Ten Players who Shaped Zambian Football

By Ponga Liwewe

These are ten players who, in their careers, were part of pivotal moments and periods that were instrumental in Zambia’s football’s sucess.

It is NOT a list of Zambia’s greatest players and is NOT in chronological order

1. Godfrey Chitalu

Nicknamed ‘Ucar’ after a popular battery brand manufactured by Union Carbide, Godfrey Chitalu broke barriers that no Zambian player would ever match. He was named Zambian Footballer of the Year on five occasions, holds the record for the highest number of goals scored in a single season, 107, and is ranks 5th on the FIFA list of scorers in international football with 79 goals. He first exploded on the scene for Kitwe United earning a reputation as the ‘bad’ boy of Zambian football, while scoring prolifically for the Kitwe side. He later moved to Kabwe Warriors where he became a national hero who would etch his name in Zambian football history forever.

2. Christopher Katongo

Led Zambia to victory in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals to share the top scorers award. His exemplary leadership drove a group of players rated far below their opponents to an unexpected cup win that ranks as the greatest shock in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations. He finished the 2007 season in the South African PSL as top scorer with 15 goals despite leaving for Denmark halfway through. In the Zambia national team his leadership was inspiration and he drove a team of average players to greater heights with the guidance of his coach Herve Renard. His drive and determination took him to Denmark, Germany, Greece, China and back to South Africa. But for him, Zambia would not have reached the heights they did in 2012.

3. Kalusha Bwalya

He became the most recognized player in Zambian football history by becoming the only player from Southern Africa to win the prestigious African Footballer of the Year Award in 1988 after Zambia’s outstanding performance at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. He scored six goals in four matches at the tournament, coming second to Brazil’s Romario who scored seven, but played two more matches. His six goals at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations makes him the highest Zambian scorer at a single tournament. On the pitch, he was a marvel to watch, leading a talented team to constant Africa Cup appearances in 1986, 1990, 1992,1994,1996,1998,2000, and 2002. His career took him to Belgium, Holland, and Mexico.

4. Wisdom Chansa

He became the only Zambian player to lead his team to a continental title when Power Dynamos beat Nigeria’s BBC Lions to win the African Cup Winners Cup in 1991, and was instrumental in the team that won its first league title in 1984. He captained the Power Dynamos team to their second ever league title in 1991, the year of their African success. The previous season, 1990, he led them to win three cup competitions in one season. A natural leader, his tireless work rate and influence on his team-mates made Power Dynamos one of Zambia’s most successful club sides in the country’s football history. Fans chanted his name for both club and country, one of the few players to win such an acclaim.

5. Freddie Mwila

He was one of the first Zambian players to play in England for Aston Villa alongside Emment Kapengwe. His goalscoring prowess made him one of the best strikers of his era. Though Zambian players would vanish from European football for over a decade until the eighties, he is recognized as a pacesetter in breaking a barrier by playing in England after having earlier made his mark at Atlanta Chiefs in the USA in the National Soccer League, NSL. Before his departure overseas he had been a key player for Rhokana United, scoring freely and it was this that would grab the attention of the former West Ham player Phil Woosnam who would take him to an unprecedented move overseas.

6. Dickson Makwaza

Dickson Makwaza is recognized for leading Zambia to the final of the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations where against all expectation he captained Zambia against the powerful Zaire Leopards, Africa’s dominant team at that time. The young Zambian side took a highly experienced Zaire team to a replay, making history in the process in the only final that has gone to a second match in CAF history with the first a 2-2 draw and Zambia losing the replay, 2-0. As a pillar at the back for both Mufulira Wanderers and Zambia, Makwaza led by example as a defensive stalwart and rallied his team-mates behind the cause at the time, taking Zambia to the highest levels of the African game where they would stay for many decades.

7. Kapambwe Mulenga

When Nkana FC became the most dominant club side in Zambian football history, no other player epitomised what the club stood for more than’Gents Power’ Kapambwe Mulenga. Robust at the back and renowned for his aggressive tacking, he also had a delicate touch that allowed him to play creatively in midfield. By far the most popular player in the team, he always gave 100% and Nkana’s nine titles in twelve years between the eighties and nineties stand out as testament to a team that totally dominated the local scene. His smooth transition to the national team equally endeared him in the hearts of fans countrywide.

8. Peter Kaumba

A rampaging winger down the left flank who devastated defences for both club and country, between 1980 and 1994, Peter Kaumba was the most dominant player in Zambian football. In 1982 he was the dominant figure in a Power Dynamos team that reached the final of the 1982 Africa Cup Winners Cup against Egypt’s Arab Contractors, becoming the first Zambian team to reach an African final. That year he was the league’s top scorer, Footballer of the Year and Sportsman of the Year. Alongside the great Alex Chola, he played a pivotal role in taking Power Dynamos to the summit of Zambian club football. Revered by the Power Dnamos faithful, his entrance into the pitch brought the crowd to its feet as he jogged majestically around the perimeter. He was voted Africa’s best left winger at the 1982 Africa Cup in Libya. He had a spell with top African side Africa Sport in Cote d’Ivoire between 1983 and 1984.

9. Alex Chola

Zambia’s most skillful player ever, Alex Chola left his indelible mark on Zambian football with his unbelievable array of football skills that mesmerised football fans across the country and in African football. The ‘Master Dribbler’ tore defences to shreds with immense dribbling ability and was equally adept at scoring goals, qualities that made him valuable equally as a centre-forward or second striker. His move from Mufulira Blackpool to Power Dynamos transformed the Kitwe side, drawing thousands of fans to the fast-rising team and making them a household name in Zambian football. Across Africa, his was the first name on lips of rival fans who longed to see his unmatched ability on the ball. Thousands poured through the turnstiles to see him weave his magic and they never left disappointed. He played over 100 times for Zambia and won the 1976 Footballer of the Year award.

10. Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu

As Zambia’s football growth accelerated in the sixties, Zambia’s first football superstar. Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndlovu, emerged from Mufulira, thrilling crowds across the country with skills that were nothing short of amazing. Grounds around the country were filled, and the Copperbelt became the launch pad for the start of an era that would see Zambia begin to become competitive against Africa’s best at continental football. He led Mufulira Wanderers to five league titles between 1963 and 1969. Clad in the green and white stripes of Mufulira Wanderers, Zoom took Zambian football to the start of a new era as the popularity of the game propelled its players to new highs. Improved international performances and open, attacking football thrived across the Copperbelt igniting the flames that would lead to a golden era for Zambian football.

Govt to repeal, replace public order Act

Govt to repeal, replace public order Act

By Fanny Kalonda

GOVERNMENT says it is aware that the public’s expectations on the public order Act are very high.
Speaking when he launched the review of the public order Act in Lusaka yesterday, home affairs minister Jack Mwiimbu said the objective was to repeal and replace the Act to develop a legal framework that regulates public assemblies, processions and meetings while being anchored on the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights and freedoms.

“You do recall that the UPND boycotted the National Dialogue Forum. The boycott was anchored on principle taking into account that the process was not consultative and it was not going to accommodate various interest groups in this country. Having learned from that scenario, we will not allow ourselves to fall in the same pit of failure to adhere and acknowledge the interest of the Zambian people,” he told journalists. “We are going to allow a free and fair consultative process because the law we are going to come up with is not for the new dawn administration. It is for the people of Zambia. And the people of Zambia will speak and make their point known through this consultative process.”

And Mwiimbu said the process would be undertaken in all parts of the country.
He expects that the presentation of the bill to Cabinet would be done in September.
“During the official opening of the First Session of the 13th National Assembly on the 10th September, 2021, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr Hakainde Hichilema, reiterated the need to enhance the democratic dispensation in the country by reviewing the public order Act. In this regard, Cabinet at its 9th meeting held on the 26th April, 2022 approved in principle to the review and amendment of the public order Act cap 113 of the laws of Zambia,” Mwiimbu said. “The overall objective of this law review process initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, working with the Zambia Law Development Commission and the Ministry of Justice, is to repeal and replace the public order Act in order to develop a legal framework that regulates public assemblies, processions and meetings while being anchored on the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights and freedoms.”

And Mwiimbu said the UPND being a victim of the public order Act, would avoid the same for others.
He disclosed that process would cost approximately K4 million.
“Zambia has been a beacon of democratic hope and stability in the southern African region as far as respecting the rule of law, freedoms and the human rights of citizens are concerned. The new dawn administration is committed to bringing on board all stakeholders to review the public order Act, cap 113 of the laws of Zambia. Government is aware that the expectation by the general public is very high on the revision of the public order Act as evidenced by media reports,” he said. “It is therefore important that wide consultations are undertaken to build consensus. All interest groups such as traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, non-governmental organisations, trade unions, Law Association of Zambia, political parties and academia, among others will have to be consulted. The process will not only protect the content of the revised public order Act, but also produce a forward-looking bill acceptable by all stakeholders.”

Mwiimbu said it was gratifying that various stakeholders had already developed position papers on the public order bill.
“The roadmap for the review of the public order Act will include appointment of the technical committee, receipt of oral and written submissions, national stakeholder consultative meetings, roundtable discussions, national stakeholders’ validation meeting, drafting meeting and presentation of the bill to Cabinet by 29th September, 2022,” said Mwiimbu. “The specific objectives are to, remove from the statute archaic provisions of the law that stifle the enjoyment of the freedom of assembly, association and expression in the conduct of public assemblies, processions and other forms of public gatherings. Develop a legal framework that guarantees autonomy, to law enforcement agencies, in the policing of public assemblies, processions and other forms of public gatherings; and devise measures to prevent arbitrary decisions and abuse of the law in the enforcement of the public order Act. I have no doubt in my mind that the goodwill shown by various stakeholders particularly political parties will result in a public order bill which will be adhered to by all.”

As Hunger Hits Home, Kalandanya Musical Ensemble Goes Prodigal – Starts Fooling Bally The Way They Fooled Chagwa Into The Loss Trench

AS HUNGER HITS HOME, KALANDANYA MUSICAL ENSEMBLE GOES PRODIGAL – STARTS FOOLING BALLY THE WAY THEY FOOLED CHAGWA INTO THE LOSS TRENCH

Emmanuel Chilekwa

25 June, 2022

So musicians after all, don’t sing what they believe in but sing for the highest and best bidder who can aid them put food on the table? They don’t even mind whether you win or lose, they’ll always leave you nurse or lick your wounds as they criss over to the high table flowing with milk and honey – they are not part of the loss mourners.

When some of these musicians enjoyed Chagwa’s cash for artists, ECL was the man of the moment. They could not even sleep but innovate songs that even the deaf and dumb sand and danced to rhythmically.
But life is harsh. The harsh realities of life has been able to dislodge one from enjoying his birthright to ignoring even what the mind reminds them about. A hungry person is an angry man. There are no negotiations with a hungry man. There are no compromises or reasoning when one is hungry. “ Sebana wikute ” becomes a saving deed of survival.

Barely 10 months on, like many millions of Zambians who are experiencing hardships, the Kalandanya Music Promotions – KMP label has felt what it means to lose “eating privileges” from the high table of the crumbs of the ruling party. They have made a 360 degrees turnabout and swallowed their pride – they are now singing praises for Bally.

Whilst they enjoy the trappings of singing for cash-in-the-bank under Edgar Chagwa Lungu, they seem not to realize that Bally and ECL are not churned from the same needle, the two are totally different – it is water and oil, the two don’t mix because they have different viscosity characteristics.

Remember when the sun shone and they made hay, they were dishing out ama 25 pin donations to then embattled Mumba Yachi who had lost his assets as a result of a personal calamity he suffered losing his properties.

It was this record label which told the nation that to remove Lungu, you needed to come with a mazembe . They even went as far as saying “God had already picked on Lungu as winner” because he had worked developmental wonders – schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and so forth. They sang the scintillating danceable PF official song “ ALEBWELELAPO PA MUPANDO ” and that is how they fooled ECL and the looting and plundering ensemble.

Today, this same music label has started to fool the current ruling UPND party, they think UPND is the same as PF where they were being nursed and pampered with financial rewards.

Bally is another. He takes no nonsense of caderism, patronism and doesn’t have a long hand when it comes to dishing out moneys. When His Veep GBM was with him, caders enjoyed working for the party because GMD is a natural “Father Christmas”, samadya eka , he eats with people, and he eats with a smile.

The KMP music label has just found that Noah has already closed the economic redemption door. They have gone to Bally rather too late for salvation because they didn’t see that the Mazembe they talked about was in Southern Province amassing One millions tons of votes against ECL.

There were musicians who sang honestly and ardently for Bally’s success. And indeed, it is just good that the KMP should avoid going to Bally’s camp to cloud the entrance. Let those who plied their time and energy for Bally now start eating with Bally.

It would not be wrong to believe that our musicians are economic singers – they sing for money. They go where they can eat. They do not even believe in what they sing for… they have no shame to eat their words.
True, they say, insala kapondo. Well, even in the Bible, when hunger pangs ravaged, someone sold out his birthright over a bowl of soup.

Now in this Bally kamfulumende, not even a bowl of soup is available for people who just come from the green bushes to the red camp of starvation fire.
They have eyes but they cannot read. In UPND, even hardworking party officials are beging ama One pin from simple women in the diaspora. In UPND, money to dish out, theliz no.

If a musical ensemble thinks speaking and singing good of Bally TODAY will fool Bally to start smiling at them, sorry Shamwari, Bally is not interested and does not entertain such turn-coats.

I wonder why people fail to study their leaders. One thing you cannot take away from Bally is that he does not forget. Those who crossed his path, those who tortured him and those who kept him well in prison – he rewards them both: good or bad, it depends on what you did for him or against him.
Just yesterday, he was in Europe in the European Parliament. He still went to tell the white folks how terrible the past regime was, how he was incarcerated unjustly and so forth. You could see even his face was emitting the pain he went through.

Whilst he was in Europe talking about his 127 days treason torture, back home, his Information and media Minister Chushi Kasanda was at Mukobeko Maximum Prison donating beds to prisoners and she ensure she visited Cell 4 and inspected that that Cell had flushing toilet and a bed. She pointed out that at the time Bally was incarcerated, he and his co-accused were sleeping on cold floor, no mattresses, no blankets.
So, if KMP thinks that Bally has forgotten that this musical outfit never wanted him to rule, they are mistaken. These folks sang it is “Lungu na Luo” and if one argued, “ bakaimwena ”.

Hunger is not your play mate. It has knocked. Four more years, at this starvation level is no child’s play. It is that season of ‘sebana wikute’, forget the principles, after all, who ever eats or puts principles on a dinner table?

UPND Alliance partners riled by Mweetwa remarks

UPND Alliance partners riled by Mweetwa remarks

The UPND-ALLIANCE COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS, has no time to indulge ourselves in petty issues, with those not at our level. Ours is seeking being relevant, and a commitment to assist His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, to deliver the change and Prosperity, to the People of Zambia, as we promised during the 12th August , 2021 General Elections. As an Alliance, we joined forces with our colleagues, to foster both the change, and afterwards serve in government together, what we promised to:

  1. Restore the rule of law.
  2. Re- construct the broken economy.
  3. Re- Unite the country.
  4. Restore the broken down social order.

The UPND-ALLIANCE COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS, is greatly dismayed, alarmed, and shocked by the; unsolicited, unmeasured, unfortunate, irresponsible, overzealous, false, naive, insensitive, and immature statements, attributed to one Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, against the Alliance Partners, on Friday, 24th June , 2022, at the UPND secretariat in a Press Briefing.

It is such irresponsible and immature statements, which made some of our Alliance Partners ,to be apprehensive, because of the inadvertently insidious; deception, propaganda, and betrayal of the sacred trust, reposed in this Alliance.

Whereas, the said Provincial Minister, for Southern Province , should have confined himself to his functions as; Spokesperson of the UPND, as a Party, and matters related to his Provincial functions , but rather in a strange fashion, has recently exposed his ignorance and unmeasured utterances, by overstepping his commentaries on matters related to government policy, which is the role of the Chief government Spokesperson, sadly . Furthermore , he has also been over- stepping the roles of the Presidential Spokesperson, which are not his lane and functions, sadly. We urge him to forthwith restrain himself, before he destroys the image of the Republican President, by seeking relevance in an; undue, careless, and immature manner. For a man of his Stature, as a learned Counsel he should have had a more measured approach, to politics, which he lamentably has failed.

Whereas, the UPND Spokesperson, demeaned and minimised the contributions of the ALLIANCE Partners, as little in the 12th of August, 2021 General elections, the contrary is true. That it’s Members came only three months before the elections. That there was no contracts, for Cabinet or government jobs. That the Zambian people had already decided to change government, even without the alliance. All this is further from the actual truth, that he is ignorant of, and not privy to, at the Council of Presidents level, to which he does not belong, at his level as Provincial Minister, or as a Member of Parliament.

Therefore , the Council of Presidents, of the UPND-ALLIANCE, and all its Partners, hereby, for the record state the following:

  1. That all Partners gave the UPND, a required National Character, which was marred, by tribal proclivities.
  2. That we answered the call of the Zambian people, to Unite, as Opposition Political Parties, against a brutal regime of the Patriotic Front ( PF).
  3. That political Alliances exist for power -sharing, everywhere in the world.
  4. That it was not a popular decision, to support the UPND at the time we joined the Alliance.
  5. That each Partner contributed overtly and covertly, to dislodge the PF government, and generate the extra 1 million votes of the 2.8 million votes.
  6. That the Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, and his Running Mate, now Republican Vice President, were both Alliance Candidates.
  7. That to insult or demean the Alliance Partners, is invariably to do it to both the Republican President Mr . Hakainde Hichilema and the Vice President, who are Members of the Alliance.
  8. That agreements, as to power- sharing and Apointments, were discussed at various meetings, before and even after the General Elections, at Presidential level, which Mr. Mweetwa must respect if he is loyal to his Party President, and if he is a disciplined member thereof.
  9. That his statements, are misplaced and misleading, making the President and Vice President, as deceptive towards Partners, and the entire Country, if as he stated that is their position as a Party.
  10. If we contributed very little, why has the Now Republican President, Vice President, and entire Cabinet, continued to recognise the Alliance Partners in State functions? Is it not because we are Principals of this New Dawn government administration?

CONCLUSIVELY, LET ALL THOSE IN UPND, WHO PEDDLE THE NARRATIVE THAT THE ALLIANCE PARTNERS, ARE NOT PART OF THIS NEW DAWN GOVERNMENT, BECAUSE THEY CONTRIBUTED VERY LITTLE, ASK THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT TO SAY THAT PUBLICLY. THEN THE PARTNERS WILL GLADLY OBLIGE, BUT LETS SEE THE GHASTLY CONSEQUENCES, THEREOF, COUNTRYWIDE.

UPND REJECT BWALYA KALANDANYA ENSEMBLE

Insoni Ebuntu

By Nicky Phiri

Insoni ebuntu…( this is a dream about a conversation between truth and hypocrites)

The point to my fellow young leaders is this:

Please have a set of principles and stick to them regardless.

Unless you have something you so much believe in that you are ready to lose everything, including your life in order to defend it, you don’t have any principle (s).

It is not good to be always moved my the wind of selfish and self aggrandisement.

A country can never be built by opportunist elements like these mozeshans.

Make no mistake, we are not fools like you could be.

You said then, that you did it for a pay.

We knew you lied. You did it because you didn’t have a spine to stand against evil. ..

You enjoyed, remained mute and cheered evil while evil wrecked the righteous!

Hypocrites!

We chose not to disagree with you, because we knew lies have short legs and evil while never overcome righteousness!

Today, you are here praising? And you are welcome by the way.

Question however is: who has paid you this time around? Because, you always do it for a pay?

Or is it now out of conviction? That is if you have what it takes to have a conviction.

From where I stand, your conviction is convinience and expidiance!

So, it can’t be out of conviction.

Conviction is a product of principle and principle is a product of belief and belief is a result of tested character.

You don’t have any of these, even just a quarter!

You, as far as I know have no conviction, no principle, no belief.

You are entirely driven by selfish and myopic motives..

Talk about vultures!

Okay. So when did you believe in the same person you said would never ever be?

Please don’t get it twisted. ..

He is your hero, not because you have said it, but simply because he is.

Point is, your voice is not any significant… you can keep it if you so wish.

It didn’t help your former master. So why would we think it will help us?

Your hypocrisy is embarrassing too.

While you are free to support and rally behind the vision, we will never forget who you are:

Hypocrites! Betrayers! Seller Out! Surrogates of Immortality!

The UPND Govt is being vengeful- Chishimba Kambwili

0

Patriotic Front (PF) Member of the Central Committee Chishimba Kambwili has said his recent arrest over the offence of expressing hatred and ridicule for persons because of tribe and place of origin is politically motivated.

Dr. Kambwili was apprehended by Police in Lusaka on Monday and transported to Kasama by road where he was detained until Thursday when the Magistrate Court granted him bail.

The former Chief Government spokesperson in the PF regime was granted a K50, 000 bail pending trial on Thursday after being charged with the offence of expressing hatred and ridicule for persons because of tribe and place of origin by Police.

Speaking to journalists and supporters after appearing before Kasama Resident Magistrate Samson Mumba, Dr. Kambwili said the UPND Government was being vengeful.

He said the New Dawn Government leadership must show true leadership by facilitating sincere healing in the nation after the last August elections.

Dr. Kambwili said he was not shaken by arrests because he is used.

The NDC founding President said UPND should stop repeating the mistake of mistreating opponents that was seen from previous governments.

“They are the ones who preach that when a person is arrested they must be given police bond.If I have broken the law, yes I am not above the law they can arrest me and take me to court. I am not refusing that but apprehending me in Lusaka and transporting me to Kasama, moving me the whole night. Locking me up for four days without a police bond is not fair. The arresting officer sent from Lusaka who was supposed to deal with my police bond application was elusive. They are just repeating what used to happen in the past. Mwebamunyinane Ubutungulushi kumwena umuntu mu fichitwa fyakwe.Umuntu nga cakweba ati alecita abanankwe ifyo bamucitile ninshi tentungulushi and mwe bena Zambia mumone ukuti ilyo mulesala mulesala intungulushi,” Dr. Kambwili said in an unusually low tone.

“Umuntu nganakwata icilandushi tentungulushi isuma. Ine ifyo napitamo mu ma politics ukunkaka, ukunjikata 14 times I can tell you about the people of Zambia. I can never ever do that to another human being no matter how much we can differ. Ifi ifyakwikata abantu no kubabika mu cifungo as a way of intimidating opponents must come to an end,” he said.

Dr. Kambwili warned that political power was temporary.

“This country needs proper healing. Healing and we must be truthful to one another ilyo tulecita ifintu so ine teti nsakamane ifi mwampishamo nalibelela. Nomba ico mufwile ukwishiba nga imwe lelo mwafumamo. I used to tell previous governments ifi mulecita naimwe kuti baisa micita ififine. Political power is very temporary, use it to advance the well being of the people and create an enabling environment where people can live well and don’t go to bed hungry. If you feel that you can intimidate me politically ine nalishimpula ngo musunga mfwaya fye ukwa kusha umutwe,” Dr. Kambwili said.

No Standing Ovation For Hichilema From Me- Samuel Kasankha

No Standing Ovation For Mr. Hichilema

As more Zambians react to President Hakainde Hichilema’s speech at the European Union parliament, Samuel Kasankha writes…

NO STANDING OVATION FROM ME.

My president, His Excellency, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, can get as many kudos and standing ovations for his wonderfully crafted speeches abroad but as long as we are chasing after more foreigners than we already have to come and do things for us – things which I believe we can and should do ourselves – and all we will get are crumbs, I’ll give him a sitting ovation if such exists.

Our focus now should be on how we can give back to Zambians such industries as poultry, fish farming, block making, bakeries and the like which are sadly in the hands of the same foreigners we are still pursuing and who are paying locals peanuts while keeping them under slave work conditions.

Before you start quarrelling needlessly, please do a survey in as many industries as you can and find out what foreign investment is doing at the level of “creating employment”! You will cry from the sad stories workers will tell you.

Surely when are we going to say enough is enough in a country of suffering masses in which even small grocery business is monopolized by Rwandese, Burundese and the like and malls are the preserve of South Africans?

Are we accepting that we are INCAPABLE of ever doing anything ourselves? This narrative must change. Let us sit down fellow country men and women and determine our own destiny. If we are where we are because we never thought about it before that we are giving away everything we have to outsiders, bamwisa, let us put our heads together now and agree how best we can do it by ourselves for ourselves.

Sorry. No standing ovation for me no matter how good the speeches that invite vultures to come feast on what we have.

Zambia is our Heritage

Let ZAMBIANS win.

WELL DONE HON. MINISTER OF DEFENCE

0

WELL DONE HON. MINISTER OF DEFENCE

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Minister of Defence Hon. Ambrose Lwiji Lufuma MP has emphasised that the Zambia Army upholds discipline, professionalism and integrity which are among the core values of the military.

He has disclosed that the matter of youths that were brutalised and beaten by some military personnel in Luapula Province, is under investigations and culprits will be disciplined.

Amidst the irrational and drowning voices and keyboard warriors of the praise singers, you would think that the abnormal had become normal in this country. That the abuse of state institutions as seen in the past, would continue unabated.

My view about this was beginning to crystallize when an official and irresponsible statement was made by the Director General for Civil Military Affairs, Brig. General Genoh Muke, who clearly condoned the inhuman treatment and torture of the boys and trivialised the entire matter by saying; “A few slaps do not constitute brutality”.

It is therefore gratifying to note a leadership display by the Minister of Defence, Hon. Lufuma expressing commitment to national values and condemning inhuman treatment and torture by the officers.

Members of Zambia Defence and Security Officers are among the well-taught and highly disciplined in Africa and this upholding of these values are confirmed by repeated good reports about the Zambian personnel that participate in international peace-keeping missions across Africa.

So some were confused about the two cases.

While the insults issued by the youths against the President are unacceptable and must be condemned, the illegal and excessive reaction by trained personnel, who even committed grave offences in the mistaken belief that they were upholding law and order and were clearly trying hard to impress their superiors and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, was disappointing.

The law regarding criminal defamation of the President will remain a constant subject of law reforms because we, as a people, aspire to grow our democracy.

It was impressive to note that the Human Rights Commission, the Law Association of Zambia and other entities demonstrated and applied progressive pressure against abuse of state institutions and called for disciplinary action against the rogue officers.

Prophet Isaiah Brian Sovi says night clubs are evil!

0

Lusaka prophet says night clubs are evil!
Lusaka based Prophet Isaiah Brian Sovi writes; Did you know that night clubs are altars of the devil and portals of Hell? I personally know about 2 different individuals that saw a demon standing among people having fun in the same night club.

Altars represent portals, a portal is a door that allows spiritual powers to flow in a specific area on the earth. An altar can be any dedicated place were people can worship and honor their God. For example a church is an altar of God; nonetheless, an altar can be built anywhere, in the house, on the mountain were you can pray and fast from…etc. Genesis 12:7.

The altars of God are also portals of heaven, portals of heaven are openings or doors that allow angelic activities or the power of God to flow or manifest in certain areas or places, that is why in churches and at prayer mountains, we witness demons fleeing , demons getting powerless, agitated, through people; because those locations are active places for Gods powers. In Ezekiel 1 a portal of heaven opened.
Humans can also be portals of God, if they live righteously and allow Jesus Christ to live in them, because Jesus Christ himself is a portal of heaven. John 11.

The same way there’s portals and altars of heaven, there’s also altars and portals of hell. These are grave yards, witch doctors shrines, satanic shrines, psychics altars, satanic temples, certain waters, idol temples, idol altars and lastly the night clubs. These are active places for the devil which are doors to the underworld/hell, allowing demonic activities and satanic powers to flow and manifest.

The night club is a very very forgotten altar of satan and portal of hell. This doesn’t mean the night club owners are aware, they might be innocent and genuinely doing it for business, but, that doesn’t mean the very first night club agenda was innocent, it was created for that sole purpose of it being an altar of satan.

In the club some people go there for prostitution, some go there to fulfil their sexual desires, there’s always people fighting, people cursing each other, some people have been murdered there, some people get so drunk and offend others and God, some people got so drunk and died in road accidents, after clubbing some people got raped, some people contracted diseases, some ended up in police in prison.

The devils and the devils agents powers are more active at night, from 12 am to 05 am. That is why they work in the night. Don’t you wonder why night clubs only operate at night? from night to before dawn? Devils agents both male and female are sent to clubs for work, that is also their active place of work. Their work is to sleep with people, through that they can destroy or steal ones destiny, destroy marriages, break families , destroy careers, make one lose interest in God, make people barren/impotent, destroy businesses, cause hatred and rejection on people, they can also turn one into a sex slave too and also initiate others into the kingdom of satan to do the same work. And where ever these are, demons are there.

If you have been to the club you must agree that it is a very active demonic place, what happens there is the opposite of what God wants people to be, only sin is being practiced there. This also doesn’t mean every person that visits the club is demonic or is a sinner, there are innocent people that go there to have fun, dance, go there for music or just for a few drinks and return home. But how safe are you, going into a satanic altar where there’s an active portal of hell, full of devils agents acting like normal people and full of demonic spirits? My brother , my sister pray hard before going there or refrain from being there.

Barack and Michelle Obama issue powerful statements after U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade
After Roe v. Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court, restricting women’s access to abortion, former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama reacted.

The Obamas joined other people in expressing their reactions to the decision, which many have dubbed the worst day for abortion rights in fifty years.

Barack Obama urged people to vote and “unite with the activists who’ve been sounding the alarm on abortion access for years” in a statement following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues — attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans,” Barack Obama wrote on Twitter and Instagram.

The statement continued: “Across the country, states have already passed bills restricting choice. If you’re looking for ways to respond, @PPFA, @USOWomen, and many other groups have been sounding the alarm on this issue for years — and will continue to be on the front lines of this fight.

“Join with the activists who’ve been sounding the alarm on abortion access for years — and act. Stand with them at a local protest. Volunteer with one of their organizations. Knock on doors for a candidate you believe in. Vote on or before November 8 and in every other election. Because in the end, if we want judges who will protect all, and not just some, of our rights, then we’ve got to elect officials committed to doing the same.”

Michelle Obama took to her own Twitter and Instagram accounts to write: “I am heartbroken – for the teenage girl, full of zest and promise, who won’t be able to finish school or live the life she wants because her state controls her reproductive decisions; for the mother of a nonviable pregnancy who is now forced to bring that pregnancy to term; for the parents watching their child’s future evaporate before their very eyes; for the health care workers who can no longer help them without risking jail time.”

Anita Alvarez banned from competing in artistic swimming final at the World Championships in Budapest today, 48 hours after she fainted in the pool and stopped breathing for 2 minutes

0

US artistic swimmer, Anita Alvarez has been banned from competing in the team final at the World Championships today, 48 hours after she was dragged unconscious from the pool.

Alvarez fainted during her individual routine in Budapest on Wednesday afternoon, June 22, and had to be dramatically rescued by her coach, Andrea Fuentes.

The swimmer had hoped to take part in the final today, but the International Swimming Federation decided to exclude her just hours before the event was due to begin.

This comes after coach Fuentes said the four Olympic and 16 World Championship medals had a good chance of taking part to represent her country after tests.

Fuentes revealed Alvarez stopped breathing for ‘at least two minutes’ during the ordeal following her performance in the women’s solo free event.

Alvarez regained consciousness after being recovered from the water, received immediate first aid, and was reportedly recovering well.

She broke her silence on her latest ordeal overnight in an interview with NBC Nightly News and hailed Fuentes’ actions.

She said: ‘I mean I say this all the time to her and to other people, [I’m] just so grateful to have her as a coach. When I found out she was coming to be our coach, it was like, I didn’t believe it.’

Of the incident, she added: ‘I remember feeling like it was a really great performance. Like, my best one by far and not only just how I performed but just that I was actually enjoying it and really living in the moment too. So, because of that I feel really happy and really proud.

‘And then at the very end, I do remember like the very last arm I did, I gave like, it’s such a simple small arm. But I was like give everything until the very end and I did that and then I remember going down and just being like, kind of like, ‘uh-oh, I don’t feel too great. And that’s literally the last thing I remember actually.’

During an Olympics qualifying event in Barcelona 2021, Fuentes also saved the swimmer after she was filmed diving in and pulling her to safety when she fainted in the pool.

London doctor refused to remove vital organ of ’15-year-old’ donor brought by Senator Ike Ekweremadu for his daughter’s kidney transplant because the passport procured for the boy showed his age as ’41 years’

Top British publication, Daily Mail has revealed more details surrounding the alleged organ trafficking case involving Nigerian Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, who are currently detained in the UK.

Ike, 60, and Beatrice Ekweremadu, 55, are accused of taking the homeless boy to the UK from Nigeria to transplant his organs into their daughter who is suffering from kidney failure.

According to Daily Mail, a consultant working in a NHS hospital refused to remove a vital organ from a teenager allegedly trafficked to London from the streets of Lagos by the former deputy president of the Nigerian Senate and his wife, a court has heard.

The doctor at the Royal Free in Camden became suspicious about whether the alleged victim was aware he was the donor of the kidney and whether he was 41 as his passport claimed.

The report claimed the ’15-year-old’ boy was given the passport of a ’41-year-old’ in order to get into the UK, but did not know he was there to donate a kidney until he went a hospital appointment in London, a court heard yesterday.

After he arrived in the capital in February he had a string of medical appointments about kidney donation, but a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North London, became concerned about the boy’s real age and if he knew he was there to donate an organ, it is alleged.

Prosecutor Damla Ayas told Uxbridge Magistrates Court yesterday: ‘The victim was 15. In Nigeria, he was approached by both defendants. He was homeless on the streets of Lagos. They deceived him and promised him a better life in the UK. He was given a passport for a 41-year-old. The passport was illegally obtained by these defendants.’

‘He was provided with a medical travel visa saying the purpose of the travel was to provide medical treatment for the defendants’ daughter who was undergoing dialysis in relation to a number of health issues.

‘It was premeditated, it was planned. Blood tests were obtained in Nigeria and he travelled to the UK in February this year.

‘He was taken to several medical appointments in particular a medical appointment at the Royal Free Hospital and was spoken to by a consultant about the organ harvesting for a kidney transplant.

‘The consultant was concerned about his actual age and was concerned he was not aware he was the donor of the kidney. He only found out that the purpose of his visit was for an organ transplant when he visited the hospital’. Ayas said

Police were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery laws last month.

Ekweremadu has been in the UK for at least the past fortnight having met with members of the Nigerian community in Britain in Lincoln around ten days ago.

He tweeted: ‘It was a pleasure and an honour to receive a letter of appointment by the University of Lincoln, UK, as Visiting Professor of Corporate and International Linkages. I also got a highly treasured gift – a copy of the Magna Carta. It was created in 1215, about 807 years ago’.

They arrested the couple two days ago at Heathrow Airport as they attempted to board a plane to Turkey – where it was suggested that the procedure could take place – the court heard.

Ekweremadu, 60, is said to have had £20,000 on him at the time of his arrest, according to prosecutors.

The teenage boy is now under the care of safeguarding authorities and the Metropolitan Police, officials say.

Ekweremadu and accountant wife Beatrice, 55, are charged with conspiracy to arrange or facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

Prosecutor Damla Ayas said: ‘It is a conspiracy in relation to human trafficking offences for the purposes of organ harvesting. The victim, in this case, is 15 years old

‘They the couple were interviewed at the police station. Both of the defendants have provided a prepared statement.

‘Mr. Ekweremadu in his prepared statement denied allegations of human trafficking.

‘He said at no stage has he arranged transport for anyone with intention to exploit them.’

His wife similarly denied the allegations in her prepared statement, the court heard.

Gavin Irwin, representing Ekweremadu, said: ‘There is no question this is a serious allegation. Mr Ekweremadu is a member of the senate in Nigeria.

‘He has previously held an even more senior role as deputy president of the senate.

‘He is a member of the bar in Nigeria. He is a principal in a law firm that bears his name.

‘Those issues taken together go way beyond him being a person of good character…rather that he has led a blameless life as a public servant.’

Mr. Irwin added that the allegations were ‘nothing short of preposterous’.

Antonia Gray, for Mrs Ekweremadu, said: ‘She has never been complicit or involved in any alleged illegal trafficking of any young person.

‘She is a financial accountant…with an unblemished record.’

The couple have an address they could stay at in Willesden, northwest London, the court heard.

The prosecutor made an application to adjourn matters for 14 days.

Ms. Ayas said: ‘In respect of these offences Attorney General consent is required and the Crown require 14 days for that to be obtained.’

Magistrate Lois Sheard said: ‘These are serious allegations and these matters are now adjourned until 7 July back here at Uxbridge.’

Ms. Sheard remanded both defendants into custody ahead of their hearing next month.

The Ekweremadus are charged with ‘conspiring to arrange or facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation….between 1 August 2021 and 5 May 2022 within the jurisdiction of Central Criminal Court’.

The investigation was launched by the Met’s Specialist Crime team after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

The Met Police has confirmed that the boy is safe and being looked after.

When Silence Means Consent: Wynter Kabimba Vs Fred M’membe

When Silence Means Consent: Wynter M. Kabimba, SC ODS, President, Economic Front

There is a common proverb in the English language that “there is wisdom in silence’’. This principle is at times used in criminal law to protect an accused person from possible self-incrimination. But silence can also mean consent.

This is what we see in the High Court action brought in 2018 by Fred M’membe and Cosmas Musumali (2nd Plaintiff) against Wynter M. Kabimba (1st Defendant), Millennium Radio, and the Daily Nation newspaper. The court action came on the heels of some Rainbow Party members who broke away to form the Socialist Party, a democratic right which is guaranteed for them under the Zambian Republican Constitution. The matter was heard and determined by the Honourable Madam Justice S. Kaunda Newa who delivered judgement in January 2021.

Although Fred M’membe was the 1st Plaintiff in the matter, he chose not to appear in court to assert his claim, a decision I thought was wise on his part considering what awaited him in cross-examination. Instead, Cosmas Musumali, a man who in medieval Greece would pass for a eunuch had to bear the brunt of cross-examinationcross-examination alone.
In her meticulous judgment which Fred M’membe and the Socialist Party general secretary decided not to appeal, the judge accepted the evidence herebelow and made her findings accordingly:

1. “The 1st Defendant in his defence stated that members of the Socialist Party, who included the Plaintiffs, have been attending the MST workshops in Brazil since 2015, where LGBT, rights are promoted. To substantiate this allegation, the 1st Defendant called DW1 as his witness, who testified that he went on the MST education course in Brazil in 2016, at the facilitation of the Socialist Party.’’

2. “This witness (DW1) told the Court that he only stayed in Brazil for three (3) weeks out of the twelve (12) weeks duration of the course. He explained the reason for this as being, there they were being taught that socialism means being atheist, and accepting homosexuality.’’

3. “DW1 in his testimony stated that a South African national (name withheld), had complained to the lecturer when two men who sat at the front of the class were kissing and cuddling, and the lecturer had told him that as a socialist one needed to embrace and accept that.’’

4. (The second witness) “PW2 in cross-examination a conceded that one of the objectives of the MST course is to promote LGBT rights through workshops. The 2nd Plaintiff in his testimony agreed that he is associated with MST as a lecturer.’’

5. “The evidence regarding the MST, with which the 2nd Plaintiff has been associated as a lecturer, and which college workshops have been attended by the 1st Plaintiff (M’membe), PW2, PW3, PW4, and DW1 among others who have been associated with the Plaintiffs and for some with the Socialist Party, promotes LGBT rights.’’

6. “It is also on record that the 2nd Plaintiff testified that as a cross-examinationmember who is in charge of membership of the Socialist Party, he would allow a person that states that he is homosexual, to join the party.’’

7. “The testimony given by DW1 which was not challenged in cross-examination, was that at the MST, they are taught that persons of different sexual orientation should be accepted, as part of Socialism.’’

8. “The evidence given by the 2nd Plaintiff shows that the Socialist Party tolerates persons of different sexual orientation, and this is what the 1st Defendant in the interview on Millennium Radio said.’’

9. “The evidence as a whole establishes that the 2nd Plaintiff is associated with the MST in Brazil, as a lecturer, which advances the rights of the LGBT community, and which the 1st Plaintiff has attended alongside some of the witnesses who testified in this matter. As testified by DW1, the MST in its teachings advocates for the acceptance of LGBT persons and, therefore, the Socialist Party with the 2nd Plaintiff as its General Secretary is tolerant towards persons of different sexual orientation, including homosexuals and lesbians. The 2nd Plaintiff confirmed this in his testimony.’’

10. “The record also shows that the MST teaches people to embrace and accept LGBT persons. Travel to Brazil to learn about socialism facilitated by MST establishes that the Socialist Party agrees with the objectives of the MST, which include advancing LGBT rights.’’

Mmembe-with-Kabimba

11. “In Zambia, there is no recognition of LGBT rights, and any acts associated with such are criminalised. Therefore, any person advocating such rights is breaking the law, and any political leader aspiring to lead the country who advocates for the same may not be said to be honest and of integrity, and consequently fit to lead the nation.’’

12. “The rest of the articles named in the statement of claim as being defamatory, were also made in relation to the assertions and comments made by the 1st Defendant during the radio interview, with the comments having been found to be fair comment. The articles have not in any way been established to have quoted anything untrue. Thus, they are equally fair comment.’’

13. “The claim for damages for defamation of character accordingly fails, with costs to the defendants, to be taxed in default of agreement. Leave to appeal is granted.’’

State House And Promoters Of Gay Rights- Dr Fred M’membe

Dr Fred M’membe
STATE HOUSE AND PROMOTERS OF GAY RIGHTS

If the UPND really wants to know who is dealing with the defenders, protectors and promoters of gay rights, they should start with State House.

On September 29, 2021 President Hakainde Hichilema hosted an ambassador of gay rights at State House. His name is Mr Tony Blair – a former British prime minister. Mr Hichilema held talks with Mr Blair on the possible collaboration between Zambia and the Tony Blair Institute for global change. Mr Hichilema said the institute is doing commendable work and hopes it can assist Zambia.

Mr Blair said his institute stands ready to help the new dawn administration. Mr Blair has been recognised as one of the top gay icons of the past three decades, along with figures such as Boy George, Sir Ian McKellen and Barbra Streisand. Gay Times said Blair’s status as an ambassador of gay rights was undeniable. Mr Blair, as British prime minister, introduced laws recognising trans people, civil partnerships, banned employers from sacking employees because of who they love and made homophobia a hate crime.

Mr Joe Biden, on May 4, 2012 told NBC’s “Meet the Press” anchor David Gregory: “I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love? And that’s what people are finding out is what all marriages, at their root, are about, whether they’re marriages of lesbians or gay men or heterosexuals.”

This is the President of United States today, the current occupant of the White House. And early in his presidency Mr Hichilema was a guest at the White House – something they were very proud of, were boasting about!

This week Mr Hichilema visited European Union Parliament in Brussels and addressed it. Gay rights in the European Union are protected under the European Union’s (EU) treaties and law. Same-sex sexual activity is legal in all EU states and discrimination in employment has been banned since 2000. The Treaty on European Union, in its last version as updated by the Treaty of Lisbon in 2007 and in force as of 2009, makes the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union legally binding for the member state of the European Union and the European Union itself. In turn, Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union includes an anti-discrimination provision that states that “any discrimination based on any ground such as […] sexual orientation shall be prohibited.”

Furthermore, the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union provides in Articles 10 that the European Union has a positive duty to combat discrimination (among other things) on the grounds of sexual orientation and provides in Article 19 ways for the Council and the European Parliament to actively propose pass legislation to do so. These provisions were enacted by the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1999.

In June 2010, the Council of the European Union adopted a non-binding toolkit to promote LGBT people’s human rights. In June 2013, the Council upgraded it to binding LGBTI Guidelines instructing EU diplomats around the world to defend the human rights of LGBTI people. So if one is looking for gays and defenders, protectors and promoters of gay right the starting point should be State House.

And this is the problem with malice, it boomerangs. Bob Marley sang in a reggae rhythm, “Why boasteth thyself, oh evil man
Playing smart and not being clever?
I said you’re working iniquity
To achieve vanity, yeah (if I sow, I sow)…No weak heart shall prosper
And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it…”

PARLIAMENT RATIFIES PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTMENTS OF ACC DIRECTOR GENERAL GILBERT PHIRI, LAURA MITI AND OTHERS

LUSAKA – JUNE 24, 2022

PARLIAMENT has today ratified the 12 appointments of officers for the Judicial Complaints Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission and Human Rights Commission made by President Hakainde Hichilema in March this year.

In a notice of motion moved by Sesheke UPND member of parliament Romeo Kangombe and seconded by Kasama Central PF member of parliament Sibongile Mwamba this morning, the House was urged to adopt a report of the parliamentary select committee that was appointed to scrutinise the presidential
appointments of the underlisted officials.

Those ratified are retired High Court judge Prisca Matimba Nyambe and Chad Himoonga Muleza to
serve as members of the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC).

President Hichilema appointed the duo on March 29, 2022.

Others ratified are Musa Mwenye State Counsel,
Ireen Musonda Chongo Lamba, Dr Henry Bwanga Mbushi and Dr O’Brien Kaaba to
serve as the chairperson, and members of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Board,
respectively.

The quartet was appointed by the President on March 28, 2022.

Further, Gilbert Andford Phiri, who was appointed on March 30, 2022, has been ratified to serve as the director-general of the ACC.

Dr Pamela Towela Sambo has been ratified to serve as the vice-chairperson of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) while Reverend Canon Emmanuel Yona
Chikoya, Tom Trevor Shamakamba, Laura Mary Miti and Christine Chama have also been ratified to serve as commissioners of the HRC.

The HRC officials were equally appointed by President Hichilema on March 28, 2022.

Dr Pamela Towela Sambo comes in to deputise Mudford Mwandenga.

In his motion, Mr Kangombe said there were no adverse negative reports against the 12 nominees from the witnesses interviewed.

The lawmaker said the constitutional requirement in Article 259, relating to gender balance and the inclusion of persons with disability in appointments, has been observed.

“In this regard, the committee commends the appointing authority,” Mr Kangombe said.

“However, the committee notes that Article 259 (1) (c) regarding taking into account youth representation has [not] been adhered to. The committee therefore urges the appointing authority to take this into consideration whenever making appointments in future.”

The committee, after due and thorough consideration, analysis and evaluation of the written and oral submissions presented to it by the witnesses and the interviews with the nominees, is of the view that all the nominees are suitably qualifies and poses the requisite competence to serve in the position which they have been appointed to.

Justice minister Mulambo Haimbe told the House that all the nominees have a proper track record and that they deserved ratification.

Others who debated the motion are Shiwang’andu PF member of parliament Stephen Kampyongo, Lunte PF member of parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya, Nalolo PNUP member of parliament Imanga Wamunyima, Lumezi independent member of parliament Munir Zulu, Feira PF member of parliament Emmanuel Tembo, Chawama PF member of parliament Tasila Lungu, Luena UPND member of parliament Mubita Anakoka and local government minister Gary Nkombo.

KCM IS A TIME BOMB ON OUR TREASURY IF NOT RESOLVED TODAY

By Miles B. Sampa, MP
24.06.2022

Yesterday heard the Mines Minister Hon Kabuswe turn himself into a complainant and not the solution provider to the KCM quandary. He has been doing that since 9 months ago. While he basks in champagne and caviar, KCM workers and Chingola residents are starving and desperately getting worse off.

I remember about 2013 when I felt so strong that our PF Government should not borrow any further external funds at that point. I thought the first $750M Eurobond should have just been the only one contracted until after some 5 year later when funds had been absorbed or simmered into the economy and produced tangible fruits or results.

When a vote was brought into Parliament to increase the burst threshold or ceiling of what the Country can borrow from the international lenders, I refused the collective responsibility government dictum and abstained the vote (records present in the Parliament hansard). Of course I got into trouble but my fears have come to pass some 10 years later and my conscience vindicated.

That’s how I feel now about the current status of our mining sector. My conscience tells me we are at crossroads and if certain shrewd decisions are taken or not taken, we can make or further sink the economy of the Country. At the heart of this argument is the Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

Unlike what most may be anticipating, the IMF deal or money is not available for any domestic projects and recurrent expenditures for the people. IMF funding is some book entry meant for balance of payment restructuring. All it does is give or enhance credibility and goodwill to the country for likes of World Bank, EU and others money institutions to ‘unlock’ grants and other concessional funding. It’s this consequent funding that Government would have the ability to spend on actual projects like water reticulation, housing, roads, rail lines and on some recurrent expenditure.

With all that may have gone wrong economically last year 10 years, the current and economic oxygen for the nation is from our Copper mines. Mopani mine is 100% under Government hands and they are at liberty to continue running it or invite international equity partners or investors.

As for KCM, it is a very hot potato and likely to explode in our faces some day if not handled well. My objective and non political view is that the mine is actually still in the hands of Vedanta who acquired it legally in 2004. The money they made in their 18 years at the mine was being retained or reinvested back underground including on the potential ‘jackpot’ Konkola deep.

While they could have been cashing out to shareholders via dividends, account books retained the money by investing and developing the mine. This means no major profits were recorded for income tax but mineral loyalty was being paid. The last government misconstrued this for tax invasion and moved in with receivership gloves.

Matter has been in various local and international courts thereafter but the reality is that Vedanta still legally owns the mine. We run a huge potential risk of compensating them bigly when judgement is made against us. This is because commercial agreements and transactions are made through signed contracts. Only what is in the signed agreements makes it inside the court rooms and not ‘he said , she said’ arguments.

Chingola is on ice and there is no money in circulation for the residents and entire country partly because KCM is non functioning. No one is there to dig the copper out which employs several bread winners. At the moment the so called care takers are importing copper ore from Congo for the KCM smelting plant at a minimal fee. A case of a maize farmer importing maize for their milling plant when they have a huge field full of maize.

KCM can only start contributing to the treasury when if it’s fully operational. The briefcase local and international ‘consultants’ posing as advisor to the Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Finance on KCM are just conmen looking for a quick stipend. Anglo American is such a big conglomerate with huge repution to protect and they would never risk stepping their feet on a mine that has unresolved ownership legal battles.

The Mines Minister and Mines PSs appointed by the President seem to have no say on Mines other than become complainants aswell. Some briefcase conmen are busy misleading ZCCM-IH so they indentify other briefcase unlisted conmen investors to pose as new buyers for KCM. Upon arrival all they will do is sale any bit of remaining assets they will find and then declare the mine ‘too flooded’ before bolting like Anglo did in 2003.
Maybe we should start ‘Naming and Shaming’ these conmen upto no good for the President and the Country.

Just like I did on over borrowing risks in 2013 (record mut be at Statehouse and MOF), I place on record that if KCM is not given back to Vedanta soonest, Chingola residents will become destitute and the Government will years from now have to compensate Vedanta with billions of dollars. This will be when and not if international commercial courts make judgements in favour of Vedanta against the Zambian Government.

The new investors we are keen to attract in the mining sectors have their eyes on events at KCM. It’s a sensitive sector wherein if you touch one investor unfairly, means you have touched and annoyed all. Get Vedanta to start operations at KCM today and if current government policy is to restructure ownership away from them, exit clauses inside signed contracts of 2004 should be evoked.

KCM is hostage to a political problem of a few years ago and can only be resolved by a today political solution.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Changala, Msoni and others: Of “Nkotes” Attempting to Skip the Queue!

0

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

The other day, one of our much respected and influential daily tabloids, The Mast, carried a front-page story with a screaming headline – “UPND HAS USED, DUMPED PARTNERS…..it’s highest mark of betrayal, insincerity – Changala.”

The article goes on to report that Brebner Changala, a middle-aged man who fashions himself as a good governance advocate, has complained that “The UPND has not taken care to ameliorate or indeed repay that critical support that they canvassed prior to the August 12 general election. They brought many political parties, individuals and organisations on board in which UPND was used as a special purpose vehicle to remove the cantankerous PF.”

Changala goes on to give a catalogue of individuals whom President Hichilema or indeed other senior government officials have neglected to pay particular attention to, as if they’re some kind of demigods, chiefly among them – Sishuwa Sishuwa, Gilbert Temba, Linda Kasonde, John Sangwa, Trevor Simumba, and Fackson Shamenda!

In the same story, the leader of a lackluster or kantemba political party dubbed, All People’s Congress Party, Nason Msoni, is quoted as warning the UPND of sidelining people who fought with them in opposition.

“It is dangerous political assertion to trivialise the working together of the Opposition political parties by the UPND party. Dismiss the opposition political parties working together at your own peril!” Msoni is quoted as having written on his Facebook page.

This is a sheer case of rumblings of a clique of bitter and desperate individuals that feel the President owes them a favour for having contributed to the removal of PF from power, in one way or another.

What do we make of this?

We find this highly immoral and absolutely hypocritical! It is our utmost understanding that patriotic citizens are motivated to stand up and say no to any injustice or corruption such as witnessed during the PF regime, not by utter greed or selfish reasons, but a resolve to leave a better legacy for their children, and children’s children. Now, what is coming from the so-called senior or prominent citizens is disappointing!

Why can’t they take a cue from much respected and admired civil rights activist Laura Miti who observes thus, “What seems to amaze is the number of people that feel they should have jobs because UPND is in government. Which trenches? The point is you cannot demand a job. None of us deserve a job. What we should all expect when we have a new government is that they should improve the conditions for the majority. Improve education, improve employment. One person cannot say ‘I should get a job so that my family should live well’. We even have the general public saying ’that one was not rewarded’. Why should they be rewarded? The President owes no one a job. The President should appoint the best of us as citizens. Some of them never did nothing and just lived their lives but they are the best.”

President Hichilema walloped Lungu by a million votes! As US President Joe Biden once observed, it’s the young people that braved the odds to change the government. As such, the President must be in a hurry to reward them immensely by providing them quality education and creating better opportunities for them to create wealth for themselves and the nation at large.

Why do the “nkotes”, who are better off enjoying their pension or slaving away at their farms, want to skip the queue and get the Lion’s share when they’ve had their time?

JOB WELL DONE HH- Dr Nevers Mumba

0

JOB WELL DONE HH.

When ZAMBIANS went to the polls last year, we knew that one of the first things any new government needed to do was to restore our position as a premier destination for global investment.

In order to achieve this, we first needed a respectable place on the global round table and ensure that we were part of the conversation.

We wish to commend President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA for his sustained campaign to market Zambia. Today, we can all see how this sustained effort is starting to bear fruit. Zambia is on the podium, the world is watching, and the world is paying attention and listening.

This is the dream of every progressive leader of a nation; to gain the confidence of like minded nations and be able to transform foreign contacts into economic contacts for investment and development.

On the flip side of the same coin, we are also mindful that the President is doing this against the background of relentless calls for him to curtail his foreign travels. This is in order to save money, as he promised during the campaign period, and of course this is understandably so. We are currently nursing an economy in ICU with a debt burden of over 30 Billion United States Dollars inherited from the previous regime.

In addition, we are mindful of those who are hell-bent on accruing political capital arising from this harsh period of economic transformation to label the President a “puppet of the west”, a “sell out”, and a “puppet of imperialists and multi-lateral financial organisations”.

We wish to warn our fellow ZAMBIANS that this is not a time to play games with the destiny of the country. This is a time for sober, considered, measured and honest introspection in approaching the issues and the process of fixing the economy.

We are happy that this President has not fallen prey to the temptation of suspending these trips which we all know he must undertake if he is to jump-start the process of fixing of the economy, just for him to impress social media critics and in order to appear consistent with a facebook post he may have made.

We know from experience that leadership sometimes requires that you depart from your own previous statement for the greater good of the citizenry.

To quote, President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa who once said,

“In the pursuit of development and justice for all, I would rather do that which is right today, than be consistent with what I believed yesterday”.

This is because as leaders, we are not infallible. We sometimes make statements based on assumption which differ from the actual reality we find once elected. We urge this President to continue being sober, and to apply wisdom and intelligence in achieving the most IMPORTANT objectives, because that’s what counts the most and that’s what he will be judged on, after five years.

In the same vain, we wish to place on record that every leader and every government or nation decides how it will relate with other countries and it’s preferences.

We urge our colleagues in the UPND to ignore those that currently wage a propaganda war against them, calling them “puppets of the west” After all, we have all been called names before, and it is part of politics.

If relating with the west amounts to being a puppet of the west, then surely, those who are waging this war and prefer that we create an East facing foreign policy must also be termed as “puppets of the East” either way, we will have East facing policies or West facing policies competing for the preferred partner with Zambia. What should guide us must be our values as a sovereign nation and how we choose to posture on the global geopolitical stage.

Well done HH. We are back on the global round table.

Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba
President, MMD

HH’s ADDRESS TO EU PARLY – FRAMING THE WAR IN UKRAINE

By Kellys Kaunda

As someone familiar with security diplomacy and the importance of frames in communication, especially as the concept applies to global security, I took note of how President Hichilema framed the war between Russia and Ukraine.

He used both humanitarian and economic frames while, characteristic of his delivery style, repeated the words, “we don’t want war, we don’t want war”.

From a humanitarian point of view, President Hichilema cited the human toll of the war that has needlessly lead to the loss of human life and drove millions away from their homes. Morally, this frame must appeal across every human society anywhere.

From an economic point of view, the President cited the increased prices of food, fuel and fertilizers, something that, once again, appeals to every society, anywhere in the world.

Note that these frames contrast with some of those used at the beginning of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, namely, a proxy war between the US and Russia where the latter was supposed to justifiably stop NATO expansion, that would have imposed a US military hegemony and threatening the Kremlin’s security.

This cold war narrative has been repeated by several countries including South Africa who framed the war in the narrative of the bipolar world of yesteryears.

Frames in security diplomacy have, in the past helped to accelerate arms reduction, disarmament, arms control, the elimination of cluster bombs and landmines.
Framed in humanitarian terms, namely, the impact of cluster munitions on human beings, it became evident that the moral appeal moved otherwise reluctant policy makers to sign up to international conventions that eventually led to banning of some of these weapons.

Before these frames, security diplomacy was characterized by policy makers and military experts that, not only spoke among themselves but also spoke only in terms of military hardware – the number of missiles to reduce, restrict and placed under what kind of protective protocols. That was too abstract to move the needle until the narrative was switched to the impact of military hardware on human life.

So, President Hichilema’s usage of the humanitarian/economic frames as he spoke about the war in Ukraine was not lost on Members of the European Parliament who responded enthusiastically by clapping their hands for extended periods of time.

The Kingdom of Kamwendo

The Kingdom of Kamwendo
By Godfrey Chitalu

The Come When Day kingdom, locally known as Kamwende or Kamwendo was located in a dense forest whose bowels boasted of rich copper, diamond, uranium and emerald deposits.

Because of its remoteness aspirants to its throne were judged not by their craniums but by calf muscles and ability to walk long distances. The founding father’s missionary walks earned the kingdom the name: Nzambi or God. Ever since his demise successful rulers have followed his footsteps.

The next in line, true to the long walk to freedom tradition popularized multi colored Swiss boots. Although citizens complained about his extravagance, they did not know that he was just a staunch traditionalist. A fiery orator and unionist, he privatized all kingdom mines before joining his forefathers. A museum of thousands of size three boots, as he was of a miniature height, can still be visited today.

During the reign of three other rulers, the kingdom grew exponentially as a result of incognito, medical and tourism travels. Unfortunately they all reunited at Embassy Park: one did so while on a journey away while the two within the kingdom. By then the kingdom was opening up to the outside with Nokia phones.

When the sixth ruler assumed office, he was well ahead of others and had read the script that Nzambi’s prosperity hinged on flying than walking. With a private jet, he had the moniker of John Walker for constantly taking the short distance to his jet. His oriental meanderings brought massive investments. He mocked contenders as weak, wobbly and joggerless.

When his rule became untenable for being too airborne, another brave warrior came into focus. He promised not only to sale the bird but to forsake walking and concentrate on rebuilding. After the Gods granted him his wish, elders of the kingdom whispered to him about the real walking motto behind Nzambi. They reminded him that prosperity for the kingdom could only be realized if he became the chief marketer within and without.

As an obedient mortal man, he accepted the challenge to maintain and use the same bird. Now Nzambi is again on the right track or is it truck – cizungu ichi! I’m off to blew sales!

Cornelius Mweetwa is wrong on the 2026 elections- Socialist Party

0

The Socialist Party on the Copperbelt has said UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa should not claim that his party will not face stiff competition in the 2026 elections because he won’t be the only voter.

Mr. Mweetwa, the Southern Province Minister, this week told the Mast Newspaper that UPND does not expect much hustle and hurdles in winning the 2026 elections adding that “honestly can you replace HH with Wynter Kabimba, Fred M’membe?”

Mr. Mweetwa said he was amazed that even politicians that dragged the country into economic malaise wanted to appear as saints who could save it by condemning President Hakainde Hichilema and his government.

But Socialist Party Copperbelt Spokesperson Joseph Kangwa said it is wishful thinking to claim that President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND will be given another mandate by Zambians.

Mr. Kangwa said Mr. Mweetwa’s aim at Dr. M’membe shows that the Socialist is gaining strength and becoming more popular to the Zambian people.

“The Socialist Party on the Copperbelt is alarmed by the demeaning statement attributed to the United Party for National Development (UPND) Spokesperson Mr. Cornelius Mweetwa whose contemptuous comments on our party President Dr. Fred M’membe was published in The Mast newspaper on 21 June, 2022.We are amazed by Mweetwa’s level of thinking to question the Zambian people’s choice on replacing President Hakainde Hichilema with Dr. M’membe. That kind of obscured sentiment on who would be voted president after HH exposes scanty information receptiveness on what is obtaining on the ground,” Mr. Kangwa said.

“The overzealous Southern Province minister’s thinking that President HH will easily win the 2026 general elections as if he will be the only one voting is just building castles in the air. Giving HH another mandate is wishful thinking that myriad Zambians should banish from their minds after being duped by UPND.

It is laughable to hear the excited Mweetwa saying he is very confident that the way President HH has gone ahead in governing this country so far, he does not expect so much hustle and hurdle in 2026. To begin with, what has HH done so far to the poor Zambian people to deserve another mandate? What has he really done differently from the Patriotic Front (PF) administration in terms of governing this country apart from introducing deductible mineral royalties which has little benefit to Zambians who are supposed to benefit from copper and other minerals?” he questioned.

Mr. Kangwa continued:”Apart from augmented fuel pump price which has led to high cost of living among the poor citizens and the increment of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which has no clear guidelines and or policies to guarantee the government recovery of the loans obtained from CDF and the impartial distribution of the same money to the qualified applicants irrespective of their political affiliations? Among all these, the only thing that HH may have done to the people of Zambia is the partial introduction of free education from reception to grade twelve (12) which however, has many hitches.”

Mr. Kangwa charged that President Hichilema is the most unpopular President and could be easily defeated in elections due to his numerous false promises.

“Mr. Mweetwa’s attack towards Dr. M’membe, however, is just a cheap shot. It also proves that Dr. M’membe and the SP are gaining strength, becoming more popular to the Zambian people, to the point that the UPND new dawn government cannot ignore us anymore. It is easy to insinuate that UPND spokesperson may have a short memory to forget that some people used to say HH will never be president but today he is occupying the same office, so will comrade Fred M’membe. Moreover, HH is the most unpopular President and easiest to defeat due to his numerous false promises,” he said.

“Therefore, the Socialist Party would like to advise Mr. Cornelius Mweetwa to look himself in the mirror before criticizing Dr. M’membe, and comparing him with the likes of Mr. Winter Kabimba whose Economic Front party continues to lose many members to our Party because by far Dr. M’membe is better than him in many aspects. If he cannot persuade President HH to humble himself and go back to the people of Zambia and apologize for his fake promises, the interest of the Zambian people would be better served if he would just shut up. The people have the power,” Mr. Kangwa concluded.

We Are Very Serious About Mediocrity And Very Mediocre With Serious Things- Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

WE ARE VERY SERIOUS ABOUT MEDIOCRITY AND VERY MEDIOCRE WITH SERIOUS THINGS

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

Vienna was just voted in as the best city to live in. It has held this rank before several times.
What makes Vienna so peaceful and liveable are the ethics and aesthetics appreciated by its people.

To develop a country, people are not supposed to have a 5 year or 10 year plan. The country needs a 100 year plan in which everyone fits in. Various players can argue in terms of ways to achieve a 100 year plan but not change the 100 year plan.

Now we can’t plan as a country when the majority of citizens are illiterate. When people are not educated, they are unable to plan because they don’t have an overall grasp of what it takes to move a country to greatness.

In a society where the majority remain uneducated or are not exposed, you can’t a an effective democracy because citizens can make a well informed decision on which candidate is better placed to represent them at any level. Democracy in Zambia therefore does not produce the best political leaders. For this reason, the majority of educated Zambians shun politics because educated people can’t make sense to the uneducated in most cases because they are simply at different wave lengths. For educated Zambians who brave it to go into politics, they drop their narrative to suit the narrative of an average voter but immediately change once they get into office.

Democracy as practiced in Zambia also creates a polarised country. People simply don’t understand that have different political views is normal. Supporting different political parties doesn’t make people enemies. But in a democracy like Zambia, people from different political groupings are rivals ready to even kill each other! So countries like Zambia forever remain divided on party lines. A divided country cannot develop because to develop, everyone has to come on board with the 100 year plan that never changes!

If I may ask today. Do Zambians know what democracy is? What is our 100 year plan?

Even if we put street lighting in all roads, the uneducated section of the population will vandalise the lighting. But when you live in Vienna for example, the number of people that are likely to vandalise public property are fewer. So their infrastructure remains intact. In a society where the majority are educated and are exposed, you don’t even need conductors on public transport as the case is in Vienna. People themselves pay to use the transport even when checks for tickets happen once in a long time.

We cannot have fountains in the CBD, clean streets because our population won’t simply appreciate those things. Imagine we even have a relatively large educated population now than at independence but we still think it’s normal to have open sewers, soak aways instead of central sewer systems among other things.

When you look at the discourse ok social media ok Zambia, what gets public attention is gossip, one is arrested, shenzo is drunk, etc. Important things in Zambia don’t trend.

The illiteracy among our educated population is also very worrying. We need an exposed educated population. Imagine educated Zambians think that knowledge from school doesn’t make sense and what is important is practice. Therefore because of not following guidelines, we build substandard infrastructure and half baked economic solutions to the country.

Europeans, Americans, the Chinese travel to much. Learning about Shaka’s cow horn formation or the geography of Canada can never be a waste of time. History repeats itself and knowing the world helps you easily get by. If you have no background about a people, you can’t lead them because you won’t know their nature. That’s why we have to know history.

Unless and until 99% of our population get education and are exposed to the whole world, we are not going to go anywhere. Unless we unite, we shall never go anywhere!!

Keep this message for me and remind me after 20 years! We shall still be in the same place because we are very ”SERIOUS ABOUT MEDIOCRE THINGS AND MEDIOCRE AT SERIOUS THINGS”!

Development doesn’t come by accident. It needs to be achieved!!!!

Thanks 🙏🏿

THE LION AND WARTHOG: A FOLKTALE AMONG THE LAMBA PEOPLE

THE LION AND WARTHOG: A FOLKTALE AMONG THE LAMBA PEOPLE

A folktale is defined as a mythical story told through oral history from generation to generation by people of a particular culture. Folktales are an important part of Zambian culture. Traditionally, these stories were passed down to the young members of the society by word of mouth (oral tradition). Elders would sit the young ones around a fire and tell them folktales as a way to explain certain phenomenon about the world and to also teach them important life lessons.

An example of such a folktale is one which is told among the Lamba people of Zambia. This folktale tells the story of an interaction between a lion and a warthog (a wild pig). This folktale has two central lessons. The first lesson is about the consequences of being ungrateful and the second lesson is about the importance of using one’s cleverness to avoid dangerous situations.

This is how the story goes:

Once upon a time, a lion was caught by the leg in a noose trap that was in a forest. The harder the lion struggled to try and free himself from the trap, the more tightly the trap held him. As the days passed, the lion kept getting weaker because he was unable to go find any food or water. The hunger and thirst had taken a heavy toll on the lion’s body.

After some days, a family of warthogs passed by the place where the lion was trapped. Upon seeing the warthogs, the weakened lion cried out to the warthogs and begged the warthogs to set him free. Out of kindness, the warthogs did help the lion to come out of the trap.

But then after coming out the trap the lion demanded one of the warthog piglets to eat. The father warthog who was expecting to be thanked by the lion was surprised by this demand and very disappointed. Although weakened by his days of hunger and thirst, the lion was still stronger than the warthogs, so the father warthog agreed to give the lion one of the piglets. But before he could give the piglet, the father warthog told the lion that he first wanted to hear all about the trap which had trapped the lion.

The father warthog began asking so many questions to the lion. Questions like; where the trap was lying, how the trap was set, how the trap had caught him and how he failed to come out of it alone. Eager to get his promised meal which was being delayed by the questions, the lion decided to shorten the questioning by simply showing how he had been trapped. The lion began to do a physical demonstration of how the trap had trapped him. In the process of doing the demonstration the lion ended up getting caught in the trap once again.

Upon seeing that the lion was trapped again, the family of warthogs went on its way, leaving the lion trapped as they had found him. “Free yourself if you can”, the father warthog said to the lion as they went away. With no one there to free him, the lion ended up dying of hunger and thirst while trapped in the noose trap.

The most important lesson in this folktale is that when someone helps you, you should not repay that person will evil otherwise you will suffer the consequences of your evil intentions. This folktale emphasizes the importance of being grateful for the good that someone does for you. The other lesson in this folktale is that you need to be resourceful and clever in order to get yourself out of dangerous situations in life that you may have entered into because of your kindness.

As we listen to stories such as this one, it is important to note that folktales should always been seen in their mythical context and not taken as factual narrations of real events. They are merely a part of culture and their role is to illustrate moral teaching to the members of a particular society.

China Outperforms the US in Terms of Perception Among Young Africans

0

According to a new survey released recently by the Johannesburg-based think tank, Ichikowitz Family Foundation, the majority of African youth regard China as the continent’s most influential foreign player.

According to a poll of more than 4,500 Africans aged 18 to 24 years old residing in 15 nations across Africa, US influence has decreased since 2020.

Seventy-seven percent of young Africans thought China was the “foreign actor” with the most influence on the continent. In a follow-up question about whether China’s impact was positive or negative, 76 percent said it was favorable.

Affordable Chinese products, Beijing’s investments in infrastructure development on the continent, and China’s provision of job opportunities in Africa are the top reasons those polled believe China’s influence is favorable.

According to Ivor Ichikowitz, the chairman of the foundation that conducted the research, previous editions of the polls showed that the United States had unquestionably the most influence among young Africans. However, two years later, the scenario is entirely different: China is now Africa’s most powerful ally.

Reasons for this change.

The United States topped the list of the most influential countries among young Africans pre-pandemic because of Donald Trump, its former president. His image as a strong, charismatic leader endeared him to African youths. However, since his loss in the 2020 elections, American influence has waned.

According to the survey, China has surpassed the United States, mostly due to investment. Young Africans are seeing tangible, obvious, and extremely significant indicators of China’s role in Africa’s development.

Despite widespread criticism of Chinese investment in Africa, African governments find it difficult not to respect China since it provides finance, expertise, and markets at a time when Europe and the United States do not.

According to Ichikowtiz, the African Union Commission estimates that over 40% of the world’s youth will live in Africa during the next ten years. China is assisting in the development of one of the world’s largest consumer populations by developing the continent’s middle class.

However, several young Africans were concerned that they were not gaining enough benefits from China’s exploitation of their mineral wealth and natural resources.

Twenty-four percent of those polled felt Chinese investments in their countries amounted to “economic colonialism,” while 36% claimed the Chinese were extracting African resources without adequate remuneration. Another 21% of interviewees believed the Chinese were disrespectful of African beliefs and traditions.

Some expressed worry about Chinese human rights violations in Xinjiang and stated that they preferred Western-style democracy. China has been criticized for the social injustices perpetrated against the country’s Muslim population.

Some young people stated that they do not have a preference between the United States and China because both governments seek profit.

Only 39% of the young people polled believe that a Western-style democracy should be copied. More than half of those polled said that Western-style democracy is not suitable and that African countries need a governing model that is tailored to their needs.

There Is No Alliance Between Us And The UPND- Nason Msoni

THERE IS NO ALLIANCE BETWEEN US AND THE UPND-NASON MSONI

President Msoni responds to the assertions made by the Chairman of the Alliance

Mr.Charles Milupi on the assertion that the Alliance political parties are well represented in cabinet by 5 people who have been appointed to Cabinet.

In so far as matters stand it is only (2) principal Alliance partners who are in Cabinet. And these Include the Chairman himself Mr. Charles Milupi and MDC President Mr Felix Mutati.
Principals of the Alliance cannot be relegated in preference for ordinary members of the Alliance. That’s not how the principles of Alliances ought to function.
And so what is exactly the role of other Alliance partners?

We think that the Chairman shouldn’t justify wrongdoings by the UPND leadership.

In an ideal selfless political arrangement all the 12 Principals of the Alliance must be in Cabinet.

When you decide to work with others you must be willing to share responsibilities with others.

It is obvious to all of us that there is no consultation with Alliance partners who are not in government.
KBF REMAINS A MEMBER OF THE UPND ALLIANCE, THERE’s NOTHING WRONG WITH LAUNCHING HIS OWN PARTY – Milupi

UPND Alliance chairperson Charles Milupi says the alliance has no problem with Kelvin Bwalya Fube launching Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) as a political party because that does not mean he is leaving the alliance.

Commenting on KBF’s announcement that he would launch the ZMP party in August this year, Milupi said the UPND Alliance had no issue with his decision.

“So far, nobody has indicated that they want to leave the alliance. None of the contributing political parties has indicated [that] they want to leave the UPND Alliance. Other political parties want to join us and we have been holding discussions with others. The political landscape in Zambia is very dynamic. First of all, there is nothing wrong with him launching. Until such time he indicates that he wants to leave the alliance, no issues will arise,” he said.

Milupi said ZMP would still continue to be part of the UPND Alliance even after the launch.

“All alliance members including the President himself campaigned vigorously for this government. There’s no one who can be said [that] this one did more than the others. We all campaigned and played our part. We called it the opposition alliance and we changed it in about January 2021 to the name UPND Alliance. So when I say everybody campaigned, the victory is due to all members. Those parties [that] formed membership included the UPND. So let us not elevate anyone above the others. That is not how an organisation works. The alliance is an alliance of political parties and it’s not an alliance of individuals. If you’re talking about Mr Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF), in fact, he came to the alliance with what we call ‘Zambia Must Prosper’,” he said.

“I think he came with it as a movement, it wasn’t a political party but we accepted that. He was the one who came fairly late towards the elections. He came as part of four groupings. There was MDC headed by [Felix] Mutati, Mr [Kaluba] Simuyemba who headed MCE and Dr Earnest Mwansa who headed Zambia We Want. Then Mr Kelvin Fube, who as I say didn’t have a political party but it was a movement. You’re saying he now wants to formally launch his movement as a political party, what impact has that got on the alliance? This is an alliance of political parties. So our understanding is that even if it’s launched, it will continue to be a member of the alliance. So from that perspective, we don’t expect any change.”

Milupi said the alliance had no problem with KBF launching his own party as long as he did not go against the tenets of the movement.

“However, politics is politics. We have had political parties in this movement and some left the movement. Some left the alliance. Sean Tembo was part of this alliance but he left. I speak with authority because I am not only the chairman but the founder member of this alliance. When we formed it there were only four political parties. So I am the founding chairman of the movement. It happened during the difficult time when Mr Hakainde was incarcerated. So others came and joined us and we became bigger. But others also decided to leave. Did it shake the alliance? It became even stronger. We even went further to win an election even when others were leaving. That is a historical fact,” he said.

“So if he is launching a party, we have no problem because it’s an alliance of political parties and not an alliance of individuals. We’re not all members of UPND so if someone forms a party then he is not against. Should they launch and they want to continue being members of the UPND Alliance, we have no problems with that. The only difficulty we would have is if someone launches and goes against the tenets of the UPND Alliance. They will have to examine themselves on whether they want to continue being members of the alliance or they want to pull out. It’s straightforward. As of now, those issues have not arisen.”

Meanwhile, Milupi said the UPND Alliance had enough representation in government, with five members holding senior positions in Cabinet.

“There are members of the alliance who are in Cabinet. I think the last count we had is five members of the alliance are in Cabinet. So what consultation are we talking about? Don’t we use Cabinet to run the government? So if there are five members of the alliance in Cabinet holding senior positions, are you telling me that this government runs without those five being consulted? Are they running those Ministries without having the authority? That’s not the case. The alliance is participating in the government. Others have also been appointed in other positions. Secondly, appointments in public service have not been exhausted,” said Milupi.

“There are still a number of appointments to be done when circumstances are ready. Those that want to be considered will be considered. Others have made a choice that they want to remain on the political side. So there will be people who individually want jobs, maybe they are anxious to have those jobs even when the government is doing it in a methodical manner. You know, you just don’t go and fire everyone and replace. So not all positions have been filled. Not all commissions have been filled. We all campaigned but there is one person who stood for national position and the running mate. So we must not rush for positions. I can say that some of us didn’t go into the alliance for jobs. When we formed this, there were no jobs.” S

I Will Not Stop Talking, Until There Is Sanity In Governance – Kambwili

0

By Correspondent Reporter

I WILL not accept any form of political intimidation by the oppressive UPND government through arrests, PF presidential aspirant Chishimba Kambwili has vowed.

And Kambwili has been granted K50 000 bail by the Kasama Magistrate Court.

This is in a case where he is accused of using hate speech contrary to section 70 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offense are that on dates unknown, but between July 21 and August 8, 2021 in Kasama of Northern Province of the Republic of Zambia, the 53 year old politician allegedly willfully and unlawfully did express words of hatred and ridicule against the Tonga speaking because of their tribe and origin.

When the matter came up, Wednesday, for the explanation of the charge at the Kasama Magistrate Court, his lawyer Chola Chama of Chola Chama Legal Practioners, made an application that Dr. Kambwili be granted bail as the offense he is charged with is bailable.

Resident Magistrate Samson Mumba granted Dr. Kambwili a K50, 000 bail in his own recognizance and two working sureties from credible institutions.

The State applied for adjournment to a later date as it awaits for consent to prosecute from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Yesterday, Dr. Kambwili applied to the Kasama High Court to grant him bail, as police had denied him bond despite meeting the bond conditions.

The matter has since been adjorned to July 7, 2022 as the date for mention.

And speaking to sympathizers upon his release, Dr. Kambwili said he will not be intimidated by a dictatorial and brutal UPND administration through arrests.

Dr. Kambwili said he does not understand why he was transported to Kasama District in Northern Province yet the offense he is accused of having committed was reported in Lusaka.

He said the UPND government under President Hakainde Hichilema was a brutal regime whose interest is to silence critics.

Dr. Kambwili said the selection application of arrests are targeted at killing the PF and instilling fear in those that still believe in the former ruling party.

He wondered why President Hichilema and his government are using worse tactics than those they condemned the PF for, saying the UPND leadership is still in a disbelief of having won the 2021 general election.

“The problem with my brother President Hichilema (Hakainde) wants to do politics as if he is still in the opposition. He doesn’t believe that he won the election and he is President for the country now. That is why he is too scared with the PF, he doesn’t sleep, whenever he hears Pf speak he is frightened and the only way to deal with it is to allow his officers to arrest individuals,” said Dr. Kambwili.

When we formed this, there were no jobs.”

M’membe calls gay support insinuations unjust, cruel

By Fanny Kalonda

SOCIALIST Party president Fred M’membe says

there’s nowhere the party has engaged in any discourse or activities concerning gay rights.
Dr M’membe, in a statement on his Facebook page yesterday, said the insinuations coming “from our colleagues are difficult to understand – they are unjust, unfair and cruel”.

He noted that Zambia still maintains diplomatic and other relations with countries which protect, defend and promote gay rights.

“Most, if not all, European Union countries that Zambia has dealings with defend, protect and promote gay rights. And so is the United States.

South Africa has a Constitution which defends, protects and promotes gay rights. South Africa even allows same sex marriages. The African National Congress defends, protects and promotes gay rights. But the UPND has been seeking a relationship with the ANC. Can one sensibly accuse the UPND of defending, protecting and promoting gay rights by associating with the ANC?” Dr M’membe asked. “The DA which the UPND has a long association and common sponsors with defends, protects and promotes gay rights. Can one by this association justly accuse the UPND of defending, protecting and promoting gay rights?”

He further notes that Zambia has an embassy in Brazil, a country whose Constitution defends, protects and promotes gay rights.
“Should Zambia stop dealing with these countries? Should Zambians stop visiting these countries and stop doing business with their nationals and organisations? Should Zambians stop studying in their institutions? And would it be fair to accuse Zambia and Zambians of defending, protecting and promoting gay rights by dealing with these nations, their organisations and citizens?” asked Dr M’membe. “Similarly, the Socialist Party deals with many political parties and other organisations in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa and Asia which defend, protect and promote gay rights. Defence, protection and promotion of gay rights have never been part of our dealings or memorandum of understanding with any of these political parties and organisations. And there’s nowhere in this country or in any other country where the Socialist Party has engaged in any discourse or activities concerning gay rights. So, the insinuations coming from our colleagues are difficult to understand – they are unjust, unfair and cruel.”

On June 20, 2022, Economic Front president Wynter Kabimba in a letter of suspension to Helen Mulala accused the Socialist Party of associating with LGBT and homosexual movements outside the country.

“I wish to inform you that I am in receipt of information to the effect that you are engaged in activities which are intended to disrupt the stability of the Economic Front as a senior official of the party. I have been informed that you have recently attempted to recruit some members of the EF into the Socialist Party, a party which has association with LGBT and homosexual movements outside the country,” Kabimba wrote. “In view of the above, I have decided to suspend you from the party with immediate effect until your case is determined by the Disciplinary Committee of the Central Committee.”

Zambia can fund mines recapitalisation…without having to borrow or seeking foreign partners says Dr Fred Mmembe

Zambia can fund mines recapitalisation
…without having to borrow or seeking foreign partners says Dr Fred Mmembe

23rd June 2022

Dr Fred Mmembe has debunked the UPND government myth that only foreign partners can revitalise the dilapidated mining sector in Zambia saying the much talked about investment or so-called unlicking can be achieved using local funds and partners.
Dr Mmembe also restated that Zambians could only start getting real benefits from the copper mines in the country after it increases its stake in the mines instead of the paltry shares it currently holds.

“The money for increasing shareholding and revitalising the mines is available in the local pension funds such as NAPSA,” Dr Mmembe said, “you don’t need to agonise to raise a meagre US$50,000 or US$100,000 (about K1,7million) its all here sitting in pension funds.”
The Socialist party President was contributing to a panel discussion at a “sold out” Leadership Conference Foundation (LCF) held at the Pamodzi Hotel on Wednesday.

“All these so-called investors who are basically capitalist who come here don’t use their own money they get the funding from pension funds abroad. We can use the same model here in Zambia without so called investors instead of using pension funds money to build shopping Malls.

The well attended LCF conference, the first since 2014 was attended by heavy hitters from Zambia´s various walks of life such as Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba, Dr Jay Sharma the owner of Jewel of Africa, economist Trevor Simumba, former cabinet minister hon Bob Sichinga, Hot FM owner Oscar Chavula, Ambassador Anthony Mukwita, businessman Cleophas Phiri, Economist Dr Neo Simutanyi and others such as Dr Claver Musumuli.

The general agreement at the conference was that Zambia was being taken for a ride by the UPND administration that seems hell bent on pawning the country’s vast mineral resources to foreigners instead of increasing shareholding in them to benefit the majority poor Zambians.

And Dr Sichinga said it was a pity Zambia keeps passing around a “begging bowl” for debt relief from the IMF and others when the money can be obtained locally taxing the mines more or increasing shareholding.

Dr Mmembe also reemphasized that Zambia under President Hakainde Hichilema is being ruled by “a Puppet government” that is serving western whims and not Zambian interests.

CiSCA Condemns William Banda’s Sexist Remarks against Chishala Kateka and urges UPND to discipline him

The Civil Society Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) has said that it is utterly appalled and disgusted by the patriarchal sexist remarks that Mr William Banda, a senior member of the ruling party, made against the New Heritage Party President, Ms Chishala Kateka.

In a statement released to the media by Judith Mulenga, the chairperson, CiSCA urge the United Party for National Development (UPND) Party leadership to discipline Mr Banda and all men present at that video-taking incident including the video taker.

CiSCA said that the extreme assertion that Ms Kateka is sexually starved hence her lone demonstration holding a placard lamenting hunger in homes is gender-based violence and harassment on his part and the party he thought he was defending.

Below is the full statement

Lusaka, 23 June 2022: The Civil Society Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) is utterly appalled and disgusted by the patriarchal sexist remarks that Mr. William Banda, a senior member of the ruling party, made against the New Heritage Party President, Ms. Chishala Kateka. The extreme assertion that Ms. Kateka is sexually starved hence her lone demonstration holding a placard lamenting hunger in homes is gender-based violence and harassment on his part and the party he thought he was defending. Mr. Banda is clearly unapologetic misogynist! We note that Mr. Banda has never raised these sentiments against male opposition politicians who have equally been raising their voices against the ruling party. We understand why. The male opposition politicians are potential members of the ruling party and their gender is a valued bargaining chip!

By those misogynistic utterances Mr. Banda has violated several parts of our Constitution that recognizes the equal worth of all human beings. In particular, he has broken every part of Article 8 of our national values especially part (d) that speaks to human dignity, equity, social justice, equality and nondiscrimination. Article 60 on political parties does not state that men are better placed to lead political parties because they do not have a proclivity to sexual starvation and hence shall not demonstrate against the ruling party holding placards with messages of hunger! Throughout the Constitution the neutral word ‘person’ is used to refer to human beings.

President Hakainde Hichilema, during his 11th March 2022 speech to the National Assembly, in fulfilment of Article 9 part 2 of the Constitution which compels the Republican President to, ‘Once a year, report to the National Assembly the progress made in the application if the values and principles,’ the President emphasized his government’s concern on how information and communication technologies are being used to among other things, ‘perpetrate hate speech, cyberbullying, fake news, cybercrime and circulation of obscene materials, among other vices,’ He added, ‘It is important that we use these platforms responsibly for the betterment of our nation.’ CiSCA is therefore perplexed that his senior political advisor can shamelessly utter and release such obscenity on social media.

We urge the UPND Party leadership to discipline Mr. William Banda and all men present at that video taking incidence including the video taker. We further call upon the Vice President, Mrs. W. K. Mutale Nalumango to also ensure that the Gender Equity and Equality Commission as provided for in Article 231 of our Constitution is established soon to bring about tangible transformative change in our nation. Let this be one of her legacies. We understand the challenge she and the other 4 women face against 21 men in Cabinet, but we believe that with proper implementation of the constitutional principles our ‘Big Five’ Women can turn this challenge into an opportunity to bring about progress in the needed gender equity and equality in our beloved nation.

WILLIAM BANDA’S SEXIST REMARKS ON KATEKA ANGER PF

WILLIAM BANDA’S SEXIST REMARKS ON KATEKA ANGER PF

Lusaka ~ Thur, 23 June 2022

By Brightwell Chabusha

The “sexist” remarks Mr William Banda made against New Heritage Party president Chishala Kateka who conducted a lone protest against the high cost of living have angered the opposition Patriotic Front.

PF Deputy National Women’s Chairperson Mrs Kavumbu Hakachima wondered the kind of hunger UPND’s Mr Banda wanted the opposition leader to describe yesterday while she conducted her protest.

Mrs Hakachima lamented that women in the country shun politics because of behaviors such as the one “my father Mr William Banda” just exhibited.

She said this in a statement issued to Zambia Reports today.

“You cannot talk to a woman in a manner he has just done because we the women are your mothers. The men in this country must know that without us women, you are not going to be on planet earth and therefore we ought to be respected,” she said.

“This is why in Africa it’s going to be difficult to have a 50/50 situation in terms of politics. Because women are not respected. Women are not valued. What was wrong with what madam Kateka did? Who doesn’t know hunger in this country? So what kind of hunger does my father Mr William Banda want Mrs Kateka to describe?”

Mrs Hakachima called on President Hakainde Hichilema to discipline Mr Banda.

She added that women’s participation in politics is vital and that they ought to be encouraged.

“I think that is being uncultured. My father Mr William Banda is an old man, he is not a youth, no. I want to call upon our President in this country to discipline such behaviors. We know that we have the vice president in this country who happens to be a woman. And because of that, the women must be respected,” she said.

“I think as women in this country, we find this statement very insulting rude and uncultured especially that it is coming from an old man. We want to advise him to desist from making such comments. You an embarrassment to our vice president because she is a woman, you are an embarrassment to the President himself.”

In a video that took rounds on Facebook yesterday, Mr Banda claimed that there are two types of hunger and asked the opposition leader to describe which one she was talking about.

“Njala mulinayo yamunyumba niyamutundu bwanji? Ndipo munyumba muja mufuna vakudya vamutundu bwanji? Vakudya navo vili pambili…so that tizibe, mutiuzeko iyo njala mulinayo chifukwa mwa Hakainde bantu bali na freedom, bakamba vilivonse,” he said.

“Manje kaili njala munyumba ili pabili. Kuli njala yapa nsima na njala ya lekaleka. Manje njala yamene mulinayo imwe niyamutundu bwanji?”

Man slit wife’s throat, played her favorite song and held her hand as she died

0

A Florida man has been arrested after he allegedly confessed to slitting his wife’s throat before playing her favorite song and holding her hand as she bled to death in a bathtub.

Xichen Yang, 21, was taken into custody Tuesday, June 21, on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the brutal slaying of his wife, Nhu Quynh Pham, Altamonte Springs police said.

Police said that just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to an address in the 900 block of Ballard Street to conduct a welfare check.

When the officers entered the apartment, they found Pham lying in a “pool of blood” in the bathtub.

The report stated: “Pham had a deep laceration to the left side of her neck which had blood running down from it. Her stomach was also pooled with blood.”

Paramedics who were called to the home pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police stated that they recovered a pair of pink rubber gloves on the floor and a bottle of cleaning disinfectant.

Yang was not in the apartment when police arrived, but he was apprehended a short time later.

During a police interview, Yang allegedly admitted to slitting his wife’s throat in a fit of rage.

The 21-year-old told detectives that before the killing, “he could feel himself getting more and more angry … and that he could have stopped short of killing her.”

When cops asked the murder suspect why he did not stop himself, Yang replied “that was not how he was raised and that he is the type of person who always ‘goes all the way.'”

The arrest report stated that after Yang slashed Pham’s throat, he took her to the bathroom.

“He placed Pham in the bathroom tub, ‘played her favorite music’ and ‘held her hand’ for what he estimates to be approximately 10 minutes, until she died,” police wrote in the report.

At no point did he call 911 for help, authorities said.

Yang then began to wipe his wife’s blood off the walls and floor, police said.

Detectives subsequently interviewed Yang’s employer at a pool maintenance company, who told them that when he called Yang early Tuesday and asked why he had failed to show up for work, “Yang said he was upset with his wife, Pham, because she had burned his passport.”

When the employer slammed Yang for being irresponsible, “Yang went on to tell him that he had actually done ‘unspeakable’ things and that he killed his wife,” cops wrote.

Yang was previously arrested on domestic violence charges after an incident involving his wife, which took place in January 2022, ClickOrlando reported.

Yang is being held at the Seminole County jail without bond. He is due in court for his initial appearance Thursday afternoon, July 23, followed by an arraignment on Aug. 2.

Coach dives into pool to save US athlete Anita Alvarez after she fainted during World Championships (photos)

American artistic swimmer, Anita Alvarez was in danger of drowning after losing consciousness in the pool at the world championships in Budapest on Wednesday, June 22, and had to be rescued by her coach Andrea Fuentes.

Fuentes, who is a four-time Olympic medallist in synchronised swimming, jumped into the pool after she saw Alvarez sink to the bottom at the end of her solo free final routine.

She was given medical attention beside the pool before being taken away on a stretcher.

It was the second time Fuentes has had to rescue Alvarez after she leapt into the pool during an Olympic qualification event last year and pulled her to safety along with the American’s swim partner Lindi Schroeder.

“Anita is much better, she is already at her best. It was a good scare, to be honest,” Fuentes told Spanish newspaper Marca on Wednesday.

“I jumped into the water again because I saw that no one, no lifeguard, was jumping in. I got a little scared because she wasn’t breathing, but now she’s fine. She has to rest.”

In a statement on the U.S. Artistic Swimming Instagram page, Fuentes said 25-year-old Alvarez would be assessed by doctors on Thursday before a decision was made on her participation in Friday’s team event.

LET HH GLOBE-TROT AS LONG AS IT BENEFITS ZAMBIA

0

LET HH GLOBE-TROT AS LONG AS IT BENEFITS ZAMBIA

The Scoop Editorial: June 22, 2022

WE have keenly followed a ruckus over President Hakainde Hichilema’s trips within and outside Africa of economic benefit to Zambia and their purported drain on our national coffers.

Without apologising to anyone, we would like to state that for as long as these trips are bearing fruits and raking in the much-needed investment through fostering confidence to prospective Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) that Zambia is an investment destination of choice, we have no problem with it.

The only problem we have in this country is that we lack logical discourse on anything and most of us shamelessly talk about things we do not understand and because we are a people who have no interest in reading and researching, we find ourselves parroting about things whose facts we are at sea with.

Just to give a few examples; President Hichilema went to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) not long ago for a two-day working visit and held a series of meetings with his counterpart, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, before the later came to Zambia.

After the last meeting, the two countries signed a historical cooperation agreement to facilitate the development of value chain in electric battery and clean energy sector, among others. Do you know why? The two leaders are forward thinking. They are looking forward to the era of electric vehicles and how the two countries can benefit.

For starters, Zambia and the DRC have up to 80 percent of minerals required for production of electric car batteries and instead of shipping these minerals abroad in their raw form thereby exporting employment opportunities and foreign exchange, they want to do it themselves and export the finished product. Value addition!

That was no all. Few weeks after, and as a result of these engagements, the revenue authorities and all border agencies of both countries agreed to put in place procedures to allow for 24-hour border operations at Kasumbalesa, Sakanya, Mukambo, and Kipushi.

They agreed that in the interim, from 06:00 to 20:00 be dedicated towards entry and exit of trucks and measures should be made at a target of a minimum of 800 trucks to be cleared to exit the Republic of Zambia into the Democratic Republic of Congo. Is this a mean achievement? Can these benefits be compared to expenses for that trip to DRC? Hell no!

Recently, President Hichilema went to Eswatini. During the visit, Zambia and the Kingdom of Eswatini signed two Memoranda of Understanding in the areas of tourism and politics. The first MoU establishes a comprehensive consultative mechanism where the two countries will share information on various issues which maybe political, economic, or cultural in nature.

And for the uninitiated, in Southern Africa, Eswatini was ranked third in tourism in 2020 and generated around US $7.30 million in the tourism sector alone. Most of its tourism inflows come from South Africa and we all know that South Africa is among the best tourism destinations on the continent. Isn’t Eswatini a country worth engaging with on that score?

A few days ago, President Hichilema and his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, facilitated the signing of six Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) toward scaling up the bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

These are in the areas of veterinary and animal health, international relations studies and research, promotion of cooperatives and the MoU between the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) and the Tourism Council Zambia (TCZ), the Kenya Utalii College and the Zambia Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Studies cooperation, and cooperation in the field of information, communication, and technology.

In terms of technology, Kenya is regarded as the second-best innovation hub in Sub-Saharan Africa. Tech start-ups thrive in Kenya, due in part to the ready availability of credit lines and other forms of financing. 2019 was the ninth consecutive year Kenya exceeded the innovation relative to GDP figures expected from middle-income nations.

On the other hand, the World Bank biennial report for 2019 ranked Kenya as the second best country in Africa for providing an enabling environment for agribusiness. So, why should a normal person raffle feathers when their Head of State seeks engagement with such a country? The problem with us in Zambia is that we are used to mediocrity.

Previous trips to Eswatini for example by some Head of State who went with a bloated delegation of a battalion of his friends and chola boys ended at taking pictures with bare-breasted girls clad in animal skins. Nothing else. Years back, we were lied to that free milk and rice was coming from India. To date, we have never seen or tested that milk and rice.

In May 2015, we were again lied to that the Saudi Arabian Government, through the Saudi Fund for National Development, had offered a US $ 20 million revolving fund to supply cheaper oil to Zambia and reduce domestic fuel prices for the next five years. This became a chorus after some Head of State visited Saudi Arabia a few days later. That fuel has never been delivered to this country. It was all lies.

So, as long as President Hichilema continues registering progress in all his travels, he has our backing. As long as he continues moving with a streamlined delegation, the costs will be minimal compared to someone who was moving with his kadansas who had no role in these international engagements.

When and if President Hichilema fails to deliver over these trips, we will be the first ones to remind him that he wasted the tax-payers’ money but so far, so good. And by the way, President Hichilema is our first Republican President to be invited to address the European Union (EU) Parliament.

The EU Parliament is not a kangaroo organisation that can be addressed by anyone. As much as it is a rare privilege for HH to address them, they also look at the calibre of a person addressing them and what value such an undertaking brings to them.

Again, no mean achievement unless you are not privy to the Sixth European Union – African Union Summit of February 2022 as a Joint Vision for 2030.

Those trusting Moonga
maybe they’re naïve – Chama

By Kombe Mataka

PF chairperson Davis Chama says former party central committee member Paul Moonga is a politician that is migratory by nature.

But Chama says those leaving the PF are not joining the ruling UPND because it is deceitful.
“They are pathological liars. And people who have integrity do not want to go to a political party that can lie with the face up. They can lie in the morning, lie in the afternoon and even when they are sleeping and dreaming,” Chama said.

Reacting to the defection of Moonga to the Socialist Party, Chama told The Mast that it was not the first time Moonga was defecting to another party and that only a naïve political party would think he was there to stay.

“You know Paul Moonga. Who doesn’t know Paul Moonga? Paul Moonga at one time left PF and he came back. Go into history of people who are migratory by nature, you will find that he left PF but he came back. So we will not be surprised that even where has gone, he will leave. If people can trust him, then maybe they are naive,” said Chama.

“They don’t understand the kind of gentleman he is. We (PF) are looking for principled people who believe in what the party’s ideology is all about not people who don’t even know what they stand for.”

He said those that were leaving the PF nine months after the party lost power to the UPND knew what was motivating them when the party was still in power.

“If you were supporting the party, there is something that you believed in the party. A few months after losing power then you think all that you believed and campaigned for in order to return power, you suddenly lose interest? Then there is something motivating you,” Chama said.

“If you interrogate these individuals, who are moving how just after nine months of losing power they just want move! If you evaluate the behavioural pattern of a human being and how you can distinguish whether somebody is principled or not, you will realise that there is something motivating them. Personally I can’t move. If I have to move, then I leave politics.”
He alleged that those leaving PF were not moving to UPND either because the party was not truthful.
“No one believes in the political party in power because it is deceitful. That is why people are not moving there. They are pathological liars. And people who have integrity do not want to go to a political party that can lie with the face up. They can lie in the morning, lie in the afternoon and even when they are sleeping and dreaming. Me personally I can’t and they are dealers and capitalists to the teeth,” Chama said.

“I have always said people express their democratic conscious to belong to a political party they think at a time… Even when we were in opposition, not now but during the reign of the late president Michael Chilufya Sata people used to move. Others, we used to Chase them. Remember when we expelled 22 members of parliament the party did not die up to now. People are migrating. You know we live in a country or society where there is this political migration. People move from one political party to another. We are also receiving members. Few days ago Dr Canisius Banda, who was a former UPND vice-president was coopted into the central committee of the party.”

He said there was plenty from the pool that all parties could recruit from.

“There also people that have never participated in politics. You know Zambia has a population of about 18 million people and if you take a sample of about four million people who participated in the last elections in terms of voting who you can deem as politically active…Out of 18 million people you remove four million, you still have about 12 million people who are independent or have not aligned themselves with any political party,” said Chama.

“For us those are the people that are joining us because they have seen what PF has done in terms of transformation of the country under 10 years. What happened under PF’s 10-year rule people are very appreciative.”

DPP appeals against Chitotela’s discharge by the Magistrates’ Court

By Mwaka Ndawa

THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has disapproved the decision of magistrate Jennifer Bwalya to free former minister of tourism Ronald Chitotela from charges of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Last month, magistrate Bwalya discharged Chitotela on the basis that the immunity granted to him earlier by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) exempting him from prosecution was still in force.

DPP Lillian Siyunyi has also opposed the discharge of the seizure notice by magistrate Albert Mwaba which was granted to the ACC for them to seize Bowman Lusambo’s house in Chamba Valley, Lusaka.

Siyunyi, on behalf of the ACC, has lodged a formal protest at the Economic and Financial Crimes Court before the High Court of her intention to appeal the two decisions out of time for reasons that she did not have access to the case records during the requisite period granted to oppose the court’s decision.

“The DPPn(ACC) appeals against the discharge of Ronald Chitotela on May 18, 2022 at the Subordinate Court on two counts of possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. The DPP hereby gives notices that she desires to appeal to the High Court against the Judgement of the Court,” indicated Siyunyi. “The DPP appeals against the ruling of magistrate A K Mwaba dated 19 May 2022 in the subordinate court to discharge the warrant of seizure placed on Bowman Lusambo’s house in Chamba Valley. The DPP hereby gives notice that she desires to appeal to the High Court against the ruling of the subordinate court on the following grounds…”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Court which has been established at High Court level is an appellate court which will hear and determine appeals relating to matters arising from its sibling before the Magistrates’ Court.

However, the appellate court is not yet operational as a jury has not been sworn in to determine cases relating to financial crimes.
On May 18, magistrate Bwalya who was part of the team which was constituted to preside over matters before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court at the subordinate court, exonerated Chitotela for acquiring a house in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill valued at K380,000 and obtaining a K500,000 from Veil Construction Limited through his company RKC Travel and Guide Limited, using ‘illegal gains’.

She ruled that Chitotela’s exemption from prosecution by the ACC dated June 24, 2019 was still in effect, and prosecuting him for possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime when he was let off the hook by the Commission upon forfeiting his property would amount to penalising him twice.

But according to her three grounds of appeal in contest to magistrate Bwalya’s ruling, Siyunyi argues that the trial court erred on point of law by discharging Chitotela when it held that arraigning him before court after a settlement would amount to double jeopardy before invoking section 277 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“The trial count misdirected itself on a point of law when it held that arraigning the accused was tantamount to double jeopardy as provided for under section 138 of the CPC Chapter 88 of the laws of Zambia when no plea was taken before any other court of competent jurisdiction for purposes of trial,” she argued. “The trial court below misdirected itself to go into the merit of the settlement without giving the prosecution an opportunity, notwithstanding that the defence’s submission was anchored on section 138 of the CPC Chapter 88 of the laws of Zambia.”

In relation to Lusambo’s case, the DPP argues that magistrate Albert Mwaba fell into error when he held that both a warrant of seizure and a restriction notice issued under the ACC have the same effect.

According to the Zambian laws the warrant of seizure issued by a court and a seizure notice issued by director general of the ACC have different dates of expiration though they serve the same purpose of restricting the use and transaction of property under investigation.
A restriction notice issued by the director general of an investigative wing of the State and expires after 90 days, and upon expiration, the owner of the property can perform transactions in the absence of a warrant of seizure.

The warrant of seizure issued by a court has no specific expiry date as it remains in force until a matter is disposed of.
Siyunyi argued that the lower court erred in law by holding that the warrant of seizure was irregularly issued, as an affidavit in support was not filed in court as required by law when there is no legal requirement for a warrant to be supported by an affidavit under Zambian laws.
“The court below misdirected itself in law by having recourse to the subordinate court (civil jurisdiction) rules, chapter 28 of the laws of Zambia when warrants for purposes of criminal investigations are governed by the CPC chapter 88 of the laws of Zambia,” said Siyunyi. “The court below erred in law when it pronounced itself on the particulars of the warrant of seizure when the respondent had moved the court on two specific grounds for setting aside the warrant of seizure which specific grounds did not challenge the warrant for being defective in a material particular.”

Last month, magistrate Mwaba quashed the warrant of seizure which gave the ACC grip on Lusambo’s property for being flawed.
Magistrate Mwaba ruled that the affidavit in support of the warrant of seizure had no registry date stamp, which showed that it was taken for signing without being filed before court and was wrongly issued.

He said the document signed by the court as a warrant of seizure was just a mere statement that the properties were tainted, but not a directive to any law enforcement officer to seize Lusambo’s house and it did not serve the purpose it was intended as it was irregular.
“The warrant of seizure does not serve the purpose for which it was intended. Even if it did, it could still not be in order to have both warrants of seizure and restriction notice on the same properties in force at the same time,” said magistrate Mwaba. “For the forgoing, the application to set aside the document which prima facie is warrant of seizure is allowed. The document which was issued by this court as a warrant of seizure on April 13, 2022 be and is hereby set aside.”

SDA PASTOR PREACHES CDF – IS HE POLITICAL?
By Kellys Kaunda

Pastor Shibeleki of Libala SDA Church encouraged church members to apply for CDF and justified it in the context of the Bible which commands human beings to be productive.

Some of the reactions to the pastor’s Bible study echoed his message by encouraging church members to apply for CDF while others, writing on social media, called the pastor’s support for CDF as being political saying “if you want to join us in politics, just say so”.

“Since when did SDA pastors get interested in Governance issues “, another comment said while yet another asked, “is it because the President is your church member”.

Here is my take

From 1982 when l became an Adventist to this day, Just about every sermon l have heard from an Adventist pulpit has been placed in the modern context.

This context is the social, economic, political and spiritual state of the 21st century. Context is key to understanding the Bible and what God is saying to every generation of humanity.

When Jesus preached, he used examples of a sower sowing seed, for example, because he preached to an agricultural community. Jesus expects His followers to place His teachings in the social context of the times.

CDF is an appropriate example to use when preaching the Bible doctrine on working or productivity. In the Old and New Testaments, one finds plenty of references to the need for someone to work.

The Jews took to heart the Old Testament teaching regarding hardwork. It is therefore unsurprising that they are some of the most hardworking people no matter where they are.

There are also a lot of references in the Bible to show how secular rulers must provide for the wellbeing of those they rule. It is therefore not true to equate Pastor Shibeleki’s reference to CDF to partisan politics.

Individual members must be encouraged to work genuinely and access facilities offered by government. It is the church in its official capacity that l would not encourage to get CDF to fund God’s work because the latter is to be accomplished by those that are moved by personal conviction of the love of God.

So my fellow Adventists, go and apply for CDF and expand your territory.

HH’s cherry-picking of KK, FTJ legacies

HH’s cherry-picking

of KK, FTJ legacies

Sam Harris once noted that, “People have been cherry-picking the Bible for millennia to justify their every impulse, moral and otherwise.”
And Bodie Thoene observed that, “What is right is often forgotten by what is convenient.”

Speaking at the first memorial service of Dr Kenneth Kaunda who died on June 17, 2021 held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Friday, President Hakainde Hichilema said Dr Kaunda brought dignity into the presidency.
“I say to my wife every now and then, we never thought that we would sit in the offices KK sat,” he said.

He urged the Kaunda family to keep Dr Kaunda’s name and heritage clean and straight.
“And we make no apologies at all. We do it with pride. To deliver free education because that is what KK gave to us. So, we give to others. Everyone says ulupiya lunono sana, lwingi
(money is little. It’s enough). It’s about education priorities. Within our challenged treasury, we have to decide our priorities so we can do what our teacher taught us. That inheritance that no one can take way from the children. That was planted in our heads that every other child should benefit from. I think we should be proud as a country. Some of us went to school three, four, five years without shoes. But we went to school, [because of] KK,” he said.

“The CDF you are seeing today appearing as a policy position, it was KK. So that Man North, Man South, Man East, Man West, they can make their own decisions with the priorities; the challenges that they face in their locality. Too much money was put in Lusaka and misused in Lusaka. Does the man like that die? In body yes… Fellow citizens, we cerebrate Dr Kaunda for inspiring us all to work hard, to be honest. KK brought dignity in the presidency. We can’t argue about that. He brought dignity into the presidency, that office of the presidency. Representing millions of you. I say to my wife every now and then, we never thought that we would sit in the offices KK sat. It’s a rare privilege that we should not take for granted. That he brought to that office, to unite not to divide, to include not to exclude. KK the teacher, great indeed. To treat everyone in an equal manner, in this our Christian nation, our teacher taught us.”

Next day, on Saturday, during late president Frederick Chiluba’s 11th memorial service at Embassy Park, President Hichilema praised the second president and his courage for liberalising the economy.

“The new dawn government is proud of the vision that president Chiluba had for this country. One of the things Chiluba and his team did was to drive the liberalisation of this country’s economy. Remember one party state: Socialism, Communism, which failed. There is no question about that. Communism and socialism failed,” said President Hichilema. “It did not just fail here, it failed even in the heart of communism. So, when I see advancement of those issues, sometimes I say, ‘do we want to go back to shortages. We heard of the cooking oil, queuing for cooking oil’. When I got married to that lady seated (points at his wife Mutinta) there was no juice in the shops because we married in the late eighties. We couldn’t organise drinks. The Coca-Cola you take for granted today, was not there. So, I remember one of the parastatal leaders called Mantanyani tried to concoct Tip Top to try and take the space of Coca-Cola and Fanta; and even that Tip Top we had to queue to buy a crate or two. We should not lose those memories and start propagating things that can destroy the economy. Dr Chiluba was courageous to move the economy into a liberal sphere, an open economy and almost automatically things started happening. And Coca-Cola reappeared. You who love Coca-Cola, if you were born in the eighties, you wouldn’t have it because it was not there because of the economic policies. So, I think you must learn lessons. We must build one legacy to another and carry on.”

From the above, we don’t seem to understand Hakainde’s position or his political identity.
But we can understand one thing, he can’t let go the very fact that he couldn’t secure Coca-Cola for his wedding! Just as Zambians can’t forget how the privatisation process undertaken by the Frederick Chiluba’s MMD left them destitute. The country has not recovered from the liberalisation programme of the 1990s.

Clearly, as Suzy Kassem advised, “To know the good from the bad, study a man or woman’s history of actions, not their record of intentions.”

Now this strange U-turn from the man who was eulogising KK’s policies the day before! Within 24 hours, Hakainde’s tongue twisted. He embarked on an acidic condemnation of Dr Kaunda’s tenure and policies. So, was he playing to the gallery during KK’s memorial? Who was he fooling – hoodwinking? Why the shift? And for him to praise Frederick’s administration, is he being honest? Is it blackmail? Or is Hakainde under pressure from capital to conveniently praise neoliberalism? Is it that Hakainde has suddenly come under pressure from Socialists and he had to unleash salvo in that manner? What is motivating his shift to praise an administration he strongly condemned? In one breathe he wants Zambians to be innovative while in another he’s mocking past attempts to produce locally-founded products like Tip Top! Why is he distancing himself from the policy programmes of Dr Kaunda that moved him from poverty to where he is today?

We also remember that Hakainde’s first political assault was on Frederick just after taking over the UPND from its founding president Anderson Mazoka. At the height of Levy Mwanawasa’s anti-corruption fight, Hakainde compared Chiluba to a monkey in a maize field. So just because Chiluba is gone, today he has become a champion of liberalization – democracy? We did not expect Hakainde to be this hypocritical so early.
Marcus Aurelius guides that, “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”
While Mahatma Gandhi stressed that, “Never has man reached his destination by persistence in deviation from the straight path.”
