga said if the government says it is going to be methodical, it should be methodical and not say one thing and mean something else.

He said the country needs to understand what is going on.

“We are now asking them what is the method? Share with us. If it is methodical, tell us how methodical you are being. What is it that you have looked at? How have you analysed this problem? That’s what we do, planning in business,” Sichinga said. “This is why I am saying if you have to be methodical, you have to give a statement and say ‘as minister of energy, this is our plan’. Not to start telling us we are going to start building a pipeline from Angola. How long does it take to build a pipeline?” he asked. “So what I am saying is that if you say you are going to be methodical, be methodical. Dont say one thing and then mean something else. We need to know. The business community needs to know. If I am not saying it, who should say it – PF? It doesn’t matter which party is in office, the right things must be done. A nation comes before a political party.”

Sichinga called on the government to “pull up your socks”.

“There seems to be an attitude in our party suggesting that everybody that talks about anything, to criticise the government, however constructive it might be is wrong and we never seem to acknowledge the fact that we are failing to deliver on our promises,” he noted. “And this is disappointing because then you cannot build trust. You cannot build the trust of the people when they go to the hospital and know the medicines are not there. Why is it taking their Vice-President to go round the hospitals to check if the medicines are there if they are confident and the Minister of Health is so confident that medicines are in hospitals? Why does the Vice-President have to do that? Why is the Vice-President doing that?. You know you can cheat people up to a certain point, but you can’t cheat all the people all the time. It just doesn’t happen. The best thing is if it has not been done right, it is to turn to the people and acknowledge and say, ‘yes there is a problem here’.”

Sichinga said parliament cannot tell lies about the lack of medicines as it is an oversight organ.

“So I am afraid I have to say to my colleagues, sorry, pull up your socks. Do the right thing, acknowledge when the mistakes have been made. That is the right way and that is how you create confidence. It is evident, you can’t have the medical association saying that there are no medicines, the committee of parliament saying so. Parliament oversees the Cabinet, many people do not seem to realise that. They are an oversight organ,” he said.

“So they can’t say parliament is telling lies because we have medicines because that’s what that suggests so as far as am concerned. This is incorrect and I have to say, I am going to believe in the committee of parliament because I know how they work.”

Sichinga said concern about food insecurity in the country is real following the delay in distribution of farming inputs, especially fertiliser.

“I was minister of agriculture and livestock and therefore I am speaking from knowledge, I am speaking from the experience. The government, the Cabinet, the President and the ministers never came back to tell the people what the problem was. What was the issue and worse still the price at which this material was procured. In my opinion, it was excessive and I give you the example of Russia because it is the cheapest source,” he said. “Having arrived late means, as I am talking to you now, basal dressing is being distributed to the farmers now. This is January, it is passed mid-January, you are delivering basal, Compound D. It is supposed to be now Urea, that is supposed to be going in right now. So that in itself will have a bearing on the growth of the crop. Hence the issue of concern about the possibility of not being able to make the quantities that are being sought because we are dependent on that fertiliser to give us a higher yield per acre of per hectare. That concern about food insecurity is real. It is real because as to what extent depends on several other factors.”

Sichinga said there is need to understand that “you are running a country, you are not running your personal business where you can do as you please”.

“Whatever mistakes UPND makes or PF makes, it hurts people. It hurts citizens. This must be understood by all political parties including my own. It is very important to understand that you are running a country. You are not running a business. Your personal business you can do as you please. This is a country which is governed by laws, by rules, procedures and the processes that have to go in there. You cannot say because I want it this way, I will do it my way. No, you can’t! That’s not how a country is run,” said Sichinga. “UPND is no different, it is just another party in office. They must also abide by the promises they made. The Zambian people are very peaceful people. The Zambian people are very very good people, very calm. They will keep quiet until election day. Did they not show PF? They did.”

Ukutwala ubufi naku basungu! Umweni akaya!- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Ukutwala ubufi naku basungu! Umweni akaya!

As USA, IMF and President Hakainde Hichilema seek a solution to the debt crisis, all eyes are on China, which is the single largest creditor to Zambia’s $14.8billion external debt.

So If China is key to unlocking the work of the creditors’ committee to restructure and obtain possibe debt forgiveness, why is it being attacked without provocation?

The shocking statement by President Hakainde Hichilema that the apetite to obtain these loans was driven by corruption is not true and is actually regretable.
The loan facilities extended to Africa were done under the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Further President Xi Jinping developed one of the most ambitious foreign policy intitiatives- the Belt and Road(BRI). Since 2013, the programme became the centerpiece of Xi Jinping’s reign for expansion, especially in Africa, and a defining policy of his first term.

This infrastructure-driven strategy saw a Belt and Road Initiative presence in nearly 138 countries that included Zambia.

Zambia was a mere beneficiary of financial facilities negotiated under the umbrella of the Africa Union/China Cooperation.

China offered preferential loans and export credit lines at every FOCA Meeting with the 2015 Johannesburg Meeting getting pledges of $60billion extended to Africa and another $60billion at the 2018 Beijing Meeeting.

To this effect, Zambia has since built schools. It built iver 110 new secondary schools and expanded by 14,000 new classrooms.

New hospitals; health centres, clinics, district hospitals, mini hospitals, teaching hospitals and nursing and midwifery schools were buuilt. Government also built new roads, bridges, and international airports. Dams and power stations were built that saw an increase in power generation capacity from 1,600 megawatts to 3,500 megawatts.

To therefore hear President Hakainde Hichilema claim that this policy was driven by corruption is sad and clearly a case of display of ignorance of international proportion. These were international programmes that Zambia tapped into.

These insults and diplomatic gaffes will not help Zambia’s case to resolve its outsanding debt with China and will not inspire diplomatic cooperation to resolve the case with the Creditors Committee as regards to China that holds a third of Zambia’s external debt.

NKOMBO ONE OF THE MOST HARD WORKING MINISTERS … he’s been making decisions in public interest – Bowman

Former Lusaka Province minister Bowman Lusambo says Local Government minister Garry Nkombo is one of the most hard working Cabinet Ministers in the UPND administration, and has been making decisions in public interest while the other ministers are being robotic and waiting for the President to do the work for them.

Speaking with Daily Revelation, Lusambo said the decisions Nkombo was not being governed by politics in the decisions he was making.

“For me, minister Garry Nkombo is one of the most hard working ministers in the UPND administration. And the decisions that he has been making regarding the keep Zambia clean, green and healthy are what I would call mistakes that are in the interest of public because they are meant to bring sanity in Lusaka district and other districts across the country. These decisions that my brother Garry Nkombo has been making are in public interest, but not in political interest. We tried that with Miles Sampa but we pulled out because of political interests,” Lusambo said. “And a minister who makes a certain decision and the President says that you have made this decision in the execution of your duties, but you have made it at a wrong time, is a good minister. My only advice to my brother Garry Nkombo is that he should be consulting other stakeholders and the local authority. He should take time to consult the current mayor Chilando Chitangala. I used to consult her when I was Lusaka Province minister and she proved to be very instrumental.”

However, Lusambo said that most of the Cabinet Ministers serving in the UPND administration are robots who are underperforming.

Lusambo, who is also former Kabushi member of parliament, said that President Hakainde Hichilema is bound to fail if he maintains robot Cabinet Ministers that have failed to buy into his vision.

He said that President Hichilema needs a team of Cabinet Ministers that would buy into his vision so that he can deliver on his campaign promises.

“God created this country called Zambia and gave authority to Zambians to govern themselves and delegated that authority to the President. And the Head of State, in turn… http://dailyrevelationzambia.com/nkombo-one-of-the-most-hard-working-ministers-hes-been-making-decisions-in-public-interest-bowman/

Statement by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva at the Conclusion of Her Visit to Zambia

January 24, 2023

Lusaka, Zambia: Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement today in Lusaka at the conclusion of her January 22-24 visit to Zambia:

“I wish to thank H.E. President Hichilema, Minister of Finance and National Planning Musokotwane, and Central Bank Governor Kalyala for their gracious hospitality and constructive discussions. I also very much appreciated the opportunity to engage with students, civil society, and the private sector. During my meetings, we discussed recent economic developments, progress and next steps in the Government’s reform effort, and views on how we can best partner with Zambia on its’ journey towards a more resilient and inclusive future.

“I came out of these interactions hugely impressed by Zambia’s enormous potential given its rich endowment of natural resources, and a dynamic and entrepreneurial young population. Zambia is making tremendous progress on reforms, at what is a particularly challenging time for the world economy. More, of course, needs to be done, especially to deliver the jobs Zambia’s youth need, but these reforms are critical to strengthen Zambia’s resilience and seize its’ opportunity – especially in the agricultural, energy, and tourism sectors – for climate-resilient, more inclusive, and more vibrant growth.

“I want to especially highlight Zambia’s efforts to improve the use of public resources by reallocating resources from poorly targeted and inefficient spending and redirecting them to much-needed spending on education and health, a critical investment in Zambia’s most precious resource—its people. I also want to commend the government’s efforts to improve transparency and tackle corruption, vital steps to help protect public resources for the benefit of all Zambians and create a better environment for investors and businesses.

“Zambia also needs swift resolution of its debt situation to complement these reform efforts and preserve the positive growth momentum. We recognize that these are complex and challenging discussions, but it is clear from my visit that Zambia is doing its part, so I strongly encourage creditors to move forward and reach an agreement on a debt treatment as soon as possible. That would ensure we can move forward with the first review of the Fund-supported economic program and resolve a key source of uncertainty weighing on the outlook.”

Eswatini premier league referee brutally kills wife; hands self to police

0

A veteran referee from Eswatini’s top flight league, Lucky Ndlangamandla, was last week arrested for brutally killing his wife after he allegedly stabbed her 24 times with a knife following a dispute between the couple.

According to reports, in the wee hours of Wednesday last week, Makalakalane as Ndlangamandla is popularly known, had a heated argument with his late wife over accusations of infidelity after the accused had not slept at home and is said to have spent the night away.

“The altercation between the couple, according to sources, started after Ndlangamandla spent the night away from his flat,” wrote Eswatini Observer.

“They said the woman, who worked in Newcastle, South Africa, arrived at Ndlangamandla’s flat on Tuesday night and did not find him there.

“However, since she had the house key, she managed to get into the house with the hope that her spouse would return during the course of the night.

“Ndlangamandla reportedly returned the following morning and found his wife around and asked what she was doing at their flat.

“The well-placed sources stated that the couple had already been having issues in their marriage and were estranged as a result.

“A verbal quarrel, which escalated to a physical altercation is said to have ensued.

“It was during the quarrel that the wife is reported to have stated that she wanted out of the marriage.

“The referee is said to have not taken kindly to this, so he allegedly cited that his wife could not leave him as he had paid dowry (lobola) for her.

“Ndlangamandla is alleged to have further stated that he could not be jilted especially because he had even bought her a car.

“As all this happened, the woman reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife, which Ndlangamandla tried to snatch away from her.

“However, not only did he manage to disarm his spouse, but he allegedly also stabbed her with it.

“It is alleged the woman was stabbed about 24 times all over the body.”

Following the gruesome murder, the seasoned match official reportedly handed himself to the police.

US finalizing plans to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine, US officials say

0

Washington – The Biden administration is finalizing plans to send US-made Abrams tanks to Ukraine and could make an announcement as soon as this week, according to three US officials familiar with the deliberations.

The timing around the actual delivery of the tanks is still unclear and it normally takes several months to train troops to use the tanks effectively, officials said.

An announcement about the tanks could be part of an attempt to break a diplomatic logjam with Germany, which indicated to the US last week that it would not send its Leopard tanks to Ukraine unless the US also agreed to send its M1 Abrams tanks.

Top national security officials in the administration have been actively considering steps they could take to convince Germany to send the Leopards.

On Friday, at a meeting of western defense leaders in Germany, the US and its allies failed to convince German officials to send the Leopards as part of Berlin’s next round of military assistance to Ukraine. But on Tuesday, the German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said “We are preparing our decision, which will come very soon” on the tanks.

Later on Tuesday German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine after “months of debate.”

CNN has reached out to the German government for comment.

The Biden administration has never taken the possibility of shipping American tanks entirely off the table, but US officials said publicly last week that now is not the right time to send the 70-ton M1 Abrams tanks because they are costly and require a significant amount of training to operate.

The tanks have instead repeatedly been floated as a long-term option – even as critics say the right time is now, as Ukraine braces for the possibility Russia will mobilize more troops and launch a new offensive.

Sky News Arabia was first to report the news that the US is considering sending the tanks.

Ukraine’s President Volodomyr Zelensky has consistently asked Western allies for modern tanks as his country prepares braces for an expected major Russian counteroffensive in the spring.

The UK has already announced it will send 12 of their Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, crossing what had previously appeared to be a red line for the US and its European allies. A US announcement it is sending tanks would increase the pressure on Germany as it decides whether to authorize a transfer of Leopards. There are believed be around 2,000 in Europe and Poland on Tuesday formally asked Berlin to approve a transfer of some its Leopards to Ukraine.

Any announcement would be a long-term contribution of Abrams, meaning the Ukrainians will not have them on the ground anytime soon because of the training and getting the sustainment framework established, a former defense official with knowledge of the deliberations told CNN. For now, the pending announcement by the US is more to make Germany feel more comfortable in providing their own tanks.

“These are not going to be tanks that are going to be on the ground next week or next month,” the former official said.

Given the last week’s announcement of a $2.5 billion drawdown of US stocks to send to Ukraine, an announcement is unlikely to be another drawdown. Instead, the provision of tanks to Ukraine could come from a new contract under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) or a refurbishment of M-1 Abrams tanks from another country such as Poland, which recently closed a deal to buy more Abrams and has been vocal in its insistence on sending tank to Ukraine.

Either scenario gives the US more time and space to acquire, train and equip Ukraine with the tanks which are complex to operate. Ukrainian forces are already training on a number of new and advanced systems. That list includes training on Patriot missiles, UK-made Challenger 2 tanks, M109 howitzers and more, as well as the combined arms training that recently began in Germany.

Tanks represent the most powerful direct offensive weapon provided to Ukraine so far, a heavily armed system designed to meet the enemy head on instead of firing from a distance. If used properly with the necessary training, they could allow Ukraine to retake territory against Russian forces that have had time to dig defensive lines. The US has begun supplying refurbished Soviet-era T-72 tanks, but modern western tanks are a generation ahead in terms of their ability to target enemy positions.

Pentagon and White House officials have denied that the risk of escalation with Russia has had anything to do with the US decision to delay a decision on sending the tanks. Rather, the concern has been how difficult it would be for Ukrainian forces to operate and maintain the Abrams tank and whether it would be effective on the battlefield in Ukraine. CNN

Nic Cheeseman: When Zimbabwe stops pretending to be a democracy

0

On Saturday 14 January, Harare based lawyer Kudzai Kadzere was beaten by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), leaving him with a fractured hand that required surgery.

Images shared online show a long run of stitches up the inside of his arm and across his wrist, forming a bloody L shape. His “crime” was that he did his job by representing 24 four members of the opposition political party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), who had been arrested for allegedly holding an illegal meeting.

“My car was blocked by riot police who started beating me … It’s sad that not only my rights have been infringed [on], but also the rights of my clients to access their lawyer,” Kadzere says.

The next day tragedy turned into farce. Kadzere was arrested when he went to report the assault. Despite having visited the police station voluntarily, he was accused of having escaped from lawful custody.

The thuggish treatment of Kadzere is depressing, but not surprising. No one who has been watching Zimbabwe in recent months would have expected anything else. Ahead of the general elections later this year, the government is reverting to its old ways.

Behind in the polls, with limited support even within his own party and fresh out of ideas, President Emmerson Mnangagwa knows that only intimidation and electoral manipulation will keep him in power.

With a government that has given up on trying to hide its authoritarian foundations, 2023 is likely to be the country’s worst election for the next 15 years.

No more pretending

The squalid autocracy that President Mnangagwa presides over couldn’t be more different from the Zimbabwe he promised to create. Ahead of the 2018 general election, Mnangagwa pledged to usher in a new period of democracy and development distinguished by “free and fair” elections.

The dark days experienced under his predecessor, Robert Mugabe, would be confined to the dustbin of history, as the country opened up both politically and economically.

Desperate to persuade Zimbabwean voters and international partners to overlook his violent past, Mnangagwa’s campaign even put up posters proclaiming his commitment to good governance and human rights.

However, this was little more than a masquerade, a piece of political theatre that was not even sustained through the election period itself.

When opposition supporters gathered to protest against delays in announcing the presidential results and the manipulation of the process, some of the soldiers deployed to disperse them opened fire. Six people were killed. A new wave of intimidation of opposition leaders and activists followed, and still exists today.

One of the main reasons for this shift in approach is that Mnangagwa’s confidence trick didn’t work. His government failed to secure the international investment it needed, didn’t manage to remove sanctions, and has proved unable to provide even the most basic services to its citizens.

In turn, the combination of broken promises, economic hardship and rampant corruption has further undermined government support. According to the widely respected Afrobarometer survey, trust in the ruling party declined from 58% to 44% between 2017 and March/April 2022.

This fall went hand-in-hand with a rise in support for the main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, and CCC, a new political vehicle built out of the ashes of the Movement for Democratic Change.

Despite continuous government efforts to use divide-and-rule strategies to undermine opposition unity, the 2022 poll revealed that Chamisa was the most popular candidate for president, leading Mnangagwa by 3%.

This may not sound like a big gap, but it was the first time that Chamisa has been placed in the lead by the Afrobarometer and it underestimates his true support.

When you consider that many opposition supporters are scared to say they do not support the government for fear of retribution, it seems likely that Chamisa’s advantage is much bigger – and that Mnangagwa would face an uphill battle to win an election that was anywhere close to being free and fair.

The repressive reflex

The authoritarian tactics used to ensure ZANU-PF stays in power represent a finely tuned combination of the old and the new. While the use of force arguably peaked during the 2008 presidential elections, physical violence is now buttressed by a wider set of controls over almost all aspects of civic and political life, pushing the country in a dangerous direction. Moreover, the military has further expanded its political and economic influence, moving the country further away from genuine civilian rule.

The rural support base of the government, which keeps it in power, has long been built on a combination of patronage, disinformation, food aid and violence.

Where the campaign in 2018 saw a relaxation of control that enabled the opposition to campaign in many rural areas for the first time in a decade, in 2023, traditional leaders are once again being mobilised to block access to the opposition and coerce voters to the polls.

The political control this gives Mnangagwa is bolstered by a raft of legislation that has curtailed what few civil liberties Zimbabweans had left. The new Private Voluntary Act (PVO) passed by parliament in December is a classic piece of ‘anti-NGO’ legislation that undermines the ability of civil society groups to operate.

Under this law, the government can cancel the registration of any organisations operating in a manner deemed to be “political”, and arbitrarily interfere with how they are run. Although the new rules have not yet been signed into law by President Mnangagwa, some of them are already being implemented.

In particular, the increasingly centralised control of civic activity is being used to block a wide range of activities, including voter registration drives.

Meanwhile, the Cyber and Data Protection Act of 2021 “further undermined the rights of Zimbabweans, including civil society groups and human rights defenders”, consolidating existing censorship strategies.

This is emblematic of a broader trend, in which the law has been turned into a political weapon to detain and exhaust government critics. As I write this article, opposition leader Job Sikhala has been in jail for six months after being detained on trumped up charges and denied bail numerous times.

Others who have suffered similar treatment include journalist and anti-corruption leader Hopewell Chin’ono.

Worse still, three opposition youth leaders – Cecilia Chimbiri, Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova – were arrested when they spoke out about how they were abducted and sexually assaulted after being taken into police custody.

In Mnangagwa’s Zimbabwe, citizens do not enjoy freedom of association or freedom of speech, undermining any possibility of a credible election.

A Potemkin election?

As if widespread repression isn’t enough, the government will also exert great control over the election process through its malign influence over the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, the gerrymandering of constituency boundaries, and the harassment of voters and election observers.

As things stand, Zimbabwe is on course to hold a Potemkin election that will keep Mnangagwa in power no matter how unpopular he becomes.

This raises the question of how the international community should respond. It sometimes makes sense to offer a series of ‘carrots’ to encourage reform, such as the suggestion that Zimbabwe be readmitted to the Commonwealth if it meets certain minimum standards.

However, when a government clearly demonstrates its disdain for democracy on a daily basis, it is beyond naïve to believe that ‘bringing them back into the club’ will make any difference.

When faced with a government causing so much pain to its own citizens, the first thing the international community should ensure is that it does no harm.

This means not giving a dysfunctional and abusive government a veneer of respectability that it does not deserve – and being clear that an election held under these circumstances is not really an election at all.

Top Ukrainian officials quit in anti-corruption drive

0

Several senior Ukrainian officials have resigned as President Volodymyr Zelensky begins a shake-up of personnel across his government.

A top adviser, four deputy ministers and five regional governors left their posts on Tuesday.

Their departures come as Ukraine launches a broad anti-corruption drive.

Recently, authorities have seen bribery claims, reports of officials buying food at inflated prices and one figure accused of living a lavish lifestyle.

Senior aide Mykhailo Podolyak said Mr Zelensky was responding to a “key public demand” that justice should apply to everyone.

The president has already banned state officials from leaving the country unless on authorised business.

The first to resign on Tuesday was Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the president’s deputy head of office, who oversaw regional policy and had earlier worked on Mr Zelensky’s election campaign.

After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last February he became a frequent spokesperson for the government.

He was accused by Ukrainian investigative journalists of using of several expensive sports cars throughout the war – though denies any wrongdoing.

In a Telegram post, he thanked Mr Zelensky for “the opportunity to do good deeds every day and every minute”.

Deputy Defence Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov also resigned, following reports he oversaw the purchase of military food supplies at inflated prices from a relatively unknown firm. The department called this a “technical mistake” and claimed no money had changed hands.

The defence minister himself – Oleksii Reznikov – has been under scrutiny for the same reason.

A host of other top officials were dismissed on Tuesday, including:

Deputy Prosecutor General Oleskiy Symonenko,Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories Ivan Lukerya, Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories Vyacheslav Negoda, Deputy Minister for Social Policy Vitaliy Muzychenko and the regional governors of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Sumy and Kherson

Ukraine has a history of corruption and in 2021 Transparency International ranked the country at 122 out of 180 countries in its ranking of corrupt states.

A crackdown is one of the EU’s key demands if the country is to advance its application to join the bloc.

In an address on Sunday, Mr Zelensky promised there would be “no return to what used to be in the past, to the way various people close to state institutions” used to live.

His comments followed the arrest of Ukraine’s Deputy Infrastructure Minister Vasyl Lozinskyi on Saturday on suspicion of accepting a bribe worth over $350,000 (£285,000) over the supply of electricity generators. He has denied the charges.

David Arakhamia, the head of Mr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, has said that corrupt officials could face jail.

“Officials at all levels have been constantly warned through official and unofficial channels: focus on the war, help the victims, reduce bureaucracy and stop doing dubious business.

“Many of them have actually listened, but some, unfortunately, did not,” he said in a Telegram statement.

“If it doesn’t work in a civilised way, it will be done according to the laws of wartime. This applies both to recent purchases of generators and to fresh scandals in the ministry of defence.”

While there have been anti-corruption reforms in recent years, the stakes are high for Kyiv – which is receiving billions of dollars worth of financial aid from Western allies.

IT’S MY STATEMENT … I will not disown the OCIDA statement because what I have written, I have written- Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu

IT’S MY STATEMENT – BISHOP MPUNDU

…..says he will not disown the OCIDA statement because ‘what I have written, I have written.

By NATION REPORTER

EMERITUS Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu says attempts by State House and Cabinet Office to have him disown and discredit the Our Civic Duty Association (OCIDA) statement released to the media last week will not succeed because “what I have written, I have written.”

And Archbishop Mpundu has described as dictatorship efforts by the State to gag him and OCIDA from holding a press conference at which he was to address a range of governance issues including regionalism, corruption, emerging dictatorship, high cost of living among others.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Mpundu has rubbished claims by government that the OCIDA statement which was circulated to the media last week was authored by University of Zambia lecturer Sishuwa Sishuwa and Zambia former Ambassador to Ethiopia Emmanuel Mwamba, stating he did not need the two to express his views on national matters.

In an interview, Sunday, Archbishop Mpundu said he owned the OCIDA statement which was circulated to the media last week and that he had sanctioned its distribution after State House and Cabinet Office allegedly sent an emissary in the name of Mwamba Peni to persuade him not to read the statement.

He stated that the UPND administration had adopted the divide and rule tactic and had succeeded in converting some of the trustees against OCIDA who had now launched a crusade to discredit a statement whose draft they had seen and studied.

Archbishop Mpundu stated that he was not going to withdraw the statement nor was he going to disown it and that if government was not pleased with him, there was nothing he could do but advise them to accept his position and work with it.

“Government did not want me to read the statement and so I told one of my people to circulate the document to the press. So that statement cannot be more official than that. It was written and it remains written by us (OCIDA). It is like Pilate who was asked by the Chief priests of the Jews not to write that Jesus was the King of the Jews but to write that Jesus said He was the King of the Jews. But Pilate answered, what I have written, I have written. So I will not withdraw the statement and what I have written, I have written. If they want to take me tom court, so be it,” Archbishop Mpundu said.

He said he had assumed the chairmanship of OCIDA after the retirement of late Simon Zukas and that OCIDA trustees who did not want to continue belonging to the organisation were free to walk away.

Archbishop Mpundu said OCIDA was not going to force its members to stay with the organisation because Zambia was a democracy.
“Remember this is supposed to be a democracy where there is free speech, where people can express their opinions freely…and those who have been elected must listen to the people because it is the people who hold power. The legitimacy of any government is the power of the people.

So if the government is not happy, let them suit themselves with what they wish because what we dealt with in the statement were things people are talking about,” Archbishop Mpundu said.

And Archbishop Mpundu has rubbished assertions that it was Dr Sishuwa and Emmanuel Mwamba who had written the OCIDA statement, stating that he did not know the two and had never interacted with any one of them in his life.

He said there was no way he was going to allow anyone person write his thoughts on his behalf because “I always write what I speak.”
Archbishop Mpundu said Zambia should not be allowed to drift back to the dictatorship of the past regimes and that the UPND was being undemocratic by attempting to drown his voice.

“The people from State House sent Mwamba Peni (Permanent Secretary (Special Duties) at Cabinet to come and persuade me not to read the statement. Before they (UPND) formed government, they were happy to listen to the statements I was making. Tell them that not too long ago, Telesphore Mpundu was your hero, what has changed. When I said it was wrong to incarcerate Hakainde Hichilema without trial, they welcomed it and they brought the British Commonwealth here. Remind them of the trips we have made together.”
“Now all of a sudden, I am not in good books with them. Fine, let it be. I did not tell them that I should be in their books all the time. But they should not be creating lies that I do not own the statement,” he said.

US,CHINA KEY IN ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT- Dr Chitalu Chilufya

…as he explains the Zambia has from time imemorial taken a non-aligned position on foreign policy

LUSAKA—Tuesday, January 24th 2023

SMART EAGLES

Patriotic Front (PF) President in waiting Hon. Dr Chitalu Chilufya has explained that Zambia takes a non-aligned positon when it comes to bilateral relations.

This comes in the wake of a public debate that has ensued on who, between China and America Zambia should align herself with.

But Dr. Chilufya has clearly indicated that both China and America play vital roles in the country’s affairs.

He said America spends billions of dollars in the health sector for the benefits of all Zambians that it’s relations must be cemented .

“Zambian foreign policy has been guided by tradition and a formal policy position. And we have basically followed the policy of none alignment. We have had this dichotomy of relations, America and China. I was privileged when I was minister of health and Zambia and America enjoy very warm bilateral relations and Zambia is a beneficiary of support from America,” he said.

“In the health sector, billions of dollars have been spent to set up the ART program in Zambia and we have received sufficient support in the human capital development in the supply chain and in strengthening health system in general. Zambia has also benefited in areas of governance, areas of agriculture, environmental protection when it comes to its relations with America.” He added .

And Dr. Chilufya said China has a commanding role in infrastructure development in Zambia.

“Secondly, China has a commanding role in infrastructure development in Zambia and they are contributing in transport, in the health sector and in many other sectors. So China and Zambia equally have had a good relationship,” he said.

“And again speaking as former minister of health, China sent its first medical team to Zambia in 1978 and we have had more than 22 medical teams that have come to Zambia since then that have been supporting service delivery.” He added.

Meanwhile, Dr Chilufya stressed the need for Zambia to sustain the said foreign policy.

“So Zambia has had warm bilateral relations with China. So I emphasize that traditionally, Zambia has maintained a non-aligned positon and has enjoyed warm relations with both America and China. And this is guided by our foreign policy and it’s a position that we would like to sustain,” he said.

PRESIDENTIAL TRIPS ARE NOT FOR NEGOTIATING AND SECURING MOUs- IT’S A LIE

24/01/2023

From the time that the New Dawn formed government, President Hakainde Hichilema has made many Presidential trips to different countries that have stressed our treasury even more. The justification has been that he goes out there to negotiate and sign various MOUs that are beneficial for the country. Well, this is very far from the truth and this is because of the following reasons.

1. Before MOUs are signed, they are taken to the Attorney General for vetting and approval. This AG approval is usually 5 days or so before the trip.
So it is not true that the President travels to Abu Dhabi for instance, to negotiate and secure these MOUs. There is no special negotiating skills of the President on that trip that brings into being these MOUs. The President and his praise singers should not, therefore, boast that these international trips are bearing fruit via the signing of MOUs. Those MOUs are negotiated long before the presidential trip; they are approved by AG before the trip.

2. The MOUs can still be signed even if the President is not there. Effectively, the President travels all the way to go and ‘tantamila’ and watch the signing of MOUs which are not even binding. Presidential travels are very expensive. We have ministers and Ambassadors in various countries, and so making the President to travel for things that are not even binding is not a prudent way to use our resources.

3. President HH had promised to reduce Presidential travels once he got into office and it is very disappointing to see him do the very opposite of what he promised. When President Magufuli promised to reduce Presidential travels in Tanzania and stuck to his words, we saw how much money their country saved and was able to invest in other sectors. If President HH does the same, we will certainly save a lot of money.

In conclusion, the country is in dire need of finding ways of saving money and one way that the President himself identified and promised to work on was reduction of presidential trips. So as we start 2023, we would like to remind him to remember his own words and stick to his promise so that he helps the country save the much needed money. Whether he goes on those trips or not, it has no bearing on the MOUs being signed, so Zambians should not be lied to about the Presidential negotiating skills that are needed and used on those trips, because no such a thing is needed at all. Everything is done right here in Zambia by the AG, unless the President is breaking the law to appear as ‘the Man.’

ACC Has Sneaked Some Americans Into The Country To Help Investigate PF Leaders – Former PF SG Davies Mwila

ACC HAS SNEAKED SOME AMERICANS INTO THE COUNTRY TO HELP INVESTIGATE PF LEADERS – FORMER PF SG MWILA

….says UPND has failed to prove that PF stole

Tuesday, 24 January, 2023 (Lusaka)

FORMER PF secretary general Davies Mwila says the UPND administration and law enforcement agencies have collectively failed to prove that PF leaders stole public funds.

In an interview, Mwila said law enforcement agencies were now only abusing the law of “possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime”.

“First and foremost, it’s now one year, five months [but] they are still talking about stealing. The question is, who has been found guilty or convicted? It’s now one year, five months, no one has been convicted over the issue of stealing. And look at all cases that are there, I have not seen anyone that has been charged over the issue of theft. So, it is an exercise that is not going to work because government has failed to prove that the PF leaders stole from government. They have failed to prove, that’s why they are ashamed,” he said.

“With all the Drug Enforcement Commission and Anti-Corruption [Commission], Zambia police, all these institutions; they have not come up with anything to show the Zambian people that the leadership stole. The issue of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, they are actually abusing the law because they will just come at your home and say ‘this house we are getting it because we suspect that it is a proceed of crime’ without even asking where you got the money from. In short, they don’t want anyone to have money”.

And Mwila claimed that the Anti-Corruption Commission had sneaked some Americans into the country to help investigate PF leaders.

“Because they have failed, we are challenging Anti-Corruption Commission to come out [and state] why they have engaged the white people from America to come and investigate corruption. Maybe you may not be aware, they have brought in people from America who are investigating the leadership or the previous leaders who were in PF. They are going round in all the institutions and why? Because Anti-Corruption Commission and DEC have failed to perform. So we are challenging the Anti-Corruption Commission and DEC to come out in the open and tell the Zambian people what those whites are doing. Because if they want to bring FBI or any institution from America or Britain, they are supposed to get permission from Parliament. Because Drug Enforcement Commission and Anti-Corruption Commission operate under the Act of Parliament,” said Mwila.

“So, Parliament is supposed to know and give them the mandate but unfortunately, they have sneaked in those white people who are going round in these institutions trying to find out who stole from these institutions. But I can tell you that Anti-Corruption Commission, Zambia police, DEC, they have failed to find where the leaders have stolen. Yes, we have said, if anyone stole, let them recover the money but I can tell you this exercise has failed, this fight has failed and that’s the more reason you have seen that they are toning down. If you have observed, they have realised that it is not taking them anywhere”.

HH OFF TO SENEGAL FOR SECOND EDITION OF THE DAKAR SUMMIT ON AGRICULTURE

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation wishes to inform the Nation that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia is today scheduled to travel to Dakar, Senegal, at the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal and Chairperson of the African Union, to participate in the Dakar 2 Summit on Agriculture from 25th to 27th January, 2023.

The President is part of a select Committee of African Heads of State who are tasked to ensure Africa mobilises cheaper capital funds for the Agricultural inputs and value chain investment.

President Hichilema will therefore join 18 other Heads of State and Government at the second edition of this important Summit, convened in collaboration with African Development Bank (AfDB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Research (IFAR) where the African Development Bank is expected to announce its Compact Fund to support structural transformation in agriculture in countries such as Zambia.

During the Summit under the theme, “Feed Africa: Food Resilience and Food Sovereignty”, the President will participate in Presidential High Level Roundtable discussions on agriculture, food security and integration, as well as preside over the presentation of Zambia’s Compact on Agriculture, which outlines the country’s potential and strategies for development of the sector, in order to attract investments from to private sector stakeholders, multilateral organisations.

The participation of the President in this meeting is therefore crucial in order to shore up the Government’s ongoing efforts to create opportunities for joint ventures and partnerships in the Agriculture sector, with key industry players, in recognition of it being a major source of livelihood for the majority of the Zambian people.

The Government, under the leadership of President Hichilema, has continued to seek investments towards climate smart agriculture in order to enhance food security, ensure resilience of livelihoods and respond to the effects of climate change.

On the margins of the Summit, the President is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and heads of key international organisations.

The President is expected to return to Zambia immediately after his engagements.

President Hichilema wants enhance US trade, investment

President Hakainde Hichilema has called for more trade and investment between Zambia and the United States of America (USA) in order to address the various economic challenges the country is facing.

Speaking during a bilateral meeting with the US Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen at State House in Lusaka yesterday, the President said strengthened trade and investment between the two countries will help to address various economic challenges in Zambia which were caused by the pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war.

The Head of State said enhanced investment in various sectors such education and agriculture are vital for the economic growth of the country.

Mr Hichilema also noted that there is need not to shrink the envelope of investment but expand it in order to support Zambia, which needs to meet its International Monetary Fund (IMF) deadline.

‘’There is need to expand the envelope of investment between Zambia and other countries in order to unlock the investment potential of the country like Zambia in various sectors such agriculture, energy and infrastructure which can help the growth of food security of the country,” he said.

He added that, “I would also like to express gratitude for the support that the US government has been rendering to Zambia over the years in various areas of the economy such as education and health,’’ he said.

And US Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, said the economic cooperation between Zambia and America is crucial as the two countries are facing global economic headwinds, including the spillover from the Russia-Ukraine war.

Professor Yellen expressed hope that her visit to Zambia will help the two countries to tackle global challenges that have serious consequences at national level.

She said there is need to invest in healthy populations and preparedness for future health shocks and continued efforts to systematically tackle corruption in the country.

‘’I greatly appreciate the opportunity to exchange views here in Zambia and for your warm welcome and hospitality and I look forward to our continued conversation and work to strengthen our bilateral economic integration,’’ said Prof. Yellen.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane, expressed gratitude to the US government for the support and huge assistance expected through the Millennium Challenge.

Dr Musokotwane observed that the best way for Zambia to be assisted is to create an environment that is going to attract more investment.

He said investment creates wealth and jobs and also enhances the tax revenue of the country.

“I would like to thank the Secretary of the Treasury for the support that she has continued to render in helping Zambia to get that relief under the common framework,’’ he said.

UPND ENEMIES PLOT TO RE-INTRODUCE EVOUCHER TO MAKE UPND FAIL

UPND ENEMIES PLOT TO RE-INTRODUCE EVOUCHER TO MAKE UPND FAIL.

A dubious scheme to bring back the complicated, corruption laden eVoucher is under way in the ministry of agriculture. See the attached Ministry of agriculture documents.
The main aim and goal is to deliberately mess up the 2023/24 farming season so that the UPND can lose the support of farmers and voters at large.

Four days ago, agriculture minister Rueben Mtolo Phiri announced that the process to tender for governments contracts under the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) would be done within February 2023. This, he said, was to make sure that the procurement, supply and distribution of farming inputs including fertiliser for the next farming season is seamless. What he didn’t announce to the public is that there are immediate plans to re- introduce eVoucher . This is the evoucher program which even the PF government abandoned completely except in Southern province where it was implemented to punish the people that hail from there for supporting UPND.

As can be seen, In this ministry of agriculture document, they are planning 100% eVoucher for Southern Province yet again, while in other provinces they are treading carefully? Why ? In other provinces, they have selected some districts to test their new version of this corrupt evoucher program. But they want to implement it in Southern province in all districts at 100 per cent.

This is clearly political, those who want president Hichilema to fail and lose elections in 2026 are targeting to mess up Southern province so that the people there can stop supporting the UPND. If this is a good program, why do they want to implement it only in selected districts of other provinces but 100 per cent in Southern province alone. It’s a pity that the so called intelligence is sleeping or pulling in different directions otherwise some of this nonsense should not see the light of the day.

Why do they want to subject the people to this highly inefficient and corrupt system yet again?

The eVoucher is prone to fraud, corruption and price hikes by Agro Dealers and farmers are manipulated by Agro Dealers as they spend endless nights camping at their shops to access inputs. In some cases, farmers are compelled to get undesired inputs.
But the middle men get the profits.

The initiators of the Evoucher were the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) some time back. ZNFU abandoned the eVoucher program after realising that it was not efficient and only benefited agro dealers and other thieves but not the intended small-scale farmers. But now, under the new program ZNFU has been excluded from the entire process and instead the ministry of agriculture invited Chance Kabaghe and his organization (IAPRI) to manipulate the process.

There is this daring propensity by the ministry of agriculture to exclude major stakeholders like ZNFU from forums such as FISP. One wonders the motive?

Chance Kabaghe sits on the PF committee on agriculture chaired by Given Lubinda. Do you expect Chance Kabaghe and IAPRI to support UPND genuinely? (We challenge Chance Kabaghe to deny this revelation and we shall produce material evidence of his membership on this committee which includes several other individuals).

We hear some PF linked individuals are being told to form Agro dealerships in readiness for this decision.
Clearly the agenda is evil as it’s intended to mess up this farming season yet again and thereby render UPND and President Hichilema unelectable in 2026. UPND only has this farming season to improve the Agric sector .

The President must keep a close eye on Ministry of agriculture and Chance Kabaghe.
This season’s input distribution exercise was a near disaster and we seem not to have learnt our lesson. The vultures are ready to pounce again even this year.

If the next farming season is mishandled then we will be headed for a serious political, social and food crisis. This is what the opposition are praying for.

Furthermore, a closer look at this document shows a
reduction in fertilizer allocations to farmers from six (6) to four (4) bags? This looks retrogressive. We should be growing numbers and not reducing them.

We also note some funny terminology in the document such as ‘Graduate Farmers’ this rhetoric is not necessary as most of our farmers need government support. Where do farmers graduate to? Instead, farmers need proper financial support through and through and not graduating them into some imaginary world as Mtolo and Chance seem to suggest.

To be forewarned is to be fore-armed. But unfortunately, even at State House there are hyenas, chameleons and vultures who are only looking at how they can personally benefit from this. Sometime we feel sorry for president Hichilema for we can clearly see how events will unfold. We have been in this game for close to two decades now and we know the signs and can easily interpret events.
We rest our case.

Public Order Act will be amended to allow even the opposition to freely mingle – UPND

0

United Party For National Development (UPND) Presidential Campaign Team Member Beene Hachombwa says the amendment of the Public Order Act will allow every Zambian citizen including those in the Opposition to freely gather and mingle.

Mr Hachombwa stated that the amendment of the Public Order Act is one of the things that they have been campaigning for from the time they were in the opposition.

“The amendment of this Act is important because when we were in the opposition, we were not allowed to meet as a party because the law was only favouring those who where in the ruling party but today we want everyone to be free because we are all Zambian people,” he said

“President Hakainde Hichilema is very determined to ensure that this law is amended as soon as possible, and the Minister himself has made it clear that we are receiving submissions on what people want, because this law was the law for the Patriotic Front – PF, to us it is a law that was there to fix us, and today we are saying that let this law be amended to allow everyone to mingle because we want a free Zambia,” he added

Mr Hachombwa mentioned that their focus as a party is to deliver on what they promised to the people of Zambia, adding that Zambia is a democratic country where everybody is allowed to speak and their party does not expect everyone to have opinions that are in line with that of their party.

He said that President Hichilema wants people to exercise their fundamental right to speak ,hence, giving an assurance that this year the Public Order Act will be amended because this amendment has been long overdue.

“Even when the Public Order Act has not been amended yet, there is still freedom of assembly where people are gathering anywhere without the Police going to pounce on them,” he said

And when responding as to whether President Hichilema is a dictator, Mr Hachombwa noted that if at all President Hichilema was a dictator he would have amended laws such as the defamation of the president to fix people, further stating that the removal of this law does not mean people should now insult President Hichilema as he believes that every Zambian must exercise their rights.

“But to hear our colleagues say that the UPND are doing things like they dictators, I think with open eyes we are all looking at what has been happening in the past, where you would an opposition insulting the President and no one is following them, during their regime if you insult, I was a victim myself where the radio station was ambushed by the Police who picked us up, that’s how they operated but today there is nobody can be picked up for saying anything, that alone must tell you to say the President is promoting pure democracy,” he explained

“The difference between then and now is that when you spoke under the PF is just saying the truth you will be arrested but the difference with now is that for instance the National Democratic Congress – NDC leader Saboi Imboela goes on to insult and is called in at the Police for questioning because insulting is not allowed, that’s just normal, but people should not take advantage of the fact that the President Hichilema is saying no, let people talk, let us talk sense, and criticise the UPND and the President on what we promised the people of Zambia as their are so many things, and for us there are so many things that we need to concentrate on and not people who are busy insulting the President, because in 2023, we want to deliver to the people of Zambia and not give any excuses,” he further explained

Chamisa Condemns Africa as “Ground for Murders and Violence” After Eswatini Lawyer’s Murder

Thulani Maseko, a leading human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist in Eswatini, was tragically shot and killed at his home on Saturday evening. Maseko was murdered in front of his wife and children by unknown assailants.

The murder has sparked outrage and condemnation from human rights groups and political leaders, with many calling for an end to the violence and murders that seem to be increasing in Africa.

Nelson Chamisa, leader of the CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC), took to social media to express his condolences for Maseko’s family and to condemn Africa as a breeding ground for violence and murder. Chamisa stated, “My sincere condolences to Eswatini and Thulani Maseko’s family. A leading Swaziland human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist was shot dead at his house and died on the spot. Africa cannot be a breeding ground for murders and violence. Cowards and rogues cannot stand good men. Rest In Peace comrade.”

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere also expressed her condolences to Maseko’s family and described his death as tragic. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Maseko family on the tragic passing of Thulani Maseko, a leading human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist who was shot dead yesterday evening at his house. His wife was there with him in the lounge. May he rest in peace,” said Mahere.

Media reports in Eswatini indicate that Maseko’s death came a few hours after King Mswati warned those calling for democracy that his mercenaries would deal with them. However, the government of Eswatini has distanced itself from Maseko’s murder, stating that he was killed by unknown criminals.

“Government also wants to warn against speculations and insinuations, peddled particularly on social media platforms in instances like these. Again, the government distinctively disassociates… and the country’s authorities from these heinous acts,” said a statement from the government.

The murder of Thulani Maseko has once again highlighted the ongoing human rights crisis in Eswatini and the need for greater protection for pro-democracy activists and human rights defenders. The international community must come together to support the families of victims like Maseko and to demand an end to the violence and repression that continues to plague the African continent.

Solution To Loadshedding? Electrically Charged Stones ‘Discovered’ In DRC

Over the weekend the internet was abuzz when footage of electrically charged stones reportedly discovered in the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of Congo circulated.

Videos of the electrically charged stones sparking when they touch each other and even being used to light a bulb have piqued the interest of researchers from all over the world.

In response to the video, researchers and laymen have been trying to understand if the stones are a solution to the power shortage that has hit Africa or just another internet hoax.

A kilogram of these electrically charged stones is reported to be able to light a two-bedroom house for at least two months. A gram of the stones which have been equated to the fictitious state of Wakanda’s vibranium, is thought to light a bulb for more than 72 hours.

However, Twitter users who commented on the videos expressed scepticism and accused the makers of the video of staging the discovery.

Below are some of the comments:

@KushyJinx:

I wasn’t born yesterday you could see the TIG torch underneath the Rock and the guys wearing electrified gloving yeah come on don’t play with your tools underneath the rocks and tell people that you have electrified Stone you don’t.

@GigiValenti:

Oh yeah, this stone exists in Nigeria as well. A local prince send me an email and offered me to invest before this goes mainstream. So i transferred $10,000 to him. I’m gonna be riiiiccccchhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

@c3llc0de:

This is so stupid. I can’t believe so many people think it’s real. If there are positive and negative points on the rock, why doesn’t it self short and dump it’s energy via heat? It would have to have an insulator between the positive and negative points for this to work.

@Gorkluce:

Can someone tell me how these rocks not shocking you even little bit if they are charged? I think the element is highly reactional to metals perhaps? There is no difference between touching the two end of the cable and holding it with 2 finger. Human body is also conductive.

APOSTLE JOHNSON SULEMAN REVEAL 7 KIND OF CHURCHES IN THE WORLD!

There are actually 21 kinds of churches in the world but am going to give you seven for today apostle began

Now before I actually let the cat out of the bag, let me give you the definition of a church.

A CHURCH: can be best define as a building where Christians go to worship God. but i can tell you that today church no longer worship God, some worship money, business, varrious trisp abroad, clothes etc child of God materialism has cripped into the church of christ, the true love of God is gradually falling away from the christain faith.if you are a sincere believer[christain]ask yourself this question, is this how you where when you newly gave your life to Christ? if not is time to cry-out for help from above!

SEVEN KIND OF CHURCHES IN THE WORLD.

Gods servant began to analyze them one after the other in today deliverance service at Auchi the Headquarters of the omega fire ministries worldwide.

1. THE MORTUARY CHURCH: these are the kind of church you will enter and your spiritual life will just die totally. the mistakes most people make here is that, this is my mothers church where i was brought up i cant leave, and you are wasting away?

2.OCCULTIC CHURCHES: Child of God i will like you to know that we have a lot of native doctors in the alter who are deceiving people all because their herbalism in the village is no longer paying. So be careful. Some of them go as far as bury charms under their pulpit to grow their congregation.

3.VANITY CHURCHES: This particular church is the worldly kind of church where all source of evil are been done, and you hear them say is a free world, you can serve God the way you like and still make heaven.sir no! you will surelly make hell fire if you believe that.

4.MODERN CHURCH: This particular churches make use of laptop, ipad on the altar, it is not so from the begin my bible says search the scripture not punch the scripture.

5.BUSINESS CHURCHES: if you visit such church you will discover that the pastor mostly emphasises on business strategies or you can say entrepreneurship. Please dont quote me wrong am not saying encouraging entreprenue is bad in the church, you should have a limit to that.

6.PRESIDENTIAL CHURCHES: These are churches many people run to for connection or access into any position they aspire for.

7.COMBAT CHURCH: These are churches that fight any man of God they see on tv. no other pastor seems to be real in their eyes, all other pastors are fake except them.

CHRIST HAS NOMINATED US,BUT WE DENOMINATED OURSELVES,WE ARE ONE BODY IN CHRIST.

A WEDDING THAT MAY MEND BROKEN BRIDGES as Mr James Ndambo gives away his daughter and a brand new land rover gift to son in law

A WEDDING THAT MAY MEND BROKEN BRIDGES as Mr James Ndambo gives away his daughter and a brand new land rover gift to son in law.

By Miles B. Sampa, MP (23.01.2023)

So the Minister of Community Development Hon Doreen Mwamba was a guest if not the guest of honour at the wedding of Charmaine and Emmanuel Sichembe.

Charmaine being daughter to the My Home Town (MHT) Chairman Mr James Ndambo. The wedding was at the Sandton convention center in Johannesburg South Africa. Classic if not wedding of the year already from what I could pick up from social media.

Renowned names travelled from various countries in Africa to be part of the Ndambo and Sichembe families as they their holy matrimony celebrations. In his usual unique classy of doing things, Chairman Ndambo surprised his son in law with a brand new latest model Land Rover defender as their wedding gift.

Notably missing at the wedding however was my brother the Southern Province Minister Honourable Cornelius Mweetwa that is also MP for Choma central constituency where Mr James Ndambo was born and is also center for his MHT projects. We watched on New Year eve smiles from Hon Mweetwa as he switched on the MHT funded street lights in Choma. It would have therefore made good viewing to notice him aswell at the MHT linked wedding.

Prior to the wedding there was Chilangamulilo (pre wedding traditional function) in Lusaka and it too looked very classy graced by a number of celebrity artists like Macky 2, Chef, IDC and others. Notably missing however was the Father to the bride Mr Ndambo. He could not travel to Lusaka given the state machinery harassment him and his MHT activities received mid last year.

It was therefore gratifying to see my sister the Honourable Minister Doreen Mwamba travel to SA to grace wedding hosted by Mr Ndambo. I have massive experience both at Council and Central government level as former Mayor of Lusaka and former deputy Minister in various portfolios. Within these roles I came to learn how the office of the President at Statehouse and it’s cabinet secretariat operates. No Minister dare leave the Country without a written request submitted to Statehouse and a written signed permission from the President to travel.

It therefore follows that Hon Minister Mwamba wrote to President HH seeking authorization to travel to the Ndambo daughter wedding in SA. We can also safely deduce that President HH signed a letter authorizing the Minister to travel.

In SA at the wedding one could easily notice that the Hon Minister was availed extra VVIP status and I would be surprised if she was actually accommodated at the iconic Michelangelo hotel where only the who is who of the World dare stay there as it is very expensive. That’s how much importance and respect our Minister may have been accorded by the Ndambo family.

It’s President HH that I wish to single out here and commend him for having rose to the occasion and authorize his Minister Hon Doreen Mwamba to grace the wedding in SA. We can deduce therein that either the ‘beef’ (misunderstanding) between the President and the MHT chairman James Ndambo is behind us or it’s just that President HH places family or children links superior to other real or perceived misunderstandings.

Which ever the case may the gesture of sending the Honourable Minister Doreen Mwamba to the Ndambo family wedding be the beginning of a renewed seemingly lost relationship between the President and his brother Chairman James Ndambo. I hereby write because if that happens then we can have hope that sooner than later the much missed My Home Town Ubuntu projects could recommence not only in Choma but also Matero and other parts of Zambia given we have pending application letters submitted.

Well done Mr President and Welldone Minister Doreen Mwamba. Mr James Ndambo is one of us (Zambians) and we should not paint him black but embrace him at every opportunity.

Amen (May it be so).

Col Galamukani’s last message..

Be Intentional and Ruthless in 2023!

My monthly base income is a minimum of K20,000.00 even without doing any hard work in a particular month.

My potential monthly income is an average of K100,000.00 if I decided to work to my fullest capacity all things being equal. I am incapacitated and half the time, I can not operate to my fullest capacity due to my health condition.

When I was working at full capacity, I would grind my lungs out! I would travel long hours to my client’s location without flinching. I worked very hard. Extremely hard. I was ruthless. Ruth, my wife is my witness. Now, my work output is limited to my capacity to handle. It’s not debatable. It’s in public domain.

I have a few properties dotted around Lusaka, books I sell nearly everyday, one-on-one mentorship I conduct every other day, pork I sell from our farm on a frequent basis and consultancy income that still comes through even in my present condition. My endevour is to ensure I have a considerable monthly income enough to sustain me and my family, a comfortable lifestyle.

Ask yourself the questions – “How can I increase my capacity to work in 2023 with my full healthy condition?”
“What didn’t I do in 2022 that I could do better in 2023”?

Get to your closet this week. Lock yourself up for 3 hours. Interrogate yourself. Look into the mirror and slap yourself. Look into the mirror again and scream “I will be ruthless in 2023”!!!!!🗣️🗣️

When you take a deep introspection about yourself, you will discover that you had all the tools in 2022, but were less intentional and ruthless about your pursuits!

What I have discovered is that we have all the tools required to succeed at anything, but we are not deliberate about our actions.

The only difference between you and me is intentionality and ruthlessness!

Be deliberate in 2023. Be action oriented in 2023. Be ruthless in 2023.

If I were to advise you on only 3 things you must consider in 2023, do the following:

♣️ Get yourself a mentor
♣️ Be a learning machine
♣️ Learn all things about money and its management!

Happy new year!

I love you with the love of Christ and wish you nothing but an excellent year!

Galamukani!

GIANT KILLER OR JUST ANOTHER ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: THE CASE OF SOCIALIST PARTY

GIANT KILLER OR JUST ANOTHER ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: THE CASE OF SOCIALIST PARTY

By GEORGE CHOMBA

In the aftermath of the Local Government by-elections held last Friday, 20th January, the politically charged may be forced to discuss the Socialist Party’s victory in two-folds: is the Socialist Party a giant killer in the making or simply an ‘elephant in the room’.

Those are two questions that come to mind when a ‘new kid on the block’ upsets old guards.

Just think of it. The UPND has been in existence for 25 years while Patriotic Front has a life-history of 22 years and it ruled Zambia for ten years before its defeat in 2021.

For those in the dark about the journey of this story, well, they are welcome to the ‘google map’ of politicking after an election.

The Socialist Party has beaten the UPND and the PF respectively to win one of the four ward by-elections which were on offer by the Electoral Commission of Zambia after the seats fell vacant either through resignations or death.

Kapanda ward in Lukashya Constituency, Kasama District was one of the four seats and Mr Ronald Mulenga won it for the Socialist Party.

The Kapanda victory is an addition to the five others won in the 12th August, 2021 general elections.

According to Electoral Commission of Zambia records, Mr Mulenga joins other Socialist Party councillors in the names of Bright Mukupa for Mwiche ward, Shiwang’andu constituency; Mumba Zulu for Katipa ward, Nyimba constituency; Kelvin Mwenda for Killeen ward, Mufumbwe constituency, Mike Musenge for Chifwenge ward, Chilubi constituency and Eddy Mwandu for Lukusashi ward, Muchinga constituency, Serenje district.

This means that out of 1,858 local government seats in Zambia, the Socialist Party has ‘bragging rights’ for six wards.
When a political party is being gifted seats in governance structures, especially at grass root level away from the general election, it raises the question whether political fortunes are changing.

The results of the four by-elections were announced on Saturday but probably because of the activities of the weekend, you know Chilanga Mulilo, the English Premier League and simply the ability to cool the throats, the breaking news overshadowed the performance of Dr Fred M’membe’s political party, formed in 2018.

But for the Socialist Party, the win by Mr Mulenga is a political statement which the ruling UPND and its predecessor can’t easily brush away and ignore.

The UPND and the PF should be scratching their heads whether in the Socialist Party, the giant killer is born.
However, if the Socialist Party victory in Kapanda is just an elephant in the room, then the incumbent and its predecessor, have nothing to worry about.

The outcome of the January 20 by-elections are a talk over a drink and soon the topic will be discussion of the past.

But the differences in the result margin should turn heads. Mr Mulenga scooped the Kapanda ward by obtaining 890 votes while the ruling UPND candidate Moses Kapambwe got 578 votes.

The former ruling party, Patriotic Front, came out third with 335 votes.

Herein ‘sleeps’ the question for the ruling UPND on what has gone wrong for the Socialist Party, to emerge winners amidst major Government projects?

When the UPND came into power in August 2021, its first national budget of 2022 was anchored on ‘honey and butter’.

The UPND extended the free education system to carter for Grade ones to 12s from the initial Grade One to Nine.

The Constituency Development Funds (CDF) which was only 1.6 million Kwacha received a boost to 25.7 million Kwacha, for community projects and school bursaries.

In fact, in the year of the by-election which is this year, and this January, the CDF is now 28.3 million kwacha.

Last year, President Hichilema’s administration employed 30,000 teachers and a further 11,200 government workers in the health sector and these have been posted to all provinces, districts and constituencies.

All these Government programmes and others, certainly must have had a feel good effect in the electorate in the four by-elections including Kapanda ward to make the ruling party look good for a victory dance.

But it appears the Socialist Party had a better message which could have drowned the UPND ‘praise singers’.

The result should also haunt the former ruling party, the Patriotic Front, which appears to have changed the slogan from ‘Amaka’ to ‘Alebwelelapo’.

The PF can’t hold the bragging right of being popular when a five year old political party can beat them in their ‘bedroom’ of Lukashya Constituency.

For the uninitiated, the Kapanda ward is in Lukashya Constituency where the Member of Parliament is George Chisanga who is Patriotic Front.

If Mr Chisanga can’t win a ward by-election in his own constituency, then he must be worried about his status and that of PF in 2026.

Some may argue that these were just local government elections, but think of it that the Socialist Party touched the hearts of the grassroots, away from the general election?

Indeed, what becomes of the PF assuming the Socialist Party is transforming into a giant killer?

Our mentors in this profession normally argue that one can’t fact check the future but a term of office is never everlasting and the question of whether the Socialist Party is becoming a giant killer or just an ‘elephant in the room” will soon be answered.

Ministry of Energy and ZESCO defy HH instruction on Kalungwishi Hydro Power Project

0

Daily Nation reports that over the development of the Kalungwishi Hydro Power Project which they want to seize from Zambian developers, the Ministry of Energy and Zesco have defied President Hakainde Hichilema’s guidance that the state-owned power utility company and Luapula Hydro Power Corporation Limited should consider the possibility of entering into an equitable partnership for the development of Kalungwishi Hydro Power Project in the national interest, sources have told the Daily Nation.

Instead, the Ministry of Energy and Zesco have demanded a complete takeover of the Luapula Hydro Power Corporation Limited, sources from both the Ministry of Energy and Zesco have confirmed.

President Hichilema’s desire and efforts to have the Zambian-owned Kalungwishi Hydro Power project fully developed are allegedly being frustrated and undermined by Zesco managing director Victor Mapani and Peter Kapala, the Minister of Energy.

“It seems our boss’s earlier request to buy shares in Luapula Hydro and its subsequent rejection is what is still angering him such that he’s doing everything possible to block a local company that has been pushing this development for years. This Kalungwishi Hydro project started many years ago. I was already here and I know how political this has been,” the Zesco source revealed.

The development of the Kalungwishi Hydro Power Project has in the last two years been shrouded in a matrix of ownership struggle and the Daily Nation has been informed that Mr Mapani had offered a complete buyoff of the Luapula Hydro Power Corporation Limited.

Zesco sources have revealed that instructions were recently given at the highest level that an amicable solution be found to the satisfaction of all stakeholders for the development of Kalungwishi Hydro Power Project.

However, according to the sources; “those instructions seem to be falling on deaf ears because we can see here at our offices that some actions are being done in order to fulfill some people’s selfish personal interests. They are pulling in a different direction from where our President wants to lead Zambia.”

The country is experiencing an acute power deficit which has it undergo excruciating long hours of load shedding and President Hichilema had to travel to Abu Dhabi in search of solutions to the power crisis whilst his technocrats are busy frustrating his efforts on the ground.

According to the sources, this is despite Luapula Hydro Power Corporation acquiring 100 percent funding for the project and partnering with one of the largest Hydro Power Developers in the world.

President Hichilema’s desire is that Government, through Zesco, should partner with Luapula Hydro Power Corporation but the Ministry of Energy and the power utility are demanding a complete takeover of the Independent Power Producer, the sources revealed.
