I DIDN’T INCITE UNZA STUDENTS TO RIOT – GABRIEL BANDA

SOCIALIST Party youth chairman Gabriel Banda has denied instigating a riot at the University of Zambia last month.

Banda 33 of Lusaka’s Kalingalinga area is charged with Proposing violence or breach of the law to assembly.

It is alleged that Banda who is former UNZASU president on September 18, 2023 without lawful excuse to UNZA assembly made a statement to cause an act calculated to lead to destruction or damage to property.

After Banda incited public violence at the learning institution, several students went on the rampage on great east road and smashed vehicles in protests of the cancellation of UNZA student union elections by management due to lack of funds.

Appearing before magistrate Trevor Kasanda, the clamorous Banda pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Kasanda has since admitted the accused to free bail in the sum of K50, 000 on conditions that he provides two sureties employed in the civil service bound in the like sum, to be paid in their own recognizance.

Banda is represented by Isaac Simbeye, Simon Mwila, Norma Siwila and Timmy Munalula.

Trial will commence on November 23.
