Storm In Teacup (Ncwala 2022)- Dickson Jere

Storm In Teacup (Ncwala 2022)
By Dickson Jere

To pull off such a successful event is no mean achievement – I mean the 2022 N’wala ceremony! The attendance was unprecedented! Kudos to the organizing committee as well as various government agencies and sponsors who made it happen. Such big events, always, are a nightmare. Protocol gaffes here and there are doted especially when the President of the Republic is in attendance. Having both part of the Ncwala Organizing Committee before and later on part of the State House Presidential close-party, I speak from my little experience.

In 2017, FAZ President invited me as a VVIP to watch the Under 20 AFCON finals at Heroes stadium. Few minutes before the game, a protocol officer politely requested me to move out of my seat because the President was coming with a bigger delegation than earlier anticipated. I needed to give room! Having worked in the Presidency, I obliged to be moved from VVIP stand to VIP. I felt embarrassed but I understood. In protocol, we say “Presidency always takes precedence”.

The team at Ncwala did an excellent job given the circumstances. Efforts were made to make every invited guest to feel special. I gave up my seat when I saw one prominent person standing few meters away from the VVIP.

You see, when a President is attending a public event such as football and Ncwala, so many things are taken into consideration. Protocol, security, movements and all.
So the person who ushered PF acting President Given Lubinda to the VVIP pavilion had good intentions. He recognized him as one of our leaders in the nation. But again even the person who equally moved him out of that seat and good intentions too! The seat was earmarked for a Cabinet Minister who was in the Presidential delegation. Such things do happen in protocol just like I was moved out if the football VVIP pavilion when I had a card. Presidential security and protocol follow certain rules and I was privy to know some of them when I worked in the presidency. An apology could have been rendered by the organizers quietly and another seat found.

Remember the Kuomboka ceremony of 2017? When the Presidential convoy and that the opposition leader then almost collided on a perilously narrow road, I blamed the police. I penned an article in which I questioned why the Presidential route was not cleared and allowed such an unfortunate event. In short, Presidential security and protocol takes precedence! It is what It is! The only thing that who may be affected should be politely explained to and moved to another place nicely.

I like Ncwala and I rarely miss.
Few years ago, I was at the Mutenguleni arena. It was packed and the President was in attendance. The UPND delegation was headed by its Vice President Dr Canicius Banda. He was put far-away from the VVIP. Very far! When I noticed him, I walked to him and asked him to follow me so that I could let him greet the President and other dignitaries. When I met him last year, that was the first thing he reminded!
“Thank you for what you did that day…” he said.

Anyway, let us talk about the ceremony. It was beautiful! We had a good time. It was also historic because it was the first ceremony to be graced by the 7th President Hakainde Hichilema. The ladies looked good in those South African inspired designs. And we, the madodas, wore our animals neatly! Wow…check out the pictures by Presidential Photographer Chellah – I think the Ncwala committee should engage him and produce a pictorial!
The issue of the seating arrangement, for now, is just a storm in the teacup. It is an regrettable incidence but should not take away the bigger picture of the success of the event !
Bayethe!

RTSA To Suspend Bus Operator, Driver For Defying The Provisions Of The Law

RTSA TO SUSPEND BUS OPERATOR, DRIVER FOR DEFYING THE PROVISIONS OF THE LAW

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) recorded a fatal road traffic accident yesterday at about 22:29 hours along the Great North Road in Mpika District of Muchinga Province involving a bus in which seven (7) passengers died on the spot while 35 others sustained serious injuries.

The RTSA, the Zambia Police, the Fire Brigade and Paramedics from Chilonga Mission Hospital conducted the accident rescue operation throughout the night and part of this morning to retrieve the trapped bodies.

Preliminary accident investigations have revealed that the accident happened when the driver of the bus, registration number ABE 5433 belonging to Nicpro Trading Limited lost control after hitting a pothole and thereafter plunged into a stream at a place called Kapoko 48 Kilometers South of Mpika. The bus was heading to Lusaka from Nakonde.

The accident investigations have further established that the driver and the operator neglected or failed to ensure that the bus in question was parked at 22:00 hours as indicated by the Global Position System (GPS) report.

The RTSA is of the view that driver and the operator defied the provisions of the Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 76 of 2016 and Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 51 of 2021 which restricts the movement of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) at night, thereby putting the lives of the passengers in danger resulting in loss of lives which could have been avoided.

From the foregoing, the Agency has given seven (07) days ultimatum to Nicpro Trading to show cause why the Road Service Licence should not be suspended for violating the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002, a condition upon which the operator’s licence was granted. The Agency has also summoned the driver of the bus to show cause why his Driving Licence should not be revoked for endangering the lives of the passengers.

And RTSA Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Gladwell Banda, has described the crash as unfortunate stating that the constant loss of lives is a source of concern and has since warned that the Agency will enforce the provisions of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 in totality to mitigate the recent spike in road crashes.

Mr. Banda has conveyed a message of condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured passengers a quick recovery.

Russia cannot be denied right to self-defence – M’membe

0

By Charles Tembo

UKRAINE is the victim of a tug of war between Moscow and the West, Socialist Party president Fred M’membe has observed.

But Dr M’membe says the Russian Federation’s security concerns are understandable but they shouldn’t lead to war.

He argued that Ukraine “is certainly not the frontline of democracy”.

“The way out, however late the hour, is to address that context, commit Ukraine not joining NATO, and to a dial-down of militaristic showboating by the world’s most powerful and dangerous military alliance,” Dr M’membe said in a Facebook posting.

He said the Russian Federation cannot be denied the right to self-defence. But this conflict should be resolved diplomatically.

Dr M’membe urged the United States and NATO to seriously and realistically address the well-founded claims for security guarantees of the Russian Federation.

“We urge diplomatic solution through constructive and respectful dialogue and preserve international peace and security. The world is aware of the presence of neo-Nazi units like the Azov Battalion in the Ukrainian National Guard, of the torch-lit processions in Kiev honouring the Waffen SS, of the Ukrainian government’s recognition of national days to honour anti-semitic mass murderers like Simon Petliura and Stepan Bandera. But this can be dealt with without resorting to war. Ukraine is certainly not the frontline of democracy,” he said. “We know how the United States and the EU connived to have the elected Ukrainian government overthrown in the Maidan coup of 2014. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky was later elected on pledges to negotiate a peace with Russia over the Donbass and, domestically, on a platform largely opposed to the wave of neoliberal economic reforms unleashed by Maidan. He attacked the privatising healthcare reforms of US-imported health minister Ulana Suprun and the “illegal privatisations” of Ukrainian land. In power, he has been unable to act on these positions. Further land privatisation, opposed by three-quarters of Ukrainians, has been forced through at the insistence of the EU, so giant European agribusiness can buy up farmland and convert it en masse to monocultures, especially sunflower production for oil.”

Dr M’membe noted that Ukrainians have got poorer year by year.

“The country has the highest poverty rates in Europe. The land that was once the breadbasket of Europe now mainly exports super-exploited labour to its neighbours. It is unsurprising that Zelensky has been unable to negotiate peace in the Donbass. His frontline there has been manned by heavily armed fascists with no interest in peace. Ukraine’s President – whose tearful address in his native Russian to the Russian people included the proud recollection of his grandfather’s service in the Red Army – may not have liked these neo-Nazis, but has not been able to stem the rewriting of history demanded by Ukraine’s “Westernisers”.

Ukraine is the victim of a tug of war between Moscow and the West,” noted Dr M’membe. “It is no apologia for Moscow to point out that by stifling the Minsk peace process, by their annual military exercises from the Baltic to the Black Sea, by rejecting out of hand any idea that NATO might agree to negotiate troop and missile reductions in Europe, Western powers have engaged in a brinkmanship that has now exploded. The way out, however late the hour, is to address that context, commit to Ukraine not joining NATO, and to a dial-down of militaristic showboating by the world’s most powerful and dangerous military alliance. A war between nuclear-armed Russia and the West does not bear thinking about.”/

Zanu-PF thugs unleash violence at Chamisa rally, kill one, dozens injured

0

Zanu-PF thugs launched a violent attack on Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa’s supporters during a rally in Kwekwe which allegedly left one person dead and dozens injured.

The opposition party officials confirmed that many have been brutally injured after being smashed by metal bars and stones.

Chamisa, who was addressing thousands of his supporters at a star rally ahead of the March 26 by-election, was forced to pause while party youths were handling the situation.

The stone-throwing thugs were subdued by CCC youths. But one party supporter allegedly suffered fatal injuries and died while dozens were badly injured before the arrival of Red Cross medics.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere accused Zanu-PF of causing the violence.

She said: “ALERT Zanu-PF youths have stormed the Yellow Kwekwe rally and are beating CCC supporters up with iron bars. Details to follow.

“Sadly, one person has suffered fatal injuries at the Yellow Kwekwe where Zanu PF unleashed an orgy of violence in the middle of President Chamisa’s speech. The deceased (name withheld) was pierced in the side. The Zanu-PF thug used a spear. Rest In Peace.”

“Red Cross staffers have administered first aid to our bleeding supporters following violent attacks by Zanu-PF thugs wielding machetes and iron bars. Many were hospitalized.

“President Nelson Chamisa has called on our members to remain calm. Police are protecting the thugs.”

Mahere said in another Tweet: “Zanu-PF thugs have unleashed an orgy of violence onto our supporters at the Yellow Kwekwe rally. Many have been brutally injured. The attackers charged at our supports with metal bars and weapons.”

Zanu-PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday presided over his party’s rally and everything ended peacefully. While at the same rally, his deputy Constantino Chiwenga warned that the ruling party was unflinching in its resolve to ‘crush’ the CCC ‘like lice’.

“I have heard others here saying down with triple C, let me assure you that there is nothing that it can achieve, you see how we crush lice with a stone,” Chiwenga said.

“You put it on a flat stone and then flatten it to the extent that even flies will not make a meal out of it.”- Nehanda Radio

Chinese Banks imposes limits on Russian financing

0

everal Chinese public banks are limiting financing to purchase raw materials from Russia for fear of Western sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine, Bloomberg news agency reported on Saturday (Feb 26).

China and Russia have strengthened their ties considerably since Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and subsequent Western sanctions.

To power its growth, the Asian giant has also increased its purchases of Russian commodities, with about 30 per cent of Russian oil and gas now sold to China.

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, at least two of China’s largest state-owned banks, ICBC and Bank of China, are restricting funding for the purchase of Russian commodities, Bloomberg said.

The decision was taken for fear that allowing funding could be perceived as support for Moscow’s invasion and risk sanctions from the United States and its allies, the US news agency said, citing unidentified sources.

Bloomberg said the move may only be temporary.

ICBC is the world’s largest bank by assets, while Bank of China is the country’s largest commercial bank for currency trading.

US sanctions could potentially deprive them of access to the dollar.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday sparked a wave of international sanctions against Moscow, mainly from Western countries.

Washington has, among other things, imposed sanctions on energy giant Gazprom and other large Russian companies, which will no longer be able to raise money on Western financial markets.

China is walking a diplomatic tightrope over the Ukraine conflict.

It does not want to directly oppose its ally Russia.

While visiting Beijing for the Winter Olympics earlier in February, Putin signed important agreements with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The two countries notably agreed to strengthen their cooperation in the financial sector and on the supply of gas.

But while Beijing has not condemned the invasion of Ukraine, it has also stopped short of outright support.

China abstained on Friday’s United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine and demanding the immediate withdrawal of its troops, which Russia vetoed.

On Saturday the Chinese embassy in Ukraine advised its citizens to “refrain … from displaying signs of identification”, just days after telling those leaving Kyiv to clearly fix a Chinese flag to their vehicles.

President Vladimir Putin says he has ordered the Russian military to put its nuclear forces on “special alert”

0

In a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces put on high alert Sunday in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by leading NATO powers.

The order to put Russia’s nuclear weapons in an increased state of readiness for launch raised fears that the crisis could boil over into nuclear warfare, whether by design or miscalculation.

Amid the mounting tensions, Ukraine announced that a delegation would meet with Russian officials for talks. But the Kremlin’s ultimate intentions toward Ukraine — and what steps might be enough to satisfy Moscow — remained unclear.

The fast-moving developments came as Russian troops drew closer to Kyiv, a city of almost 3 million, street fighting broke out in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, and strategic ports in the country’s south came under pressure from the invading forces. Ukrainian defenders put up stiff resistance that appeared to slow the invasion.

Putin, in giving the nuclear alert directive, cited not only statements by NATO members but the hard-hitting financial sanctions imposed by the West against Russia, including the Russian leader himself.

Speaking at a meeting with his top officials, Putin told his defense minister and the chief of the military’s General Staff to put nuclear forces in a “special regime of combat duty.”

“Western countries aren’t only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country,” Putin said in televised comments.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Putin is resorting to a pattern he used in the weeks before launching the invasion, “which is to manufacture threats that don’t exist in order to justify further aggression.” She told ABC’s “This Week” that Russia has not been under threat from NATO or Ukraine.

“And we’re going to stand up,” Psaki said, adding: “We have the ability to defend ourselves, but we also need to call out what we’re seeing here.”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told CNN, in reaction to Putin’s decision to put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert: “This is dangerous rhetoric. This is a behavior which is irresponsible.”

The practical meaning of Putin’s order was not immediately clear. Russia and the United States typically have land- and submarine-based nuclear forces on alert and prepared for combat at all times, but nuclear-capable bombers and other aircraft are not.

If Putin is arming or otherwise raising the nuclear combat readiness of his bombers, or if he is ordering more ballistic missile submarines to sea, then the United States might feel compelled to respond in kind, said Hans Kristensen, a nuclear analyst at the Federation of American Scientists. That would mark a worrisome escalation, he said.

Max Bergmann, a former State Department official, called Putin’s talk predictable but dangerous saber rattling. “Things could spiral out of control,” said Bergmann, now a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

Around the same time as Putin’s nuclear move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office said on the Telegram messaging app that the two sides would meet at an unspecified location on the Belarusian border. The message did not give a precise time for the meeting.

The announcement came hours after Russia announced that its delegation had flown to Belarus to await talks. Ukrainian officials initially rejected the move, saying any talks should take place elsewhere than Belarus, since it has allowed its territory to be used by Russian troops as a staging ground for the invasion.

Earlier Sunday, the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, was eerily quiet after huge explosions lit up the morning sky and authorities reported blasts at one of the airports. Only an occasional car appeared on a deserted main boulevard as a strict 39-hour curfew kept people off the streets. Terrified residents instead hunkered down in homes, underground garages and subway stations in anticipation of a full-scale Russian assault.

“The past night was tough – more shelling, more bombing of residential areas and civilian infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said.

Until Sunday, Russia’s troops had remained on the outskirts of Kharkiv, a city of 1.4 million about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) south of the border with Russia, while other forces rolled past to press the offensive deeper into Ukraine.

Videos posted on Ukrainian media and social networks showed Russian vehicles moving across Kharkiv and Russian troops roaming the city in small groups. One showed Ukrainian troops firing at the Russians and damaged Russian light utility vehicles abandoned nearby.

The images underscored the determined resistance from Ukrainian forces. Ukrainians have volunteered en masse to help defend their country, taking guns distributed by authorities and preparing firebombs to fight Russian forces.

Ukraine is also releasing prisoners with military experience who want to fight for the country, authorities said.

Putin hasn’t disclosed his ultimate plans, but Western officials believe he is determined to overthrow Ukraine’s government and replace it with a regime of his own, redrawing the map of Europe and reviving Moscow’s Cold War-era influence.

The pressure on strategic ports in the south of Ukraine appeared aimed at seizing control of the country’s coastline. A Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said Russian forces had blocked the cities of Kherson on the Black Sea and the port of Berdyansk on the Azov Sea.

He said the Russian forces also took control of an airbase near Kherson and the Azov Sea city of Henichesk. Ukrainian authorities also reported fighting near Odesa, Mykolaiv and other areas.

Cutting Ukraine’s access to its sea ports would deal a major blow to the country’s economy. It could also allow Moscow to build a land corridor to Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014 and until now was connected to Russia by a 19-kilometer (12-mile) bridge.

Ukrainian military deputy commander Lt.-Gen. Yevhen Moisiuk sounded a defiant note in a message aimed at Russian troops.

“Unload your weapons, raise your hands so that our servicemen and civilians can understand that you have heard us. This is your ticket home,” Moisiuk said in a Facebook video.

The number of casualties so far from Europe’s largest land conflict since World War II remained unclear amid the fog of combat.

Ukraine’s health minister reported Saturday that 198 people, including three children, had been killed and more than 1,000 others wounded. It was unclear whether those figures included both military and civilian casualties. Russia has not released any casualty information.

Ukraine’s U.N. ambassador, Sergiy Kyslytsya, tweeted Saturday that Ukraine appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross “to facilitate repatriation of thousands of bodies of Russian soldiers.” An accompanying chart claimed 3,500 Russian troops have been killed.

Laetitia Courtois, the Red Cross’ permanent observer to the U.N., said the organization could not immediately confirm those numbers.

The U.N. refugee agency said Sunday that about 368,000 Ukrainians have arrived in neighboring countries since the invasion started Thursday. The U.N. has estimated the conflict could produce as many as 4 million refugees.

The West is working to equip the outnumbered Ukrainian forces with weapons and ammunition while punishing Russia with far-reaching sanctions intended to further isolate Moscow.

Over the weekend, the U.S. pledged an additional $350 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including anti-tank weapons, body armor and small arms. Germany said it would send missiles and anti-tank weapons.

The U.S., European Union and Britain also agreed to block selected Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial messaging system, which moves money around more than 11,000 banks and other financial institutions worldwide. They also agreed to impose restrictive measures on Russia’s central bank.

Putin sent troops into Ukraine after building up a force of almost 200,000 troops along the country’s borders. He claims the West has failed to take seriously Russia’s security concerns about NATO, the Western military alliance that Ukraine aspires to join. But he has also expressed scorn about Ukraine’s right to exist as an independent state.

Russia claims its assault on Ukraine is aimed only at military targets, but bridges, schools and residential neighborhoods have been hit.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, said Ukraine is gathering evidence of shelling of residential areas, kindergartens and hospitals to submit to an international war crimes court.

Isachenkov reported from Moscow. Ellen Knickmeyer, Robert Burns and Hope Yen in Washington; Francesca Ebel, Josef Federman and Andrew Drake in Kyiv; Mstyslav Chernov and Nic Dumitrache in Mariupol, Ukraine; and other AP journalists from around the world contributed to this report.

Kenya’s ruling party joins hands with opposition ahead of polls

0

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday said his party had joined an opposition coalition ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections in August in a bid to clean up politics of “crooks”.

The announcement came after Kenyatta’s anointed successor William Ruto, who wants to contest the presidential election, was sacked from the ruling Jubilee party.

“I heard one person saying that there is nowhere in the world where a government unites with and supports the opposition,” Kenyatta said, announcing that Jubilee was joining the Azimio la Umoja (Quest for Unity) coalition headed by veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.

“Kenya will be the example. We are mature enough to distinguish between politics and the needs of the people.”

The East African powerhouse has traditionally been ruled by presidents from the dominant Kikuyu tribe like Kenyatta or the Kalenjin tribe like Ruto.

This year’s contest is shaping up to be a two-horse race between Ruto and Raila, a mainstay of Kenyan politics from the Luo community.

Ruto was initially anointed by Kenyatta as his successor but found himself marginalised after arch-foes Kenyatta and Odinga announced a truce in 2018.

“We are looking to create a movement that will deliver the country,” Kenyatta said.

The Azimio la Umoja coalition is expected to pick its preferred presidential candidate in two weeks.

But many observers say Odinga’s nomination is a foregone conclusion.

“We are in this to restore the soul and secure the future of our people,” Odinga said on Saturday.

“If we stand together, I am sure nothing will defeat us.”

The 77-year-old — a former political prisoner and prime minister — will then likely head into the polls without his usual fiery anti-establishment image.

– ‘One strong man’ –

Kenyatta for his part said the coalition “will discuss and pick one strong man to face the crooks on the other side”.

With its diverse population and ethnic voting blocs, elections in Kenya have often been marred by violence.

More than 1,100 Kenyans lost their lives in 2007 when a disputed election result sparked tribal violence.

The rapprochement between Odinga and Kenyatta came about after post-election fighting in 2017 left dozens of people dead.

The pair unsuccessfully tried to introduce sweeping constitutional changes as a way to end repeated cycles of election violence.

The reforms — popularly known as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI)– proposed expanding the executive and parliament to more evenly divide the spoils of victory.

But it was seen by critics as a way to enable Kenyatta — a two-term president who cannot run for a third — to remain in power by establishing the post of prime minister.

The government has appealed a court ruling that rejected the proposals and said Kenyatta could even be sued in a civil court for launching the process. -AFP

Ukraine conflict: Britain sending more arms as fighting reaches Kyiv

0

Ukrainian forces repulsed a Russian attack on Kyiv but “sabotage groups” infiltrated the capital, officials said Saturday, as Ukraine reported 198 civilians deaths, including children, following Russia’s invasion.

A defiant Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed his pro-Western country would never give in to the Kremlin even as Russia said it had fired cruise missiles at military targets.

With explosions echoing around Kyiv on the third day of Russia’s assault, Zelensky spoke in a video message, wearing olive green military-style clothing and looking tired but determined.

“I am here. We will not lay down any weapons. We will defend our state, because our weapons are our truth,” he said.

“Our truth is that this is our land, our country, our children and we will protect all of this.”

Ignoring warnings from the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin unleashed a full-scale invasion that the UN refugee agency said has forced almost 116,000 people to flee to neighbouring countries.

Tens of thousands more are estimated to be displaced within Ukraine, with many on the move to less affected western areas of the country.

In Kyiv, residents took shelter in the subway system and in cellars and basements.

“We thought something like this might happen but we were hoping until the end that it wouldn’t,” Irina Butyak told AFP in one shelter.

“We were hoping that common sense and common decency would prevail. Well, it didn’t,” said the 38-year-old teacher, who hoped she would be able to escape soon to western Ukraine.

Ukrainian Health Minister Viktor Lyashko said 198 civilians, including three children, had been killed in the conflict and 1,115 wounded.

In Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron warned that the world must brace for a long war.

“This crisis will last, this war will last and all the crises that come with it will have lasting consequences,” Macron said.

“We must be prepared”.

After speaking to Macron, Zelensky tweeted to thank “partners” for sending weapons and equipment.

Several NATO members have sent weapons and ammunition to Ukraine in recent weeks, including Britain, the United States and ex-communist countries in Eastern Europe.

In another video address, the 44-year-old leader also said that his country had “derailed” the Russian plan of overthrowing him and establishing a puppet state in Ukraine.

– Air raid sirens and birdsong –

In the early hours of Saturday, AFP reporters in Kyiv heard occasional blasts of what soldiers said were artillery and Grad missiles being fired in an area northwest of the city centre.

There were also loud explosions in the centre.

Emergency services said a high-rise apartment block was hit by shelling overnight, posting a picture that showed a hole covering at least five floors blasted into the side of the building.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said the building had been hit by a missile.

“The night was difficult, but there are no Russian troops in the capital,” he said.

“The enemy is trying to break into the city, in particular from Gostomel, Zhytomyr, where the aggressors are neutralised,” he said, referring to two settlements to the northwest and west of the city.

“Now in Kyiv there are, unfortunately, sabotage groups, there were several clashes,” he said.

Hours later, AFP saw a destroyed Ukrainian military truck in the city centre and a civilian volunteer digging a trench for soldiers.

Ukrainian army tanks were also seen manoeuvring all over the centre but the streets were mostly empty and the centre silent except for the sound of air raid sirens and birdsong.

The city said it was toughening a curfew in place and anyone on the streets after 5:00 pm would be considered “members of the enemy’s sabotage and reconnaissance groups”.

– Russian plan ‘derailed’ –

Zelensky on Saturday said that Ukraine had “derailed” Russia’s attack plan and urged Russians to pressure Putin into ending the war.

When he announced the assault in a pre-dawn television statement on Thursday, Putin called it a “special military operation” aimed at defending Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The separatists have been fighting Ukrainian government forces in the east for eight years in a conflict in which more than 14,000 people have been killed.

Russia’s communications regulator on Saturday told independent media to remove reports describing it as an “assault, invasion, or declaration of war”.

In a statement, the regulator accused the media outlets of spreading “untrue information” about the shelling of Ukrainian cities by the Russian army and civilian deaths.

– ‘Point of no return’ –

But Russia has brushed off international condemnation and increasingly stringent sanctions adopted by the United States, Canada, Britain and the European Union, including against Putin himself and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Russia said sanctioning the pair was “a demonstration of the complete impotence of the foreign policy” of the West.

“We have reached the line after which the point of no return begins,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The impact of sanctions has been far-reaching.

French naval forces on Saturday said they had intercepted in the Channel a cargo vessel loaded with cars bound for Russia.

The Russian-flagged Baltic Leader ship is suspected of belonging to a sanctioned company.

Zelensky has called on Western allies to expel Moscow from the SWIFT banking transfer system.

But a number of EU countries, including Germany, Hungary and Italy, have been reluctant over fears Russia could cut off gas supplies.

While sanctions have focused on Russia-linked finances, travel and trade, there have also been repercussions in the worlds of culture and sports.

In the latest development, Poland on Saturday said it was refusing to play its 2022 World Cup play-off against Russia on March 24.

Meanwhile Boris Johnson has hailed plans for extra military and humanitarian support to be sent to Ukraine.

Britain is among more than 25 countries to pledge to continue to supply arms, as capital Kyiv remains under attack from Russian forces.

Protests and demonstrations in support of Ukraine are being held across the UK, including in London and Manchester.

And the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have said they “stand” with the people of Ukraine as they “bravely fight”.

In a tweet, the couple said they had met President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife in 2020 and said: “Today we stand with the president and all of Ukraine’s people as they bravely fight for that future.”

Biden Nominates First Black Woman To Serve As Supreme Court Judge

0

President Joe Biden on Friday nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to be the first Black woman in US history to serve on the Supreme Court.

“I’m proud to announce that I am nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court,” Biden said, confirming media reports. “She is one of our nation’s brightest legal minds and will be an exceptional Justice.”

Jackson, 51, was appointed to the federal bench in 2013, and was backed by three Republican senators last year when she was elevated to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, seen as a staging ground for aspiring Supreme Court justices.

With one liberal justice replacing another the announcement, reported by CNN and NBC, will not reshape the ideological make-up of the court — but it is a huge moment for Biden personally and politically.

White House officials hope it will provide a few days of positive news coverage ahead of the president’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.

The pick presents an opportunity for the administration to pivot from a spate of bad news in recent months, with Biden’s domestic agenda stalled amid runaway inflation and plummeting poll numbers.

The announcement is also another chance for Biden to show the Black voters who rescued his floundering 2020 primary campaign that he can deliver for them following the recent defeat of voting rights legislation.

“Ketanji Brown Jackson is an intellectual heavyweight and highly regarded jurist who has dedicated her life and career to the service of others,” said Mondaire Jones, one of the first Black openly gay congressmen.

“I applaud President Biden for making history with this nomination, as well as for making the perfect choice.”

Black Americans are among Biden’s strongest supporters, with two-thirds approving of his job performance, according to a CBS poll released last week.

But his popularity among the key demographic — 85 percent at the start of his term — declined over the months following his inauguration and he has not recovered the lost ground.

After Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement, Biden narrowed his preferred candidates to a handful of top legal figures before settling on Jackson, including J. Michelle Childs, a federal judge in South Carolina, and Leandra Kruger, who sits on the California Supreme Court.

In his first year in office, Biden nominated 62 women to the federal judiciary, including 24 Black women. But there are still only a few dozen active Black female judges on the federal bench out of almost 800 total.

The president had promised during his successful 2020 White House run to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court for the first time in US history.

Jackson will now go through weeks of hearings and meetings with senators before her nomination comes to the floor, likely in early April.

Republicans, who cannot block a Supreme Court nomination as long as all 50 Senate Democrats stick together, have been sounding a discordant note in their public statements.

Senator Roger Wicker described Biden’s vow to only consider Black women for the vacancy “affirmative action” while Senator Susan Collins said making the pledge before the 2020 election was “clumsy” and risked further politicizing perceptions of the court.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham welcomed the push for more diversity, saying “it’s about time” the bench looked more like America.

But the party has shown little appetite in any case for a fight, which they fear could backfire, and are trying to keep the focus on kitchen table issues such as spiraling fuel and food costs.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has argued that one liberal jurist replacing another isn’t a big deal but presidential hopeful Ted Cruz said it was “offensive” for Biden to say he would consider only Black women when they constitute about six percent of the population.

“I want to make sure that the president nominates an exceptional candidate, an exceptional individual, and I would be honored to be able to support an exceptional African American woman,” Alaska Senator Murkowski told CNN earlier this month.

The announcement also represents an interesting milestone that has nothing to do with race or politics.

Biden presided over Breyer’s confirmation to the Supreme Court as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1994, and has now named Breyer’s replacement. This has never happened before in US history.

Trump praises Russia’s Putin, hints at 2024 presidential bid

0

Donald Trump emerged from political exile Saturday to blast President Joe Biden and NATO over the Ukraine crisis and repeated his false claims of a stolen 2020 election in a speech to grassroots Republicans.

Speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida, the former president spent 86 minutes repeating many of his favorite applause lines, faulting the “radical left” and its “witch hunt” against him.

As massive explosions lit up the sky over Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Trump blamed Russia’s invasion of its neighbor on Biden’s “weakness” and lavished praise on President Vladimir Putin’s intellect.

“As everyone understands, this horrific disaster would never have happened if our election was not rigged,” he said, to rapt applause.

NATO, he said, was “looking the opposite of smart” for hitting Russia with sanctions rather than resolving to “blow (Russia) to pieces — at least psychologically.”

“The problem is not that Putin is smart, which of course he’s smart,” he went on. “But the real problem is that our leaders are so dumb.”

After a year largely out of the public eye, Trump’s ecstatic reception left little doubt that the Republican Party remains in thrall to the twice-impeached, single-term president.

There were chants of “four more years” from the sea of supporters in red “Make America Great Again” hats, who clapped on cue as Trump railed against “woke tyranny” and “cancel culture.”

The crowd reserved their largest cheers for the 75-year-old headliner’s dismissal of Democrats’ claims to be the party of democracy as “bullshit” — and for his claim that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg “used to come to the White House and kiss my ass.”

There were nods to a possible 2024 run — “we did it twice and we’ll do it again,” he claimed, falsely recasting his 2020 defeat to Biden as a victory — although he left the crowd guessing about whether he will personally challenge Biden to a rematch.

– ‘Fight like hell’ -CPAC, the country’s largest conservative gathering, usually offers a valuable insight into the direction the Republicans plan to take over the coming months.

Trump had been expected to lay out a forward-looking “vision for America,” according to organizers, as the Republicans look to take back control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

Instead he dwelt at length on his 2020 election loss and his false claims that he was robbed by widespread voter fraud, urging the crowd to “fight like hell” or face their country being destroyed.

It was similar to the rhetoric that inspired a mob of his supporters to storm the US Capitol on January 6 2021, for which he was punished with his second impeachment.

Russia gives Ukraine deadline for decision on talks in Belarus

0

Russia has given Ukrainian officials a deadline of 3 p.m. local time (7 a.m. ET) on Sunday to decide whether to meet for talks in the Belarusian city of Gomel.

Vladimir Medinsky, the head of the Russian delegation and aide to President Vladimir Putin, told state news agency RIA Novosti they would stay until the allocated time and wait for a response.

“As soon as we receive this confirmation, we shall immediately set off to meet our counterparts in the negotiations,” Medinsky said. “We stand for peace.”

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday he would be willing to hold talks with Russia but rejected their proposal for a meeting to be held in Belarus.

Belarus is an ally of Russia and played a key role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russian troops invaded through the Belarus border with support from Belarus’ government, according to Ukrainian officials. The Biden administration subsequently sanctioned nine Belarusian defense firms for their support of the invasion.

Zelensky directly addressed Belarus in an address on Sunday, saying “aggressive actions” from Belarusian territory meant it was not possible to hold talks in the country. Ukraine said it had intercepted a cruise missile launched toward Kyiv from Belarusian territory.

The US State Department on Thursday said Zelensky remained “a prime target for Russian aggression,” while Zelensky himself said, “the enemy marked me as target No. 1.”

“If the talks are rejected, the Ukrainian side shall bear all responsibility for bloodshed,” Medinsky said. “But we remain here until 15:00 waiting for a response from the Ukrainian side.”

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Sunday he was “waiting” for Ukraine to come to the country for negotiations with Russia, to be hosted by Belarus.

“We are waiting. Everyone is in Gomel waiting. If they come then there will be negotiations,” Lukashenko told reporters after voting in the constitutional referendum in Minsk on Sunday, according to Belarusian state news agency Belta.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters a Russian delegation has already arrived in Belarus for notional talks with the Ukrainian representatives, RIA Novosti reported Sunday.- CNN

MPEZENI SHOCKED WITH LUBINDA EJECTION

0

(Smart Eagles)

PARAMOUNT Chief Mpezeni is dissapointed that state house ejected Patriotic Front (PF) acting President Given Lubinda who he invited to attend the Nc’wala ceremony on Saturday February 26,2022.

The traditional leader said he decided to invite all people regardless of their political affiliations to show that his the father of the nation.

Speaking when Mr Lubinda, acting Secretary General Nickson Chilangwa,Central Committee Member Remember Chanda Mutale and various PF Members of Parliament paid a courtesy call on him yesterday, Paramount Mpezeni said it was wrong for state house to behave the way they did.

“As I father am very shocked with what really happened.

This is not the way politics need to be done. We need to unite as a people,” he said.

Meanwhile senior Chief Nzamane said what transpired was wrong and must be condemned at all cost.

The traditional leader said the NC’wala ceremony cannot be used as a political ground to fight others.

He said there is need for change how politicians should practice politics instead of causing confusion in the country.

“When we heard what happened as chiefs we were very hurt because everyone was invited to attend.

That was not State house event but every Zambian was invited to be there.

“This kind of politics must be condemned. We are one people and not enemies,” he said.

And senior Chief Madzimawe called for unite of purpose in the country.

“If you see the theme of NC’wala it was about unite and reconciliation. This is how we should be as Zambians.

Meanwhile Mr Lubinda assurd traditional leaders across the country that the PF will attend all traditional ceremonies.

He said the PF recognises the important role which traditional leaders play in society hence the need to continue working with them.

Mr Lubinda indicated that the PF leadership and membership at large will attend all traditional ceremonies as a way of supporting traditional leaders.

He is hopeful that what happened at NC’wala ceremony will not happen in other traditional ceremonies.

As Usual State House Has Chosen To Lie! Anthony Bwalya Is Doing A Disservice To The Presidency- Antonio Mwanza

AS USUAL STATE HOUSE HAS CHOSEN TO LIE!

ANTHONY BWALYA IS DOING A DISSERVICE TO THE PRESIDENCY

27th February, 2022

We have noted a statement issued by Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, Mr. Anthony Bwalya vainly trying to distance State House and the President from what transpired this afternoon at the ncwala ceremony.
His statement is a disservice to the president, the upnd and the nation at large. We do not expect a presidential aide to resort to lies when the presidency has been put in bad light by its officers.

Anthony Bwalya must know that the job of any Presidential Aide is to tell the President the truth, no matter how bad it is. By definition, aides are there to help the President communicate and do correct things; it is a huge disservice for an aide to try to sugarcoat reality and deliberately mislead or misrepresent the President.

In his usual casual manner Bwalya was quick to issue a statement to defend the President without gathering facts of what exactly transpired at the Ncwala ceremony. What happened today was a disgrace and a stain on the Presidency and instead of trying to cover up the debacle, Bwalya would have done himself and the Presidency alot of good if he took time to verify the facts before issuing his uncoordinated statement. Maybe the Security was abusing the name of the President by pretending to be acting in his name.

In order to help our brother, here is the chronological way of what exactly happened to the PF Acting President, Hon. Given Lubinda at the Ncwala ceremony:

1. Honorable Lubinda arrived at the main arena at exactly 10:00 hours and went to sit at the back row of the VIP section together with party SG Hon Nickson Chilangwa, MCC Hon. Remember Chanda Mutale, MP, Hon Peter Phiri of Mkaika Constituency, Hon Melesiana Phiri of Milanzi Constituency, Hon Maureen Mabonga of Mfuwe Constituency, Hon Yotam Mutayachalo of Chama North Constituency, Hon Masauso Tembo of Sinda Constituency and Hon Philimon Twasa.

2. Upon noticing the PF delegation, N’cwala organizing committee chairperson Noel Nkhoma went to invite Hon Lubinda from the back row and ushered him to sit in the front row on a seat reserved for him among other invited opposition party leaders. A gesture Hon Lubinda accepted.

3. A number of people that included UPND ministers, members of Parliament, other VIP invited guests and the press then took turns to greet the PF acting president.

4. When the presidential chopper landed, Mr Noel Nkhoma approached Hon Lubinda and reported that he had been ordered to ask the PF acting president to leave the arena. In response, Hon Lubinda asked Mr Nkhoma to ask the security officer who gave the order to come and explain why he wanted him out.

5. Assistant Superintendent D Mwanza then came and told Hon Lubinda to leave as he was ordered to ensure that the opposition leader was ejected from the arena. Hon Lubinda then asked Assistant Superintendent D Mwanza to help him carry his belongings and usher him out. The security officer was seen carrying Hon Lubinda’s belongings whilst ushering him out of the arena.

If Anthony has any doubts still lingering in his mind, we will gladly provide witness accounts of the incident including the said superintendent Mwanza and Mr Noel Nkhoma.

My brother, let us help the President and the country by telling the truth. Lies can never build a nation. If the President was misrepresented by the security officer it was better for his superiors to reprimand him instead of Anthony trying to cover up facts with unsubstantiated claims.

BE ALERT…Army Commander, you’re fully aware of issues around our region – HH

BE ALERT

…Army Commander, you’re fully aware

of issues around our region – HH

By Kombe Mataka in Kabwe

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has urged the army to be alert to keep the country in an integral manner that allows democratic freedoms to prevail amongst the people.

Commissioning the Zambia Army Officer Cadets at Kohima Barracks yesterday, President Hichilema also said troops serving in peacekeeping missions must get their full allowances “and not a penny must be deducted from them.”

“Army Commander [Lieutenant General Dennis Alibuzwi], you are fully aware of issues going on around in our region, something that is new in our region. Without being specific, you know, and these men and women need to be alert to keep our soil, our country, our territory in an integral manner but also in a manner that allows democratic freedoms to prevail amongst our people because we are democracy,” he urged.

President Hichilema reminded the cadets that, “you are a Zambian soldier, as you stand on this parade. You serve in the Zambia Army. You shall always be dedicated to duty. You shall always be prepared to undertake assigned missions and tasks anywhere – everywhere. You are a loyal and trusted soldier, with respect for our country. You are protector of Zambia’s hard earned freedom.

You are a buffalo soldier. You have joined a respectable profession in which you should put interests of our great nation before your own.”

He said the country expected them to be entirely dedicated and committed to serving the interests of the people.

“In a democratic state like ours, with strong democratic credentials, you are expected to be loyal soldiers to the government and to the people of Zambia. To begin to bring professionalism in the army which we begun to see getting eroded in the past, this government, this leadership, is dedicated – determined – to support you, to work with you, the Army Commander and other service chiefs, to return our service institutions back to professionalism – back to professional days,” he said.

“You can count on us on that because to some extent that is what will assure some stability in our country. In times of instability, we have articulated what you ought to do and your training outlined that. Army Commander, other service chiefs that are here, this government will want you to also perform duties that are to do with national reconstruction. National reconstruction, rebuilding our country in many facets and you have capabilities – you have units in the army that do those things such as constructing our bridges, putting together infrastructure alongside the private sector. We will be working with yourselves to undertake these additional duties in peace times. Obviously, in times of instability we all know what our priorities as an army and as service chiefs and men and women is all about. No question about it. We do believe that this aspect of your duties will help us keep our country, assure our country of national success, economic and social as well as stability.”

He said defence forces were required to exercise utmost discipline, professionalism, and responsibility in the discharge of duties at all times.

“Zambian people expect you to be diligent in safeguarding, maintaining national sovereignty and protecting its territorial integrity. Army Commander, you are fully aware of issues going on around in our region, something that is new in our region; without being specific, you know, and these men and women need to be alert to keep our soil, our country, our territory in an integral manner but also in a manner that allows democratic freedoms to prevail amongst our people because we are a democracy,” he stressed.

And President Hichilema said the government was very proud of the Zambia Army for many reasons, including carrying out peace-keeping missions professionally.

“As I travel around the country, more importantly in the region, around the world, one thing that has come out consistently as I meet other presidents and indeed the African Union, SADC, and obviously the United Nations colleagues, they always say to me that ‘HH, Mr President, thank you for sending us disciplined and hardworking soldiers and other service colleagues…’ If you have done good things or those before you have done good things don’t be the generation that breaks those good things,” he said.

“We are aware, I’m aware, of the challenges that you are facing. And I was whispering to the Minister of Defence [Ambrose Lufuma] that some of the issues that were raised here are fairly mundane and small issues and we should be able to checklist them and get them done…We want to better your lives, working conditions, including the issue of equipment is extremely important…Army Commander, we made it clear before and we make it clear now that we want our troops, as they return from missions outside this country, to receive their full allowances. I say so knowing that we have a debate in our government but as President, I want to say to you that I made this commitment to the people of Zambia before being elected into office that all our men and women working in peacekeeping missions must be getting full allowances and not a penny must be deducted from them. We are getting close to that intent very soon. We are six months in office, we have been looking at the issue and indeed why that decision was made. It was genuine but we want to find a solution around that decision yet maintain the reason why that decision was made – support those requirements yet leave our men and women with their full allowances because we all know why it should be like that. We want them not to be different with others serving alongside them in these missions. We are clear, we are determined and we shall do that fairly soon.”

He reminded commissioned officers that the basic training they had received was just the beginning of “your training process as a part of your career”.

“We would like to see more secondments of young people beyond our boundaries into other countries, not just for peace-keeping missions or otherwise. But deliberately to second our men and women into ranks elsewhere, cooperating colleagues, partners around the world. And this President will work with you to actualise those programmes and this will give these young people an added flavor of basically how other armies operate, behave and conduct themselves,” President Hichilema said.

He said he concerned about the shortage of manpower in the army resulting from various reasons including natural reasons such as retirement and “indeed loss of life”.
“As we stabilise our economy, and we’re working very hard on that aspect, our government will endeavour to address these challenges, ensuring that confidence in the army and elsewhere begins to move towards the full levels as projected for the reasons that they were initially decided because of the need to cover across the breadth and width of our country,” said President Hichilema. “We are also aware that training is the engine that propels the defence forces, and we shall attach extra attention to training including in-service, extra skills. Let’s talk outside these platforms, close our doors and begin to work around these issues as a team. I’m a team player myself. I was raised around a business community that understands in peace and indeed in working in harmony with one another, recognising that we are skilled differently. Even when you go for the same training, as we’ve seen from the prizes that have been given, human beings are talented slightly differently. And they acquire, from the same training, specific strengths in certain areas. And the importance therefore of working together and being a team can never be underscored even among the command structure of the army. And all our service chiefs, team work is what we want to see going forward.”

Over 300 Law Students Sent On Part-time

0

OVER 300 LAW STUDENTS SENT ON PART-TIME.

STUDENTS at the University of Zambia’s School of Law have complained of foul play by the school’s authorities after over 300 of them were sent on part time.
After seating the 2021 end of year examinations, the results are that 14% of the Second year law students made it to Third Year while about 25% of the Third Year Law students made it to Fourth year.

Failing one course or any number of courses puts a student on part time. This means students put on part time are to pay for each course in which they got a D. Those on student loans lose their loans in that year and are expected to pay the fees irregardless of their vulnerability and yet reactivation of the loan is not guaranteed while those who are on self sponsorship incur extra costs. However, both are delayed by a year in their studies. To the vulnerable this is a sentence out of school.

The students in the school of law appealed for supplementary exams as a second chance, citing the hardships they underwent in the previous academic year as the cause of failure, aome of which include;

  • E learning. It is common knowledge at the University of Zambia that E learning equals No learning. Due to this, students only had two months of interaction with their lecturers.
  • Absentism by lecturers. Even after the whole year was reduced to two months most lecturers did not attend to their students for physical classes . Further, the school did not provide tutorial sessions which are an Avenue for clarity for the students. Additionally, some lecturers were absent both physically and online. Notably one some students in an interview with UNZA Leaks said a certain acting high ranking lecturer only taught less than 10 times in total for both the Second Year and Third year class the entire academic year online and physically.
  • Sadism, some lecturers vowed and promised to fail the students at the beginning of the academic year and they proceeded as such.

This raises a lot of concerns about what the motive is behind failing these numbers of students.

Others have observed that The school of law released their results weeks later after other schools as a protest to management’s over-enrollment of students.

“Could this failing of students be a form of protest?” an affected student asked.

Others think this may be one way the school wants to raise more money from school fees for part timers as they are required to pay around K6000 for one course.

“Was it a hit job on innocent students in order for the school to earn extra Cash? Or maybe it was just pure sadism and contempt against the students. We sympathise and stand with the students in the school of law. We hope that the School Management will come in and allow those that appealed for supplementary exams to sit for the exams,” a student said.

Pregnant housewife stages own kidnap, collects ramson from lover

0

A 25 years old pregnant housewife, Jamila Ardo is currently at the Yola Correctional Centre for allegedly staging her own kidnap and collecting N2.076 million as ransom from her Facebook lover.

The suspect was arraigned before chief magistrate court I in Yola on Thursday, February 24, for the offence of criminal conspiracy and kidnapping contrary to sections 60 and 248 of penal code law, Jamila however, pleaded not guilty.

The suspect who lives in Wauru Jabbe area in the state capital was said to have connived with one Abdulaziz and stage-managed her kidnapping in order to collect the sum of N2.076 million as ransom from her lover, Adamu Ahmed, who is based in Abuja.

According to the police, the accused and Mallam Adamu were said to have started their amorous relationship via social media (Facebook) and were planning on how to get married unknown to Adamu that Jamila is a married woman. It was learnt that the online lovers were yet to meet physically but the relationship waxed stronger until the bubble finally burst.

She was said to have connived with Abdulaziz and put a call to Mallam Adamu where they informed him that she has been kidnapped. During negotiation, Adamu, was said to have heard Jamila crying and pleading with him on phone to pay the ransom so that she will regain her freedom.

Being a man who is deeply inlove with Jamila, Adamu immediately deposited into a bank account number bearing Amina Mohammed.

After sending the money, Adamu was informed by his lover that the kidnappers had released her. He became suspicious and then he filed a complaint through a letter to the SIB dated November 16 2021.

The letter was filed through his counsel and subsequently endorsed by Adamawa State Commissioner of Police. In his letter, Adamu narrated how Jamila conspired with Abdulaziz, kidnapped herself and collected the money from him as ransom.

Police investigation led to the arrest of Amina Mohammed who confessed that it was her friend known as Jamila who requested her account number so that somebody will send in money for her.

After her plea, the prosecutor, Inspector Abubakar Nurudeen, prayed magistrate Abdullahi Mohammed Digil, adjourn the matter to enable the prosecution to forward the case file to DPP for legal advice.

Counsel to the defendant, C Crowealth pleaded with the court to allow his client to have access to a medical facility considering her condition and also asked the court to order the prosecution to avail them with all necessary documents to enable them to prepare for their defence.

The case was adjourned to March 10 2022, while the suspect was ordered to be remand in the Correctional Centre in Yola.

Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland and Portugal to send military reinforcements to assist Ukraine

0

Four NATO members, Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland and the Netherlands have announced they would send reinforcements to assist Ukraine in its battle against Russia.

The Czech Republic committed on Saturday, February 26, to send a “shipment of weapons to Ukraine” worth over $8.5 million to a “place of Ukrainians choice.”

“The government has approved a shipment of weapons to Ukraine. We are sending machine guns, submachine guns, sniper rifles and pistols and their corresponding ammunition valued at CZK 188 million,” Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala tweeted.

“We are doing everything we can to help Ukraine,” Fiala added.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said Friday that the country would be sending reinforcements to join Ukrainian soldiers on the ground to help secure their borders as this “is a war against the freedom of self-determination of a democratic country and therefore it is also a war against the freedom of self-determination and against democracy.”

Speaking at a televised news conference, the Portuguese prime minister, flanked by Defense Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho, left, and the Chief of Armed Forces General Staff Admiral António da Silva Ribeiro said;

“There was an unanimity of all states, in view of the need to strengthen the NATO presence on the borders of Ukraine and in all the alliance countries that are close to the Ukraine region.”

“Portugal, in this sense, in addition to the forces that this year has assigned to the European command of NATO, decided to anticipate, from the second half to the first half, the mobilization and commitment of an infantry company that will act in Romania and that will be projected in the coming weeks,” Costa said.

“Several other countries at the moment are either anticipating or reinforcing or deciding to reinforce their participation with these countries [bordering Ukraine] in order to have a clear manifestation of unity and deterrence regarding Russia’s actions,” Costa added.

When asked for a specific number of soldiers that would be sent to support Ukraine, Costa said the infantry company would include 175 troopers.

The Netherlands also on Saturday said it would be providing Ukraine with more weapons.

“The Netherlands will supply Ukraine 200 anti-aircraft Stinger missiles. Other defence material already on its way,” the prime minister’s foreign affairs and defense adviser, Geoffrey van Leeuwen, tweeted.

Germany, who is very dependent on Russia for its energy and gas, also announced it will deliver anti-tank weapons and missiles to Ukraine, a major policy shift after resisting Kyiv’s previous calls for defensive weaponry.

“The Russian attack marks a change in times. It is our duty to support Ukraine as much as we can defending themselves against Putin’s invasion army. Therefore we will deliver 1,000 antitank weapons and 500 stinger missiles to our friends in Ukraine,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz tweeted Saturday after a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda.

Kanye West takes Chaney Jones, a Kim Kardashian impersonator, shopping

0

On Thursday, Kanye West was spotted shopping in Miami with Kim Kardashian impersonator Chaney Jones.

The “Donda” artist and Jones, who looks eerily like West’s separated wife, were photographed stopping in a Balenciaga store before grabbing sushi for lunch.

“They walked around Bal Harbour Shops and stopped at Balenciaga before taking the elevator to Makoto on the second floor, where they dined on spicy tuna crispy rice and a couple cocktails,” a source tells Page Six.

“There was no PDA, and they were incredibly low-key,” the source says.

“Kanye was surrounded by fangirls who wanted selfies at Bal Harbour Shops, and he took a few but seemed uninterested,” the insider said.

In a blue Boston Fire Department hooded sweatshirt with stains on the front pocket, West, 44, looks sloppy. Dark pants and black rubber Yeezy boots completed his ensemble.

Jones, meanwhile, followed Kardashian’s lead and flaunted her curves in a tight tank top and leggings, black sneakers, and giant mirrored sunglasses. She carried a black Hermes Birkin bag with crocodile leather – possibly a present from Ye?

During their retail therapy appointment, West appeared to be preoccupied when he accepted a phone call. Jones, on the other hand, appeared unconcerned and was seen holding her own iPhone.

Jones and West have been hanging out a lot lately, most recently at Nobu Malibu. According to TMZ, she also attended his live “Donda 2” event in Miami earlier this week.

Nonetheless, the rapper has continued to pursue Kardashian throughout their relationship, even sending her a truckload of roses on Valentine’s Day. He was also in an open relationship for a few months with Julia Fox before they split up earlier this month.

Kardashian begged with the judge to check off on her divorce from the “Jeen-yuhs” singer after he objected to her requests. West’s outing with Jones comes after Kardashian asked with the judge to sign off on her divorce from the “Jeen-yuhs” star.

In court documents acquired by Page Six on Thursday, the Skims creator stated, “I very much desire to get divorced,” adding, “Kanye has been publishing a lot of disinformation regarding our private concerns and co-parenting on social media, which has caused mental pain.”

West objected to Kardashian’s plea to be declared legally unmarried last week. The rapper ripped at the mother of their four children, North, 8, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 2, in a series of Instagram posts. He accused her of hiding his children from him and said that she was forcing North to use TikTok against his choice.

He’s also been dragging Kardashian’s new boyfriend, Pete Davidson, constantly, calling him a “d–khead” and threatening to “beat” his “ass.”

FORTUNATELY, THE MAJORITY OF OUR NATIONALS HAVE BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR, AND THE BREAK-DOWN IS AS FOLLOWS;
• 1 AT POLISH BORDER
• 29 AT THE UKRAINE BORDER CHECK POINTS NEAR HREBENNE
• 14 IN SUMY
• 14 IN POLTARVA
• 16 IN KHARKOV
• 7 IN IVANO
• 15 IN LVIV, AT THE TRAIN STATION, AND FINALLY
• 45 ARE IN TRANSIT TOWARDS LVIV
WE ARE ENGAGING VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS IN UKRAINE, POLAND AND RUSSIA TO FACILITATE THE MOVEMENT OF OUR NATIONALS OUT OF THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF UKRAINE.

THE GOVERNMENT IS AWARE OF THE ANXIETIES, CONCERNS, AND INDEED FRUSTRATIONS BEING FACED BY PARENTS AND GUARDIANS OF OUR CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAD ALREADY MADE THEIR WAY TO THE POLISH BORDER AND SADLY HAD TO SPEND THE NIGHT ALONG THE WAY.
FELLOW CITIZENS, THE WEATHER CONDITIONS IN THAT PART OF THE WORLD ARE HARSH. OUR CHILDREN ARE SCARED. OUR CHILDREN ARE ANXIOUS. OUR CHILDREN ARE FACING CHALLENGES.
WE WOULD LIKE, THEREFORE, TO ENCOURAGE PARENTS AND GUARDIANS AND THE NATION AT LARGE TO WORK WITH GOVERNMENT AS WE COORDINATE THE EVACUATION OF OUR NATIONALS BACK TO ZAMBIA.

ANY ENQUIRIES THAT THE PARENTS AND GUARDIANS MAY HAVE, SHOULD BE COMMUNICATED THROUGH THE PERMANENT SECRETARY (IR&C) MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION.
I WISH TO REITERATE THAT, AT THIS MOMENT, IT IS THE TOP PRIORITY OF THE GOVERNMENT TO ENSURE THE SAFE EVACUATION OF ALL OUR ZAMBIAN NATIONALS OUT OF UKRAINE, BACK TO ZAMBIA IN LINE WITH THE DIRECTIVES FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA.

YOUR GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO EXPLORE, EVEN UNDER DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES, ALL MEANS POSSIBLE, TO GET OUR CHILDREN ACROSS THE BORDER INTO POLAND.

THE MINISTRY, THEREFORE, WOULD LIKE TO HUMBLY REQUEST MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC, PARTICULARLY PARENTS AND GUARDIANS OF THE STUDENTS, TO REMAIN CALM AND PATIENT AS THE GOVERNMENT EXECUTES THIS VERY CHALLENGING AND COMPLICATED EXERCISE.
LET US ALL REMAIN PRAYERFUL. WE SHALL OVERCOME THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION.

HH Orders The Eviction Of Hon. Given Lubinda From Ncwala- PF SG Nickson Chilangwa

0

STATEMENT: HH ORDERS THE EVICTION OF HON. GIVEN LUBINDA FROM NCWALA

26th February, 2022.

We wish to inform our members and the general public that our Party Acting President, Hon. Given Lubinda has unceremoniously been evicted from the Ncwala Ceremony on the instruction of President Hakainde Hichilema.

In recognition of the importance we attach to traditional ceremonies and from the stand point of the cordial and mutually respectful relationship that has existed between His Royal Highness, Nkosi ya Mankosi, Paramount Chief Mpenzeni and the PF, our party put together a high powered delegation led by our Acting President to attend the ceremony.

When we arrived at Mtenguleni venue, our Acting President was ushered to his seat by Mr Noel Nkoma (patron of the organising committee) upon which the arrival of our Acting President was recognized and announced by the Director of ceremonies.

Our Acting President was placed at the very end of the front row in the VVIP dignatories’ pavilion.

Odd enough and much to our chagrin, after an hour and just when the arrival of the Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema was announced, Mr Noel Nkoma approached our Acting President telling him that he had been instructed by a senior security officer of the Republican President that our Acting President was being asked to leave!

Our Acting President requested to speak to the concerned officer who had issued the instructions for Hon Lubinda to leave! Upon which Assistant Superintendent D Mwanza came along and informed our Acting President that he was commanded to ensure that our Acting President was made to leave saying that they did not want any confusion to take place where the Republican President would be. Asked by our Acting President as to who was making such commands and what confusion was being anticipated, Mr Mwanza angrily retorted that he was not to be asked any questions and threatened our Acting President that he was going to moved forcibly if he did not oblige. After a back and forth argument, our Acting President decided against a protracted altercation and proceeded to leave the arena. This prompted all members of the PF delegation who included myself to follow suit. Much as we had the capacity to resist the ejection, we elected to be civil about it for the sake of harmony and for observing the decorum deserved by Your Royal Higness and the ceremony.

His Royal Highness Chief Maguya was alerted of the development and he tried to intervene to no avail.

Out of respect for the Paramount Chief Mpezeni we had no choice but to leave.

It is very unfortunate that President Hichilema and the UPND have disregarded the very timely theme of the Ncwala ceremony namely ‘Promoting Healing, Unity and Reconciliation’.

We want to register our gratitude towards the people at the ceremony for the overwhelming welcome they accorded our delegation. On the streets of Chipata and outside the arena, Our delegation was overwhelmed with the attention, greetings, words of solidarity and encouragement. And during the hour that our Acting President was on his seat, he was besieged by numerous people who were paying tributes to him and taking selfies with him. We are proud of this show of solidarity to our leader.

We sincerely thank His Royal Highness Paramount Chief Mpenzeni and the Organising Committee for the invitation and we stand ready to attend future events believing that such an occurrence shall not recur.

We wish to advise President Hichilema to realise that the time for politics of vengeance and hatred is long gone. He must realise that he is now President of the Republic of Zambia and he has a solemn duty to preach and practice politics of love, unity and togetherness.

PF ENTOURAGE UNCEREMONIOUSLY EJECTED FROM NCWALA CEREMONY

… upon instruction from State House security.

Chipata … Saturday, February, 26, 2022 [Smart Eagles]

PF acting president Hon. Given Lubinda and entourage which included Secretary General Hon. Nickson Chilangwa were today unceremoniously ejected from the Ncwala ceremony upon instruction from State House security.

The PF entourage were earlier accorded a thunderous welcome in the city of Chipata compared to Republican President Hakainde Hichilema.

And the PF acting Secretary General Hon Nickson Chilangwa said the warm welcome the PF received in Chipata seemed to have agitated the Head of State and his delegation.

He said an hour after the announcement of President Hichilema’s arrival the PF acting President Hon. Lubinda and entourage were asked to leave the venue.

He said efforts to find out where the instruction to have him out of the venue came from, a senior State House security official threatened to have Hon. Lubinda and entourage ejected by force if he refused to comply.

Hon. Chilangwa the Kawambwa Central lawmaker said attempts by traditional leaders to have the PF entourage remain at the venue were equally met with hostility.

” Our presence at Ncwala ceremony did not settle well with the delegation, and the handlers, of President Hichilema. We had no choice but to leave. It is very saddening that that the handlers of President Hichilema disregarded the theme of the ceremony namely ‘Promoting Healing, Unity and Reconciliation,” Hon. Chilangwa said.

” In the streets of Chipata and outside the arena, our delegation was overwhelmed with the attention, greetings, words of solidarity and encouragement. And our Acting President was besieged by numerous people who were paying tributes to him and taking selfies with him and we are proud of this show of solidarity to our leader,” he adds.

And Hon. Chilangwa said the PF will not accept the public humiliation of PF senior members.

Public order Act will be reviewed to ensure power is given to citizens – Haimbe

0

By Masuzyo Chakwe

GEARS Initiative Zambia says it is time for the new dawn government to walk the campaign talk of repealing the public order Act and honouring those who suffered harassment, injuries and death because of poor enforcement of the law.

And justice minister Mulambo Haimbe has assured that the Act will be reviewed so as to ensure power is given to citizens to exercise their rights as enshrined in the Constitution.
During a stakeholders’ engagement on public order management and legal framework agenda at Sandy’s Creation on Thursday, GEARS Initiative executive director MacDonald Chipenzi said the organisation attached great importance to legal reforms.

“In a democratic society like ours, it is extremely important to have laws that guarantee democratic, political and civil rights for the effective participation and involvement of the citizens,” he said.

“Democratic participation and involvement of the citizens in the governance of the country is key to achieve sustainable development and assured civic responsibility towards nation assets.”

He said it was GEARS’ belief that the public order Act in its current form had been one of the thorny pieces of legislation inimical to the realisation of democratic governance in Zambia.

Chipenzi said this was so because the Act, apart from being selective and colonial oriented in its provisions, was a deterrent to effective citizens’ participation and involvement in public affairs.

“For decades now, the call for the repeal and replacement of such laws has been constantly echoing on successive governments including the new dawn government. Previous regimes tried to repeal the Act but decided to withdraw its political will and stopped at tabling the proposed draft public order bill before the National Assembly and later withdrew it. Therefore, the repeal of the public order Act is long overdue,” Chipenzi said.

“GEARS Initiative is hopeful that the new dawn government will not fall to the narrative that the Act is good and avoid its repeal, as that will be political suicide because those who refused to do it in the past and now in opposition are feeling the negative effect of this law on their political activities and are crying foul.”

He said Zambia needed a law on public order management that was cognizant of the democratic nature of societies and the multiparty nature of “our politics”.

Chipenzi said disappointingly, some political parties, namely UNIP, MMD, PF and now UPND, when in opposition condemned the law and its provisions but entertained and praised it when ushered into government.

He said it was GEARS’ prayer that the UPND government would not be like other governments before it but would support the quickest efforts to repeal the law.
“This is so because political power is vanity. It is like chasing after the wind. It sometimes comes very late but definitely leaves quickly. So far, the new dawn government has shown discretion in the enforcement of this law as citizens can now demonstrate without police permits/notifications and when they do so, they are never tear-gassed or dispersed violently by the police,” noted Chipenzi.

“However, we cannot continue to depend on discretionary power and benevolence of the powers in the office at that time in the enforcement of this Act, as this has been found to be abandoned and abused when a brutal regime is ushered into office. It is time for the new dawn government to walk the campaign talk of repealing the Act and for honouring those who suffered harassment, injuries including death because of the enforcement of the Act. It is for this government to listen to the voice of the civil society organisations, the NGOs, media, FBOs, human rights defenders and individual activists who have been consistent in calling for repeal and replacement of this Act.”

And Haimbe, in a speech read for him by Ministry of Justice permanent secretary in charge of legal affairs Mwenya Bwalya said freedoms of speech and assembly were key in a democratic society.

He said democracy could neither work nor prosper if people did not go out to share their views.

“However, the public order Act, in its current form is inadequate and requires to be amended. As enunciated in the case of Law Association of Zambia v. the Attorney General (Appeal no. 8/2014) [2016] ZMSC 243 section 5 of the public prder Act gives the police absolute power to determine whether or not an assembly, meeting or procession should take place,” he said.

“According to the court, the language in section 5 of the public order Act expands the reasons for cancelling an assembly beyond those given in the Constitution namely, maintaining public peace and protecting the rights and properties of other people. In fact, the language of the Act does not limit the reasons as to why the police may cancel a planned assembly, but rather states that the police can cancel an assembly or procession out of an inability to police it.”

Haimbe said realising the shortcomings identified by the courts of law, it was imperative to reform the Act and prevent its abuse.

He noted that the UPND government committed to giving autonomy to the police in the enforcement of the Act and to put in place mechanisms that allowed for the reform in the manner in which regulation of public assemblies and processions were managed.

“May I reiterate that in an effort to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights and to ensure public order is managed, the public order Act will be reviewed so as to ensure that power is given to the citizens of Zambia to exercise their rights as enshrined in the Constitution,” said Haimbe.

Why is Russia invading Ukraine?

0

By Richard Odious

Why is Russia Invading Ukraine?
It all started 73 years ago in 1949, after World War ll. Europe was tired from the war, broke & in shambles.
They needed money to rebuild their Industry & buy food.

So they went to the US for help.
The US offered to help, and in return – Europe & the US had to Cooperate in certain areas.
The Russians rejected that help & the US didn’t like it. This is one of the origins of their quarrels and enmity.

…by now, the US had seen how a war in Europe could affect them in their own country (I mean, they had just finished the second world war)..
…and the USSR was getting stronger with the vibes of a rogue nation…America was worried…Western Europe was worried.
Nobody wanted another Germany.
…America knew that to protect themselves from getting bullied by the USSR, Western Europe (Russia’s neighbors) would get into an agreement with Russia.

So they went to Europe, and offered more help – in return they had to sign a treaty. We help protect you against the USSR, and if any of us gets attacked – EVERYONE comes together to fight.

This was how NATO was formed.

Which means, NATO was originally formed as a gang up against RUSSIA
More countries were pulled into NATO.
They became larger. The power of the USSR was diluted.

Now… this is background.

Enter the Russia & Ukraine crisis.
They both share a border to the East, like Ghana and Nigeria. Close neighbors (since Ukraine broke out from USSR)

Now, here is the issue:

If Ukraine joins NATO, Russia will become even more weakened…because if Ukraine is part of NATO…usually, NATO sets up Military bases in their member country for military drills.
The issue is – if this NATO base is near Russia, it is too close. This drill places is just a cover up for what it actually is – a place from where an attack can be launched in case of a war with Russia.

Which means in a case of an invasion, NATO will just stroll into Russia from Ukraine. Easy peasy.
Not just this, they can fire missiles easily from these bases as easy as using a catapult to fire stones into the house of your next door neighbors’ house.

To Russia, Ukraine is a loophole…and it’d be a gang up if they join NATO, because now can do anyhow & if you fight one NATO state, they will all come for you.

Russia does not like that NATO is coming too close to their borders & has asked NATO to stop coming EASTward.

….but you may ask…Ukraine is a sovereign country, why can’t they do what they want? one – there was an agreement, before USSR disbanded; that Ukraine will NEVER join NATO.
Two, think of it this way:
Imagine that you live in a calm neighborhood.
One day some rough looking men move into the next apartment.

They have eyes on your daughters.
They look like one day they will make passes on your daughter.
And not just this, they have CRAZY parties with other rough looking people.
You feel threatened.
It is their Flat, but you won’t want them there.
…and if you have the means, you will chase them out and take over the flat.

The rough guys are NATO, the flat is Ukraine & Russia is determined to move in FIRST.
Because if the rough guys (NATO) brings Ukraine into their gang – now Russia can do NOTHING because Article 5. If one is attacked, all must come to their aid. So make a BIG MOVE so Ukraine does not join NATO.

So why does Ukraine want to join NATO – one is America’s influence (na them dey push them because it benefits them), two is – Russia took a portion of Ukraine’s territory; it makes sense that naturally they’d want to gang up.

My guess is that Putin wants to do one of two things:

  1. Either take over the ENTIRE Ukraine.
  2. Or support the rebels & break Ukraine up (By the way – if a nation has territorial dispute they cannot be allowed into NATO – supporting the Rebels means Ukraine has Territorial dispute)
Based on this, what do you think is the solution for this Crisis. I think it is Obvious

FATE OF FOREST 27 IN HH’s HANDS – HARRINGTON

0

By Oliver Chisenga

WILLIAM Harrington says the fate of the forest reserve number 27 and the thousands of people who depend on it for livelihood now lies squarely in the hands of President Hakainde Hichilema.

He says President Hichilema is the only one with constitutional and executive powers to regazette the forest in the public and national interest.

In a statement to The Mast, Harrington said he believes President Hichilema should find no difficulty in honoring the UPND 2021
election campaign promise and act affirmatively to regazette FR 27 in public interest.

“The ball is entirely in President Hichilema’s court. A wrong impression has somewhat been created in certain media that lands and natural resources minister Elijah Muchima has powers to regazette FR27 when in fact he does not have such powers,” Harrington, a former environment minister, said.

“Regazettion or degazettion of any forest is above the mandate of a minister and the only role he or she can play is in an advisory capacity.”

He recalled that President Hichilema has been petitioned by the Chalimbana River Headwaters Conservation Trust on behalf of the affected community to regazette Forest Reserve 27 so that the area retains its status as a protected forest and water source.

“President Hichilema is yet to act on the petition. A landmark precedent happened when 2nd Republican president Dr Frederick Chiluba ordered the Attorney General to prepare Statutory Instrument No.161 of 1994 which he gladly signed to regazette FR27 following a petition from about three thousand local community members.

President Hakainde Hichilema may wish to emulate the precedent set by Dr Chiluba who was very passionate about environmental protection,” Harrington said.

“It is noted with great concern that lands and natural resources minister Elijah Muchima continues to procrastinate by deciding to appoint a costly so-called ‘technical committee’ to investigate and advise him on the matter of FR27 and yet on the other hand admitting that his ministry is unable to meet the cost involved due to lack of funds. He further states that the work of the committee is dependent on financial support from some named organisations and that therefore, the exercise may take about six months to commence.”

He said Muchima does not state the terms of reference for his proposed technical committee but insisted that the exercise was purely an internal matter for his ministry.

“It only has value insofar as it may investigate if there was any procedural impropriety and corruption in the allocation of plots. It has nothing to do with the immoral and unconstitutional degazettion of FR27 by former Republican president Edgar Chagwa Lungu prior to the August 12, 2021 elections, an action which now threatens the health, wellbeing and lives of thousands of Lusaka, Chongwe and Chalimbana
residents,” Harrington said.

He noted that in the meantime, Muchima has chosen to turn a blind eye to the ongoing construction works in total disregard of the “order” he made soon after the August 12 elections that all construction be halted.
Harrington said considering the state of affairs, he challenged Muchima to tell the nation whether or not the order has since been lifted.

Comedians Keep To Your Lane

0

BY COLLINS ZULU

We have a lot of comedians who are incredibly super talented, unfortunately most of them are misplaced. I’ll soon explain what I mean by misplaced in a short while.

Not so long ago, there was some kind of stand off between fans and comedians. To be honest, I had no idea what sparked the backlash.

Two weeks ago I was privileged to attend a sold out comedy show that was hosted by Cosmas Ng’andwe aka Logic Benson in Mpali.

The Valentine’s Comedy Show helped put things into perspective for me. Those of you who follow my posts, you’ll recall a few weeks ago I spoke about the different types (genres) of comedies and the follow up post highlighted the difference between performing for the stage and performing for the screen.

As evidenced by what transpired at the comedy show, clearly most of our comedians don’t really understand the difference between the material meant for stage and that of the screen.

At every event, the best is reserved for last as was the case at the Valentine’s Comedy Show. Almost everyone including myself was anxiously waiting for Maza’s performance that was set to be the main act of the night. Lo and behold, unfortunately Maza’s performance that night was shambolic. He incredibly disappointed the audience, it was like one was watching a behind the scenes of a horror movie.

Maza as much as I am your big fan, stage yena te elya yobe blo. You’re a screen performer and you’re good at that no doubt.

Our comedians need to understand that it’s not every joke will work on the stage.

However, we have a few comedians who successfully navigate through both on screen as well as on the stage. The likes of Aubrey Luo aka Shi Mumbi, even though his strength is on the screen as oppose to stage. But he somehow knows how to connect with the live audience on stage. Just like my big brother ba Bob Nkosha undoubtedly the king of comedy, but kingdom his on the stage, screen not so much.

My point is, our comedians need to know their area of strength. When you perform on a wrong platform your jokes will come out dry, hence the recent noise about the dry comedians. Just like the film director is different from a stage/theatre director and yet we they both deal with actors.

During the preparation of the artistic send off for Alister Sibbuku who was one of the directors of Mpali, I had to excuse myself from directing a sketch that was to be performed on stage. I had to request for assistance from a theatre director, because I wanted it to be perfect. In that instance I acknowledged that stage directing was not my area of strength, I’m a screen director.

You won’t struggle if you keep to your lane. There’s enough grace for you if you stick to your lane. Kalebalika 🚶

SDA Evangelist Who Condemned President Hichilema’s Papal Visit No Longer A Member

SDA EVANGELIST WHO CONDEMNED PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S PAPAL VISIT NO LONGER A MEMBER

The SDA Church in Zambia defends President Hakainde Hichilema for meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican last week

The Church also clarifies that the purpoted SDA Pastor who went viral on social media, condemning the visit, is no longer a member of the church.

The joint statement by the two Presidents of the governing bodies of the SDA Church in Zambia says the man ceased to be a member of the church due to his extremist views and criticism of the church.

Dear Editor,

Let us be clear this. The President is a Head of State for all, all Zambians whatever their tribe, race, sex, colour, or creed (beliefs).

We don’t need to question why the President visited another Head of State. It’s part of his official duties.

However, I wish to discuss the action by the SDA Church on this matter.

In its end-time messages, the Seventh-day Adventists teaches about the impending global crisis around the Sabath, the second coming of Christ and that the office of the papacy is the Anti-christ in all this….

It is in this light that their own Pastor, preaching about end-time messages, questioned the visit of an Adventist, albeit, a President, to the Pope.

The Church has disowned the Pastor.

The Church says:

“We would also like to address the viral video purported to have been made by a Pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Our position is that the Pastor in that video is NOT a bona-fide Minister of the Gospel in our Church and does in any way represent or speak on behalf of the Church due to his extreme positions on biblical and Theological beliefs.”

So has the Church’s view changed about the Catholic Church and the Pope in the manner they teach using the books of Daniel, Mathews, Revelation and the writings of Ellen G. White.

Michael Chilufya Sata: The Untold Stories Of King Cobra- George Chella

0

MICHAEL CHILUFYA SATA: THE UNTOLD STORIES OF KING COBRA

Here are some of the seemingly small things about President Michael Chilufya Sata that gave away the man’s greatness as a leader, and had a great impact on me personally:

1. During political mobilization and campaigns both in opposition and ruling party days, President Sata never used to drink mineral water arguing that “…Ba George, teti tulenwa mineral water elyo abena Zambia balenwa ifiko (We can’t be drinking mineral water when many Zambians have no access to clean water)”.

2. For a long time, President Sata wore a torn pair of shoes and continued wearing it and traveling the world in it, meeting global leaders in his capacity as Head of State, without any qualms about. It was a long drawn battle for his family and myself as an aide, to convince him to accept a second pair. I remember he would always argue that “…Ba George, why do I need many pairs of shoes when I only have two feet.”

3. Throughout his presidency, President Sata’s laundry for his suits was paid from his pocket, insisting that “… Ba George, I have always paid for my laundry right from the first day I wore a suit. So why must the Zambian taxpayer incur more costs, as if feeding and sustaining me by virtue of the office I hold is not enough?”

4. President Sata allowed common men and women (beggars, villagers, vendors, the aged, the sick and people afflicted with all sorts of problems and situations) to have audience with him right inside the presidential office. There was such a group of 50 – 60 people every week, and he would justify this act as follows: “Ba George, bantu abapina ngaba abalenga ati imwe naine tubepanotuli nokumoneka abachindama nga fino. Tatufwile kubalaba iyo (Its people such as these who favoured us with the privilege of being where we are today by voting for us, so we have an obligation to listen to each and everyone of them… we must listen and attend to their cries.”

I never doubted one single moment that President Sata was indeed, a man of the people. He taught me genuine love in practical terms through his actions. It is only after he is gone that many have come to realize that a saint lived among us. For those that may want to know, the best definition of a saint in my opinion is one by Nelson Mandela who said, “…a saint is a sinner who keeps on trying”.

Witchdoctor jailed for defrauding woman of K13. 8 million after promising to resurrect her dead husband

0

The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a witchdoctor to five years in prison for defrauding a woman of K13. 8 million after promising to resurrect her dead husband.

The convict, Winstone Mvula, 60, has been sentenced today on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences.

The court heard through State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Vincent Ntalawe that Mvula, on October 21 last year, approached a business lady at her shop in Zamkutu along the Bypass road.

He claimed he would bring to life her husband who died in July last year after a short illness.

Mvula demanded money in millions to be paid through Airtel money and some of the money to be paid in cash at a graveyard.

The latter transaction took place at Mbwindi-Mchesi graveyard on the night of 23 November 2021.

At the graveyard, as per instructed, the unsuspecting victim handed Mvula K7 million cash and her late husband’s clothes.

The witchdoctor claimed the husband would wear the clothes soon after his rising from the dead.

The husband, however, didn’t resurrect.

Mvula went on telling the woman to return home to await her husband’s ‘homecoming’ in the following morning.

He further advised her to prepare him [the husband] an early morning feast to celebrate his ‘return.’

The husband, once again, didn’t arrive home and this prompted the woman to report to Lilongwe Police Station.

A manhunt led to Mvula’s arrest on obtaining money by false pretences charge, which he denied in court.

The State, through Sub Inspector Ntalawe, paraded four witnesses to prove its case beyond any doubt.

Ntalawe asked the court to punish the accused hard, saying the victim had suffered a great loss since the money wasn’t recovered.

But Mvula pleaded for leniency, claiming he was too old to face a long life in prison.

In his determination, First Grade Magistrate Robert Botha struck off the mitigation, saying, as an elderly man, Mvula was supposed to be responsible and doing his business well.

Botha went ahead convicting and sentencing him to five years imprisonment with hard labour to deter other quack witchdoctors.

Mvula comes from Chiwato Village Traditional Authority Kaluluma in Kasungu District.

Govt has reduced teaching practice licence fees by 15%

0

Government has with immediate effect reduced all practicing teaching certificate fees by 15%.

Minister of Education Douglas Siakalima says the development follows numerous submissions from teachers requesting that the prescribed fees for the issuance practicing be reviewed downwards.

Mr. Siakalima made this announcement in Lusaka this afternoon during a press briefing.

“Government through my office received a recommendation from the teaching council of zambia (TCZ) council board on the need to review the teacher practicing certificate (license) fees for all categories of teachers in zambia, pursuant to section 18 (a) of the teaching profession act no. 5 of 2013,” he said.

The minister urged that the reduction should now facilitate easy renewal of teacher practicing certificates or licenses for the next cycle from 2022 to 2024.

He further stated that the teaching council of Zambia will work out modalities for implementing the reduced fees.

Mr. Siakalima also indicated that he is reliably informed that the last cycle for practicing certificate (license) renewal expired on 31st December, 2021.

“With this reduction, I expect all teachers now to renew their licenses without delay. School administrators need to collaborate and corporate with the TCZ by ensuring that all teachers are both registered and licensed,” he emphasised.

The Minister however stated that the reduction of fees is only for practicing licenses while registration fees remain unchanged for all categories of teachers.

“It is my ministry’s trust that TCZ will rise to the occasion to add value to the delivery of quality teaching and learning as it ensures that teachers are professional, competent and well behaved,” he said.

Mr. Siakalima observed that it is also the ministry’s expectation that teachers shall participate in continuing professional development (CPD) programs seriously as it is a prerequisite for practicing license renewal.

“In fact, through CPD, teachers will keep up-skilling themselves in a less costly manner,” he noted.

And the minister commended TCZ for developing the electronic certificates known as e-certificates for registration and licensing noting that the move is the fastest, safest and most efficient way of running business this time around.

FULL SPEECH: Russian President Putin explains Ukraine invasion

0

INVASION

AFP is publishing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech announcing Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine. The speech has not been edited and appears verbatim as released in English by the Kremlin.

Here it is in full 👇🏽

Citizens of Russia, friends,

I consider it necessary today to speak again about the tragic events in Donbas and the key aspects of ensuring the security of Russia.

I will begin with what I said in my address on February 21, 2022. I spoke about our biggest concerns and worries, and about the fundamental threats which irresponsible Western politicians created for Russia consistently, rudely and unceremoniously from year to year. I am referring to the eastward expansion of NATO, which is moving its military infrastructure ever closer to the Russian border.

It is a fact that over the past 30 years we have been patiently trying to come to an agreement with the leading NATO countries regarding the principles of equal and indivisible security in Europe. In response to our proposals, we invariably faced either cynical deception and lies or attempts at pressure and blackmail, while the North Atlantic alliance continued to expand despite our protests and concerns. Its military machine is moving and, as I said, is approaching our very border.

Why is this happening? Where did this insolent manner of talking down from the height of their exceptionalism, infallibility and all-permissiveness come from? What is the explanation for this contemptuous and disdainful attitude to our interests and absolutely legitimate demands?

The answer is simple. Everything is clear and obvious. In the late 1980s, the Soviet Union grew weaker and subsequently broke apart. That experience should serve as a good lesson for us, because it has shown us that the paralysis of power and will is the first step towards complete degradation and oblivion. We lost confidence for only one moment, but it was enough to disrupt the balance of forces in the world.

As a result, the old treaties and agreements are no longer effective. Entreaties and requests do not help. Anything that does not suit the dominant state, the powers that be, is denounced as archaic, obsolete and useless. At the same time, everything it regards as useful is presented as the ultimate truth and forced on others regardless of the cost, abusively and by any means available. Those who refuse to comply are subjected to strong-arm tactics.

What I am saying now does not concern only Russia, and Russia is not the only country that is worried about this. This has to do with the entire system of international relations, and sometimes even US allies. The collapse of the Soviet Union led to a redivision of the world, and the norms of international law that developed by that time — and the most important of them, the fundamental norms that were adopted following WWII and largely formalised its outcome — came in the way of those who declared themselves the winners of the Cold War.

Of course, practice, international relations and the rules regulating them had to take into account the changes that took place in the world and in the balance of forces.

However, this should have been done professionally, smoothly, patiently, and with due regard and respect for the interests of all states and one’s own responsibility. Instead, we saw a state of euphoria created by the feeling of absolute superiority, a kind of modern absolutism, coupled with the low cultural standards and arrogance of those who formulated and pushed through decisions that suited only themselves. The situation took a different turn.

There are many examples of this. First a bloody military operation was waged against Belgrade, without the UN Security Council’s sanction but with combat aircraft and missiles used in the heart of Europe. The bombing of peaceful cities and vital infrastructure went on for several weeks. I have to recall these facts, because some Western colleagues prefer to forget them, and when we mentioned the event, they prefer to avoid speaking about international law, instead emphasising the circumstances which they interpret as they think necessary.

Then came the turn of Iraq, Libya and Syria. The illegal use of military power against Libya and the distortion of all the UN Security Council decisions on Libya ruined the state, created a huge seat of international terrorism, and pushed the country towards a humanitarian catastrophe, into the vortex of a civil war, which has continued there for years. The tragedy, which was created for hundreds of thousands and even millions of people not only in Libya but in the whole region, has led to a large-scale exodus from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe.

A similar fate was also prepared for Syria. The combat operations conducted by the Western coalition in that country without the Syrian government’s approval or UN Security Council’s sanction can only be defined as aggression and intervention.

But the example that stands apart from the above events is, of course, the invasion of Iraq without any legal grounds. They used the pretext of allegedly reliable information available in the United States about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. To prove that allegation, the US Secretary of State held up a vial with white power, publicly, for the whole world to see, assuring the international community that it was a chemical warfare agent created in Iraq. It later turned out that all of that was a fake and a sham, and that Iraq did not have any chemical weapons. Incredible and shocking but true. We witnessed lies made at the highest state level and voiced from the high UN rostrum. As a result we see a tremendous loss in human life, damage, destruction, and a colossal upsurge of terrorism.

Overall, it appears that nearly everywhere, in many regions of the world where the United States brought its law and order, this created bloody, non-healing wounds and the curse of international terrorism and extremism. I have only mentioned the most glaring but far from only examples of disregard for international law.

This array includes promises not to expand NATO eastwards even by an inch. To reiterate: they have deceived us, or, to put it simply, they have played us. Sure, one often hears that politics is a dirty business. It could be, but it shouldn’t be as dirty as it is now, not to such an extent. This type of con-artist behaviour is contrary not only to the principles of international relations but also and above all to the generally accepted norms of morality and ethics. Where is justice and truth here? Just lies and hypocrisy all around.

Incidentally, US politicians, political scientists and journalists write and say that a veritable “empire of lies” has been created inside the United States in recent years. It is hard to disagree with this — it is really so. But one should not be modest about it: the United States is still a great country and a system-forming power. All its satellites not only humbly and obediently say yes to and parrot it at the slightest pretext but also imitate its behaviour and enthusiastically accept the rules it is offering them. Therefore, one can say with good reason and confidence that the whole so-called Western bloc formed by the United States in its own image and likeness is, in its entirety, the very same “empire of lies”.

As for our country, after the disintegration of the USSR, given the entire unprecedented openness of the new, modern Russia, its readiness to work honestly with the United States and other Western partners, and its practically unilateral disarmament, they immediately tried to put the final squeeze on us, finish us off, and utterly destroy us. This is how it was in the 1990s and the early 2000s, when the so-called collective West was actively supporting separatism and gangs of mercenaries in southern Russia. What victims, what losses we had to sustain and what trials we had to go through at that time before we broke the back of international terrorism in the Caucasus! We remember this and will never forget.

Properly speaking, the attempts to use us in their own interests never ceased until quite recently: they sought to destroy our traditional values and force on us their false values that would erode us, our people from within, the attitudes they have been aggressively imposing on their countries, attitudes that are directly leading to degradation and degeneration, because they are contrary to human nature. This is not going to happen. No one has ever succeeded in doing this, nor will they succeed now.

Despite all that, in December 2021, we made yet another attempt to reach agreement with the United States and its allies on the principles of European security and NATO’s non-expansion. Our efforts were in vain. The United States has not changed its position. It does not believe it necessary to agree with Russia on a matter that is critical for us. The United States is pursuing its own objectives, while neglecting our interests.

Of course, this situation begs a question: what next, what are we to expect? If history is any guide, we know that in 1940 and early 1941 the Soviet Union went to great lengths to prevent war or at least delay its outbreak. To this end, the USSR sought not to provoke the potential aggressor until the very end by refraining or postponing the most urgent and obvious preparations it had to make to defend itself from an imminent attack. When it finally acted, it was too late.

As a result, the country was not prepared to counter the invasion by Nazi Germany, which attacked our motherland on June 22, 1941, without declaring war. The country stopped the enemy and went on to defeat it, but this came at a tremendous cost. The attempt to appease the aggressor ahead of the Great Patriotic War proved to be a mistake which came at a high cost for our people. In the first months after the hostilities broke out, we lost vast territories of strategic importance, as well as millions of lives. We will not make this mistake the second time. We have no right to do so.

Those who aspire to global dominance have publicly designated Russia as their enemy. They did so with impunity. Make no mistake, they had no reason to act this way. It is true that they have considerable financial, scientific, technological, and military capabilities. We are aware of this and have an objective view of the economic threats we have been hearing, just as our ability to counter this brash and never-ending blackmail. Let me reiterate that we have no illusions in this regard and are extremely realistic in our assessments.

As for military affairs, even after the dissolution of the USSR and losing a considerable part of its capabilities, today’s Russia remains one of the most powerful nuclear states. Moreover, it has a certain advantage in several cutting-edge weapons. In this context, there should be no doubt for anyone that any potential aggressor will face defeat and ominous consequences should it directly attack our country.

At the same time, technology, including in the defence sector, is changing rapidly. One day there is one leader, and tomorrow another, but a military presence in territories bordering on Russia, if we permit it to go ahead, will stay for decades to come or maybe forever, creating an ever mounting and totally unacceptable threat for Russia.

Even now, with NATO’s eastward expansion the situation for Russia has been becoming worse and more dangerous by the year. Moreover, these past days NATO leadership has been blunt in its statements that they need to accelerate and step up efforts to bring the alliance’s infrastructure closer to Russia’s borders. In other words, they have been toughening their position. We cannot stay idle and passively observe these developments. This would be an absolutely irresponsible thing to do for us.

Any further expansion of the North Atlantic alliance’s infrastructure or the ongoing efforts to gain a military foothold of the Ukrainian territory are unacceptable for us. Of course, the question is not about NATO itself. It merely serves as a tool of US foreign policy. The problem is that in territories adjacent to Russia, which I have to note is our historical land, a hostile “anti-Russia” is taking shape. Fully controlled from the outside, it is doing everything to attract NATO armed forces and obtain cutting-edge weapons.

For the United States and its allies, it is a policy of containing Russia, with obvious geopolitical dividends. For our country, it is a matter of life and death, a matter of our historical future as a nation. This is not an exaggeration; this is a fact. It is not only a very real threat to our interests but to the very existence of our state and to its sovereignty. It is the red line which we have spoken about on numerous occasions. They have crossed it.

This brings me to the situation in Donbas. We can see that the forces that staged the coup in Ukraine in 2014 have seized power, are keeping it with the help of ornamental election procedures and have abandoned the path of a peaceful conflict settlement. For eight years, for eight endless years we have been doing everything possible to settle the situation by peaceful political means. Everything was in vain.

As I said in my previous address, you cannot look without compassion at what is happening there. It became impossible to tolerate it. We had to stop that atrocity, that genocide of the millions of people who live there and who pinned their hopes on Russia, on all of us. It is their aspirations, the feelings and pain of these people that were the main motivating force behind our decision to recognise the independence of the Donbas people’s republics.

I would like to additionally emphasise the following. Focused on their own goals, the leading NATO countries are supporting the far-right nationalists and neo-Nazis in Ukraine, those who will never forgive the people of Crimea and Sevastopol for freely making a choice to reunite with Russia.

They will undoubtedly try to bring war to Crimea just as they have done in Donbas, to kill innocent people just as members of the punitive units of Ukrainian nationalists and Hitler’s accomplices did during the Great Patriotic War. They have also openly laid claim to several other Russian regions.

If we look at the sequence of events and the incoming reports, the showdown between Russia and these forces cannot be avoided. It is only a matter of time. They are getting ready and waiting for the right moment. Moreover, they went as far as aspire to acquire nuclear weapons. We will not let this happen.

I have already said that Russia accepted the new geopolitical reality after the dissolution of the USSR. We have been treating all new post-Soviet states with respect and will continue to act this way. We respect and will respect their sovereignty, as proven by the assistance we provided to Kazakhstan when it faced tragic events and a challenge in terms of its statehood and integrity. However, Russia cannot feel safe, develop, and exist while facing a permanent threat from the territory of today’s Ukraine.

Let me remind you that in 2000–2005 we used our military to push back against terrorists in the Caucasus and stood up for the integrity of our state. We preserved Russia. In 2014, we supported the people of Crimea and Sevastopol. In 2015, we used our armed forces to create a reliable shield that prevented terrorists from Syria from penetrating Russia. This was a matter of defending ourselves. We had no other choice.

The same is happening today. They did not leave us any other option for defending Russia and our people, other than the one we are forced to use today. In these circumstances, we have to take bold and immediate action. The people’s republics of Donbas have asked Russia for help.

In this context, in accordance with Article 51 (Chapter VII) of the UN Charter, with permission of Russia’s Federation Council, and in execution of the treaties of friendship and mutual assistance with the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic, ratified by the Federal Assembly on February 22, I made a decision to carry out a special military operation.

The purpose of this operation is to protect people who, for eight years now, have been facing humiliation and genocide perpetrated by the Kyiv regime.

To this end, we will seek to demilitarise and de-Nazify Ukraine, as well as bring to trial those who perpetrated numerous bloody crimes against civilians, including against citizens of the Russian Federation.

It is not our plan to occupy the Ukrainian territory. We do not intend to impose anything on anyone by force. At the same time, we have been hearing an increasing number of statements coming from the West that there is no need any more to abide by the documents setting forth the outcomes of World War II, as signed by the totalitarian Soviet regime. How can we respond to that?

The outcomes of World War II and the sacrifices our people had to make to defeat Nazism are sacred. This does not contradict the high values of human rights and freedoms in the reality that emerged over the post-war decades. This does not mean that nations cannot enjoy the right to self-determination, which is enshrined in Article 1 of the UN Charter.

Let me remind you that the people living in territories which are part of today’s Ukraine were not asked how they want to build their lives when the USSR was created or after World War II. Freedom guides our policy, the freedom to choose independently our future and the future of our children. We believe that all the peoples living in today’s Ukraine, anyone who want to do this, must be able to enjoy this right to make a free choice.

In this context I would like to address the citizens of Ukraine. In 2014, Russia was obliged to protect the people of Crimea and Sevastopol from those who you yourself call “nats”. The people of Crimea and Sevastopol made their choice in favour of being with their historical homeland, Russia, and we supported their choice. As I said, we could not act otherwise.

The current events have nothing to do with a desire to infringe on the interests of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. They are connected with defending Russia from those who have taken Ukraine hostage and are trying to use it against our country and our people.

I reiterate: We are acting to defend ourselves from the threats created for us and from a worse peril than what is happening now. I am asking you, however hard this may be, to understand this and to work together with us so as to turn this tragic page as soon as possible and to move forward together, without allowing anyone to interfere in our affairs and our relations but developing them independently, so as to create favourable conditions for overcoming all these problems and to strengthen us from within as a single whole, despite the existence of state borders. I believe in this, in our common future.

I would also like to address the military personnel of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Comrade officers,

Your fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers did not fight the Nazi occupiers and did not defend our common motherland to allow today’s neo-Nazis to seize power in Ukraine. You swore the oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people and not to the junta, the people’s adversary which is plundering Ukraine and humiliating the Ukrainian people.

I urge you to refuse to carry out their criminal orders. I urge you to immediately lay down arms and go home. I will explain what this means: the military personnel of the Ukrainian army who do this will be able to freely leave the zone of hostilities and return to their families.

I want to emphasise again that all responsibility for the possible bloodshed will lie fully and wholly with the ruling Ukrainian regime.

I would now like to say something very important for those who may be tempted to interfere in these developments from the outside. No matter who tries to stand in our way or all the more so create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history. No matter how the events unfold, we are ready. All the necessary decisions in this regard have been taken. I hope that my words will be heard.

Citizens of Russia,

The culture and values, experience and traditions of our ancestors invariably provided a powerful underpinning for the wellbeing and the very existence of entire states and nations, their success and viability. Of course, this directly depends on the ability to quickly adapt to constant change, maintain social cohesion, and readiness to consolidate and summon all the available forces in order to move forward.

We always need to be strong, but this strength can take on different forms. The “empire of lies”, which I mentioned in the beginning of my speech, proceeds in its policy primarily from rough, direct force. This is when our saying on being “all brawn and no brains” applies.

We all know that having justice and truth on our side is what makes us truly strong. If this is the case, it would be hard to disagree with the fact that it is our strength and our readiness to fight that are the bedrock of independence and sovereignty and provide the necessary foundation for building a reliable future for your home, your family, and your motherland.

Dear compatriots,

I am certain that devoted soldiers and officers of Russia’s armed forces will perform their duty with professionalism and courage. I have no doubt that the government institutions at all levels and specialists will work effectively to guarantee the stability of our economy, financial system and social wellbeing, and the same applies to corporate executives and the entire business community. I hope that all parliamentary parties and civil society take a consolidated, patriotic position.

At the end of the day, the future of Russia is in the hands of its multi-ethnic people, as has always been the case in our history. This means that the decisions that I made will be executed, that we will achieve the goals we have set, and reliably guarantee the security of our motherland.

I believe in your support and the invincible force rooted in the love for our fatherland.

Heroic Ukrainian marine blows himself up with bridge to hold off Russian troops

0

Defiant Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are preparing to fight Russia’s army to the death, vowing on Friday to ‘give Putin hell from every house’ when his men make their advance through the major city of Kyiv in a stunning show of resilience.

Among them was a marine who blew himself up along with a bridge in the Kherson region near Crimea in a heroic act that slowed down Russian troops. The marine was named by the General Staff of the Armed Forces as Vitaly Shakun. He was manning the Henichesk bridge in the Kherson region when Russians advanced and mined it.

According to a post on the General Staff’s Facebook page, the battalion decided the only way to stop them was to blow up the bridge. Shakun had no time to escape. He told his comrades he was going to detonate, and second later they heard an explosion.

His efforts and that of the Ukrainian armed forces are significantly slowing down the Russians – one senior defense official cited by CNN said Russian troops are meeting ‘more resistance’ than they anticipated.

‘I can’t give you an exact geographic location of where they are, but they are not moving on Kyiv as fast as they anticipated they would be able to. [They are] meeting more resistance than they expected,’ they added.

On the streets of Kyiv, former leader Petro Poroshenko was among the many civilians forming territorial defense squadrons, ready to take on Putin’s men when they present themselves. In an emotional interview on CNN, Poroshenko held up his Kalashnikov and vowed never to give in to the Russian leader or his army.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky uploaded a video on Thursday night showing that he was still in Kyiv, at Government offices.

‘We are all here. Our soldiers are here. The citizens are here and we are here. We defend our independence. That’s how it’ll go. Glory to our defenders, both male and female, glory to Ukraine!’ he said.

French Club FC Metz to Construct 6 Stadiums in Honour of Senegal’s AFCON Heroes

0

French Ligue 1 side FC Metz will construct six stadiums in honour of the six Senegalese players groomed by partner club Génération Foot, ace African football journalist Usher Komugisha reports.

This is being done by the French outfit in honour of the contribution of their former players who helped Senegal clinch the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

FC Metz and Génération Foot have had a long term partnership that gives the former exclusive rights to the best of talents from the Dakar-based academy in exchange for state-of-the-art equipment and financial assistance.

Génération Foot is the brainchild of former Senegalese footballer Mady Touré, whose career was short-circuited by injuries.

The academy was established in 2000 and after failed attempts to secure a partnership deal with AS Nancy, Touré reached an agreement with FC Metz in 2003 and have since enjoyed a fruitful marriage with the French club.

The deal gives Metz exclusive rights to sign the best of talents from Génération Foot while the French side supports the academy with equipment and financial assistance to churn out more talents.

A new 10-year deal between the two parties was signed in 2020 to continue the fruitful relationship

Who are the players the stadiums will be named after
Liverpool star and scorer of the winning penalty Sadio Mane, captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, Bouna Sarr, Pape Matar Sarr and Habib Diallo were all groomed by Génération Foot.

The aforementioned players all played for FC Metz before moving on to varying degrees of success in Europe.

Senegal unveils state of the art stadium edifice in Diamniadio

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the government of Senegal has outdoored the country’s newly-built state of the art stadium in Diamniadio in the presence of thousands of fans of the national team.

Having won the Africa Cup of Nations early this month, the West African football powerhouse followed their success with the completion of the stadium which will host all their international matches.

At a ceremony in the country’s capital Dakar, Senegal President Macky Sall revealed the stadium is named after the former head of state, Abdoulaye Wade.

I’m ready to take up the task of presidency in PF-Chishimba Kambwili

0

Former National Democratic Congress Leader, now opposition Patriotic Front (PF) member Chishimba Kambwili has disclosed his intention to contest the PF presidency at the forthcoming party convention.

And Kambwili says the loss of the PF in the 2021 general election was a great political revolution by the country against the PF and Edgar Lungu.

Kambwili said he was personally ready to take up the task of presidency, saying he has been a member of the opposition PF and had labored to build his name politically.

“Personally, I am more than ready to take up the role of presidency of the PF but I want to say I will not go outside of the realms of PF to discuss the coming convention of PF because I feel this is an internal matter, I am only a senior member of the PF, I am not a policy maker and not a member of the Central Committee,” he said

Mr. Kambwili said he contributed to the PF votes during the past general elections, dismissing as baseless allegations by some party members that he had contributed to the downfall of the opposition party.

“If the PF won the election, today could there be such allegations, check the results of the areas where I campaigned and see the results of the areas that I did not campaign in and also were the areas where I went physically held rallies physically and those places I did not visit and that will give you the answer, I have contributed to the numbers of the PF both during the 2016 and 2021 general election,” he said.

He alleged that some shallow minded people whom he termed as new entrants and likened to visitors in the PF, wanted to discredit him using deceit.

“Where there is competition some people who are shallow minded want to discredit others using deceit when they know for sure that my campaign during the 2016 election was a booster to the PF victory, so someone who wants to stand as the PF today, who hasn’t even worked for the PF who joined yesterday would come and bring boys to make those allegations, I feel very sorry for them,” he stated.

ZANIS reports that Mr Kambwili attributed the loss of the PF during the 2021 general elections to a great political revolution of the country against the PF.

“What happened in the last election was purely a political revolution, and when there is a political revolution in the country, you can even get a stone and make it stand against a very popular person and the stone will still win the election because the people are against the political party just like it happened in 1964 and it also happened when president Michael Sata won and also to the PF in the recent election,” he indicated.

Mr. Kambwili said despite his campaign, people were set on the revolution and that his contribution to the PF would be best judged from his contribution in the 2016 PF victory in which his campaign was a booster.

He said this when he answered questions from journalists during a press briefing held at his residence in Luanshya today.

Only Cabinet Can Decide On Chiluba Assets Issue’ – Justice Minister

0

By KETRA KALUNGA

ONLY cabinet can decide whether or not the assets of former President Frederick Chiluba can be given back to his family because the matter was already by the courts, says Justice Minister, Malambo Haimbe.

Mr Haimbe said whether or not the government should consider the plea made by the Chiluba family to have the forfeited assets given back is a decision that should be made by the full cabinet.

Mr. Haimbe was responding to increased calls for the government to consider the plea from Dr. Chiluba’s family to have his assets given back to them.

He however said, Zambians should respect the decision of the court regarding the forfeiting of assets for the former President to the government.

Mr. Haimbe said in an interview that the court made its decision in line with the provisions of the law and that should be respected.
That not withstanding, he said, “Giving back the assets to the family of late President Chiluba is a decision that should be made by the high office but in my view, the law should be respected because this is the matter that has been before the courts.”
And Mr. Haimbe defended the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on concerns from the public that they delayed concluding the case that started in 2002.

He said it is normal for cases that are before the courts of law to take a long time to be concluded, therefore people should be patient if they see justice prevail.

“There is an adage that justice rushed is justice destroyed so people should be patient, cases take long and should not be rushed,” Mr. Haimbe said.

Dr. Chiluba’s children Darlington and Kaindu who are part of the administrators of the estate have said the move by the state was unfair and underhand because their father claimed the property while the state appealed to grab his property after he died.
They revealed that the ACC waited until Dr. Chiluba died before commencing legal proceedings on account that he had not claimed the property in good time, therefore, creating an impression that the property was acquired through proceeds of crime, when this was not the case.- Daily Nation S

We’ve achieved a lot in 6 months – Kawana

0

By Walusungu Lundu
THE last six months has been exciting, there’s a lot we have achieved it feels like six years, Thabo Kawana has boasted.

Kawana who is Ministry of Information and Media director said when he featured of Spring TV’s “Crossfire” programme on Monday that the new dawn administration has in the last six months paid a good number of retirees among other people.

Kawana further boasted that the government has been able to pay schools in rolling out the free education policy.

“Within six months, we have been able for example to pay a good number of retirees… We have cleared all the farmers including those that supplied excess maize to FRA. We have paid off councils as far as the equalisation fund is concerned. We have paid off the arrears of the CDF, the 2020/2021 CDF arrears we have cleared all those,” he said. “We have been able to pay schools in rolling out our free education policy. And therefore the amount of work that has been achieved it feels like it’s the work that has been achieved over the period of six months yet we have only been in office for six months.”

On corruption fight, Kawana said the government had given law enforcement agencies autonomy to carry out their work without any aorta of instruction on whom to follow and whom not to follow.

“We have given the law enforcement agencies autonomy, freedom and independence to carry out their work without interference, without undue influence, without any aorta of instruction on whom to follow and whom not to follow. That is the biggest milestone. We have brought back professionalism in the law enforcement agency,” he said.

Kawana argued that there was no soft approach to corruption as others allege.

“You don’t want to take cases to court like we saw in the previous regime where for example then minister of health Dr Chitalu Chilufya was called by ACC, interrogated and taken to court and the state says this man is fit to have such then court wonders why is he in court. What you want is if people are taken before the courts of law, it’s because the state is able to achieve a conviction,” he said.

“So that is not done in a hurry, it is done systematically. So those that are used to quick fixes feel frustrated and feel like it’s taking long but it is never too long for Justice. It is said world over that the wheels of grind slow but they grind.”

Touching on the issue of cadreism, Kawana said what cadres in the previous regime were carrying out was extortion.

He said criminality perpetuated by people in the name of cadres would not be condoned under the new dawn.

Kawana said the government is prioritising fixing the economy so that it begins to perform in as far as job creation is concerned.

And Kawana lamented that UPND found a sink hole, an economy which was badly damaged.

“ZNS is putting up the marijuana farms and they are going to do three cites, each site will employ 1,000 people, and that’s already 3,000. We have got the police, the army…” he said. “And within government itself there are a lot of departments that are employing. We know the economy is biting. We know the cost of living is high because we live with you, we eat what you eat. We go to the same shops that you go to but hang on a little bit. We found a sink hole, we found an economy which was so damaged that it created a sink hole. Now for us to build we have to backfill that hole. We didn’t find it at a place where we could pick it up and go. We found it at zero, so we have to start at zero. And that’s what we are doing now. There was no economy to talk about.”

Meanwhile, Kawana said the roadmap as to when doctors would be employed is there stressing that the programme commenced in January.

He explained that in the 11,200 health personnel to be employed, there are others to be considered such as nurses, physicians, clinicians and cleaners, among others.

Kawana failed to clearly state as to whether all the 800 doctors, some of whom have been volunteering, would be employed./LM

Divisions among Health professions emerge over recruitment

By Kombe Mataka

Divisions have erupted among Health Professions Association of Zambia after some members disagreed with the protest staged by unemployed doctors on Monday.

The consortium which constitutes of 13 health profession associations of Zambia.

Some named health profession associations including the Biological Scientists of Zambia, Radiological Society of Zambia and the Zambia Institute of Environment Health of Zambia yesterday asked Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) president who was until his resignation chairman of the Consortium to step down as he had gone against the the Association’s on the staged protest.

President of it the Biological scientists of Zambia Mumba Musonda said when she called in during the Diamond Live TV Programme on Wednesday, which was featuring Dr Sampa, Biomedical Union of Zambia Dinael Mwimbe Radiological Society of Zambia vice president Muleya Moshas and Zambia Institute of Environmental Health Haven Chitukutu, that Dr Sampa had left the Consortium after he was asked to step down by after the he backed the protest held by unemployed doctors under the association he presides over.

“The nature in which the RDAZ left the Consortium was actually saddening bit however , when we came together as a consortium , we came up with an agreement that whatever we were going to do, we would agree. Out agreement collectively was not to hold a protest. When we met as a consortium, we asked Dr Sampa to step down. We came to the conclusion that we needed to dialogue with the ministry of health. The protest was not going to be the best way to resolve this issue . So the breaking away of the doctors (RDAZ) was after a decision was made that the chairperson should step down following that protest which took place. We think. It was something personal,” she said.

And Consortium member Joseph Kamfwa who also joined the emotional debate through the phon said to that the Consortium did not approve with certain actions take by Dr Sampa the consortium chairperson then.

“For example , we agreed that we were supposed to meet to look into whether we can proceed with the a protest. We later agreed to give it time. Now to our surprise the doctors proceed with the protest before getting back to the consortium. We feel the protest paused a threat to the dialogue which we were beginning to creat with the Ministry of Information . It does not make alot of sense where a single profession comes out and demand that a certain number recruited,” he said.

“If you look you go back to 2013. There is a policy where private doctors who get engaged in private institutions get paid l. The interns are paid. But they are claiming that those who are volunteering are not paid. It is not true.”

He said all the professions registered under the Health Professions Act were all important.

“Looking at what our friends are doing, we do not think that it is for the benefit of the consortium. When we asked Dr Sampa to step back. He decided to leave the consortium before we could proceed further.”

But Dr Sampa responded saying that health minister Sylvia Masebo had been working with a few ministers of the consortium to frustrate the efforts of the entity in pushing for the recruitment of health workers.

“Any health worker understands the importance of time. We cannot work without a time frame . So whatever you are told . It has to be attached with some time frame,” Dr Sampa argued.

“It’s not true that the not true that the minister agreed to meet the consortium . People need to be honest . When the things started to unfolding where we we could write letters, the minister was not responding. By the way, we didn’t write two letters. The first letter we wrote was requesting for a meeting. The second one was after we had even gone to State House to meet the presidential aid to ask him if he could help us meet the minister because the minister was refusing to meet us . We were advised to go back and engage . We wrote another letter . The minister never responded . The only thing I received as chairperson of the consortium was some displeasure from the minister.

And Mwiinde said that some associations were dormant and could not speak for it’s ‘ suffering’ members like RDAZ and a few others were doing.
“It is so annoying that we see different tongues with the consortium when the goal is one,” he said.

“Engagements are failing. Where is the cowdice coming from? Is the minister intimidating anyone? If that was the case, they should have told us that they are being intimidated by the minister so that we help.”

And Chitukutu said the consortium had resolved to give the government more time after the minister engaged them on Monday as the doctor’s protest was going on.

“We are looking at the the overall picture. As Health practitioners, the way we are trained, we uphold. We uphold high ethical consideration,” he said.

Thousands of African Students Are Stuck in Ukraine

0

Thousands of Africans studying in the Ukraine are desperate to leave as Russia invades the country. But with flights grounded and other options limited, there isn’t much their governments can currently do.

“Everyone is under pressure, there have been explosions in different cities, including my city Kyiv,” said 23-year-old Nigerian student Sarah Ajifa Idachaba, who is studying medicine in the Ukraine capital along with her older sister.

“Me and my sister are in panic because we don’t know what to expect. We are not safe and we are not sure about leaving here because the airport is shut down,” Idachabe told DW, speaking shortly after Russia launched an invasion of the country early on Thursday morning.

Ukraine has closed its airspace to civilian flights, including from Kyiv airport, citing the high safety risk.

Idachaba said she and her sister felt abandoned as air raid sirens were heard across Kyiv and some residents sought refuge in metro stations and air raid shelters.

“We are citizens of Nigeria and we need help. Please don’t neglect us, don’t leave us alone,” she said.

Nigerian Temi Rosabel Tseye-Okotie, who is also studying medicine in Ukraine, shares Idachaba’s feelings.

“Honestly? We are scared, we don’t know what to do. The information we are getting from Nigeria is basically that we are on our own,” she told DW.

Nigerians feel left alone

Some 4,000 Nigerian students are currently studying in the Ukraine. A number of them took to social media to share their frustration about the lack of information from the Nigerian government.

“President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria has already told his citizens in the Ukraine to help themselves,” wrote Ron Peters on DW Africa’s Facebook page. ” It would have surprised many if he had offered help.”

On Thursday afternoon, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, speaking in a video released on Twitter, said that once airports re-opened, his government would assist with the evacuation of those who wanted to leave.

Morocco, Egypt acted early

Nigerians make up the second biggest group of foreign students in the Ukraine. The biggest group are from Morocco with 8,000 students, while Egyptians are in third place with 3,500 students.

Nigerians point to the differing approaches of Morocco and Egypt in the lead up to the Russian invasion.

Morocco’s government called on its citizens two weeks ago to leave Ukraine as soon as possible, while the head of the Egyptian community in Ukraine, Ali Farouk, said a week ago that authorities in Ukraine and the Egyptian embassy were coordinating the return home of Egyptian students.

No way of leaving Ukraine

Africans make up more than 20% of Ukraine’s international students, studying in many different towns and cities throughout the country. Many are attracted by the country’s good technical and medical schools combined with relatively low fees.

These students are also expressing their fear for their safety as explosions were heard in several parts of the country, including Kyiv, the second largest city of Kharkiv and the Black Sea port of Odessa on Thursday.

“We are very worried about our safety and will like to ask for assistance as regards evacuation from Ukraine to a safer place until the situation here in Ukraine is calm,” Liberian Augustine Akoi Kollie, a fifth year medical student based in Ternopil in western Ukraine, wrote in a social media message to DW.

“Please help us.”

While Zimbabwe has said it was prepared to fly its citizens out of Ukraine, Zimbabwean student Mellisa Charuvira told DW that the offer didn’t help in the current situation because there was no way to leave Ukraine at the moment.

“There is no transportation, there are no buses from Kyiv to other cities,” she said in tears.

Zimbabwe doesn’t have an embassy in Ukraine. Its closest diplomatic representation in the German capital, Berlin.

“We have called the ambassador of Zimbabwe in Berlin and she said she is organizing something. Right now we don’t have any protection. We can’t get out through any border. My appeal is to evacuate us,” Charuvira told DW.

‘Stay indoors’

The Nigerian Embassy in Kyiv on Thursday advised Nigerian nationals living in Ukraine to “remain calm but be very vigilant and be responsible for their personal security and safety.”

Richard, a Nigerian living in Kyiv, is trying to follow that advice.

He can see people packing their belongs into cars and fleeing their homes, said Richard, who prefers not to use his last name.

He told DW that many hope to head west through Ukraine, away from the border to Russia, in an attempt to reach safety on the Polish border.

But he doesn’t want to follow their example.

“I will stay indoors,” he told DW. “The roads are unsafe. My advice is to stay home. It’s not good to make decisions when you are in a panic mode,” he said.

He wouldn’t even venture out to buy necessities, he said, as the “queues in front of shops and pharmacies are endless.”

Boris Johnson Unveils Largest And Most Severe Sanctions Against Russia

0

Boris Johnson has unveiled the “largest and most severe package” of sanctions “that Russia has ever seen” after Moscow launched a brutal invasion of Ukraine by land, sea and air.

Speaking in the Commons, the Prime Minister called the Russian President a “blood-stained aggressor who believes in imperial conquest” and was “always determined to attack his neighbour, no matter what we did”.

The Prime Minister told MPs “this hideous and barbarous venture of Vladimir Putin must end in failure” as he revealed London will now target all major Russian banks, five oligarchs and more than 100 companies and individuals, Mr Johnson told MPs.

The UK will Immediately freeze assets worth £154bn in VTB – the second largest bank in Russia – while Rostec, Russia’s biggest defence company with over two million employees, with exports of over £10bn of arms each year, will also face strict sanctions, in measures designed to “hobble” Russia’s economy.

The five “elite individuals”, who have close links to the Kremlin, will see their assets frozen and cannot travel to the UK or interact with British businesses.

The elite individuals include Kirill Shamalov, Russia’s youngest billionaire, who was married to Putin’s second daughter, Katerina Tikhonova, and a former economic adviser to the Kremlin. Petr Fradkov, CEO of Promsvyazbank, and son of the former boss of the FSB, Denis Bortnikov, deputy president of the state-owned VTB Bank, Yury Slyusar, director of United Aircraft Corporation, and Elena Aleksandrovna Georgieva, the chairwoman of the board of Novicom bank, which bankrolls Rostech.

Putin will stand condemned in the eyes of the world and of history,” he said. “He will never be able to cleanse the blood of Ukraine from his hands.

“Although the UK and our allies tried every avenue for diplomacy until the final hour, I am driven to conclude that Putin was always determined to attack his neighbour, no matter what we did.”

He said the G7 agreed to work in unity to “maximise the economic price that Putin will pay for his aggression”, saying that must include “ending Europe’s collective dependence on Russian oil and gas that has served to empower Putin for too long”.

He also said “countries that together comprise about half the world economy are now engaged in maximising economic pressure on one that makes up a mere 2%”.

Legislation will be introduced to prohibit the ability of all major Russian companies to raise finance on UK markets and stop the Russian state raising sovereign debt on the UK market.

The UK will also ban Russian aircraft with the state-owned Aeroflot line from landing in the UK and extend the current sanctions regime to Belarus, as Minsk’s forces are believed to be aiding Putin’s assault.

The PM also revealed that measures on unexplained wealth orders from the Economic Crime Bill will be brought forward and introduced before the Easter recess.

The PM said the new powers will allow the UK to “totally to exclude Russian banks from the UK financial system” and stop them from accessing sterling and clearing payments through the UK. He said about half of Russia’s trade is in dollars and sterling, and said the US is taking similar measures to the UK.

He said: “These powers will also enable us to ban Russian state and private companies from raising funds in the UK, banning dealing with their securities and making loans to them.

“We will limit the amount of money that Russian nationals will be able to deposit in their UK bank accounts and sanctions will also be applied to Belarus for its role in the assault on Ukraine.”

Mr Johnson will chair another Cabinet meeting and a second Cobra meeting in the coming hours as the Government considers how to continue its response to Russian aggression in Ukraine.

It comes after Putin said that allies of Ukraine who try to interfere with his attack will “face consequences greater than any you have faced in history”.
