STONES, BLANKETS AND DIAPERS RETRIEVED FROM BLOCKED KAMWALA SEWER-PIPES…
as councillor Hon. Mainda Simataa suggests Zambia adopt eco-friendly Brazilian methods of not flushing toilet paper
=======================================
Kamwala Ward councillor Mainda Simataa says Zambia should adopt Brazilian eco-friendly methods of not flushing toilet paper down the drain, but dispose it in waste plastic bags to avoid stressing old sanitation infrastructure and reduce blockages.

The councillor was speaking following the successful removal of stones, blankets, diapers and faecal sludge that had built-up and blocked most of the new Kamwala residential area for over 3 weeks.

“One of the cultural shocks you discover in Brazil is that there they don’t flash toilet paper, it’s a serious offense. You put it in a plastic waste bag. Even in eating places and city streets like São Paulo, you find 4 bins labeled plastic, paper, glass and bio waste – that’s for food. For 6 months I never saw any blocked sewer.

I think we should be futuristic and move in that direction too, and up our waste management game”.
Meanwhile councillor Simataa has called on residents to exercise civic responsibility and report all sewer openings with broken or stolen covers, and desist from throwing foreign objects in sewer openings because LWSC is heavily understaffed with only 25 sanitation workers to cover the whole Lusaka City.
