TEACHER RECRUITMENT NOT A FAVOUR- OPPOSITION LEADER WEIGHS IN

By Pesulani Mwale

New Heritage Party Vice President, Samuel Kasankha, has charged that the recent recruitment of teachers by government is not a favour to those selected but merely fulfilling the fundamental right to work.

Kasankha notes that Article 6 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) provides that everyone has the right to work.

He adds that Article 11 of the aforementioned document also provides that everyone has the right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food, clothing and housing.

Kasankha says this ordinarily means that it is the duty of government to employ or create opportunities to the effect, hence no favours have been done by fulfilling these obligations.

He however acknowledges the goodwill by government in sticking with their promise in relation to employing teachers.

Kasankha says the jubilation over the employment of 30,496 teachers must be seen in its right context as a government obligation in line with international laws the country has ratified.

He has since congratulated all the recruited teachers, calling it as a relief from being rescued from unemployment, however expressing sadness that more than two-thirds of total applicants where left out.
