Powerlines down

Malawians are currently experiencing nationwide blackout following the shut down of major hydro-electric power station at Nkula and Tedzani.

In a press statement issued on Monday evening, March 13, 2023, Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) has shut down all its major Hydro Electric Power stations over Tropical Cyclone Freddy that has affected its generation system.

Egenco indicates that the heavy rains are sweeping away a lot of trash and depositing it within the power stations, a development that is affecting power generation.

The statement further indicates that the stations are being closely observed.

As of March 13, Cyclone Freddy has claimed 99 lives while displacing 10,000 houses due to heavy rainfall since Friday, March 10, 2023.

Meanwhile President Lazarus Chakwera has declared state of disaster over Tropical Cyclone Freddy impact.
