HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER CALLS FOR QUICK REVISION OF PUBLIC ORDER ACT

Human rights defender Brebner Changala is calling for the quick revision of the Public Order Act if people are to be guaranteed enjoyment of their Freedom of Assembly.

Mr. Changala has also expressed shock at the arrest of 23 people led by Economic Freedom Fighters –EFF- Leader Kasonde Mwenda for protesting against the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriage way road project last Friday.

In an interview, Mr. Changala has charged that it is hypocritical for a government that has promised people a full enjoyment of their rights to arrest them for doing so and is dismayed by the continued abuse of power by the police who were notified about the protest on time.

On Friday, police arrested 23 people unlawful assembly after they gathered to protest against the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriage Way Road Project while the master minder of the protest, Economic Freedom Fighters -EFF- president Kasonde Mwenda was reprimanded on Sunday after he turned himself in at the police station.
