Renowned political analyst has lambasted the Patriotic Front (PF) and the United Party for National Development (UPND) for cultivating the concept in which the leader of the party is more powerful than their institutions.
Political analyst Elder Mabhunu says both President Edgar Lungu and Hakainde Hichilema have become so powerful that their parties cannot recall them.
He says instead of the institutions being bigger, the issue with the two parties is totally the opposite.
“We need an opposition parties like the UPND which is stronger than the leader.
“When you see a party getting lesser votes than its president it shows that parties are not building strong institutions, but leaders,” he says.
People are following individuals and not parties, as such the institutions will struggle in the event that the leader dies or leaves the party.
‘’Today the PF and UPND have no political stamiy to recall or their presidents to account because they have become so powerful than the parties themselves,” says Mabhunu.
He add that this style of running parties have tendency of creating mini dictators on the part of the leaders.-zambianeye
