ZAMBIAN DRIVER CONVICTED FOR AIDING AND ABETTING UNDOCUMENTED SOMALIANS

A 43-year-old Zambian driver has been convincted for aiding and abetting three undocumented Somalis.

Sanny Banda of Zanimuone area sentenced to pay a K60,000 fine or nine months simple imprisonment if he failed to pay.

Mr Banda has since paid the money although the truck has been forfeit to the state.

He was arrested on two weeks ago at Mwaiseni Checkpoint in Isoka district.

“The court provisionally forfeited the truck to the state and the forfeiture will be made permanent if the Truck is not claimed within 90 days,” Immigration Department Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka has said in a statement.

Another 43-year-old Zambian truck driver, Simon Makwembe, has been handed a similar fine with two-year simple imprisonment.

“Further, the Livingstone Regional Immigration Office also secured the conviction of another Zambian, Peter Kabwe for a similar offence. He was given a 12 month suspended sentence,” Mr Nshinka added.

“The Isoka, Mpika and Livingstone court outcomes bring the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 6th and 9th March, 2023 to 51.”

104 people are reported to have been arrested for various immigration offences, 16 illegal immigrants have been removed from the country and refused seven foreign nationals entry into Zambia for failing to meet entry requirements.
