STOP ZANGENA POSTINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA – CIVIL SERVANTS ADVISED

THE Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) has advised civil servants to desist from posting salary updates on social media as this exposes them to scammers.

ZICTA Cyber Security Specialist Emmah Kapambwe says her Authority has noted with concern the increase in the number of complaints involving teachers, nurses and some police officers especially towards month-end.

ZANIS reports that the ZICTA Cyber Security Specialist said this in Solwezi when she made a presentation during a stakeholder’s sensitisation meeting on Cyber Security attended by cross section of society.

Ms. Kapambwe said social media postings have exposed public service workers and making them vulnerable to scammers in the recent past.

“Of late we have seen a number of complaints coming through involving teachers, nurses and even police men and women, they are being targeted by scammers because of the Zangena postings on social media,” she said.

She advised people to avoid posting too much personal information on social media as this attracts scammers and expose them to harm.

Ms Kapambwe also advised people especially those aged between 35 and 65 years to guard against online gender-based violence, a trend that is seemingly becoming common.

Meanwhile, ZICTA Copperbelt Regional Officer Christabel Simbulo said digital financial crime is not easy to investigate as most of the people involved are not locally based hence the delay in capturing the perpetrators.

Ms Simbulo disclosed that the authority is however constantly upgrading the system to deal with new trends citing the tightening of the sim card registration system to include a facial image of the sim card owner.

“From the time we introduced this requirement, we have seen a huge reduction in complaints of people being scammed. So far, over 2 million fake sim cards have been deactivated,” she said.

She stated that ZICTA has introduced an option to report a missing or lost phone on the *707# short code and encouraged people to make use of that option so that the authority can lock the device and protect the account as well as contacts on it.

.…as starvation looms in Zambia

21.03.24

We watched President Hakainde Hichilema on Tuesday, 19th March during what appeared like a ´special paid for´ appearance on CNN and BBC where he went on an international ´pity trip´ begging for international relief and blaming the looming hunger and starvation in Zambia on bad weather.

As United Kwacha Alliance(UKA), However, we want Zambians and the international community to know that we are in this unfortunate ‘starvation mode’ today due to poor planning and total systems failure by the Hichilema government NOT climate change, because:

1. Zambia would not have found itself in this embarrassing position of passing around the ´begging bowl´ for food from the international community if President Hichilema did not sell (export) the maize strategic reserves of 1.5 million metric tonnes.

2. The crop Mr Hichilema sold cheaply to our neighbouring countries and East Africa was grown over three farming seasons before he assumed office. It was reserved for a ‘proverbial rainy day’ like what we have right now.

3. Zambia would not be in this embarrassing food insufficient situation if President Hichilema had just listened to science and stakeholders that stated that Zambia and other countries in Southern African region would experience severe droughts. INSTEAD PRESIDENT HICHILEMA WENT IN ‘SELLING MODE’.

4. When stakeholders expressed concern about the selling of maize, Agriculture Minister Mtolo Phiri went before Parliament and opined that “We shall continue to export maize/mealie meal because we are food sufficient, we have enough maize.”

5. Official weather reports indicated that the rain pattern has shifted to the north. Instead of channeling resources to the north for a comparative maize and food harvest, Mr Hichilema seems to be in denial and thinks otherwise.

It was momentarily good to watch President Hichilema, normally a proud man, swallow his pride and declare the current drought a ´national disaster´ coming short of declaring a ´hunger disaster´.

However, we were dismayed to see his Chief Government Spokesman Mr. Cornelius Mweetwa stage a media trip to Southern province and paraded journalists before bags of maize and declare that “Zambia is food sufficient.”

In conclusion, we urge President Hichilema to accept responsibility that he acted irrationally when he exported maize to our neighbouring countries and East Africa at a low cost and will now start importing it at a HUGE cost.

Beyond acceptance, President Hichilema postulates that he is a man of integrity, UKA call for him to apologise and resign as Republican President for thrusting our people into poverty. He is not fit to be President.

President Hichilema must not mislead the international community with words like ‘climate change´ when it is pure personal failure to plan.

INRIS DISASTER: WHAT WILL HICHILEMA EVER GET RIGHT?- Fred M’membe

INRIS DISASTER: WHAT WILL HICHILEMA EVER GET RIGHT?

There’s no doubt that Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his inept and corrupt league have failed to efficiently, effectively, and in an orderly manner implement the Intergrated National Registration Information System (INRIS) project whose overall objective was to improve civil registration and identity management processes through digitisation and automation.

A lot of money has already been carelessly and fraudulently spent on this clearly failed project, which they have corrupted in an attempt to enrich themselves and manipulate the country’s electoral process to fraudulently keep themselves in power beyond 2026.

Instead of wasting more money and risking plunging this country into electoral chaos, we demand that the project be stopped immediately and a credible audit of it be instituted. The country deserves to know the truth about what is going on with this project? Why is this government so inclined to do wrong things? What will Mr Hichilema ever do well with sufficient honour and integrity?

The specific objectives of INRIS included, among other things, the following:

1. To digitise the management of civil registration and national identity in Zambia.

2. To link the management of civil registration and issuance of national identity cards.

3. To create a centralised biometric enabled national database of citizens and non-citizens living in Zambia.

4. To issue biometric enabled identification cards.

5. To resolve the civil registration and identity management problems associated with the current manual systems (for example, centralised certification, low birth, and death registration coverage, among others).

6. To electronically integrate stakeholder institutions to the INRIS system for verification purposes.

7. To decentralise certification services for civil identity documents.

These appear to be noble objectives that have been frustrated by greed, incompetence, and political dishonest. Unfortunately, we have to wait for more honest leadership and government to realise these objectives.

In the meantime, we demand that the project be halted immediately, with a trustworthy audit conducted, and the public be told the truth about it.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION ON THE DECISIONS MADE BY CABINET AT THE 5TH CABINET MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, 18TH MARCH, 2024.

0

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA ON THE DECISIONS MADE BY CABINET AT THE 5TH CABINET MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, 18TH MARCH, 2024.

The President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, called for the 5th Cabinet Meeting in the Year 2024, on Monday, 18th March, 2024, at State House to deliberate on policy and legislative matters aimed at improving the general living standards of the people.

1. The Customs and Excise (Suspension)(Wheat) Regulations, 2024.

Cabinet approved issuance of a Statutory Instrument namely, the Customs and Excise (Suspension) (Wheat) Regulations, 2024, that provides for the suspension of duty on the importation of 100,000 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat.

In 2015, a ban on wheat importations was introduced in order to protect the local producers of wheat and wheat products.

The industry has indicated that it does foresee a deficit of wheat during the year and has proposed to import 100,000 MT of wheat by 30th August, 2024. Occasionally, the Ministry of Agriculture issues permits to allow importation of specific quantities of wheat to meet domestic supply shortfall. As such, the Ministry of Agriculture has given a ‘no objection’ to the importation so as to meet the shortfall.

This exemption is necessary in order to allow the millers to meet the shortfall in the supply of wheat on the local market and to allow millers to continue production in the face of low supply of the commodity before commencement of the harvesting season when national wheat stocks are expected to be sufficient.

2. International Affairs:

(a) Ratification of the Inter-Governmental Memorandum of Agreement on the Establishment of the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Cabinet approved the ratification of the Inter-Governmental Memorandum of Agreement (IGMoA) on the establishment of the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) as part of Zambia’s commitment to SADC through the SADC protocol on Energy and in accordance with Article 26 and Article 27 of the SACREEE IGMoA.

The aim of the SADC protocol on Energy is to address common challenges hindering Governments to increase access to modern energy and improved energy security across the nations and the SADC region as a whole. It is also meant to facilitate and coordinate availability of sufficient, reliable, least cost energy services that will assist in the attainment of economic growth and the eradication of poverty whilst ensuring the environmentally sustainable use of energy resources in the SADC region.

Ratifying the Inter-Governmental Memorandum of Agreement on the establishment of the SACREEE will positively contribute towards Zambia’s increased access to modern energy services and improved energy security by promoting market-based uptake of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and energy services.

(b) Ratification of the revised Nacala Development Corridor (NDC) Agreement amongst the Republics of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

Cabinet also approved ratification of the revised Nacala Development Corridor (NDC) Agreement among the Republics of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia to ensure safe, cost – effective and efficient movement of goods and persons within the length of the Nacala Development Corridor.

The Nacala Development Corridor is a multi-modal transport and logistics infrastructure network within and through the Republics of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. It is one of the important trade corridors in Southern Africa and its development is critical to enhancing regional and international trade competitiveness, particularly for the landlocked countries of Zambia and Malawi.

In order for the Agreement to come into force, there is need for the Member States to ratify it and deposit the instrument of ratification with the SADC Secretariat.
(c) Ratification of the Agreement amending the Tripartite Rail Transport (TRT) Agreement on the Nacala Development Corridor.

Another matter approved for ratification by Zambia is the Agreement amending the Tripartite Rail Transport Agreement on the Nacala Development Corridor among the Republics of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

Ratification of the Agreement will enhance regional connectivity and contribute to the development of a strong and competitive rail transport industry in the Southern sub-region. Implementation of the railway project will reduce transport costs and extend the lifespan of the road networks in the three Member States as most bulk cargo will be transported by rail. The transportation of heavy goods by road has deteriorated the conditions of the roads in Zambia, thereby raising the cost of maintenance.

(d) Ratification of The Tripartite Road Transport Agreement on The Nacala Development Corridor among The Republics of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

Cabinet further, approved ratification of the Tripartite Road Transport Agreement among the Republics of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia, in order to facilitate safe and efficient movement of goods and vehicles across the borders of the three Member States.

This Agreement is primarily focused on harmonising, streamlining and simplifying transport and customs procedures for international road transport and also seeks to improve coordination and integration of various road transport development projects undertaken by the stakeholders within the three Member States.

3. Accession to the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on a Communications Procedure.

Cabinet approved Zambia’s accession to the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure so as to provide for the protection of children’s rights as an avenue for appeal in an event of dissatisfaction after the exhaustion of local remedies.

The Optional Protocol seeks to provide children and child rights activists with an avenue to report child rights violations that may not be able to be resolved using our domestic avenues. Accession to the Optional Protocol will, therefore, enhance the enjoyment and protection of human rights for all children in Zambia. Further, it will reinforce the international system of accountability for human rights, as a major step towards the full protection of children’s rights and the participatory approach of the UNCRC.

4. Appointment of Board Members:

(a) Appointment of Directors for the Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS).

During the Meeting, Cabinet approved the appointment of the full seven (7) member Zambia National Building Society Board.

The Zambia National Building Society Act in Section 3A Subsection (2) requires that the Minister of Finance appoints not less than seven (7) persons to constitute the Board of Directors for ZNBS.

Having a full Board of Directors in place for the financial institution will ensure effective policy and strategic direction and will enhance adherence to good corporate tenets.

(b) Appointment of Board Members of the National Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (NVRC).

In winding up debate for the day, Cabinet approved the appointment of a three (3) member Board of the National Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, in accordance with the provision of the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 6 of 2012.

As provided for in the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 6 of 2012 Part VI, under section 53 (1), the Minister of Community Development and Social Services is empowered to appoint the Board for the National Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, in order to ensure continued policy direction of the institution.

SPEAKER REFUSES TO ALLOW QUESTION ON PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S BREACH OF THE CONSTITUTION

Lusaka-Thursday,21st March 2024

The Speaker of the National Assembly has refused to accept a question on why President Hakainde Hichilema has allowed the sale of Mopani Copper Mine to Delta Mining without approval of the National Assembly.

Article 210(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia states that;

(2) A major State asset shall be sold, transferred or otherwise
disposed of, as prescribed, subject to the approval of the National
Assembly signified by a vote of at least two-thirds of the Members
of Parliament.

(3) For the purposes of this Article, “major State asset” includes a parastatal and equity held by the Government, as prescribed.

Government has sold 51% shares of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines-Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH) in Mopani Copper Mines to Delta Mining Limited (Delta) of Dubai.

In a letter dated 21st March, 2024 to Pambashe MP, Hon. Ronald Chitotela, stated that Parliament does not admit questions on the interpretation of the Constitution in accordance with Stand Irders 71(1)(c).

The breach of the Constitution by the President is an impeachable offence.

Below is the letter
QUESTION UNDER STANDING ORDER 76

I refer to your letter dated 13th March, 2024 and note the contents contained therein.

Kindly note that while I admitted your Question under Standing Order 76 on the floor of the House, it has become apparent upon careful scrutiny of your question that it is inadmissible.

The inadmissibility of the Question stems from Standing Order 71(1) (c) of the National Assembly of Zambia Standing Orders, 2021, which provides as follows:
“71. (1) a question shall be admissible if it-
(c) does not ask for an expression of opinion or the solution of an abstract legal question of a hypothetical proposition.

It is clear that in the response to your Question, the Minister will be expected to provide legal opinion of the meaning of Article 210 of the Constitution.

Such interpretation of a
legal nature goes against the spirit of the above Standing Order and, therefore, renders your Question inadmissible
In this regard, the Question although important, cannot be processed due to the
provisions in the Standing Orders.

India’s capital Delhi becomes most polluted city in the world

0

Delhi has been named the most polluted capital city in the world for 2023. India, along with the rest of South Asia, is still dealing with smog and poisonous air.

A study by a group called IQAir found that nine out of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world are in India.

Delhi is the third dirtiest city and the dirtiest capital. The air there has a lot of tiny particles that can be harmful, with an average of 102. 1 micrograms per cubic meter.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries try to keep the average PM2.5 concentration at 5 micrograms per cubic meter.

Breathing in dirty air with particle pollution can make you sick with asthma, cancer, lung disease, strokes, and other health problems. It also says that PM2. 5 can stick to the lungs and get into the blood more easily.

Delhi has bad air all year, but it’s especially bad in winter. Last year, schools and colleges were closed for a few days because the air was not safe to breathe.

In November, New Delhi put limits on the amount of cars on the road to reduce air pollution. But after a few days, pollution covered cities in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Some businesses and schools had to shut down in certain areas.

Reporting from Delhi, the news reporter from Sky News, Neville Lazarus, said on Thursday that pollution is spreading like a disease in the city. Activists have claimed that pollution is the fifth biggest cause of death in India.

He said that a report from the British Medical Journal found that every year in India, 2. 18 million people die because of air pollution.

The numbers are really big. About 30,000 people die in a year due to air pollution. In Delhi, 80 people die every day because of air pollution.

This is a big problem that is hurting the economy. Families are spending almost 4% of their money on healthcare for illnesses caused by air pollution. One sickness makes them very poor.

“But what worries me in this report is that we have noticed air pollution coming from smaller cities in Tier Two, like the unimportant city of Begusarai in the northern state. ”

IQAir’s report said that Begusarai, a city in the Indian state of Bihar, has the worst pollution in the world. The air there has an average annual PM2. 5 concentration of 118. 9 μg/m³

In Pakistan, Lahore had the fifth highest air pollution with an average of 99. 5μg/m³

Bangladesh is the most polluted country.

The report says that Bangladesh has the most pollution in the world, with an annual PM2. 5 concentration of 79. 9μg/m³

Pakistan is the second most polluted country in the world, with India being the third and Tajikistan being the fourth. This makes the South Asia region the most polluted in the world.

IQAir said that only seven countries followed the WHO’s yearly PM2. 5 rule. These countries are Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Iceland, Grenada, Mauritius, and Finland.

The information in the report comes from over 30,000 stations around the world that measure air quality. These stations are located in 134 different places.

GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER MOPANI TO NEW INVESTOR AS EQUITY PARTNER

GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER MOPANI TO NEW INVESTOR AS EQUITY PARTNER

GOVERNMENT has handed over Mopani Copper Mine to International Resources Holding as the equity partner.

IRH has taken up 51 percent of the Mine’s shares while ZCCM-IH returns 49 percent.

ZANIS reports that speaking during the handover ceremony in Kitwe today, President Hakainde Hichilema disclosed that the delay in unlocking Mopani Copper Mine was due to hidden debt complications that were shipped on the mine by the previous government.

Mr. Hichilema said a debt of over USD $1.7 million was dumped in Mopani which the government had to clear before an investor could take up the Mine.

President Hichilema said his government has since reduced the debt to USD $576 million.

“In this deal, Mopani is not only receiving capital injection but it will also see a sustainable debt restructuring, our government inherited debt not only from private and official creditors but in Mopani also, people saw Mopani as a place for dumping liabilities,” he said.

The Head of State noted that the handover of Mopani to the IRH will rejuvenate the Copperbelt province to its old glory.

The President assured the mine suppliers and contractors of better job opportunities and job stability to the Mine workers.

Meanwhile, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe challenged the new investor to improve Mopani Copper Mine into a world class asset.

Mr. Kabuswe said he was happy that a good deal was arrived at after a protracted search and negotiations for an equity partner for Mopani.

And International Resources Holdings Chief Executive Officer Ali Alrashdi expressed the company’s commitment to creating value from the mine asset for the benefit of various stakeholders.

Mr. Alrashdi said his company’s goal is to serve the people, the community and ensure sustainability in the operations of the asset.

ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Kakenenwa Muyangwa announced the clearance of the USD $1.5 million debt that was left by Glencor at Mopani which he said makes the company’s balance sheets clean and stronger going forward.

Mr. Muyangwa also stated that the money that has so far been injected into Mopani will help the mine complete the on-going expansion project and other capital projects to sustain the 11,000 jobs the company has.

Earlier, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo assured the new investor of the local people’s support and readiness to work with them.

Mr. Matambo said his office is also open for any consultation.

He stated that the handover of Mopani to United Arab Emirates’ International Resources Holdings (IRH) brings relief to the people of Copperbelt who have been suffering economically because of reduced productions at Mopani Copper Mine.

NO INTEREST ON NONPERFORMING LOANS – COURT

NO INTEREST ON NONPERFORMING LOANS – COURT

By Dickson Jere

Can lender charge interest on a non performing loan?

That was a question that befell the Court of Appeal in a recent case that was determined few weeks ago.

Having defaulted on ZMK 2 million loan with Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC), the borrower was slapped with bill of K3.3 million, that included interest at 12% per annum. The loan became nonperforming in July 2015 but was charged interest up to September 2021.

The High Court ruled that the borrower must pay all amounts due in full or lose the mortgaged property.

That decision prompted the Appeal.
The borrowers argued that the law proscribes payment of interest on loans that are non-performing for three months. They based the argument on the new provision in the Banking and Financial Services Act (BFSA) of 2017.

However, CEEC argued that it was not a bank regulated under the BFSA as it was created by own Act of Parliament with aim of empowering citizens.

Three Judges of Court of Appeal heard the matter and analyzed the provisions of the law regarding payments of interest on loans that have become non-performing.

“A reading of these provisions shows that interest may only be charged on a non-performing loan when the principal and/or interest has not been in arrears for more than 90 days,” the Judges ruled.

“The effect of the provision being the proscribing of the charging of interest on non performing loans and the interest due should not exceed the principal amount owing at the time the loan becomes non performing,” the Judges further said.

The Court explained that once the loan has become non-performing after 90 days of default, the lender must then recover his principal amounts plus interest in arrears immediately. The lender, according to the Court, can then enforce his securities as opposed to charging interest on non performing loans in perpetuity.

“Interest contractually agreed is allowed on the principal from date of the loan until the facility became non performing,” the Court further explained.

On CEEC, the court ruled that the principle of law found in the BFSA also covers institutions like CEEC even though not a bank per se.

“In our view, the Respondent can be classified on the same footing as a financial institution and as such section 110 of BFSA is applicable to it,” the Court said and reversed the High Court findings.

The case – Chilola Intertrade and Others V CEEC (CAZ Appeal No. 282/2022) – has now been sent for assessment in order to remove all the interest charged after the loan became non-performing.

It will be very interesting to see how this interpretation can be extended to money lenders who continues to charge interest that is more than the principal amount borrowed.

Mpulungu Harbor defends 93% profit drop

Following audit findings that Mpulungu Harbour Corporation Limited (MHCL) Company profit dropped by 93% attributed to a reduction in cargo volume passing through the Port, MHCL has revealed that the Reduction in cargo throughput and 93% profit loss was due to Limited shipping capacity, Fuel Shortage in Burundi, Reduced export of sugar to the Great Lakes region and Low Clinker exports.

According to the auditor general’s report for the financial years ended 31st December 2021 and 2022, Mpulungu Harbour Corporation Limited (MHCL) Company’s profit reduced by 93% from over K4 million in 2021 to about K363 thousand in 2022.

The AG report also revealed that the reduction in profit was mainly attributed to a reduction in cargo volume passing through the Port from 231,000 metric tons in 2021 to 185,000 metric tons in 2022.

However according to a press query response from Mpulungu Harbour Corporation Limited (MHCL) to the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, MHCL Acting Managing Director Katowa Kabunda revealed that between 2022 and 2023 the Mpulungu Port ship calls were restricted because of inadequate cargo ship operators on the Lake amidst many competing Ports of call, a situation he said was exacerbated by the sinking of two ships in February and March 2022 which led to ship calls reducing from 308 to 267.

Kabunda said that the Persistent fuel shortages in Burundi negatively affected vessel operators’ turnaround time and calls per month.

He said that a Surge in domestic market demand for Sugar reduced quantities available for export adding that the increase in supply chain costs made the Mpulungu Corridor less attractive as an export route.

“Reduction in cargo throughput and net profit was a result of the following factors; a) Limited shipping capacity – Mpulungu Port ship calls are restricted because of inadequate cargo ship operators on the Lake amidst many competing Ports of call. This situation was exacerbated by the sinking of two ships (2,200Mt lost capacity per ship call) in February and March 2022. As a consequence, ship calls were reduced from 308 to 267 between 2022 and 2023. b) Fuel Shortage in Burundi – Persistent fuel shortages in Burundi negatively affected vessel operators’ turnaround time and calls per month. c) Reduced export of sugar to the Great Lakes region –Surge in domestic market demand for Sugar reduced quantities available for export. In addition, the increase in supply chain costs made the Mpulungu Corridor less attractive as an export route,” he said.

Kabunda noted that the demand for Clinker dropped from 112,000 Mt (2021) to 46,000 Mt (2022), due to supply contract credit terms disagreements between Burundi Cement Company (BUCECO) and Chilanga Cement Plc following a… Follow the link to read the full article https://zambianbusinesstimes.com/mpulungu-harbor-defends-93-profit-drop/

GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO IMPROVING SERVICE TO CITIZENS

Yesterday, the Minister of Justice Hon. Mulambo Haimbe responded to a question in Parliament raised by Kalabo Central MP Chinga Miyutu who wanted to find out at what intervals local courts, countrywide, receive grants from Government and whether there are any plans to increase the amount allocated to each grant

Below are the highlights:

✅ The Minister disclosed that Government has increased funding disbursed towards local court operations to K1,741, 643.18 from K550,000.00 to ensure smooth dispensation of justice

✅ The local courts receive a sum of K1,741, 643.18 which is sent to all the 10 provinces quarterly. The quarterly funding was previously K550,000 Kwacha and erratic.

✅ Mr. Haimbe said while previous disbursements were erratic, the funds are now received by the local courts consistently and Government will continue to increase the allocation to the judiciary for the purposes of infrastructure buildings and rehabilitation.

✅ He said since the New Dawn took over administration over the past two and half years, his Ministry was striving to improve infrastructure and basic services under the judiciary to deliver justice to citizens.

✅ The New Dawn Government must be commended for increasing the amount threefold from a situation where the entire judicial local court structure was only receiving K500, 000 for operations.

✅ He added that the allocation is consistent and it is distributed to the local courts in an equal and even manner regardless of their location.

✅ Government will always view local courts and the court system generally as important because matters of justice cannot be taken lightly and trivialized.

✅ He said it is for this reason the superior courts will always play their part to ensure that justice is delivered in the criminal justice process and funded accordingly.

✅ Government is aware of the state of the various court infrastructure across the country including the local courts, and the Ministry has recorded an improvement in the last two years and six months from what was there in the past.

✅ Government acknowledges the critical steps taken by some members of parliament where CDF is used to bolster the efforts of the judiciary by constructing some of these facilities.

✅ The judiciary has since increased allocation towards the lower court infrastructure including the subordinate court and the local court.

El Nino’s shadow looms large: Kariba Dam at risk as water levels plummet

0

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has issued a stark update on the water situation at Kariba Dam, revealing a concerning decline in river flows and lake levels.

The alarming trend is attributed to the ongoing El Nino weather phenomenon, which has caused significantly reduced rainfall in the Zambezi River catchment area.

According to the ZRA, river flows at both the Chavuma and Victoria Falls gauging stations have shown a worrying decrease compared to last year and historical averages.

This decline in river inflows has directly impacted Lake Kariba, where water levels are receding instead of rising as they typically would during this time of year.

Below-average rainfall during the current season has severely restricted the amount of water entering the lake.

The El Nino effect further compounds the issue. El Nino disrupts normal weather patterns, leading to less precipitation across Southern Africa, including the Zambezi basin.

This lack of rainfall creates a domino effect, reducing river flows and ultimately causing a significant drop in Kariba’s water levels.

The ZRA has also provided technical details regarding the impact on Kariba’s Live Storage, the portion of the reservoir usable for hydropower generation.

With the current water levels, Kariba’s Live Storage sits at a precarious 14.16% of its capacity, raising concerns about potential impacts on power generation in the region.

“The effects of the El Niño weather conditions being experienced globally and over the Southern African Region in particular have continued to negatively impact the Zambezi.

“River inflows into Lake Kariba. This situation continues to greatly impact the Lake Kariba water levels.

“It is noteworthy that the lake level is lower during this period than was recorded last year during the same period.

“Furthermore, the lake level is currently receding, contrary to its historical hydrological performance where it should have been rising during this period of the year.

“The obtaining recession in the lake levels is mainly due to the below average rainfall received during the on-going 2023/2024 rainfall season,” the authority noted.

The ZRA’s update underscores the serious threat posed by El Nino-induced drought to the water security and hydropower generation capacity of the Kariba Dam.

The report serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching consequences of climate change and the urgent need for sustainable water management practices.

US Justice Department sues Apple for monopolising smartphone market

0

The US Justice Department and more than a dozen states have filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, saying its devices and software are a monopoly that gives it vast profits at the expense of customers.

The DOJ, along with 16 state and district attorneys general, accuses Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its phones. The parties allege that Apple “selectively” imposes contractual restrictions on developers and withholds critical ways of accessing the phone as a way to prevent competition from arising, according to the release.

“Apple exercises its monopoly power to extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants, among others,” the DOJ wrote.

The government points to several different ways that Apple has allegedly illegally maintained its monopoly:

Disrupting “super apps” that encompass many different programs and could degrade “iOS stickiness” by making it easier for iPhone users to switch to competing devices

Blocking cloud-streaming apps for things like video games that would lower the need for more expensive hardware

Suppressing the quality of messaging between the iPhone and competing platforms like Android

Limiting the functionality of third-party smartwatches with its iPhones and making it harder for Apple Watch users to switch from the iPhone due to compatibility issues

Blocking third-party developers from creating competing digital wallets with tap-to-pay functionality for the iPhone

“For years, Apple responded to competitive threats by imposing a series of ‘Whac-A-Mole’ contractual rules and restrictions that have allowed Apple to extract higher prices from consumers, impose higher fees on developers and creators, and to throttle competitive alternatives from rival technologies,” DOJ Antitrust Division Chief Jonathan Kanter said in a statement.

The case is being filed in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey. Attorneys general from New Jersey, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia joined the DOJ in the complaint.

The enforcers are asking the court to stop Apple from “using its control of app distribution to undermine cross-platform technologies such as super apps and cloud streaming apps,” prevent it from “using private APIs to undermine crossplatform technologies like messaging, smartwatches, and digital wallets,” and keep it from “using the terms and conditions of its contracts with developers, accessory makers, consumers, or others to obtain, maintain, extend, or entrench a monopoly.”

They also ask the court for any other relief needed to restore competition. On a background call with reporters, DOJ officials would not address if they would seek to break up Apple if it wins at the liability stage. They said any relief would need to be tied to what the court ultimately finds Apple to be liable for.

At a press conference on Thursday announcing the lawsuit, DOJ Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said Apple has maintained “a chokehold on competition” and “smothered an entire industry” through its shift from “revolutionizing the smartphone market to stalling its advancement.”

Kanter added that Apple was a “significant beneficiary” of the DOJ’s suit against Microsoft over 20 years ago, and this case aims “to protect competition and innovation for the next generation of technology.”

US Attorney General Merrick Garland acknowledged the resource imbalance the government is up against, facing a company worth trillions of dollars. “When you have an institution with a lot of resources that, in our view, is harming the American economy and the American people, it’s important for us to allocate our resources to protect the American people,” Garland said. “And that is certainly the case where individual Americans have no ability to protect themselves.”

In a statement, Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz said the lawsuit “threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets. If successful, it would hinder our ability to create the kind of technology people expect from Apple — where hardware, software, and services intersect. It would also set a dangerous precedent, empowering government to take a heavy hand in designing people’s technology. We believe this lawsuit is wrong on the facts and the law, and we will vigorously defend against it.”

Apple plans to move to dismiss the case, an Apple spokesperson told reporters in a background briefing with several news outlets on Thursday. The company also disagrees with the relevant market the DOJ defined for the case, believing it should be the global smartphone market, not just the US one, a spokesperson said.

“UKA HAS COME TO STAY…govt’s attempt to stop UKA is an exercise in futility”- MAKEBI ZULU

“UKA HAS COME TO STAY,” MAKEBI ZULU

…government’s attempt to stop UKA is an exercise in futility…

Smart Eagles lsk. Thur. Mar 21, 2024

The United Kwacha Alliance will see the light of day whether the government likes it or not , Renowned lawyer, Makebi Zulu, has charged.

Speaking on 5 FMs burning issue program in Lusaka this morning, Zulu stated that the United Party for Ntional Development and President Hakainde Hichilema have failed to govern the nation of Zambia and their failures have resulted in untold suffering and misery for the Zambian people who now have to look for an alternative come 2026 to salvage the pathetic situation that Zambia finds itsself in .

He defined UKA as the coming together of different political parties to speak with one voice ,to save the people of Zambia from the dominance of the UPND which hasn’t lived upto its promises causing a lot of anxiety and discontentment across the nation .

” They promised that mealie meal would be at K50, it is now at K400. They said Fuel would be at K12 per litre. Today, it is at 26. They said fertiliser would be at K250, and today is at over a thousand kwacha,” Zulu said.

He said the failure of the government to register UKA a month after the process to have it registered by its stakeholders had been done as evidence of a government that is not interested in doing the right thing .

” When Miles Sampa held an illegal meeting, which he later called a PF convention, they were in the office late in the night to process his paperwork . Yet it’s been more than a month since UKA logged in the paperwork, and nothing has been done about it,” said Zulu.

Zulu, however, emphasised that UKA being a collision of political parties did not need to be registered to function. He gave an example of the UPND alliance, which was not registered anywhere to operate, yet the alliance functioned during the 2021 elections. He said it was in the same way that the UPND alliance had functioned that UKA would also function.

“Government is misguided if it thinks UKA must be registered to function. It is fooling itsself if it thinks by not registering UKA , then it prevents the different political parties that are legitimately registered from coming together with UKA as the Umbrella body and decide which candidtes to feild during elections.

Meanwhile , Zulu has stated that UKA hasn’t come into existence with the sole purpose of fielding former President His Excellency Dr. Edgar Lungu as Candidate for 2026 elections as is being alleged by a certain section of society.

He said the UPND administration was so terrified of ECL such that if he says anything at 10 in the morning, by 12 , the Chief government Spokesperson would hold a media briefing to attack what the former President says . He said the government was so terrified of President Lungu and that in such a way, he is the best person to provide checks and balances on behalf of the Zambian people.

Zulu said it is unfortunate that government’s only preoccupation is to kill the opposition in the nation so that they don’t have competition in 2026 but that the people of Zambia will not allow that to happen .

Truth vs. Deception, assessing the dishonest narrative of UPND Govt

By Misheck Kakonde

It is with grave concern that I address recent incidents of political misconduct and misrepresentation of facts within our esteemed institutions. The actions of certain individuals, particularly Minister Gary Nkombo in one of the newspapers’ statements and the Speaker of the National Assembly’s behavior, are both disappointing and unacceptable.

Minister Nkombo’s treatment of women, as exemplified by his disregard for a woman selling kachasu, is deeply troubling. No individual, regardless of their position, should engage in such behavior, especially when it involves denying rightful compensation for losses incurred by the mother who was selling Kachasu. Such actions only perpetuate inequality and injustice within our society.

Furthermore, the misuse of parliamentary privileges to silence dissenting voices, as seen in the suspension of Members of Parliament like JJ Banda emanating from his Facebook post, is a blatant abuse of power. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right, and it should never be curtailed under any circumstances, let alone through arbitrary and unjust measures. Moreover, all Zambians have a right to speak, and members of parliament enjoy parliamentary privileges while on the floor of the house.

Mr. Nkombo should not think Parliament is his house where he can tell a member of parliament Chisenga that she will go unpunished for calling the president a liar. It is imperative that Minister Nkombo, the Speaker, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, and all those in positions of authority understand that their actions have consequences. No one is above the law, and those who engage in lawlessness while holding power will inevitably face accountability. History has shown us time and again that justice prevails, and those who exploit their positions for personal gain will ultimately answer for their deeds.

Moreover, we cannot overlook the issue of factual misrepresentation, particularly by our president Mr. Hakainde Sammy Hichilema. The recent instance of the President misrepresenting information about the severity of droughts in different years is deeply concerning. The truth matters, especially when it comes to matters of public interest and policy decisions.

The evidence is evident, the drought of 1991 impacted a larger portion of the population compared to the recent drought in 2024. The President’s claim that 2024 experienced the most severe drought in a century is erroneous and deceptive. Such distortions only erode the public’s faith and trust in our leadership.

Furthermore, in 1991, Zambia’s population stood at 7,888,466, with 4 million individuals affected by the drought, constituting 50.75841962% of the population. In Zambia as per the recent census of 2023, we are 20,569,737, and 6,000,000 people are affected by the drought representing 29.1690652146%. The drought suggests a divine sign possibly disapproving of UPND’s governance, and these are dangers of poor planning and selling maize to other nations.

As responsible citizens, it is our duty to hold our leaders accountable for their actions and ensure that truth and integrity prevail in our governance. I call upon all stakeholders to uphold the principles of justice, transparency, and accountability in the service of our nation.

Republicans make final-ditch effort to get Biden to testify as impeachment probe comes to an end

0

The House impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden is almost finished. Republicans don’t really want to impeach him, but there’s still pressure to make a decision after working on it for months.

The leader of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, who is a Republican, Representative. James Comer made a final effort at Wednesday’s meeting, saying he will ask Biden to testify. He said the Democratic president was either involved or not very good at his job in his son’s business dealings. It’s very doubtful that Biden would go before the group.

“We want to hear from the president directly,” Comer said at the end of the long eight-hour meeting.

The White House told Republicans to stop and concentrate on important issues that Americans care about.

“Spokesman Ian Sams said this is a disappointing act after the impeachment has ended. ” “Let’s finish for the day, friend. ”

The long investigation by the Republican Party to impeach the president is almost over, but it hasn’t found any solid proof of his wrongdoing. Asking the president to give a statement could be the last thing to do. Comer is thinking about telling the Justice Department that Biden’s family may have broken the law, instead of starting the process to remove Biden from office. It probably won’t change much, but it would show that he is concerned.

The leading Democrat on the committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin from Maryland said that the Republicans have made the investigation into a joke, and that the mistakes in the Biden impeachment inquiry are coming to an end.

Republicans started looking into the president early last year when they gained control of the House. They wanted to make sure Biden met the requirements for impeachment. During his time as president, Democrats in charge of the House accused Donald Trump, a Republican, of doing something wrong and tried to remove him from office twice.

Trump and Biden will likely compete again in the November election. The investigation into Hunter Biden’s business deals and personal problems, especially before Joe Biden became president, is continuing.

The committee says that the Bidens used their family name to get favors from other people, and that Republicans are trying to prove it by pointing to a few phone calls or dinner meetings between Joe Biden, when he was vice president or not working, and his son Hunter and his business friends.

Hunter Biden, who is dealing with gun and tax problems, talked in private last month for a long time but didn’t give enough proof to show that the president should be impeached.

Hunter Biden said that his father has never been a part of his business.

It would be unusual but not unheard of for a president to speak to Congress. Abraham Lincoln talked to a group of people in the government about a speech that was made public, and Gerald Ford talked about his decision to forgive former president Richard M. Nixon, and some other people.

On Air Force One, as Biden traveled from Arizona to Texas, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “Republicans should stop this game and work with the president on important issues that affect the American people. ”

On Wednesday, the people who gave testimony were unusual and some had complicated backgrounds.

Jason Galanis is in a federal prison in Alabama for committing fraud and spoke to lawmakers through video. Tony Bobulinski, who used to work with Hunter Biden, talked about his issues with the family during the first debate between Trump and Biden in 2020.

The Democrats asked Lev Parnas to come and speak in court. They trust him even though he was found guilty. He was an important person in Trump’s first impeachment. He worked with Rudy Giuliani to find negative information about Joe Biden before the 2020 election. Parnas helped prove that the House GOP’s main accusation of bribery against the Bidens is not true.

In a video, Galanis told lawmakers that he thought he could make a lot of money with Hunter Biden and others by using the Biden family name for their business in other countries.

Galanis said that in May 2014, Hunter Biden had a short conversation with possible foreign business partners at a party in a New York restaurant. He put his dad on speakerphone to talk to a Russian billionaire and her husband.

However, Hunter Biden said he did not work with Galanis when he was asked about it. He said he only met Galanis for a short time a long time ago.

In the past, Galanis, who was punished for many fraud plans, admitted that he tried to get forgiven at the end of Trump’s time as president, but it didn’t work.

Bobulinski said he saw Joe Biden twice in 2017 in Los Angeles, with the help of Hunter Biden. They talked about their families for about 45 minutes, but didn’t talk about business.

Hunter Biden said his dad was not part of his business, but Bobulinski thinks Joe Biden was the main focus.

Parnas said he did not see any proof of the Biden family doing anything wrong while working overseas.

Before he was found guilty, Parnas was an important person in the first time Trump was accused of doing something wrong and not giving help to Ukraine.

Parnas said he helped Giuliani spread untrue claims about Biden to conservative media. Trump’s group said that Joe Biden, when he was vice president, got involved in firing a Ukrainian prosecutor to help Hunter Biden’s job on the board of a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma. Actually, the US and its allies also wanted the prosecutor to be fired because they thought he was corrupt.

Last year, House Republicans started looking into impeaching Biden. They used unproven statements from an FBI informant that were shared by Senate Republicans. These statements suggested that the Bidens might have received $10 million from Burisma. The person who used to give information to the FBI, Alexander Smirnov, was arrested last month and.

FIRE IG GRAPHEAL MUSAMBA, ARREST HIM FOR PRACTICING DISCRIMINATION AND HATE SPEECH-Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

PRESS STATEMENT

FIRE IG GRAPHEAL MUSAMBA, ARREST HIM FOR PRACTICING DISCRIMINATION AND HATE SPEECH-AMB. MWAMBA

●….While President Hichilema, in Opposition, accused the Patriotic Front of bias and practising tribalism against UPND members and certain regions, he has instead perpetrated the very tribal practice he condemned, with pathological vigour and wicked determination….

●…It is also saddening that institutions that should rescue this ugly, negative and divisive practice such as the Human Rights Commission(HRC), Office of the Public Protector and the Judiciary are eerily silent in clear conspiracy to the grave injustice being perpetrated against a group of people….

Lusaka-Thursday, 21st March 2023

Last year, on 18th July, 2023, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Graphael Musamba was extensively quoted in the media stating that the Patriotic Front government, recruited junkies as police officers.

He claimed that these police officers recruited were NOT loyal to the new Government and were allegedly indiscipline and committed robbery, theft and raped detainees.

He said this crop of police officers were employed under the Patriotic Front Government.

He has since repeated these assertions and he has now informed the nation that he would proceed to dismiss all those police officers employed under the Patriotic Front Government.

On Wednesday 20th March 2024, Police Spokesperson Ray Hamoonga repeated and justified the decision to fire those policemen employed by the Patriotic Front when he appeared on Radio Phoenix Breakfast Show.

He accused the police officers that they were not loyal to Musamba and the new government.

It is clear that the display of utter ignorance regarding civil service regulations and police recruitment guidelines by the Inspector General Graphael Musamba is shocking and is probably borne out of malicious intent.

It is clear that Musamba wishes to breach civil service regulations and he is determined to violate the Constitution by dismissing properly qualified and recruited police officers.

He is also purging the police service based on discrimination and victimization and not using the set civils service guidelines.

With all other crimes Musamba has been accused of perpetrating such as police brutality, torture, human rights abuses and denial of rights and freedoms of individuals and political parties, he is clearly NOT fit to be Inspector General of the Zambia Police.

Under normal circumstances and the Rule of Law, Musamba must be immediately be fired and arrested for engaging in hate speech, for practising discrimination and for violation of the law.

However, we as a Party recognise that this must be a difficult route to take by his well-pleased appointing authority.

President Hakainde Hichilema has continued to make similar decisions as Musamba, appointing and dismissing persons based on ethnic and party affiliations.

It therefore, follows that his appointed lieutenants at state-owned enterprises and law enforcement agencies are merely following his script of firing public service workers on the allegation that they belong to the Patriotic Front or to other tribes.

A UPND Presidential Campaign Team member, Bene Hachombwa also recently called for the dismissal of all those employed in the public service under the ten year rule of the Patriotic Front.

This criminal position appears to be the official stance but, unspoken and unwritten, policy of the UPND Government.

We must remember that over 400 senior civil servants have been removed from their positions and are currently parked at Public Service Management Division (PSMD) and Cabinet Office on similar allegations. Government claims that it’s only 49 senior civil servants affected in this manner.

The central allegation is that their loyalties were to the previous government or they were alleged members of the Patriotic Front.

This has been done to the detriment of, especially, highly specialised units such as the cancer diseases hospital, ZESCO and the Climate Change Office, where professionals trained at great cost to the country, are purged on the false allegations that they are Patriotic Front or hold names from unfavorable regions.

This is a very sad and difficult period for Zambians who dream of a united country under its cherished motto of One-Zambia One Nation.

While President Hichilema, in Opposition, accused the Patriotic Front of bias and practising tribalism against UPND members and certain regions, he has instead perpetrated the very tribal practice he condemned, with pathological vigour and wicked determination.

It is also saddening that institutions that should rescue this ugly, negative and divisive practice such as the Human Rights Commission(HRC), Office of the Public Protector and the Judiciary are eerily silent in clear conspiracy to the grave injustice being perpetrated against a group of people.

Further the Police has been quick to arrest those speaking and exposing the nepotism and tribalism under this government.

Speaking about this matter has become a crime in itself, a clear bid to silence the expose of these heinous crimes.

SELF-DECEPTION: HICHILEMA’S HIRED CROWDS- Fred M’membe

SELF-DECEPTION: HICHILEMA’S HIRED CROWDS

Today, Mr Hakainde Hichilema is expected in Kitwe to officiate at the handover ceremony of Mopani Copper Mines to its new Strategic Equity Partner – International Resources Holding (IRH).

But reality has dawned on the UPND government and party leadership that they’re seriously struggling with support. The ground has shifted, and they’re extremely unpopular on the Copperbelt. This has put immense pressure on both the provincial administration and party leadership. Because whilst they want to impress and show Mr Hichilema that all is well on the ground, that the people of the Copperbelt are with him, the opposite is what is unfortunately true. People don’t want him. People are tired of his endless lies and stories. This has created panic amongst the party functionaries.

As such the provincial administration and the party leadership stayed awake throughout the night today mobilising and dispatching buses across the province to ferry people that have been hired to show solidarity and support for Mr Hichilema during today’s visit to the Copperbelt.

But then, this is not the first time such a fruitless exercise is being undertaken. A few weeks ago, Mr Hichilema was in Chipata, Eastern province to officiate at the Youth Day celebrations, and the provincial administration and the UPND leadership once again ferried people across the province, with some coming as far as Southern Province and Lusaka, to go and drum up support for Mr Hichilema at the event.

It is quite shocking to see a leadership that is always ready and willing to go to any length to exaggerate and distort reality, all in an effort to create a totally false impression of themselves and their capabilities. A leadership that is so morally run-down that it does not mind misleading itself and its supporters by creating a non-existent reality, which they both end up accepting as true, and eventually celebrate it with songs of praise and dances.

It’s incredible how Mr Hichilema and his league regime have become victims of their own propaganda. They’re now believing their own lies. They’re lost and in confusion! With the 2026 general election fast approaching, we wait to see how they’ll manage to transport and pay people across the country because the truth is, they’re not wanted anywhere in the country. They’re extremely unpopular!

And for the people on the Copperbelt, let them not be deceived. Inkumba ni nkumba nangu isambe shani, teti ichinje! This administration has made known to the Zambian people that the poor masses of this country are not anywhere near the equation and, as such, deserve no place, value, or respect from them. Their actions and attitude towards the people on the Copperbelt are there for all to see. Like we have always said, Mr Hichilema and his friends are here to protect mining transnational capital and not the working masses.

Just look at what is happening at KCM in Chingola. After all those speeches, songs of praise, and dances, is Chingola back on its feet? Are miners and suppliers well taken care of by KCM? Nothing! Yet this government wants to go on lying and make people believe that they’re committed to uplifting the living standards of the people on the Copperbelt.

Mr Hichilema and his administration are all about greed and wealth accumulation. But all this won’t end well. It shall soon catch up with them because Zambians are not fools. Already, the atmosphere is that of exhaustion. People are fatigued of his lies, inconsistency, and self-serving attitude. Let him know that this country is way too big than him, and so he must stop playing with people’s livelihoods and the country’s future.

UPND CADRES ATTACK B FLOW AND FRIEND AT LEVY JUNCTION

UPND CADRES ATTACK B FLOW AND FRIEND AT LEVY JUNCTION
================================
Lusaka Central Police this afternoon(yesterday)recorded our statement regarding the harassment we faced at Levy Junction at the hands of a group of men who identified themselves as UPND members.

Yesterday 19th March, 2024 at 12:50, my friend and I came out of a shop at Levy Mall where we had gone to get a quotation for studio equipment. Upon entering our vehicle at 12:53, two men came to knock at the car window while I was talking on the phone. I signaled that I was on the phone when they started saying “We need to be beating these people.” One of them went on to say “Olo kuvipaya chabe, vilibe na nchito vibantu ivi” (or just killing them as these peope serve no purpose). The two were then joined by another guy. The one who had knocked at the window came back and said in a strong voice “Iwe B’Flow, choka mumotoka, tifuna kukamba naiwe” (B’Flow, come out of the car, we want to speak to you). My friend, knowing I was on a business call, opened his door and stepped outside to find out if anything was the matter. After describing the Levy Mall parking lot which is adjacent to Stay Easy Hotel as their ‘barrack’ and a “no go area” for activists like B’Flow, the group told my friend “You are very stupid, and you are not the one we want to talk to. We want your stupid friend B Flow.”

I decided to hang up the phone in order to check why there was what appeared to be a confrontation outside the car. Upon stepping out, I just saw one of them punching my friend in the face when the other two joined and took turns. Then another group of about 8 or 10 guys came running from the Government Printers side of the car park to confront me and my friend. One of them pushed me and grabbed me by the hand, then I requested him to let go of me while the others were dragging and beating my friend.

I started walking towards the side where they were beating my friend while a few members of the said group were trying to block me. I took out my phone to film the whole ordeal for evidence, then one guy came from behind and grabbed my phone. He said he was getting my phone and would not allow me to film what was happening there. At this point, a huge crowd of people came to watch as I kept following the person who had snatched my phone. Some onlookers and shoppers started filming everything on their phones.

After catching my friend who had tried to escape their beatings to seek refuge in one of the shops, the UPND cadres detained us for 2 hours and ‘lectured’ us while holding on to my phone up to around 15hrs. During the detention, I asked them what wrong my friend and I had done and one of them said that though he couldn’t remember what I post on Facebook, their concern is that their party is giving us too much freedom to express ourselves on social media. He also said from now onwards, my Facebook posts should always be about the positives of the current government because their wounds are still fresh. One of them said “Whether you like it or not, we are in charge. Gone are the days when we used to get beaten by PF, we are now the ones to do the beating”.

During the time they kept us in confinement they pointed out the following;

(1) According to them, B Flow’s Facebook posts about governance do not sit well with UPND members because B Flow is an influential person whose followers tend to believe whatever he says.

(2) B Flow should stop talking about national issues because if UPND loses power, UPND supporters will suffer again like the way they suffered at the hands of PF.

(3) From now onwards, B Flow should be consulting members of the UPND ‘barrack’ at Levy Mall or any other UPND ‘barracks’ on what to post on Facebook, and it should be about appreciating President HH for the good things he is doing for the nation such as free education. To this request, I responded by saying “I am an independent thinker and you will not think on my behalf”.

(4) One of them said our country needs to become like Dubai where according to him, phones automatically delete negative social media posts.

The last part of their 2-hour ‘lecture’ was a detailed list of examples of UPND members who died or got brutalized before the 2021 elections. They said this is the best government ever and that activists who oppose it will face their wrath. My friend who got assaulted by them responded saying “We understand that you would want B Flow and everyone else to be praising the government all the time, but you should leave room for some checks and balances because criticism can make the government do even more”. They responded to him saying it is too early to criticize this government because the PF had been given a lot of time before activists began to talk. They handed me back my phone a few minutes after 15hrs.

I reported the matter to Lusaka Central Police last evening. Today, I went back to the police with my friend who sustained a swollen eye and a headache, and the matter was recorded.

Tomorrow, I will go live on my page to give a detailed outline. Thank you for reading.

Esther Lungu will today reveal how she acquired pricy flats

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Court has declined to stay Esther Lungu’s forfeiture case and allow her to challenge one of its rulings.

The Court says Esther’s application is devoid of merit as the there are no extenuating circumstances warranting it to suspend today’s proceedings.

In this case, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to forfeit Esther’s 15 semi-luxurious houses State lodge area worth K41.5 million on reasons that they were acquired using illegal means.

Esther wanted to challenge the Court’s decision to throw out her application to have the case referred to the Constitutional Court for a determination on whether the Chief Justice has power to constitute the EFCC, through a statutory instrument as a division of the High Court.

Esther argued that the jury erred when it ruled that the specialized Court enacted by the Chief Justice is a division of the High Court.

In opposing an application by former First Lady Esther Lungu to have her forfeiture case suspended pending appeal, Drug Enforcement Commission senior investigations officer Emmanuel Khondowe charged that constitutional rights to property does not extend to illegal wealth.

Khondowe said non-conviction based forfeiture does not require criminal proceedings or a conviction.

He said the halting of proceedings pending appeal is not a right but the same is exercised at the discretion of the Court.

Ruling on the application judges Pixie Yangailo, Mwanajiti Mabbolobbolo and Vincent Siloka said Esther made the application late on December 11, 2023 two months after they had already delivered ruling.

The jury said the appeal has failed to pass an arguable test.

“We are not persuaded, that the appeal will be rendered nugatory by the mere fact that the proceedings herein will proceed and a judgement on merit given. We say so because a judgement given is capable of being stayed,” the Court indicated.

“We therefore do not agree with the interested party’s assertion that proceeding herein will prejudice the interested party, as the Court might consider what the interested party considers to be erroneous conclusions in its judgement.”

The judges said a party who is keen on obstructing a matter from proceeding, would simply choose multiple appeals against interlocutory rulings by the trial court and then seek stay of proceedings in the trial court.

“An applicant must demonstrate that there are exceptional circumstances, which make the stay of proceedings justified as opposed to having the case concluded and arising grievances taken up on a single appeal. We opine that the interested party has not met this high threshold in this case,” said the Court.

It dismissed the application and condemned Esther to costs, which will be taxed in default of agreement.

The Court has also summoned two bank officials, Brian Muleya Mutakwa who is the branch manager of ZANACO, Cairo branch and Choolwe Chiyala a relationship manager of First National Bank Zambia Plc to produce Esther’s bank statements and including those of the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust.

The former First Lady will have her day in Court today at 09:00hours and explain how she acquired the 15 flats which the DEC suspects to be disproportionate to her income

When bitterness and pathological hatred drives you to call for sanctions!

0

When we learnt that some senior citizens in Lusaka, retired Arch Bishop Telesphore Mpundu and one Brebner Changala to be specific, in their capacity as Our Civic Duty Association (OCIDA) had written the US Embassy suggesting that sanctions must be imposed on President Hichilema and some of his government officials, we were left flummoxed and speechless! We remained scratching our heads during the most part of day trying to figure-out what we had missed during our excursion from civilization tending to our goats in the village, to be greeted by calls of such drastic measures on our return.

As Mpundu was jumping onto a Washington bound to escalate their petition with US officials…….well according to Social media; back home, the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) chairman, eminent lawyer, Sakwiba Sikota, who we believe still has some unfinished business to settle with Hichilema for outclassing him for the UPND top position, was informing the media that they intend to submit a supplementary petition to the US government to reinforce the need for targeted sanctions against Hichilema and other top government officials for alleged human rights violations.

We rather got even more confused when some members of OCIDA distanced themselves from the letter written to the United States embassy in Zambia.

“Just like the decision to write to the US embassy, most of the statements have been issued by the OCIDA Chairperson without consulting other members,” revealed the OCIDA Trustee, Leslie Mbula, in a statement. “We therefore disown it and ask those associated with it to resign from the association on moral grounds.”

Where does this leave Mpundu and his friend, Changala? They’ve actually been exposed that they are part of the cartel which is motivated by sheer bitterness and pathological hatred for an individual, hence see nothing resorting to such acts of extreme unpatriotism.

The problem with those folks in Lusaka is that they tend to think our capital is Zambia and vice versa; whatever they say must be taken as the golden truth. However, those of us domiciled in other precincts across the country will tell you that after 7 years of anguish and misery, we’re finally enjoying a whiff of fresh air, some economic challenges notwithstanding. Violent party cadres that used to terrorise our citizens in the markets and bus stations have since been flashed a red card; every Jim and Jack can now go live on air and blatantly criticise the government, if they want to, without any risk of violent party cadres, some of them now serving as MPs, descending on them and beating them to pulp or indeed emptying the contents of theirs bowels into the mouths of helpless journalists; constituency development fund is being dispersed to every corner of the nation in equal measures in good time – ask Sunday Chanda; civil service jobs are being handed-out to citizens without discrimination; the opposition is allowed ample space to mobilise without any encumbrances – the list is of course, endless!

Now, where’s this hullabaloo about imposing sanctions emanating from? What sort of gross human rights violations has Hichilema’s administration committed to deserve sanctions as compared to the previous absolutely corrupt and brutal Patriotic Front regime?

Curiously, some opposition leaders have always taken pleasure in mocking and taunting Hichilema as a puppet of the West; in their warped thinking, a collection of Caucasians huddled in air-conditioned offices in Washington, London and Paris simply have to pull some strings and our president obliges without any qualms! Those who personally know HH will tell you the man is not a pushover. During his boardroom days, he’d authoritatively present his case and maintain his ground until he got what he wanted. True to this strong trait in him, Hichilema along with Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and William Samoei Ruto of Kenya recently issued a joint statement in the influential Economist Magazine, on the need to reform the global financial systems that must treat Africa fairly.

“Firstly, African leaders must be bold in promoting their ideas and participating when decisions are being made that affect the continent. The three of us have made it clear that we will not sign on to global regulations and agreements that are not shaped with our input,” part of the statement reads.

And during his state visit to Botswana early this year, Hichilema encouraged that country not to accept unfair trade conditions especially those that undermine and substitute decision making by African mineral producing countries.

Do you still want to insist Hichilema is a puppet of the West when he’s simply trying his level best to do business with everyone to extricate us from our current economic quagmire?

Well, unlike our colleagues in the East, one decent thing about the West even if they may have their own weaknesses, since we are all fallible, is that they won’t easily “bankroll” you before you satisfy certain benchmarks or conditionalities – how is your government dealing with corruption? Are fundamental human rights being upheld? Is there ample room for the proliferation of democracy in the nation? It’s totally unwise for anyone to expect Western embassies to rely on their twisted reports when they have their own ‘spooks’ lurking in their embassy buildings that actively monitor the prevailing conditions in the nation.

And just in case our friends have missed it, the United States government, through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has announced $367 million (9.2 billion Kwacha) of new support toward Zambia’s national HIV response over the next year. In addition to this, Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane has also revealed that the World Bank will provide 100 million dollars under the National Energy Advancement and Transformation- NEAT- programme aimed at improving the operations of the power utility company ZESCO whereas the Irish government has committed 300, 000 Euros towards the efforts to address the devastating challenges arising from the drought situations.

If indeed dictatorship is looming and blossoming in our beloved nation, how come the West is still ‘raining’ funds on us and still considering more funding to come out way, including debt restructuring by the International Monetary Fund?

THE SAD REALITY OF ZAMBIAN POLITICS: A NATION OF HUNGRY INTELLIGENT ILLITERATES

THE SAD REALITY OF ZAMBIAN POLITICS: A NATION OF HUNGRY INTELLIGENT ILLITERATES

20th March 2024

In Zambia, everyone celebrates 24th October as our Independence Day. Ironically, very few are ready and prepared to live, act and speak as free citizens of a democratic nation. So many have become prisoners of their own consciousness for choosing what’s convenient over what’s right for the nation.

Today, everyone knows what’s wrong, but they are scared to point out those wrongs. We have become an expert nation of gossipers, backbiters and pretenders. Even those who are walking in the corridors of power, they know what’s going on wrong, but instead of giving the correct counsel and advice, they would rather give a fake smile and a nod of approval to their appointing authority as a form of survival instinct.

Those in the corporate world, they betray their own consciousness and choose to pay a blind eye to all the wrongs so they can remain relevant to the Government of the day, including senselessly employing unqualified caders as long they are recommended by someone who is considered politically correct; someone who can speak for them and keep them in that position – what a senseless nation of intelligent illiterates!

If you were to talk about those doing business and looking for GRZ and parastatal contracts, they are willing to kill, to give kick backs and say all manner of bad and nasty things against their perceived competitors just so that they can emerge favourites to be awarded hefty contracts. One wonders how people sleep and find justification for the sudden accumulation of wealth which has only become possible through political connections and not hard work.

Genuine Zambian patriots who believe in the land of works and joy in unity, are left as bystanders. There is a deliberate wave of intentional exclusion if you are not considered politically correct. Citizens are being excluded from available opportunities within their own “independent” country. Think about this, who will be wasting their time to go and vote if citizens realize that their vote is only good for empowering someone to vilify, undermine and exclude them from participating national affairs?

After we fought for independence from white colonial masters and domination, sadly, a new form of colonialism emerged. You must belong to the ruling party of big boys for you to get favours and business deals. As you do, make sure whatever is wrong that you see, spin it and find something positive to say about it. That way, your relevance becomes noticeable and rewarded secretly. We are not surprised to see those who are pretending to be clever than a collective intelligence of citizens.

Even those who once served in past governments have not been spared from the effects of this ugly phenomenon of destructive politics. As high profile figures, citizens would listen to them when they speak out. But they have been told, what’s your voice without money, opportunities and government support? So in order for their children and grand children to remain employed in the civil service, they must never criticise the government, rather, they should be in the forefront to praise however things may be wrong.

This sad reality of a politically induced parasitic mindset is spreading at such a fast rate that not even Churches or NGOs have been spared. As a Pastor, Bishop, Apostle, if you need an envelope or support to build your Church, just be in good books with those in power and if you see anything wrong, forget about your prophetic mandate. I’m not saying this is happening in every Church, but certainly in some.

Just pretend as if you are not seeing anything wrong happening. Incidental to this, if as a Pastor you want to attract membership that belong to the ruling elite with hefty tithes and offerings, don’t say anything wrong about what’s happening in Government because if you do, you will send away high value Church members.

It’s so sad how the focus of Churches has been reduced to numbers and not salvation. The more numbers you attract, the more tithe and offering and the more comfortable the life of the set man.

Sadly, the net effect of a compromised Church is a dysfunctional society that loves money above relationship, money above truth, money above morality, a society that perpetuates hate against each other and celebrates wrong over right!

It’s not surprising that the pursuit for money and wealth through political connections and appointments has handed us a rotten judiciary, rotten legislature, and highly toxic executive.

Institutions of governance have become blind to justice and patriotism at the altar of political rewards. The cycle continues and more political parties are being registered because everyone now knows if you want to get rich fast and wield immense power to hypnotize everyone to start hero worshipping you, just become a politician!

Citizens must introspect and decide if this is the kind of independence and self-rule that our forefathers envisioned when they said stand and sing of Zambia, proud and free. Every citizen must search their hearts and their conscious if what they are perpetuating is right for our children and the generations after them.

We must arrest the political animal we are creating and return our nation to sanity before it’s too late!

HH Congratulates Vaughan Gething on Becoming First Minister of Wales

0

Zambia extends heartfelt congratulations to Vaughan Gething on his election as the First Minister of Wales, marking a historic milestone as the first Black leader of a government in the United Kingdom.

President Hakainde Hichilema congratulated the new First Minister of Wales, born in Zambia, Vaughan Gething, on his election to the highest office in his country.
“We look forward to enhancing bilateral relations between Zambia and the UK. Longyfarchiadau ar eich swydd newydd, da iawn. (Congratulations on the new job),” President Hichilema said.

Gething’s election as the government leader follows his recent victory in the contest to lead Wales’ governing Labour Party. His ascent to the highest office in Wales was sealed with 27 votes out of 51 in the legislature, the Senedd, where Labour holds the majority.

Wales, with a population of approximately 3 million, constitutes one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom, alongside England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. While the British government in London oversees defense and foreign affairs, regional administrations in Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Belfast govern areas such as education and health.

Gething’s political journey has been notable, having served as Wales’ health minister during the pandemic and subsequently as economy minister, grappling with significant challenges such as Tata Steel’s plans to close blast furnaces at its Port Talbot plant.

Assuming leadership amidst turbulent times, Gething inherits a government often at odds with the Conservative administration in London. His leadership will navigate issues ranging from economic recovery to environmental protests, reflecting the diverse array of challenges facing Wales.

Gething’s historic achievement resonates deeply with his personal journey, born in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, in 1974. His family’s relocation to Wales saw him grow up in Dorset before returning to Wales as a student at Aberystwyth University. Despite facing challenges, including political divisions, during his university years, Gething’s amiable nature and resilience left a lasting impression on his peers.

His election as Welsh Labour leader underscores his dedication to public service and marks a significant moment in Wales’ political landscape. Zambia celebrates Gething’s achievement as a testament to the values of diversity, inclusion, and leadership, wishing him success in his new role as First Minister of Wales.

Robinho to serve a nine-year prison sentence in his homeland after being convicted of gang rape in Italy

0

Former Brazil and Manchester City winger, Robinho will reportedly serve a nine-year jail sentence for gang rape in his home country after he was found guilty in Italy in 2017.

According to Globo, Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (BSCJ) reached the landmark judgement on Wednesday, March 20, after Italian authorities had asked to extradite the 40-year-old in 2022.

The former Premier League player, who’s real name is Robson De Souza, was one of six men who were found guilty of assaulting an Albanian woman in an Italian nightclub in January 2013.

Former Brazil and Man City star, Robinho to serve a nine-year prison sentence in his homeland after being convicted of gang rape in Italy

In January 2022, the Supreme Court in Rome dismissed his final appeal against the conviction.

Robinho claims he is innocent and has been living in Brazil for the past seven years.

It came after nine of the court’s 15 ministers had voted in favour of the decision to incarcerate the footballer in Brazil.

The outlet reports that his legal representatives will ‘appeal to the BSCJ and to the Federal Supreme Court.’

Globo also claims that the ex-footballer, who also spent time at AC Milan and Real Madrid, will now be arrested in Santos, where he currently resides.

The Brazilian constitution does normally not normally permit the extraditions of native criminals. He could have faced arrest if he had travelled outside of Brazil.

Robinho, who was 28 and was playing for AC Milan at the time, admitted during his appeal to having ‘contact’ with the woman, but the Brazilian insisted it was consensual.

The Milan Court of Appeals found Robinho had ‘belittled’ and ‘brutally humiliated’ the victim as it upheld his original sentence in December 2020.

Intercepted phone calls between the Brazilian and those allegedly involved in the assault were used as key evidence in his initial conviction.

Robinho had said: ‘It makes me laugh because I’m not interested, the woman was drunk, she doesn’t even know what happened.’

The winger came through the Santos academy where he was seen as one of Brazil’s rising stars.

He would go on to play 137 matches for Real Madrid, 53 for Man City and 144 for AC Milan during his playing career. He also made 100 appearances for the Brazil national side.

Woman strangles her 19-year-old daughter to death after finding her at home with boyfriend

0

A woman in Hyderabad, India, allegedly killed her 19-year-old daughter, Mote Bhargavi, after finding her at home with her boyfriend, police said on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The incident happened at their home in Ibrahimpatnam, Dandumailaram village on Monday.

The woman, Mote Jangamma, allegedly assaulted her daughter before strangling her with a saree.

She tried to pass off her daughter’s death as suicide, but injuries on the girl’s throat indicated that she was strangled to death.

Bhargavi was a student at a private college in Dilsukhnagar, Rachakonda police said.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Maheshwaram, Sunitha Reddy told TOI that a murder case has been registered and the investigation was underway.

“All angles are being probed, including the motive behind the murder,” she added.

On Monday morning, Bharagavi’s father Ailaiaih left for work while Jangamma and her 17-year-old son went to their field in the village, leaving Bhargavi alone at home.

Around 1pm, Jangamma returned home and found Bhargavi was talking to her boyfriend and became furious and started abusing her, police said.

Seeing her, the boy ran away and informed her brother. Her brother rushed home, but found the doors closed from the inside.

He peeped through the window and found that his mother was reportedly attempting to strangle Bhargavi with a scarf.

Then, he knocked hard on the door and Jangamma opened the door and came out crying saying that Bhargavi fell with a saree tied around her neck

The boy immediately informed his relatives, who rushed to the spot with a local doctor, who declared her dead.

On a complaint from the boy late on Monday, Ibrahimpatnam police registered a murder case and started an investigation.

Police said that Jangamma had been forcing Bhargavi to marry their close relative, but she refused the proposal and said that she would marry the boy with whom she was in a relationship, as he also belongs to their caste.

They have been fighting over this issue for quite some time, but on Monday when she saw Bhargavi with the boy, she became furious, picked up a fight and killed Bhargavi, police said.

They detained Jangamma and were questioning her.

Meanwhile, Ailaiah alleged that Bhargavi was found in an unconscious state when Jangamma came home on Monday and, after seeing her in that state, Jangamma also collapsed and became unconscious.

“Seeing my wife at home, the boy ran away and my daughter was found unconscious. He might have done something to my daughter,” he alleged.

He also denied opposing Bhargavi’s relationship with her boyfriend.

“Why will a mother kill her own daughter? We would have performed their marriage,” he told the media on Tuesday.

Grace Mugabe Intervenes in Land Dispute: Demands Restoration of Niece’s Cancelled Title Deeds

0

In a notable legal tussle over land rights in Zimbabwe, former First Lady Grace Mugabe has reportedly stepped into the fray, confronting Local Government Minister Winston Chitando. The bone of contention is the cancellation of title deeds for an 8003 square meter piece of land in the posh Carrick Creagh area of Borrowdale, Harare, originally purchased by her niece, Farai Mashonganyika, in 2011 for US$4,000.

Mashonganyika, who has previously served on the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, finds herself at the center of a contentious issue, asserting her right over land acquired at what now appears to be a fraction of its market value. The land, bought for approximately 49 cents per square meter, is dramatically lower than the current valuation pegged by the government at US$20,003.

The matter escalated to the High Court after the Ministry of Local Government, under Minister Chitando’s directive, cancelled the title deed, citing discrepancies in the purchase price and alleging fraudulent acquisition. In response, Mashonganyika, leveraging her familial ties, has roped in the influential former First Lady in a bid to restore her ownership rights.

Sources close to the situation revealed that Grace Mugabe made a direct call to Minister Chitando last Saturday, attempting to persuade him to retract his opposition to Mashonganyika’s legal challenge. This intervention by Mugabe underscores the complexity and high stakes involved in the dispute, highlighting the intricate blend of politics, land rights, and family connections.

Mashonganyika’s court application sheds light on her acquisition process, where she claims to have been misled by a property development company, which prompted additional payments beyond the initial purchase price. She asserts that her title deed, obtained after fulfilling her financial obligations, was unjustly cancelled, a move that she learned of only through public notices.

In his defense, Minister Chitando argues that the court cannot proceed without considering the testimony of the involved property developer, Arosume Property Development Pvt Ltd, which is crucial for validating Mashonganyika’s claims of financial compliance. The Minister’s affidavit emphasizes the necessity of acknowledging the tripartite agreement between the ministry, the developer, and the Sally Mugabe Housing Cooperative for a comprehensive evaluation of the case.

The legal battle has unveiled a tangled web of allegations, counter-allegations, and a quest for justice, as Mashonganyika strives to reclaim her land rights against a backdrop of regulatory scrutiny and accusations of favoritism. The involvement of Grace Mugabe adds a layer of political intrigue to the case, raising questions about the influence of high-profile individuals in legal and governmental processes.

As the High Court deliberates on this contentious issue, the outcome will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for land ownership disputes, government transparency, and the integrity of property acquisition processes in Zimbabwe. The case continues to unfold, with the Zimbabwean public keenly watching as these complex layers of law, politics, and family relations intersect in the High Court’s halls.

Michael Jackson’s son asks court to not let his grandmother Katherine, 93, spend estate funds

Michael Jackson’s son, Blanket ‘Bigi’ Jackson has filed legal papers seeking to block his grandmother Katherine from using estate funds in the ongoing legal battle with the estate executors.

Bigi Jackson, 22, formerly known as Blanket, filed paperwork with the court earlier this week, TMZ reported, citing court docs it reviewed.

It’s the latest development in a legal battle over the Beat It singer’s estate nearly 15 years after the June 25, 2009 death.

It was gathered that the Man in the Mirror singer’s survivors oppose efforts made by his estate executors to sell a large portion of the late artist’s catalogue.

Blanket and his grandmother were on the same page in stating their resistance to a potential sale, according to legal documents reviewed by TMZ, but Blanket was not involved with Katherine’s subsequent appeal of the court’s eventual ruling to let the executors proceed in exploring further options for a sale.

Attorneys for Blanket told the court that he feels the appeal will not be a successful one and doesn’t want to depreciate the value of the estate with expensive legal bills, the outlet reported.

Blanket’s legal team requested the court ‘use its best judgment’ in ruling for Katherine to be reimbursed for ‘reasonable attorney’s fees’ she racked prior to appealing the court’s ruling.

Attorneys for Blanket said in docs submitted to the court last June that Blanket had hoped to keep his position on the matter under wraps, encouraging the court to maintain confidentiality on certain aspects of the legal conflict.

Blanket ‘is a very private person and may have said nothing if he knew that his words or positions could become public,’ his lawyers said. ‘That, in turn, would have denied the trial court of the ability to hear and consider all aspects of the proposed action.’

In legal docs obtained by Dailymail.com earlier this month, the two executors of the estate, John Branca and John McClain, filed paperwork in Los Angeles Superior Court asking it to stop Katherine in her pursuit of $561,548 from them over a legal dispute tied to the late Thriller singer’s catalog.

Katherine, 93, filed court documents requesting the six-figure sum in a motion, as she said she spent the total on legal fees seeking to prevent Branca and McClain from selling her late son’s work.

Branca and McClain sought court approval in 2022 to sell Michael Jackson’s catalog, leading his mother to file documents objecting to the potential sale.

Katherine told the court in a hearing on the topic that her late son, who famously feuded with Paul McCartney in the mid-1980s over his purchase of publishing rights of a chunk of Beatles material, made clear he never wanted his catalog to be sold, as he felt it was his lifeline, Radar reported earlier this month.

Branca and McClain told the court that Katherine has an established track record of opposing business transactions that would be profitable for the estate; and said the timing was right to put Jackson’s work for sale, as it would command maximum value amid current market conditions.

Branca and McClain told the court that Jackson’s estate badly needed the cash infusion, as it ‘was teetering on the verge of collapse,’ Radar reported after reviewing legal docs.

The estate, according to the executors, had ‘more than $400 million in debt that encumbered Michael’s most significant assets and little or no liquidity or means to service that debt.

‘Through creative thinking, hard work and business savvy – and, of course, Michael’s extraordinary creative legacy – the Executors transformed the MJJ Business into a profitable enterprise.’

The judge in the case eventually granted Branca and McClain permission to pursue a sale of the catalog, which Katherine filed an appeal against, saying the executors were overreaching in their authority, Radar reported.

Branca and McClain filed papers in response objecting to Katherine’s appeal, citing their rights as executors. The court has yet to issue a judgment on the appeal.

Last month the estate announced a partial sale, as Sony purchased the rights to half of Jackson’s material for $600 million amid Katherine’s objections.

Michael’s eldest son Prince, 27, said through his legal team that he preferred to keep his position on the situation private.

Spanish FA HQ and Luis Rubiales’ house raided by police

0

Police on Wednesday, March 20, searched the Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) headquarters and an apartment belonging to its former head Luis Rubiales in a corruption probe over a multimillion-euro deal to relocate the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.

Spanish FA HQ and Luis Rubiales

A Spanish court has been investigating since June 2022 whether Rubiales committed a crime of improper management when the RFEF agreed with former FC Barcelona player Gerard Pique’s Kosmos firm to move the tournament, a judicial source said.

Rubiales did not immediately reply to a Reuters’ request for comment but he has previously denied wrongdoing.

Rubiales angered Spanish soccer traditionalists by expanding the contest between the league champions and Copa del Rey winners to a four-team format, shifting the event from August to January, and hosting it outside Spain.

The RFEF in 2019 agreed a three-year deal worth a reported 120 million euros ($131 million) with the Saudi sports authority to stage the competition in Saudi Arabia.

Spanish FA HQ and Luis Rubiales

Judge Delia Rodrigo Diaz ordered the new searches of the RFEF’s Madrid base and Rubiales’ Granada apartment as part of her investigation, the source told Reuters.

The national prosecutor’s office said the probe was looking for corruption in business, improper management of assets and money laundering, Police carried out a total of 11 searches at unspecified locations across Spain related to the case, and the prosecutor’s office said it expected seven people to be arrested.

A source at the RFEF told Reuters that Rubiales’ home had also been searched. Images showed Civil Guard officers emerging from the Granada city centre apartment with a cardboard box labelled “Luis Rubiales” along with several other bags. The investigation adds to Rubiales’ legal woes after he was accused of sexual assault and coercion over his unsolicited kiss on the mouth of player Jenni Hermoso during celebrations after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory last year.

Both Hermoso and Rubiales, along with colleagues, have given testimony to the investigating judge, who has recommended the case proceed to trial.

‘We still gonna get that money back’, Kanye West says of the $8B he claims he lost from Adidas

0

In 2022, Adidas severed ties with Kanye West, now known as Ye, for making a series of antisemitic comments. He tweeted to say he was “going death con 3 ON JEWISH PEOPLE”, before saying he was not “Anti-Semitic because black people are actually Jew also”.

The suspension of the deal resulted in Adidas ending the production of Yeezy-branded products. Adidas also stopped all payments to West and his companies with “immediate effect” following his comment.

“Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,” Adidas said in a statement. “Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect, and fairness.”

According to Forbes, West’s deal with Adidas accounts for $1.5 billion of his net worth. “With that gone, Ye is no longer a billionaire,” Forbes said in 2022. “It caps a stunning, self-induced downfall for one of the brashest and most volatile personalities to have graced Forbes’ pages.”

The magazine further estimated West’s net worth to be around $400 million, down from nearly $2 billion. “Losing Adidas was the final nail in Ye’s net-worth coffin”, said Forbes, adding, “Now the road has ended.”

What remains of the rapper’s financial empire is his “real estate, cash, his music catalogue, and a 5% stake in ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s shapewear firm, Skims.”

Aside from Adidas, other brands severed ties with West. Balenciaga announced that it was ending its relationship with the rapper in the wake of his anti-Semitic remarks and “White Lives Matter” shirt. Production company MRC and Creative Artists Agency also cut ties with him. Also, Gap announced that it was removing Yeezy products from shelves and production and closing the rapper’s Yeezy Gap online store.

Almost two years after Adidas severed ties with him, West revealed in a recent interview how devastating the move was to his fortune. According to the Chicago native, he lost some $8 billion following the cancellation of his partnership deal with Adidas, but he is optimistic about recouping his losses after deciding to sell his own merchandise on Yeezy.com for $20 a piece.

“I can stand up proudly and say, you know what, I lost $8 billion… We still gonna get that money back and still be in a better position than Adidas someday,” West said during an interview on BigBoyTV.

Indeed, West is on course to recoup his losses. He recently generated millions of dollars in product sales in one day following his Super Bowl LVII ad to promote Yeezy products.

“I said boom, we’re going to do this for $20, then we did the Super Bowl and the fact that I was able to show factual $19.3 million of sales in one day,” West explained on BigBoyTV. “The next day was $15 million. The next day was $11 million, but in one day at the same time as the music was coming out. At the end of the day, this was just us and the people.”

‘I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time’ – Meagan Good on her relationship with Jonathan Majors

0

During a red carpet interview with PEOPLE at the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, Meagan Good touched on her relationship with Jonathan Majors, saying that she’s currently in a better place.

Saturday was the first time the couple appeared at a prominent awards show after Majors, 34, was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Majors’ December 2023 conviction traces back to a March 2023 incident in downtown Manhattan involving a heated argument with Jabbari.

Despite her current beau’s legal woes, Good, 42, confirmed they’re in a good space and also provided an update on her personal life.

“I’m in love, I’m transitioning, I’m healing, I’m growing [and] I’m getting excited about what’s next,” the Think Like a Man star said. “Yeah, just a lot of things at once. But what I can say is, I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time.”

Good currently stars in the Amazon Prime comedy series, Harlem. The actress cited the show as one of those positives and expressed her pleasure with being a part of it.

“It is like a crazy time in general,” she stated. “I just have peace in my heart and I have joy in my heart, and I love myself and the skin that I’m in and the season that I’m in and the growth that’s happening.”

The 42-year-old also spoke about her mental health and how she takes care of herself despite the talks about their relationship because of Majors’ current situation.

“I keep my eyes on God, you know, that’s the focus,” the Shazam! Fury of the Gods actress said. “And I stay true to myself and I stay authentic. I know what I know that I know. And in time, everything else just catches up with what you know, if you’re true to yourself and you’re authentic.”

She added: “There’s some things you just gotta be like, ‘I ain’t got time for that. Let me go see what my nephew’s doing. Let me see what my mama’s doing. Let me go see what my man’s doing. Let me go get this job,’ ”

Elsewhere in the interview, Good, who was previously married to producer and author DeVon Franklin, spoke about how Majors’ three dogs treat her.

“They love me,” she told PEOPLE. “They protect me. They’re so gentle and wonderful and emotional and it blows my mind because I was not a dog person. I like dogs, but I didn’t want one. Now, I have three.”

Although Majors faces a misdemeanor charge and a potential one-year jail term, the repercussions of his guilty verdict have already impacted him beyond the courtroom. The guilty verdict resulted in his removal from his Marvel role as Kang the Conqueror.

Meet the 21-Year Old Black Genius Who Created Key Algorithms Used by Uber, Instagram, and Snapchat

Iddris Sandu is only 21-years old, but he has quite a few major accomplishments in the field of technology. He has created his own software development firm, developed key algorithms for tech giants Instagram, Snapchat, and Uber, worked with the likes of Kanye West and Jaden Smith, and has even been recognized by former U.S. President Barack Obama!

A very early start

Born in Accra, Ghana, Iddris’ parents migrated to the United States when he was 3. He started learning how to do programming on his own at the age of 10. At age 13, he got his first working experience at Google where he worked on many programming projects.

Within his two years at Google, Iddris designed an app for his classmates to help them navigate their classrooms easily. He was just 15 years old at that time! His app, which was used by his high school in California, has earned him a meeting with then-President Obama at the White House where he received the Presidential Scholar Award.

However, Iddris decided not to go to college. His reason, besides not being able to afford it, is that he didn’t want to “wait four years; I wanted to make an impact now,” he told CNN. And that’s exactly what he did.

After first developing key algorithms for Instagram and Snapchat, Iddris was 18-years old when he started working for Uber, where he created the software called Autonomous Collision Detection Interface to detect driver’s hand motions and positions for their self-driving cars.

Tech meets hip-hop

Last year, Iddris met rapper Nipsey Hussle at a local Starbucks and they immediately turned the chance encounter into a collaboration. In just three weeks, the pair transformed an abandoned storefront in Los Angeles into The Marathon Store which sells clothing, accessories, and music. Through its companion app, referred to as the “smart store,” customers can also download exclusive music and digital content.

The store, which highlighted Iddris’ tech excellence and Nipsey’s cultural influence, has caught the attention of several celebrities and icons such as Russell Westbrook, Vegas Jones of Roc Nation, Diddy, Jay-Z, among others.

Most recently, Iddris has partnered with Kanye West and Jaden Smith to create augmented-reality experiences involving music, clothing lines, disaster relief projects, and others for the tech festival ComplexCon next year in Chicago.

Going back to his roots

Definitely, a bright future awaits Iddris and he wants to share it to others as well. Next year, he is set to visit Lagos, Nigeria to host student workshops where he wants to teach African kids to build platforms as he himself believes in the Black excellence.

“The next tech leaders are going to come from Africa. Why? Because they are exposed to problems which they have the solutions to,” he said.

Solar eclipse: World to experience total darkness from April 8 to 10, 2024

0

The world is gearing up for an extraordinary event—the total solar eclipse (darkness) set to take place from April 8 to 10, 2024. Many anticipate that this cosmic phenomenon will herald the arrival of a Golden Age.

What is a total solar eclipse?

It occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, obscuring the sun’s light. According to NASA, these events happen approximately once every 18 months somewhere in the world. However, this upcoming eclipse is particularly noteworthy.

During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun, plunging parts of the Earth into darkness.

Total solar eclipse (Darkness) from April 8 to 10, 2024 to be experienced

This rare celestial occurrence, known as the Great American Eclipse, is slated to take place from April 8, 2024.

In some regions, there are expectations of experiencing three days of darkness as the Earth traverses the Phonton Belt. Throughout this period, the planet will receive both sunlight and moonlight.

Photons, electromagnetic particles that travel at the speed of light, play a crucial role in this phenomenon. They obstruct the sun’s rays, preventing sunlight, moonlight, and starlight from reaching the Earth’s surface.

The total solar eclipse, dubbed the Great American Eclipse, is anticipated to last for three days, although some sources suggest it could extend up to five days.

During this period, the Earth will be shrouded in darkness for a duration of 72 hours or more, resembling an extended nighttime.

Individuals residing in areas where the Great American Eclipse will occur have been advised to prepare by stocking up on essential supplies such as food, candles, and water, and minimizing travel.

Those reliant on solar energy will face limitations in generating power during the eclipse, which commences on April 8th.

As per updates from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the total solar eclipse is scheduled to take place on April 8th, primarily affecting parts of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Within the US, 14 states are set to experience a total solar eclipse, with residents in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine advised to prepare accordingly for this extraordinary event.

5 reasons why the 2024 total solar eclipse could be the best eclipse for hundreds of years

The total solar eclipses from April 8th to 10th, 2024, will mark the longest U.S. total solar eclipse since 1806, promising an awe-inspiring spectacle.

This event coincides with the solar maximum, ensuring a breathtaking display.

Anticipated to be the darkest U.S. total solar eclipse in 217 years, it may also offer the rare chance to witness a comet during totality.

With an estimated audience of at least 40 million viewers, it is poised to become the most-watched total solar eclipse in North American history.

What time will the total solar eclipse (darkness) be experienced on April 8?

NASA has announced that on April 8th, the South Pacific Ocean will be the point of start, while in North America, a total eclipse will be experienced on Mexico’s Pacific Coast around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

However, your location will depend on the time you experience a total eclipse of the sun.

Per the NASA update, these are the times they will experience total darkness.

Dallas at 1:40 p.m. CDT.

Little Rock at 1:51 p.m. CDT.

Carbondale, Kentucky – 1:59 p.m. CDT.

Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. EDT.

Buffalo, New York, at 3:18 p.m. EDT.

Caribou, Maine, at 3:32 p.m. EDT.

What you need to do to watch the April 8th total solar eclipse safely

Children and adults need special sunglasses made with solar filters. These glasses are also known as eclipse glasses or solar glasses.

How to view the eclipse safely

Once the sun’s rays reach the earth, you are not to use your naked eye to see since that can damage your eyes. You must therefore put on your sunglasses if you are to safely view the partial eclipse until the total eclipse.

Once there are full solar eclipses, you can remove your sunglasses and view the heavenly occurance with your eyes.

Your solar glasses must be put on again once the full solar eclipse changes to a partial eclipse.

If your country is not in the path of totality, you are likely to experience a partial eclipse.

There are several expected ecological reactions, and interesting things to watch out for are how animals of all kinds, including insects, react to the changes. Again, watch out for the cocks as the crowl thinking it’s night or dawn as the full eclipse occurs.

Look out for the street lights that will come alive once the total eclipse occurs.

After the Great American Eclipse in April, the next one will take place in August 2044 in the US.

Sepp Blatter reveals he experienced of angels coming for him while in an induced coma after undergoing heart surgery

Former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter has opened up on an experience he had after being put in an induced coma following heart surgery that saw him miss the first day of his 2022 fraud trial.

Blatter served as president of football’s global governing body from 1998 to 2015 when he was ejected from office by FIFA’s ethics committee after criminal proceedings were opened against him by the Swiss Attorney General’s Office.

He was forced to stand down in 2015 and was banned by FIFA for eight years, later reduced to six, over ethics breaches for authorising payment of 2 million Swiss Francs (approx £1.8m) to then-UEFA President Michel Platini, allegedly made in his own interests rather than FIFA’s.

Both Blatter, now 88 and Platini would be found not guilty of fraud in July 2022, although the saga continues into a ninth year after their acquittals were appealed.

The trial saw Blatter miss the first day, complaining of chest pains after undergoing heart surgery 18 months earlier, and in an interview with the Telegraph, he has opened up on the near-death experience he had while in a coma.

‘I had hallucinations,’ he said. ‘I have seen that angels were coming for me and wanted to take me off. And I have said, “No, I’m not ready to go”.

‘I was in a coma, I was out, and there are two lovely white-dressed ladies that were looking after me and I had some apparatus to breathe. And then they had to change it.

‘But, in my dream – or, at that time, my reality – it was that there were angels. They said, “You have to come. You have to die now. They are awaiting you in heaven”. I took more than three months afterwards just to realise that I’m still alive.’

After emerging from the induced coma, he was unable to speak French, English or Spanish, only the dialectal language from his birth-place of Valais in Switzerland.

Blatter also revealed that he had been born prematurely, telling the Telegraph he had weighed just 1.25kg at birth.

The 88-year-old had also suffered a brush with mortality in the months immediately following the start of the investigation into his payment to Platini, as he collapsed on visiting the graves of his parents.

‘I was among the angels singing and the devil with the fire. But it was the angels who sang,’ he told Swiss channel RTS.

In the wide-ranging interview, Blatter also suggested that the World Cup would likely never return to England in his lifetime, claiming the English game is ‘too successful’.

He said: ‘I would say, in my life, I will not witness it! The problem is that English football is too successful.’

Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife donates $640 million to 361 nonprofits

0

Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is donating $640 million to 361 nonprofits, her organization, Yield Giving and Lever for Change announced Tuesday, March 19 after an open call for applicants.

More than 6,000 nonprofit organizations have applied for the funding. Scott ended up giving more than double what the original open call planned for, which was 250 awards of $1 million each, according to Lever for Change, the organization that managed the open call.

“In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount,” according to Lever for Change.

Scott’s giving strategy differs from her ex-husband Jeff Bezos, the owner of Amazon.

While Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sánchez announced a large, splashy $50 million donation each to actress Eva Longoria and retired Admiral Bull McRaven, Scott breaks up her huge sums of philanthropy to hundreds of smaller organizations.

“This Open Call award helps us take our fight for justice and equity to the next level, continuing our work to dismantle the legal, structural, and cultural barriers that contribute to gender inequity,” said Megan Peterson, the executive director of Gender Justice, an organization that aims to advance gender equality after receiving $2m

To move forward in the prize, organizations had to be rated by their peers. In fall 2023, the top-rated applicants advanced to a second-round interview with an external panel and then underwent a final round, Lever for Change said. The 279 organizations that were in the top tier of scores received $2 million each, and 82 organizations in the next tier received $1 million each.

Scott last December announced $2.15 billion in donations over the last year to her organization, Yield Giving.

In 2022, Scott said her team had donated more than $3.8 billion to 465 organizations over the course of nine months. She’s gifted $436 million to Habitat for Humanity and $84.5 million to Girl Scouts of the USA, its largest-ever donation from a single individual.

Scott holds a fortune of $36.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Princess of Wales’s altered photo “shouldn’t be a big deal,” – Trump

0

Ex-President Donald Trump says the edited photo of Princess Catherine and her kids should not be a big deal.

“That’s not a big deal because everyone goes to see a doctor. ” When you see movie actors, then meet them in person, you might wonder if they’re the same person you saw in pictures. I saw this happen, and it was only a small change. “I don’t get why there is so much fuss about that,” Trump said in an interview with Britain’s GB News that aired Tuesday.

“It’s a tough time, you know, they really went after her,” said the likely Republican candidate for president.

The picture was the first one taken of the princess since she had surgery in January. It was released to celebrate Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. But a few hours after Kensington Palace released it, four big photo companies said they wanted the photo to be removed because they were worried that it had been changed.

The debate about photo editing continued when it was claimed that a picture taken by Princess Diana of Queen Elizabeth and her family members had been changed using a computer. A CNN investigation discovered that the photo had been altered in 19 different spots.

Trump talked about more than one British royal in the GB News interview, not just Princess of Diana. The ex-president said that if Prince Harry lied about using drugs on his US visa form, they will have to do something about it.

“Could this mean not staying in America. ” asked Nigel Farage, host of GB News.

“Oh, I’m not sure. ” You need to tell me. “Just tell me,” Trump said.

Trump said that Harry, who lives in California, should not get special treatment just because he is part of the British royal family.

The Heritage Foundation is taking the US government to court to see if it followed the rules when it gave Harry a visa to come to the US. In the United States, if you have used drugs in the past, you may not be allowed to enter the country. Harry admitted to using different drugs for fun in his book “Spare,” which came out in January 2023.

US Supreme Court permits Texas to implement immigration law

0

The Supreme Court in America has paved way for Texas to start using a tough immigration law right away. It lets state officials arrest and hold people they think entered the country illegally.

The three liberal judges on the court disagreed.

Legal problems with the law are still being worked out in a higher court, but for now Texas has won a big victory in its fight against the Biden administration’s immigration policy.

The court had stopped the law from starting, but on Tuesday it allowed the law to move forward.

The Senate Bill 4 was signed into law by the Republican Governor. In December, Greg Abbott made it a state crime to enter Texas illegally and allows state judges to order immigrants to be sent back to their home countries. The government is mainly in charge of making sure that immigration laws are followed.

The new law makes immigration advocates worry that more Latinos in Texas will be unfairly targeted and could be held in detention or deported by the state.

A judge in Austin stopped the state from following the law. The 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals stopped the lower court’s decision for a short time and said the law would start on March 10 if the Supreme Court didn’t do anything. The Biden administration and others quickly made urgent requests for help.

Abbott said the court’s decision is good, but the case will still go to a higher court for review.

Karine Jean-Pierre, who speaks for the White House, said on Tuesday that “we strongly disagree” with the decision.

Please simplify this text. “SB” She said that the law will not only make Texas communities less safe, but it will also make things harder for the police and cause problems at the southern border. “SB 4 shows how Republican leaders are using the border issue for their own political gain and not focusing on real solutions. ”

The court did not give a reason for its decision.

As usual in emergency situations, the Supreme Court did not give reasons for its decision.

However, Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Justice Brett Kavanaugh said that the appeals court had only made a temporary “administrative” order. Barrett wanted to stop the Supreme Court from looking at these orders.

“To my knowledge, this court has never looked at a court of appeals’ decision to put a temporary hold on a case from a government agency. “I would not start a business. “When put in place, an administrative stay is meant to be a temporary pause before a decision is made about the request to delay the appeal. ”

Barrett said she thought it was not a good idea to bring a dispute to this court about whether a lower court made a mistake at an early stage.

Sonia Sotomayor, a judge, disagreed with the decision and said it will cause more problems with enforcing immigration laws.

Sotomayor wrote that the law changes the balance of power between the federal and state governments. For over 100 years, the national government has been in charge of allowing noncitizens into the country and making them leave.

“Texas can immediately start punishing many people from other countries and sending them back to Mexico,” Sotomayor wrote. “This law will create problems with other countries, make it harder to help people escaping danger, make it difficult for federal enforcement to work, make it harder for federal agencies to find and watch for security threats, and make noncitizens afraid to report abuse or trafficking. ”

Justice Elena Kagan said in her short disagreement that her thoughts on the case are just the beginning.

The judge said that the government handles immigration, and deciding who can come into the country and who has to leave, is its job.

The court in New Orleans will listen to arguments in the case on April 3.

It’s possible that the case will be heard again by the top court.

Barrett and Kavanaugh, who are important judges on the high court, said that the judges should not interfere with appeals courts when they use short delays to review documents.

Barrett said that if the 5th Circuit doesn’t make a decision soon, the Biden administration and the other people involved in the case might go back to the Supreme Court.

“The court might have to decide that a temporary stop has turned into a longer stop and act accordingly,” she wrote. “At this point in the case, it’s too early to make that decision. ”

Tami Goodlette, a lawyer for some of the people fighting against the law, said the court’s decision is “unfortunate” and puts people’s lives in danger for no reason.

“We are dedicated to continuing the fight to get rid of SB 4 for good, to prove that no state can take over federal immigration authority,” she said.

There has been a decrease in the number of migrants crossing the border following a surge in December.

Homeland Security officials told the media that not a lot of migrants are crossing the US-Mexico border right now, after a lot of people crossed in December.

On Monday, the US Border Patrol caught about 4,300 migrants at the southern border, according to a department official. The number of people coming to the border each day has decreased. In December, there were a lot of people coming but now there are fewer.

Migrant arrests fell by half in January compared to December, as reported by US Customs and Border Protection. In January, border officials met over 176,200 people at the US southern border, which is less than December when almost 302,000 people crossed. The CBP has not yet shared the total numbers for February.

Homeland Security officials say less people are crossing the border because the US and Mexico are talking and being stricter with the rules. But they also warn that the number of people trying to cross could go up again because there are a lot of people moving to the Western Hemisphere.

Argument about a law that many people disagree with.

The Biden government, two groups that support immigrants, and El Paso County are fighting against the law.

Lawyers for the government asked the high court to consider that the new law would seriously change the way the US and states have handled immigration for a long time.

“People may have different opinions about immigration. ” They always do. And legal representatives for the immigration groups and El Paso County expressed worry about recent immigration issues in Texas. “But California in the 1870s, Pennsylvania and Michigan in the 1930s, and Arizona in 2012 had the same thing happen. ” However, for 150 years, this Court has said that states cannot control who can enter and leave the country.

Texas Lawyer Ken Paxton, a member of the Republican party, and other state leaders told the Supreme Court that the Constitution allows Texas to protect itself from dangerous criminal groups that bring illegal drugs, weapons, and violence into the state.

Officials said that Texas is the first line of defense against violence coming from other countries. They also said that the state has to handle the deadly results of the federal government not being able or willing to protect the border.

IT IS SHAMEFUL TO CELEBRATE THE SALE OF MOPANI TO FOREIGNERS- Howard Kunda

IT IS SHAMEFUL TO CELEBRATE THE SALE OF MOPANI TO FOREIGNERS

….Zambia can only benefit fully from the mines through ownership says HOWARD KUNDA

Ndola.. Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Zambia Wake-Up Party (ZAWAPA) President Howard Kunda says it is shameful for some Zambians to celebrate the sale of Mopani Copper Mines to a foreign investor.

President Hakainde Hichilema is on Thursday scheduled to hand over Mopani to International Holdings Resources (IHR), a firm from the Middle East.

Mr. Kunda, the former Muchinga Member of Parliament said Zambia will only benefit fully from the mines through ownership.

“We have seen that His Excellency the President is happy and is inviting people to see that they are handing over Mopani Mines to the foreign investors. I think that we should be ashamed of ourselves that 60 year down the line we should be handing over our wealth to people who are coming to take that wealth. Surely, we can’t think of ourselves and the future generation? We need to change this Government,” Mr. Kunda said.

The Government through ZCCM IH has remained with a 49 percent stake in Mopani from the 90 percent it held since 2021 as new investor International Holdings Resources (IHR) takes over the mining firm

“That Mopani was supposed to be for the Zambians and to showcase how the Zambians would be able to run their own mines so that the wealth can be retained in this country. That is the only way we are going to develop our country. Without us getting involved in owning these mines 100 percent then we might as well just sell this country, just like we are doing, we are just selling this country. 2026 the Zambia people should wake up from this slumber so that we can use our heads,” he continued.

Mr. Kunda noted that Zambians are ripe to manage the mining sector.

“Now it is time to own the wealth, to own and control the economy. The economy is doing badly because we have no control of this economy ourselves. We don’t want our own people to be wealthy. All we are hearing is about getting money from whoever has. Surely, in this country why can’t we have our own millionaires or own billionaires? What is wrong with us Zambians? Let us wake up, just like our party is called Zambia Wake-Up Party. We need to stand up and be counted. This is our nation and there is no one who is coming to develop it. The foreigners will only take wealth to their countries. What is wrong with us?” he said.

The former Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee Chairperson warned President Hichilema to be wary of some decisions his Government was making.

“I want to remind President Hakainde Hichilema to be mindful of the decisions he is making for this country because we are looking at the fact that we are being sold. This country’s wealth is being sold as we can see through the mining sector which is supposed to be our cash cow. Money from the mines is supposed to be invested in agriculture, tourism, health and education sectors. We have seen that the interest of this Government is to sell this country to outsiders,” Mr. Kunda concluded.

Petauke MP Emmanuel Banda Suspended from National Assembly for 30 Days

0

Emmanuel Banda, the Member of Parliament for Petauke, has been suspended from the National Assembly for a period of 30 days following a complaint lodged by Clement Andeleki, the Member of Parliament for Katombora, regarding a defamatory video circulated on social media.

The suspension stems from a video in which Mr. Banda made allegations accusing the National Assembly of suspending opposition MPs to facilitate the misappropriation of funds. The video prompted Andeleki to file a complaint with the Speaker of the National Assembly.

In her ruling, Malungo Chisangano, the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, declared that Banda’s actions constituted a breach of parliamentary privilege and contempt of the House. Chisangano emphasized that Banda’s remarks cast a negative light on the integrity of the National Assembly, labeling them as unbefitting of a member of parliament and potentially damaging to the institution’s reputation.

Chisangano further expressed her hope that such behavior would cease, cautioning Banda against further misconduct. The ruling was delivered amid an attempt by Banda to disrupt proceedings, leading to his expulsion from the House.

The suspension serves as a disciplinary measure aimed at maintaining order and upholding the decorum of parliamentary proceedings. Banda’s suspension highlights the importance of maintaining civility and respecting parliamentary procedures, reminding MPs of their responsibilities as elected representatives. The PF MP has been suspended from Parliament at least 3 times in the last 4 months.

In November 2023, MP Emmanuel Banda was one of 17 PF members of parliament suspended for a period of 30 days. The suspension, followed an incident of misconduct that took place during a parliamentary session.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, announced the suspension, which she described as a response to “unparliamentary behavior” and a breach of the house’s decorum and integrity. The lawmakers’ actions were widely seen as a protest against the Speaker for purportedly denying them an opportunity to speak.

This is not the first time the MP finds himself in controversy.Former Post Newspaper journalist, Peter Sukwa, recently reached out to the Human Rights Commission, urging them to intervene and revive the case involving an alleged assault by Petauke Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Banda, who is accused of assaulting Sukwa and urinating in his mouth.

In a letter addressed to the Human Rights Commission, Sukwa highlighted the incident and the impact it has had on his life, noting that he has faced continuous mockery since the assault. Copies of the letter were also sent to Amnesty International, the Chief Justice, and the Zambia Institute of Independent Media Alliance (ZIIMA).

Sukwa expressed his ongoing distress and the need for justice in the matter. The journalist has been seeking avenues to address the alleged assault, seeking support from both national and international human rights organizations.

Emmanuel Banda had previously been fined 12,000 Kwacha for the alleged assault, with 10,000 Kwacha allocated as compensation to Sukwa. The reopening of the case could potentially bring new developments to light and ensure a thorough examination of the incident.
