Nkandu Luo

WHY DON’T WE TALK ABOUT THAT LITTLE GIRL BORN IN CHINSALI INSTEAD?

No one wants to talk about how a girl born in Chinsali became a Scientist, Professor at the University of Zambia and a Vice Presidential Candidate. No one.

That little girl from Chinsali has a Masters of Sciences in Microbiology and Immunology. She holds the highest academic level award, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Immunology. She has been Minister of Health, Transport and Communication, Local Government and Housing, Gender and Child Development, Higher Education, Livestock and Fisheries.

That is what we should have been telling the rest of the world about her yesterday. Instead, we opted to mock and bully one of the most qualified women in our Country and possibly the region to potentially ascend to the Office of Vice President without even thinking about what message we are sending to our children. Now they will be more focused on how they dress up as opposed to their end of term results because that is more important in our society. We are disillusioned.

Women should have defended and exalted her. Men should have encouraged her. Journalists should have published her life story so that we can read it to our children. You disappoint me yet again, but my disappointment is neither here nor there in the greater scheme of things. Go back to your miserable murmurings while I celebrate that little girl born in Chinsali that might be our Vice President soon. I have daughters.

Congratulations , Professor Nkandu Luo.
