LAZ ACCUSES UPND OF ABUSING THE PUBLIC ORDER ACT, EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT

By Correspondent
THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) says it is disappointed by the continued abuse of the Public Order Act by the UPND led government.

LAZ president Lungusani Zulu notes with sadness the level of abuse.

Zulu says it is strange that the Police had over a 100 officers to stop the rally from going ahead when they could have used the same to ensure public order during the PF rally.

He says the UPND are going against the freedoms and rule of law they promised to uphold.

Zulu observes that like many other Zambians, they had hope that the UPND will not abuse Public Order Act in the manner they were doing especially that they were victims.

And Zulu has expressed concern at the trend of detaining suspects pending investigations by law enforcement agencies.

He says suspects, regardless of their nationality, must not be detained for investigations, and in any event not beyond the prescribed 24 hours before being brought before court.

Police denied the PF permit to hold a political rally last week on the basis of security concerns.
