2000 CBU STUDENTS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS

The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) has awarded student loans to 2,125 eligible first year students at Copperbelt University for the 2022/2023 academic year.

Senior Corporate Communications Officer, Chiselwa Kawanda, notes that HELSB received a total of 4,846 applications for sponsorship at Copperbelt University, out of which 4,664 applicants were eligible and 182 were ineligible for sponsorship.

Kawawanda explains that the ineligible applicants are as a result of completing Grade 12 before 2018 and non-attachment of required documents to the student loan applications.

She adds that other reasons are that some applicants were already awarded scholarships at other Institutions, students being older than 24 years of age and others were admitted to diploma and evening programs.

Kawanda also reveals that 8 applications were recieved from students with disabilities, comprising of 7 males and 1 female.

She notes that of the 4,846 applicants, 3,067 are male while 1,779 are female, representing 63% and 37% respectively.

Kawanda says 2,015 are from rural areas while 2,831 are from urban areas, representing 42% and 58% respectively.

Of the 2,125 awarded, 1,378 have been admitted to pursue Science based programmes and 747 have been admitted to pursue Art based programmes.

HELSB is currently supporting 6,795 students at Copperbelt University.
