OPPOSITION CHALLENGE HICHILEMA’S DEBT CANCELLATION APPEAL

By Wendson Mavoro

Opposition leaders across the political divide have urged President Hakainde Hichilema to devise a workable debt dismantling strategy and not depend on goodwill from creditors.

Patriots for Economic Leader, Sean Tembo, has described as embarrassing President Hichilema’s request to the Saudi government to convert Zambia’s debt into grants.

New Heritage Party President, Chishala Kateka, says Zambia is too endowed to be asking for debt cancellations.

Ms. Kateka has called on the UPND administration to strategically manage Zambia’s natural wealth and raise money for debt servicing.

On Thursday 24th March 2022, President Hichilema requested the Saudi government to consider writing off Zambia’s 13 million US dollar debt during a meeting with the Saudi Arabian Envoy Ahmed Kattan at State House.
