NO CLERGY WILL BE SUMMONED TO POLICE UNLESS AN OFFENCE IS COMMITTED – THABO KAWANA

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Media, Mr. Thabo Kawana, has clarified that no clergy member has been or will be summoned to the police except when they commit an offense in their individual capacity. He emphasized that the law would take its course in such cases.

Kawana further reiterated government’s open door policy when dialogue is needed, which has been demonstrated through His Excellency the President’s consultations and dialogue meetings with the Church at State House. He assured the public that no clergy member would be intimidated or arrested for speaking out, and that alternative channels would be employed to engage and discuss matters relating to national concerns.

Kawana emphasized that government values meaningful engagement with all stakeholders, including the Church, as it tackles various developmental challenges. He also noted that the government was committed to dialogue instead of fear or intimidation tactics, unlike previous incumbents who arrested and deported clerics who spoke out.

With the clarification from the Permanent Secretary on government’s stance on summoning clergy members, stakeholders will find assurance in the government’s commitment to engagement and peaceful dialogue as a means of addressing national concerns.

  1. The problem is that our police is always drunk with power, it’s a culture of dictatorship. It will take a long time for them to come to terms that their job is to serve the masses. This is a huge embarrassment for the police and they’re now denting the image of our innocent Bally.

  2. Two things here
    Number one
Why are our Catholic priests involving themselves in partisan politics? Number two there are people in our ZP working to discredit the head of state. Where were the voices of our priests when one Hakainde Hichilema was been hounded arrested and detained?

  3. Kubwela, you may be young or naive to understand the Catholic doctrine, one is to bring God to People and people to God.
Social and justice, when the Catholic priests speak , they are speak through what they know such that people is government are struggling to understand or notice as power has corrupted them. These priests live and work constantly with the most marginalised, poor of the poorest, voiceless and handicapped. The church is in areas which many of the poorest live and the government officials never visit only during campaign times. They are not looking for brown or white envelopes and the Catholic intelligence is more powerful than the office of the president .
All the past governments have at one point faced the Catholic leaders who have spoken openly and critically criticised them without fear or favour. All they speak about are have been the truth. This government is not going to be the least or first to be criticised openly. If HH using his government machinery and people with ill hearts go after the priests their ends will be misery and total regret. Fight the might Catholic Church , I can 100% reassure you HH will live to regret for his remaining days on planet earth. This just a warning . Go to archives of news papers or people with good memories will tell you the truth.
