ACA Fact-checking Unit has revealed that claims by Director of Media and Spokesperson in the Ministry of Information and Media Thabo Kawana that all Ministers in the New Dawn Administration have declared their assets in accordance with the law are false.

Prior to Kawana’s remarks, Chapter One Foundation bemoaned the low compliance with the Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct Act among Cabinet Ministers and indicated that only a few ministers had filed their statutory declarations of assets, liabilities, interests, and income as required by law.

But Kawana insisted that the Ministers had filed their statutory declarations in “the office of the filer.”

However, according to the findings of the ACA Fact-checking Unit, the Vice President Mutale Nalumango, Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti, First Deputy Speaker Malungo Chisangano and Second Deputy Speaker Moses Moyo had declared their assets.

Meanwhile, Government Chief Whip Stafford Mulusa, Deputy Chief Whip Princess Kasune MP, and Leader of the Opposition Brian Mundubile were among Members of Parliament who had not made their declarations as of 25th March 2022.

The inspection further revealed that out of 25 Cabinet Ministers, only seven had made declarations as of the 25th of March 2022.

Additionally, the study revealed that out of the total of 10 Provincial Ministers, only two had filed declarations as of the 25th of March 2022.

The ACA Fact-checking Unit is part of the European Union-funded ‘Ask Project.’
