GOVT URGED TO DECLARE 2023/2024 FARMING SEASON A NATIONAL DISASTER

By Nonhlanhla Phuti

The Small-Scale Farmers’ Development Association-SAFADA- is urging government to declare the 2023/2024 farming season a national disaster as the country is likely to record a 50% national yield reduction.

SAFADA Executive Director Boyd Moobwe says this is because of the severe drought and extreme heat the country is experiencing which has affected crops and therefore an anticipated 50% national yield reduction which will cause severe hunger at household level.

Mr. Mombwe is of the view that declaring a national disaster will allow government sufficient time to mobilize resources and implement effective measures to mitigate the impact on small-scale farmers and vulnerable families.

He has also argued a statement by Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo that the country has enough stock, stating that with the present climatic change scenario; there is no guarantee of food security in the country.
