Kwacha Appreciation Temporal – Yusuf Dodia

KWACHA APPRECIATION TEMPORAL – DODIA

Private Sector Development Association chairperson Yusuf Dodia has said that the appreciation of the Kwacha against major convertible currencies is temporal.

In an interview, Dodia attributed the appreciation of the Kwacha to the Central Bank’s decision to release forex from the foreign reserves into the economy in order to stabilise the local currency.

“If the Kwacha is appreciating because exporters are bringing in foreign earnings in the country and therefore our banks have more foreign currency. And because there’s more foreign currency there’s less demand for forex and the Kwacha has appreciated. Then we are doing the right thing,” Dodia explained. “But if the Kwacha is getting stronger because the Bank of Zambia has released forex from foreign reserves into the economy to help the Kwacha stabilise, then it is a temporal solution. It is like putting a bandage on the wound without treating the wound. You are just giving it a temporal relief and after one month or so, you get back to the same problem.”

And Dodia said that Zambia’s economic outlook is not positive.

He cited the high electricity tariffs, increased fuel pump prices and the decision by government to start importing mealie meal from neighbouring countries; as some of the contributing factors.

“We have allowed the importation of mealie meal from neighbouring countries; meaning that we are taking foreign currency out of the country. The electricity tariffs have been increased and ZESCO has proposed an increase in tariffs. That will impact negatively on the economy,” Dodia said. “Energy plays a critical role in any economy. The way water keeps a human body running is the way energy keeps the economy. Other than that, prices of fuel are high. We have shut Indeni, so we do not process fuel from there. This in turn means that we will continue importing finished products, which is very expensive. This has made the cost of doing business expensive because you need fuel to transport raw materials, to transport finished products and workers. Other than that, you need fuel to run machinery in factories. When the cost of production is high, the cost of goods and services become high. And ultimately ordinary citizens will continue struggling. I don’t think the country’s economic outlook is positive.”

He said that in order to improve the country’s economy, government should quickly resolve the debt crisis in which the country has found itself and take full control of the energy sector.

“Unless we do things differently, I am afraid the economy is likely to remain the same. We need to quickly resolve the debt crisis. There are lamentations over that because countries like Ghana is already ahead of us,” said Dodia. “It should also be noted that in countries likea China, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia the government is in control of the energy sector just like we do with the Army and Zambia Police, because we consider those as sovereign tools. We have put the Zambia Army and the Zambia Police in government control because they are there for the prevention of citizens’ invasion. But we are overlooking economic invasion by commercialising and privatising the energy sector… http://dailyrevelationzambia.com/kwacha-appreciation-temporal-dodia/

Zambia, US ties not mutually beneficial – Peter Chanda

Zambia, US ties not mutually beneficial – Chanda

By Bright Tembo

NEW Congress Party president Peter Chanda says the bilateral ties between Zambia and United States of America are not for mutual benefit with Zambia.

Addressing journalists in Lusaka on Sunday alongside Zambia Republic party leaders Wright Musoma, Chanda said the bilateral tie favour the US more than Zambia.

He said the only benefit Zambians are getting is high cost of living.

“The relationship between Zambia and America, the bilateral ties that exist are not for mutual benefit but to some extent they’re always bent on America to benefit more and Zambia gaining less. What Zambian people are benefiting is the high cost of living, we have electricity tariffs that are high,’’ he said. ‘’We have fuel at high cost. When the previous regime was associating more in terms of development cooperation with the BRICS; that is China, Russia, Brazil just like our friends in South Africa the cost of living for the Zambian people was better off than it is now. Bilateral relationship between government two governments should be of mutual benefit; even someone boasts that we are part of the champions league, there is nothing beneficial from the League of Nations.’’

He added that America will always give Zambia a raw deal.

“The Zambian people have the duty to see who is the better friend; you can see with the PF regime which was so close with the BRICKS you can see that the cost of living was lower, it was not as high as it is,’’ said Chanda. “Americans will always give us a raw deal, while China and other cooperating partners like Russia they always give us a real deal. In terms of infrastructure development we can say Zambia’s face has changed; is it owing to the bilateral ties with Americans? No?”

And Musoma has cautioned government against entertaining the US.

He said Zambia should not sell her integrity to America, expressing worry that this is what the new dawn government has done.

“We wish to caution the Zambian government and citizens against naively entertaining the charade by the US currently in display in Zambia and the rest of Africa. Our country must strongly defend its integrity and sovereignty from US interference. We must jealously protect our resources from the profit driven foreign firms that meekly come to our country in the name of international partnership,” said Musoma. “We want to state that American investors have no love for Zambia, apart from their own personal interests. We are saying this because we remember how Anglo-America told off our late president Levy Mwanawasa that their interest was profit and not the welfare of Zambians at the time they were pulling out of Zambia. We would like to state that close ties to US exploits abroad are promotion of American values that are contrasting to our own African values.’

Chewa chieftainship Supremacy: Lundu vs Gawa Undi…..Why Lundu claims that Gawa Undi is not Chewa Supreme leader?

…..Why Lundu claims that Gawa Undi is not Chewa Supreme leader?…

By Cedric Chithenga Nyoni

During the reign of Kalonga Chidzonzi, a younger brother of the king called Undi Chisakamzondi was assigned by the king to distribute land to other subchiefs on behalf of Kalonga Chidzonzi.

This was where the name ‘Gawa.’ (which literally means ‘one who shares’) was derived from.

Succession dispute between Undi and Mazula:

Upon the death of Chidzonzi, Undi wanted to become Kalonga (King), but Muzura the king’s nephew was propelled as the new Kalonga.

The Maravi people were matrilineal and a nephew (son of king’s sister/mdzukulu) was the one supposed to be the next king Mazula was rightful candidate to succeed his late uncle Kalonga Chidzonzi not Undi who was young brother to the departed king.

After losing the succession dispute with Mazula, Gawa Undi broke away from the kingdom with his followers and headed to Zambia border and established their own kingdom with their capital Maano near Kapoche river.

Undi’s followers were called the Nyanja and their language is chiNyanja widely spoken in Eastern province of the present day Zambia.

The rise of Lundu
Lundu was also a nephew of Kalonga Chidzonzi, cousin to Kalonga Mazula.

He was tasked to move to the Shire highlands to create and expand the Maravi Empire frontiers.

Lundu left Mankhamba, around Mtakataka in Dedza district (The Capital ) with a religious section of the Banda clan establishing his headquarters in the lowershire.

The Mbona Shrine at Khulubvi
At first Lundu was reporting to the Kalonga Mazula (his cousin) as a subchief but stopped doing so as he had his own religious shrine which Gawa Undi did not have.

His religious leader was Mlauri/M’bona son of his sub chief Ngabu.
At his peak Lundu and M’bona had taken over the control of Shire highlands establishing M’bona cults at Michiru, Mpemba, Thyolo, Malabvi and Chiperoni mountains.

Lundu had risen so powerful than any other subchiefs because of his control of the religious centres.

This led Lundu to be in conflict with Kalonga Mazura who joining with the Portuguese to subdue Lundu.

The fall of Lundu
Lundu was finally deposed and killed by the Makololos in 1863 marking the end of Maravi rulers.

The reinstatement of Lundu Chieftain
Soon after attaining independence, Dr Banda reinstated one of the descendants of Lundu as a paramount chief of the Mang’anja while deploring the Makololos as invaders.

Dr Banda did not reinstate any remnants of the royal Kalonga family to be Kalonga (Supreme head of all the Chewas)

Dr Banda also deposed Chief Mwase of Kasungu the only remaining senior of the Chewa Chiefs..

There was a power vacuum as there was no any Kalonga for the Chewa people.

This power vacuum led to the growth of Gawa Undi of Zambia claiming the KALONGA title even over the Chewa, Chipeta, Nyanja and Mang’anja of Malawi.

Lundu still maintains that Gawa Undi is not Kalonga but he is as any subordinate chiefs because he (Undi) broke away from the Kingdom after losing succession battle with Kalonga Mazula.

Therefore, Lundu remains legitimate Kalonga King not Gawa Undi as it has been advanced for years as Chewa tribe is matrilineal not patriarch.- maravipost

I recruited girls for Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha – beauty therapist

A Cape Town-based beauty salon owner has revealed that the convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester and his fugitive girlfriend Dr Nandipha Magudumana hired him in November 2022 to recruit girls for their modelling agency known as “imedia”.

Speaking exclusively to Independent Media, the beauty therapist trading under the name “Taffy Tally Marz”, who is also known as “Talent” and runs an event management company and the Cape Town Nails Guru, which specialises in nails, manicures and pedicures, revealed that Bester and Magudumana paid him handsomely for recruiting “beautiful girls” for them.

He explained that when he was hired by the couple, he was not aware of who Bester was until he appeared in the news after it was exposed that the fugitive and his partner were the most wanted by the country’s law enforcement agencies.

“I met Thabo Bester in November 2022; he first came to my salon for a haircut and I assisted him.

“When he was about to leave he asked if he could have my number to make an appointment should he want to come again… we started chatting on WhatsApp and he invited me for lunch at the Silo Hotel where he told me about his business ventures. He said that he was in property development and media-related work.

“Bester started coming to my salon twice a week where I was plaiting his hair, three weeks later after i had met him he indicated he would bring his wife and some of the people he introduced as Dr Nandipha’s cousins.

“I did their nails (manicure) but I had questions about Dr Nandipha because I knew her from social media, I was shocked because I knew nshe was married but I decided to keep it to myself because I don’t get into other people’s private lives.

Talent revealed that he became close to Dr Nandipha and would often go out for lunch with her and the kids but did not suspect that there was anything untoward.

Furthermore, he disclosed that Bester and Magudumana owned a model agency known as Eye Model Management and that the couple had become aware of his event management skills where he hosted parties in various nightclubs around the city. Bester and Magudumana asked him to work for them recruiting girls and paid him a lot of money for his services.

“I recruited the girls as per the specific criteria they had given me. I would send them pictures and set up a meeting for Bester with the models. At some point, I would personally attend meetings with the models, and once satisfied I would send Bester their details including their pictures. I attended more than five meetings with Bester and the models.

“In December last year, Bester gave me a call and informed me that a model from Johannesburg would fly down to Cape Town and I was sent money to arrange all the logistics. I booked for her at the Capital Hotel and made her comfortable as instructed by Bester. Before the model came, we had a conference call where Dr Nandipha, Bester, and another girl discussed everything about the model.”

Taffy Tally provided Independent Media the WhatsApp messages where he was directly in contact with Bester and provided pictures and details of the models.

Bester, known as the “Facebook rapist”, successfully staged a prison break from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein in May 2022. He faked his suicide by setting another person’s body alight in his cell.

Magudumana is now facing charges of murder, fraud, aiding and abetting Bester’s prison break, arson and defeating the ends of justice.

On Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi briefed members of the portfolio committee on matters related to Bester’s identity and return to South Africa last week.

Motsoaledi told the committee that while a sample of Bester’s DNA was taken ahead of his rape and murder trial in 2011, it was never tested.

The minister further confirmed that for his entire life, Bester had completely evaded any form of identity registration.

Bester has no identity number and has never been issued a passport.

CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN EASTERN AFRICA BEMOAN INCREASED CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS

CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN EASTERN AFRICA BEMOAN INCREASED CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS.

Lusaka -17th April, 2023: Catholic Bishops in the east African region grouping called Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) say the increase in extreme weather causing events such as droughts, floods, and cyclones, combined with rising sea levels, are causing enormous damage to our infrastructure, agriculture, and natural resources.

The Catholic bishops from Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Eretria have added that the development is leading to shrinking financial resources available for development and for fighting poverty.

AMECEA President Rt. Rev. Charles Kasonde who is also bishop of the Catholic diocese of Solwezi said governments in Africa are now borrowing more to address the people’s immediate needs.

“This is forcing African governments to borrow more money to address the immediate needs of their populations, such as providing food, shelter, and medical care in the aftermath of natural disasters,” bishop Kasonde said.

Making reference to Pope Francis’ Encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, in which he calls for a renewed sense of global solidarity and highlights the need to address climate change as a shared responsibility, Bishop Kasonde said in this spirit, AMECEA bishops call upon the G7, G20, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to increase concessional financing for climate action and urgent liquidity needs in African countries.

Bishop Kasonde added that rich countries can use their excess special drawing rights (SDRs) and other financial resources to help poorer nations combat the impacts of climate change without leaving them indebted which he said is doable and the time to act is now.

Bishop Kasonde added climate change is an existential threat to planet [earth], and it is already having devastating effects on Africa with climate-vulnerable countries on the continent bearing the brunt of climate change even though they did not contribute as much as the industrialised countries have.

The president of AMECEA also many African countries are burdened with heavy debts, which limit their capacity to respond to the harsh impacts of climate change and to invest in renewable energy and other climate-friendly initiatives.

He said that debt repayment often takes priority over environmental conservation, leading to deforestation and other environmentally damaging practices.

“Many African countries are burdened with heavy debts, which limit their capacity to respond to the harsh impacts of climate change and to invest in renewable energy and other climate-friendly initiatives. Additionally, debt repayment often takes priority over environmental conservation, leading to deforestation and other environmentally damaging practices. As a result, tackling the debt crisis is crucial for African countries to effectively address the challenge of climate change and achieve sustainable development,” he said.

“Additionally, debt repayment often takes priority over environmental conservation, leading to deforestation and other environmentally damaging practices. As a result, tackling the debt crisis is crucial for African countries to effectively address the challenge of climate change and achieve sustainable development,” bishop Kasonde added.

Bishop Kasonde however noted that to tackle the current debt crisis affecting Africa it is important to pay attention to private debt.

He said debt crisis cannot be resolved without protection from private creditor litigation for debtor countries.

“Private creditors hold 60% of debt. Passing legislation in the main debt contract jurisdictions is urgent. These are primarily G7 jurisdictions. In New York, I urge support for the Hoylman-Sigal / Fahy NY Taxpayer and International Debt Crises Protection Act, which will secure private creditor participation in debt relief agreements. We are encouraged to see similar efforts our partners in other G7 countries are pushing,” bishop said.

Bishop Charles Kasonde said this is how religious and community leaders from around the world are working for a Jubilee at a vigil and press conference on the occasion of the International Monitory Fund (IMF), World Bank and G20 Meetings in Washington.

On April 10th – April 16th, world leaders gathered in Washington, DC for the G20, IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings where they have made consequential decisions affecting billions of people and planet earth.

HOW I ALMOST LOST MY WIFE TO A STRANGE MAN.

HOW I ALMOST LOST MY WIFE TO A STRANGE MAN. (Educative Story by the Winlos)

When my daughter just started schooling. My wife needed me to take our daughter to school to start activities.

Because of my kind of schedule, being my pattern before I got married, I always pray at night, study at night…I then sleep from 5:00am in the morning till like 9:00am.

I told my wife I won’t be able to take her and our daughter to school because of my activities. At that time, we had a car but she has refused to learn how to drive. I told her to find a way around it.

The first time she complained she went to school, she was angry, she complained angrily the second and third time; I didn’t care.

At a time, I realize she was doing it sweatlessly and she was beginning to enjoy it. She comes back many times and says”sweetheart, I just took our daughter to school. Mehn, I enjoyed it. Guess what? There’s this guy… anytime we come out of the compound, he just picks me and our daughter. A car with good A.C, he drops us back”.

She came again and said the guy picked her, the second day she said again, “Honey, this guy picked me”. 🙄

The next morning, I woke up…took my car keys and said to her “sweetheart enter into the car, I’ll like to take you to school”.

Ladies and gentlemen, I know some of you will say that is jealousy, but alot of men have lost their homes because they are not responsible. There’s a difference between jealousy and responsibility. Alot of us have lost our home because we are not responding to the ability that we have.

Everyone of us have a unique ability God has given to us to make our home work but we are not responsible to that ability, so we just act the “I don’t care attitude” and we loose out to that which God has given us as a spouse.

Mrs Winlos: Myself, when we just got married, I use to feel like because my husband is a man of God, he doesn’t really need sex. That there’s actually no need on that, I just feel he’s a man of God, always speaking in tongues “lagbardabrada”. This my man of God he’s a man of God, everytime he looks up to heaven…the Spirit has done it. Lols.😂.

I didn’t think that sex was a necessity. It is one thing for you to read books concerning marriage and another thing to live the books you have read.

I didn’t think sex was necessary, my belief is that men are driven by what they see. I was like, this man is a pastor; I didn’t know that I was failing in that area.

I didn’t know that he was just looking at a wife, like looking at a wife as a dummy. Someone just putting clothes on. I didn’t know that he was first a Man (Flesh, Nature) before he became a man of God. And that sex is very important. And when God created man, is that we need sex.

God created us that we as men need sex and our wife must satisfy us and that is how God created us but unfortunately many women (Christian women) usually play with that aspect. Lifting the holy hands, doing devotions and giving excuses why the spouse’s need shouldn’t be met.

And if you are not careful, you will realize you are releasing that spouse to the jezebel you are binding outside.

MRS WINLOS: It is true It’s very important that we think about our abilities, what we are able to do so we can respond quickly to it because lack of sensitivity has made alot of marriages to fail.

Sensitivity has made alot of marriages to fail, it is when you are sensitive to the responsibilities that you have, that is when you can have a fulfilled marriage.

TUNISIA REJECTS IMF LOANS AND WANTS TO JOIN BRICS

By Newroom
Mahmoud bin Mabrouk, spokesman for the pro-president ‘July 25 Movement’ in Tunisia, said that his country wants to join BRICS, a group of leading emerging economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, that is often seen as an alternative to the Western hegemony.

In November, neighboring Algeria filed an official application to join BRICS, and bin Mabrouk said Tunisia would follow in its North African neighbor’s footsteps.

Egypt has also announced its intention to join the bloc.

Sharan Grewal, a nonresident fellow in the Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings, told Al-Monitor, “It’s not clear how official this bid is.

It didn’t come from President Kais Saied or any governmental official, it came from one of the many small, new political movements that have emerged in support of the president since 2021.”

Tunisia has been at an impasse in securing a $2 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund.

“He [Saied] has railed against the proposed IMF program — that his own government negotiated — as a foreign diktat, and so he could in theory be viewing the BRICS as an alternative mechanism for foreign aid and support,” Grewal added.

‘The 14th BRICS summit’s Beijing Declaration made clear the organization supports membership expansion; China upholds the BRICS spirit of openness, win-win cooperation to accelerate the process,’ Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Tunisia’s reported bid to join BRICS.

Dr. Sabina Henneberg, Soref Fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy pointed out that Tunisia needs important structural economic reforms in order to resume pre-2011 levels of GDP growth and avoid long-term debt.

“Beyond that, Tunisia would probably need to acquire more of a reputation as an international powerhouse — recently it has been trying to assert an anti-Western position but not necessarily with strong contributions to the global economy to offer,” she added.

Hennenberg said that Tunisia’s historical ties with Western countries like the US will also mean that it will need to demonstrate stronger anti-West credentials.

Alexandra Blackman, assistant professor of government at Cornell University, said that one of the guiding principles of Tunisian politics, especially under President Saied, is the rejection of foreign interference, and this mantra has been repeated throughout the IMF negotiations.

She said BRICS may seem more appealing as it is perceived at coming with less foreign interference than the IMF, which some critics say is too aligned to US policy.

ONE MAN COMMANDO , JOHNSON BWALYA

Born in Mufulira in on 3 December 1967 , Bwalya attended Kantanshi Secondary school and began his career at hometown club Butondo Western Tigers. In 1986, he joined Mufulira Wanderers, winning Footballer of the Year in his first season at the club. At the end of the season, he signed for Swiss club FC Fribourg.

He later played for FC Sion, FC Bulle, SC Kriens, FC Luzern, and SR Delémont.

Bwalya made his debut for the Zambia national team in April 1987 in an All Africa Games qualifier against Malawi in Lusaka and was part of the Zambia team that qualified to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

He scored a goal in Zambia’s 4–0 win against Italy on their way to becoming the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

After slipping past a defender, Bwalya hit a shot from nearly 35 yards that swerved and dipped just under the crossbar.

In the game against West Germany which Zambia lost 4–0, he was injured. He did not feature for Zambia for the next four years.

Upon his recovery, Bwalya regained his form and won back his place in the national team and was to join up with the team for the Senegal game only to learn that the plane carrying the team had plunged into the sea in the Gabon disaster.

When a new team was assembled it was Bwalya and Kalusha Bwalya that led the team, both of them scoring in a match against Morocco with Bwalya getting the winning goal with a 25-metre shot in 2–1 win.

Bwalya was part of the team that reached the final of the 1994 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia and was a stand-in captain in Kalusha’s absence as the team also qualified to the 1996 African Cup of Nations in South Africa where they lost to Tunisia in the semi-finals.

At the 1996 African Cup of Nations, Bwalya was part of a Zambian team that won the bronze medal, scoring 15 goals in the process and defeating Egypt 3–1 in a come from behind quarter-final victory.

In 1997, Zambia drew a World Cup qualifier with South Africa 0–0 at Independence Stadium in Lusaka amid reports of a falling out between Bwalya and Kalusha Bwalya, with Bwalya unhappy with the latter’s influence on team selection. Later that year, Bwalya as captain led Zambia and lifted the inaugural COSAFA Castle Cup.

When new coach German Burkhard Ziese took over the reins of the national team in late 1997, he accused Bwalya of having the wrong attitude by not attending a team meeting and dropped him from the team travelling to 1998 African Cup of Nations where Zambia was knocked out in the group stages.

SNAPSHOT IN HISTORY: ZAMBIA AND TRIBAL POLITICS 1971

SNAPSHOT IN HISTORY – ZAMBIA AND TRIBAL POLITICS 1971

KAUNDA SEEKING TO END TRIBALISM IN ZAMBIAN POLITICS

By Charles Mohr

Special to The New York Times

May 26, 1971

LUSAKA, Zambia, May 19— President Kenneth D. Kaunda has moved vigorously to silence what he calls the “dirty and cheap tribal Mafias” that have brought four years of intense political infighting to this Central African nation.

Mr. Kaunda’s solution was the drastic one of strongly dis couraging open competition within the ranks of his ruling United National Independence party. Such competition had tended to divide the party into quarreling, hostile ethnic blocs.

This month the President convened an important party conference at rural Mulungushi. At his urging the delegates adopted a new party constitution that eliminated the position of deputy party leader—and thus removed a major incentive for political fratricide.

The delegates also elected, without opposition, a new central committee and extended its term of office from three to five years so as to give the country as much breathing space as possible. In the past there had been heated contests for committee posts.

Justin Henry Chimba, the Minister of National Guidance, who had charged that his tribe was being persecuted, was removed from the central committee.

Optimism Expressed

In an interview, the 46‐year‐ old Mr. Kaunda said he now believed “we have the opportunity of getting over this problem of tribalism in the future.”

It was one of the few optimistic remarks the President has made on the subject in recent years. Not long ago he had warned that ethnic politics could “drag Zambia down the drain of anarchy and blood shed.”

And in his opening address at the party conference he said: “Some historians will no doubt record that instability and mud slinging dominated political activity during the period since 1967.”

Zambia’s population includes 73 tribes, most of them miniscule in size, that are grouped into half a dozen language groups. The lack of clear numerical superiority for any one group did not prevent the emergence of tribal politics but simply caused it to take the form of coalition‐building.

Tribalism in politics is wide spread in Africa. The unusual thing about Zambia’s case is the frankness with which her leaders have admitted the existence of the problem.

Zambia, formerly Northern Rhodesia, gained independence from British colonial rule in October of 1964. The land locked, butterfly‐shaped country has only slightly more than four million people. But, in continent of still weak and small nations, it has a position of central importance.

Big Producer of Copper

It is the world’s third largest producer of copper, and the mines have brought unusual wealth as well as creating un usually large gaps between pour peasants and well‐paid urban workers.

Surrounded to the south and on the flanks by Rhodesia and the Portuguese territories of Mozambique and Angola, Zambia is Black Africa’s strategic frontier outpost nestled against the white‐ruled areas of southern Africa.

Mr. Kaunda himself has become an increasingly important voice in the politics of the non aligned world. In domestic affairs, however, Zambia has had no problem more persistent or difficult than that of tribalism.

The weak but vociferous African National Congress party, an opposition group, has been able to hold on to about 20 percent of the seats in Parliament although it has no patronage and few political assets. The reason is that it can always count on the ethnic support of several southern tribes that have not wavered in their stubborn loyalty.

But tribalism is at least as intense within President Kaunda’s own dominating United National Independence party.

Mr. Kaunda himself has been impervious to tribal prejudices, partly because of an accident of birth. Although he was born in what is now Zambia, his father was from neighboring, Nyasaland (now Malawi) and Mr. Kaunda belongs to no local tribe.

President Concedes Error

Discusing tribal politics in the interview, the President said: “It was my fault in many ways.”

Mr. Kaunda was empowered by the national Constitution to handpick his own Vice President but, eager to promote democracy, he decided prior to conference of his party in 1967 that the man elected deputy party leader would be installed in the Vice Presidency—a decision he now calls “a clear mistake.”

At the 1967 conference the Bemba language speakers, who comprise about 35 per cent of the population and are the largest linguistic group, moved with unexpected skill to form an alliance with some other tribal groups to elect a Bemba, Simon Kapwepwe, the deputy leader and thus Vice President.

The conference almost ended in violence and many Zambians were shocked by the conniving, insults and disorder that had occurred.

Politicians from other tribal groups were at first stunned, but quickly began to work to demolish the new Bemba power. With considerable speed they dismantled the alliance that had brought Mr. Kapwepwe into office.

Vice President Loses Post

The Bembas seemed demoralized and shocked by the sudden turn of fortunes and the growing solidarity against them. Mr. Kapwepwe offered his resignation in 1969, saying that his fellow tribesmen were being persecuted, and by 1970 he had been eased out of the Vice Presidency and into the Ministry of Local Government.

Conflict persisted, however. Secret party committees were formed and met clandestinely to find ways to harass and discredit one another.

To an extent difficult to measure, this strife hampered orderly administration of government. Many observers think it hampered development and planning. There seems no question that it led to nepotism and insecurity in the public service.

President Kaunda, whose hair has become specked with gray, said this year so much time had been wasted on political backstabbing that it was “impossible for some leaders to spend as much as two hours out of eight a day discharging the responsibilities of their office.”

Violent Outbreaks Feared

The main fear, however, was not so much that tribalism hampered good government as that it might erupt into outright violence if left unchecked. At one point Mr. Kapwepwe faced the prospect of precipitating violence if ever he tried to speak in one section of the nation.

Late last year the temperature rose again when Bembas charged that several cabinet ministers were being shielded from prosecution for corruption because of tribal favoritism. In a lurid footnote they accused one non‐Bemba of having raped his secretary. Above all, they said that Bembas were being subjected to discrimination.

Mr. Kaunda suspended one Bemba, Mr. Chimba, from office and then flatly told high officials to stop attacking one another.

“During the past seven years since Independence, I have watched with dismay some leadership shortcomings on the part of some of my colleagues,” he said “That period has now come to an end. From now on there is no such thing as a tribal leader.”

The power of the Presidency in African countries is hard to exaggerate, and Mr. Kaunda has commanding national popularity. And much of the public has seemed as disgusted as he has been with the constant conflict.

Even so, most observers were surprised at the docility with which the warring factions accepted the President’s decision to muzzle them at this month’s party congress.

But by merely prohibiting political competition he may not have uprooted the emotions and ambitions that fed it. The Times of Zambia, which is politically nonaffiliated, called the conference a clear success but added: “There are cynics who may feel, and some of them would have good reasons, that the abrupt ending of the conference only postponed a day of reckoning which is bound to or later.”

Mr. Kaunda said in the interview that he felt he must now move quietly to promote men “in whom I see trends that are national and not sectional.”

“If I don’t leave a leadership acceptable to all the people of Zambia, I will be a failure,” he said.

Meet Warrant Officer Class II (WOII) Mary Manda The Woman Sniper From The Zambia Army

MEET WOII THE WOMAN SNIPER FROM THE ZAMBIA ARMY

Going behind gender lines, Warrant Officer Class II (WOII) Manda Mary was among the troops from the Zambia Amy that were deployed in an operation to gun down the infamous Mailoni brothers, Mika, Fabian, and Stephano.

The recurring murders in Central Province between 2007 and 2013 prompted authorities to combine defence and security efforts to close the evil chapter of the serial killers, who terrified the people of Luano Valley.

However, before becoming WOII Manda Mary, she was born on October 6, 1984, in Chingola, and years later went on to pursue her primary education at Chalata Primary School.

She then went on to complete her secondary education at Ibolelo, where she managed to get a grade twelve certificate.

And on April 1st, 2005, after seven months of vigorous training at Munkulungwe Training Area in Tag Argan, Ndola, WOII Manda became a soldier, ready to defend and serve the people of Zambia.

After her pass out, she was sent to 3ZR, Chindwin Barracks, in Kabwe, as her first unit at the rank of private. A few months later, she was taken to the Military Training Establishment of Zambia to pursue a Skill at Arms course, which later made her an instructor in the unit during the regimentation of new soldiers.

She also went on to pursue a sniper course in preparation for the tasks she would encounter in her line of duty as she progressed in her military career.

At the rank of corporal, WOII Manda was a sniper and an instructor, two challenging roles for any soldier.

A sniper is a military marksman who engages a weapon to attack far-away targets. They typically possess advanced training and are armed with highly precise weapons, and they spend most of their days training and preparing to be deployed at any time.

In 2013, after about 8 years of service, she was selected as one of the troops that had been called upon to cease the dreadful murder spree of the Mailoni brothers.

It is believed that the Mailoni brothers forcibly displaced hundreds of families out of fear of becoming victims of the trio’s killing spree.

She explained that the hardest part about the operation was that the locals would tell stories of superstitions surrounding the trio and how so many people had traveled to try and end the unrelenting torment.

However, WOII Manda says despite being told about all these stories that cannot be proved scientifically or were beyond human understanding, she and her team managed to focus on their goal, which was to kill and bring an end to the misery of Luano people.

With the valley being one of the areas that had remained isolated largely due to a poor road network, foot patrolling was the only means the troops would use.

Having grown up in Luano Valley, the brothers were masters of their environment; this posed a challenge to troops as they would not carry out other operational duties such as escort duty and conducting patrols.

“Sometimes the locals would tell us that the Mailoni brothers were here and that they headed in a certain direction; we would follow footprint trails, but we would discover that they were heading in the opposite direction of their footprints,” she narrates.

Finally, several factors conspired against the brothers as new tactics were adopted, and these included adopting civil attire to masquerade as locals.

The long hunt for the Mailoni brothers came to an end on June 24, 2013, when a Zambia Army soldier, sent together on the mission with WOII Mary managed to shoot down the trio, marking the end of the notorious trio.

At a distance, the killings may have been seen as an exaggerated myth, but for Joe Shapela, at the rank of private (Pte), what was perceived as impossible for the people of Luano Valley.

On that day, Pte Shapela was informed by villagers that they had seen the Mailoni brothers’ footprints, and the soldiers tracking them.

Pte Shapela and his colleagues eventually came face to face with the Mailoni, who were charging at them with spears, but fortunately, Pte Shapela was quick to pull his trigger, knocking the brothers to the ground.

Legend has it that their mother, who had fled Kabwe in fear for her own life from her sons, availed herself after they were shot dead to identify their bodies.

As the tragic chapter of the trio came to an end, the expedition to arrest the brothers and the lapses in security are clear indications that the police service should strengthen their manhunting procedures to avoid the longevity of manhunts of this kind.

Her zeal to pursue further missions is packed with the bare essentials of life, despite the risks and hardships that come with going to war or delivering sanity to local communities where peace is threatened.

WOII Manda was sent out on another challenging mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) under the Zambian Battalion 4 (ZAMBATT 4) in 2018, where she was deployed as a protection force, making her the only woman sniper among the troops.

As a sniper, she played an important role in being on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or persons that would try to attack ZAMBATT or threaten peace in the area.

“We rotated with other snipers with our sniper rifles night and day.”

“Our main task was to monitor certain areas to deal with enemies in armoured vehicles.”

She is currently in Mongu Western Province on an operation called Kozo, living up to her mandate as a soldier to defend the integrity and sovereignty of Mother Zambia.

With all her strength, she juggles motherhood and being a soldier and executes all her duties with the utmost professionalism and valour.

A skilled sniper, WOII Manda takes pride in her ability to use any kind of weapon, including heavy machine guns.

THE KWACHA AND DE-DOLLARISATION- Antonio Mwanza

THE KWACHA AND DE-DOLLARISATION

By Antonio Mourinho Mwanza

1. What is De-dollarisation?

Dedollarisation is “a process of substituting US dollar as the currency used for (i) trading oil and/ or other commodities (i.e. petrodollar), (ii) buying US dollars for the forex reserves, (iii) bilateral trade agreements, and (iv) dollar-denominated assets.”

2. Major economies in the world including Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa (BRICS), the Eurozone and France have begun the process of de-dollarisation. These countries are now using other currencies such as the Yuan, Roubles, Rupees etc and not the dollar for bilateral and multilateral trade.

This process was triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war after the imposition of economic sanctions by the western block against Russia.

During his recent visit to China, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticised the US dollar’s role in the world economy and urged the BRICS and other nations to de-dollarise. Equally, French President Emmanuel Macron while visiting China joined the chorus, emphasising that Europe must move away from the use of the U.S. dollar.

More countries are now ganging up to stop America’s hegemony of the global economy and international trade by moving away from their dependence on the dollar a unit of trade or medium of exchange.

3. The process of De-dollarisation has resulted into reduced demand for the dollar as more and more countries are now using other currencies to buy and sell strategic commodities such as oil and gas.

It goes without saying that this move is making the dollar to lose its value in a lot of countries, Zambia included. This coupled with the tax-payments for the first quota, the IMF Staff-Level Agreement on the First Review of the Extended Credit Facility, depressed economic activities which has resulted in very little demand for the dollar as very few people are trading, as well as the decision by the Central Bank to tighten liquidity through the increased Statutory Reserve Ratio and the Monetary Policy Rate have contributed to the bullish Kwacha as the demand for the dollar continue to dwindle.

4. Despite the numerous advantages of dedollarisation, there are several risks and pitfalls that must be overcome. The process of disposing the ascendant dependency on the U.S dollar requires concerted and coordinated efforts from a myriad of key stakeholders, including central banks, financial institutions, and the private sector. Further, the unfolding of alternative reserve currencies requires the development of substantial liquid financial markets as well as the establishment of credible and transparent policy mechanisms.

Precedingly, de-dollarisation may entail distortions on the international market and can heighten volatility in financial markets hence the urgent need for concerted and coordinated efforts to avoid disruptions and distortions in financial markets as well as guarantee stability of individual nation’s currencies.

State requests for second opinion on abductor Bwalya’s mental state

State requests for second opinion on abductor Bwalya’s mental state

THE State has disputed the findings of a psychiatrist at Chainama Hills Hospital that one of the men accused of abducting, raping and assaulting 13 women in Lusaka, James Bwalya, is not fit to stand trial, due to a conduct disorder, yet he has no mental illness.

State advocate Bob Mwewa has since requested Lusaka High Court judge Charles Kafunda to order for a second opinion on Bwalya’s mental state.

In this matter, Bwalya and his co-accused, Matthews Sikaonga, are charged with 54 counts of aggravated robbery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, prohibition of trafficking in humans for purposes of sexual exploitation, rape and abduction.

Dr Patrick Msoni, a consultant psychiatrist, told the court that Bwalya has an anti-social personality disorder and that he is not fit to stand trial.

He said based on the psychiatric evaluation, Bwalya’s developmental history revealed that the accused developed a conduct disorder whilst in secondary school, as he was aggressive towards other pupils and usually bullied them.

Dr Msoni explained that Bwalya would abuse alcohol and cannabis and the conduct disorder “graduated to having anti-social personality disorder and as of now, because of this disorder which is deeply ingrained, he’s not fit to stand trial.”

During cross examination by Mwewa, Dr Msoni said Bwalya denied having committed the offences during his mental examination and that people with such a disorder do not stick to their word and lie a lot.

When asked if lying is a mental illness, Dr Msoni denied.

He clarified that Bwalya is not mentally unsound but that during his mental assessment, he gave different statements, smiled uncontrollably, hence his conclusion that Bwalya does not understand nor appreciate the charges against him or consult a with reasonable degree of rational understanding.

The psychiatrist said Bwalya’s co-accused Sikaonga is fit to stand trial as he has no mental disorder or illness.

He said during secondary school, Sikaonga joined a peer group and that they bullied other pupils, abused cannabis and alcohol, and absented himself from school.

“He grew out of it and managed to get satisfactory Grade 12 results. He enrolled in colleges and fell out in second year upon meeting his school mate (Bwalya),” said Dr Msoni.

Earlier, Dr Brian Sokontwe, a consultant surgeon and spine specialist at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), said according to the physical examination that he conducted on Bwalya, he established that the accused’s spine was dislocated due to a deformity at the junction of the thoracic and lumbar spine.

Dr Sokontwe said Bwalya sustained a spinal cord injury when he fell from a five metre brick wall in an attempt to break free from Mwembeshi Correctional Facility.

He said according to Bwalya’s explanation, the latter could not walk after his “Humpty Dumpty” fall as he had bowel and bladder dysfunction for a week.

He said Bwalya staggered and was aided to walk by Sikaonga.

“I examined his back and I discovered he had a deformity at the junction of the thoracic spine (vertebrae area) and the lumbar spine (backbone). He was tender in the region of the deformity (Kyphotic deformity), the shape of the spine has changed instead of bending forward, it’s bending backwards,” Dr Solontwe said.

“I did a neurological exam and discovered he had reduced sensation on the left side in the region of the thigh. I tested the strength in the upper and lower limbs; he had weekness in the lower limb one grade lower than the normal.”

Dr Sokontwe further explained that the X-ray showed that Bwalya had a near dislocation at lumbar spine one and two and a fracture in the bone of lumber spine two and the stabiliser of the spine in the region of deformity were disrupted.

He proposed that Bwalaya’s anatomy in the the spinal region need to be restored in order to stabilise the spine, because leaving it untreated could cause instability, excessive pain and further damage to the spinal code and other neural elements.

“The patient has not been strictly under bed rest in this case we should proceed with the time remaining to complete the six weeks of the bed rest. He has to do two weeks of the bed rest, then we are going to do another physical exam and X-ray before we can start to walk him again,” suggested Dr Sokontwe.

Mwewa asked the court to direct that Bwalya answers to the charges pursuant to Section 17 and 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) since he has no mental illness as indicated in the medical report that all his mental faculties were functional.

Bwalya’s lawyer Osborne Ngoma opposed the application, saying the psychiatric evaluation was clear that his client is not fit to undergo trial and the same may not be just, for failure to follow the proceedings as well as understanding and appreciating the charges.

“It is not incumbent upon us the legal gurus to trail in the mental field and offer our opinion but it is incumbent upon the medical gurus such as Dr Msoni to provide an opinion which is an expert opinion. And we have revarrage to analysis and follow that medical expert opinion,” said Ngoma.

In response, Mwewa proposed that the court orders for a second opinion on Bwalya’s mental examination by another psychiatrist.

“The State is asking the court to make a determination of the reports submitted and not only focus on the conclusion as submitted by the defence. The court should request for a second opinion,” said Mwewa.

Judge Kafunda adjourned the matter to tomorrow for a determination on the medical report and a directive on the request for a second opinion.

The case is ongoing, and the public is waiting to see how it unfolds in court. Whatever the outcome, it serves as a reminder that crime does not pay, and that one’s actions have consequences.

We elected a dumb person who is always quiet in parliament – Kapoche headman

We elected a dumb person who is always quiet in parliament – Kapoche headman

By Richard Luo in Sinda

HEADMAN Seba Kezala says handouts do not change the face of communities.

In interview, Kezala whose real name is Paul Zimba said Kapoche Constituency remains undeveloped because some politicians give out handouts like jackets to traditional leaders instead of the required development projects.

“…we want someone who is able to bring development to Kapoche, we want someone who will speak for us in parliament. As at the moment we elected a dumb person who is always quiet in parliament. Let’s go and vote for someone who will take our Kapoche at another level the way it’s done in Sinda Constituency. That MP (Masauso Tembo) is very helpful,” he said.

Kezala said the area frequires a leader who will be able to wave at them when he is passing with a vehicle and humble towards the electorate.

“We don’t want to vote for someone who fails to wave at us when he is passing. Prior to elections we received jackets from political aspirants, we received salaula jackets as village headmen as we were called at the palace only to be given salaula jackets; those of K15, K22 we were given in exchange for the votes. This time we don’t want a candidate to call us to give us jackets, we want development; our expectation is development for our area,” Kezala said.

He warned Eric Mwale is seeking parliamentary office in 2026 that whatever he will donate should not be a guarantee that people will vote for him.

Kezala recalled that prior to the 2021 elections a vehicle was donated in the area by someone to help during funerals but to date development has not been shown.

“For example, I hear Eric Mwale who also stood in 2021 wants to donate a vehicle to help in Kapoche, we want to tell him that never should he think a vehicle will attract votes, no! We want him to dedicate himself to work for people such as providing strong bridges, helping affairs in clinics, hospitals and not that a vehicle will make people vote for him,’’ said Kezala. “…if he wants to stand on UPND ticket for us to vote for him, that will make him lose. Let him come with help to the communities and depending on the party it’s nothing at all because the party in government is not popular here so ngati oganiza zakuti a paname pa boma akuyoluza (if he wants to stand on the ruling party he will lose) UPND is not popular in Kapoche constituency.”

Meanwhile, headman M’nendwe Fazili Daka bemoaned non-operation of a clinic in his area.

He narrated how the community constructed a clinic with the help from government, with a staff house and toilets all set but government is failing to commission it.

“We are appealing to the current government to open the clinics which we have here called Kafunde Clinic. Toilets and staff houses are there but it’s not opened; it’s a challenge for us to access medical services. We ask government to put efforts and open it, we also ask it to ensure drugs are made available in these health facilities because even if we go to Sinda or Nyanje some drugs we are told to go and buy,” Daka said.

He accused current member of parliament Luckson Lungu of not being available to the electorate to hear their problems for him to present them in parliament.

“Kapoche is one constituency which is lagging behind in development and if we talk about the MP we chose he is nowhere to be seen. So, that’s a reason why Kapoche in 2026 should elect someone who knows it better; if possible people should go for an indigenous citizen of the constituency,” said Daka.

Last week Saturday, Lungu told Christians at Mbwindi Catholic Church not to pay attention to those that accuse him of being quiet because he is always in Lusaka attending parliamentary sittings while fighting for development.

“Don’t listen to those who will come saying I’m not seen. Yes, the constituency is vast and I can’t be everywhere. I am always in Lusaka fighting for development. And for your own information, we will soon receive a grader which will be used to work on our roads, but someone is busy saying I’m not seen.”

Zambia Economic Performance for First Quarter, 2023 – An Objective Analysis

By Mwansa Chalwe Snr

This economic analysis is mainly targeted at ordinary Zambian citizens, who are unable to understand the technical language contained in the other commentaries available on the market. It is an independent analysis, which tries to be as non-technical as possible, and without any political bias. The contents of the analysis is evidence based, not from hear say. This article should be able to debunk the many misleading commentaries about the economy on social media. It is also hoped that it will enlighten citizens about how the economy performed for the period Jan 1 to March 31, 2023.

IMF PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Zambia’s economic performance has been praised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team, led by Ms. Allison Holland, Mission Chief for Zambia, who visited Zambia from March 30 to April 6, 2023, using their performance indicators.

“Against an increasingly challenging global economic backdrop, the Zambian economy remains relatively resilient, with robust growth of 4.7 percent in 2022 despite weaknesses in the mining and agriculture sectors. Inflation has remained in single digits since May 2022 but is under increasing pressure with the sustained depreciation of the exchange rate.” the statement stated. “While growth is expected to moderate to 3.6 percent in 2023, assuming a timely agreement with official creditors on an appropriate debt treatment, it is projected to accelerate over the medium term.”

The IMF positive and upbeat assessment of the performance of the Zambian economy is, however, at variance with many commentators, and not shared by ordinary Zambians. The alternative view of the performance of the economy is outlined below.

INFLATION AND COST LIVING

Zambian inflation accelerated in March to 9.9%, from 9.6% in February,2023 due to the kwacha depreciation slide, largely driven by the country’s delayed debt restructuring talks. The sliding Kwacha has pushed up the prices of imports such as fuel. The increased inflation was reflected in the high cost of living including of the staple food mealie meal as well as the high cost of doing business.

In February, 2023, the cost of living for a family of five in Lusaka as measured by the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) Basic Needs and Nutrition Basket (BNNB) was K9, 278.06 compared to K 8,982.82 in December, 2022 which is an increase of K 295.24 or 3.3%.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES AND JOB CREATION

Zambia’s economic activities continue to be subdued. In the first quarter of 2023, there has been a drop in private sector economic activities, and this is supported by empirical evidence provided from the Stanbic Purchasing Manager Index (PMI) for March, 2023. The index measures private sector purchasing activity, output and employment. Any index below 50 indicates poor performance of private sector activity. The Stanbic Bank Zambia PMI fell to 46.9 in March, 2023 compared to 49.1 in December, 2022.
“The latest reading pointed to a renewed decline in the country’s private sector activity that was the most pronounced since September 2020 .Renewed falls in output and new orders were recorded, amid widespread reports of money shortages, price pressures and lower customer numbers. Subsequently, firms scaled back employment and purchasing activity,” The Stanbic Purchasing Manager Index of March, 2023 report stated.

The reduced economic activities have resulted in the deterioration of unemployment. The country is simply not creating jobs. And instead, it is shedding jobs. It is difficult to find any convincing initiative that one can point to, which is a source of creation of critical mass jobs.

FINANCIAL MARKETS PERFORMANCE

Zambia’s three main components of the financial markets are: the money market, foreign exchange market (Forex) and the capital markets. This analysis is restricted to the money and forex markets.

The government was having difficulties in raising money from the local market through Treasury Bills during the first quarter. The last auction of the Bank of Zambia on 23 March, 2023, performed badly. The Central bank sold K797.7million worth of treasury bills when the target was K1.3billion. The interest rate for the bills ranged from 9.5% for 30 days and 15.75% for one year.

During the quarter under review, Bank of Zambia increased its Monetary Policy Rate to 9.25%.This rate is supposed to be the benchmark to guide Commercial Banks in setting their interest rates. In Zambia, Banks hardly respond to this benchmark, especially when it is going down, by reducing their interest rates. The current Zambia Commercial Banks average lending interest rates is about 25 %, but if you want to save money, they will pay you in the range of 6-10% interest rate.

On basis of experience of operating in three foreign markets – United Kingdom, South Africa and Botswana – the ritual of setting the monetary policy rate in Zambia, does not seem save much purpose to an ordinary Zambians, as the Commercial banks do not significantly respond to it. This is clearly evidence of a market failure in the banking industry in Zambia. There is need for some intervention by government in conjunction with Bank of Zambia without necessarily compromising the free market principles.

Zambia should remember that even the USA, the citadel of capitalism, they introduced the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, in response to financial industry misbehaviour that led to the financial crisis of 2007–2008. Also, in Brazil, the government enacted Law 10735(2003) which required compulsory allocation of 2% of demand deposits of commercial banks, to provide credit to micro and small enterprises (MSEs) following the failure of banks to provide finance to small businesses. This measure resulted in a boom of MSEs, and created millions of jobs. And so, the public should not buy the old and tired argument that we are a free market, and so we should let market forces reign. Markets have do fail, and at some point need to be regulated.

On the basis of available evidence, therefore, Zambian Banks do not seem to be working in the best interests of the economy, but rather in its foreign shareholders only. They are making money from borrowing risk free money from the government and providing very little credit for the private sector.

The Kwacha performed poorly during the quarter. In March, 2023 it was ranked the worst-performing African currency among those tracked by Bloomberg. On 4th October, 2022, the Kwacha was K15.78 per dollar, but at 30th March, 2023, it was K21.42 which was a loss in value of 36%. These losses have pushed up the price of imports such as fuel, food stuffs and industry raw materials. According to the Bank of Zambia, the losses have been due to limited dollar supply as a result of subdued inflows and heightened demand. Foreign investors in the domestic markets have also been divesting due to the negative sentiment associated with the protracted debt restructuring negotiations, and the uncertainty around the treatment of non-resident holders of government securities.

RECOMMENDED IMMEDIATE ACTION BY THE PRESIDENT

There is generally some despondency among a large sections of the Zambian population about the current economic conditions. There is a need to restore hope and confidence in Zambians, which has been eroded by the various unforced errors that created avoidable crisis. There is uncertainty in the air, and many Zambians are unsure about the direction that the country is taking.

The Presidency provides incumbents with a bully pulpit which they could use to inspire hope, change hearts and minds. Many Presidents around the world, use it to regularly communicate with the electorate directly, and formally from time to time. On basis of past experience, especially under the late President Kenneth Kaunda, there is a need for President Hakainde Hichilema to address the nation, where he can make some major pronouncements. There have been too many issues in the last eighteen months that have happened, and one can hardly remember how many times he has addressed the nation to give feedback or show the nation the direction the country is taking.

The speech should be part of the follow up to his promise last year to remove rigidities in the economy, as well as his intention to focus more on the local economy in 2023, by spending more time in Zambia. In the speech, he should announce the short term, practical and convincing low hanging fruit interventions to increase economic activities to kick start economic recovery. He should also include an announcement of a comprehensive, practical and credible road map for Youth job creation in the short, medium and long terms, covering all the three main youth demographics. The other possible theme of the speech, could be our relationship with China. The speech could help in further signalling to the Chinese about our non-alignment policy, and thereby speed up our restructuring deal.

CONCLUSION

There is no way of sugar coating Zambia’s economic performance in the first quarter of 2023. It was quite poor. The optics of people queuing up for mealie meal due to shortages, so soon after the unexpected recurrence of load shedding, was shocking and mind boggling. Both events occurred after being assured that the Country was self-sufficient in power and the staple food; and was even exporting to neighbouring countries. This should be a wakeup call on several levels, including risk Management and human capital management.

The summary diagnosis of the first quarter performance, is that the both the cost of living and doing business went up, unemployment was increasing, borrowing interests rates were unaffordable and there was shortage of liquidity in the economy. However, in spite of these negatives, it would be disingenuous for anybody to claim that the economic wheels of Zambia have come off. The country’s economic prospects for improvement are still quite high, especially if the debt restructuring is sorted out, and it is accompanied by other common sense interventions to the grow economy, rather than rely on trickle down policies. When one looks at the current trend in economic growth, the economic growth rate in 2022 was 4.7% compared to 4.6% in 2021.The prospects for economic growth are quite good with the expected recovery of the mining, agriculture and construction sector. The Ministry of finance has even revised the 2023 growth rate to 5.4% from the 4% in the budget.

PAMELA CHISUMPA ABDUCTOR NOT FIT TO STAND TRIAL

By New Dawn Reporter
A 76-year-old Psychiatrist doctor from Chainama Hills Mental Hospital (CHMH) has testified that one of Pamela Chisumpa’s abductor is not fit to stand trial before the courts of law.

Chainama Hills Mental Hospital Psychiatrist Consultant, Dr. Patrick Msoni says James Bwalya has an anti-social personality disorder which makes him lie and behave in a manner where he doesn’t exhibit remorse.

He said although he exhibited such anti-social personality which makes him unfit to stand trial, James was aware about the charges he was facing before the court, adding that he dismissed the seriousness of the allegations during the time he was examining him.

Dr. Msoni further said when he was attending to James, he told him that he never committed the whole charges as alleged.
“But they change stories, they like lying. Lying is not a medical illness, I am not also suggesting that he has a mental illness, he is not a mental patient, He worked as a sells man for two years ago,” Dr. Msoni told the High Court.

Dr, Msoni also informed court that James developed the bad behaviour while in secondary school which graduated when he went to college, adding that his personality disorder is engraved making him not fit to stand trial.

Another doctor from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Dr. Brian Sonkwe, a Consultant for Episodic Spine Surgeon said he examined James who had a bowel and bladder dysfunction as a result of an injury he sustained after an attempt to escape from prison by way of climbing the wall fence.

“In the history I was told that the patient sustained an injury to the back after a fall as he was attempting to jump over the wall fence on the 12th March, 2023. When the patient fell, he could not pick himself up and walk, “he said.

Dr. Sonkwe explained that according to his physical examination and findings on James, he had a deformity at the junction of the lumbar spine, and that he had reduced feelings and weakness in the lower part of his body.

He explained that James exhibited disruption in the spine region as a result of the injuries he sustained.

He further said that his recommendation was to the effect that he needed bed rest but James has been moving.

Dr. Sonkwe said as a result of that, he could not stand trial until further assessment have been done.

On Mathews Sikaonga, both doctors declared him fit to stand trial.

However, the state had asked court to order for another medical opinion whether James can stand trial.

This is in a matter where Siakonga and James are facing charges of rape, aggravated robbery, theft and abduction involving 13 women of Lusaka kept in Chalala,

Thabo Bester’s getaway Mercedes-Benz gathering dust in Zimbabwe

The posh Mercedes-Benz, which was hired by Dr Nandipha Magudumana, and used by her fugitive lover Thabo Bester in an attempt to cross the border into Zimbabwe is still stuck on the Zimbabwean side of the border, where it is clamped.

Zimbabwe’s state-owned “Sunday News” reported that the car, reportedly worth over R3 million, was impounded by law enforcement agents at the busy border last year, and has been gathering dust since.

According to the report, the car was impounded after a Zimbabwean man identified as Sicelo Ndlovu removed its South African registration plates and replaced them with yellow Zimbabwean plates.

The was part of a process to facilitate the vehicle’s entry into Zimbabwe.

Ndlovu was caught in the act and arrested, but “Sunday News” reported that the 36-year-old was later acquitted on a charge of smuggling.

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) was holding on to the Mercedes-Benz pending further legal action, the report said.

Last week Independent Media reported that fugitives Bester and Magudumana were arrested in Arusha, Tanzania while they were allegedly driving to the Kenyan border.

It is believed that the two lovebirds entered Tanzania at the Namanga border crossing, a one-stop border post, with about 16 000 people. The crossing is often used by car smugglers, human traffickers and drug dealers.

A Mozambican national, Zakaria Alberto, was also arrested for allegedly trying to help Bester and Magudumana and it is strongly believed that he was their designated driver. Bester and Magudumana had been on the run for almost two weeks after it was revealed that the escaped convict was hiding in a R12-million mansion in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Bester, who was serving a 30-year sentence, escaped from the Mangaung maximum security prison on May 3, 2022 after faking his death by burning an unidentified body in a cell fire.

Magudumana reportedly fetched the burnt corpse from Mangaung and tried to cremate it, but it was later confiscated by police who suspected foul play.

After the jailbreak, IOL reported that it was believed that Bester and Magudumana had checked themselves into a hotel in Durban hours after the escape and that the booking was made by one of their friends.

Seven days later, on May 10, 2022, Magudumana hired the black Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, with an offer to purchase it for R1.7 million from an uMhlanga car dealership not far from the hotel. Bester was going to use the car to skip the country the following day. Once in Zimbabwe he was supposed to lie low.

Unfortunately for him, the car was impounded at the Beitbridge border post after its driver, Ndlovu, was allegedly caught red-handed replacing the car’s South African registration plates with Zimbabwean ones.

Bester, who was being smuggled through illegal posts from South Africa on foot to join his driver on the Zimbabwean side as he did not have a passport, came face to face with soldiers patrolling the border. One of his smugglers was shot but survived.

Bester and his accomplices escaped.

“Sunday Independent” reported that Bester stayed in Zimbabwe for a few days and was forced to return to South Africa after Magudumana allegedly failed to pay the Zimbabwean smugglers who were looking after him.

On his return to South Africa, Bester booked himself into a hotel in Ballito from June 11 to 14, 2022. Bester and Magudumana later rented the mansion in Hyde Park, north of Johannesburg, for R40 000 a month. They had a domestic worker and gardener from Zimbabwe who have since vanished.

The couple stayed in Hyde Park incognito until the news about Bester’s existence broke and they fled to the same hotel where they hid for a few days. Again, the room was booked by one of their friends.

The couple left the hotel in a black SUV minutes before police raided the establishment and fled to Mozambique, where they stayed for a few days before proceeding to Tanzania, where they were arrested.

THABO BESTER EXTRADITED TO SOUTH AFRICA: ‘MALAWI SHOULD GIVE US BUSHIRI’

THABO BESTER EXTRADITED TO SOUTH AFRICA: ‘MALAWI SHOULD GIVE US BUSHIRI’

Tanzania has extradited to South Africa convicted rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester, and his alleged partner-in-crime, Dr Nandipha Magudumana.

The extradition, concluded within a week, has ignited calls in South Africa for Malawi to follow in the footsteps of Tanzania by handing over Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary to face money laundering, fraud and corruption charges.

Thabo Bester used Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms to lure women who he raped. he was convicted to life with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years. He is informally known as the Facebook rapist.

But in May 2022, Thabo Bester staged a ‘successful’ prison break at Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein. He faked “suicide by setting himself alight in his cell”.

However, a comprehensive investigation by GroundUp discovered evidence suggesting that Thabo Bester did not die in the fire but used it as cover for his prison break.

A post-mortem conducted on the body found in the cell believed to be Thabo Bester revealed that the person was dead before the fire broke out.

The notorious criminal was residing in Sandton where he was running another fraudulent business to con people. Through his business, he continued to target other young women.

Government only confirmed that Thabo Bester had escaped from prison in March this year after GroundUp had published photographs of the rapist and his wife, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, shopping in Sandton last June.

On 7 April 2023, Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana were arrested in Tanzania. The fugitives landed at Lanseria Airport in South Africa at 04:00 this morning.

Their extradition has taken less than a week to finalise, igniting calls in South Africa for Malawi to emulate Tanzania by extraditing Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Prophetess Mary Bushiri who are wanted to face charges of fraud and money laundering.

“Can South Africa Police use the same energy their used in bringing Thabo Bester & Dr Nandipha from Tanzania to bring crooked Bushiri back to South Africa so that he can face AmaPiano. Bushiri destroyed many lives in South Africa. Bushiri has 3 pending warrants of arrest for rape” tweeted @AdvoBarryRoux.

“SAPS will now hold press briefings, irritating us as if they made the arrest They can’t even arrest criminals roaming the streets. Thabo Bester escaped under their watch. Nandipha and Bester fled the country without being detected, like Bushiri. SA law enforcement is a JOKE” tweeted @_AfricanSoil.

“If its wasn’t for us ordinary SAs who hyped this story up, and made sure that we pressurise those in power. These criminals would be free even today. Job weldone to SAs. No Bushiri must be next! #DrNandiphaMagudumana kgosi Mampuru MacG chriselder Woolworths” @madaliso_muyeye wrote on Twitter.

Following the extradition of the two fugitives, Ministers responsible for Justice and Correctional Services and Police Ronald Lamola and Bheki Cele said South Africa “will endeavour to emulate this level of co-operation with other countries in areas of mutual legal assistance and related matters”. Body of missing South African woman found in septic tank with multiple stab wounds a week after she went missing

The Free State police in South Africa have opened a murder case after the body of a missing woman, Mookgo Felli Ramateletse, was found in the septic tank in her yard.

The remains of 33-year-old Ramateletse were found on Sunday, April 16, almost a week after she was reported missing by her husband.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, Ramateletse from Boiketlo Village in Qwaqwa had been missing since April 10, 2023.

The woman is reported to have last spoken to her husband by telephone on the day of her disappearance. However, when he arrived home she was nowhere to be found.

Mophiring said Ramateletse was found with multiple stab wounds to her body.

“The police and Maluti-a-Phofung rescue and fire department retrieved the body of a missing woman, Mookgo Felli Ramateletse, from a septic tank in her yard with multiple stab wounds at about 1.30pm after she was positively identified by her husband, who reported her missing,” he said.

“On Sunday, April 16, 2023, Namahadi police, the Station Commander, Phuthaditjhaba Crime Intelligence, Phuthaditjhaba K9 Unit, Phuthaditjhaba Public Order Police and Namahadi Vispol formed a search team looking for the missing person in the Boiketlo area. Inside her yard, where she was staying and running a business, the police found a pair of slippers and lipstick inside the half-opened septic tank.

“Maluti-a-Phofung Fire and Emergency Medical Services units were immediately summoned to the scene to investigate the septic tank. On their arrival at the scene, they inspected the sewage tank and discovered a woman’s body,” Mophiring said.

Police said the body was identified by her husband, Moeketsi Joseph Ramateletse.

“She was dressed in black track pants and a pink track top. Her upper body had multiple stab wounds. A case of murder is being investigated and no arrest has been made as yet. Police investigations continue,” Mophiring said.

Police have urged anyone with information that could lead to an arrest and conviction of suspects to come forward and contact Namahadi police.

Fighting in Sudan becoming worse; students being trapped, and hospitals and diplomats are being bombarded

Students at the University of Khartoum in Sudan‘s capital have been confined inside campus buildings for more than three days as gunfire and artillery fire have been raining down around them.

The country has been gripped by fierce fighting between the army and a paramilitary group since it broke out on Saturday. The university area is a particularly hotspot because of its proximity to the General Command of the Armed Forces, where warplanes are circling overhead and nearby buildings are on fire.

Al-Muzaffar Farouk, 23, one of 89 students, faculty members, and staff taking refuge inside the university library, said, “It is frightening that our country will turn into a battlefield overnight.”

Food and water are running low, but leaving is not an option – one student has already been killed by gunfire outside. Khalid Abdulmun’em had been trying to run to the library from a nearby building when he was struck, said Farouk.

The students retrieved his body and brought it inside “despite the bullets that were falling on us,” he added.

The university confirmed Abdulmun’em’s death in a Facebook post, saying he had been shot in the campus’ surroundings. In a separate post on Monday, the university urged humanitarian organizations to help evacuate dozens of people stranded on campus.

Khartoum has been wracked by violence and chaos in a bloody tussle for power between Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s military leader, and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The two leaders have traded blame for instigating the fighting and breaking temporary ceasefires. Meanwhile, civilians are paying the price, with at least 180 people killed and 1,800 others injured, according to UN officials on Monday.

“I can see outside smoke rising from buildings. And I can hear from my residence blasts, heavy gunfire from outside. The streets are totally empty,” said Red Cross staffer Germain Mwehu from Khartoum.

“In the building where I stay, I saw families with children, children crying when there are airstrikes, children horrified,” Mwehu said, adding that people had little to no access to food or medicine given the fierce fighting outside.

Children are among those killed; a 6-year-old child died on Monday after the RSF shelled a hospital in Khartoum and damaged a maternity ward. Medics were forced to evacuate, leaving patients behind – some just newborns in incubators.

At least half a dozen hospitals have been struck by both warring sides, according to Sudan’s Doctors Trade Union.

Even diplomats and humanitarian workers have been targeted.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed there was an attack on a US diplomatic convoy on Monday.

“Yesterday, we had an American diplomatic convoy that was fired on. All of our people are safe, but this the action was reckless, it was irresponsible and, of course, unsafe,” Blinken said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The European Union ambassador to Sudan was also assaulted in his residency on Monday, though he is now doing fine, according to a spokesperson for the EU’s top diplomat.

And three workers from the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) were killed in the western region of Darfur, prompting the WFP to temporarily halt all services in the country.

In statements early Tuesday morning, the two rival factions pointed fingers at each other.

The RSF accused the army of conducting airstrikes on residential neighborhoods and of attacking the EU ambassador’s headquarters in Khartoum; meanwhile, the army accused the RSF of targeting the ambassador’s residency, and of targeting the WFP’s headquarters in Darfur.

The UN and various foreign leaders have called for peace, with Blinken speaking separately with Burhan and Dagalo on Tuesday.

Blinken “expressed his grave concern about the death and injury of so many Sudanese civilians,” and argued a ceasefire was necessary to deliver aid, reunify separated families, and ensure the safety of diplomatic and humanitarian staff, according to a readout from the US State Department.

In his own statement, Dagalo said the RSF “will have another call” to continue dialogue. Burhan’s office also confirmed he had spoken with Blinken about the critical situation in Sudan.

The foreign ministers of G7 nations, comprised of some of the world’s largest economies, urged the factions to “end hostilities immediately” in their joint statement from Japan on Tuesday.

Volker Perthes, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Sudan, said on Monday the organization has been trying to convince the two rival parties to “hold the fire” for a period of time, and asked them to protect embassies, UN offices, humanitarian and medical facilities.

Both sides had agreed to a three-hour ceasefire on Sunday, and again on Monday, with fighting resuming afterward, Perthes said.

But both Burhan and Dagalo have since accused the other of breaking that ceasefire.

When CNN spoke to Burhan on Monday afternoon, the sound of gunshots rang out in the background despite the supposed ceasefire – and Burhan claimed Dagalo had violated it for the second day.

A spokesperson for the RSF rebutted the accusation, claiming that they had been trying to abide by the ceasefire, but “they keep firing which leaves no choice” but for the RSF to “defend itself by firing back.”

KOFFI AND YO MAPS HAVE DIFFERENT MUSIC & FAN BASE

Authored By Mupishi Jones

When I told my 62 years old Uncle that Koffi Olomide was coming to play his rhumba music this month on 27 in the showgrounds,he went agog.He said it was a show worth spending his NAPSA partial access money on.Meanwhile my 21 years old university nephew bursted into laughter joining our conversation by introducing Yo Maps who’ll also be playing on the same day except in heroes stadium but both of them in Lusaka. This conversation triggered an argument between the son and the father.

I was listening, becoming interested in the supporting points mounted by each speaker.Later on I concluded that both Koffi and Yo Maps have different audiences based on the type of music and the age group.I realized that there are very few youths, especially below 30 years who would choose to spend their money to go and watch Koffi instead of Yo Maps.

Similarly, there are also very few from the old school age group beyond 50 years who would prefer to go and rub shoulders with the young “yo ballies”! Finally,my Uncle gave up the argument by telling his son that he was free to go and watch Yo Maps while he’ll be comfortable to go and mingle with his old school mates on a bottle of whiskey while revelling to Koffi’s old rhumba music in the showgrounds.

My Uncle disclosed that Koffi’s music, especially the old ones, takes him back into memory lane during his afternoon days of his life.He said it was alright for his son to go and listen to Yo Maps because when he’ll be 60 years, he’ll realize why he opted to go and watch Koffi 40 years ago, because at that time, he’ll also insist to go and watch Yo Maps the legend at 61! This could even remind him about this very argument we were having today.

I was left in limbo, because between the two, I’m sorry to say I’d choose none. However, if Don Carlos was to come and join the duo but him in Levy Mwanawasa stadium on the same date of Yo Maps and Koffi’s show, trust me I would drive all the way skunking to the copperbelt to watch Don Carlos.

Therefore, there’s no harm for both Koffi and Yo Maps playing on the same date in different places. To compare Yo Maps and Koffi is like asking which one is better between salt and sugar. Each of these have different tastes.
Let each one choose what one wants, but what is important is to enjoy responsibly,

Gold Mafia: Diplomatic immunities and privileges being abused to commit transnational organised crimes

0

A regional anti-corruption lobby group has called on the United Nations to investigate the abuse of diplomatic privileges to facilitate gold smuggling and illicit financial flow.

This follows the broadcasting of Al Jazeera ‘Gold Mafia’ documentary which laid bare how a web smuggled gold to Dubai and laundered money using State institutions.

The four part docu-series reveals Zimbabwe’s Ambassador At Large Uebert Mudzanire alias Angel as the face of a gold smuggling and money laundering in Zimbabwe.

Southern African Anti-Corruption Network in a statement said diplomats are abusing their privileges to commit crimes.

“Uebert Angel, the Presidential Envoy and Ambassador-at-large to Europe and the Americas since March 2021, was secretly filmed bragging that he could move $1.2bn easily, due to his diplomatic immunities and privileges.

“It has become evident that diplomatic immunities and privileges are being weaponized to commit transnational organised crimes by these organised syndicates.

“All allegations of illicit financial flows from Zimbabwe, including serious allegations of abuse of diplomatic immunity, illicit gold trading, corruption and money laundering in the mining sector need serious investigations by the authorities. We urge international bodies such as the United Nations (UN) to raise concerns when diplomatic immunities and privileges are abused to facilitate transnational organised crimes,” read the statement.

Angel is captured on camera by investigative reporters revealing how he uses his diplomatic privileges to waltz through security checkpoints without being checked and his connections in government to facilitate illegal deals.

The self-styled cleric has since denied the allegations claiming it was an act.

“The Government of Zimbabwe should strengthen mutual legal assistance with other involved jurisdictions to facilitate the exchange of information in dealing with all allegations raised by Al Jazeera. They must also ensure that such institutions in their respective countries have the capacity to manage mutual legal assistance requests.

“There is a need to strengthen security at Robert Mugabe International Airport to prohibit and sanction the smuggling of gold from Zimbabwe.

“Law enforcement, anti-corruption-agencies and regulatory authorities should immediately revoke gold trade and export licenses given to the implicated individuals and corporations, and freeze all their assets pending an investigation into the allegations.

“SAACON condemns selective application of the law in the freezing of assets of implicated individuals since it has gathered information that individuals such as Henrietta Rushwaya have been spared,” read the statement further.

Shooting of teenager who went to the wrong house to pick up siblings sparks protests

Protesters took to the streets after a homeowner shot and wounded a teenager who had gone to the wrong home to pick up his siblings in Kansas City, Missouri, police said Sunday.

Ralph Yarl, 16, was “shot twice and struck in the head and arm,” his family’s attorneys said in a statement.

Protesters marched as they chanted, “justice for Ralph” and “Black lives matter,” and carried signs reading, “Ringing a doorbell is not a crime” and “The shooter should do the time,” footage from CNN affiliate KMBC shows.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting on the evening of April 13 and arrived to find a teenager who had been shot by a homeowner outside a residence, according to Kansas City Police.

The teen was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition Sunday, police said.

“Despite the severity of his injuries and the seriousness of his condition, Ralph is alive and recovering,” civil rights attorneys S. Lee Merritt and Benjamin Crump, who have been retained by Yarl and his family, said in the statement.

Police learned the teenager’s parents had asked him to pick up his siblings at an address on 115th Terrace, but he accidentally went to a home on 115th Street, where he was shot.

“Ralph Yarl was picking up his younger brothers when he mistakenly rang the doorbell at the wrong house. A man shot Ralph twice and now he’s in critical condition. His family needs support during this tragedy,” Crump tweeted.

The homeowner – who has not been identified – was taken into custody and placed on a 24-hour hold, then released while police work to get a victim statement and gather more forensic evidence.

Under Missouri law, a person can be held for up to 24 hours for investigation of a felony, at which time they are required to be charged or released, Graves said at the news conference.

Attorneys for the wounded youth’s family issued a statement demanding “swift action from Clay County prosecutors and law enforcement to identify, arrest and prosecute to the full extent of the law the man responsible for this horrendous and unjustifiable shooting.”

Asked whether the shooting may have been racially motivated, the police chief said, “the information that we have now, it does not say that that is racially motivated. That’s still an active investigation. But as a chief of police, I do recognize the racial components of this case.”

Graves sought to assure the Kansas City community Sunday the police department is committed to the case.

“We recognize the frustration this can cause in the entire criminal justice process. The women and men of the Kansas City Police Department are working as expeditiously and as thoroughly as we can, to ensure the criminal justice process continues to advance as quickly as all involved and our community deserve,” Graves said.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said there will be a thorough investigation and review by the prosecutor’s office.

“As a parent, I certainly feel for the mother of the victim and others in the family. My heart goes out to them,” the mayor added.

Teen was a band section leader

A GoFundMe started by Faith Spoonmore, who identified herself as Ralph’s aunt, to help the family raise money for medical expenses had garnered more than $1 million in donations by Monday morning.

Ralph had been looking forward to graduating from high school and visiting West Africa before starting college, his aunt wrote in the fundraiser.

The teen is a section leader in a marching band and could often be found with a musical instrument in hand, Spoonmore wrote. Most recently, Ralph earned Missouri All-State Band honorable mention for playing the bass clarinet, according to a North Kansas City Schools’ newsletter in February. He also plays multiple instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra, his aunt wrote.

He is a member of his school’s Technology Student Association and Science Olympiad Team and is a 2022 Missouri Scholars Academy alumni, she wrote.

“Last summer, Ralph attended Missouri Scholar’s Academy, where he got a full college life experience,” Spoonmore wrote. “His goal is to attend Texas A&M to major in chemical Engineering. When asked how he plans to get into this university, he said, ‘Well, if they have a scholarship for music or academics, I know I can get it.’ “

“Life looks a lot different right now. Even though he is doing well physically, he has a long road ahead mentally and emotionally. The trauma that he has to endure and survive is unimaginable,” the GoFundMe post reads.

Sudan’s military commander accuses rival of trying to stage a coup

0

After a day of fierce combat that saw hospitals attacked by missiles as they fought to save lives and left at least 180 people dead in the country, Sudan’s military leader denounced what he called a “attempted coup.”

According to Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is participating in the brutal power struggle that has seized Sudan for three days, the paramilitary organization Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is in charge of “an attempted coup and rebellion against the state.”

The country’s military and the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, began clashing on Saturday. Hemedti told CNN on Sunday that the army had violated a UN-mediated interim humanitarian ceasefire.

Burhan, who alongside Dagalo ousted Sudan’s long-time leader Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and played a key role in the military coup two years later, said his former ally had “mutinied” against the state, and if captured, would be tried in court of law.

On Monday, residents in the capital Khartoum endured sounds of artillery and bombardment by warplanes. Clashes re-erupted around the Army Command building and the Presidential Palace in the capital Khartoum, eyewitnesses said, as fighter jets hovered over the capital, and ground anti-aircraft defenses fired at the planes.

An eyewitness sheltering in the Sudanese capital told CNN that Monday has been the heaviest day of shelling since the outbreak of violence began on Saturday.

Heavy bomb blasts were heard in the city of Bahri in the north of the capital Khartoum, witnesses added.

Hospitals in the country – which are short of blood supplies and life-saving equipment – are being targeted with military strikes by both the Army and the RSF, according to eyewitness accounts to CNN and two doctors’ organizations, leaving medical personnel unable to reach the wounded and to bury the dead.

One doctor at a Khartoum hospital – whom CNN is not naming for security reasons – said his facility has been targeted since Saturday. “A direct strike hit the maternity ward. We could hear heavy weaponry and lay on the floor, along with our patients. The hospital itself was under attack.”

CNN has reached out to the Sudanese military and the RSF for comment.

Another doctor at the same al-Moallem Hospital told CNN that hospital staff stayed on site under bombardment from the RSF for two days, before being evacuated by the Sudanese military. “We were living in a real battle,” the doctor said. “Can you believe that we left the hospital and left behind children in incubators and patients in intensive care without any medical personnel? I can’t believe that I survived dying at the hospital, where the smell of death is everywhere.”

International leaders have urged for calm.

The European Union ambassador to Sudan was assaulted in his residency in Sudan, the bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell said on Monday.

“A few hours ago, the EU Ambassador in Sudan was assaulted in his own residency,” Borrell said on Twitter, without providing further details on the incident, which he described as a “a gross violation of the Vienna Convention.”

He added that “security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law,” he said.

Borrell also said the EU is working to persuade the leadership of the two rival parties to “consider humanitarian pause” in Sudan.

The White House condemned the escalating violence and called “for an immediate ceasefire without conditions between the Sudanese armed forces and the rapid deployment of support forces,” National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby told reporters.

The sound of gunshots rang out in the background as Burhan spoke to CNN on Monday, despite an agreed-on ceasefire at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET). He claimed that for a second day, the RSF’s leader had violated that agreed ceasefire.

“Yesterday and today a humanitarian ceasefire proposal was put forward and agreed upon. Sadly, he did not abide by it. You can hear right now the attempts to storm the Army headquarters, and indiscriminate mortar attacks. He’s using the humanitarian pause to continue the fight,” he said.

When asked about that allegation, a spokesperson for the RSF told CNN that the RSF was trying to abide by the ceasefire, but “they keep firing which leaves no choice” but for the RSF to “defend itself by firing back.”

Hemedti said Monday his group will pursue the leader of Sudan’s Armed Forces Abdel Fattah al-Burhan “and bring him to justice,” while Sudan’s army called on paramilitary fighters to defect and join the armed forces.

Verified video footage shows military jets and helicopters hitting the airport; other clips show the charred remains of the army’s General Command building nearby after it was engulfed in fire on Sunday.

Residents in neighborhoods east of the airport told CNN they saw warplanes bombing sites east of the command. “We saw explosions and smoke rising from Obaid Khatim Street, and immediately after that, anti-aircraft artillery fired massively towards the planes,” one eyewitness said.

An eyewitness, Amal Bakhit, spoke to CNN alongside her cousin Asiel Mohamed. Both women are United States residents, but recently traveled to Khartoum to visit family, and are now stuck inside the country.

She said shelling on Monday was the heaviest since the fighitng began. “It’s been going on since early morning today. Today was the heaviest artillery we have heard during the past three days. We couldn’t sleep,” she said.

Bakhit said that people in Sudan are used to hearing artillery and gunshots since 2018 when widespread unrest rocked the country, but the past several days have not been the same.

“This time it’s different because it’s between two forces, and we seem not to be ready for that. This is war. We are not prepared for that.” she said.

Amid the chaos, both parties to the fighting are working to portray a sense of control in the capital. The armed forces said Monday the Rapid Support Forces are circulating “lies to mislead the public,” reiterating the army have “full control of all of their headquarters” in the capital Khartoum.

Sudan’s national state television channel came back on air on Monday, a day after going dark, and is broadcasting messages in support of the army.

A banner on the channel said “the armed forces were able to regain control of the national broadcaster after repeated attempts by the militias to destroy its infrastructure.” Although the armed forces appear to have control of the television signal, CNN cannot independently verify that the army is in physical control of the Sudan TV premises.

A banner on the channel said “the armed forces were able to regain control of the national broadcaster after repeated attempts by the militias to destroy its infrastructure.”

In the Kafouri area, north of Khartoum, clashes and street fights broke out at dawn Monday, prompting residents to begin evacuating women and children from the area, Sudanese journalist Fathi Al-Ardi wrote on Facebook. In the Kalakla area, south of the capital, residents reported the walls of their houses shaking from explosions.

Reports also emerged of battles hundreds of miles away in the eastern city of Port Sudan and the western Darfur region over the weekend.

As of Monday, at least 180 people have been killed and at least 1800 others were injured in the ongoing clashes, according to Volker Perthes, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Sudan.

The WHO has warned that doctors and nurses are struggling to reach people in need of urgent care, and are lacking essential supplies.

Water and power cuts are affecting the functionality of health facilities, and shortages of fuel for hospital generators are also being reported,” the WHO added.

In the CNN interview, Dagalo blamed the military for starting the conflict and claimed RSF “had to keep fighting to defend ourselves.”

He speculated that the army chief and his rival, al-Burhan, had lost control of the military. When asked if his endgame was to rule Sudan, Dagalo said he had “no such intentions,” and that there should be a civilian government.

Amid the fighting, civilians have been warned to stay indoors. One local resident tweeted that they were “trapped inside our own homes with little to no protection at all.”

“All we can hear is continuous blast after blast. What exactly is happening and where we don’t know, but it feels like it’s directly over our heads,” they wrote.

Access to information is also limited, with the government-owned national TV channel now off the air. Television employees told CNN that it is in the hands of the RSF.

The conflict has put other countries and organizations on high alert. The United Nations along with its humanitarian partners will temporarily shut down many of its more than 250 programmes across Sudan amid the intense hostilities taking place in the country, UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said Monday in a statement.

This comes after the UN’s World Food Program temporarily halted all operations in Sudan after three employees were killed in clashes on Saturday.

UN and other humanitarian facilities in Darfur have been looted, while a WFP-managed aircraft was seriously damaged by gunfire in Khartoum, impeding the WFP’s ability to transport aid and workers within the country, the international aid agency said.

Qatar Airways announced Sunday it was temporarily suspending flights to and from Khartoum due to the closure of its airport and airspace.

On Sunday, Dagalo told CNN the RSF was in control of the airport, as well as several other government buildings in the capital.

Meanwhile, Mexico is working to evacuate its citizens from Sudan, with the country’s foreign minister saying Sunday it is looking to “expedite” their exit.

The United States embassy in Sudan said Sunday there were no plans for a government-coordinated evacuation yet for Americans in the country, citing the closure of the Khartoum airport. It advised US citizens to stay indoors and shelter in place, adding that it would make an announcement “if evacuation of private US citizens becomes necessary.”

The ACC has said that it will proceed with the prosecution of Musonda as soon as possible. The case has attracted a lot of public attention, and many people are hoping that the ACC will be able to secure a conviction against Musonda.

Musonda has denied the charges against her, and her lawyers have said that she is innocent. They have also said that the ACC’s investigation into Musonda was politically motivated. She is currently out on bail of K10 million. The case against Musonda is scheduled to be heard in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on May 10, 2023.

The trial of Faith Musonda is expected to be a major test for the Zambian government’s commitment to fighting corruption. If the ACC is able to secure a conviction against Musonda, it will be a major victory in the fight against corruption in Zambia. However, if Musonda is acquitted, it will be a major setback for the government’s anti-corruption efforts.

I WAS BEING STARVED IN BED, LAMENTS LUNGU

Mary Lungu has told Koswe in Zambia that the main reason she decided to marry another man and especially from Congu (Congo dust) is because her current husband named Mumba was failing to satisfy her conjugal desires.

Lungu says upon tasting a Congolese National, she felt heaven on earth adding that the feeling and banging she has been getting from the man is out of this planet and compared to non including her first husband.

Asked why she didn’t open up to the estranged Mumba, Mary disclosed that she had on several occasions told the man to up his game but that all couldn’t work.

And asked if she had to decided to marry second man because of financial challenges, Lungu who is originally from Malawi stated that Mumba who is also traced to be from Malawi as his mother was from that country, proved to be weaker.

According to research, several men in the Southern Africa region are said to be lazy in terms producing children but of late, some have been claiming to be bulls like Bowman Lusambo who calls himself as Lamba bull and Dr Aaron Mujajati who calls himself as a Tonga bull while Romeo Kangombe who is Sesheke MP has been calling himself as a Lozi bull (Poho) while Kambwili calls himself the only bamunyinane and Bemba Mporokoso bull whereas Canisius Banda as if it is to confirm Mary Lungu’s claims about men from the East, he has been calling himself as the only East bull and Charles Kakoma as North Western bull.

Seen here is Mary holding roses 🌹 from her second husband minutes before the first husband bumped in to claim her

PSG Star Achraf Hakimi Hailed as ‘Living Legend’ by African Men for Shrewd Divorce Strategy

Paris Saint-Germain Star Achraf Hakimi Hailed as ‘Living Legend’ by African Men for Shrewd Divorce Strategy

Moroccan footballer Achraf Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, has become a hero in the eyes of African men after his recent divorce from actress Hiba Abouk.

Despite allegations of infidelity, Hakimi’s ex-wife initially sought half of his €70 million net worth in the divorce settlement.

However, to her shock, it was revealed in court that Hakimi’s assets were registered in his mother’s name, leaving him with little on paper.

This move has earned him widespread praise from African men, who hail him as a “living legend” for his shrewdness in protecting his wealth.

Hakimi Set to Receive Half of Ex-Wife’s Net Worth in Divorce Settlement

African men are lauding Hakimi for his strategic financial planning, with some even calling him a “legend” for “defeating” his wife in the divorce settlement.

Despite not having much in his own name, Hakimi is expected to receive half of his ex-wife’s net worth, estimated at $3 million, as financial support.

This turn of events has sparked widespread discussions among African men, who see Hakimi as a representation of their desire to protect their assets in relationships. Many are even calling for Hakimi to be the guest of honour at the next men’s conference, applauding him for standing up for men’s financial rights in divorce proceedings.

African men have taken to social media to express their admiration for Hakimi’s approach to his divorce, with comments like “Hakimi made history by becoming the first male to defeat a female” and “He deserves a Man of the Month award.”

KAWANA SHOULD BE MATURED IN HIS UTTERANCES – PF MCC KEBBY MBEWE

…if he cannot respect ECL who once looked after him when he was ill, he cannot respect the current President once he retires.

Monday, 17 April 2023 (Smart Eagles)

Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee Kebby Mbewe has castigated Ministry of Information and Media Director Thabo Kawana for Criticising Former President Edgar Lungu’s routine morning exercises.

Mr Kawana is quoted as having said that ECL’s routine morning exercises are not helping the former Head of State in assuming his proper role as elder Statesman or the title of Father of the Nation

And MCC Mbewe said Kawana is using a wrong method in trying to be relevant.

He said Kawana should reach a point of maturity where he should know that Politics is not about hate, personal attacks but it is about a service

“I want to tell him to say it is not the way you keep your job by promoting hate against others,” he said.

MCC Mbewe said Kawana has therefore embarrassed the current Government and the nation at large to the outside world.

“We know that the gentleman is trying to be relevant, that is not the way you do things. To condemn ECL for merely exercising with the people of his choice is an embarrassment. I think Kawana has to tone down, he has to remember that President ECL is not his age mate,” he said.

Meanwhile, MCC Mbewe said if Kawana cannot respect the former President who once looked after him when he was ill, he cannot respect the current President once he retires.

“If he cannot respect the former President and the President for the Party kawana belonged, I don’t see him respecting HH the time he will retire. Kawana has just forgotten that it is the same President Lungu who was looking after him when he was ill, today he wants to declare enmity, what does Kawana represent in this nation, he cannot go on intimidating people like President Lungu.

Thabo Bester Beat Girlfriend Dr Nandipha On Her Birthday In Front Of Guests

ncouth Guest: Thabo Bester Beat Girlfriend Dr Nandipha On Her Birthday In Front Of Guests

Revelations are trickling in concerning Mzansi’s most notorious criminal couple, as it’s emerging that Thabo Bester beat Dr Nandipha on her birthday last year.

The now-infamous celebrity doctor and influencer Dr Nandipha Magudumana turned 34 last September, and her friends are whispering about how nightmarish the day was.

Bester escaped Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein dramatically last year after faking his death. He then moved in with Dr Nandipha, and they stayed in a R12 million imposing mansion.

Why Thabo Bester Beat Dr Nandipha
Four months after Bester fled jail, the couple organised Dr Nandipha’s 34th birthday. The doctor’s friends told Sunday World that a simple argument about how people sat escalated into an ugly scene.

Bester suggested something, and Dr Nandipa disagreed with it, and the convicted rapist and murderer rained multiple slaps on her delicate and flawless cheeks.

“On the day he slapped Nandipha, it was based on the seating arrangements. He told Nandipha that he was in charge of her party, and he should be the one who should decide who sits where and how.”

After assaulting Dr Nandipha in front of the guest who had come to celebrate her, the fiery-tempered Bester got into an agitated fit of enraged fury and turned the tables upside down.

After the event, he tried to force her to leave, but she refused. Her friends then went with her to Sandton Police Station to report the assault, but the cops told her to try and sort out their issue themselves.

Serially-Abusive Thabo Bester
The friends also told Sunday World that Thabo Bester was habitually thrashing Dr Nandipha in front of her two young daughters. She had the girls with her former husband, Dr Mkhuseli “Mac” Magudumana, before their 2018 divorce, The South African reports.

“When Words Fail, Audio Fails Louder”: Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha’s Audio Conversation Raises Eyebrows and Blood Pressure
Last week, suspicious audio leaked, purported to be from Thabo Bester to Dr Nandipha. In the highly-pitched WhatsApp bite, Bester threatened to k!ll Dr Nandipha and her husband as he accused her of ignoring his calls.

THE INSOLENCE IN WHICH THE U.S GOVERNMENT SPEAKS OF THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS OF OUR POLICE RAISES VERY SERIOUS CONCERNS – PF

Below is the Statement: Monday 17 April 2023

The United States Embassy in Zambia yesterday issued a statement applauding President Hakainde Hichilema on the latest appointments he has made in the Zambia Police Service.

In their statement, the American government claim that the appointments will ‘reinforce impartiality in the application of the rule of law and accountability for criminal offences.’ They further accuse the Zambia Police of widespread bribery and corruption within its ranks.

The insolence and detail in which the American government speaks of the internal affairs of our police raises very serious concerns. Just what and how much does the American government know about personnel in the Zambia Police Service and Zambia in general? Who is giving them the information? Has our government ceded its sovereignty to the US government to an extent that the Americans now know and are in control of every detail of our personnel in the Zambia Police
Service? Where does America, a foreign country get the audacity to address our internal security matters with such detail and disdain? How safe are we as a country when a foreign power like the US seem to be in control of our own internal security apparatus? Can the Zambian government be allowed to talk about America’s internal security personnel in such a callous manner without consequences?

It is hypocritical and actually laughable that a country that is grappling with serious police misconduct, ranging from excessive force, discriminatory harassment, false arrests, coercive sexual conduct, and unlawful stops, searches or arrests including torture and murder can have the audacity to reprimand and accuse another country’s police of being corrupt and unethical.

America has a serious problem of policing. The misconduct of the police in America is so grim that the American people have marched in thousands to demand for the defunding of the police in the US. The American government has spent more than $1.5 billion of taxpayers’ money to settle claims of police misconduct involving thousands of officers repeatedly accused of wrongdoing. And the majority of the American citizens have been kept in the dark about this.

Police misconduct and violence in America have taken centre stage of the national discourse. Research by independent and reputable institutions has found that ‘black people are three and a half times more likely to be killed by police when not holding a weapon, or not attacking, than white people.’ Tragically, one out of every thousand black men in the US will be killed by police violence.

It is an undisputed fact that 1 in 20 US homicides are committed by police – and the numbers are not declining.
Records show that police killings in America account for nearly 5% of all homicides, with at least 1,192 people killed by law enforcement in 2022 alone.

According to The Washington Post’s tracking database, at least 1,054 people were shot and killed by the police in 2021. And according to Mapping Police Violence, a leading police violence research project, police killed a minimum of 1,136 people that same year. That includes 1,095 people shot by police or another cause of death — such as tasers, physical restraints, or police vehicles.

How dare that a country with such a shameful and damning record of police brutality and misconduct can assume for itself, a role to issue disparaging and damaging statements against the police of another sovereign state?

We challenge President Hakainde Hichilema to tell his masters, for once, to stop meddling in the internal security affairs of our state. Zambia is not a colony of America and we take great exception when we are treated as such.

Miles Sampa, GBM And Kambwili Don’t Qualify To Contest PF Presidency – Former PF SG Davies Mwila

MILES, GBM AND KAMBWILI DON’T QUALIFY TO CONTEST PF PRESIDENCY – FORMER PF SG MWILA

…says party wants to amend constitution to enable them to contest the presidency as they are currently ineligible

Monday, 17 April 2023 (Smart Eagles)

FORMER PF secretary general Davies Mwila says Miles Sampa, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba – GBM and Dr. Chishimba Kambwili do not qualify to contest the party presidency because they haven’t been members for five continuous years.

And Mwila says former PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri has never retired or resigned from the party and she does not, therefore, need to reapply to join as purported by Sampa.

Sampa recently wondered when Phiri applied to rejoin the party as per their constitutional requirement, saying it was in public domain that she retired from active politics.

But in an interview, Friday, Mwila said the party wanted to amend its constitution to enable Sampa, Kambwili and GBM to contest the presidency as they were currently ineligible.

“Miles Sampa left the party, after leaving the party, that’s why as central committee we came up with the decision that we amend the constitution because Miles Sampa is one of the people that do not qualify to stand as PF president. Because article 52 of our constitution is very clear that anyone who wants to stand as president must be a member of the party for five years continuously. So ask Miles Sampa when he came back to the party.

That’s why Chishimba Kambwili, GBM and Miles Sampa, we agreed that we amend the constitution to allow them to participate. The three of them don’t qualify; himself, GBM and Chishimba Kambwili and that’s why we said let’s go to the general conference and amend the constitution to allow them to participate. Otherwise, if we don’t amend the constitution, even him will not qualify,” he said.

And Mwila said as then secretary general of the party, he never received any letter of resignation or retirement from Phiri.

“Mumbi Phiri never resigned from PF, I was secretary general, so I’m talking with a lot of information. Mumbi didn’t resign, not from the party or Central Committee. She never resigned or retired. When you resign or retire from politics, there must be a letter to that [effect]. Which records? Is he secretary general or was he secretary general? Is he the one who was keeping the records? I’m telling you as the one that was keeping the records, I never received a letter from Mumbi Phiri that she has resigned from the party. Let them just compete, so he should not be scared about that,” he said.

Mwila argued that Phiri was more loyal to the party than Sampa.

“And as a member of the party, Mumbi is more loyal, more committed than Miles Sampa. She has the right to contest as far as we are concerned because you can’t compare loyalty of Mumbi Phiri with Miles Sampa, it’s totally different. Mumbi is more committed. So Miles Sampa can’t compare himself with Mumbi Phiri, practically impossible. Mumbi Phiri has been consistent, Mumbi Phiri has been a loyal member of the party. This issue of trying to bar other people, it will not work.

PF is a democratic party and it has to allow any member that wants to stand. Miles Sampa is not the returning officer who can bar Mumbi Phiri, it’s the ones that will be appointed as the returning officer, those are the ones that will make a decision on all the people that have applied. Whether they are eligible or not,” he said.

Mwila urged Sampa to tone down.

“When I was secretary general, it’s me who fought for him to come back in the party. No one wanted Miles Sampa, I personally fought for Miles Sampa, both to come back as a member and to be given a position of mayor and as MP. I have been instrumental, so he should tone down. People condemn me as a person who was in that seat because certain decisions were made by me, and they tell me ‘look at the people that you’ve brought’. So everything that is happening to Miles Sampa is coming on my head,” said Mwila.

“When he was coming back to the party, he wrote a letter to me that central committee should sit and deliberate on his position. I got a letter from him, l took it to the central committee to deliberate. But according to article 72, once you resign from the party, for you to come back it has to take about three years. So Miles Sampa didn’t clock three years, so we had to use articles 72 and 71 so that there’s that discretion of the president, and I took the letter to the central committee and it was deliberated. And the president used his discretion to bring back Miles Sampa. So we know a lot of things, I was secretary general, so it’s better that he tones down.

Minister Of Arts Must Consider Withdrawing The Permit Issued To Koffi Olomide- Sean Tembo

0

ABOUT THE YO-MAPS VS KOFFI OLOMIDE PERFORMANCE CRASH

By Sean E. Tembo – PeP President

1. The proposed adjustment in the performance date by the Koffi Olomide promoters from Saturday, 27th May 2023 to Friday, 26th May 2023 actually does not help, but further undermines the Yo-Maps “Fill Heroes Stadium” show which is slated for Saturday, 27th May 2023. That is because we are told that the Koffi Show is an evening one, and knowing evening shows, the headliner will only begin to play around midnight, and revelers will be up until the early hours of Saturday.

2. On the other hand, we are told that the Yo-Maps show is a day event, probably starting around mid-day on Saturday. Therefore, the chances that a reveler who only went home in the early hours of Saturday, will wake up in time to attend another show at Heroes around mid-day, are very slim. That means the possible success of Yo-Maps “Fill Heroes Stadium” show will be greatly undermined by Koffi’s show.

3. Personally, l am a big fan of Koffi and if this issue was entirely about music, l would have chosen to attend Koffi’s show. But this issue is not entirely about music. It is about patriotism. It is about Zambia creating an artist that we can sell to our neighboring countries, to Africa and to the world at large. As a nation, we have produced many good musicians, but none has made a dent on the international scene.

4. As things stand today, Yo-Maps is the only one who has the greatest chance of putting Zambia on the world map in terms of music. And his “Fill Heroes Stadium” show will be a litmus test of whether the region, Africa and the world at large will take him seriously as an international artist or not. If the show succeeds and Heroes Stadium is full to the brim, then Zambia will be on her way to creating an internationally recognized artist. If the show fails, then Yo-Maps will just add to the list of several other good Zambian musicians who had great potential but never really penetrated the world scene.

5. My considered view is that we all need to support Yo-Maps “Fill Heroes Stadium” show with as much zeal and passion as we support Chipolopolo. Because that show is bigger than Yo-Maps. It is about Zambia claiming a spot on the musical scene of the region and of the world at large. Speaking of which; where is the Ministry of Youth, Arts and Sports? More specifically, where is Pilato, the newly appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, whom for decades made a living performing shows, and knows the intricacies of making a show a success?

6. Yo-Maps first announced his “Fill Heroes Stadium” show sometime late last year, and the Ministry officials at the time claimed that they will support the initiative. But why did the same Ministry issue a permit to a major international artist of Koffi Olomide’s stature to perform, not just on the same weekend, but on the same day as the Yo-Maps “Fill Heroes Stadium” show? What kind of support is that? Lusaka might have more than 3 million residents, but the people who attend these shows are pretty much the same. Of course those below 25 years are unlikely to be interested in a Koffi show, just like those above 55 years are unlikely to be interested in a Yo-Maps show. But those who are between 25 and 55 years, who happen to be the majority and who also happen to have the biggest purchasing power, will be torn between the two shows.

7. It must be remembered that if the “Fill Heroes Stadium” show succeeds and Yo-Maps proceeds to become a major international artist, then Zambia as a nation will benefit immensely too. When Yo-Maps is hired to perform in other countries, and is paid dollars, he will be bringing those dollars back home and helping to strengthen our Kwacha as well as prop up our balance of payments (bop) position.

8. Therefore, the Ministry of Youth, Arts and Sports must consider withdrawing the permit issued to Koffi Olomide, so that he should only be allowed to perform after the Yo-Maps show and not before. The other thing about these shows is that there is usually financial fatigue that arises, given that it’s pretty much the same people that attend. Therefore even if the Koffi show was moved two weeks earlier, it will still undermine the Yo-Maps “Fill Heroes Stadium” show, because of financial fatigue.

9. Lastly, l am confident that the “Fill Heroes Stadium” show will succeed. However, some bit of advice to the show organizers. Firstly l feel the pricing needs to be reconsidered. K50 as the cheapest ticket is on the high side in this economy, if you intend to attract more than 50,000 revelers who are mostly jobless youngsters. K30 would have been more appropriate. Also remember that your catchment area for the cheapest tickets is not necessarily the entire Lusaka due to the challenge of transport logistics. The catchment area is largely those high density areas surrounding Heroes Stadium where revelers can walk on foot to the venue. Therefore you are largely talking about Matero, Zingalume, George, Chaisa, Mandevu, Chipata Compound, Marapodi etcetera. Hence the need to focus on volumes and not profits. You are better off filling up Heroes Stadium to the brim, and making K2m profit, than having the stadium half empty and making K5m profit. The benefits of being able to fill Heroes Stadium are many and are in future.

10. Secondly, l feel the K500 for VVIP tickets is too low. VVIP is supposed to be exclusive and you are not supposed to have more than 100 tickets in this category. VVIP ticket holders need to have exclusive parking with extra security and protocol officers ushering them to their seats. Not ati VVIP but you are stepping on each other’s feet. Therefore, a price tag of about K2,000 would be more appropriate for VVIP tickets, so that only those who really need exclusivity will buy them. Otherwise l wish Yo-Maps and his team all the best. My wife and l will definitely be there to support you.

THE NEW POLICE IG

By Dickson Jere

President Rupiah Banda was arrested and detained in 1993 on “treason charges” without trial alongside 26 other opposition members from UNIP. They were all accused of plotting to overthrow the democratically elected government using illegal means under a plot codenamed “Zero Option”.

Rupiah Banda and company were detained in different police stations and most of them badly tortured by police and denied legal representation and food. One of them, Cuthbert Nguni, is believed to have died as a result of torture and the case attracted international condemnation.

However, Rupiah Banda was among the few detainees who survived the torture and somewhat had access to food, water and legal representation. After a month in detention, Rupiah Banda was released with few others without any charge.

In 2008, Rupiah Banda became President.
A year later in Office, he decided to reorganize his State House team and the Zambia Police Service. And so, he picked the Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to be the second in command in the police – Police Commissioner.

For unknown reasons, President Banda rarely talked about his incarceration except to indicate that he had forgiven whoever implicated him. But on the swearing-in ceremony in April 2009, President Banda let the cat out of the bag and revealed how he survived in police detention before he was moved to remand prison.

“We still have officers who can be professional even under difficult circumstances,” he said, while thanking his newly appointed Police Commissioner for the role he played in making sure he was not tortured.

The President narrated how the Officer In-Charge (as he then was) at Emmasdale Police instructed all his officers to treat the “Zero Option” detainees with respect and dignity and allow them access to family and legal representation. He risked his job and maintained his professionalism throughout the period he kept the detainees.

Grapheal Musamba was that officer!

He rose through the ranks and became the Boss of CID before he was promoted to number two position in the service. Soft spoken and always rational. He lots his job after President Banda and the MMD lost the 2011 elections.

We may not be privy to the reasons why President Hakainde Hichilema has brought him back from retirement. But what is clear is that Musamba is one of the officers who tried even under the MMD to be rational on many fronts. He wa always professional and treated people equally.

In congratulating him on his new job, it is my prayer that he will remain steadfast and keep his CV intact of being a gentleman and officer. He left a good name and I hope he will keep it so even now…Musamba was also liked by the officers within the service as he had open door policy to his office.

Musumba was sworn-in together with us the state house aides who had just been elevated. I was to head the media and public relations team (from initial position of Chief Analyst) while my colleague Joseph Jalasi headed the legal affairs unit and Charles Kaonga as head of State House security (Compol).

Citizens Urge Court To Nullify Appointment of Judges

0

Citizens who challenged the appointment of 20 judges of the superior courts by the President have urged the Constitutional Court to nullify the appointments for having been done in contravention of constitutional values and principles.

In a reply to the Answer by the Attorney-General filed on Friday, Governance Activist Isaac Mwanza and Maurice Makalu submitted that public interest demands that the Constitution and the law must be respected and upheld.

Mr Mwanza maintained that the Judicial Service Commission contravened the Constitution in the selection process of judges when it failed to respect constitutional values and principles outlined in Article 173 which require a transparent and competitive process which provide equal opportunities to suitably qualified persons.

“Whereas there was need to recruit more judges into the superior courts in order to enhance access to justice and the administration of justice, suffice to reiterate that the recruitment process had to itself comply and be within the Constitution and the law otherwise it all amounted to a nullity.”

Mr Mwanza reminded the court that it has judicial authority and has previously used such authority to nullify decisions by the President which came into conflict with the Constitution.

He pointed the Court to its decision in 2016 which nullified the decision by the former President to keep Ministers in office after dissolution of Parliament and ordered the Ministers to pay back the money they had earned.

“If the Judicial Service Commission was in violation of the Constitution in its process of selecting judges, so was the President in making appointments and the National Assembly in confirming the appointment made by the President,” said the Petitioners.

The Petitioners submitted that Article 140 as read together with Article 95 of the Constitution provides a the process of appointing Judges in Zambia in three-phased approach.

They stated that the appointment process starts with selection and recommending persons by the Commission, followed by appointment of judges by the President, and culminates with confirmation of presidential appointment by the National Assembly.

The petitioners also differentiated the appointment process in Zambia from that of the United States of America where the process starts with the President and ends with the U.S legislature.

The petitioners said the Zambian process is similar to Kenyan and South African processes which uses a three-tier system and require respect for constitutional values and principles.

Mr Mwanza has since told the Constitutional Court that courts in Kenya have shown extraordinary courage and independence by nullifying appointments made by the President which contravene the Kenyan Constitution, even after appointees have been sworn into office.

UPND completely EXCITED and DRUNK with STATE POWER- Jackson Silavwe

0

The arrest of Boyd Masoud Longwe is a clear demonstration of the narrow political vindictiveness that has characterized our Nation by those yielding State power and those influencing it. Longwe’s arrest shows that President Hakainde Hichilema and those affiliated to his leadership lack the minimal backbone to unite all the Zambians across political parties lines.

Those that rule with President Hichilema have once more shown us that they will stop at nothing in fixing their perceived political foes even if it costs the UPND power itself, they are completely EXCITED and DRUNK with STATE POWER. It’s true that Boyd was a steady supporter of the Patriotic Front (PF) BUT he was a RATIONAL, WELL INFORMED and ALL ROUNDED supporter.

Even us who PREDICTED EARLY on before the 2021 General Elections that PF DEFEAT was EMINENT at the hands of the UPND, Boyd still sought to understand our position in a very calm and collected manner when we were being insulted by PF affiliated political parties who accused us of being UPND biased.

A known political Party President even called for a press conference and called for my impeachment as ZCID Chairperson then. It is for that same reason that when Boyd suffered a STROKE that could have ENDED his life before the elections, I personally said a Prayer for him and sent good wishes even when he held a different position from mine.

Boyd is incapable of insults and later on insult President Hakainde Hichilema. The only crime Boyd has committed is to at one time belong to the patriotic front (PF) before he became a civil servant. “How dare he gets a job in the new dawn administration when he supported the PF?” Those the yield state power have deemed it fit to smoke him out of the civil service based on his past PF association.

Boyd’s sadistic arrest goes against the very loud pronouncements made by President Hichilema at the Democracy Summit 2023 and cheered on by other Democratic states. What is democracy then if it to punish those that once held divergent associations and views from those that are in power now? I call for the release of Boyd from police custody immediately for democracies sake.

THE UNPRECEDENTED COACHING CAREER OF LEGENDARY SAMUEL” ZOOM” NDHLOVU

THE UNPRECEDENTED COACHING CAREER OF LEGENDARY SAMUEL” ZOOM” NDHLOVU

Samuel ” Zoom” Ndhlovu got involved in coaching at Wanderers from as early as 1966 when he became player coach replacing Harry McQuillan. From then on, he was involved as player-coach, coach or technical advisor.

Ndhlovu was first appointed national team trainer in 1967 for a trip to Tanzania in July but was unable to make the trip due to work commitments.

He however first handled the national team in December of the same year during the Jamhuri tournament against Kenya in Nairobi, at the age of 30 making him the youngest coach to take charge of Zambia in a full international match.

Zambia won the two match series 5–1 and 4–3. Ndhlovu also took charge of Zambia as player-coach for a trip to Uganda in October the following year.

He was appointed national player-coach again when a team was assembled to play Congo DR in Kinshasa. This invitation coincided with the visit of Russian team Leningrad Zeniths. FAZ officials accepted the Congolese offer and decided to send an under-strength team to Kinshasa. The result was Zambia’s heaviest defeat on 22 November 1969 with Congo romping to a 10-1 victory.

Ndhlovu said this was the worst game of his career and he was so shattered that he could not eat after the game.

During the seventies, he was Wanderers Technical Advisor as the coaching role changed from George Sikazwe to Makwaza and in 1982 he took over as coach after Makwaza resigned. He went on to nurture players like Ashols Melu, Efford Chabala, Kalusha Bwalya, Charles Musonda and Johnson Bwalya. He was also the assistant coach to Bill McGarry, Wieslaw Grawboski and Geoff Butler and when the Zambia Football Coaches Association (ZAFCA) was formed, he was elected chairman.

He succeeded Butler as Overseer for Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) sponsored club coaches in February 1987and did a lot to motivate many local coaches. He commanded a lot of respect from players and fellow coaches and was called ‘Sir Zoom.’

After Zambia performed disastrously at the CAN ‘86 and Coach Brightwell Banda was sidelined, Ndhlovu took over the reins. His first game was an All Africa Games qualifier against Malawi in April 1987 in Lusaka which Zambia won 3–1.

Ndhlovu guided Zambia to the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 after a 2–1 aggregate win over Ghana. At the games Zambia found itself in a group with Italy, Guatemala and Iraq, where they thought to have little chance of progressing. Zambia defied the odds by topping the group to make it to the quarter-finals after beating both Italy and Venezuela by 4–0 score-lines. They however lost in the quarter-finals to West Germany by the same margin.

Ndhlovu was a proponent of the attacking game and under him Zambia recorded impressive results. He had an exceptional home record but his Achilles’ heel was that he could never get a result away from home when it really mattered.

After the Olympic Games, many expected Zambia to qualify to Italia ‘90 but it was not to be as the team won all its home games but failed to collect a single point on the road. The disappointment of missing out on the World Cup was put behind them at CAN ‘90 in Algeria where Zambia finished third.

Ndhlovu won the SADCC Cup with Zambia, beating Zimbabwe 3–1 in Gaborone in August 1990 and he led Zambia to a CECAFA Cup victory in Uganda the following year.[20]

At the 1992 Cup of Nations Zambia disappointed yet again, losing in the quarter-finals to eventual winners Côte d’Ivoire and the team arrived home to a barrage of criticism with fans calling for his resignation.

One accusation levelled at him was that he favoured certain local players at the expense of one or two European based professionals. Ndhlovu appealed for calm and reminded fans that ’emotions never win a war.'”Fans must appreciate in football there are losses, wins and defeats. Even if you bring an angel Zambia will experience defeat one time or another.” He refused to step down saying he was the best man for the job and resisted calls for German coach Jochen Figge, who at the time was attached to the Ministry of Sport as a Development Officer, to join the squad. Ndhlovu later relented and said he was ready to work with Figge who politely declined.

The criticism against him continued until he suddenly announced his resignation in July 1992, citing criticism from the media and lack of appreciation from fans. He was particularly incensed by a popular radio programme which questioned his reluctance to step aside and give chance to others.

This left the FAZ in a quandary and when Zambia kicked off the 1994 Nations Cup qualifiers unconvincingly with Figge as Technical Advisor and Simutowe as coach, struggling to overcome Mauritius 2–1 at home and defeating newcomers South Africa 1–0 in Johannesburg, Ndhlovu bounced back into the saddle for the 1994 World Cup qualifiers with a convincing 2–0 home victory against Tanzania in Lusaka and a 4–0 win over Namibia in Windhoek.

He also led Zambia to third place at that year’s CECAFA tournament with an 8-0 thumping of Zanzibar along the way. However a 2–0 loss away to Madagascar in a World Cup qualifier in December 1992 spelt the end of his reign as coach, only finding out when the FAZ announced in the press that he had been sacked and replaced with a new coaching team of Simwala, Godfrey Chitalu and Alex Chola. He said he was not surprised with the move charging that his dismissal was a fulfilment of a campaign pledge by the newly elected FAZ executive.

Ndhlovu then packed his bags and headed for Lobatse in Botswana where he took charge of one of the country’s top clubs LCS Gunners. As a consequence, he was not with the Zambian squad during the fateful flight in April 1993 when the whole team was wiped out in the Gabon disaster. He heard of the plane crash in Botswana and reflected that he would have been on that aircraft had he not decided to come to Botswana after falling out with the FAZ officials. “I do not know whether I should say I am lucky, but because I had disagreements with those fellows, I decided to come here to take up an appointment as Lobatse Extension Gunners coach,” he said.

He went on to win the league with the Gunners in 1994 and returned home in 1996 when he decided not to renew his contract.

Ndhlovu, who worked as a Community Development Officer and then as Chief Community Development Officer for Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) in Mufulira was not for the idea of being employed as full-time coach and he rendered his services to the nation on secondment from ZCCM.

During his time as coach from 1987-1992 he was in charge of Zambia for more matches than any other coach, suffering only 1 home defeat in a 2–1 loss to Egypt in December 1988 in Kitwe and won all his competitive home games. Of the 22 home matches he won 19 drew 2 and lost 1. Of the 66 games played away from home, Zambia won 28 times, drew 16 and lost 22. He had a win rate of 53%.

However, he made another comeback but this time as Technical Advisor when in November 1996, the Government and the FAZ could not reach an agreement with Roald Poulsen over a new contract and Freddie Mwila was appointed coach. The duo’s reign was short-lived as they resigned on 11 April 1997 when Zambia failed to beat Zaire in a World Cup qualifier, drawing 2–2 in Harare.

George Mungwa took over as caretaker coach but he could not save Zambia’s campaign as South Africa grabbed the only ticket to France ‘98 in the group.

Ndhlovu then went back to Mufulira to help out at Wanderers and took a low profile until 2000 when he contested the FAZ presidency but lost to Evaristo Kasunga by a landslide margin.

He returned to Wanderers as coach and cleared out most of the old guard in preference for youth and paid the price when Wanderers were thrashed 5–0 at home by Zanaco in the first game of the season.

When Wanderers’ went 9 games without a win, he was relieved of his duties and replaced by George Lwandamina. At the end of the season, Wanderers were relegated from the Premier league but were saved by a boardroom decision when Rail Express FC, one of the teams that finished above them was disbanded so they continued in the top league.

In early 200s Ndhlovu first experienced poor health in February when he collapsed during a training session at Central Sports Stadium in Mufulira.

In February 2001, he underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his large intestine but his battle with cancer continued until he succumbed and died at Malcolm Watson Hospital in Mufulira on 10 October 2001.

Activities in Mufulira came to a standstill as several former and present Wanderers players were joined by other mourners in paying their last respects to the super footballer called “Zoom.” After a requiem mass at Shinde Stadium, he was put to rest at Chatulinga Cemetery next to his daughter with a burial befitting that of a hero.He was survived by a wife and two sons.

Then Sports Minister Peter Chintala said the country had lost one of its greatest sporting heroes and former teammate Makwaza said ‘Ever since I knew him he was just superb.’ Kalusha Bwalya described him as a great player and true legend who set him on his way to fame.

In 2002, the Zambian season-opening Charity Shield was renamed the Samuel “Zoom” Ndhlovu Charity Shield in his honour.

MKUSHI MAN CATHES WIFE WITH TANZANIAN DRIVER IN HIS SHOP

By The Candidates Admin 3

A man in Mkush, only known as Bashi Emmanuel, has found his wife red-handed, in his own grocery shop being engineered horizontally by a Tanzanian truck driver.

Bashi Emmanuel had left for Serenje to plant soya beans at his farm.

He left behind his wife of 7 years and their three children.

Unknown to Bashi Emmanuel, his wife has been seeing a Tanzanian driver secretly.

While he was away in Serenje, the truck driver decided to fake a fault and informed his company in Tanzania that he cannot proceed because he had experienced a mechanical failure on his way to Kapiri to carry maize as per duty.

The truck driver decided to spend a day at Johnwood lay by in the Mkushi area to briefly engineer someone’s wife horizontally.

Unknown to the promiscuous duo, Bashi Emmanuel was on his way home from Serenje so that he could collect his 6 bags of fertilizer, which the government allocated to him on Farmers Input Support Programme(FISP).

Upon reaching Johnwood around 14hrs, Bashi Emmanuel proceeded to the Johnwood Farmers Community Office to collect his allocation.

He only spent thirty minutes, and he got his fertilizer, which he decided to store at his grocery shop, which is located along the main Mkushi-Serenje road, for easy transportation back to his soya beans field.

In the grocery shop, his wife Bana Emmanuel had taken off her garmets to permit, easily and swiftly, this Tanzanian driver’s one-eyed anaconda voyage deep inside.

“Nakupenda we we sana” was the noise Bashi Emmanuel could detect right outside the shop, which he found awkwardly closed at such a peak business hours.

Then he remembered that he had a set of keys to the shop right from the back door. He put his 6 bags of fertilizer at the front door and went to quietly open the back door.

Immediately he entered, he spotted his wife with her legs open lying intentionally helplessly on the counter serving her client, the Tanzanian driver.

Only that this time, she was serving this dark short man whose one-eyed anaconda seemed to measure 15 cm long.

The two didn’t realise that Bashi Emmanuel had entered and carried on with the horizontal engineering.

Bashi Emmanuel locked the back door and hurriedly barricaded the front door while grabbing the clothes of the two.

He shouted ‘naikata Bana Emmanuel ubuhule’ thereby attracting the attention of people outside.

He opened the front door as the duo hid behind the counter undressed.

Bashi Emmanuel invited people to buy goods and asked people to buy anything in the shop including the naked duo.

Tech boss stabbed Cash App founder dead over fight about his sister

Nima Momeni, the 38-year-old founder of software company Expand IT, stabbed CashApp founder Bob Lee through the heart after the pair fought about the suspect’s sister and whether they were doing “anything inappropriate,” new court documents released Friday, April 14, allege.

Police claim that before Lee was murdered on the streets of San Francisco in the early hours of April 4, Momeni and the slain tech entrepreneur had talked on the phone about his sister, Khazar Momeni, who is married to someone else.

An unnamed witness told police that Nima questioned Lee about his sister, asking if she was “doing drugs or anything inappropriate.”

Lee, 43, assured Nima that nothing out of bounds had happened.

Police didn’t elaborate on the relationship Lee had with Khazar, who was not named in the court documents.

The witness told police it was unclear if Lee and Khazar had an “intimate relationship.”

That night, Nima drove Lee to a “dark and secluded area” of San Francisco, the charging documents allege, where he stabbed him through the heart with a kitchen knife.

Khazar brought the knife with him from his home, which police said makes clear the murder was “planned and deliberate.”

Khazar texted Lee around the time of his murder to check in on him, the documents claim.

“Just wanted to make sure your doing ok Cause I know nima came wayyyyyy down hard on you,” she wrote.

“And thank you for being such a class man handling it with class. Love you Selfish pricks,” Khazar wrote to Lee.

Lee was estranged from his wife, with whom he shared two young girls, and was living in Florida with his dad at the time of his murder.

Nima was arrested Thursday morning, April 13, and prosecutors plan to charge him with murder. He is set to be arraigned on April 25 and faces more than 20 years in prison if convicted.

Video footage from the sister’s apartment shows Lee and Nima in an elevator together at 2:03 a.m. and getting into the alleged killer’s white BMW.

Grainy video also shows the two standing outside of the BMW for about five minutes in a deserted part of the wealthy Rincon Hills neighborhood, according to the police.

Additional security cameras appear to show Lee walking away injured and the assailant walking near the area where the murder weapon was discovered, but the video isn’t clear enough to show their faces.

The white BMW then sped off, police say.
