Advocates for National Democracy and Development (ANDD) privatization and subsequent closure of over 200 companies in the early 90s was a blow to Dr Kaunda’s vision of Zambia becoming an industrialized state.

ANND Executive Director Samuel Banda said Privatization was a well intentioned scheme that should have benefitted Zambians by transferring ownership of state companies to ordinary Zambians.

Mr Banda said but due to the self-serving interests of some people involved in the process saw the closure of multiple companies leaving people destitute and in untold poverty.

“People like Hakainde Hichilema, leader of the UPND, were at the forefront of the privatization, and instead of ensuring Zambia is the winner of the process, they used the opportunity to become wealthy,” he said.

“They now have so much wealth, and like that is not enough, they still want to accrue more and keep talking about privatizing more institutions,”.

He further said Zambians are aware of the repercussions of privatization, adding that a tour of the Copperbelt is enough to show anyone the suffering that was created by HH and his team.

Mr Banda has since urged Zambians to scrutinize leaders critically and ensure the same mistakes are not made like in the past.

” HH and his team were entrusted with a process that should have distributed wealth to many Zambians, however, the process seemed to have only benefitted them leaving people unemployed,” he said.

“Can you imagine what would happen if the same people were to be entrusted with the whole country,” Mr Banda questioned
