James Ndambo Refutes Claims By Media Reports Suggesting That He Had A Company Operating At Kasumbalesa Border Post

Lusaka— Tuesday March 14th 2023

SMART EAGLES

Business tycoon James Ndambo’s family have refuted media reports suggesting that the Zambian government had prevented his company from running the Kasumbalesa border post .

Media allegations have accused Mr. Ndambo of making illicit profits at the said border post .

But family representative Mr. Fortune Ndambo has told Smart Eagles that Mr. Ndambo ha no connection with the said transactions.

“Mr James Ndambo had no relationship or connection with Zambia IP Border Crossing Company (ZIpBCC) nor was there a contract or concession indirectly or directly with ZRA at Kasumbalesa border post.” He said .

He added that it has been a public knowledge over the past 12 years that a Jewish company operated the contract in topic.

Mr James Ndambo is a Zambian born business tycoon based in the Republic of South Africa.

Here is a full statement from the family below…

Mr. James Ndambo never had a contract with Zambia Revenue Authority in Kasumbalesa.

The Ndambo family is flabbergasted by media reports published by some overzealous malicious online publication dated 2nd March 2023 purporting that Zambian government had stopped Mr. James Ndambo through his company from running the Zambia Kasumbalesa border post where it’s alleged, he was making illicit profits, without defining the licit profits that presumably the publisher’s company if any, makes.

The family would rather the publisher confronts Mr Ndambo at a personal level if he has contentious issues to address as opposed to hiding behind non-existent contracts purely to attract public attention.

The moment you refer to someone as hurting the Zambians via illicit profits, why not channel such to institutions tasked to police such errant business houses or individuals?
Mr. James Ndambo had no relationship or connection with Zambia IP Border Crossing Company (ZipBCC) nor was there a contract or concession indirectly or directly with ZRA at Kasumbalesa border post. It has been public knowledge over the past 12 years that a Jewish company operated the contract in topic.

This kind of reporting is highly regrettable, and one would have expected a responsible online publication to carryout due diligence before publishing such falsities.

It’s sad that Mr. Ndambo’s character is being assassinated over issues that he absolutely has no connection with. Mr. Ndambo is a family man and coming from a very large family [Church and NGO included] such that whenever such lies circulate, it’s not only him who gets negatively impacted, but the entire extended family.

We are cognizance of the fact that Zambia is a democratic country where one can express his or her views and ideas freely. Let us enjoy this freedom and use it to share accurate information, positive thoughts and ideas instead of trying to destroy reputation and lives of others who have painstakingly labored to build their legacy spanning over decades.

Fred M’membe’s Take On Hhs Outbursts On The Copperbelt

FRED M’MEMBE’S TAKE ON HHs OUTBURSTS ON THE COPPERBELT

There is no doubt that Mr Hakainde Hichilema and many in the UPND have very good reasons to detest or even hate Mr Edgar Lungu. They were badly treated and brutalised by him and his regime.

Mr Lungu was cruel to his opponents, to those who were not with him. I was a victim of his cruelty and that of his league.

It’s not easy to forget such things and forgive.

But whenever anger and vengeance try to consume me I turn to Christ’s teachings to recover my sense of humanity: “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5: 43-45).

Christ doesn’t say we shouldn’t have enemies but that we should love them. To love our enemies we must have them in the first place.

It’s very easy to love your friends and it doesn’t need much effort. What’s difficult is to love your enemies and that requires much effort, much humanity.

Mr Hichilema may harbour a lot of hatred and anger towards Mr Lungu and he is entitled to. But Mr Lungu is still a human being with human, constitutional, and legal rights.

The statements Mr Hichilema is making against Mr Lungu as a result of what he sees as a desire or intention on his part to come back to active and elective politics border on inhumanity, unconstitutional conduct, lawlessness, and undemocratic behaviour. And it is contrary to Christian teachings, liberal democratic values, and the rule of law.

The words used by Mr Hichilema were uncouth and seriously lacked civility for a President. That’s language for bakaponya.

Mr Hichilema doesn’t need to like or be happy with Mr Lungu for him to enjoy his rights as a human being and as a citizen of the Republic of Zambia.

What type of Christians and liberal democrats are these people?

Let Mr Lungu enjoy his rights to the full as long as he acts within the law. If the law allows him to stand in 2026 let him do so, and defeat him at the polls.

Pope Francis suggests reviewing Catholic Church’s 1,000 years practice of celibacy for priests

0

Pope Francis has hinted that he would review the Roman Catholic Church’s rule of priestly celibacy, describing it as an individual “discipline” rather than a “contradiction” to the church.

Francis, who previously opposed the idea that celibacy was an option for leaders of the church, appeared to make a U-turn during his latest interview with Argentine outlet Infobae in celebrating the 10-year anniversary of his election as pope.

“There is no contradiction for a priest to marry. Celibacy in the western Church is a temporary prescription,” Francis, 86, remarked. “It is not eternal like priestly ordination, which is forever, whether you like it or not. Whether you leave or not is another matter, but it is forever. On the other hand, celibacy is a discipline.”

Celibacy was made a requirement in the Catholic Church around the 11th century, following centuries of tradition for priests to embrace the practice along with vows of abstinence.

Despite the rule sparking conflict within the church for nearly 1,000 years, the Vatican has continually enforced the rules, including Francis’s predecessor, Benedict XVI.

Francis had maintained his predecessor’s view, arguing in 2019 that celibacy was a gift to the church, and in 2020, he rejected calls for married men to be ordained during a shortage of priests in the Amazon.

Most recently, Germany’s Catholic Church voted to formally send a request to the Pope to end the requirement, and it appears as though Francis might agree.

Citing the Eastern Rite Catholic Church, which gives more leeway to its priests, Francis said: “Everyone in the Eastern Church is married, or those who want to. Before ordination there is the choice to marry or to be celibate.”

He said of one such priest: “We have one in the curia [papal court] — I ran into him today — who has a wife and a son. There is no contradiction in a priest being married.”

Francis however, added that he did not believe the new rule would lead to more people joining the priesthood, and on the topic of marriage, the Pope put in his two cents about recent trends.

He told Infobae that he was concerned about rising divorce rates around the world and suggested that people were getting married too early.

“Sometimes one goes to a wedding and it seems more like it’s a social reception and not a sacrament,” he commented. “When young people say forever, who knows what they mean by forever.”

MMD ‘hijackers’ More Committed To Pf Than So-called Founder Members-former PF SG Davies Mwila

MMD ‘HIJACKERS’ MORE COMMITTED TO PF THAN SO-CALLED FOUNDER MEMBERS-FORMER PF SG MWILA

…. individuals who left the party and later rejoined can’t be trusted to be leaders.

FORMER PF secretary general Davies Mwila has insisted that party members should go for loyalty, integrity, and commitment when electing the next leader.

Mwila argues that the so-called MMD “hijackers” have shown more commitment to the party than individuals bragging about being founder members.

In an interview, Mwila insisted that individuals who left the party and later rejoined can’t be trusted to be leaders.

“I told the Zambian people and the members of the party that those that are not loyal to the party will be exposed as we go to the general conference. That’s why I’m supporting the secretariat for them to have delayed the convention for another two/three months because all of them will be exposed. And you have seen that now people are being exposed. I talked about Miles Sampa that he has been exposed, two more have been exposed. And I told the members of the party that as we go to the general conference, I advised them and I’m still advising them, anyone that left the party and came back, you can’t trust them. It’s high time that we voted for people that have loyalty, integrity and commitment,” he said.

Mwila added that the recently leaked audio between Chishimba Kambwili and Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba showed how desperate the two were to be leaders.

“That is desperation if you look at the conversation, it is showing that they are desperate and anyone who wants to be in the party must be prepared to be led, it means that they are not ready to be led, they just want to lead. That’s not leadership, leadership is about ‘you lead’ and if you are not there you accept also to be led, our friends can’t accept to be led. Those three people went and joined the UPND, they destroyed the party by telling Zambians that Edgar Lungu and all of us that we are corrupt. After destroying the party, the Zambian people agreed with them that we are corrupt and then they came back to the party. And those are some of the people that contributed to our loss,” he said.

And Mwila said the people who were referred to as hijackers by Kambwili and GBM had been more committed to the party.

“They are saying that they have hijacked the party, look at the commitment from honourable [Raphael] Nakacinda, the commitment to the party. Honourable Nakacinda has been sleeping in the cells because of the party. Very few of those have slept in the cells because of the party. Even in terms of commitment, those they are saying came from MMD are more committed than them. Those that they are saying have hijacked the party, honourable Nakacinda, [Chitalu] Chilufya, and [Brian] Mundubile, those people remained in the party. They were committed to the party, they suffered for the party until now. How can you tell them that they are MMD? What is the difference between them and Chilufya, because Chilufya came into the party in 2008. So how many years has Chilufya been in the party from 2008 up to now? Honourable Mundubile came into the party in 2011, he is 12 years in the party, how do you call them MMD?” he wondered.

“If they failed to campaign it’s better they pull out of the race. Party members are free to choose whoever they want because all of us are members of the party. You can’t segregate that there are new members and old members, all of them are members. Even those who came in January this year, you are a member of the party you can’t be segregated.

Membership is equal, people must know that membership is equal and as we go to the general conference, anyone who is contesting is a member of the party including Monde. Monde came in the party actually in 2016, 2017, he has been in the party for more than six years. Look at the commitment, he’s more committed than even those who boast that they formed the party”.

Mwila advised PF members to listen to senior members of the party like him as they head towards the convention.
“So that’s my advise, and as we go to the general conference, as a senior member of the party who has been in this party for 21 years now, 21 years solid, I have never been to any other political party, so people must listen to senior members of the party. When we advise, it means we know what we are talking about. So they have to take this matter of elections very serious that they have to choose people with integrity, people who have credibility, people who will be easier to be sold once we take them to the Zambian people,” said Mwila

‘I WON’T ALLOW TERROR TO COME BACK -HH

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has warned that he will not allow Zambia to go back to the times of terror and abuse of citizens’ rights and freedoms.

President HICHILEMA says many Zambians died at the hands of politicians prior to the 2021 General elections and he will not allow that to come back.

He says GOD has given him a big heart to forgive and an opportunity to bring sanity to the country and create jobs but the president has warned the former ruling party not to take that for granted and misunderstand his tolerance.

Addressing the UPND Copperbelt Provincial Conference in Kitwe today, President HICHILEMA further warned that government will not be intimidated but will continue fighting corruption by following the law.

The President said the UPND’s duty is to take the country to a higher level from where it was left by the previous government.

He said his administration’s preoccupation is addressing challenges in education and other sectors and not politicking because many people would have died in Zambia had he allowed his members to avenge the terror they were subjected to.

President HICHILEMA said he has dedicated this year to addressing challenges around the disbursement of the Constituency Development Fund -CDF- and improving the welfare of citizens.

The Head of State noted that government will soon review the law on CDF and allow District Commissioners to sit in the CDF Committees.

President HICHILEMA said he will this year ensure that government and the ruling party work together so that members are given the power to follow up and check on CDF projects.

The President added that the ruling party will also employ programmes officers in constituencies to help the grassroots apply for empowerment funds under the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission -CEEC-.

He however urged UPND members on the Copperbelt not to allow the opposition to divide them by spreading all sorts of lies.

The President said he was shocked with lies that First Lady MUTINTA HICHILEMA is linked to the ownership of a mine in Mkushi yet she does not run any business in the family.

He advised party members to always dialogue over any challenges that members maybe faced with.

And President HICHILEMA said his struggle is now in sorting challenges with the Mines so that Zambians can easily do business.

He added that his administration is investing in Zambians and wants people to buy more of locally manufactured products.

Meanwhile, President HICHILEMA counseled party members to embrace new members from other parties and share the UPND principles.

And UPND Copperbelt Province Chairman ELISHA MATAMBO said the UPND managed to win elections despite the then ruling party having all machinery at their disposal and denying President HICHILEMA chance to campaign.

He said the ruling party is now controlling the Copperbelt because of having won a number of seats at all levels.

Mr. MATAMBO however acknowledged that the UPND had stopped mobilizing after winning elections but has since gone back to the grassroots and resumed mobilization after sorting out various challenges.

He applauded women and youths for having played a huge role in campaigning for the President in 2021.

Chinese space rocket fragments land in Texas

0

Last week, a four-ton chunk of Chinese space debris fell uncontrollably to Earth.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because it has occurred more than once in the past.

According to US Space Command, on March 8 the remains of a Chinese rocket that had in June carried three military espionage satellites disintegrated above Texas.

Over 17,000 mph (2,735 kph), fragments of the Long March rocket sliced through the atmosphere before breaking apart.

The fallen debris was a piece of space junk in low earth orbit before it conducted “an uncontrolled descent,” according to satellite tracking data.

The debris came from a 135-foot-long Chang Zheng 2D rocket, capable of carrying about 8,000 pounds of cargo into low earth orbit, according to information from the China National Space Administration.

On June 23, the rocket called Y-64, took off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in central China and successfully deployed three spy satellites into orbit.

The spy satellites were targeted over the South China Sea, astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics told USNI News.

Like most satellites after dropping off their payload, the second stage becomes space junk which can slowly circle the planet for years before plunging to Earth.

Thankfully the debris field was over the least populated counties in Texas.

While US officials are still determining if any debris has hit the ground, Chinese officials have not acknowledged the incident at the time of writing.

Last November, a massive, 21-tonne piece of Chinese space junk made an uncontrolled free fall to Earth.

Nasa accused Beijing last year of ‘failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris’ after parts of a Chinese rocket landed in the Indian Ocean.

The country’s first space station, Tiangong-1, crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 2016 after Beijing confirmed it lost control. An 18-ton rocket fell uncontrolled in May 2020.

The space debris incident follows the US shooting down a Chinese ‘spy balloon’ over the Atlantic Ocean after it crossed over sensitive military sites.

PE tutor, 101, awarded degree 60 years after graduating

0

60 years after graduating, a 101-year-old PE instructor whose classes were disrupted by World War II missiles has finally received her diploma.

retired educators
When Madge Brown and Sheila Gordon, both 94, attended a teacher training institution in the 1930s and 1940s, they did not receive a degree; however, they have now been presented with the crucial document.

Teachers at the period completed two- or three-year programs; later, a graduate- or postgraduate-level degree from a university was required.

Since their courses were not recognized as the degree-level academics they are today when Madge and Sheila graduated from Nonington College of Physical Education in Kent, their degrees were not awarded.

Now the University of London is awarding those who missed out with an honorary Bachelor of Education degrees to thank them for decades of service.

The university was the awarding body of the college which closed in 1986.

Madge, 101, now living in Isle of Wight, started her three-year course in 1938, but had to suspend it for a year to work as a nurse after the start of the war.

She graduated in 1942 – despite one of her hockey lessons being disrupted by a V2 missile flying overhead and exploding nearby.

Sheila, also from the Isle of Wight, attended the college between 1946 and 1949, after the war was over.

Madge said it had ‘been a long time coming’.

She added: ‘I went to Nonington to train to be a PE mistress, and I can honestly say at the age of 101, that the three years at Nonington were the happiest days of my life.

‘I’m rather old to get a degree at 101, but it was the training at Nonington that has kept me going.

‘I’m very grateful for this, but it has been a long time coming.

‘When I left college, they always said it should be a proper graduation because of the hard work we did.

‘Why they never made the diploma of physical education a degree I don’t know, because it was very intense – we did human dissection at the university, cutting up bodies, to teach gymnastics.

‘Teaching has been a great advantage. I think it gives you confidence, and the teaching profession does something to you – it makes you more self-assured at everything you do. I’ve loved every minute of it.

‘Whatever age you are, enjoy life to the full, and never stop exercising – and when you get to over 100, still exercise as much as you can, because it’s worthwhile.’

During the war, Nonington College was evacuated to Avoncroft, and then to Grafton Manor, both in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

Madge took a year out while the move took place to do nursing work.

In her early teaching years during the war, she remembers teaching a hockey lesson and hearing a V2 rocket coming over.

She blew her whistle, everyone dived for the floor and after the explosion she blew her whistle once more, and everyone jumped up and carried on with the lesson.

Both Madge and Sheila were presented their degrees on February 22 by Professor Mary Stiasny, pro-vice chancellor.

Sheila said: ‘I became a teacher because I was always fascinated by Nonington College.

‘We had family living nearby so I saw it quite often and thought ‘I wonder what goes on there’.

‘I’d just come back from being evacuated the first time when I saw it, and I thought, what a good idea – none of the horrible bits of war, it was enjoyable games.

‘I loved teaching people to win, and to lose – I think even today that’s very difficult to do.

‘Team games were really my thing. I liked people to be able to lose and take it.

‘I think it stands you in great stead for the future if you can take the knocks. It was quite a task getting some people who couldn’t lose to enjoy it!

‘When I was [at Nonington College] we didn’t talk about the teaching certificates – it was whether the war was over, and whether it was going to start again, and to get everything out of life that we possibly can.

‘The certificates really didn’t make much difference, I didn’t expect to get any brilliant certificate anyway – but if I could just keep going, and have enjoyable games, and pass on the fact that games are pleasant and not about fighting, I think I would have enjoyed it just as much.’

The University of London is working to present those who hold teaching certificates from now non-existent London area teaching colleges, and where the University was the awarding body, with honorary Bachelor of Education degrees.

Of the 26 former teaching colleges in London, all but seven have merged into other institutions, with Nonington College of Physical Education one of the exceptions.

HICHILEMA WARNS EDGAR LUNGU TO STOP CHAMPIONING COME BACK, CALLING THE ACT STUPID (KUTUMPA UKO)

HICHILEMA WARNS EDGAR LUNGU TO STOP CHAMPIONING COME BACK, CALLING THE ACT STUPID (KUTUMPA UKO)
…I am not supposed to live myself, I should have died a longtime ago, but God protected us
By Correspondent Reporter
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has described the call of former president Edgar Chagwa Lungu to come back into active politics as stupid (kutumpa uko).

And President Hichilema said he was not supposed to live, he could have died a longtime ago but he was still alive because God protected him.

Addressing party officials in Kitwe, Monday, President Hichilema said many people died at the hands of the PF especially in the last seven years of former President Edger Lungu’s regime.

He said it was under this period UPND cadre Lawrence Banda was killed in Kaoma during a by-election.
President Hichilema who kept on saying kutumpa uko said at no time will Zambia go back to the ugly scenes as witnessed under the PF regime.

“We will not allow our country to go back into those dark days ikona man, Ikona man, God saved most of you, I am not supposed to be alive myself, I should have died a longtime ago, but God protected us, but in a way a part died like Lawrence Banda, so many of which we didn’t get to know who was killed by who, a part of you is gone, a part of me is gone, those are our family members. Those are citizens of Zambia, ndebwelelapo, uleikala pesa? Uleikala pesa so that you start killing all our young people? Kutumpa Uko, kutumpa uko and I am serious I am not joking. You have never heard me talk like that, kutumpa uko,” he said.

President Hichilema pointed out the attacks that had engulfed the Copperbelt Youth Day celebrations accusing the PF to have been behind the violence.

He said Zambia was not Lusaka but everywhere else, adding that commemorations of that nature should take place anywhere without people hacking each other.

The Head of State said it was the highest order of stupidness to start throwing machetes.
“We have a youth day in Kitwe on the Copperbelt, it has never happened before where a President comes to lay wreath and show people of Zambia that Zambia is not Lusaka. Zambia is not Lusaka alone, Zambia is Chipata, Zambia is Mongu, Zambia is Kasma, Zambia is Mansa, Zambia is Choma, Zambia is Solwezi kaofela. Now we come for a peaceful youth day now people start throwing machetes, kutumpa uko, kutumpa uko. No normal Zambian will allow the violence we saw under the seven years of those colleagues, seven years of those colleagues, will not be intimated,” he said.

And President Hichilema has warned that it is stupidness of its highest order for anyone to start thinking that he will not be followed just because of the system is slow to catch them, in apparent reference to former President Edgar Lungu.

“We shall fight corruption, if you stole public money the system will follow it is the law, if the system is slow and you think it is not coming for you kutumpa uko. Anyway, our duty is to take our country from where we found it to up there, that is our duty. Fimbi twakana, fimbi twakana, ifyabuwelewele twakana, we just want to take the country from the bottom where people took it. They inherited a good country and they took it to the bottom, now we have to lift it from the bottom and take it where it belongs. That is what we are doing everyday and every time, tatulala utulo, iyo tuletontonkya, how we can quickly take the country up there,” he said.
President Hichilema said if he had allowed his party officials and cadres to fight back after the 2021 general election victory, most people could have died.

He said he decided to protect everyone even those that beat them because Zambia was bigger than an individual and the pain he went through.

“Imisepela, abana banshiwa amasukulu fyonsefye mukwai twalanda that is our duty that is what preoccupied our mind and not ifyakale ifyabuwelewele. Twaisa ku youth day mwatampa ulubuli kutumpa uko, kutumpa uko. If I had allowed these people to avenge to revenge after the 2021 general election victory people would have died in this country. People would have died in this country, we said the country is bigger than the pain we went through and we protected everybody including him (Edgar Lungu), we protected everyone even balya abaletupuma we protected them, now we come here you want to come with those ugly things kutumpa uko, anyway our duty is to take the country up there,” said President Hichilema.

WE ARE BECOMING STRONGER EVERYDAY…. the people can’t wait for 2026 to bring PF back into office – MUSUNGA

WE ARE BECOMING STRONGER EVERYDAY – MUSUNGA
…. the people can’t wait for 2026 to bring PF back into office
Lunga District…. Monday March 13, 2023 (SMART EAGLES)
Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee Francis Musunga says the former ruling party PF is becoming stronger everyday.
Mr. Musunga says the ruling UPND government has proved that it is a failed project.

Mr. Musunga, who is also Luapula Provincial Chairperson, says the UPND has failed to deliver according to their 2021 campaign promises.
He said this at Nsamba market in Luapula Constituency in Lunga District, Luapula Province when he addressed the residents who had come from the four chiefdoms to commemorate International Youth Day.

“How much are you buying a 25kg bag of mealie meal here? Is that the price the UPND promised you while in opposition? Since all of us have seen that the UPND has no capacity to govern this country, the onus is on us to ensure that come 2026 we kick them out of office. But this can only be done if we are united as people of Luapula and beyond,” he said.

“Some people who I know that supported the UPND while in opposition until they formed government in 2021, have come to me to apologize that they indeed made a grave mistake to vote for the UPND. What I tell them is that you are the same people who can remove them from office in 2026. So let’s remain united and work together in order to regain power in 2026.”

He said the Central Committee remains committed to ensuring that come 2026, the former ruling party will once again form government.
“They (UPND) keep on saying that PF is a dead political party. But they keep on persecuting our members. Why would they focus on persecuting our members if they are from a dead party?” He added.

“They talk about PF being corrupt. Who has been found guilty of all those allegations by a competent court? No one! So they say all these things just to distract us. But we remain focused because we have resolved to redeem the people of Zambia from the UPND’s mess.”

The Fear Of Leaving Office Lives In Many Sitting Presidents- HH

Fear of leaving office lives in many sitting presidents – HH

By Kombe Chimpinde and Walusungu Lundu

THE fear of leaving office lives in many sitting presidents, says President Hakainde Hichilema.

And former president Rupiah Banda’s brother James says ‘’Zambia does not need hot temperatures in governance’’.

Speaking at the first memorial for Banda at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka yesterday, he said Banda’s act of leaving office when he lost elections in 2011 without resistance was a lesson for leaders.

“The speakers before me had said a number of things and as I said yesterday at the Youth Indaba, we always learn. We must always be attentive to what others are saying in any occasion and I was seated there listening to speeches that have been given – all befitting about president Banda including RB’s five lessons. A Jere tamvwa (Mr Jere we have heard),” he said in apparent reference to Banda’s former press aide Dickson Jere who spoke before President Hichilema. “Lessons are there to be applied. He (Banda) truly was father of the nation; the whole nation. You have already heard how jovial he was. I have an experience with one of his jovial moods that I had with him. President Banda was a believer in democracy. He was truly a believer in the rule of law.”

He said Zambians remembered Banda for having done what was difficult for human beings to do.

“When time came to leave the presidency, he had only served three years in the presidency, how difficult it was to give it away even after the elections,’’ President Hichilema said. ‘’I must say for many, not just in this country but I do meet presidents now and we talk. The fear of leaving office lives in many sitting [presidents]; it lives in them and RB handed over power without resistance after three years of service. Lesson for all of us, a Jere (Mr Jere), we can add the lesson.’’ President Hichilema said.

President Hichilema also recalled Banda’s hope in young leadership by citing Banda’s lecture at Boston University in the US where he said there was need for a new generation of leaders.

He quoted from Banda’s Boston lecture that: “’If democracy is going to be secured in countries like Zambia, if development is going to take root in the country, old leaders cannot cling to power or attempt to consolidate power at all costs’. End of quote.’’

“That is RB. Quite touching! We are indebted to RB for his crucial role, the roles he played at the time when somebody needed someone like him,” President Hichilema said further.

He also recalled Banda’s efforts to bring him and former president Edgar Lungu to the negotiating table a day after voting in the 2021 general election.

President Hichilema said although the first two attempts had failed because Lungu did not show up, Banda still persuaded the two leaders to meet and dialogue.

“RB was there phoning, asking people to go to his house and I was one of those he asked to go to his house. I went there; in fact there were two other attempts. Two meetings were organised between my predecessor, the sixth president and myself and both of them did not materialize,’’ explained President Hichilema. ‘’But because of who he is, even when the second meeting was called, I still went to RB’s house .Did you know that? I don’t think many of you knew it. The third attempt worked, the rest is history. The presidents that came before us, vice-presidents that are there; it does not matter which party. It is about what we can learn from each other to make the country better for our citizens.”

Banda died at his home on March 11, 2022 aged 85 after succumbing to colon cancer.

He ascended to the country’s highest office in 2008 following the death of then president Levy Mwanawasa.

And in a speech read on his behalf by Brigadier General Neba Phiri, James said Banda would have loved to bring President Hichilema and Lungu together.

He said it would be beneficial for the two leaders to speak to each other from time to time.

“I will be failing in my duties if I did not bring a reminder to Your Excellency regarding what your brother RB said to you at one time. And I quote: ‘Mr President, go to any country in the world and market Zambia, and don’t listen to people who have not been in presidency to lecture to you on this subject…’ I was there when he spoke to you on these words,” James said. “Mr President, I wish to appeal, and in addition that you have a brother in your predecessor, His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu who was once President. Surely, it would be beneficial for the two of you to speak to each other from time to time.”

James said he saw a lot of good will in President Hichilema’s plans for the country.

“I am taking advantage of this venue we are in to convey this message that Zambia does not need hot temperatures in governance. I bet my brother RB would have loved to bring the two of you together,’’ said James. ‘’I see a lot of good vision and good will in your plans for the country, Your Excellency. This is a plea from an ordinary man from Chiparamba where RB came from in Eastern Province in Chipata.”

Lubinda asks Economic Court to give him more time

0

FORMER Justice Minister Given Lubinda has asked the Economic and Financial crimes court to give him enough time to peruse through the documents presented by an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arresting officer, Mr. Friday Tembo in readiness for cross-examination.

Lubinda through his lawyer Mr. Makebi Zulu submitted that they needed enough time to question a witness who is an investigations officer and to go through the documents he presented before the court.

In this matter, Lubinda, also Patriotic Front (PF) acting president pleaded not guilty to four counts of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime contrary to section 71 (1) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010, of the Laws of Zambia. When the matter came up on Thursday before magistrate Sandford Ngobola sitting under the EFC Court, Mr Tembo who is also an Assistant Director of Investigations testified how parliament paid Lubinda K6, 147, 134.84 as gross net and K3,147,429 as net payment.

Mr. Tembo submitted before the court that after doing the analysis, he discovered that Lubinda’s Kwacha account had only K24, 360.

“In the matter at hand, I wish to indicate that the ACC received a report of abuse of office and corruption in the manner former Minister of Agriculture Mr. Given Lubinda contracted a loan of US$300, 000 using his company director and shareholders called High view Investment. Highview Investment entered into a purported loan agreement with the company called Quindao Cotton Industrial Limited in China, according to Quindao had linked to the company called China Africa Cotton Limited based in Zambia Chipata,’’ he said.

He indicated that he established in his investigations that Highview Company had names of Lubinda with shares of K2, 250 and Namakau Lubinda indicated as directors and shareholders.

Mr. Tembo said he also established that when he looked at the document, he saw that one of the signatories to the agreement was Mr. Wang Shuanyuan of China who was holding 1 percent of the shares.

24-hour border welcome

We welcome the agreement between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to start operating border on a 24-hour basis on their common border to ensure the smooth flow of traffic at the various border facilities to enhance trade, not only for two countries but also for other countries in SADC and COMESA region.

We feel this agreement will not only improve the flow of traffic at various border facilities but will also serve as a curtain-raiser to the introduction of a 24-hour economy in this country. With the Zambian government actively considering the prospects of introducing a 24-hour economy such interventions as opening borders 24 hours daily is a step in the right direction. The idea of having borders operating 24 hours between the two countries will boost trade in the region as well.

The Kasumbalesa border will greatly benefit from this arrangement for it is one of the busiest crossing points in this part of Africa.
The long line of trucks that sometimes stretch from Kasumbalesa into Chambishi would be a thing of the past as they are likely to be cleared within days.

But unfortunately, Zambia will not fully maximize the trade benefits that will come as a result of this agreement when Statutory Instrument 76 which restricts public service vehicles from moving a night is in place. We suggest that Government should revoke SI 76 so that cross-border traders can also benefit from the agreement to have the borders open 24 hours daily.

We understand that the reasoning behind the enactment of SI 76 was done in good faith in an effort to reduce the high number of traffic accidents attributed to night travel. The enactment of SI 76 has really affected the business sector since the time it was instituted in 2016 and its revocation would help the cross border traders too as they can travel at their convenience.

It is a well-known fact that the major cause of road traffic accidents in this country are the damaged roads and if this issue was dealt with then the issue of restricting night travel should be taken off the table. It will be a plus if the cooperation between the two countries is extended to developing and upgrading the roads that lead to these border crossing points.

The aim of the agreement to have all the borders operate for 24 hours to quicken the flow of traffic is not going to serve its purpose if the roads between the two countries continue to be in a deplorable state. It will be more beneficial if the leadership in the two countries went a step further to develop the major roads that lead to these border posts which will help in fostering trade in the region. The agreement is a step in the right direction if it is exploited further by developing a good road network that will greatly contribute to the economic development of the two .

PAP moves to combat harmful practices arising from accusations of witchcraft in Africa

Concerned about the widespread effects of harmful accusations of witchcraft, the Pan-African Parliament has come up with a raft of guidelines that provide a holistic approach to dealing with this issue.

The guidelines took centre stage at the joint sittings of the Committee on Gender, Youth, Family and People with Disability, the Committee on Health, Labour and Social Affairs, and the Committee on Education, Culture, Tourism and Human Resources at the PAP headquarters in Midrand, South Africa. Sittings of the Permanent Committees of the PAP begun on 6 March and will run up to 17 March under the AU theme of the year “The Year of AcFTA: Accelerating the Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.”

Speaking at the capacity building workshop for the continental Parliamentarians, Project Manager overseeing Disability Rights at the University of Pretoria Centre for Human Rights, Ms Innocentia Mgijima said the PAP Guidelines on Harmful Practices Related to Accusations of Witchcraft and Ritual Attacks are aimed at ensuring an enabling legal environment to eradicate these harmful practices.
“The belief in witchcraft is not necessary but there is no denying there are people who believe in it. People accused of witchcraft are often banished from their communities, stigmatised, and dispossessed of belongings. The Guidelines seek to deal with such scenarios, said Ms Innocentia Mgijima.

She added that the Guidelines also provide non-legal and community based responses in dealing with accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks. The adoption of non-legal community measures encompass education and awareness.

In addition to discussing the Guidelines on Witchcraft, the capacitation workshop also scrutinised the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights on Social Protection and Social Security, and the Plan of Action on the Family in Africa.

Acknowledging the central role played by the
family in the society, Senior Welfare Officer at the African Union Commission Mr Lefhoko Kesamang, noted that harmful practices related to witchcraft accusations affect the family.

“Witchcraft should be understood in the context of the family. When one familyaccused and uprooted from the community, the whole family leaves and everyone is affected. The African family network is the prime mechanism for coping with social, economic and political adversity in the continent so we want to make sure the family is recognised and it contributes to the Africa We Want,” said Mr Lefhoko Kesamang.

Chairperson of the Committee on Health, Hon Jean Patrice France Quirin proffered:

“We all agree that these harmful practices should be eliminated and this is not easy but we are willing as the PAP to work towards this. The Guidelines on Harmful Practices Related to Accusations of Witchcraft and Ritual Attacks is testament to this.”

There Are So Many Signs To Show That Edgar Lungu Is Still In Active Politics And Hungry For Political Power

0

A STATESMAN ISN’T SUPPOSED TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY ACTIVE POLITICAL OFFICIALS & CADRES.

  • THERE ARE SO MANY SIGNS TO SHOW THAT EDGAR LUNGU IS STILL IN ACTIVE POLITICS AND HUNGRY FOR POLITICAL POWER. –

By: Maxwell Nsama.
Monday || March 13th, 2023.

When a former Republican President (Head of Government & State) is still surrounded by Senior Officials of the Political Party that he led as Republican President then he is still active in Politics… The Constitution of Zambia provides that when an incumbent Republican President seeking another term loses an Election and after the swear-in ceremony of his successor, he is given a duration of at least 6 months to decide whether to resign from active politics and begin to draw Presidential Retirement Benefits & Pension or continue with active politics to bounce back to Power.

Edgar Lungu as the Sixth Republican President on his path to seek a third term after holding the Office of the Republican President twice lost the August 12th, 2021 Presidential Elections by a million vote margin and handed over the Instruments of State Power and Authority to his successor the incumbent 7th Republican President of Zambia, His Excellency, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema on August 24th, 2021 and later wrote to both CABINET and PF that he resigned from active politics on August 28th, 2021 and has since been enjoying Presidential Retirement Benefits unfortunately he has failed to conduct himself as a STATESMAN and there are numerous SIGNS to show of his behavior.

HERE ARE THE MAJOR SIGNS TO SHOW THAT EDGAR LUNGU HAS FAILED TO CONDUCT HIMSELF AS A STATESMAN.

Firstly, it’s his position of accusing President Hakainde Hichilema and his ADMINISTRATION for coming for him through the arrests, charges and prosecutions which he describes as harassment & persecution of those that served in his ADMINISTRATION as well as his relatives. Edgar Lungu has gone to extents of demanding that Government lift his Presidential Immunity according to him, it’s a quicker way of the LAW coming to him without having his Political Cadres and relatives having to pay for his sins and tolerance. As if it is not enough, Edgar Lungu has been describing President Hakainde Hichilema as a hypocrite which is an INSULT.

It’s a known issue that Edgar Lungu through late 4th Republican President, Mr. Rupiah Banda begged for mercy from President HICHILEMA and promised to operate with him on the path of rebuilding the Country but Edgar Lungu has failed to live up to his words and what is happening to him and his people are merely consequences of their actions.

Secondly, it’s on the position of those who were appointed as PF Members of the Central Committee after his resignation letters from active politics and PF President. Edgar Lungu and his Secretary General resigned on the same date hence leaving a leadership vacuum in the PF to trigger an immediate General Conference (Convention) after 3 months to elect a new Party President (who would appoint his Vice-President, Secretary General etc) and Members of the Central Committee but it’s been a year and 7 months without the PF having a public President and a newly elected MCCs.

In June 2022, we witnessed the likes of Chishimba Kambwili, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba (Vice Chairperson for Information and Publicity), Dr. Canisius Banda, Bowman Lusambo, Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya, Miss Charity Kapona, Cll Tapiwa Mhango and Japhen Mwakalombe being included as newly appointed – ratified Members of the Central Committee therefore the question is, who appointed them and whose PF Presidential signature is on their appointment and approval documents. Given Lubinda as Vice-President appointed by Edgar Lungu on the date of his resignation has no power to conduct himself as acting President. The deputy Secretary General has no power to conduct himself as acting Secretary General where the Secretary General position is vacant and the Members of the Central Committee have no power to appoint and approve any new Member of the Central Committee.

Since Hon. Miles Sampa has sued both the PF Vice-President and Deputy Secretary General in the Court of Law, there is no doubt that soon the truth will surface of Edgar Lungu still holding on to the PF PRESIDENCY as documents will show that he has been signing them this is the more reason that Edgar Lungu and his MCC are massively attacking Hon. Miles Sampa and seek to expel him as to trigger a Parliamentary By-Election so that he loses his Parliamentary Seats as they hope for.

Lastly, it’s his position of having Senior PF Officials as his advisors and company to every events he attends. A STATESMAN enjoying Presidential Retirement Benefits & Pension must have a professional company and advisors who are not politically aligned to avoid the need of growing Political Ambitions unfortunately for Edgar Lungu, he has continued to accompany himself with those he illegally appointed as PF Members of the Central Committee and mingling with individuals facing criminal arrests, charges and prosecutions. Edgar Lungu is also seen describing PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA as a liar and failure who deceived the People of Zambia, surely!! How can a STATESMAN issue such a statement in the full view of the press and Senior PF Officials are seen to be cheering to him during the time that his son Dalitso Lungu was summoned by the Joint Investigation Task…?

Edgar Lungu is at LIBERTY to be ACTIVE in Politics by giving up the Statesmanship Status but he should stop defrauding the Government and State of enjoying Presidential Retirement Benefits and Pension which include a 80% Salary of an incumbent Republican President, Immunity from Arrests, Charges & Prosecutions, Medical Allowances, Housing Allowances, State Security & Secret Intelligence Services and a State Funeral while holding on to the PF PRESIDENCY. Edgar Lungu should for once do something right and good for the Country by being a law abiding citizen otherwise his ending will be very bad and shameful compared to his 2021 Election loss.

Ten Questions For President Hakainde Hichilema- Sean Tembo

TEN QUESTIONS FOR PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. Since student bursaries are now loans which are recovered in full by the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB), why is Government still only giving these student loans to less than 10% of applicants? Why not give student loans to all applicants since this is no longer an expenditure but an investment? In fact, why not extend these student loans to not only Government universities but to private universities and colleges as well?

2. Given that the whole idea of going on an IMF program was to obtain debt relief, and further given that despite getting on the IMF program there is no debt relief that has been forthcoming as western multilateral institutions like World Bank continue bickering with our biggest bilateral lender; China, then why not just withdraw from the IMF program because it has clearly failed to achieve it’s intended goals? Why should your Government continue to implement IMF austerity measures such as monthly reviews of fuel prices, ZESCO tariff increments etcetera, when there is no tangible benefit in sight?

3. Since we have the money to construct the Lusaka – Ndola road through NAPSA, and also given that we have the competence and experience to manage toll gates through NRFA, why can’t we only hire Micro Ocean Investments to do construction only? After they construct the road, we pay them off and NRFA continues to collect toll fees as they have done with other roads? Why do we need to complicate this otherwise simple transaction by making Micro Ocean Investments borrow money from NAPSA when your Government can borrow the money from NAPSA? Why do we need to be tied to Micro Ocean Investments for 25 years?

4. It has now been more than 18 months since you closed Kasenseli Gold Mine in Solwezi, and in-between we have heard all sort of stories of corruption and illegal mining involving some Zambia National Service senior officers. Given that we have a national gold mining company called Zambia Gold Mining Company Limited, which was created by the previous regime before they left office, what is so difficult with giving Kasenseli Gold Mine to our national gold mining company so that they can mine this gold and increase our reserves at BOZ, instead of allowing ZNS to continue plundering this gold?

5. Given that your Government has acknowledged it’s failure to deliver adequate farming inputs for the 2022/2023 farming season, and also given the fact that there will be a definite poor harvest among peasant and subsistence farmers across the country, what arrangements are you making to send relief maize across the country? Or perhaps you believe that your obligations ended with the apology you issued to farmers for non-delivery of farming inputs? Do you think farmers will be eating your apology until the next farming season?

6. Given that of late, the Kwacha is depreciating at a very fast pace and is likely to reach K25 to the dollar by end of June 2023, what interventions is your Government putting in place to arrest this free fall of our currency? Could you perhaps speak to your “friends” in the mining sector, and specifically at First Quantum Mine so that they can start remitting the gross proceeds of mineral sales back into the Zambian banking system instead of keeping the money in foreign banks?

7. Given the current high cost of living and unprecedented unemployment levels, largely brought about by the monthly reviews of fuel prices, are you still going ahead with your planned 30% increase in electricity tariffs? Don’t you think this will completely kill whatever is left of our local industries and totally impoverish the Zambian citizen? Or perhaps the more pertinent question is; do you care?

8. Given the fact that up to now, you have refused to declare your assets as President of the Republic of Zambia, do you think Zambians can take you seriously when you talk about accountability and transparency in the management of national financial resources? If you are refusing to be transparent and accountable at a personal level, then what are the chances that you will be transparent and accountable when managing ndalama za dziko?

9. Given the fact that your own UPND members have linked your wife, the First Lady, to illegal manganese mining at Sacko Mine, don’t you think it is necessary that the First Lady should publicly exculpate herself instead of rushing to send the police to arrest the UPND officials that have accused the First Lady? Especially given the fact that the explanations given by Gilbert Liswaniso and Obvious Mwaliteta who are said to be business partners of your wife in this illegal mining operation, are not satisfying. For the record, your UPND National Youth Chairman; Gilbert Liswaniso says a Chinese man just called him and gave him shares in this illegal mine free of charge. Given that this whole saga smells of high level corruption, don’t you think the First Lady should publicly exculpate herself before you rush to arrest and intimidate the complainants?

10. Apart from taking photos with Facebook celebrities when you visit the Copperbelt, when exactly do you think you will be able to resolve the issues at Mopani and KCM? Do you fully understand the adverse impact of your indecision at Mopani and KCM on the economy and welfare of the people of Copperbelt Province in particular and Zambia in general? What would it take for you to embrace a sense of urgency in your decision making on these matters? Is it a case of being afraid to make a wrong decision or perhaps you have more sinister motives such as ensuring that the two mines are totally dilapidated so that they can be sold for a song to your friends at Anglo American Corporation?

WE SEE REMNANTS OF ONE PARTY STATE

…weaponising law enforcement agencies to deal with perceived opponents – Lifuka

By Fanny Kalonda

GOVERNANCE expert Reuben Lifuka has noted that there is weak separation of power among the three arms of government adding that the executive will always have an upper hand.

He told The Mast in an interview that, “I think if we look at the state of democracy in Zambia, we are still a work in progress. We’ve been a multiparty democracy for over 30 years. We still see remnants of a one party state”.

Lifuka, a vice-chair – Transparency International and an advocate for good governance, transparency, accountability and environmental sustainability, said there is still a lot of power that reside in the presidency that needs to be addressed.

He noted that there are remnants of what happened in previous regimes where the ruling party could weaponise the law enforcement to deal with perceived opponents of the ruling party.

“We also see very weak separation of powers between the three arms of government because of the fact that the Executive still retains the power to provide financial support or to in a way allocate budgets to the Legislature as well as the Judiciary. There is no financial autonomy of the Judiciary or the Legislature. As long as that arrangement continues, the Executive will always have an upper hand on the other arms of government,” Lifuka said. “When we look at the appointments made by the President and where the President by the Constitution is mandated to make appointments, there is still a lot of powers that reside in the presidency. And these are some of the things that we need to address. But also we talk about protecting the rule of law which is important, but we still see remnants of what happened in previous regimes where the ruling party could weaponise the Zambia Police or any other law enforcement agency in order to deal with perceived opponents of the ruling party.”

He said there is need to strengthen the country’s legal regime and undertake governance reforms.

“All these are not really adding up to how we, in a way, uphold the tenets of democracy – where we have tolerance for divergent views, where we protect the rights of freedoms of expression, freedom of association, etc. So there’s still work that needs to be done,” he said. “We need to have in place appropriate laws like the access to information, which should enhance the freedom of expression, and freedom of association of every Zambian. We need to conclude the constitutional reform process so that we expand the Bill of Rights to go beyond civil and political rights, to include third generation rights which economic and social rights. We need to strengthen the legal regime, but most importantly, we need to undertake governance reforms.”

He said the government needs to put in place a comprehensive governance reform process, which allows to improve access to justice where the judiciary is concerned.

Lifuka noted that the country still sees remnants of a one party state.

“I think if we look at the state of democracy in Zambia, we are still a work in progress. We’ve been a multiparty democracy for over 30 years. We still see remnants of a one party state. If you look at the dominance of the ruling party in the legislature, for instance, it is still very reminiscence of a one party state in that the ruling party can get through parliament any law that they would like to be passed because they’ve got a dominance of numbers,” he noted. “Therefore, it is the wish of many of us that government puts in place a comprehensive governance reform process, which allows us to improve access to justice where the judiciary is concerned, which allows our legislature to be more accessible, and not one that is just tipped in rules, some of them very outdated rules while we also allow local governments to really be responsive to the needs of the community.”

He added that the local government system does not yet respond to the needs of communities.

“The local government system as we know it at the moment does not yet respond to the needs and specific needs of communities. We have a number of local governments that are essentially or technically bankrupt. They do not have sufficient resources to undertake their mandate,” said Lifuka. “So all these then call for reform. How do we reform governance so that we provide support to the people, the most marginalised people in communities?”

Youths Played An Important Role In The 2021 General Elections But Their Benefits After The Outcome Still Remain Obscure- Hon. Dr Chitalu Chilufya

0

YOUTHS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE 2021 GENERAL ELECTIONS BUT THEIR BENEFITS AFTER THE OUTCOME STILL REMAIN OBSCURE-CC

…but encourages young people to focus on science , technology and hard work in all their undertaking.

LUSAKA— Sunday March 12th 2023

SMART EAGLES

The Patriotic Front (PF) Presidential Candidate Hon. Dr Chitalu Chilufya has encouraged young people to focus on science , technology and hard work in all their undertaking.

Dr. Chilufya who is also former Minister of health told Smart Eagles on this year’s youth day commemoration that this is the only transformation that will drive the agenda for sustainable and and accelerated development.

“So, my message to our youth on this important day is to reset to a new paradigm where innovation, science technology and hard work are pitched high in all their undertakings. This is the transformation that will drive the agenda for sustainable and accelerated development ” He said .

This year’s youth day falls under the theme ‘Transforming minds for accelerated youth development.’

And Dr. Chilufya believes that this year’s theme is necessary because of the current times.

“Youth Day theme “Transforming Minds for Accelerated Youth Development” is an appropriate one for the season we are in. This transformation can only be driven by the energy of youth which represents hope of sustainable assured succession in all facets of life.” He reiterated.

He shares the view that freedom fighters fought for the political freedom that Zambians enjoy adding that the best way to honor their sacrifice is to embark on the positive transformational trajectory.

“Youths of yesterday fought for our political freedom; the best way to honour their sacrifice is to embark on this transformational trajectory to emancipate the nation from its economic turmoils” He said .

“But our recent history unfortunately does not seem to afford our youths their rightful political inheritance because they are often reserved for the sidelines and sometimes as tools for political violence.”He lamented.

“Those with executive power must work with all stakeholders to put a halt to this. Let’s harness the energy of youth to transform our country forever. We have to make this transformation a reality and a constant aspiration to mainstream their welfare into policy and legislative frameworks.” He added.

He has further complained that despite their active participation in the 2021 general elections their place in the benefits of the outcome delivered remain obscure.

“Just recently, our youths dominated the political processes leading to the 2021 general elections but their place in the benefits of the outcome delivered is obscure.” He said .

“So when a day like this one comes, it should not be a mere annual ritual to pass comments of token appeasement. Those who hold power, in trust for all of us, must improve the welfare of the youths, and do so, with tangible evidence of commitment to the welfare of our young people.
To all our youths let’s transform our minds and develop mother Zambia.” He added .

UPND ALLIANCE CAUTIONS WESTERN COUNTRIES TO STOP INTERFERING WITH ZAMBIA’S INTERNAL AFFAIRS

0

THERE IS NO ROOM FOR GAY RIGHTS IN ZAMBIA AND AMERICA (WESTERN COUNTRIES) MUST STOP INTERFERING WITH OUR INTERNAL AFFAIRS!

Press Statement (12.03.2023)

The UPND-ALLIANCE COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS does not support gay rights or (LGBTQ) practices. On various fora, the Republican President, His Excellency, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, has consistently denounced the gay- Lesbian agenda, and the entire Council of Presidents in the Alliance, is in support of this position against these neo-cultural imperialist practices, of imposing their wickedness on Africa and Zambia in particular.

1. “Gay rights”, are not rights in Zambia , but an abuse of our Constitution and our laws. Articles (8-9) of the Republican Constitution binds all National Values ,to be anchored on Christian values in practice. This is an enforcement of the Declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation, as enshrined in our Preamble of our Republican Constitution. If anyone is window- shopping Zambia that is our worldview, as a nation.

2. Our Criminal Justice System, has prescribed laws in defense against morality in Cap. 87, Articles (155- 156), which explicitly criminalises acts of unnatural carnal knowledge in our society, as Sodomy. This is what our natural law and culture has agreed upon as Criminality and must be respected by all, especially, the Western Countries. All Diplomatic relations with Zambia, as a Sovereign Country and State , must respect our laws and internal security, and NOT compromise the same.

3. The Church Country -wide must be commended for standing up against Homosexuality in our Republic. The Church must remain resilient as the; Apostlic voice, Prophetic voice, and moral conscience of our nation. The Church must remain vigilant that Gates of Hell do not prevail against the nation, as a Watch-dog and intercessory role in building it as stated in ( Matthew 16:18-20, and Romans 1:26-32). God judges nations in scriptures, those who practice Homosexuality and those who tolerate it alike. The Church must not be silent at this hour. Prayer alone is not enough. We need to be proactive and vigilant to guard the morality of our nation.

4. All Civil Society Organisations and Political Parties funding and abetting Gay rights , must be identified and dealt with according to the full extent of the laws of the Republic. No sacred cows, must be left. Zambia cannot be sacrificed for few pieces of silver by anyone . No one is greater than the Constitution. All those in Government swear allegiance, to uphold the Republican Constitution.

5. The Office of the Vice President, under which the responsibility of religious and national values falls seems to have dropped their oversight role on morality and religious affairs . We urgently urge that clear sensitisation of national values must be an ongoing program countrywide, working with Church Mother Bodies . Zambia is at stake, and her national identity, by insidious well- funded groups.

6. Zambia as a Soveriegn state has the right to establish self- determination, without interference from anyone, not even Western Countries. Zambia does not interfere in internal Matters of other Countries. We Counsel the American Embassy to learn from their just Past Ambassador, over Matters of Homosexuality in Zambia which are an abomination in a Christian nation. All are advised accordingly.

YOUTH DAY CHI M’POSA MABWE (STONE THROWER)

YOUTH DAY CHI M’POSA MABWE (STONE THROWER)

By Nkonkomalimba M Kapumpe

Do you know why we celebrate Youth day in Zambia on 12 March? Its not because of your age or UN.

This is the day UNIP youths lead by Alexander Chikwanda fought running battles with the imperialist police in 1962 in Kitwe. They had nothing but sticks and stones, a great number of them were killed and many gravely injured that day.

The spirit of Mundia Sipalo, Omello Mumba, Justin Kangwa, Chandwe Musonda and many others too numerous to mention continues in Economic Freedom Fighters today. Without them sacrificing including their lives, we wouldn’t be here today.

The plan was hatched in Ndola to attack the Kaundas’ who were housed at Mr Mutemba’s residence in Chimwemwe opposite Mindolo Police Station on the Kitwe Chingola road. As they hatched the plan, one of the native (Zambian) cleaners earsdropped on the plan and alerted the youth after knocking off at 17 hours.

The plan was to be implemented in the early hours of the following morning. So at 18 hrs, the youth led by abena Alexander Bwalya Chikwanda (ABC) and others walked from Ndola to Kitwe and arrived around midnight were they alerted and evacuated the UNIP leadership of KK and Co from the Mutemba residence.

And according to plan, the colonial forces besieged the Chimwemwe house at 03 hrs and petrol bombed it and sprayed bullets to ensure not a soul occupying the place lived. Luckily, the house was unoccupied as everyone was already evacuated by the youth.
Come day break, KK and Co were to hold a public rally in Chimwemwe where they were to among other things, expose the colonial masters.

Sensing embarrassment, the colonial regime decided to invoke the infamous POA and unleashed the entire Kamfinsa Para Military Mobile Unit to contain and disrupt the Chimwemwe rally which was to be…. The mother of all rallies.

Determined to protect their leadership and allow for the public rally to take place, the youth went into town and caused serious havoc; they disrupted normal business and put stones, rocks and dust bins onto the roads.
This diverted the attention of police from going to Chimwemwe and instead they went into the town centre where they ran battles with the youth.

Unfortunately, all our youth only had stones as weapons while the colonial police opened live ammunition killing youths in their numbers.
They killed them, but still in their numbers they kept fighting and dying.

Meanwhile, at the Chimwemwe rally, KK announced that the rally was taking place at the sacrifice of young people who were being killed in town just so they could hold the rally. KK announced and promised at the rally that, should independence come, that day, March 12 will be remembered and commemorated as YOUTH DAY.

Hence at the UNIP Central Committee meeting held at Kwacha House in 1966 (Two years after independence) it was decreed that March 12 be a public holiday and r emembered as Youth Day.

Further, a statue was erected in the middle of Kitwe CBD known as the “Chi M’posa Mabwe” (stone thrower) that remains so to date depicting the day the Youth fought with nothing but stones against gun bullets.
Today we remember, thank and salute the gallant youth of 1962.

So I ask, how dare you shun such an important day, how dare you take to drinking, insulting and engaging in acts of violence on such an important day, what do you think you are?
They played their part and fought for political independence, it is time for you the youth of 2020’s to play your part too and fight for Economic freedom.

Erik ten Hag defends Casemiro after another Premier League red card

0

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has defended Casemiro after a Premier League red card against bottom club Southampton that leaves the midfielder facing a four-match ban.

Casemiro was dismissed after 34 minutes of the 0-0 draw for a tackle on Carlos Alcaraz, but Ten Hag has not ruled out an appeal.

The midfielder’s sending off followed a VAR review, with referee Anthony Taylor overturning his initial decision to show a yellow card for a tackle that hit the top of the ball first before going into Southampton forward Alcaraz’s leg.

As Casemiro was also dismissed against Crystal Palace last month, an additional game will be added to an automatic three-match ban, meaning he won’t be able to play a domestic match again until the trip to Nottingham Forest on 15 April.

“When you freeze anything it looks bad – but everyone who knows something about top football knows what is bad and what is fair,” said Ten Hag. “And Casemiro is a really fair player. Tough but fair.

“It shows, he had played over 500 games in big leagues and never been sent off. Now it has happened twice.”

Ten Hag complained about the lack of consistency in the use of VAR, noting the referee was not sent to the monitor to review controversial incidents in Saturday’s game between Leicester and Chelsea.

Despite having a man advantage for almost an hour and managing 17 shots, Southampton were unable to capitalise and remain bottom of the Premier League.

Even before Casemiro’s early exit, David de Gea needed to make a brilliant reaction save to turn away Theo Walcott’s close-range header.

De Gea then produced a one-handed save after the break when Walcott ran clear of the home defence, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka cleared off the line when Scott McTominay turned a Kyle Walker-Peters cross towards his own goal. In addition, James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick skimmed of the top of the bar and Walker-Peters also hit a post with an angled drive.

United had some dangerous moments themselves, with captain Bruno Fernandes’ goalbound effort tipped on to the inside of a post by Gavin Bazunu.

The result consolidated United’s top-four position, whilst Southampton are effectively three points from safety given their goal difference, with 12 games of the campaign remaining.

Southampton show improvement

Despite their position in the table, Southampton’s form is good.

They have now picked up seven points from four games since Nathan Jones was sacked on 12 February.

It represents their most productive run since August and Wednesday’s rearranged game with Brentford does offer the opportunity for Ruben Selles’ side to climb out of the relegation zone for the first time since the end of October.

Nevertheless, their goalscoring is a concern – in only one league match since August have they scored more than once. They had the chances to improve that statistic at Old Trafford but couldn’t make them count.

Casemiro’s ill discipline

Casemiro has been one of the key reasons behind United’s improvement this season.

But the positivity around the Brazilian is in danger of being undermined by his disciplinary record.

Sent off against Crystal Palace last month for grabbing Will Hughes round the neck following a mass confrontation, his latest red card was also triggered by the intervention of VAR.

Casemiro did play the top of the ball first but Taylor decided the tackle was dangerous.

Ten Hag said Casemiro was emotional in the dressing room afterwards.

“He is disappointed,” Ten Hag said.

Unless United manage a successful appeal, the four-match suspension would rule him out of next week’s FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham, plus the three Premier League games that follow.

‘It Still hurts’, Says Chris Rock One Year After Will Smith’s Oscar Slap

0

Chris Rock admits the Oscar stage slap incident with Hollywood actor Will Smith still bothers him.

Smith slapped Rock in March 2022 for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, while presenting an award.

He made a witty remark about Pinkett’s shaved head, which turned out to be the result of a hair loss condition.

At a live Netflix comedy show, Rock discussed the contentious 2022 Academy Awards incident in full.

“They say, ‘words hurt’. Anybody that says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” the comedian said.

“I’m going to try to do the show without offending anyone because you never know who might get triggered.”

On those who asked him if the slap hurt, Rocks referred to a 1991 single by Will Smith, commenting: “It still hurts!”

He added: “I got Summertime ringing in my ears. I took that hit like (Manny) Pacquiao.”

In a nod to the comedy show titled ‘Chris Rock: Selective Outrage’, the comedian said he believes Smith practices “selective outrage” and that the slap had more to do with the couple’s relationship struggles than his Oscar joke.

The comedian said: “We’ve all been cheated on, everybody here has been cheated on, none of us have ever been interviewed by the person that cheated on us on television. She hurt him way more than he hurt me.”

Rock ended the show by saying he didn’t fight the actor back because his parents raised him well.

“I was raised. And you know what my parents taught me? Don’t fight in front of white people,” the comedian said.

Smith received a 10-year ban from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in 2022.

Members of Rock’s family publicly chastised Smith as a result of the incident.

Smith, on the other hand, has apologized to Rock multiple times for slapping him at the 2022 Oscars.

“There is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave at that moment,” the actor said on an occasion.

“I am deeply remorseful and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself.”

KASHALA DEMANDS OVER K2M FROM FAZ

KASHALA DEMANDS OVER K2M FROM FAZ

By Walusungu Lundu

FORMER FAZ general secretary Adrian Kashala has demanded over K2 million from the association for what he termed as termination of his contract.

In a letter to Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga dated March 2, Kashala argues that he was not given an opportunity to be heard.

He is also demanding an official letter terminating his contract with FAZ.

‘’The right to be heard is an essential component of the rules of natural justice, this right is comprehensively enshrined in various pieces of legislation, the Supreme Court of Zambia has in several cases accentuated the importance of the rule. It is trite law that at all times the rules of natural justice must [be] adhered to and complied with,’’ he said. ‘’In this case you failed and or refused to accord me with the opportunity to state my case. In view of the above, it is my contention that a full payment of the remaining Contract term be paid including all the amounts owed under the contract or other entitlements. In addition, I humbly request that a formal letter of termination of my contract be written for my record. Accordingly, the total amount due for the contract period of three (3) years from 1st September 2022 to 31st August 2025 is K2,054,,605.00 (Net). I submit for your further action.’’

Kashala also explained how he was retired from the Zambia Police Service by the Edgar Lungu-led PF administration for standing with the Kamanga executive.

Lungu’s PF fought Kamanga and his executive from 2016 until they lost power in the 2021 general election.

Kashala further explained his recent exit from Football House at Kamanga’s instruction.

‘’…As you may be aware that I was erroneously retired from the Police Service while on secondment on 14th February 2020, for standing firm in protecting the FAZ constitution and Presidency, am happy to inform you that I was reinstated in Zambia Police Service on 10th November 2022. Following my reinstatement, several options were arrived at subject to be discussed with the Inspector General of Police who from the onset was agreeable to allow me to continue working until the expiry of my current contract which falls on 31st August 2025. However, the meeting with the Inspector General of Police did not take place owing to his non-availability for almost the entire January 2023,’’ explained Kashala. ‘’On 23rd of February 2023 Mr. President, you in your capacity as the Football Association of Zambia President did terminate my contract even before the meeting was help[d] where the options were to be discussed. You further directed me to hand over to Mr. Iva Lengwe whom I had proposed together with Mr. Owens Buntele and I will be concluding my hand over in a couple of weeks. To support your verbal directive to hand over to Mr. Lengwe, you further directed our Public Relations Officer to issue a statement informing the Public of my immediate departure from the Football Association of Zambia as General Secretary. To that effect a statement was released… The decision was in contravention with clause 7.1 and 7.2 of my Contract of employment and made without notification or payment in lieu of notice as mandated under Section 53 of the Employment Code Act No. 3 of 2019 which promulgates that such an act is illegal in the eyes of the law. Further, the decision was also not in line with clause 8.1 and 8.2 of my contract of employment (copy attached).’’

Woman died of malnutrition after carrying an unborn baby for nine years

0

An unborn foetus was discovered trapped in the abdomen of a 50-year-old woman who passed away from acute starvation.

The Congolese refugee woman complained of stomach pain, indigestion, and a gurgling sound after meals to doctors in New York.

Further scans revealed she had a “stone baby,” a calcified foetus that was trapped in her intestines and causing significant intestinal obstruction and consequent malnutrition.

The foetus was attributed to a miscarriage she had suffered nine years earlier, which would have been the woman’s ninth child.

However, rather than seeking treatment the woman instead blamed her ailments on witchcraft, claiming to have had a ‘spell’ cast on her by a local witch before she came to the US.

She died from her condition 14 months after arriving in the United States.

The extremely rare phenomenon, known as a lithopedion, has only been recorded 290 times throughout history, with the first dating back to France in 1582.

It occurs when a foetus begins to develop in the abdomen rather than the womb, causing it to calcify and ‘turn to stone’ once the pregnancy becomes unviable, compressing major organs and restricting the mother’s nutrient absorption.

For this woman, the ‘stone baby’ kept compressing her intestine, causing major blockages which meant her body was no longer able to absorb vital nutrients- leading to starvation.

Dr Waseem Sous, an internal medicine expert at SUNY Upstate Medical University who reported the case, said the patient ‘declined intervention due to fear of surgery and elected for symptom monitoring.’

‘Unfortunately, she passed away due to severe malnutrition in the context of recurrent bowel obstruction due to the lithopedion and continued fear of seeking medical care.’

The case study was revealed in a medical report in the journal BMC Women’s Health this week.

The mother’s early life had seen her uprooted twice, moving from Congo to Burundi and then Tanzania because of conflicts.

In Tanzania, she settled down and had eight children, delivered naturally. Three died shortly after childbirth.

She visited a doctor’s clinic during her ninth pregnancy after noticing that her baby was no longer moving, where medics told her the baby had no heartbeat and recommended that she try to pass it naturally at home.

If this did not work, they said, she should return in two weeks.

The woman followed the instructions, but when she returned to the clinic she was accosted by people outside accusing her of ‘evil work’ and ‘killing the baby’, which convinced her not to seek any medical help.

She then spent nine years carrying the dead foetus inside her, and had no contact with medics until receiving a health check six months before being resettled to the United States.

Doctors offered her surgery to remove the mass, but she refused, and said the condition was the result of a curse someone placed on her in Tanzania.

She told doctors: ‘I will let you know when I am ready; I am not scared of death.’

Medics did eventually convince her to take antibiotics to help with her stomach complaints and pills to lower her blood pressure, but the woman kept refusing surgery.

During another appointment, she simply said: ‘I just do not have it in my heart to do.’

The woman passed away from severe malnutrition a short time later.

How Pope Francis transformed the world in a decade

0

Easter Sunday and there are no people inside St. Peter’s Basilica.

The guy with the most important position in the Catholic Church approaches a straightforward glass platform and begins speaking to no one on the most significant day of the Catholic calendar in the most significant location in the Catholic world.

Because the problem we face is a common one, adds Pope Francis, “now is not the moment for self-centredness.”

As he speaks, he occasionally glances up from his pulpit and looks around, as if he is addressing a congregation. But he isn’t – not physically, at least.

The pontiff’s address on April 12 2020, in the early weeks of the pandemic, provided one of the most indelible and extraordinary images so far in his papacy.

Videos of him speaking to the vast, deserted space were shown around the world, meaning his words probably reached more people than they otherwise would have done.

But ahead of the 10th anniversary of Francis’s appointment to the role on Monday, it is tempting to ask how well his 2020 Easter address works as a metaphor for his papacy.

Has the leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics – criticised by some for moving away from the conservative stance of his two predecessors, and by others for not going further in the opposite direction – actually made an impact during his time in the office?

Or has he just been speaking to an empty basilica?

Dr Gregory Ryan from the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University said Francis wields an almost unique form of power just by virtue of his position.

‘When the pope speaks, by and large people listen, even if it’s not what they want to hear,’ he said.

‘There’s never been a shortage of people listening and criticising.

‘But in a way that’s not true of any other religious leader – with the possible exception of the Dalai Lama – he’s got a global audience and there’s a certain degree of moral authority.’

Despite that, the ways in which the world reacts to what this pope says marks him apart from those who came immediately before him.

The backlash to Francis is unlike anything seen before in modern times – not necessarily for its ferocity, said Dr Ryan, but for its source.

He said: ‘Several of the voices who are now vociferously exercising their right to criticise the pope are the same people who, in a previous generation, were trying to emphasise that the role of Catholic clergy and Catholic bishops was to be in line and not to dissent from papal teaching.

‘That’s one of the things that’s turned around.

‘There was criticism of Benedict and John Paul II, but it tended to come from theologians, academics and activists.

‘What’s unique here is that some of it is coming from the bishops as well.’

That partially stems from his remarks on some of the most contentious topics in the church, and particularly LGBTQ+ issues.

Francis made his most famous comment on that subject a little more than four months after his election when, on a flight back from Rio de Janeiro, a journalist asked him about gay priests.

‘If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will,’ the pope asked, ‘who am I to judge?’

It was the first time a pontiff had ever used the word ‘gay’ in reference to sexuality.

Since then, he has made a number of statements that appear to contradict Vatican teachings which say ‘homosexual acts’ are ‘acts of grave depravity’.

In 2020, he voiced support for civil unions for same-sex couples, and in January he described laws criminalising homosexuality as ‘unjust’.

But despite his open calls for understanding and acceptance of people in the LGBTQ+ community, Francis hasn’t attempted to make any bold doctrinal changes – an approach typical of his papacy, according to Dr Ryan.

He said: ‘The two straightforward positions you might expect someone to take would be to simply reinforce church teaching, or to overturn that and say something new, something definitive and concrete.

‘What Francis has done is he’s changed the language that’s being used, and seen the question in a different way.

‘He takes an indirect approach, which I think has a potentially more transformative power on the church.’

According to Dr Ryan, the pope prefers to use the power of his position to set a process in motion, ‘aware it will take time to come to fruition’. As the saying goes, the church thinks in centuries.

That has led to some organisations expressing frustration that the church continues to use such offensive language to describe same-sex relationships, while still seeing positives.

At an event for LGBT Catholics in 2017, the gay priest Bryan Massingale paraphrased Martin Luther King Jr. to make the point, saying: ‘We ain’t where we wanna be, but we ain’t where we used to be.’

The same approach applies to Francis’s headline-grabbing attitude to environmentalism – though he’s made more of an effort to deliberately place the planet at the centre of the church’s attention.

In June 2015, the pontiff published Laudato Si’, an encyclical – meaning a letter essentially addressed to the entire Roman Catholic church – giving his thoughts on humanity’s attitude towards the Earth.

Scathingly, he describes the planet as being ‘among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor’, and condemns ‘our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her’.

Landing less than a month before the start of the negotiations that would eventually lead to the Paris Climate Agreement, it was praised by leaders including Barack Obama and Francoise Hollande for presenting a strong moral argument for fighting the climate crisis.

And in a pre-Greta Thunberg age, the editor of the academic journal Science declared Francis ‘our most visible champion for mitigating climate change’.

However, within his own church, reaction was more mixed.

A 2021 study that analysed 12,077 columns written by Catholic bishops between 2014 and 2019 found they were, as a group, ‘generally silent about climate change’ – and when they did discuss it, they often distanced themselves from teachings like Laudato Si’.

Some of this rejection can be blamed on ideological opposition from conservatives, but Dr Ryan said it’s also a reaction to a change in inertia and a ‘cultural shift’.

‘His style is very much, in a sense, trying to get the church to deepen its understanding of these issues and then for the church to change,’ he said.

‘It’s good psychology, we do it with our children all the time.

‘It’s trying to get them to think they’re wanting to do something rather than they’re just doing it because they’re told to – you try to make it seem like it’s their idea.’

A decade ago, as people around the world marvelled at the new head of the Vatican and his distaste for the more extravagant elements of his role, commentators wondered how the Catholic church would cope with such radical change.

But to Dr Ryan, the most dramatic thing Francis has done is take the drama out of the papacy, recasting it as just one part of the church which is constantly in conversation with the other parts.

He said: ‘I think he is trying to initiate a cultural change, and cultural changes are much more difficult to undo.

‘So there is a risk that without Francis constantly initiating things, the momentum will run out and we’ll go back to a more top-down approach.

‘But the other possibility is that precisely by doing all this work, it decentres it and puts it out of a single point of control, into the people, and you can’t get it back.’

Kenyan man with 8 wives, 7 concubines and 107 children

0

He says he is too smart for one wife. And so, David Zakayo Kalukhana, a man from Teresia Village on the edge of Kakamega County in Kenya, has eight wives and seven concubines with whom he has sired 107 children.

The 63-year-old, whose village lies along the expansive Nandi escarpment in Kakamega North sub-county, first got married in 1987 but felt he needed more.

“A head like mine cannot be managed by one woman. It is like a big sack of maize which has to be divided into smaller parts for ease of movement. I need many wives so that they can manage the amount of brains and ideas in my head. I am too smart for one wife,” Mr Kalukhana told the Sunday Nation.

Going by the local standards, Mr Kalukhana is not a wealthy man. He said he owns a half-acre parcel of land on which he grows some maize to feed his family. He also farms sugarcane.

To provide for his large family, Mr Kalukhana does menial jobs, including landscaping activities.

In his compound are three semi-permanent houses with iron sheet roofs and mud walls.

Despite the struggle he goes through to fend for his kin, Mr Kalukhana stands tall, likening himself to the biblical King Solomon who had 700 wives and 300 concubines.

“I have wives in different places, including in the neighbouring Nandi County,” said Mr Kalukhana.

Every month, Mr Kalukhana has to buy five bags of maize, which is distributed to his wives to ensure the children do not sleep hungry.

“When I’m not farming, I go out to do menial work, including constructing stone fences around people’s homes. The work is well-paying and it has helped me make some money to keep my family going. They will never sleep hungry as long as I’m alive,” said Mr Kalukhana.

The polygamist says nothing stops him from marrying more young wives to be part of his family.

But there are unmissable signs of a man living in dire straits even as he stirs excitement in his neighbourhood. He wore plastic shoes and his wives were in rubber sandals as they marched in a line from the first wife’s house, with some carrying young babies in their arms.

Chief’s baraza

One could easily mistake the gathering for a community meeting or a chief’s baraza. The wives and children were mingling freely.

During breakfast, the family convenes in the open compound as the wives cook. As the family takes breakfast, they chat and joke with each other.

“When I married my first wife Jesca Asembo in 1987, I felt like she was not up to the task. I have added more but I still have the urge to add more,” said Mr Kalukhana.

His firstborn daughter, named Naliaka Kalukhana, is married and living away from the family.

“All my children of school going age attend school. I toil daily to raise money to ensure they are in school to get an education for their future,” said Mr Kalukhana.

But how is it possible to have numerous wives and have harmony? Mr Kaluhana says it is his wisdom and his sharp brains that have helped him manage the big family.

I don’t believe in religion. I live my life through my own intervention because I am a genius,” he said

The wives, who are from different age groups, cook together, eat together and share their food. They share household chores and treat their husband like a king. They posed for photos with him and even joyously fed each other as they giggled and taunted each other.

Ms Asembo said she has never felt jealous of the other wives.

“I love my husband and that is all that matters. Even if he brings in additional wives, I will not be bothered because I understand him. He is a responsible man and whatever he does is always right because he takes his time to decide on what to do,” said Ms Asembo.

Ms Dorine Kalukhana, the seventh wife, said she used to be jealous when she was newly married but later got used to it.

“Today, there is no jealousy. We all live in harmony and no woman feels jealous of the other. Our man treats us equally,” she said.

Ms Ashley Nechesa, another wife, said their husband is responsible and has always done his best to make his wives and children happy. Praising his bedroom skills, she said he is also responsible.

“Nimezaa naye watoto. Anawatunza, anawapeleka shuleni (We have sired children and he takes good care of everyone and educates them),” said Ms Nechesa.

The South African music industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Amapiano artist, Costa Titch. The 27-year-old musician reportedly collapsed and died on stage during a performance at Ultra South Africa on Saturday evening at the Expo Centre in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, showing the singer falling down twice before he eventually died.
Although there are no confirmed details surrounding the cause of death, unconfirmed reports on Twitter suggest that Costa Titch had a seizure while performing before falling down and passing away.

Entertainment reporter Kgopolo Phil Mphela was among the first to report on the artist’s untimely demise but did not provide any additional information about the cause of death.

Fans who had attended his performance also shared videos on social media showing the singer collapsing on stage before he was eventually pronounced dead.

Watch the video below;

The tragic incident comes just a few weeks after the death of another South African musician, AKA, who was gunned down on his way to his birthday gig in Durban.

Costa Titch and AKA were close friends and had worked on a hit song titled “Nkalakatha” which also featured the late Ricky Rick. The deaths of the three artists in such a short space of time have left many fans and industry players devastated.

Costa Titch, whose real name is Costa Tsobanoglou, was born in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, and had managed to keep his private life away from the public eye. His team and family have not yet released a statement regarding the cause of his death, and the music industry and fans continue to mourn his passing.

The South African music industry has lost some of its brightest and most talented artists in recent years, with the deaths of stars like DJ Dimplez, DJ Sumbody and Mampintsha among many others.

Shielding our leaders from reality on the ground; the case of President Chiluba

0

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

Today, the president is scheduled to travel to the Copperbelt province on a 5 day working visit. He is expected to commission and inspect some projects, meet the clergy and our traditional leaders and of course, have tete-a-tete with party members. This is a brilliant initiative indeed!

But why would a president want to meet party members in the first place? This is the only way the president can gather first hand information from people on the ground…….listen to their complaints, get to know whatever issues they may be grappling with.

You see, most people that vie for such positions usually have grand aspirations for their citizens unless of course they found themselves in such positions by accident……ifyabu pyani! However, there are always individuals that tend to be stumbling blocks…..and these are non other than senior government or party officials.

We’ll give a typical example.

Mid 1990s, President Chiluba travelled to Kitwe to commission the newly constructed Wesley Nyirenda Basic School with the support from the World Bank. On their way from South Downs Airstrip in Kalulushi, the presidential motorcade used a road that had recently been worked on in readiness for the presidential visit.

As the procession wound its way back via the same route once the programme was over, Chiluba instructed his driver to make a detour. As one would imagine, the security detail and government entourage was gripped with alarm! Why would the president want to use Chinyunyu Road? What was he thinking?

When the entourage finally caught up with him, in his usual wit he commended the Town Clerk for the great job fixing the road in question. You should have seen their looks…..they all had big eggs on their faces! The road was scarred with not potholes, but craters!

A week later, a contractor promptly mobilized on site to work on the deplorable road. It would be important to emphasize that the president was once a labour leader; his union had property in the area and was obviously privy to the state of the road.

What are we getting at?

As President Hichilema comes to Kitwe, he must not allow his security detail or protocol officers to shield him away from the truth. He must have one on ones with ordinary folks so as to get a better understanding of the needs of our people.

Governance not about funding friends that funded you during campaigns – Sichinga

Governance not about funding friends that funded you during campaigns – Sichinga

By Fanny Kalonda

FORMER commerce minister Bob Sichinga says there is need to examine the Ndola-Lusaka dual carriageway deal in detail as it will be a problem for the next government.

He said governance is not about favouring friends.

“This is for government to show us the figures. Show us the figures because there are many of us, there are many accountants in the country, there are many road engineers in this country, we can work out. This is not rocket science. The question that is arising is the government has not justified this kind of expenditure,” Sichinga said. “Why do you want to make it 25 years? It is going to create problems for the next government. Whether this government serves five years or 10 years, the case might be, this will still be problem because this will be existing. It will be 25 years. Just like now the current government has found challenges because of the agreements that were made in the past. This will still be a problem for them. So what I am saying is that if we restructure this funding, it is quite possible that coupling what the institution is earning plus what is being obtained from the others, it could be covered. They may even proceed despite what we are saying. They may proceed but this is going to get people into trouble, I can tell you this. Because government does not operate like that, government is about laws and regulations. That’s what it’s about. It’s not about favouring friends. It’s not about funding friends that funded you during campaigns. It’s not about that. Government is about making sure that you are as frugal as possible. We should not be wasteful.”

He said the contract needs to be examined stressing that “don’t go into a deal blindfolded”.

“It says, they want to recover this amount in 25 years. Number two, what is the profit, do you know it? Now if you are going to do a deal, you are running Macro Ocean, is the friend of the President, therefore, he has been favoured…don’t go into a deal blindfolded. You need to know. Others have said ‘Mr such and such’… We need to examine this in detail, we have been on that road before,” Sichinga said when he featured on KBN TV. “You cannot turnaround after these years and say RDA (Road Development Agency) does not have capacity. You cannot tell me that the National Road Fund Agency does not have capacity, you cannot tell me that. There are other expensive items that are more expensive that this road that have been handled by government agencies that have been set up. Most of the parastatals are set up as special purpose vehicles to deal with this. So that cannot be used as an argument. This is what has led to the cases that you are seeing at ACC, okay.”

He argued that Zambian institutions can do the Lusaka-Ndola road works.

He said many roads have been constructed “in this country, pipelines have been build, rail lines have been built, it is a matter of getting these institutions to do their work”. “You already have institutions in place that can undertake this work. We have lived to see what has happened in the previous regime and also the issue of how these contracts are being given out. And the question is that if government comes out, and says to us, there is not enough money, one would expect that the government would be looking at very frugal ways which to save costs,” Sichinga said. “You can’t afford to have many players having their hand into this deal because all it will do, it will send money away from the construction to others. These failures in the past and several other cases we can quote have caused people to start questioning.”

Sichinga said people are expectant that the road that is going to be constructed would not suffer the same shortfalls as in the past.

“And if we finance this from the resources of road fund, it would take barely seven to 10 years. Why are you taking 25 years for somebody to eat? So I think drawing from the challenges that we have had in the past, and some of which are in courts right now, I think people are saying wait a minute let’s be wary about this. Let’s examine what our government is doing,” Sichinga said. “The expectation at the moment is that the road that is going to be constructed will not suffer the same shortfalls and failures that we have seen happening at the moment. This Macro Ocean Investment Consortium, I am not aware of any special construction technologies they have that they are going to bring to the table because it has not been indicated. How much is it going to cost, what is the cost that Macro Ocean Investment Consortium is going to charge for this?”

Sichinga said there is need to explain the role of Macro Ocean Investment in the deal.

“However, because we have got NAPSA, Workers Compensation which are parastatals, you could say it is the public portion and we have got the private side which would be Stanbic and of course it is a partnership when you do that. If we are not dissecting the problem to a great detail, then you can call it a PPP. The funding is being providing by public institutions, publicly owned institutions, otherwise government owned institutions and I think we need to take account of the fact that the World Bank, the IMF, are in negotiation with our government and that you don’t want to tie down government financing and therefore government should not commit anymore financing,” said Sichinga. “Secondly, it is the fact that you don’t want to borrow in foreign currency because that means that you have to service it in foreign currency. Yes it is in some way a PPP, not in the way it is defined in the law. But let’s call it that…Drawing from what the government itself has said, you are talking about [US $] 577 [million]. The question I think that arises is that, what is governments’ role? Number 2, government has indicated that there will be a company called Macro Ocean Investment Consortium, what is the role of this institution? Why is this thing a 25-year lease if you want to call it that? If funding is going to be provided by public institutions, why don’t they just manage it themselves? That is what is being raised.”

Lawyers Keith Mukata And Eddie Mwitwa Were Once ZNS Employees, It’s Not The First Time The Service Is Engaging Skilled Civilians – Zambia National Service

“ZNS UNIQUELY PLACED TO EMPLOY SKILLED CIVILIANS TO DELIVER MANDATE”

The Zambia National Service says it is uniquely placed in the defence force to employ civilians in an effort to deliver on its mandate.

A statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Department reveals it’s common practice for the service to use its discretion to employ skilled civilians to assist in executing huge national tasks placed on its shoulders.

And this is done by remunerating the skilled civilians like officers, the Service has stated.

Below is the full statement:

The Zambia National Service (ZNS) acknowledges and notes the recent Social Media publication concerning its operations.

There is no doubt that every Zambian has an inescapable duty to the nation and posterity to check any possible excesses or misconduct by any custodian of public office.

The prayer and request of the Service is that watchdog individuals and institutions, in executing this national obligation, should, however, endeavour to balance their stories by getting views from the other side before proceeding to publish. For journalists, this is a duty upon which ethical journalism is founded.

News writers would save themselves from possible and unnecessary litigation or embarrassment if only they could at least do a bit of fact check before rushing to post their articles.

It must be appreciated that ZNS is uniquely placed – albeit being part of the Zambia Defense Force – requiring the institution to, time and again, engage highly skilled and professional individuals to assist in the effective execution of that distinct developmental national mandate.
And in order to attract the kind of skill set necessary for the huge national tasks placed on its shoulders, ZNS has from time to time used discretion and precedence to attract the most sought-after professional competences and commensurately or proportionately paying them regardless of them being civilians.

It must therefore be appreciated that it is based on this leeway and precedence that ZNS engaged the services of the civilians cited by some Social Media News blog.

It must be further stated that the Service has lately established a Trade and Services Branch as well as re-established the Builders’ Brigade. This noble move aimed at creating job opportunities for Zambians and enhancing ZNS’ contribution to national development, has given rise to the need for requisitely or highly qualified human resource. ZNS passionately shares the views of the Republican President and Commander in Chief that “Building a broken country requires a lot of ingenuity, work, work, and more hard work”.
Arising from this development, the Service was compelled to engage Research Specialists, Business Administrators (Managers), Architects, Quantity Surveyors, Civil, Water and Electrical engineers as well as Medical Doctors as civilians, to mention but a few.
Considering that military training programmes are costly and require meticulous planning and therefore not regularly conducted, it has become a well-established pratice that the Defense Force, and in particular ZNS, meets professional strength requirements or deficit by engaging civilian employees on conditions of Officers. All these should be Degree Holders or above in the core fields of the Service and may or may not be eligible for military training.

This can be traced to as far back as the 1980s. For instance, late Greg Lungu, an accomplished actor, was engaged as a civilian member of staff with a salary scale of a Lieutenant.
By the way, this precedence was not just commonplace during the regime of the immediate past government. Evidence will show that way before 2011, to be specific in October, 1992, the current Chief Executive Officer for Dairy Association of Zambia, Mr Jeremiah Kasaro, alongside the current Deputy ZNS Commander, Major General Reuben Mwewa, who were classmates at the University of Zambia and graduated as young Agronomists, were engaged as civilians at the salary scale of Lieutenants.
Others include Brigadier General Maxwell Zulu retired (Vet Doctor) and Agronomists Brigadier General Patrick Kalesu and Colonel Elvis Lengamali.

In succeeding years, especially between 2003 and 2005, the Service also had former Deputy Minister and Lawyer Keith Mukata and former Law Association of Zambia president Eddie Mwitwa engaged as civilians at the salary scale of lieutenants, with Counsel Mwitwa being sponsored and offered leave to complete his ZIALE studies on similar lines to what the Service is being accused of illegally doing in the case of Ms Gladys Mwanakampwe. It should also be made clear that Ms Mwanakampwe was employed for the value she promises to bring to the Service and not because of her perceived ties to Mr Milner Mwanakampwe and that being offered leave to complete her studies is nothing irregular as demonstrated in the case of the learned Counsel Mwitwa.

For ease of reference, please find below a list of the other Officers who have served the nation as civilians but offered conditions of officers as in the case of the reported Maina Soko Medical Centre Doctors drawing the salary of captains:

  1. Brig Gen Ernest Chisoko (Medical Doctor) – 2004
  2. Captain Henry Kupalelwa (Lawyer)
  3. Lt col Stanslous Shabbuwa (Medical Doctor) – 2012
  4. Lt col Christine Mutelo (Medical Doctor) – 2012
  5. Lt col Makamo Mazuba (Medical Doctor) – 2012
  6. Lt col Ruth Phiri (Medical Doctor) – 2012
  7. Captain Paul Chilwesa (Medical Doctor) – 2012
  8. Lt col Dominic Kampolo (Medical Doctor) – 2015
Please note that the trend includes the Seventeen (17) Medical Doctors commissioned in December, 2021; currently deployed in various medical facilities countrywide.

It should be reiterated that ZNS abhors corruption and its relentless fight is currently and increasingly being embedded in the DNA of the Establishment. The manner the Service recently handled the President’s directive to clamp down the illegal harvest and export of Mukula and how it was speedily executed was comparably more professionally undertaken than before. It should therefore not be glossed over that through that, ZNS has adopted a working mantra informed by Proverbs 22:1 which assets that a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches; and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

It is therefore unfortunate that the Honourable Minister of Information and Media, Ms Chushi Kasanda, has been needlessly drawn into the issue by linking her to Ruth Jangulo, the newly engaged Research Specialist. It must be put on record that there is no blood connection between the Honourable Minister and the young Researcher and that similarity in name is purely coincidental.
It must further be pointed out that the propensity by bloggers to publish unverified or unsubstantiated information about ZNS is regrettable. The blatant falsehoods contained in the Kansenseli Gold Mine report is yet another futile attempt by detractors to make outlandish claims about ZNS in order to derail the Service from delivering on its core mandate.

The Service will therefore remain resolute and not allow those who may wish to champion a crusade of peddling falsehoods to detract it from realizing most of its ambitious and highly beneficial developmental programmes.

Suffice to say that this is the last time the Service is responding to unresearched write-ups via a written response. Going forward, the Service reserves the right to have recourse to legal redress in an event that unwarranted and unrestrained disparaging, libelous and defamatory reports on any of its members of staff continue.

It must be known that ZNS is determined to remain resolute in towing the line of the Republican President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, of promoting Zero Tolerance to corruption and an appeal is therefore made to all well-meaning Zambians to just seek ways of forging partnerships with or rendering support to the Service in this noble fight.

Meanwhile, the Institution stands ready to collaborate with watchdog institutions in helping the system call out and, where necessary, weed out any corrupt elements within the rank and file. Doors shall remain open to journalists and other progressive citizens for possible engagement.

On the other hand, ZNS would like to assure all the young Zambians who applied for recruitment that the process is above board and that the Service will not permit anyone to by-pass or circumvent the process.
Assurance is further given that those who will not make the final list should not despair as more job opportunities will come their way as the economy has started showing encouraging signs of recovery and growth.

Woman jailed after forcing a man to have sex with her while he was asleep

0

A woman from Lancashire, England, was jailed on Friday, March 10, for four years after she admitted forcing a man to have sex with her while he was asleep.

Tanya Lord, 41, who is a lesbian, had already pleaded guilty to the sex attack at her home in Co Armagh at an earlier hearing at Craigavon Crown Court.

She was told by the judge there “seems to be no distinction to be drawn between this and the rape of a female.”

Outlining how the victim has been left mentally scarred and suspicious of people by his ordeal, the judge said “there’s a repeated myth that males are less susceptible” to the consequences of sex attacks.

He revealed the victim has received counselling, is still prescribed medication for his mental health, has been left untrusting of people and “feels alone” unless he’s with his kids.

In an impact statement, the victim told the court: “I would not wish this on anyone,” adding that “encourage anyone who has been abused to come forward.”

Judge Lynch said if the myth about male victims “needs to be disabused, it can be disabused now by the contents of the victim impact statement I have just read out” and warning that “there’s no distinction between male and female rape – the fact that a male is the victim doesn’t make it any less serious than the rape of a female victim”.

Lord admitted causing a man “to engage in sexual activity with you involving penetration of your vagina with his penis and that he did not consent to the sexual activity, and you did not reasonably believe that he so consented”.

The court heard how Lord forced the victim to have sex when they shared a bed at her home.

Prosecutor Joseph Murphy said the man had been drinking all day and met up Lord after she finished work on June 23, 2020.

They went back to her house, had a few more drinks and some food and then went to bed with both wearing shorts.

The victim believed that no sexual intercourse would take place because he understood that Lord was a lesbian.

The prosecutor said however that in the early hours of the morning, the victim woke and “felt a pain across his chest”.

He regained his senses and realised that his boxer shorts had been pulled down to his knees, his penis was inside Lord and she was “straddling him, bouncing up and down”.

The victim pushed her off and she pretended to be asleep.

The victim got up and went downstairs “to process what had happened”.

He pretended to be asleep in the sofa when Lord brought his clothes down but when she left the room, he got dressed and left the property.

He then spoke to his mother and partner before reporting the incident to police.

He was taken to a rape enquiry centre where he had to endure an intimate examination, have swabs taken from his private parts and be interviewed on video by specialist detectives.

It was those swabs, the court heard, that helped form an “overwhelming case” against Lord because while she claimed there had been no sexual contact whatsoever, her full DNA profile was found on the victim’s penis.

When she was questioned, Lord “could provide no explanation” why her DNA had been found on intimate swabs and more than two years after the incident, with repeated delays and adjournments and an aborted trial, she finally confessed her guilt at the eleventh hour.

The prosecutor argued the fact that the victim asleep when he was attacked was an aggravating feature of the case.

Mr Murphy told the court that he could find no similar such case in the UK.

“Factually this case involved a woman having sex with a man without his consent and there should be parity between male victims of sexual crime and female victims,” he said, submitting that to do otherwise would affirm the “myth that men are less affected by sexual assault than women.”

Defence lawyer Michael Ward said Lord, who suffers from a personality disorder and has poor mental health, “has expressed remorse for her offending and some victim awareness”.

“She understands the position she had put herself in and she expresses, through me today, her remorse and her apologies to the victim for the unfortunate and regrettable incident,” said the barrister.

In addition to the four-year sentence, Lord was ordered to sign the police sex offenders register for the rest of her life.

Court orders woman’s ex-husband to pay her $215K for 25years of housework during marriage

0

A court has ruled that a 48-year-old woman in Spain will be paid Є204,000 (about $215,000) from her ex-husband as the compensation for doing unpaid housework during their marriage.

Ivana Moral will receive a monthly pension of €500 (about $528) from her ex-husband, whom she asked for a divorce from in 2020, according to iNews and Spanish language newspaper El Pais.

The outlets reported the total amount for the pension was decided by a Málaga judge who based it on the minimum monthly professional wage for the 25 years the pair were married.

Her ex-husband, who was not named in the court ruling, has been ordered to pay €400 (£356) and €600 (£533) to their two daughters, who are now 20 and 14, according to iNews. He is expected to appeal.

Moral said she “exclusively” handled the couple’s housework during their marriage, reported EuroNews

She also argued that during that time, she could not pursue her own career because of “her exclusive dedication to the home and family,” while her ex-husband “accumulated and exponentially increased his assets,” the outlet reports.

Conversely, Moral’s ex built a flourishing gym business that meant he could afford lavish purchases, iNews reported.

Moral claimed her ex also refused to pay for one of their daughter’s studies when she turned 16, according to the outlet.

“Clearly this was a case of abuse to be completely excluded financially (by my ex-husband) with nothing left after my marriage ended, so me and my daughters were left with nothing after all these years of putting all my time, energy and love in the family,” Moral told the outlet.

“I was supporting my husband in his work and in the family as a mother and a father,” she added. “I was never allowed access to his financial affairs; everything was in his name.”

“This ruling represents the labour of all the women in the shadows and who, without a doubt, constitute a fundamental support in personal, marital, and familiar terms during years and years so that the ex-husband could develop his professional career and a rise in wealth which at the moment of separation could not share,” Moral’s attorney, Marta Fuentes, told iNews.

“So he could get on in his career, she stayed at home to look after the children, and they never contacted anyone to help her,” she continued. “She was his shadow, working behind [him] so he could rise professionally and become someone.”

Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to end years of hostilities in deal mediated by China

0

Saudi Arabia and Iran announced on Friday, March 10 that they have agreed to reestablish diplomatic ties after seven years of hostility- a deal between the regional arch-rivals that could have wide-ranging implications for the Middle East.

In a joint statement Riyadh and Tehran said they plan to reopen their embassies within two months in an agreement mediated by China.

They also plan to re-implement a security pact signed 22 years ago under which both parties agreed to cooperate on terrorism, drug-smuggling and money-laundering, as well as reviving a trade and technology deal from 1998.

Friday’s announcement is also a diplomatic victory for China in the middle east region that has long been considered part of the US’ domain of influence. It comes as the Biden administration tries to create its own win in the Middle East brokering a peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Talks had been ongoing since March 6 in Beijing between Iranian national security chief Ali Shamkhani, Saudi national security council adviser Mosaed Bin Mohammad Al-Aiban and China’s top diplomat Wang Yi, according to Iranian state media.

Video of the signing ceremony aired by Iranian media showed officials seated around tables on opposite sides with the Saudi Arabian, Iranian and Chinese flags around them.

Archrivals Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to end years of hostilities in deal mediated by China
“We will continue to play a constructive role in properly handling hotspot issues in today’s world in accordance with the wishes of all countries and demonstrate our responsibility as a major country,” Wang said, adding that Chinese President Xi Jinping supported it since the beginning.

In a push back to American influence on world politics, Wang said that “the world is not limited to the Ukraine issue” while emphasizing that the fate of the Middle East should be determined by the people of the Middle East.

“The foreign ministers of the two countries will meet each other to implement this decision and make necessary arrangements for the exchange of ambassadors,” the joint statement said. “The two sides agree to respect the sovereignty and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.”

Saudi Arabia and Iran had previously held talks aimed at reconciliation in Oman and Iraq.

Riyadh severed ties with Tehran in 2016 after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in the Iranian capital following the execution of a Shi’ite cleric in Saudi Arabia. Since then, they have fought a proxy war that has embroiled a number of neighboring countries mostly Yemen, bringing the region ever closer to war.

In Yemen, the two countries have supported opposite sides of a civil war that has been described by the United Nations as one the world’s worst humanitarian crises. From there, the Houthi rebels have fired missiles at both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, targeting oil infrastructure that is vital to their economies.

The deal also comes as Iran finds itself increasingly isolated on the global stage as talks to revive Iran’s 2015 nuclear pact with world powers are frozen and relations with Western states have faced further strains due to the Islamic Republic’s brutal crackdown on protests that started in September.

Iran’s main international ally Russia is preoccupied with the war in Ukraine, while China, its other ally, has lately been courting Tehran’s archrival Saudi Arabia.

FORMER RUPIAH BANDA REMEMBERED

MARCH 11, 2023
By Vem-reporter

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has described the late fourth President RUPIAH BANDA as a great statesman who helped with the smooth transition of power after the 2021 General Election.

President HICHILEMA says the 2021 General Election was an emotional and tense one which was well handled by former President BANDA by mediating between himself and his predecessor EDGAR LUNGU.

Speaking at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka during the first anniversary of the death of the former President, the Head of State said Mr. BANDA’s involvement in the transition behind the scenes ensured that there was peace in the country.

President HICHILEMA disclosed that President BANDA held three meetings between him and Mr. LUNGU to ensure there was a smooth transition in the nation.

He has urged all politicians and those in public service to learn from the former President who was good at forgiving and maintaining peace.

President HICHILEMA also described Mr. BANDA as a giant who was part of a group of freedom fighters who delivered independence to the country.

He said President BANDA showed his humility in 2011 when he peacefully handed over power to MICHAEL SATA when he lost the election.

President HICHILEMA said most Presidents at the moment are preoccupied with winning elections and it is not easy to willingly hand over the instruments of power.

And Former President BANDA’s brother JAMES has asked President HICHILEMA to initiate dialogue with his predecessor EDGAR LUNGU for love to exist between the two leaders.

Mr. BANDA said there is a lot of good will between the two national leaders and there is need for them to start talking to each other.

In a speech read for him by retired Brigadier General NEBERT PHIRI, Mr. BANDA said the nation wants to see President HICHILEMA and Former President LUNGU in talking terms.

He said if former President BANDA was alive, he would have initiated the dialogue.

And in a tribute to her husband, THANDIWE BANDA said the last 12 months have not been easy for her.

The homage read by her friend, ALICE BANDA, Mrs. BANDA also noted how much courage and work, she has had to employ, to live without the former President.

President BANDA’s children and grand-children also read tributes, represented by ALICE JOHNSON, the Niece, and SARAH BANDA, a grand-daughter.

Meanwhile, representing family friends, President BANDA’s former Press Aide, DICKSON JERE outlined five attributes, which he said are some of the great lessons, politicians can learn from the late leader.

Mr. JERE listed some of them as humility, equity and sports, which he said President BANDA exhibited in his life.

And in his homily, Vicar-General for the Cathedral, CHARLEY THOMAS described President BANDA’s memorial as a transition from mourning into healing.

Father THOMAS noted that the service is an event of strengthening President BANDA’s family, but also for the entire country to reflect on his contribution to national development.

He described President BANDA as a transitional person, in several of his various works.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema greets former First Lady Thandiwe Banda at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka today. This was during the first memorial of fourth Republican president Rupiah Banda.

HEADS WILL ROLL, KAJOBA WARNS POLICE OFFICERS WHO STILL MOUNT ROAD BLOCKS

HEADS WILL ROLL, KAJOBA WARNS POLICE OFFICERS WHO STILL MOUNT ROAD BLOCKS

By Kombe Chimpinde Mataka

INSPECTOR General of police Lemmy Kajoba has warned police officers who have continued to mount road blocks of stern action.

Upon being sworn in as Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu banned random road blocks.

But police officers till mount such road blocks in hidden places, including hiding at traffic lights waiting to pounce on motorists who bypass.

Speaking at this year’s Zambia Police Day held at Heroes Stadium, Kajoba said police must uphold high standards of discipline at all times.

‘’Next time when such an instruction is disregarded by some of you who want to do things against the command heads will roll,” he said.

And Kajoba bemoaned a surge in criminal gangs despite efforts made so far to rid communities of such elements.

“My command is seriously concerned with the mushrooming of criminal gangs commonly referred to as junkies. I feel so unhappy because at the time when my command is engaging efforts to restore peace and security in our country sosme people have chosen to mobilise themselves and form gang groups whose aim is to distabilise the good peace and order and security in the country. My command will not take this kindly,” Kajoba warned. “My command has come up with a number of remedial measures aimed at stamping out the issues of gang groups. My command has come up with a task force to carry operations sin affected areas, compounds and townships of Lusaka.”

He disclosed that from November last year over 500 junkies were apprehended for idol disorderly conduct.

Kajoba explained that 234 had been taken to court, the remainder paid admission of guilty fees at police stations, while 34 were still appearing before the courts of law.

“Most of these unruly kids are coming from their homes. I wish to send a timely warning to junkies that your time and days are numbered. The best you can do is quickly disband and avoid such criminal activities,” he said.

He said 200 had been successfully convicted and serving sentences.

Kajoba said police officers sacrifice their lives for the betterment of humanity and to keep government service running.

“As you maybe aware police officers spend little time with their families as their work entails being away from home for long hours, in somme cases for years. They are also deployed in risky-area operations both local and abroad during which some end up losing their precious lives or suffering injuries that result in permanent disfigurement in the line of duty,’’ Kajoba said further. ‘’This level of sacrifice undoubtly deserves commendation and appreciation. “My command is on an ambitious path of further improving the image of the Zambia Police Service through strategies, among others, massive sensitation of olive operation, in-service training discipline in all ranks and file of the Zambia Police Service, swift response to crime scene, conducting lectures in our formations throughout the country. So far these initiatives are yielding positive results.”

He said with the good will exhibited by government to develop infrastructure and procure equipment as well as staff, the service is determined to fight crime.

“Meaningful development cannot be achieved where security is not certain. I do remember one particular post which said and reminded us Police Service is a service full of pride,’’ said Kajoba. ‘’We are reminded that we are part of this reputable service that protects citizens and maintains law and order. Having read that I want to urge our officers and all of us that are celebrating our Police Open Day to be disciplined at all times because discipline in the Zambia Police is our principle and cornestone of the Zambia Police Service.’’

At the same function 1,600 police officers received medals for long service, 78 for meritorious service while 34 were awarded for bravery.

Three were also awarded for distinguished service.

The Open Day that was characterised by a display of skills and equipment by police was held under the theme ‘Police Service and community in partnership to fight crime’.

And Mwimbu announced that a tender to procure over 156 vehicles for police is under way and almost.

‘’I would like to upload the men in unoform who performed their duties in Katete when they were attacked by members of the public. You acted professsionally by ensuring that you did not unleash excessive force. You exposed yourselves to danger in your endeavor to serve the public,’’ said Mwiimbu. ‘’I have no doubt in my mind that in the immediate past under similar circumstances, there would have been a blood bath. I would like to congratulate you for excercisuon professionalism. Police officers must be receptive and responsive to society in order to build public trust and confidence.”

THE KAUNDA FAMILY

Former President Kenneth Kaunda and wife Betty had nine children namely, Panji, Waza, Wezi, Tilyenji, Masuzyo, Kaweche, Musata, Cheswa and Kambarage. Of these Masuzyo, Wezi and Kambarage have since passed on.

Masuzyo died in 1986 and his death was felt countrywide when his father openly announced that he had died from AIDS. AIDS was a deadly new still to be understood killer disease and a lot of people had some sort of stigma against sufferers of this disease. To hear that it had claimed a life of someone from the first family was indeed shocking. Dr Kaunda handled the matter professionally and used the death of his son to sensitize others on this new killer disease.

Major Wezi Kaunda was assassinated in the presence of his wife and children at his Kabulonga home in 1999. He was an apparent heir to Dr Kaunda and had taken over as UNIP President. His killing was a big blow to the former President.

Kambarage Kaunda Kaunda was born in 1964 from a set of twins, with Cheswa as his twin sister. Kambarage had caused a stare and a big headache to his father in 1989 when he shot dead a 20 year young lady, Tabeth Mwanza to death in Chelston area in an apparent stance of self defence as claimed by him after he was surrounded by an unruly crowd. He was sentenced to death by the ruling judge Claver Musumali in 1991. At that time Dr Kaunda was facing challenge to his position in the upcoming election and constitutionally did not have enough time to use his powers to pardon his son. However the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Kambarage in 1992 that he shot in self defence and as such had no case to answer. Kambarage died in January 2022 in Mozambique after complaining of a malaria attack.

Panji Kaunda is the first born child and current High Commissioner to Malawi under the UPND government. Kaweche will be remembered for being by his father side in his last days. Waza is a medical Doctor. Tilyenji is a local businessman and once took over as UNIP’s president after his brother, Wezi, was assassinated. Musata is a housewife and is married to late former President Rupiah Banda’s son, James.

TI-Z CLEARS THE AIR ON AUDITOR GENERAL ARREST AND CALLS FOR RESIGNATION

0

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TI-Z CLEARS THE AIR ON AUDITOR GENERAL ARREST AND CALLS FOR RESIGNATION

TI-Z notes a significant misrepresentation of its statement on the Auditor General and therefore wishes to categorically correct the wrong impression created that we are against calls for the Auditor General to resign.

Firstly, it should be clear that we welcome the arrest of the Auditor General Dr Dick Sichembe by the Anti-Corruption Commission for alleged corrupt practices as we believe that there should be no sacred cows when it comes to the fight against corruption. The arrest of such a senior official within the government system certainly fits this narrative.

Secondly, we are confident that once Dr Sichembe’s trial commences, it will give him the opportunity to defend himself against the charges slapped on him, while also believing that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has done its due diligence in investigating this matter.

Considering his high standing and the critical importance of his office. We call upon Dr Sichembe to consider resigning to allow for a thorough and credible trial. This is purely on moral grounds as we are well aware that his office enjoys constitutional security of tenure. We note that our initial statement was misrepresented due to this technicality.

In this vein we would like to remind the media and the general public that the office of auditor general is not the same as that of a Minister.

TI-Z has indeed repeatedly called for the President to fire Ministers found wanting because it is within the President’s powers to do so, and also within his powers to reappoint them if cleared of all charges.

This action is not a declaration that the Minister suspected of corruption is guilty, but solely meant to facilitate for thorough investigations, without any interference.

In line with Article 18(2a) of our constitution, Dr Sichembe and indeed any other person, including ministers, enjoy the presumption of innocence until the contrary is proved, and should therefore not be treated as a guilty person.

TI-Z has also noted calls from some circles of society demanding that President Hichilema should remove Dr Sichembe from his position as Auditor General.

Though we believe that the Auditor General should resign on moral grounds, we wish to caution against a decision to fire him since such a knee-jerk reaction is clearly against our laws.

Our constitution is very clear about the procedure for removal of an Auditor General from office, which is the same as that of removing a High Court judge.

This means that it has to be proved that Dr Sichembe has a mental or physical disability that makes him fail to do his work, or that he is incompetent, or that he has committed gross misconduct, or has been declared bankrupt.

In the absence of any of those factors, there is no constitutional premise for the removal of Dr Sichembe, even if he will be on trial for alleged criminal offences.

This is the reason why we can only appeal to his morality and integrity to voluntarily step down. Our hope is that this matter will be allowed to go through the judicial process without any pressures or undue infleunces.

HH IS MEDDLING IN THE PROCUREMNT PROCESS OF FERTILIZER

…he is a good pretender says Frank Bwalya

Kitwe, Saturday, March 11, 2023 ( Smart Eagles )

Socialist Party (SP) Spokesperson Frank Bwalya has described President Hakainde Hichilema as a good pretender.

Mr Bwalya said this in reference to President Hichilema’s recent remarks that he had cancelled the tender for the supply of fertilizer for this year because there was nothing to promote Zambian companies producing fertilizer.

He said the Government cited Corruption as the reason for the late distribution last year just to create a deliberate conducive environment to single source a company they had in mind.

Mr Bwalya said this is an indication that the President has started meddling in the supply chain of fertilizer.

“Last year he accepted responsibility for the mess that they created last year. Is he telling Zambians that he is then only intelligent Zambians who can handle that project,” he stated.

Mr Bwalya also said that the President pretends to care for the local businesses when only his selfish motives are prioritised.

“If he really cared about the local companies. How many tonnage was given to the local producers. And why was fertilizer bought at over 1400 when the prevailing price per tonne was 1000 USD,” he said.

The Socialist Party Spokesperson has since encouraged Zambians to continue Pilling pressure on the Government to ensure that they do the right thing.

He said there is need for a clean process in the procurement of fertilizer as it as an effect on production of the staple food.

“Umwana ubwangalila kufyakulya temwana musuma. Ba PK balilanda. Ba Hakainde Ikateniko ku nsapato nefyashala noti ku ubunga. Let those who were handling the process do so. If they are corrupt, let them be prosecuted and arrested. We have this mess because he cannot do a good job,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Bwalya said it is unacceptable to for government to consider giving land to a foreign country.

He said what the Government must do is to invest more in agriculture so that the peasant farmers can grow cashew crops, add value and export.

He said this is the only way the kwacha is going to be strengthened.

WHAT NEXT FOR ZAMBIA?

Ichalo nabashitisha! Naba goleka!

Saturday 11th March, 2023

1. First, they gave TAX HOLIDAYS and other tax incentives to mining conglomerates at the expense of the poor Zambians. We are losing over $3 billion per year in tax holidays and illicit financial flows from the mining sector alone.

We could have been raising up to $1billion dollars annually just from mining taxes alone; money that we could be injecting in the economy to create jobs, create business opportunities for our women and youths and help ease the high cost of living which is currently crushing our people, however President Hakainde SAMMY Hichilema would rather satisfy the needs of the white foreigners and squeeze our own indigenous SMEs out of business through high taxes, exorbitant levies, non-payment of arrears, lack of incentives and by giving all big contracts to foreign companies even for jobs that our own local businesses can easily do.

2. Second, they gave away our economic sovereignty to the IMF and World Bank over a meagre $1.3 billion loan that has come with stringent adverse austerity conditionalities that have heavily contributed to the high cost of living and the worsening poverty and economic malaise in our country. This is money that government could have easily raised by simply taxing the mines fairly but, as usual, ba SAMMY would rather please bazungu than protect the interests of Zambians whom he was elected to serve.

What have we gotten from the IMF loan other than high fuel prices, high electricity tariffs, high electricity connection fees, reduced government expenditure on social sectors such as education, health, etc, which has to some extent contributed to the chronic shortages of medicines and medical supplies in government clinics and hospitals; and shortages of teaching and learning materials in government schools among other challenges facing the Zambian people.

3. When we thought we had seen enough of the UPND Government’s treachery, hypocrisy and unpatriotism, through the awarding of corrupt deals such as the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway, the fertiliser scam, the MoU they signed with their puppet masters in which they have given away our lithium and other minerals, the Yakumbuyo Campaigns being tolerated by our leaders, the scandals involving the illegal mining of sugilite, manganese and other minerals by UPND Officials, BOOM, we have just been told they have now given away 20,000 hectares of our land to KENYAN farmers!

Here is the catch, Kenya will use our own land to grow their maize and other crops which they will then EXPORT back to Kenya. Does this really make any sense?

With IMF, further pushing for the privatisation of our state owned enterprises such as ZESCO, INDENI and others through what they are euphemistically calling ‘Restructuring’ of our government parastatals, what exactly will Zambia and Zambians remain with by the time President Hakainde SAMMY Hichilema and his New DOOM Government leave office?
