BRICKLAYER JAILED 3 YEARS FOR STEALING FOOD

A 36-year-old Bricklayer of Simutwe Village in Mwenda Chiefdom, Chikakanta district, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing food items worth K1, 000.

This is in a matter where Dennis Chilala was charged with house breaking and theft, contrary to Section 301 (a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that on March 28, 2024, Chilala did break into the house of Petronela Simubili and stole a bag of mealie meal, 5 kilograms of Kapenta, 5 kilograms flour,15 kilograms dry maize, in addition to 5 kilograms of washing powder.

In mitigation, the Defendant asked the court to exercise leniency, saying he was remorseful of his action and he was suffering from Epilepsy.

When delivering the verdict, Senior Resident Magistrate Chisanga sentenced Chilala to three years imprisonment with hard labour, stating that the Court could not consider his plea of being sick because he was able to think of stealing and make money at that time.

  1. The Judiciary’s bias against low-income law breakers is evident here. White collar criminals who have stolen millions go in for a mere two years.
