Mnangagwa tells exiled Mandi Chimene to come back home

0

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has told exiled G40 politician Mandi Chimene to “come back home” after the former Zanu-PF rivals met in Mozambique Thursday through the facilitation of the neighbouring country’s leader Filipe Nyusi.

Chimene took refuge in Mozambique November 2017 when the Zimbabwe military ousted then President Robert Mugabe and installed Mnangagwa in his place.

A former ally to the late founding leader, Chimene was among some Zanu-PF politicians coalescing under the moniker Generation 40 (G40) who found themselves united by their resistance against Mnangagwa, then vice President, succeeding Mugabe.

The controversial politician met Mnangagwa in Mozambique’s Manica province for the first time in six years with Mnangagwa, considered a vengeful politician, telling his nemesis to return home.

“He said come back home and I said I am coming,” Chimene said with a gay chuckle while talking to state media.

The former Manicaland political heavyweight said caught up with Mnangagwa after Nyusi had suggested she makes time to meet the Zimbabwean leader upon his planned Thursday visit to the neighbouring country for the official commissioning of the newly rehabilitated Machipanda railway line.

Chimene played down her long absence from home saying she was in Mozambique to join her maternal uncles whom she was assisting with farming projects.

“I am here not because I am a refugee. No, I am not a refugee. I am actually a niece here. I am in my uncles’ home,” she said in Shona.

The controversial politician said she would prolong her stay in Mozambique to see through her uncles’ farming projects before she could consider returning home.

She denied ever taking sides in Zanu-PF’s factional wars.

“I was never on any of the sides; both factions were uncertain about my affiliations,” Chimene said, adding that both factions tried to lure her to their camps but she rubbished their advances.

Narrating her escape to Mozambique, the former Manicaland minister of state said she got wind of the coup while at the airport in China November 2017 when “alarmists” told her soldiers had besieged Zimbabwe’s main airport and her home in Mutare.

Chimene said she was forced to change destination for Mozambique fearing for her life.

Chamisa contemplates quitting amidst party turmoil?

0

Sources close to the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) have indicated that Nelson Chamisa was considering quitting the political arena.

This comes after a series of strategic setbacks orchestrated by that party’s secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu.

The internal factional battles and recent events within the CCC have reportedly pushed Chamisa to the brink, leading him to contemplate focusing solely on his legal and religious responsibilities.

According to a well-placed source within the party, “the stress from the ongoing factional disputes and organisational challenges has taken a significant toll on Chamisa. He is seriously thinking about quitting active politics to preserve his well-being and devote himself to his legal practice and religious duties.”

Further insights from the source revealed that Chamisa received counsel from a Southern African President, whose identity remains undisclosed.

The said President advised Chamisa not to abandon his political career but instead bring order to his party, emphasising the importance of establishing a constitution and clear party structures.

Additionally, officials from the US Embassy in Harare and representatives of the European Union allegedly echoed this sentiment, urging Chamisa to stay in politics and seek ways to regain control of his party.

Despite these encouragements, the source disclosed that Chamisa was battling depression and was currently under medical treatment.

His wife, Sithokozile, who was deeply concerned about his health, was reportedly supportive of his potential decision to step back from politics.

“What haunts Chamisa the most is not just Tshabangu’s manoeuvres but the perceived betrayal by key allies like Tendai Biti, Charlton Hwende, and Welshman Ncube, who now seem to back Tshabangu,” the source added.

Political analyst, Edith Mushore said that this development placed Chamisa at a critical juncture, not just in terms of his leadership of the CCC but also regarding his future in Zimbabwean politics.

“The challenges he faces are emblematic of the broader struggles within opposition politics in Zimbabwe, where internal discord and external pressures often intersect, shaping the political landscape in profound ways,” said Mushore.

Amidst this personal and political turmoil, Chamisa is said to be clinging to the hope of a Government of National Unity (GNU), seeing it as a potential lifeline for his political relevance.

Efforts to reach CCC spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi for comments were unsuccessful as his mobile phones were unreachable.

‘Character assassination of Hichilema a fear of Zambia doing better than us’- Zim Former MP

Former Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has slammed what he called the character assassination campaign launched against Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) saying the trolls were showing their fear of his country “doing better than us”.

Hichilema has been facing an unprecedented level of attacks from Zanu-PF officials since the time he assumed the leadership of Zambia in August 2021. He rose from being an opposition leader under the United Party for National Development (UPND) to be the country’s 7th President.

This appeared to anger the ruling Zanu-PF party leading to several attacks on Hichilema who has been branded a western puppet.

With several arrests of politicians in Zambia, Hichilema’s critics are now accusing him of being a dictator. Due to the trolls that are especially dominating social media, Hichilema’s most popular propagandist Joseph Kalimbwe recently threatened to dump his leader.

Mliswa, an outspoken Zimbabwean politician, believes that Hichilema is being targeted by Zimbabweans who are afraid or jealous that Zambia is doing well.

“There seems so much appetite from this side of the country to celebrate and even contrive to create a perception that Hichilema has gone rogue. The level of a dogged character assassination plot betrays an underlying fear of Zambia doing better than us. It’s sad,” Mliswa said.

“Truth be told, HH has done well in the short time that he has been in office. Zambia was already in a bad state prior to him. For starters we have not seen corruption flourishing there. It’s a benefit of selecting a leader who isn’t out to make money. He is monied already.

“He wants order in that country and has generally handled the many traps set for him very well. He is a leader with a good reputation and can’t just throw it away as some would like to frame it. His credentials as a leader are impeccable too.

“As it is, Zambia is far better than most African countries. Having a corporate guru as President will do them good. Only a few rogue elements who seek to fleece a country in connivance with its leaders are angry at his thrift conduct.”

Mliswa was responding to one Dereck Goto who posted that, under Hichilema, human rights abuses and economic challenges were gripping Zambia.

Goto cited the recent arrests of politicians Fred M’membe, the leader of the Socialist Party (SP), Given Lubinda, the vice-president of the Patriotic Front (PF); Mr. Chilufya Tayali, leader of the Economic and Equity Party (EEP) and Raphael Nakacinda, a PF member and Zambia’s former Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba.

“Zambians are increasingly vexed by the insufferable state of their economy, which has rendered the lives of ordinary citizens exceedingly challenging in terms of sustenance.

“A multitude of Zambian nationals has castigated their President, Mr. Hichilema, for his failure to deliver on the alluring electoral pledges he made, asserting that existence has now become intolerable under the auspices of his seemingly unfeeling administration,” Goto said.

“Notably, Hichilema has sanctioned arbitrary detentions of individuals engaging in protests against his government or voicing inquiries concerning the economic downturn attributable to his policies.

“The Zambian law enforcement apparatus has diligently adhered to this pernicious directive, exemplified by the apprehension of Mr. Chalwe Kaume, a radio caller who had voiced his grievances to the Central Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Milner Mwanakampwe, regarding the United Party for National Development’s (UPND) purported inability to fulfill its campaign commitments.

“Mr. Hichilema’s commitment to the well-being of Zambians has been called into question, as he currently occupies the Zambian presidency with the blessings of the United States, which is instrumentalising his tenure to further its interests within the African continent.

“Regrettably, his administration appears to prioritise Western interests at the expense of the Zambian populace. Consequently, ordinary Zambians are experiencing profound suffering, as the nation grapples with escalating impoverishment year after year.

“The prices of essential commodities have surged precipitously due to the perceived inadequacies of Hichilema’s economic policies. Even the white farmers, who had previously flocked to Zambia, have since departed, citing an inhospitable environment for profitable agricultural endeavors.

“Dr. Fred M’membe, the president of the Socialist Party of Zambia, once implored Hichilema to address the exorbitant prices of maize meal, the high cost of living, soaring fuel prices, and the depreciation of the Zambian currency, the Kwacha, only to find himself arrested for this plea.

“The plight of ordinary Zambians is characterised by fear and abject poverty, while Hichilema appears impervious to their cries and has taken minimal measures to alleviate the crisis. Instead, he seems preoccupied with disparaging Zimbabwe, ostensibly in accordance with directives from Western powers.”

He added: “The rash and politically motivated arrests in Zambia reflect the current political turmoil and signal a significant constriction of the democratic space. Opposition parties accuse Hichilema of constricting civil liberties and political freedoms, particularly in the wake of the detention of five opposition leaders on charges of espionage and sedition.

“This quintet had been advocating for African member states to unite against foreign powers that they believed were wreaking havoc on the continent with the complicity of local elites.

“Their arrests serve to expose Hichilema as a true agent of the United States, advancing the agenda of undermining African revolutionary parties and governments. This situation casts doubt on the authenticity of the democracy championed by Western nations, suggesting it may be nothing more than a facade.

“The arrests of opposition leaders and the harassment of government critics are evidently driven by political motivations, thereby revealing Hichilema’s pursuit of a neoliberal agenda and his portrayal as a Western puppet.

“These actions stand in stark contradiction to the promises he made during his inauguration in August 2021, which had guaranteed genuine freedom, enhanced democracy, the restoration of the rule of law, overall order, and the return of the nation to normalcy.

“However, Hichilema’s actions have unveiled a disposition marked by brutality and callousness towards his own citizens, seemingly to appease Western benefactors in exchange for continued financial support.”

Hichilema became Zambia’s 7th President after defeating PF’s Edgar Lungu in democratic elections.

Close friend of Putin linked to missing Ukrainian youngster

0

A key political ally of Vladimir Putin has adopted a detained child from a Ukrainian orphanage, according to documents revealed by BBC Panorama.

Sergei Mironov, the 70-year-old leader of a Russian political party, is listed in the adoption records of a two-year-old girl kidnapped in 2022 by a woman he was married to.

Records show the girl’s identity was changed in Russia. Mr Mironov did not respond to a request for comment.

The child, initially named Margarita, was one of 48 people who went missing from a Kherson regional children’s home when Russian forces took control of the city.

They are among about 20,000 children the Ukrainian government says have been captured by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Earlier this year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin and his children’s rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, for allegedly illegally deporting Ukrainian children to the region.

Territory controlled by Russia, with a view to permanent expulsion. Surname of their own country.

The Russian government said it did not deport Ukrainian children but evacuated them to protect them from war.

The BBC worked with Ukrainian human rights investigator Victoria Novikova to find out what happened to Margarita and the other children.

Ms Novikova prepared a new dossier of evidence for the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine to forward to the ICC.

The 10-month-old was receiving treatment for bronchitis at Kherson’s children’s hospital in August 2022 when a woman wearing a lilac dress appeared. This is when the mystery surrounding Margarita started.

Margarita was the youngest inhabitant of the nearby children’s home, which provided care for kids with health issues or whose parents had passed away or lost custody.

Margarita’s father was absent, and her mother had relinquished custody soon after the child was born.

Her paediatrician, Dr. Nataliya Lyutikova, described her as a happy baby who cherished person cuddles.

The woman in the lilac shirt introduced herself as “the person incharge of children’s affairs in Moscow,”Dr. Lyutikova recalled

Kherson – now back under Ukrainian control – was then in its sixth month of Russian occupation.

Immediately after the woman left, Dr. Lyutikova said she received several phone calls from a Russian-appointed official who had just been put in charge of the nursery. The manager asked to take Margarita home immediately.
Within a week, Margarita was discharged from the hospital. The next morning, nursery staff were asked to prepare the girl for the trip.

“We are very scared, everyone is scared,” said Lyubov Sayko, a nurse at the home.

She described how Russian men – some wearing military-style camouflage pants, another wearing dark glasses and holding a briefcase – came to pick up the girl.
“It feels like it came out of a movie,” she said.

Seven weeks later, Igor Kastyukevich, a Russian military deputy, arrived at the house and with other officials began organizing the deportation of the remaining children, including Margarita’s half-brother, Maxym.

“They took them away from us and executed them,” Ms. Sayko said The video – posted by Mr Kastyukevich on Telegram – shows children dressed in outdoor clothing being carried onto buses and ambulances, then driven away.

“The children will be safely taken to Crimea,” Mr. Kastyukevich said as the children were loaded into the car. Crimea was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. Mr Kastyukevich described the event as a humanitarian mission.

Midnight train For five months, the BBC tried to find Margarita and 47 other children in collaboration with Victoria Novikova.

Finding lost children in a large country like Russia, a country with an area of more than 17 million square kilometers, is not an easy task. The first task is to identify the mysterious woman in a lilac shirt who visited Margarita in the hospital last August.

Victoria discovers a Russian document authorizing Margarita’s transfer to a Moscow hospital for medical examination. A woman is named in the document: Inna Varlamova.

A search on social media confirmed her as the mystery woman in the lilac suit. We then showed Ms. Varlamova’s photo to Dr. Lyutikova and she identified her as the woman who had visited Margarita in the children’s ward.

After further research, we discovered that Ms. Varlamova works in the Russian Parliament, although it is unclear what position, and that she owns a property in Podolsk, near Moscow.

We have solved part of the mystery. But there are still questions.

“Margarita did not need any special examination,” Dr. Lyutikova said of the night the child was taken away. “Why take a child so far. ”

Panorama looks into the fate of around 40 kids who were abducted by Russian authorities from a Kherson children’s home. Collaborating with Ukrainian journalists, the filmmakers unearth proof of a covert adoption, forged birth certificates, and a trail of evidence that reaches the Russian parliament.

With Inna Varlamova’s name in hand, Panorama then obtained train records from Russian sources. These programs show her arriving in occupied Ukraine on the same day witnesses say Margarita was taken from the nursery.

That evening, at 12:20, Ms. Varlamova took the train back to Moscow, bringing with her a return ticket. Margarita, according to evidence, was in high spirits on that midnight train.

A Russian source then provided another important piece of information: a document showing that Ms. Varlamova had recently married political party leader Sergei Mironov.

Mironov, a former paratrooper, is a member of the Russian opposition, leader of the Just Russia Party and a supporter of President Putin.

It has been endorsed by several Western countries, including the UK and the EU.

Then came the big reveal.

I obtained the birth certificate of a 14-month-old girl named “Marina” written last December. The boy’s parents were Inna Varlamova and Sergey Mironov.

The registration was irregular and there were no original documents to confirm the birth of the child.

“Marina’s” birthday is set for October 31, 2021, the day Margarita was born.

“I knew it was ‘Bingo’ when I saw that Marina’s birthday was the same as Margarita’s,” Victoria said.

Our team received information about Margarita’s adoption from anonymous Russian sources. Margarita Prokopenko was renamed Marina Mironova after her stepfather Sergei Mironov.

His birthplace is called Podolsk.

The Russian government said it was not aware of the Margarita case and could not comment.

Earlier this year, when the International Criminal Court indicted President Putin and his children’s commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, the court alleged that hundreds of Ukrainian children had been illegally deported from orphanages and orphanages.

This is beyond “target”.

Deport these children forever from their countries.

This happened after President Putin decided to issue a decree making it easier for Russians to adopt Ukrainian children.

Ms. Lvov-Belov said that Russia only places children in foster care or guardianship.

“We don’t adopt,” she said last month.

“This is a very important fact, because adoption means that the child is completely indigenous. You can change his surname, first name, patronymic [middle name], you can change his place of birth.”

However, in response to our inquiry, the Russian government said it was “wrong” to think that Russia was preventing the adoption of Ukrainian children from newly declared Russian territories. It says that much of Ukraine is now considered part of Russia and that people living there, including children, are Russian citizens.

child together

We have written to Sergey Mironov and Inna Varlamova and asked where Margarita is now, but they have not yet responded.

Almost all other children taken from their homes are believed to remain in Russian hands.

According to Russian authorities, at least 17 people are in Crimea.

Viktoriya Novikova said that everyone had relatives in Ukraine.

Ukraine said it had confirmed that 19,546 children had been taken to Russia.

Fewer than 400 people are reported to have returned.

Russia disputes these figures.

Moscow says it will help reunite children with family or friends if a legal claim is made and the children are recovered. But many parents do not know where their children are, and the process of finding and retrieving them is difficult and complicated.

As far as is known, only one child from the Kherson orphanage was brought to Ukraine.

Last month, three-year-old Viktor Puzik was taken from Crimea by his mother, Olha, while he was awaiting surgery due to his health condition.

She said it was painful to wait for him to be safe.

“I keep thinking where is he, how is he doing? Is he still alive or dead? Everything ran through my mind.”

Victoria hopes to find all the other missing children from the Kherson orphanage, but fears that they will soon be discovered.

“Time is not on our side,” she said.

“The problem is that (Russian authorities) are trying to erase children’s identities by issuing Russian birth certificates and even passports.”

At the same time, she did not give up hope of returning Margarita to Ukraine.

She has not found any relatives to take Margarita in with, so the Ukrainian government has appointed her as the little girl’s legal guardian and plans to petition the Russian authorities for deportation.

“The world needs to know that Margarita exists. They wanted to erase him. We have to bring her back.”

Geert Wilders anti-Islamic populist wins Dutch election

0

Geert Wilders, a leader who is against Islam, has won the Dutch general election by a large margin.

After being in parliament for 25 years, his party (PVV) is going to win 37 seats, which is more than the left-wing alliance.

“The PVV is too important to ignore,” he said. We will lead.

His victory has surprised the government in the Netherlands and it will also surprise other countries in Europe.

However, to keep his promise to be a leader for all people, he will need to convince other political parties to work together with him. He wants to win 76 seats out of the 150 seats in parliament.

In his winning speech, he was ready to fight and said, “We want to lead and. ” we will be in charge. Receiving the seat numbers is a big honor, but it also comes with a big responsibility.

Before people voted, the three other major parties said they would not join a government led by Wilders because they do not agree with his extreme right-wing ideas. But things could be different because he won by a lot.

The group led by Frans Timmermans, who used to work for the EU, got 25 seats in the election, which means they came in second place. This is based on a forecast from 94% of the votes.

He said he didn’t want to be in a government led by Wilders and promised to protect the way the country is run and the laws that govern it. “We will not allow anyone to enter the Netherlands. ” In the Netherlands, everyone is treated the same,” he said to his followers.

This means the VVD party is in third place with a new leader, Dilan Yesilgöz, and a new party made by MP Pieter Omtzigt is in fourth place.

Before the election, she said she wouldn’t be in charge of a government led by Wilders, but she didn’t say she wouldn’t work with him if she won.

Mr Omtzigt originally said his New Social Contract party wouldn’t work with Mr Wilders, but now he says they are willing to take the trust of voters and put it into action.

Wilders winning would surprise Europe because the Netherlands helped create the European Union.

Nationalist and people on the far-right in Europe said they liked what he did. In France, Marine Le Pen, who leads the National Rally, said that this shows that more people are feeling strongly about defending national identities.

Mr Wilders wants to have a vote to leave the EU, which he calls a “Nexit”, even though he knows most people in the country don’t want to leave. It will be difficult for him to convince any important potential partner to agree to that.

He toned down his strong words against Islam before the vote. He said there were other important issues right now and that he was willing to set aside his plans to ban mosques and Islamic schools.

The plan worked well and increased the PVV party’s numbers in parliament by more than twice.

During the campaign, Mr. Wilders used people’s unhappiness with the old government, which fell apart because of a disagreement about asylum rules.

Political scientist Martin Rosema from the University of Twente said that it was one of many advantages that had been given to Mr Wilders in a short period of time. Another thing was that the leader from the center-right who believes in freedom and open markets, said that he is open to working together with him in a partnership.

“He said that we have seen in other countries that extreme right-wing parties do not do well when they are not included. ”

Migration is a big topic, and Mr. Wilders said on Wednesday he wants to deal with a large number of people seeking asylum and coming to live in the country.

Last year, more than 220,000 people moved to the Netherlands, and the number more than doubled. Some of the people moved because they were running away from Russia’s attack on Ukraine. But the problem got worse because there are not enough homes – about 390,000 homes are missing.

At Yesilgöz’s VVD headquarters in The Hague, her supporters were getting ready to celebrate the possibility of having the first female prime minister in the Netherlands.

However, everyone was shocked when the exit polls were shown on the screens, and they gathered around their phones trying to figure out what went wrong.

Ms Yesilgöz became the leader of the centre-right party after the country’s prime minister, Mark Rutte, left politics in July. She moved to the Netherlands when she was seven years old because she had to leave Turkey. Now, she is very strict about letting people into the country.

Some politicians and Muslim leaders say she is allowing the far-right to become more powerful by not saying she won’t work with Geert Wilders.

Ms Yesilgöz, who is 46 years old, tried to separate herself from the Rutte government where she worked as justice minister. However, she was not able to meet the expectations of the people.

Just before the election, almost half of the voters were undecided on who to vote for. Many people may have chosen not to support her.

One Muslim voter in The Hague said that if Mr Wilders wasn’t so against Muslims, they would be interested in him. This shows that some voters are not in favor of Mr Wilders’ views on Muslims.

Before the vote, Mr. Wilders felt confident about his chances and told the BBC. “I believe this is the first time ever in Holland that we have gained 10 seats in the polls in just one week. ”

He knew it would be hard to form a government, but he believed in being positive and winning would make it hard for other parties to ignore him.

Dr Haabazoka speaks out on UPND misplaced priorities

0

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

It’s a bit shameful for us as a country to wait for foreign diplomats to speak out before we cool down! Ideally as a nation we should focus on things that build and not divide us!

– Instead of shooting at children when dealing with smuggling of mealie meal, see a way in which you can empower citizens to export that mealie meal

– Instead of burning Zambian citizens’ camps who are trying to make a living by mining their God given gold, you should clamp down on big firms who run away with millions of dollars in unpaid taxes! A Zambian can never be an illegal miner in his own country!

– Instead of sponsoring factions to destabilise opposition political parties, that money should be spent on uniting citizens so that we tap into the knowledge of each citizen to ensure development in our country. How can the kwacha trade at almost k24 with the abundance of so many resources!

-Instead of chasing after small rental taxes from the already over taxes citizenry, we should be developing ways of benefiting from our God given resources as a source of government revenue!

– Instead of confiscating property from Zambians in the so called unexplained wealth, why not give Zambians assets so that they can create wealth? We are the only country at the moment that believes that it’s only foreigners who can make money in a short period of time and not Zambians! I have heard of civil servants who have Honda fits forfeited to the state and foreigners given a mine for $20m only to make $200m in a year!!

– we are a very funny country! We demolish houses for citizens in their own countries in the so called unplanned construction but fail to build even a single room for the homeless!

– we spend time and money on lawyers in courtrooms but don’t have money to fund small businesses! Even my kid understands that the head of the legislature is wrong! Such a person despite their credentials has failed to run a powerful branch of government! It’s now an embarrassment! Ireen Mambilima would not have behaved in such a manner! Instead of our learned population putting this in order, some are supporting! By supporting such illegalities we are rendering our country into banana republic status! Let’s hit on the breaks countrymen!

We don’t love ourselves! We don’t deserve each other! We don’t deserve our own country! We are foreign to this land! Because we have opened ourselves to criticism! We need to learn from Zimbabwe! Zimbabweans are building mansions while we are filling our court rooms and prisons with people that want to build houses. We need to change! We need to refocus! we should not compete amongst ourselves! We should compete against the whole world!!! Definitely Mainza Chona or kenneth Kaunda did not dream of this Zambia. A Zambia of childish politicians who can meet at a location and declare themselves a leadership of a political party? Politicians who despite going to school fail to defend the constitution that they themselves wrote? A state that is talking about torturing its own citizens?

Who did we wrong to arrive at this? Am deeply concerned! When shall we grow up as a nation? Just look at our social media idols? Those days growing up we would idolise the Dean mungombas, the Nkumbulas! The Lawrence Katilungus! We wanted to be like them! We wanted to make this country great! But today I can hardly recognise my own country!

Our preoccupation should be how to create generational wealth! IMF, France or whoever is heading our debt restructuring thing is wasting our time! $15bn is peanuts for Zambia! Let’s pay off that debt using Sugelite and other minerals! If we give each other tasks, within two years we can pay off whatever we owe! Let’s have an indaba where we can discuss this! This country did not educate us so that we just cheer from the stands!

Have a blessed day

HABAZOKA IN DENIAL TO UNDERSTAND UPND’S ECONOMIC MODEL- Mark Simuuwe

HABAZOKA IN DENIAL TO UNDERSTAND UPND’S ECONOMIC MODEL

By Mark Simuuwe

I have read some article by Lubinda Habazoka, making rounds on social media .

Habazoka , while campaigning for PF in 2021 , giving PF strategies was caught on camera working on how to cheat citizens on the sinking economy and defending overborrowing at that time , said it is difficult for any country to manage to restructure the debt ; when Zambia has managed to get the deal today , he says $15bn is peanut . But he has no solutions just like PF, who have no answers to the mess they created .

He is busy talking of home grown economy which is already UPND’s economic model of avoiding economic centralism by devolution. This is what has made government use CDF as a devolved economic model .

He also seems ignorant as to why we are training SMEs and offering skills training in metal fabrication, General agriculture , Fish Farming , Carpentry, Metal fabrication for free and also free education. Once these are offered , we have human capital growth . This is the formula which helped China under the “big Contract “. They had to improve human capital and created food security using citizens as the main players.

We can now give Agro loans as we have started effective this year as a way of creating micro-economic stability at household level . We are also giving Market booster loans, empowering women , and youth , while conducting SMEs skills training in a graduating manner .

We also now going to have skilled SMEs who will understand running business in a competitive market .

We shall also have an educated community which will be innovative using free education .

We continue opening up for FDI and encourage partnerships with Zambians to stimulate growth , while reducing on capital flight through using home made products in industrial economic zones , to also reduce on the cost of transportation.

This is why we have a $138 million fertilizer plant to produce 300,000 metric tones of Urea fertilizer once at full capacity , and 700,000 metric tonnes of D -compound.

While all these are taking place , we have a robust monitoring mechanism looking at Challenges and successes for improved and efficient undertakings.

My view is that UPND is coming up with an economic model that will require mindset change from PF way of thinking to the 21st century way of running an economy , where you make running of the country as a project tied to specific goals and deliverables.

Right now we are working on mindset change to make citizens understand that an economy must be grown by citizens and growing is a process the same way we grow plants before the yield . And to do that requires many players , with the necessary skills and Identifying the right plants , suitable for the market .

We have no doubt that the path we have taken is a solution to Zambia. We want Zambians to own the economy and be the ones to control the economy.

As to use of Suigilite to pay debt ; Habazoka has not conducted any research to tell the country how much suigilite the country has . Why did he tell PF to do that when he was their advisor but defended overborrowing.

Mining is not like gardening . There are explorations done to ascertain the lifespan and presence of desired mineral.

Habazoka has forgotten that exploration was last done in the 1970s as presented in the National Bidget for 2024.

To this effect , government allocated resources towards conducting a national wide mineral exploration so that we know what we have , what we have exploited already, and how we can exploit the remaining resources in a sustainable way or without depriving the future .

Videos of Munir accusing government minister of corruption are authentic – Witness

A digital forensic analyst has confirmed that the videos downloaded from Facebook featuring Lumezi member of parliament accusing two government ministers of engaging in corruption are authentic.

Bagrey Chanda Sindhowe, a detective sergeant at Police Force Headquarters under the digital forensics department said he is not competent to talk about the events leading to Zulu’s arrest as he did not investigate the case.

This is in a matter were Zulu is facing three counts of libel.

Testifying before Lusaka chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili, Sindhowe said he received a request from the dealing officer to examine two videos relating to the press briefing Zulu held at parliament were he accused two government ministers of being under investigations by the Anti Corruption Commission for graft.

He said he was given links to the videos.

“The links were tested and found to be valid on the internet. The video under the link was the same I downloaded using a Facebook downloader,” Sindhowe said.

The video was played in Court and later admitted as evidence.

During cross examination by Zulu’s lawyer Nkhula Botha, Sindhowe confirmed that he was not suitable to comment about the allegations as he did not investigate the case.

Zulu is in court for accusing two government ministers of having received a bribe from a contractor of the Lusaka- Ndola dual carriageway.

It is alleged in count one, that Zulu published defamotory matter through a press conference which he held on March 3, 2022 alleging that that Finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane received a corrupt transfer of $250,000 from an unknown campany.

It is alleged in the second count that Zulu at the same press briefing, accused Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi of equally received the same amount through a bank transfer.

In the third count it is alleged that Zulu on March 3, 2023, aspersed that Mulchand Kuntawala greased Milupi’s palms with $150,000 so that he could secure the position of Board Chairman for the Road Development Agency (RDA).

According to Zulu, Kuntawala was given his position two days after he made the corrupt transfer.

Trial continues on January 13, 2024.

Bishop John General has been arrested for r@ping a married woman in her matrimonial home

An Urgent Call for Revolutionary New Blood in Zambian Politics- Daimone Siulapwa

An Urgent Call for Revolutionary New Blood in Zambian Politics

By Daimone Siulapwa

Zambian politics is now marred by the presence of tired, old, insensitive, and tribalistic leaders who shamelessly believe this country owes them perpetual favours.

These arrogant players, devoid of any genuine concern for the populace, have employed a myriad of tactics to secure and retain power.

From orchestrating family strife to resorting to violence, propaganda, lies, and even delving into the realms of religion, black magic, and witchcraft, they have spared no arsenal in their quest for political relevance.

Over the last three decades, these selfish and heartless politicians have dragged our nation from bad to worse, all under the guise of democracy.

While chanting the mantra of democratic rights, they have shamelessly looted our resources, constructed opulent mansions, and afforded their children the finest education and jobs in our top parastatals—all at the expense of the struggling masses.

The public display of parliamentary bickering among the ruling and the opposition conceals the disturbing reality that, behind closed doors, these politicians engage in backroom deals, dividing the spoils of our collective suffering.

Recently, a blatant double standard has emerged when comparing the fate of a citizen caught stealing a loaf of bread in Mutendere to that of a politician in kabulonga caught with millions of dollars suspected to be proceeds of crime.

While the former faces a five years imprisonment term, the latter negotiate their sentences, evading the consequences of their grand-scale theft. The question that bergs answer is: What kind of a legal system allows such a glaring disparity in justice?

Why should we allow politicians to only forfeit suspected stolen wealth and escape possible jail sentence while we can’t allow a petty thief to return the loaf of bread he stole to escape a jail term? Your guess is as good as mine; these laws are made by the same looting politicians, they protect themselves.

This plain reality highlights the politicians’ blatant disregard for the people they claim to represent. They remain indifferent to the plight of ordinary citizens, content to watch them succumb to hunger and disease.

In all this reality, politicians remain untouched by the harsh consequences of their policies. When they fall ill, taxpayers fund their treatment in the world’s best hospitals; they remain insulated from hunger, indulging in multiple lavish meals daily. Even in death, they are granted a national mourning that surpasses the yearly budget of a secondary school in Lusaka, and also at a high cost of loss to many private businesses.

Amidst these escalating crises—from food scarcity to a weakening currency and soaring prices—members of our parliament are shamelessly considering a hike in their benefits, they now want a personal to holder car, housing allowance and many more picks paid for by us the citizens.

What kind of insensitive leaders do we have? The clear absence of sacrifice and austerity measures underscores their detachment from the struggles of the average Zambian.

It is time for Zambians to cast aside these worn-out politicians and usher in a new era led by the younger generation. The future belongs to the youth, and it is imperative that they seize control of their destiny.

As long as the political landscape is dominated by individuals accustomed to the luxuries of power, our nation will struggle to develop.

The nation desperately requires a new breed of revolutionary young MPs, individuals who intimately understand the struggles of hunger, unemployment, and economic hardship.

The current crop of politicians, spoilt by the luxuries of parliamentary life, has lost touch with the harsh realities faced by the majority.

They have forgotten how it feels to sleep hungry; they have forgotten how it feels as a parent when you can’t feed your children.

They have forgotten how it feels when you can’t pay your own rent the land lord evicts you. They have forgotten how painful it is when a bread winner can’t find employment.

They have forgotten how it feels when your business has to close down because you can’t afford the cost of business.

They have forgotten how it feels when your wife leaves you because you can’t provide for her anymore; these are the daily tragedies of a common man.

Zambians must look towards the horizon of 2026 as an opportunity for a revolutionary change. A new parliament, infused with virgin MPs unburdened by past failures, presents a chance to reshape the nation’s destiny that we need badly.

We must bring aboard those willing to work and even die for the betterment of Zambia, over the experienced politicians who, for over three decades, have failed to deliver tangible improvements to the people they purportedly represent.

At this critical moment, power must return to the people. The call for a political revolution is not just a desire but an imperative for the survival and prosperity of Zambia. It is time to consign the old politicians to the annals of history and usher in an era where the voice and needs of the people are not just heard but respected.

Power to the people—a rallying cry that must reverberate across the nation, heralding a new beginning for Zambia, void of tribalism and social injustice. The time for change is now, and the youth must be at the forefront of this transformative journey.

ZRA vehicles were given to PF for campaigns, witness tells court

A former administration manager at the Zambia Revenue Authority has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Court that unused vehicles belonging to the authority were given to the Patriotic Front to be used in campaigns prior to the 2021 general elections without following procedure.

Sitali Mulozi a businessman told principal resident magistrate Sylvia Munyinya that Calistus Kaoma who was the director administration at ZRA ordered him to give 22 vehicles to PF through an internal tender following a directive from then Director general Kingsley Chanda.

In this matter Chanda and Kaoma are charged with abuse of authority of office for disposing of 22 vehicles belonging to ZRA without following guidelines and prejudicing government.

Among the vehicles are 13 Mitsubishi pajeros, a Nissan hardbody, a Nissan Tida, Nissan microbus, a Toyota Corolla, four Toyota Hilux, and a Toyota prado.

Mulozi said according to laid down procedure obselete, disused and unservisable institutional property would be disposed of by way of by public auction, disposal by internal tender, disposal by rotary, disposal by donation and also disposal by destruction depending on the type of asset.

“Regards to the disposal of motor vehicles, once schedules are received, I, as secretary would liaise with the chairperson who was at the time Mr Kaoma, and call for a meeting for the assets disposal committee to consider the motor vehicles proposed for disposal,” he said.

Mulozi indicated that prior to 2015, the authority predominantly disposed of motor vehicles by way of public auction.

He said Kaoma had engaged him and informed him that there were numerous complaints from members of staff indicating that they there were unable to participate in the public auctions because they couldn’t compete with externals who had formed cartels to purchase the vehicles at an exorbitant price.

Mulozi said Kaoma guided that going forward from, the committee should recommend an Internal tender as a method of disposing of motor vehicles.

He said once the board approved the disposal, the board secretary Suzyo Ng’andu, would inform the members that approval for disposal has been granted he would circulate a memo to members of staff

The witness said sometime in 2017 Kaoma, asked him if it was possible for non-employees to take part in the purchase of the used vehicles but he guided that it was not possible.

“He then mentioned to say that there were external people who were interested in buying the used ZRA vehicles. At first, he did not mention the names of people who were interested in the vehicles. I told him the only way externals could participate was if we reverted to public auctions. But there would be no guarantee that the interested externals would be ending up to buy the vehicles,” Mulozi said.

“Not long after that discussion, Mr Kaoma called me and confided in me that the externals who were interested in the used ZRA motor vehicles were the then ruling party, the Patriotic Front and that senior officials had sent that request through the commissioner general who at the time was Kingsley Chanda.”

He said Kaoma had told him that the directive to facilitate the disposal of the vehicles was from Chanda.

“I told him that the only way externals would get used ZRA vehicles would be if they bought from members of staff who had bought from the internal tender. This is because it was not uncommon for members of staff to buy internally at relatively low price and those who wanted would sale at a higher price of they so wished,” Mulozi said.

“Mr Kaoma asked if members of staff would be willing to sale after buying internally. I responded and said that it was difficult to g round asking the winners after the internal tender if they would be willing to sell, I told him it would be tedious.”

He said Kakoma guided that when preparing the advert not all vehicles approved for disposal would be advertised to members of staff.

He said he was given a names for members of staff to be awarded vehicles.

“Mr Kaoma then released money in most cases it was above the reserve price of the vehicles. Separately, he left some of the money with me and advised that our clerk deposits the money in the ZRA bank account in the names that he had provided,”Mulozi said.

“These vehicles were being excluded from the advert to members of staff so as to reserve them for the interested externals who in this case were the Patriotic Front party for use in party mobilisation and campaign activities.”

Mulozi added that the exclusion of vehicles is against the ZRA policy that provides for the sell of all the vehicles through internal tender without exception and does not provide for any exceptions.

Lusambo calls on President Hichilema to cut his trip to Europe

Controversial former Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo has told President Hakainde Hichilema to cut short his visit to Europe to attend to the reported ailing local economy.

The Kwacha has been trading between 23.09 and 23.53 against the US Dollar as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reverses the proposed debt restructuring plan for Zambia.

The increasing cost of living compounded by hiked fuel and commodity prices is another issue raising dust in the local economy.

In a media statement, Mr. Lusambo, a critic of the UPND administration, charged that the local economy is in the intensive care unit.

“The Zambian economy is collapsing, President Hichilema should cut short his Euro tour. It is now clear as day that the Zambian economy is in ICU. All key economic indicators have gone south. The poor, who are the majority among us are failing to cope because food prices have hit the roof.
It therefore beats logic why President Hichilema and his Finance Minister could be freely galavanting the world attending fruitless and endless meetings when the country’s economy is melting like a hot knife through butter,” Mr. Lusambo wrote.

“Throughout history, we have seen responsible leaders cut short their foreign trips in an event of a crisis back home. What we have on our hands now is an economic crisis and leadership and a hands-on-deck approach is required.President Hichilema and his economic team at State House have gotten us to this unprecedented economic collapse and should return home immediately to fix the problem or at least show concern,” he stated.

Mr. Lusambo said the local economy is failing after President Hichilema abandoned the economic recovery programme called Zambia Plus initiated by the PF regime.

“In his wisdom, President Hichilema decided to discard Zambia Plus and went to rent brains from the boys and girls in Washington D.C and he has ended up wasting over two years. Now that we are here, approaching the end of 2023 with a collapsing economy and a currency in free fall, we wish to remind Zambians of what we predicted over two years ago.We warned that President Hichilema flirtation with the IMF and the World Bank would never bring about any meaningful economic development for Zambia.”

“When the hullabaloo around Zambia signing a Staff Level Agreement with the IMF reached fever pitch, we wrote and engaged the IMF Country Office demanding full disclosure of the agreement. Our demand was that the UPND government engages the IMF on the basis of full transparency and mutual respect. Our objection to the IMF conditions was premised on the fact that, given our dark history with the IMF, a repeat of the mistakes of the 90s failures would be catastrophic for Zambia,” Mr. Lusambo said.

The dethroned former Kabushi Member of Parliament proposed that President Hichilema call a national indaba on the economy.

“The UPND government elected to ignore our recommendations. Today, after 2.5 years, the much heralded debt restructuring programme is now dead in the waters. China, a key ally of Zambia which was ridiculed, belittled and looked down upon in the whole process has now come back to tell this administration the same things we told them at the beginning. The G20 framework was a flawed process in design and in its implementation. Even us with limited understanding of the global finance architecture could see through this poorly designed framework and predicted that it could not work and true to our projections, we are here and stuck in the waterloo.”

“This should be a lesson to President Hichilema to start listening to voices of reason, he needs to start listening to Zambians. This economy belongs to Zambians and therefore they should have a say in the way it is being run. We therefore call on President Hichilema to immediately convene a national Indaba on the economy that will allow all Zambians drawn from different backgrounds to input into the future of the Zambian economy,” Mr. Lusambo concluded.

Government gives riotous UNZA students second chance

GOVERNMENT has pardoned 18 University of Zambia (UNZA) students implicated in a protest at the institution on September 18.

On the fateful, students at the highest learning institution took to the streets to protest the lack of elections in the students’ Union.

However, the protest took an ugly turning into a orgy of violemce, damage to property and looting.

After investigations, the University management suspended and expelled 18 students.

Education Minister Douglas Syakalima, responding to pleas from parents, extended a second chance to the students but issued a stern warning against any repetition of similar actions.

“I hope this will be the last time. Whether the Bible says 70 by 7 pardoning/forgiving, I am only human; I am not going to follow the biblical way,” he stated.

“You are pardoned. Go back to school.”

The riot, sparked by the cancellation of students’ union elections by university management, led to the arrest of 10 individuals, including five students.

Socialist Party National Youth Secretary Gabriel Banda was apprehended as the alleged instigator and is currently facing court proceedings.

And UNZA imposed a K1000 charge on the students for damages resulting from the September 18 riot.

Syakalima expressed disappointment, suggesting that the students may have been influenced by meager sums to incite the protest, advising against mixing politics with education.

He questioned why students would be swayed by small amounts when they receive allowances.

Syakalima reiterated that students from other countries like Zimbabwe were are working together in order to find solutions to build the country

“Here there is no thinking in the University, the only thing that you can do is to be influenced by a K50,” Syakalima said.

“Why do you want to be influenced by K50 or K200 when you are being paid meal allowances which was never even so.”

He urged students not to take their educational opportunities for granted.

Hudson Sakayi, speaking on behalf of the parents, expressed gratitude to the government for reinstating the students at UNZA following the expulsions and suspensions.

Nickson Chilangwa Appeals for Dismissal of Charges Citing Inconsistencies in State Witness Testimonies

0

In a courtroom drama unfolding at the Kawambwa Magistrate Court, Member of Parliament for Kawambwa, Nickson Chilangwa, has formally requested the dismissal of charges leveled against him, pointing to what he claims are glaring inconsistencies in the testimonies provided by state witnesses.

Mr. Chilangwa, represented by his defense counsel Jonas Zimba, argued that the statements from state witnesses, including a police officer, did not align, highlighting a significant absence of recorded entries in the Occurrence Book at Kawambwa Police Station between August 12 and August 18, 2021.

During his defense, Mr. Chilangwa urged the court to scrutinize the testimonies, expressing skepticism over the reliability of medical reports presented before it. He alleged that these reports were fraudulently prepared as an “afterthought” on August 15, three days after the incident in question occurred on August 12, 2021.

The lawmaker criticized the police for what he deemed an inadequate and unprofessional investigation, asserting that numerous gaps in the state’s testimonies had vindicated him. He urged the court to place more weight on the evidence provided by a former Police Officer in Charge who testified that he did not fire gunshots in the air and that Mr. Chilangwa and his co-accused were not present when the Mahindra vehicle was burnt.

Mr. Chilangwa suggested that his inclusion in the case was politically motivated, citing a state witness, John Lukwesa, who claimed in a recorded video that he was instructed by United Party for National Development (UPND) officials to implicate Mr. Chilangwa and others.

In a surprising revelation, Mr. Chilangwa asserted that the Mahindra motor vehicle, which he is accused of burning, has two different engine numbers. He argued that the engine numbers appearing in the police officer’s photo album and the white book were inconsistent, implying the possibility of two vehicles being involved.

Furthermore, Mr. Chilangwa contended that, according to information in the white book, the Mahindra motor vehicle belonged to an individual named Obed Mulomba, contrary to the indictment and testimonies by state witnesses claiming it was property of the UPND.

Adding to his defense, Mr. Chilangwa informed the court that the police had issued an alert notice to impound the vehicle, alleging its occupants were instigating violence in Kawambwa.

The court adjourned the proceedings in the late afternoon, with the continuation of Mr. Chilangwa’s defense scheduled for today. The case involves Pambashe Member of Parliament Ronald Chitotela and Mr. Chilangwa, along with five others, facing charges of arson, malicious damage to property, threatening violence, and assault.

STOP ALANGIZI TACTICS AND UPHOLD UNITY TO ACHIEVE GENDER AGENDA

STOP ALANGIZI TACTICS AND UPHOLD UNITY TO ACHIEVE GENDER AGENDA

Lusaka (23.11.2023) It is with regret and concern that we as women in the United Party for National Development wish to address the behavior of fellow women in politics, who have resorted to using politics and divisive tactics while neglecting the importance of solidarity and unity among women in decision making positions.

Women in politics need to be reminded that Gender Agenda rests upon the collective efforts of us women in politics who need to position ourselves as leaders, models, advocates, and pioneers of gender equality. However, it is unfortunate that women in politics gathered and overlooked their values and goal of creating a society a society where gender does nit limit opportunities or determine one’s value.

The recent attacks on the Speaker by women in politics during their press briefing is not only regrettable but also undermines the very principles ,we stand for as women.

Resorting to tactics that do not align with the ethos of gender equality and empowerment is a step backward in our collective journey towards Gender Agenda

It is important to reiterate that within the realms of parliamentary proceedings, adherence to constitutional frameworks and guidelines takes precedence over party affiliations. Judging a fellow parliamentarian based on political affiliation, or personal biases does not only derail the discussion but also detracts from the real issues at hand.

Women in politics have a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of their counterparts, fostering collaboration, and nurturing a conducive environment for increased representation of women in decision-making positions.

This responsibility extends beyond mere criticism and delves into constructive guidance, support, and mentorship.

The vision of achieving equal representation, the 50/50 call, necessitates solidarity, cooperation, and a shared vision among women in politics irrespective of their party affiliation.

Unlike resorting to divisive tactics and personal attacks, the focus should be on analyzing situations objectively, providing constructive feedback, and promoting an environment where all voices are heard and respected.

As we navigate the complexities of political discourse, it is important that women in politics uphold the values of unity, respect, and solidarity.

We call upon all women in positions of power to re-orient their approach towards collaborative problem-solving, setting aside differences and embracing the collective responsibility to advance the cause of gender equality and empowerment.

Support Kenya’s Haiti mission, Africa’s growth, Ruto tells EU

0

Kenya’s President William Ruto has appealed to the European Union (EU) to support the country’s bid to deploy police officers to Haiti, even as he urged Europe to support Africa’s quest to unlock its economic potential.

President Ruto said partnerships with African nations were critical to boosting growth and development on the continent.

Addressing the EU Parliament on Tuesday, he said European support would legitimise the effort.

The mission is based on UN resolution, the Multinational Security Support Mission and Kenya is among the eight countries willing to contribute troops to Haiti.

But this has met with resistance in Kenya, even though the National Assembly has already given the green light for Kenya to send 1,000 police officers.

The deployment is subject to approval by the Senate and the provision of Ksh36 billion ($240 million), which Kenya says must be provided by international partners.

The troubled Caribbean nation is ruled by gangs estimated to number around 9,000.

“The Haiti mission will need some 5,000 men and women to address the challenge posed by armed gangs. . . The support from the EU will be instrumental in bolstering the initiative, providing the necessary resources and legitimacy,” President Ruto told the EU legislature.

Promoting long-term peace and stability goes hand in hand with building sustainable economic foundations, Dr Ruto said, and Africa is charting the course for green industrialisation and prosperity so that it can play its rightful role in shaping a better future for all.

For this to be effective, a Europe-Africa partnership must embody a reciprocal relationship based on shared objectives and cooperative efforts, he explained.

“This synergy has the power to drive transformative results for both continents. Concrete, actionable steps are the key to realising this mutually beneficial vision,” he said.

President Ruto also urged the EU to support Africa’s quest for reforms in the international financial architecture. While progress has been made, President Ruto lamented that implementation of the review of the Multilateral Development Banks’ capital adequacy framework has been painfully slow.

“Our path to action is too slow,” he said. “I call on all of us to accelerate and expand these measures – such as with the tax working group we are launching with France at the COP next month,” said the president.

He explained that African economies are constrained by a lack of adequate and sufficient finance and investment. African countries pay five times more for debt “than we would if the multilateral development banks were adequately capitalised”.

He also urged the EU to consider aligning its concessional and multilateral capital with Africa’s climate agenda.

African presidents seeking investment for private projects face both real and perceived risk factors that hinder development on the continent, he said.

“It is about phasing down climate incompatible funding to shift them toward climate action, unlock much more concessional finance and lower risks. Here, I invite the European Investment Bank to play a bigger role in Kenya and on the continent with its expertise and resources,” Dr Ruto said.

Europe, President Ruto told the EU assembly, can draw on its vast experience in human resource development and retraining to reduce youth unemployment in Africa.

He said previous joint efforts had helped create millions of jobs and improve livelihoods across the continent.

“I extend a warm invitation to European companies, institutions, and organisations to explore the many opportunities our continent has to offer,” Dr Ruto told EU.

“Join us in a collaborative endeavour to unearth and develop solutions that leverage our respective strengths, drive innovation and benefit not only Africa but also contribute to global progress.”

Ex-Obama aide held over anti-Muslim abuse at NYC halal cart vendor

0

Police have held an ex-US State Department aide who allegedly spewed anti-Muslim abuse at a New York City food vendor.

Stuart Seldowitz has acknowledged in media interviews that he is the man seen in a viral video calling the vendor a “terrorist”.

He alleged the individual had provoked him by expressing support for Hamas.

The halal cart man, named in reports as Mohamed Hussein, denied to media he made any comments in favour of Hamas.

A New York Police Department spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that Mr Seldowitz had been taken into custody on Wednesday, but said details of any charges were not immediately available.

The BBC has attempted to contact Mr Seldowitz for comment. In the viral videos, he is seen at the food truck at different times of day.

In one clip he says: “If we killed 4,000 Palestinian kids, you know what, it wasn’t enough.”

In another interaction, viewed more than 40 million times, according to X, formerly known as Twitter, he calls the vendor “ignorant”, suggests his family could be tortured by the Egyptian secret police and makes inflammatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad and the Quran.

During another encounter, a bystander is heard saying: “You’re harassing this man.”

Mr Seldowitz says, referring to the food truck vendor: “He likes killing Jews.”

He had a long career in the US Department of State, including in the Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs, and was a White House National Security Council director under President Barack Obama.

The Daily Beast reported on Tuesday that Mr Seldowitz had confirmed it was him in the clips.

“The bottom line is, yes, it’s me,” the outlet quoted him as saying.

He said he thought “there should be some comment back to someone who is endorsing terrorism and the killing of innocent civilians”.

In an interview with City & State, Mr Seldowitz was quoted as saying: “I regret the whole thing happened and I’m sorry.

“But you know, in the heat of the moment, I said things that probably I shouldn’t have said.”

Mr Seldowitz formerly worked for a lobbying company, Gotham Government Relations, which said in a statement on Tuesday that his actions were “vile, racist and beneath the dignity of the standards we practice at our firm”.

A press release issued by the company in November 2022 called him the firm’s “Foreign Affairs Chair”.

But David Schwartz, Gotham’s founder and president, said that Mr Seldowitz hadn’t done any work for the firm for about five years and that the title was an honorary one.

“I am incensed, I am outraged, and I am beyond words,” Mr Schwartz told the BBC.

“This is not the person that I knew, he was very intelligent, he was honoured by the state department and won three awards.

“But when I saw that video, within seconds I knew we had to act, and I did not hesitate. We have severed all ties.”

Many New Yorkers have expressed support on social media for Mr Hussein, the food truck vendor.

New York Mayor Eric Adams posted on X: “Islamophobia is hate. Plain and simple.

“This vile, disrespectful rhetoric has no home in our city. We reject it – and we’re glad to see we’re not alone.”

Mr Hussein, originally from Egypt, told the New York Post he intended to sue Mr Seldowitz.

South Africa, eight others sever diplomatic ties with Israel

South Africa, eight others sever diplomatic ties with Israel

…to protest the bombardment and rising deaths in Gaza

From Aljazeera-22.11.23

“As a people with our own painful history of discrimination, racism and prejudice,” President Ramaphosa said, “let us remember our personal duty to be tolerant and respectful of others.”

South Africa in a milestone move has become the first African country to sever diplomatic ties with the state of Israel as a way of protesting the attacks and occupation of Palestinians in Gaza that has so far seen about 13,500 palestinians and 1,400 Israeli´s d£ad.

South Africa has also called on the International Criminal Court or ICC to issue an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel whom they want to be charged with ´war crimes ‘because of continued deaths in Gaza that includes some 5,500 children as the conflict enters week six.

On X formerly known as Twitter, Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa which suffered its own share of occupation, humiliation and deaths called on the world to act and stop Israel from further occupying Gaza.

“As a people with our own painful history of discrimination, racism and prejudice,” President Rhamaphosa said, “let us remember our personal duty to be tolerant and respectful of others.”

He added that, “let us (South Africa) promote dialogue and meaningful engagement so that, as South Africans, we may work together to support the realisation of just, peaceful and secure future for the people of both Palestine and Israel.”

South Africa in its bold move joins eight other countries that have cut diplomatic ties with Israel in protest Palestinian bombardment which include:
Bolivia, Chile, Turkey, Colombia, Bahrain, Chad, Honduras, and Jordan as world-wide pro-Palestinian chants rise from Pakistan, New York to Downing Street.

In a recent United Nations General Assembly vote to garner support to cease fire and cessation of hostilities, Zambia abstained when some 120 countries voted for a cease fire angering local leaders such as Dr Fred M’membe of the Socialist Party Zambia who said ´abstaining ‘or ´running´ away equals to ´supporting´ the ´massacre´ of Palestinians by Israel.

IS HOPE FOR PEACE AROUND THE CORNER?

The ´good news´ however, is that Qatar has managed to negotiate a ´humanitarian pause´ or ´cessation of hostilities´ between Israel and Palestine that starts on Thursday from 10am-4pm.
During the pause humanitarian aid shall be allowed to enter Gaza as Israel and Hamas exchange 15 prisoners each, mostly women and children held by both sides.

The UN is elated at the humanitarian pause which they hope to use to save lives in the besieged West Bank and other parts of Gaza where thousands face starvation and sickness.

Meanwhile some three journalists covering the war d!ed in Israel hostile fire on Tuesday, not as collateral damage, according to media reports bringing the number of dead journalists since Oct. 7 to just over 42.

Aljazeera is the only international media reporting on the war from within Gaza as others fear death.
It is not known how long the temporary hostilities shall hold but the fact that the killing shall subsidies has cheered the UN and its 18 agencies that have been calling for an end to the deaths.

French dealer faces legal battle for buying African mask at $158 and selling it for $4.4M

0

A French second-hand dealer is facing legal action after allegedly tricking a pensioner couple into selling an African mask they found in their ancestor’s home for €150 ($158), only to later sell it for a staggering €4.2 million ($4.4 million).

The mask, originally from Gabon, carries historical significance as it was discovered in the estate of an ancestor who served as a colonial governor. In 2021, the pensioner couple sold the mask to the dealer, unaware of its true worth. It was only after an auction six months later that they realized its significant value.

As the case went to trial, the government of Gabon formally requested a halt to the proceedings and the return of the mask, according to the BBC.

The story unfolded when the couple, who are in their 80s and residing in central France, enlisted the services of a dealer to clear their vacation home near Alès. The property once belonged to René-Victor Fournier, a colonial administrator from the early 20th Century.

During the cleaning process, a wooden mask was discovered in a cupboard. The dealer claimed he had no knowledge of its significant value when he initially purchased it.

In March 2022, the elderly couple learned about an auction in Montpelier, where they found out that the mask they had sold was a rare 19th-century “Ngi” mask created by the Fang people in Gabon. The auction catalog indicated that it had been collected around 1917 by Fournier, albeit under unknown circumstances.

The rare “Ngi” mask from the Fang people in Gabon, estimated to be one of just 10 created by Fang masters, gained exceptional attention. An expert even compared its rarity to a Leonardo da Vinci painting. Initially valued at €300,000 by the auctioneers, the mask ultimately fetched a staggering €4.2 million from an undisclosed buyer. Subsequently, the couple initiated a civil case in an attempt to void the sale.

The Gabonese government has contended that the mask was originally stolen and should be repatriated. They’ve requested the court to postpone its decision while their complaint is under consideration.

In 2020, the French parliament voted to return valuable artifacts looted during colonial times to Senegal and Benin. France currently holds around 90,000 African artifacts, the majority of which originate from sub-Saharan Africa.

THE MUSOKOTWANE /KALYALYA ECONMICS ARE ANCIENT THEY WILL KILL THE LITTLE ECONOMY WE HAVE AT THE MOMENT.

Again ba Finance Minister Hon Musokotwane and Ba BOZ governor Ba Kalyalya are proving to be outdated in their approach to managing the economy.

Today the Dollar is at K 24 and experts predicts it will get to K30 by January and the BOZ has adjusted the Reserve Ratio in trying to stop the depreciation of the Kwacha .

The truth is that the move will not do anything to address the depreciation but what it will do is to basically crowd out all the money available for banks to lend to the private sector.

Look guys, the economy should be driven by the private sector but what Ba Musokotwane is doing is to kill the private sector by removing money that the private sector can borrow from Banks to pump into their businesses. They believe that there is too much money around and people are buying too much dollars thats why the dollar is appreciating out of the demand and so they have resorted to stiffle the citizen by crowding out Liquidity so that even the little liquidity that will be available for borrowing will be too expensive and no one will be willing to borrow .That will completely kill the already dead private Sector .Lets face it,is there any money today in circulation that ba Kalyalya wants to remove out of circulation??isnt every Zambian broke today??

I will tell you this and u will remember me ,the Economics of Ba Musokotwane and Ba Kalyalya is oudated and they will Kill the Little economy left already.

We must be looking for other solutions to arrest the depreciation of the Kwacha and exports would help but what are we going to export if you are killing the private sector.

Anyways am not an Economist this is the little i have learnt from the streets.

TIME TO CHANGE THE WAY WE DO THINGS WE NEED FRESH MINDS IN LEADERSHIP AND AM READY IF YOU NEED ME .

Dying Economy Puts Hichilema In Desperate, Draconian Survival Mode- Fred M’membe

DYING ECONOMY PUTS HICHILEMA IN DESPERATE, DRACONIAN SURVIVAL MODE

We have warned before that Mr Hakainde Hichilema is not going to de-escalate the tensions and abuses of state power and the administration of the criminal justice system.

The shrinking civic and political space, criminalisation of dissent, and all forms of human rights violations we are witnessing today are all deliberate and a product of desperation.

Equally, the impunity and senseless brutality, disregard for the rule of law, and the grand corruption and looting of state resources and funds that are currently on display are deliberate.

But why this extreme paranoia and brazen abuse of the criminal justice systems, law enforcement, and other institutions of governance? Why this insatiable appetite for violence, corruption, and chaos?

Well, Mr Hichilema and his league are fully aware that they lack the demonstrable ability and intellect to understand the state of our economy and social political situation, and thereafter, superintend or engineer a workable and sustainable economic and political transformation for the country.

In fact, it dawned on this corrupt regime that they will not manage to transform this economy and ultimately guarantee a prosperous and sustainable survival of the people just after a year and a few months into their term of office. Mr Hichilema and his league know that they have no solutions to this country’s economic woes and have now resolved to become tyrannical and authoritarian in their quest to retain power beyond 2026.

All these draconian intentions and actions; the violation of our constitutional order, human rights abuses, detentions and torture, abuse of the judiciary, parliament, the police and other institutions of governance are calculated at boosting Mr Hichilema’s chances of securing a second term in office.

They know that there is absolutely nothing they will do to turn the economy around and improve the livelihoods of our people so they’re in a survival or political self-preservation mode.

They want power at all cost even when it’s clear that there is nothing they’re doing currently to warranty their continuity of their leadership at this point. They just want power for the sake of it. They want power for selfish reasons. They want power to protect their commercial interests and their corrupt business networks.

This is the reason they’re so desperate and determined to instal a full-blown dictatorship and make this country an outpost of senseless tyranny.

Its the same reason Mr Hichilema wants to change the Constitution to perpetuate his stay in office by removing the 5-year presidential term limit and introduce a 7-year term as well as remove the 50% + 1 to revert to First Past the post electoral system to avoid a rerun, which he fears he can’t win.

The signs are clear that they are not going to stop the spread of brutality, ethnic bigotry, division and tyranny in the country and that they will increasingly become desperate as we get towards the end of their term.

We therefore need to stand together and resist the tyranny and oppression that has taken hold in the country. This road to destruction and chaos Mr Hichilema is leading us to must be stopped because nobody is prepared to be enslaved, maimed, abused and tortured just to feed Mr Hichilema’s ego, hatred, vengeance, tribalism and extreme thirst for power, money and control.

We must, by all legitimate means necessary stop this madness and take action to restore order, stability, prosperity, and democracy in our country.

One bad term doesn’t deserve another, aleya!

Revoke Makebi’s practicing license, Miles Sampa asks LAZ

PF president Miles Sampa has lodged a complaint against Lusaka-based lawyer Makebi Zulu to the Law Association of Zambia for professional misconduct.

Sampa wants Zulu’s license revoked by the legal practitioners committee of the Law Association of Zambia as he is a sell out.

The Matero member of parliament has accused Zulu of breaching the lawyer-client privilege for ditching him for Edgar Lungu after the 2014 disputed PF convention.

Sampa said just like Judas Iscasriot had traded Jesus for 30 pieces of silver Zulu has done the same by trading information about his personal life which was shared to him by virtue of their relationship.

In his complaint letter dated November 21, 2023, Sampa said he had dragged Lungu to court for dribbling him during an intra- party elective conference in Kabwe.

Sampa said he challenged Lungu’s installation as PF president in the High Court and he was represented by Sebastian Zulu, Sakwiba Sikota and Makebi Zulu.

He said Lungu was represented by Lewis Mosho and a Mr Chasi.

Sampa said he entrusted his lawyers including Zulu with the most confidential information and by law he is guaranteed that his former advocates will not act against him and leak confidential information to his opponents.

“In the premises, I have noticed with dismay that Makebi Zulu Advocates who represented me in similar matter against Edgar Changwa Lungu has now switched sides and now representing my opponent against me, and my confidential information obtained under seal of professional confidence is likely to be leaked to my opponent which is against professional ethics,” Sampa said.

He feared that Zulu’s switching of client allegiance was in conflict of interest.

“This committee will agree with me that this matter is of political nature that may contain the most confidential information in order to pursue such matters as such is given to our lawyers,”Sampa said.

“Whether the matter is contentious or not, there is the possibility that the information obtained under the seal of professional confidence may become relevant to the matter at hand. In 2014 when Messrs Makebi Zulu Advocates acted for me, he obtained a lot of confidential information which he is prohibited now to disclose, and it was with the same parties of Edgar Lungu lead faction.”

He said a client should be able to have confidence that their secrets are safe with their lawyer.

Sampa lamented to the legal practitioners committee that Zulu might let the cat loose

“The legal profession has a code of conduct where rules and principles are set that regulates the conducts of all legal practitioners in Zambia and which all the members of the profession must adhere to and failure to this, this committee has jurisdiction to discipline that member,” Sampa said.

“Mr Chairman, Makebi Zulu Advocates has breached the rule of confidentiality in that he has switched from representing me in 2014 in a similar matter with almost the same facts to acting against me as a former client.”

He said the matter was sensitive and Zulu has demonstrated that he cannot be entrusted with information.

“The practitioner’s name may be struck out off the roll, not by way of second punishment but because he is not a proper person to practice the legal profession,”said Sampa.https://kalemba.news/…/revoke-mekabis-practicing…/

WOMEN’S PROBLEMS STILL BIG, BEMOANS SABOI

WOMEN’S PROBLEMS STILL BIG, BEMOANS PRESIDENT SABOI

…as she reveals that women are not spared in terms of the bad things that are happening in politics

Lusaka, Tuesday, November 21, 2023 (Smart Eagles)

Leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has lamented that problems that women in the country are grappling with are many.

President Saboi Imboela said when she and other opposition female leaders addressed the media today that women are not spared in terms of the bad things that are happening in politics.

“As women we thought it is important that we start addressing women issues as a collective. We have seen that as political parties we have started coming together to talk about issues that affect the nation. But women issues you’ll find that they are unique to women,” she said.

“The problem of women in countries like ours they are still that big and that is why you see every time we have women issues in this country we try to support each other as women. Because we understand that the women are very few.”

She also said when women are seen to be performing worse than men in certain positions, “we” shall not keep quite.

“So the few that are there need support. But again we understand that the few that are there, when they are in various positions, they are not there for only them, they are there for others. So it is important for the country to know that in as much as we support women, when our women do wrong things, we are also there to say no this is not true, this is not right, don’t represent us like that,” she said.

“The reason why we believe in women leadership is because we believe that women can do so much. Women can perform better in certain positions. So when we see women performing worse than men in certain positions, trust me, we shall not keep quite.”

She added that “women are not spared in terms of the bad things that are happening in politics. We are being victimized, we are being harassed day in day out. And they don’t just do that in our political spaces, they come to our homes. So they don’t just victimize us as politicians, they victimize our children as well.”

Nawakwi taken to court for threatening the lives of the Hatembo siblings and holding them hostage

0

Nawakwi in Court over the Hatembos disappearance in 2021

FDD leader Edith Nawakwi will today be in court accused of threatening the lives of the Hatembo siblings and holding them hostage.

The former minister of finance is alleged to have captured Pheluna and Milner Hatembo in attempts to brand President Hakainde Hichilema who was in opposition then as their hostage taker following a land dispute between the parties.

The Hatembos disappeared after High court judge Catherine Phiri threw out the matter in which they sued President Hichilema on allegations that he fraudulently acquired farm no. 1924 in Kalomo district Southern province which belonged to their late father.

Judge Phiri ruled that the case was statute barred as the siblings could not rely on fraud to reverse the hands of time.

The Hatembo’s vanished immediately they lost their case and the opposition leader who labelled the President ‘evil’ for abducting the siblings indicated that he would be arrested when filing in his nomination papers for the 2021 poll.

However a video later emerged on social media where the Hatembos claimed that Nawakwi was their captor and that she threatened to put an end to their lives.

As a result of the Hatembo’s revelation Nawakwi has been indicted for two counts of threatening violence and two counts of abduction with intent to confine a person.

It is alleged that the opposition leader between September 1, 2020 and August 31, 2022 whilst acting together with other persons unknown with intent to cause injury or alarm, threatened to kill Pheluna and Milton Hatembo when she said “I will kill you by chopping your head if you tell anyone whatever I discuss”.

Nawakwi on the same dates abducted the Hatembo siblings from Choma to Lusaka with intent to secretly and wrongfuly confine them against their wishes.

The accused whose case has been allocated before magistrate Amy Masoja is expected to take plea on November 21, as she was not before Court.https://kalemba.news/…/nawakwi-in-court-over-the…/

Dr Cephas Mukuka Resigns From The MMD

0

MUKUKA RESIGNS FROM THE MMD

Ranchdale ,
off Government Road,
Lusaka.

ALL MEDIA HOUSES.

On 02/11/23 in the morning, I had a progressive and mature meeting with the MMD President, Dr. Nevers Mumba.
The meeting was held at his residence in Lusaka.

The main purpose of this said meeting was to remind him of my earlier intentions of leaving the party.

As a matter of fact, I should have resigned from the party in 2020 but was restrained and discouraged from leaving by the MMD Vice President Administration, Ms Winnie Zaloumis .

Madam Zaloumis and I met at her residence.I was accompanied by Mr Wellington Chilufya, who remained in the car as I discussed with Madam Zaloumis .

From 2020, I remained vigil and extremely observant as events around the party unfolded.
I knew that my decision to resign was final, but I did not want to look unguided, so I decided to hang around .

For the record ,i first met Dr. Nevers Mumba in 1997 through a friend of mine, Pastor Nathan Nkama, who at that time was an employee of the Zambia State Insurance Corporation Limited at Premium House.

My first work station in the bank was on the same premises as Zambia National Commercial Bank still has a branch there.

A few years later, Nathan, the current speaker of the National Assembly Hon Nelly Mutti, and I found ourselves in Kabwe at the Kasanda Grounds.
Dr. Nevers Mumba had his first political rally there.
Nathan and I got a lift from Ms Mutti, who equally drove us back to Lusaka after the rally.

At a national conference in Ndola, I was elected as the Treasurer General of the then National Christian Coalition, which later transformed into the National Citizens Coalition after an observation from members of the public.
I then became the first democratically elected Treasurer General
of the NCC .

I could not continue with the NCC because I got elected as Vice President of the Zambia Union Of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers,ZUFIAW,this was in 2001.
After 2 years, I got elected as President of the prestigious and powerful ZUFIAW following a vacancy in the Presidency.
I served as President for 10 years and only left in 2013 following constitutional battles within the institution.I became the first youngest and longest serving President in the history of the Union.

The same year, that is 2003,I won elections as the Assistant National Executive Secretary of the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia,FFTUZ,a national centre like the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions,ZCTU.

The above activities were taking place at a time I had just registered a church by the name of Prince Of Peace Ministries right in Lusaka; i as well sat on the following boards as director,Zambia National Commercial Bank, Zambia National Building Society and the Pensions and Insurance Authority.

In 2008, I resigned from the FFTUZ after 5 solid years of good service.
Along the way, I further decided to leave the bank, and this was in 2016 in December, aged 47 years, having worked for 26 years of unbroken service.

The Managing Editor of the New Vision Newspaper Mr Mabvuto Chipeta invited me to be writing politics every week on thursday in a column I called ,the corner of justice.
This was in 2017 in January, and I had to stop in December of the same year following an invitation from Dr .Mumba to serve in the MMD.

In 2018, I accepted to join hands with Dr .Mumba as a party spokesperson .This was amidst serious confusions ,legal battles, and political intra party fights. At the Congress, I got reelected in the same position .

When Dr. Mumba formed the Reform Party,I held no position in the party but highly interacted with him by virtue of my position as Union President in high profile meetings and gatherings.

Today, 19/11/23, i have decided to resign from the MMD after serving 5 hard years due to the reasons mentioned above .
This is after serious time of praying, reflecting , retreat, consideration, and self introspection. My consciousness is clear and at peace.
In doing so, I wish to thank Dr. Mumba for the political exposure and opportunity to serve under his leadership in various capacities and positions.
I proudly served as Treasurer General, in the NCC, Spokesperson, and acted as Deputy National Secretary in the MMD, respectively.
I as well was a member of the 8 member Politburo of the MMD,which meets to recommend and sometimes decides in between National Executive Committee meetings and National Conferences.
I am proud and grateful for such golden opportunities and will forever be glad that I served under Dr. Mumba s leadership.

This comes barely 3 months of my other resignation from the Prince of Peace Ministries, as Overseer, the church I founded in 1998 .
I remain chairperson with a new Overseer Prophetess Grace Pule.

Allow me also to show gratitude to the entire MMD fraternity for the trust and confidence bestowed upon me whilst in the party.

I am further asking for forgiveness from all those I may have offended in a way or another during my course of duty.
Those in the party and outside the party; at an optune time, I shall announce my next move as I am ready hot for future openings and opportunities.

Aluta continua,beer lahai Roi,rehoboth.
I thank you.

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT ON THE RECRUITMENT OF 3000 HEALTH WORKERS COUNTRYWIDE

0

PRESENTED TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

BY HON. SYLVIA T. MASEBO, MP

MINISTER OF HEALTH

November, 2023

Madam Speaker,

First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude for according me this opportunity to update the nation through this August House on the status of the 2023 net recruitment of 3,000 Health workers countrywide.

Madam speaker,

The vision of Government in the health sector is “A nation of healthy and productive people.” To attain this vision, it implies that Government working closely with key stakeholders should put in place a robust an

d resilient health system that will facilitate the attainment of national targets, global sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and Universal Health Coverage, Leaving No One Behind.

Madam Speaker,

I am pleased to inform the House that the New Dawn Government has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the health system through the increased annual budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Health.  The House may wish to recall that the budget allocation to the health sector has i

ncreased over the past three years from K9.2 billion in 2021 to K12.4 billion in 2022 and now K16.1 billion in 2023.   The increased budgetary allocation is necessary in order to address the challenges such as unstable supply chain, obsolete medical equipment, inadequate infrastructure and inadequate staffing levels.

Madam Speaker,

The House may wish to note that over time, we have made notable progress in terms of construction of health infrastructure as a country. Currently there are a total of 3,581health facilities across the country of which 3, 419 are GRZ and 162 are faith based.  The House may further wish to note that not all these health facilities are operating at full capacity.  Most of them are operating at different levels of service delivery.  These health facilities include specialised hospitals, tertiary hospitals, second level hospitals, first level hospitals, health centers and health posts.  The failure to operate at full capacity has been attributed to the limited fiscal space that has resulted in the number of positions not being funded over long periods from the time the organization structures were approved by Cabinet Office.  I wish to reiterate that, the investment in health infrastructure has been informed by a number of factors that include; population growth and the changing disease patterns.

Madam Speaker, while appreciating the increased number of health facilities which aim at promoting access to quality health care as close to the family as possible, the shortage of healthcare workers in these facilities continues to be a concern for government as it counters government efforts to attain the desired health goals.

Madam Speaker,

A competent and adequate health work force is the nerve centre of every resilient health system and is key to achieving universal health coverage.  However, there are a number of health workforce challenges that include but not limited to the following:

  • critical shortages in the supply of health workers;
  • an inadequate mix of skills in the workforce;
  • inequitable geographical distribution of health workers; and
  • gaps in their competencies, motivation and performance.

Addressing these major health work force challenges is therefore crucial to strengthening the healthcare system and building a robust health system that is resilient to disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

Madam speaker,

Currently, there are a total number of 3,581 approved health facilities across the country representing an establishment of 139,590 positions, out of which 72, 697 positions are filled. This accounts for 52% filled up positions while 64,276 remain unfunded representing 48%.  These facilities include grant aided institutions (faith based).

Madam Speaker,

As at 30th September, 2023 the construction of an additional 233 new health facilities had been completed.  These additional facilities will result in the creation of a total of 7,276 additional positions to be operationalized and this will result in an increase in the establishment from the current 139,590 to 146,866 and further increasing a staffing shortfall from 64,276 to 74,187.  Therefore, in order for the Ministry of Health to reach 100% staffing capacity, it shall require a total of seven billion six hundred and forty-eight million four hundred and eighty thousand six hundred and fifty-one Kwacha ninety Ngwee (K7, 648, 480, 651.90) per annum to operationalise the 74,187 positions.

Madam Speaker,

The House may wish to recall that, during the Official Opening of the Third Session of the Thirteenth National Assembly on Friday, 8th September, 2023, His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema the President of the Republic of Zambia pronounced and assured the nation that, the recruitment of 3, 000 health workers will be undertaken as budgeted for in the 2023 budget estimates. This is a build-up on the landmark recruitment of over eleven thousand (11,000) health workers in 2022. Following the Presidential Pronouncement, the Ministry of Health working closely with key stakeholders commenced the process to ensure that the 3,000 health workers are recruited in a transparent manner and are equitably distributed across the country.

Madam Speaker,

In order to be inclusive and transparent in the 2023 net recruitment, Government through Ministry of Health has consulted with key stakeholders in the sector so as to build consensus on the mode and criteria to be used in the recruitment process.  This approach involved:

  1. Receiving submissions from Provincial Health Offices and health facilities on the priority areas to be considered;
  2. Meeting with the Public Service Management Division, Ministry of Finance and Civil Service Commission to discuss the recruitment process; and
  3. Holding consultative meetings with the following professions associations: (a) Zambia Medical Association; (b) Biomedical Association of Zambia (c)Zambia Institute of Environmental Health; (d) Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia; (e)Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation; (f)Midwifery Association of Zambia (g)Clinical Association of Zambia; (h) Resident Doctors Association; (i)Nutrition Association of Zambia; (i)Radiological Association of Zambia; (k)Zambia Society of Physiotherapists; and (l) Zambia Dental Association.

Madam Speaker,

Following the consultations, stakeholders resolved to take a two-fold approach to the recruitment which the Ministry would start with:

  1. promotion of In-service staff; and followed by
  2. recruitment of new entrants thereafter.
  1. Promotion of In-Service Staff

Madam Speaker, this House may wish to note that the past recruitments had always focused on new entrants. This has created stagnation in career progression among most health workers and in some cases contributed to demotivation and poor performance among health workers who remained in same positions for a long time and also those that have been assigned administrative roles in higher positions without receiving commensurate pay.

Therefore, starting with processing promotions for in-service health workers, will not only result in the creation of vacant positions for the new entrants but most importantly, this will motivate the staff who have held same positions for a long time and will allow for optimal performance while at the same time strengthening retention system in the health sector. The transfer by cadre and cascade effect are as follows:

Madam Speaker,

In line with the National Decentralisation Policy, the promotions of in-service staff will be conducted through the respective Health Facilities District Health Offices, and Provincial Health Offices.

  1. Recruitment of new entrants

Madam Speaker,

The recruitment of the new entrants will be conducted to fill up the created positions following the promotions. In order to ensure transparency in the recruitment process, the recruitment of new entrants has been decentralised to the district and provincial levels. To this effect, the Civil Service Commission has advertised for the recruitment of 3,000 health workers as per the Conveyance of Treasury Authority No. 7 of 2023 dated 27th September, 2023.

You may wish to note Madam Speaker that, the closing date for receiving applications was Friday, 22nd September, 2023.

Madam Speaker,

The received applications will be screened through a transparent and accountable process as follows:

Firstly, the Human Resource Sub-Committees at District Level will shortlist and select candidates based on a prescribed criterion.

Secondly, the selected candidates will be validated at provincial level by the Human Resource Management Committees.

Thirdly.  the selected candidates at provincial level will further be validated for quality assurance by the National Technical Committee comprising officials from the Civil Service Commission, Public Service Management Division and Ministry of Health before the publication of the successful list of candidates in the print media.

Madam Speaker,

Some key activities such as granting of Treasury Authority by Public Service Management Division, advertising for the recruitment of 3000 health workers by the Civil Service Commission and receiving of applications by Provincial and District Health Offices have been implemented.  The process of promotions and transfers of in-service staff has reached an advanced stage in that Ministry of Health has completed the exercise and forwarded to Civil Service Commission for finalisation.

Madam Speaker,

The roadmap for the remaining key activities is as follows:

  • Screening, shortlisting and selection of applicants by the Human Resource Management Committee and Human Resource Management Sub-Committee is expected to be completed in the month of November, 2023;
  • Recommendations of selected candidates to Human Resource Management Committee by the Human Resource Management Sub-Committee is expected to be undertaken in the month of November, 2023;
  • Validation and recommendations of selected candidates by the Human Resource Management Committee is expected to be completed by in the month of November, 2023;
  • Validation and processing of the recommendations of successful candidates by the Civil Service Commission, Public Service Management Division and Ministry of Health is expected to be completed in the month of November, 2023;
  • Publication of successful candidates in the print media, website, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and Community Radio Station is expected to be undertaken the first week of December, 2023; and
  • Issuance of appointment letters to successful candidates by Public Service Management Division, Provincial Health and District Health Offices is expected to be done in the first week of December, 2023.

Madam Speaker,

As indicated earlier, the 2023 recruitment of health workers is being implemented in two phases starting with the promotion of in – service staff and followed by the recruitment of new entrants.  In order to ensure that suitable candidates are promoted and recruited, the Civil Service Commission has since directed that the recruitment process for health workers be halted until further notice.  In addition, the Commission has directed the Provincial Administration to ensure that, in the meantime, the application documents are maintained at the Districts to be submitted to the Province t the opportune time.

Madam Speaker,

I wish to conclude by saying that while the Ministry is operating at 52 percent filled up positions in the current establishment, the recruitment of health workers is a continuous process towards attaining an ideal situation.

In order to match up the skilled-staff to patient ratio, my Ministry will continue to lobby for Treasury Authority in order to attaining staffing sufficiency for improved quality health service provision and for better health outcomes and ultimate national productivity.

Madam Speaker, I thank you.

Great honor to deliver the keynote address at the Zambia-Italian Business Forum in Rome today, where a total of 34 Zambian companies, under the auspices of the Zambia Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Zambia Development Agency, participated in the exchange of views between the two countries’ business potential.

We encouraged Italian companies to explore opportunities in agriculture, energy, mining, infrastructure, health, and tourism that were in abundance in our country.

Considering the interconnectedness of the global community, we urged businesses to collaborate as a team, transcending bureaucratic boundaries and segregation.

Recognizing that Italian businesses possess advanced technology and capital, while we boast critical mineral endowment, we emphasized the crucial importance of fostering mutual partnerships that benefit both countries, through top-notch technology, innovative solutions, and accessible capital.

We anticipate tangible transactions resulting from the forum and encouraged businesses facing challenges in setting up companies in Zambia, to bring them forward for resolution.

STOP THE INJUSTICE TOWARDS DEFENCELESS WOMEN – KATEKA

21st November 2023

New Heritage Party President Chishala Kateka says the UPND government’s injustice towards defenceless women should stop.

Ms Kateka stressed that such actions that pressure women into wrongdoing, are unacceptable and create fear for those in the public service, when they are being intimidated into submission. She was speaking at a press conference organized by women of opposition political parties at the New Heritage Party Secretariat in Lusaka this morning.

She specifically raised issue with the recent questionable removal from office, of the former DPP Lillian Shawa Siyuni and the recently ‘surrendered’ Registrar of Societies Mrs Thandiwe Phiri Mhende, complaining that this was an unfair treatment of women.

“What was the woman supposed to do in that position?” She quipped, referring to a subpoena that was issued to the former Registrar of Societies, “should she have sat on that information? Or listen to her bosses?”

“Where is the justice in what has been done to that poor woman?” She pointed out that the effect of that injustice, has Mrs Mhende’s career disrupted. Mrs Mhende was fired after obeying a subpoena to produce opposition Patriotic Front party’s current office bearers registered with the Registrar of Societies.

Ms Kateka’s concern is that these actions by the UPND government will erode people’s confidence in the system when government employees fail to do the right thing for fear of being fired or mistreated.

“What message are you sending to other government workers? Don’t do what is right?” She asked. “You are putting fear in the public service.

“It is not right to use a whole system to fight a young lady who cannot fight against you.”

Ms Kateka encouraged fellow women to stand up to such mistreatment of women and urged fellow women to join in solidarity. “This is something that women need to take up. What are we saying? Why are we quiet? We need to speak up for those amongst ourselves who are being downtrodden. It is not right.” She said.

The women from opposition political parties were compelled to speak out against several events that have irked the public including the ongoing issue with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Nelly Mutti, the detention of Mumbi Phiri, the firing of the DPP and the Registrar of Societies among other concerns.

COURT CORNERS FAKE LAWYER, SHUTS HIS FIRM

By Dickson Jere

Killian Mwiinga is no stranger to the Zambian Courts. This time around he took out an action in the High Court on behalf of his “client” whom he was representing under the guise of “Power of Attorney”. But then he is not a qualified lawyer!

He stylishly appeared before the High Court Judge with his client even when there was an objection that he was not lawyer to represent a client. He argued that it would be injustice to his “client” if he was stopped from representing him in Court as his agent. While this case was on, it was discovered that Mwiinga also appeared in two other cases acting for his “clients”.

The Judge In-Charge at Lusaka Charles Zulu heard the matter and took time to underscore the rationale behind the law that allows qualified lawyers to take up matters in court on behalf of their clients.

“It is plain and ubiquitous that Killian Mwiinga is one of the busy bodies abusing our court processes for a living, through the illegal use of power of attorney to use in his name on behalf of ‘absentee litigants’”, the Judge observed.

“There is no room for compromise, especially where there is conscious abuse of court process by unqualified persons pretending to be advocates, or indirectly practicing law,” the judge added.

The Court stated that only those who have studied law and passed the Bar Exams (ZIALE) with a practicing certificate can appear before the courts on behalf of clients.

“The Court cannot play possum to imposters preying on suspecting litigants or colluding with potential litigants to circumvent the prohibition and restrictions under the Legal Practitioners Act,” the Judge said.

He then dismissed the matter commenced by Mwiinga for being an abuse of court process and ordered that the fake lawyer should his illegal law firm should be closed forthwith.

“And to strongly admonish the perpetrator to immediately shut down his illegal chambers,” the Judge ordered, and asked the client to commence fresh action in his name.

“If the courts were to allow the status quo to prevail, the results would be similar to the disorder and anarchy of allowing unqualified persons or misguided busy bodies to carry out clinical operations and procedures in hospitals and clinics, based on some rudimentary knowledge,” the Judge opined.

Case citation – Killian Mwiinga v Emmanuel Chama and Others – 2023/HP/0505. Ruling delivered yesterday 20th November, 2023.

This is very important case as it deals with the escalating problem that has engulfed the law profession by importers who have set up illegal firms. They take money from unsuspecting litigants under the guise of “Power of Attorney” and yet they act as lawyers.

Mwiinga will be luck if he does not get caught by the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) special committee recently appointed to deal with this scourge by way of prosecution. Law schools are still open for those who want to be lawyers!

He just wasn’t a manager’ – John Obi Mikel explains what Avram Grant actually did at Chelsea

| Sam May | November 21, 2023 |

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel says Avram Grant ‘had absolutely no clue’ when in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Nigeria international spent 11 years with the South West London club under eight different managers, including Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.

But one boss who does stick in his mind, however, was Grant, who took charge of the Blues during the 2007/08 season following Mourinho’s shock departure.

“For me, he [Avram Grant] just wasn’t a manager,” Mikel told ex-teammate Florent Malouda on the The Obi One Podcast.

“He wasn’t a manager because he [had] no clue of what he was doing. He absolutely had no clue.

“He [had] someone who does the training and someone who does the training – and all he does is come in and tell us stories about Michael Jordan and a fire that is burning somewhere.

Grant managed a win percentage of 66.67% in a season that saw Chelsea miss out on the Premier League title by two points and lose the Champions League final on penalties to Manchester United.

He was sacked days after the season concluded but Malouda suggested it was a good call as he backed up Mikel’s claims.

“Yeah, I agree with you,” Malouda replied.

“I remember in training when he tried to lead the session, he realised he did not have that skill so he had to find a guy who had that skill.

“But, I would say when you look at the results, we reached the Champions League final.

“At the time, he knew [his limitations] and he knew what he needed to help him, because management is not easy – even if you are experienced, it is very, very hard.

“So, I think he did well, because he was not experienced but he still did the job.”

More than 200 mobsters jailed in one of Italy’s biggest mafia trials

0

More than 200 defendants in one of Italy’s biggest mafia trials for generations have been sentenced to a total of more than 2,200 years in jail.

The three-year trial saw individuals allegedly linked to the ‘Ndrangheta sentenced for crimes ranging from extortion to drug trafficking.

Those sentenced included a former Italian senator, though the verdicts can still be appealed.

The ‘Ndrangheta is one of Europe’s most influential criminal organisations.

The case illustrated the mob’s broad influence over the politics and society of southern Italy. Experts said the convictions of white collar workers, including local officials, businessmen and politicians, showed the far-reaching impact of organised crime on Italian institutions.

Among the most notable people to be sentenced was Giancarlo Pittelli, a lawyer and former senator for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi’s party Forza Italia. Pittelli received an 11-year sentence for collusion with a mafia-type organisation.

Others convicted included civil servants, professionals across various industries and high-ranking officials, who were critical to the ‘Ndrangheta’s success in infiltrating the legitimate economy and state institutions.

More than 100 defendants were acquitted.

The judges presiding over the case were put under police protection over fears for their safety

Originating in the impoverished region of Calabria, the ‘Ndrangheta is considered one of the world’s most dangerous criminal organisations. It is estimated to control as much as 80% of Europe’s cocaine market.

The gang boasts an estimated annual turnover of around $60bn (£49bn).

The trial was held in a call centre on the outskirts of the town of Lamezia Terme, converted into a high-security courtroom equipped with cages to hold the defendants and large enough to hold some 600 lawyers and 900 witnesses. Charges included murder, extortion, drug-trafficking, loan sharking, abuse of office and money laundering.

Over three years, proceedings demonstrated how the Calabrian syndicate extended its reach across continents, eventually operating as far afield as South America and Australia. Its members infiltrated the local economy, public institutions, and even the health system, rigging public tenders and bribing local officials.

The trial, the largest of its kind since the 1980s, saw judges examine thousands of hours of testimony. Former mobsters turned collaborators with the justice system testified about the activities of the Mancuso family and their associates, who wield extensive control over the province of Vibo Valentia.

The Mancuso family, from the town of Limbadi, are one of the most powerful of the 150 clans which make up the ‘Ndrangheta.

Anna Sergi, a professor of criminology at the University of Exeter, said: “This trial confirms convictions of classic mafiosi, sentenced for offences traditionally more associate with criminal activities, such as extortion or drug trafficking.”

She added: “However, it is important to note how the different types of people involved, including white collar workers, provide a more comprehensive view of the entire province and the connections between various mafia clans.”

Most of the defendants were arrested in December 2019, following an extensive investigation spanning at least 11 Italian regions, which began in 2016. Approximately 2,500 officers took part in raids targeting suspects in Vibo Valentia, an area primarily controlled by the ‘Ndragheta’s Mancuso clan.

More than 50 former mafia members agreed to cooperate with the trial, among them Luigi Mancuso’s nephew, Emanuele.

Their testimony shed light on the inner workings of one of Italy’s most powerful mobs. The trial revealed that ‘Ndrangheta members allegedly concealed weapons in cemetery chapels, used ambulances for drug transportation and diverted public water supplies to grow marijuana.

Those who opposed the organised crime group faced grim consequences, including finding dead puppies and goat heads left in front of their houses, torched cars and vandalised shop windows.

“This first round of sentences demonstrates how challenging it is to combat the ‘Ndrangheta due to its political, economic, and financial connections,” Antonio Nicaso, a writer and organised crime expert, said. BBC News

Liberia election: Vehicle rams crowd celebrating President-elect Boakai’s victory

0

At least three people have died and about 20 others are in hospital in Liberia after a vehicle rammed into supporters of President-elect Joseph Boakai, a medical official has said.

The police described the incident as an “accident”, but Mr Boakai’s party called it an “act of terrorism”.

It came just hours after Liberia’s electoral body declared him the winner of last week’s presidential election.

In his concession speech, President George Weah had called for unity.

It was a closely fought election, with just over 20,000 votes separating the two candidates in the run-off poll.

On Monday evening, Mr Boakai’s supporters were celebrating the official announcement of his victory outside his Unity Party (UP) headquarters in the capital, Monrovia.

There are conflicting reports on the time of the incident, but witnesses place it at some point in the two hours after 21:00 local time (21:00 GMT).

“[The vehicle] just picked up with speed and ran into the supporters,” UP spokesman Mohammed Ali told the AFP news agency.

The driver is reported to have abandoned the vehicle near the party offices before fleeing. The police have launched a manhunt.

Angry onlookers set the vehicle on fire.

Eyewitnesses told the Liberian Observer newspaper that they initially thought the incident was caused by a brake failure, but the driver’s sudden take-off fuelled suspicions of a planned attack.

“We did not hear anything because the music was playing… I don’t really know where the car came from. I just found myself on the ground,” Bendu Kiadii, one of those injured, told the Reuters news agency in a hospital trauma ward.

In a statement, the police called what happened “an accident incident” and urged UP supporters to “remain calm” while investigations were under way.

Dr Sia Camanor, the chief medical officer at Monrovia’s John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, said that three people had died of their injuries, while 18 are still being treated. Some are in a critical condition.

Dr Camanor appealed to the public to come forward to donate blood, as some of the victims had lost a lot of it.

She added that four other people had been taken to another hospital for treatment, but she did not have details of their condition.

In an earlier statement, the UP called what happened a “devastating, wicked and barbaric act of domestic terrorism, leading to loss of precious lives”.

The incident followed an election that was deemed largely peaceful, save for some isolated violence in four provinces.

The UP said it was cancelling all celebratory gatherings until further notice.

Israel recalls its ambassador from South Africa

0

Israel has recalled its ambassador in South Africa “for consultations”, Israel’s foreign ministry has said.

It follows the “latest South African statements” on Israel, ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat said on X without giving specifics.

South Africa has been highly critical of Israel’s military operation in Gaza.

On Monday it urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by mid-December.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said failure to do so would signal a “total failure” of global governance.

The recall of Israeli Ambassador Eliav Belotserkovsky comes just before South Africa is due to host a virtual summit of the Brics group of nations, which includes China and Russia, on the Israel-Hamas war.

The meeting to be chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hopes to draw up a common response to the conflict.

Also on Tuesday, South Africa’s parliament is expected to vote on whether to close the Israeli embassy and suspend all diplomatic relations until Israel agrees to a cease-fire and commits to negotiations facilitated by the UN.

The governing African National Congress has agreed to the motion but whether the party or the government will support it in parliament remains to be seen.

Israel launched a major military campaign in Gaza in response to a cross-border attack by hundreds of Hamas gunmen on 7 October, in which at least 1,200 people were killed and about 240 others taken hostage.

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says at least 13,000 people have been killed in the territory since Israel launched its retaliatory campaign.

The UN Security Council has called for “urgent and extended humanitarian pauses” for “a sufficient number of days” to allow UN agencies to safely enter the sealed-off territory.

South Africa, which has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, has been critical of the nature of Israel’s response which it has described as “collective punishment”.

Israel has said that it is acting in self-defence and its aim is to eliminate Hamas and prevent another attack like the one last month happen again.

South Africa, along with Bangladesh, Bolivia, Comoros and Djibouti, has submitted a referral to the ICC to investigate whether war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed in Gaza.

South Africa has recalled its diplomats from Israel. There has been no South African ambassador in Israel for five years.

Israeli hostage families becoming increasingly irate as they seek answers from Netanyahu

0

In Israel, families of hostages are upset and want the government to give them information about their loved ones and make a deal for their release.

I want them to promise that everyone will come back home. All the people who were kept against their will. “We need written promises and answers,” said Shai Wenkert, whose son Omer is being held captive by Hamas in Gaza.

Wenkert talked to the news on Monday, before he and other family members met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his war team in Tel Aviv.

Only a few families have met with Netanyahu. This has made many other relatives of hostages angry because they feel the government isn’t doing enough to help free them.

However, for some people, the meeting made them even more frustrated. Udi Goren left the meeting early because he felt there was no new information about his cousin who was taken captive. He wanted to know more about a possible deal to release the hostages, but the war cabinet didn’t provide any details.

About 239 people are being held captive in Gaza after they were taken during an attack by Hamas on Israel. This attack was the biggest one on Israel since it was formed in 1948 and it resulted in the death of about 1,200 people.

On October 20, two Americans named Judith Tai Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter Natalie Raanan were released because of serious reasons after Qatar and Hamas talked and made a deal.

two Israeli women, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, were also released

Lifshitz said it was a really terrible experience. She was taken from her home, put on a motorbike and driven to a network of tunnels.

Israel declared a war on Hamas and stopped goods from getting into Gaza after the October 7 attacks. This caused a very bad situation for the people living in Gaza. Approximately 12,700 Palestinians have passed away since the war started, as reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the West Bank, which gets its information from health authorities in the Gaza Strip run by Hamas.

Many people in Israel still strongly support the war against Hamas, but more and more people are criticizing Netanyahu and his government. They think they should have known about the October 7 attack and done more to free the hostages.

Ben-Gvir is a politician in Israel who wants to make the country bigger by taking over land that belongs to Palestinians. He also wants to make a new law that would give the death penalty to people who commit terrorist acts.

However, a lot of families with hostages believe that Ben-Gvir is putting their loved ones in more danger. They think that Hamas may not want to release the hostages if they think Israel will kill Palestinian prisoners.

During the meeting in the parliament, people showed pictures of their family and spoke out their anger and disappointment. “Bring our loved ones back. ” shouted Gil Dickmann, whose cousin is trapped in Gaza.

Don’t talk about hurting Arabs. “This is what you need to do. ” yelled Hen Avigdori, whose wife and daughter were taken on October 7th.

Almog Cohen, who works with Ben-Gvir in the Jewish Power party, responded to family members. “You are not the only one who feels pain. ” “We also put more than 50 friends in the ground,” Cohen said.

Ben-Gvir is working to make a new law and it is being reviewed by the government. It still needs to go through a few more steps before it can become a law and there’s still a possibility that it could be taken back.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said on Telegram that his group is almost at a peace deal with Israel. The United States, Israel, and Qatar have been helping with the negotiations.

The message came after Hamas had given an answer to the mediators in Qatar. “Haniyeh said that the group gave their answer to the brothers in Qatar and the mediators, and they are close to agreeing to a truce. ”

Haniyeh didn’t give more information about the possible agreement.

There is still no agreement, and many issues still need to be solved. However, the people involved in the negotiations are feeling hopeful.

Netanyahu has said two things he wants to achieve in the war – to free all the hostages and to defeat Hamas. Israel has said no to requests from other countries to stop fighting until their hostages are returned.

A$AP Rocky Says ‘Making Children’ with Rihanna Is Their Best Collaboration: ‘Nothing’s Better Than That’

0

As far as A$AP Rocky is concerned, he and Rihanna have already completed their best collaboration — music, business or otherwise.

The rapper, 35, was in Las Vegas over the weekend for the Formula 1 Grand Prix with the “Umbrella” singer, 35. Wwhen asked by Complex if he would ever consider collaborating with Rihanna on a project at Puma — where they both work as creative directors on their own respective lines — he didn’t quite have business on his mind.

“What could we team up and just like f—ing smash and go crazy on?” Rocky pondered in response to the question before answering, “I think we do a real great job at collaborating and making children.”

“I think that’s our best creation so far,” he said of the pair’s two sons, newborn Riot Rose, and RZA, 18 months. “Nothing’s better than that.”

Rocky then gave a shout-out to the third player involved in his and the Fenty founder’s family of four — “a ghost designer named God” who he said “shaped everything.”

“And we have these beautiful angels, so that’s the best collaboration,” the “Sundress” rapper added of his kids.

Rocky’s comments came after he and Rihanna stepped out in Las Vegas together on Saturday, joining the flock of A-list stars in the city for the Grand Prix, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton.

The couple also made a surprise appearance at the launch of the new Puma x F1 collection, less than a month after Rocky was named creative director of the athletic brand’s new partnership with F1. Per Puma’s website, the line will “focus on the intersection of the sport and streetwear,” and Rocky will design “bespoke capsules” as part of his role.

Rihanna has long been involved with PUMA, having first launched the Fenty x Puma collaboration in 2014. She later took over as the brand’s creative director, making her debut in the fashion world with a collection of highly coveted footwear, including the iconic fluffy slides. She also showed off her talent with numerous New York Fashion Week shows.

She launched her last collection with the brand in 2017, which included an assortment of unique athleisure and schoolwear fusion looks.

That same year, she launched Fenty Beauty with the release of a then-unprecedented 40 foundation shades — more than all her competitors. The makeup brand has continued to dominate the beauty and skincare landscape since its launch, but the “Lift Me Up” singer is now returning to her roots at Puma, as she announced earlier this year.

The brand posted a cryptic message in March, writing, “She’s back,” against an all-black screen and including the Fenty brand logo, hinting at Rihanna’s return.

Her Puma comeback came in September with the launch of a new sneaker design, which she called the Avanti. The $160 unisex shoe is a hybrid of Puma’s King football boot and Easy Rider running shoe. Rihanna told Footwear News of the release: “Football is a universal language that brings people together from all over the world, all walks of life, and I wanted to pay homage to that.”

As for her process of designing it, she told Vogue that she pulled from Puma’s “incredible” archives.

“There is so much history and legacy here, and I wanted to honor that by paying tribute to the Avanti. [The King is] the shoe that [Brazilian football player] Pelé played in and made very famous, and I know people are looking forward to their return.”

The collection, which dropped Sept. 15, also includes kids’ sizes, which she said was a selfish move. “This time around, we expanded our creations to kids, ’cause I selfishly want my boys in everything their dad and I wear or design.”

Of being back at Puma, Rihanna told Vogue, “It’s a bit of a family reunion.”

“Coming back to Puma as a mom, in a new space, allowed for new perspectives and ideas,” she added.-people

I have only served once as President – Edgar Lungu

I have only served once as President – Lungu

FORMER president Edgar Lungu has backed up the sentiments by his supporters that he was not sworn into office of President twice.

Submitting before the Constitutional Court in a matter where youth activist Michelo Chizombe is questioning his third bid to participate in the 2021 general elections and future presidential elections, Lungu swore that he has never served two terms as alleged by Chizombe.

In this matter Chizombe wants the Court to declare that Lungu’s participation in the previous election was unconstitutional.

Chizombe who has cited Lungu, the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the Attorney General as respondents in the matter indicated that Lungu contravened the constitution when he participated in the August 12, 2021 general elections.

He stated that the electoral body contravened the constitution when it accepted Lungu’s nomination and allowed him to be on the ballot paper for the 2021 presidential elections which enabled him to participate.

The petitioner wants the Court to pronounce that Lungu is not eligible to contest a presidential election under the current constitution as read with the now repealed 1991 Constitution (as amended).

He wants the Court to declare that it was illegal for ECZ to include Lungu on the ballot.

Chizombe is seeking a combined interpretation of Sections 7 of Act no.1 of 2016 and Section 2 of the same Act.

He also wants the Court to declare that the entire Article 106 of the Constitution (Amendment) Act no. 2 of 2016 did not apply to Lungu’s first presidential term.

Chizombe is further seeking a declaration that Lungu is not eligible to seek presidential office for a third term.

But in his answer to the petition, the former president argued that the ConCourt had already pronounced itself on his eligibility debate when it cleared all constitutional hurdles for his attempt at third term.

He said a dissenting judgement by Court president Margaret Munalula cannot be relied upon to set a precedent.

In July 2021 professor Munalula dissented the ruling of the majority which decreed that Lungu’s first term in office was not a complete term as defined by Article 106(6) as it was inherited from late President Micheal Sata.

This was in a case where Legal Resources Foundation Limited, historian Sishuwa Sishuwa and Chapter One Foundation petitioned Lungu for abrogating the law when he filed in his nomination papers as the PF presidential candidate in the August 12, 2021 general elections after assuming the office of President twice.

Judge Munalula had ruled that the term which Lungu concluded on behalf of late President Sata was not inherited as it was a full term although it lasted for 19 months.

She said Lungu was barred by Article 106(3) of the Constitution from running for presidency.

However Lungu argues that the reasoning of the majority aligns with established principles and precedents.

He said Chizombe missed an opportunity to challenge his qualification for the election when the issue was taken to Court under three different petitions.

“A dissenting judgement does not represent the majority opinion which set out legal precedent. Relying on a dissenting judgement indicates that Chizombe has no case,”Lungu said.

“The first respondent (Lungu) will aver at trial that he has not served two terms as alleged by the petitioner.”

He added that the Court should embrace the principle of finality in legal decisions, and consider the grim effects of setting aside a decision that was rightfully made in his favour.

“This court should thoroughly review all relevant legal provisions and the majority decisions was not made in ignorance of any applicable law,” said Lungu….https://kalemba.news/…/i-have-only-served-once-as…/

ZUPED SHOCKED…. that some opposition political parties are celebrating the failure by govt to reach a consensus with creditors

ZUPED SHOCKED

…. that some opposition political parties are celebrating the failure by govt to reach a consensus with creditors

Livingstone… Tuesday November 21, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)

The Zambians Unity Peace and Development (ZUPED) has expressed shock that some opposition political parties and bloggers are celebrating the perceived failure by the UPND government to reach a consensus with Zambia’s creditors and has since urged government to focus on other alternatives such as mining sector.

The organization is confident that once Vedanta Resources fully takes over the operations of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), some of the challenges in the country will be a thing of the past.

Zambia’s official creditors including China rejected a deal the country struck with its international bondholders because they believed its “base case” scenario did not deliver debt relief comparable to what they offered in a separate deal.

But ZUPED President Ronnie Jere says it is very disheartening because this will affect the majority Zambian citizens.

Mr Jere emphasized that this is not a matter to joke about or indeed celebrate because of its impact on the country.

“As Zambians Unity Peace and Development we are highly disturbed by some social media happenings where we are seeing some members of the opposition political parties and some bloggers celebrating this perceived failure by the government to reach a consensus with creditors. We hope that people can become patriotic so much that when there is something going wrong in the country it should be a source of worry and not a source of celebration,” he said.

“We know that government is struggling to negotiate their debt and we are aware that IMF has reached a staff agreement with the Zambian government with the US$1.5 million loan. We want to congratulate government on that.”

The ZUPED President has encouraged the government to look at other alternatives such as mining sector saying the government can get something from this important sector.

He said since the government and Vedanta Resources signed the shareholders agreement and implementation agreement, it is important that the takeover process is expedited.

“Government should now be looking at other alternatives such as mining. We are happy that government signed stakeholders agreement and implementation agreement with Vedanta Resources over Konkola Copper Mines Plc but there are steps that need to be taken. Government should be serious and quickly take those steps so that the handing over KCM to Vedanta Resources can be expedited,” he added.

“We are happy with how this is moving but we think that there is need to make sure that by early December the whole process should have been finalized and ensure that Vedanta should be running KCM. At the moment we should have been thinking about the liquidator who is still at KCM and as long as the liquidator is there, it is difficult for Vedanta to do anything such as appointing of the board of directors.”

Mr Jere said government should quickly withdraw the Liquidator in order to make progress.

“Stakeholders are still anxiously waiting to see progress at the mining firm. Concerning the issue of registering the shareholders agreement and implementation agreement in the Zambian courts, we urge government to quickly push to register the two agreements in the courts so that operations can begin and people start benefiting from what Vedanta promised such as the US$250 million for contractors and suppliers as well as the salary increment for KCM workers,” said Mr Jere.

“At the moment, KCM is failing to pay salaries to its workers which is a source of worry.”

He also expressed concern with the performance of the kwacha against major convertible currencies saying this can be improved if the country exports more copper to earn the much needed forex.

He said this is possible if Vedanta can quickly start running KCM so as to increase copper production at the mining firm.

Stop Making the Waters Muddy – Ezekiel 34:18 reminds us

Introduction

“Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? Ezekial 34:18 reminds us.”

The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) believes an unhealthy political and social environment can have detrimental effects on a country, potentially leading to challenges in governance.

When a nation faces widespread issues such as corruption, social unrest, economic inequality, or political instability, it can indeed become more difficult to govern effectively.

A healthy political and social environment typically involves factors like the rule of law, transparent institutions, respect for human rights, and civic engagement.

These elements contribute to stability and enable governments to address challenges and meet the needs of their citizens. Conversely, when these factors are compromised, it can lead to dissatisfaction among the population, erode trust in institutions, and create an environment that is more difficult to live in.

The CCZ reiterates its concerns around matters of national interest such as shrinking democratic space, increase in cost of living, and the continued arrests of opposition political party members.

These issues have been spoken to publicly and privately through engagements with the govemment particularly State House and concerned stakeholders, a situation that has prompted reactions through pastoral letters and press statements as captured in the end-of-year note issued on 2nd January 2023 among other press releases.

This background, therefore, prompts CCZ to share the following.

1. The Council of Churches in Zambia CCZ wishes to condemn in the strongest terms the redeployment of Mrs. Thandiwe Phiri – Mhende Chief Registrar of Societies. The Registrar’s redeployment raises more questions than answers especially since this development was proceeded by office searches and police callouts.

We wish to urge the government to uphold the rule of law not just by lip service but by walking the talk. We cannot talk about development if we will say one thing and do the complete opposite.

2. Political leaders should remember to prioritize the wel-being of their constituents, act with integrity, and follow the rule of law as prescribed in the Zambian constitution. They should endeavor to represent the interests of the people and not their own.

The political field should not be muddy, less it will be suffocated and make the country ungovernable.3. CCZ is taken aback to learn of the many civil servants who have been transferred and redeployed and, in some cases, sent on leave because they were perceived not to be supporting or sympathizing with the ruling party.

This is not the Zambia we want, and this is not the rule of law we have longed for. We urge office bearers to check their consciousness and defend the law as established.

4. The continued trend of political party cadres making threats and unnecessary protests at the expense of respecting those in Authority is uncalled for. One wonders where these cadres get such powers, why the police are selective in slapping the law on such lawbreakers.

Political parties must be issue-based in their campaigns and market themselves without resorting to violence and intimidation of opponents.

All political parties should live as brothers and sisters in love and unity despite their political affiliations. CCZ therefore, calls on the Political Leaders to tame their cadres and to walk the talk by living by what they say.

Cadres just like any other citizens should not take the law into their own hands but instead report any anomaly to relevant institutions for action.

5. CCZ notes with concern the challenges around the Farmers Input Support Program (FISP) that has continued to witness farmers complaining of inadequate inputs and in some cases forced to share inputs.

6. The CCZ is also worried about the selective way the fight against corruption is being undertaken. We demand that all citizens should be treated fairly and that no one should be above the law.

7. We encourage the government not to use the police to fight political battles. The continued unprofessional conduct of using state security wings to fight political opponents also sends a wrong reputation on the democracy of the nation.

While we do not agree with ill sentiments from some political players that cause tension and division in the country, we call for professional conduct of the police service as they manage such incidences. The conduct particularly on Sean Tembo, Fred M’membe, Given Lubinda, and Raphael Nakachinda among other political players is uncalled for. Let us firmly plant, nature and promote human dignity as this will enhance our democratic reputation as a Country.

8. In conclusion, CCZ expresses its solidarity with the statements by the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), and Lawyers Association of Zambia (LAZ) that have equally spoken to matters of public interest. Our call is that the government should pay attention and take hid of the advice rather than being defensive.

God Bless us all, God Bless Zambia.
