Donald Trump Claims He’s The “Best President For Black People” Since Abraham Lincoln

Former President Donald J. Trump is firmly stating that he is the Black people’s political savior, even as he continues to pursue the presidency.

Trump, while looking into one of the cameras during his NBC town hall last week, made a comment that has turned into a running motif of his re-election campaign.

“Apart from Abraham Lincoln, I have done more for the African American community than any president.”

Trump has been shouting this at Black voters throughout some of his campaign rallies and even from the White House balcony.

This phrase has evolved, becoming more restrained in the fall of 2019.

“We’ve done more for African Americans in three years than the broken Washington establishment has done in more than 30 years. No president has done more for our Black community this year.”

In a lengthy one-hour interview conducted last week for Dr. Phil Primetime, the former president restated his claim that he is the most suitable option for people of color.

Trump claimed, “Black people are seeing that I’m the best president for them since Abraham Lincoln.”

He has previously compared President Abraham Lincoln, whose Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 to help the Union defeat the Confederacy and provide a way for enslaved people in Southern states to enlist in the Civil War, with his politically motivated acts based on race.

He belonged to the Republican Party, much like Trump. The 16th president’s ideas on race are sometimes disregarded. He believed that Black people should not have the same rights as White people and suggested moving Black people to Liberia and Central America so that White people would not have to coexist with them.

“Black people are coming off of this, but they are used to voting for Democrats,” Trump continued.

But they possess intelligence. They are observing what is happening and are observing changes in the criminal justice system, Black colleges, and universities. They have funding because of me, and they can see everything I’ve done. What I achieved was unattainable by anyone. It’s true that these people do grin occasionally, as I have mentioned.”

Regarding criminal justice reform, Trump approved the First Step Act in 2018 while serving as president.

The bill included a new evaluation of prisoner rehabilitation initiatives, lowered life sentences for some drug-related offenses, and more.

Trump takes great satisfaction in the fact that he has pardoned 73 prisoners and commuted the sentences of 70 others.

The 212 pardons were among the 1,927 acts of clemency that former President Barack Obama issued during his two terms in office.

His record falls second to Harry Truman, who served as the commander-in-chief from 1945 to 1953.

He approved a law in 2019 that gives $250 million annually to HBCUs and other institutions with a focus on minorities.

The institutions “never had better champions in the White House,” he declared.

But the money did not originate under his administration; rather, his signature only restored financing that had expired during his tenure although he inherited the declining trend that has been in place since 2000.

He has also attempted to claim credit for the decrease in violent crime that has occurred nationally.

The former President has attempted to claim that criminal activity has decreased because, in contrast to Obama, he supports and praises police officers.

Trump has also praised himself on several occasions for attaining “the lowest Black and Hispanic unemployment rate in our country’s history.”

Before the epidemic, black employment increased, but these increases were not attributable to Trump’s presidency.

Despite all of this, Trump is the target of several indictments, two of which accused him of trying to rig the results of the 2020 presidential election which he lost to former Vice President Joe Biden—Trump declared his candidacy for re-election again in November 2022.

USHER RECALLS NELLY HELPING HIM RECONNECT WITH HIS FATHER AMID ‘PERSONAL ISSUES’

Usher has credited Nelly for helping him reconnect with his father when the two were experiencing issues prior to his death.

Speaking to LEVEL, the R&B singer discussed his complicated relationship with his father and the impact it had on his own attitude to parenting.

“I was going through some personal issues,” Usher explained. “My father was at a place where he was declining. And I had to make a decision if I was going to be a part of that decline after I had spent my entire life not knowing him.

“The conversation [with Nelly] was like, ‘Man, you know, not having the relationship with your father is bad enough up to this point. You’ll regret it if you don’t go see your dad if he passes.’

“I think had I not gone to see my father and spent that time, I would not have been able to close that chapter in which I was just seeking answers.”

The singer also elaborated on the questions he wanted to ask his father: “Why is it that you didn’t love me? Why didn’t you spend time to get to know me? Meanwhile, everybody else is celebrating what I made of what you gave me. You gave me a name. But you just never showed up to anything.

“I was looking for some connection. Is there a real connection? What about your traits did I inherit? Why do I do certain things? Why do I respond to certain things? Are there things I should know about myself that you have that I should look forward to?”

The “Nice & Slow” artist also opened up about some of his father’s positive traits: “He was a very charming person. Any person who came in contact with him, he could put a smile on their face.”

Usher’s father Usher Raymond III passed in 2008 after suffering from undisclosed health issues. He was also known to be an addict.

The singer told Grant Cardone that his father wanted his forgiveness during an interview in September 2023.

“My father and I had a very short amount of time together throughout my entire life, but the most valuable time was during his final days,” Usher said. “He asked me to forgive him for not being there.”

Tyron Giles: Teenager Declared Missing Releases Diss Track Aimed At His Grandma

Tyron Giles, 15, went missing a few days ago, according to his grandmother, who reported to the Columbus, Georgia, Police Department last week.

Although Giles’ grandma wasn’t sure of the adolescent’s location, he was last reported to be in the Oakland Park neighborhood.

He was reunited with his grandmother, but he wasn’t pleased with the hoopla surrounding his whereabouts.

Rather than a “Thank You” card or helping her with groceries, Tyron Giles decided to drop a diss track against her, and the vulgarity of it is absolutely absurd.

The diss song started out as: “I just been chillin’, livin’ like this h** cappin’/or not missin’”

However, it appears that his family did not appreciate the way he treated his grandma, and one of his relatives is rumored to have voiced his disapproval.

They talked about how his life was significantly better with his grandma -who had main custody over him and his three siblings- than it would have been with his father.

Who barely occasionally helps out financially, or his absent mother. The relative also stated that.

“This young man has always been challenging, but since my mother’s stroke in August of 2022, he has really lost his mind. After Easter, he fled because my mother would not allow him to be an adult and host young females for sleepovers.

Tyron Giles is said to have surrounded himself with the wrong people and activities but he is rather more worried about gaining influence online by disrespecting his grandmother.

The relative went on to say that: “It doesn’t matter how well these kids are raised or cared for, or whether their parents are present and actively involved. These kids are just out of order. They don’t really know what it is to be mature; they just want to be grown up and do what they want to do. They include Tyron Giles, his siblings, and, presumably, all youths in this era. Please ignore his antics; he’s simply out here pursuing clout. I never imagined that I would be having one of these discussions online, yet here we are”.

However, on the diss track, the Columbus Police Department has not yet made any comments.

0

Ashanti and Nelly are a married couple and have been for several months, according to a new report.

On Wednesday (June 19), TMZ got their hands on a marriage record for the expecting couple that revealed they tied the knot prior to the new year, on December 27, 2023.

While the document doesn’t state what city the lovers said ‘I do’ in, it was made official in St. Louis County, so it’s likely they wed in the rapper’s hometown.

Ashanti only just confirmed their engagement in April, and earlier this week, reflected on the moment her partner popped the question during a conversation with Entertainment Tonight.

“It was just such a beautiful, intimate moment,” she said. “We were not dressy.”

Considering the pair were lying in bed and watching TV in T-shirts and boxers, she was rightfully “shocked” he picked that setting.

The R&B icon added: “I cried. I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever. I FaceTimed everyone I know … I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy kind of like all in one.”

The couple got back together last year and are now expecting their first child together, which they revealed in conjunction with news of their engagement.

“The growth has been like superb, you know, like on both ends,” she said about their chemistry today compared to when they dated in the early 2000s. “We are both at a place where like before, sometimes we would argue and walk out, slam the door, and not talk for a few days.”

During their time apart, Ashanti began seeing Joyner Lucas after the two teamed up for the latter’s “Fall Slowly” music video.

During an interview with The Jason Lee Podcast that premiered in April, Lucas opened up about their relationship.

“She’s an amazing person,” he said about his former partner. “I’m a private n-gga. I don’t talk about it, but what I will say is that she’s an amazing person and [I’m] super happy for her. She’s about to have a baby. I know how much she wanted to be a mom.”

Ayra Starr Album Makes It Into Billboard’s Best 2024 Albums

Ayra Starr’s trendy album The Year I Turned 21 has been listed among the top 50 best albums by American music and entertainment magazine, Billboard.

The list compiled by Billboard staff also includes Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine, Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter, and Billie Eillish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft. A review of Ayra Starr project praised the singers’ honesty, exceptional artistry, and music diversity.

“Her self-examination is poignant, whether giving thanks to God about where she’s headed in life on the resilient single Commas, clutching her heart due to the pain of unrequited love on the Giveon-assisted “Last Heartbreak Song” or grieving her late father on tear-jerking closer The Kids Are Alright.

“While Starr’s deep, rich vocals anchor the album, she diversifies her Afropop/R&B palate by exploring other sounds, as Amapiano’s rollicking log drums power the multilingual female empowerment anthem Woman Commando (featuring Anitta and Coco Jones) and the joyfulness of highlife music is juxtaposed with melancholy melodies on Orun,” Herman Mamo wrote about the album.

The Year I Turned 21 arrived on Friday, May 31, 2024. The Sability hitmaker held a listening session in Paris, France, weeks before the official release.

It has guest features including Afrobeats finest, Asake, American singer Coco Jones and other notable artistes. Streaming figures for the album continue to soar on Spotify and other platforms.

Melodies on the compilation include Birds Sing of Money, Goodbye (Warm Up) ft Asake, Control, Lagos Love Story, Last Heartbreak Song, Bad Vibes.

In a recent interview, Ayra stated that she chose to work with the artistes featured on the album because she had a musical soft spot for each of them.

“Everybody I collaborated with on this album, I genuinely love their sound. I say I’m the creative director of my music because I hear different things and I put different things together,” she stated.

Weeks after her 2024 single Commas started trending, Ayra stated she was working on her second studio album but held on until the end of April 2024 to reveal the title of the project as The Year I Turned 21.

The sensational performer recently grabbed three nominations ahead of the 2024 BET Awards, scheduled to take place later this month.

Putin and Kim Jong Un vow to help each other if either country is attacked

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un have vowed to aid each other if either country is attacked on a rare visit by Putin to North Korea, his first time in 24 years to the hermit nation.

The mutual defence clause is part of a comprehensive strategic partnership the pair signed in a bid to unite against the US.

Russian state media said Putin spoke to Kim face-to-face for about two hours and thanked him for his country’s support for the war in Ukraine.

Thousands trooped to welcome Putin in a lavish ceremony when he arrived in the North Korean capital on Wednesday, June 19

Western worries have grown over an arrangement in which North Korea provides Russia with badly needed munitions in exchange for economic aid and technology transfers that could enhance Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and missile program.

Kim said the “fiery friendship” was now even closer than during Soviet times, and promised “full support and solidarity to the Russian government, army and people in carrying out the special military operation in Ukraine to protect sovereignty, security interests and territorial integrity”.

He also hailed Russia’s “important role and mission in preserving the strategic stability and balance in the world”.

"The situation in the world is exacerbating and changing rapidly," Kim said.

"In this situation, we intend to strengthen strategic interaction with Russia."

The two leaders also exchanged gifts, with Kim reportedly receiving a Russian-built limousine, a tea set and an admiral’s dirk (dagger) and Putin being given various works of art.

North Korea is under heavy sanctions from the United Nations Security Council – of which Russia is a member – over its weapons program while Russia faces sanctions by the US and its Western partners over its aggression in Ukraine.

I’m used to death’ – Former Man United manager Louis van Gaal

0

Former Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal has shared an update on his health two years after he revealed that he suffers from aggressive prostate cancer.

After the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Dutchman, 72 resigned from his third stint as Netherlands boss after the tournament to focus on fighting his prostate cancer, which requires him to undergo radiation treatment and use a urine bag.

Now, the manager is filming for a documentary titled ‘Always Positive’ alongside the director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, Maria Blasco. The film will serve to support oncological research.

In an interview with Spanish outlet AS, Van Gaal explained how he is coping while living with the disease, delivered an update on the treatment he is receiving, and opened up on being ‘used to death’ in his family.

Asked if the prostate cancer has changed his outlook on life, Van Gaal said: ‘Not much, really. Look, I come from a family in which we are nine brothers. I am the smallest. My father died when I was 11 years old. He died at 53.

‘My first wife died when she was 39. And all my brothers died too soon. I’m used to death. That’s why I know that death is a part of life, and you can deal with it.

‘When I first heard I had cancer I said, “Okay, it’s not good news, but I better try to do something about it.” Each human can react in a different way. That’s why I say: “Be yourself.”’

Van Gaal coached Manchester United between 2014 and 2016, lifting the FA Cup during his final season at Old Trafford.

He took a five-year break from management before returning to the Netherlands dugout in 2021.

The 72-year-old had battled with the disease for over a year before announcing the news publicly to the world, appearing in good health while managing his country.

‘I have always looked very young, that is the reason for my good appearance,’ he said, laughing. ‘My mother was dying and until the last moment she had her face like a flower. No one could see that she was sick. And I have the same problem. Or the same luck.

‘I have been living with the disease for just over three years, with radiation, hormone injections, operations, catheters and urine bags. It’s unbelievable, but I can handle it. I have managed it, and I have been able to do it even working during the last World Cup.

‘I even think that during the World Cup I managed it even better, because I had a goal. And with the cancer process it happens just like with the process of being a coach, you look for a goal. For me it was positive to deal with both things.’

I swear I will be faithful; I will obey – Ramaphosa’s pledge at inauguration for second term

South Africa has entered a “new era,” announced President Cyril Ramaphosa as he was inaugurated for his second full term.

Despite the African National Congress (ANC) not achieving a parliamentary majority in last month’s election, Ramaphosa remains in power.

The ANC formed a coalition with its long-time rival, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and other parties to govern. In his inauguration speech, Ramaphosa commended this coalition but cautioned that failure to address deep inequalities could lead to instability in the country.

“Through the ballots that they have cast, the people of South Africa have made plain their expectation that the leaders of our country should work together,” President Ramaphosa, 71, said solemnly.
“They have directed their representatives to put aside animosity and dissent, to abandon narrow interests, and to pursue together only that which benefits the nation.”

Among those in attendance were the leaders of Nigeria, Angola, Zimbabwe, Congo-Brazzaville, and Eswatini, who gathered in the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre outside the Union Building in Pretoria. A large crowd assembled outside the government’s official seat, waving national flags.

Under a crisp blue winter sky, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo administered the oath of office to President Cyril Ramaphosa. This event marks a significant moment for South Africa, highlighting Ramaphosa’s journey from union leader to mine boss to president, and underscores the unity deal as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

“I swear I will be faithful to the Republic of South Africa… I will obey, observe and uphold the constitution and all other laws of the republic,” the president said.

A band performed the national anthem, followed by a 21-gun salute and an army helicopter fly-past. The African National Congress (ANC), which has ruled since the end of apartheid in 1994, lost its majority for the first time after the May 29 election yielded no clear winner.

The ANC secured 40% of the vote, a 17 percentage point drop, losing 70 seats in parliament. Lawmakers re-elected Mr. Ramaphosa after the ANC formed a power-sharing agreement with the pro-business Democratic Alliance (DA), which received 22% of the vote, and three smaller parties.

The DA, the ANC’s main new governing partner, holds free-market ideologies that conflict with the ANC’s social welfare traditions and is often perceived as serving the interests of the white minority, an allegation it denies. Despite their differences, both parties are united in their goal to repair the country’s infrastructure, ensure basic services like water and power, and create jobs.

This coalition represents a shift towards the political center, as the ANC’s left-wing and populist breakaway factions declined the invitation to join a national unity government.

In his address, Mr. Ramaphosa assured South Africans that the coalition is dedicated to reducing inequalities and fostering economic growth. He also highlighted the stark divisions between the affluent and the impoverished within the country.

Despite progress, “our society remains deeply unequal and highly polarized,” he said.

“There are toxic cleavages and an incipient social fragmentation that can easily turn into instability.”
And he warned against “those who seek to stand in our way, to inflame tensions” and “undermine our institutions.” They will not succeed because South Africans are resolute, he said.

Mr Ramaphosa did not say to whom he was referring. But the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party formed six months ago by former President Jacob Zuma didn’t attend what it called the “farcical” inauguration.
The party, which won 15% of votes and obtained 58 parliamentary seats, also boycotted parliament’s first sitting last Friday.

It has since joined a counter-coalition of opposition parties, vowing to oppose the policies of what Mr Zuma described as an “unholy alliance” between black and white elites to benefit the markets, not the people.
It “must be crushed before it finds its feet,” he said, “in the streets, in the courts and in parliament.”

MK has stated that its protests will be peaceful, though concerns remain that Mr. Zuma’s stance could incite violence among his supporters, who previously instigated deadly riots in July 2021 following his imprisonment for refusing to testify at a public inquiry into corruption during his presidency.

President Ramaphosa is expected to appoint a cabinet in the coming days, incorporating members from the DA and three other smaller parties, collectively holding 68% of the parliamentary seats. Following this, the president is anticipated to outline policies aimed at reviving the struggling economy.

The coalition faces several challenges, including potential ideological clashes within the alliance, dissatisfaction from left-wing elements within the ANC, and the threat of volatile political opposition. Despite these obstacles, many South Africans are hopeful for the coalition’s success.

“This is a moment when we must choose to either move forward together,” Mr Ramaphosa said “or risk losing all we have built.”
The former trade unionist and business tycoon first became president in 2018 when his predecessor, Mr Zuma, was forced to resign because of corruption allegations. Mr Zuma has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

I’m getting better in my pairing with Jude Bellingham; it’d get better – Phil Foden

0

After a shaky start to England’s European Championship campaign that had critics questioning his starting spot, Phil Foden (24) insists his partnership with Jude Bellingham (20) will only flourish.

Foden was a headliner this past Premier League season, pouring in 27 goals for Manchester City across all competitions to win Premier League Footballer of the Year honours.

But lining up on the left of a front three in England’s 1-0 win over Serbia, with Jude Bellingham occupying the central No. 10 position in which Foden has thrived with City, he drifted out of the game.

“Jude’s obviously an exceptional talent,” Foden said in a Football Association video. “He’s a leader now; I think he’s turning into a leader. I think our link-up play is good at times and I think it’s improving as well, and can keep getting better. So he’s an exciting talent and I enjoy playing with him.”

While some chalked up Sunday’s performance as just a bad game for Foden, it drew criticism from some pundits.

“I don’t think Phil Foden played well, he didn’t get into it,” former England striker Ian Wright said on the BBC match broadcast. “People talk about Foden and his positions. I can understand that because of how good he is as a footballer, but he didn’t get into the game.

“We can’t always blame the system. He needs to make it happen for himself and demand the ball,” Wright said

Former Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas said players with Foden’s talent have the quality to hold the ball anywhere on the pitch.

“It’s about: do you want it enough to make a difference and hold the ball for your team? Do you want to make things happen? Do you enjoy getting the ball under pressure?” he said. “I think players like Foden, they need to step up.”

Foden, whom City manager Pep Guardiola has described as the “most talented player” he has ever seen, struggled during his European Championship debut three years ago as well and was taken out of the team after England’s opening two games.

His performance at the 2022 World Cup was notably different. He made his first appearance as a 71st-minute substitute against Iran.

He then scored in England’s 3-0 victory over Wales and provided assists for goals by Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka in their 3-0 win over Senegal in the round of 16.

“I think the first game of a major tournament is always the most difficult,” Foden said of the Serbian win that England nearly blew with a nervy second half. “Obviously, we had to defend at times and dig deep.

“But I think that shows a different side to us and if we’re going to win something, I think that we have to do that.”

England, who sit atop Group C, face Denmark on Thursday in Frankfurt and close out the group stage against Slovenia on June 25th.

Kalabo MP weeps in parliament for calling his constituency a rural area

Kalabo MP weeps in parliament for calling his constituency a rural area

A tempest in a teapot erupted in Zambia’s parliament yesterday when the Energy Minister, Peter Kapala, dared to describe Kalabo Central constituency as “rural.”

The normally dry parliamentary chambers witnessed a tearful outburst from the constituency’s MP, Chinga Miyutu,.

The dispute arose after Miyutu inquired about government plans for a fueling station in his constituency.

Kapala, in his response, revealed the government’s shift away from funding rural filling stations.

“Madam speaker, it’s a very good question to give an answer on what criteria was used in disengaging from the construction of rural filling stations, madam speaker just like government has disengaged in the procurement of petroleum product, it is on the same basis why we had to disengage from the construction of rural filling stations, I submit,”responded Kampala

This explanation, however, did not sit well with Miyutu.

He argued that Kapala’s use of the term “rural” to describe Kalabo was discriminatory, especially since the constituency boasts a Kalabo Town Council.

Miyutu expressed his disappointment, highlighting the economic disparity between urban and rural areas.

He argued that government support is crucial for rural development, especially when it comes to attracting private investment.

“It hurts me because it shows disregard and negative discrimination, why is it that the government centers on the urban areas?” Miyutu questioned.

“… You know madam speaker, governments are meant to save those without.”

The MP’s emotional plea for the minister to retract the “rural” label was unsuccessful.

However, deputy speaker Malungo Chisangano clarified that the “rural” classification originated from the Ministry of Local Government.

Chisangano said it is not a disadvantage to belong to a rural setting, but rather an advantage with investors who intend on developing such areas as they are given other incentives.

“Ohhh, Don’t cry, don’t cry,” some MP’s were heard shouting in parliament consoling Miyutu.

Ndola Archbishop Benjamin Phiri Blasts Govt, Demands Explanation Over Police Disruption Of Church Services

NDOLA ARCHBISHOP BLASTS GOVT, DEMANDS EXPLANATION OVER POLICE DISRUPTION OF CHURCH SERVICES

…We Should not be Taken for Granted… We are not Playing, We are not Joking!!!

In a scathing rebuke, the newly appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Ndola, H.E. Msgr. Benjamin Phiri, has strongly condemned the police’s actions in disrupting church services in the diocese last Sunday.

Archbishop His Grace, the Most Reverend Dr Phiri expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as a blatant violation of the fundamental right to freedom of religion and assembly.

“We are not playing, we are not joking here,” the visibly irate Archbishop said. “I found it strange, and I do not know which law is being used by the police officers for them to detain [a congregant] without sufficient reasoning.”

The Archbishop, was referring to the incident at Divine Mercy Parish, where a 66-year-old parishioner, Mr. Kamwale Phiri, was arrested for simply taking photographs of the heavy police presence around the church.

“If I was there, I would have done the same,” the Archbishop declared. “It’s not prohibited to take pictures in this country, especially if you are on your own premises.”

“When I was told of the police presence, I asked the people who told me what the police were looking for and they told me looks like they are looking for opposition leaders.
I said the Church is a wrong place to look for opposition leaders.
I advised my leaders to continue monitoring the situation and report to me,” he said.

The police’s actions extended to the Masala area, where they reportedly “arrived and took over the premises, controlling who comes in and who goes out.” The Archbishop made it clear that he did not authorize such an intrusion, describing it as an “illegal action on our property.”

“At Masala they [police] arrived and took over the premises controlling who come in and who goes out [the church] . I did not authorise that action so it was an illegal action on our property! I expect government to give a good explanation for that rather than the statement which was off the cuff by the police spokesperson.”

Addressing the police spokesperson’s statement, the Archbishop scathingly remarked, “I am not happy about the whole situation, I have made it known to the government, and I do not want such a situation to repeat itself.”

The Archbishop’s stern words reflect the deep unease within the Catholic community in Zambia, who fear that their right to freely practice their faith is under threat.

“People are free to gather and worship,” the Archbishop emphasized. “They should not be unduly inconvenienced or intimidated.”

The incident has raised concerns about the government’s approach to religious institutions, particularly in the wake of the ongoing political tensions in the country. The Archbishop warned that the church will not be taken for granted, and he urged the government to treat the church with respect and engage it properly.

As the Catholic faithful in Ndola and across Zambia grapple with this distressing situation, the Archbishop’s unwavering stance serves as a clarion call for the protection of religious freedoms and the rule of law in the nation.

Police officers disappoint State, fail to identify Munir, Emmanuel Mwamba

POLICE officers yesterday shocked Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri’s juniors when they failed to identify Emmanuel Mwamba and Lumezi constituency member of parliament Munir Zulu in a video recording they submitted to Court as part of their evidence in Zulu’s seditious case.

Despite Mwamba and Zulu being outspoken public figures the two police officers claimed they have never seen them before neither do they know the prominent duo.

The ignorance exhibited by the police officers made the gallery titter as Zulu’s lawyers were beaming in anticipation for an easy ride in cross examination.

In this matter Zulu is charged with three counts of seditious practices.

Testifying before resident magistrate Faidess Hamaundu, Micheal Ilishebo a police officer at Force Headquarters under cyber crime criminal investigation department said on May 29, he received a letter from lnspector Tembo of Lusaka division who needed his help to validate a video that related to a case he was investigating.

He said he was given a web link which took him to a Facebook page called Patriotic Front which he validated.

When describing the content of the video, Ilishebo said he could only recognize two men, one who is light complexioned and donned a brown jacket coupled with specs in reference to Emmanuel Mwamba.

He said the other one was fair in complexion and wore a checkered purple shirt, with a black padded bomber vest and had a blue microphone placed in front of him, in reference to Zulu.

Ilishebo said he watched the video for a few seconds but could not identify the two men.

During Cross examination by Emmanuel Phiri the witness said he does not know the offense that Zulu is charged with.

When crossed examined by Mcqueen Zaza if he saw the video, the witness said he did not view it for more than a minute.

Asked if any person incited violence in the video the witness denied.

And detective chief inspector Jonathan Phiri, a digital forensic analyst based Zambia police service headquarters under the criminal investigation department said he received a letter from his supervisors asking him to extract a video from a facebook link that he was provided with

“I opened the link and I saw a video which was broadcasted live. It was posted on May 26 at 14:02 hours I extracted the video there was a man wearing a brown jacket and a white shirt inside, light in complexion he was also wearing specs addressing the media. (Emmanuel Mwamba),”he said.

“There was also a man wearing a purple checkered shirt and a black vest addressing the media I don’t know them. My specific role was to extract a video and preserve it not to master what was being discussed in the video.”

He said he used a facebook download manager developed by facebook to download the video and he didn’t encounter any challenges as the process was smooth.

“I didn’t have challenges downloading the video, facebook download manager extracted the video for me,”Phiri said.

When asked by Chisomo Sikanyika if he could identify the men in the video the witness said; “I don’t know them it’s my first time to see them,” leaving the State advocate dumbfounded.

When cross examined by Zaza the witness said the forensic report does not indicate any crime that was being analyzed.

“Am not in a position to state the crime that was committed I was only instructed to extract the video,” Phiri said.

He said that he cared less to know the contents of the video and neither was there dereliction of duty on his part by his lack of curiosity.

Trial continues today.

DELAYED IMPLEMENTATION OF CAMPAIGN PROMISES DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN LYING

DELAYED IMPLEMENTATION OF CAMPAIGN PROMISES DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN LYING

Authored By Mupishi Jones

When I tell you that thieves will come and break into your house on Friday, but instead come to break into your house the following Monday, would I have lied to you?

Delayed implementation of some of the UPND promises doesn’t necessarily mean that they were lying unless they are the architectures of the circumstances that led to the delayed implementation.

Secondly, look at the intention, when you look back at the time they were saying these, did they mean each and every word they said? Yes they did, their intentions were pure and unquestionable.Do they still have those intentions even today? Yes! The Republican President and his team have on time without numbers admitted to the challenges facing the country as well as the factors contributing towards delays in fulfilling some of their promises.

Amongst these promises is the issue of mealie meal price. No one can doubt the efforts put in place at the beginning of this farming season.Everything that required government intervention to increase our yield, was put in place. This time even civil servants were geared to contribute. However, draught creeped in and everything went against governments plan.
This again, the government is visibly addressing this maize issue with the seriousness it deserves .
Today we’re talking about winter maize just to ensure that we double yields.
Yes the current government found some maize stocks. The question is where and how did the previous regime acquire that maize? What the previous regime would never tell you is that it used to get that maize on promissory notes,on credit promising to pay farmers on a later date, unfortunately that later date never came until they existed office in 2021 August. This debt was inherited by the current regime and it has since been paid off after selling the maize stocks.

The other remaining teething issue is that of relatively high fuel pump price. The government have explained on main occasions why there seem to be a difference between how the price used to be during the previous regime and how it is today.Previously the government used to add on to the actual market price per every litre citizens purchased to the oil marketing companies. This is called subsidy.
However, the previous government despite committing itself to be paying it’s commitment to these oil marketing companies,it never used to pay.By the time they left government in 2021, the previous regime left a debt of $800m unpaid to these oil marketing companies. The reality is that, had the previous regime won the elections and continued in government,it could have been confronted with not only this debt, but moral issues of losing trustworthiness from these oil marketing companies. We had reached extremely low credibility levels as a country. No one was willing to borrow us anymore and hence those loan defaults as the last painful option.
The price of fuel pump price would have jumped to more than it is today. The current government picked up that $800m debt, sat down with these oil marketing companies, mutually agreed on a payment plan and the government is now paying without accumulating further debt.

That’s how the previous regime used to survive,on credit without any convincing repayment plan, they were operating on borrowed time and funds.

Try to do your own verification research on these issues I’m raising and prove me wrong.

This borrowing without any tangible repayment plan was extended to road construction.A huge debt $18 billion was left unpaid by the previous regime which the current government is paying.

It must be noted that issues of debt, trustworthiness, honesty, integrity are moral issues tied to ones upbringing.

There are some individuals whose habit is not honouring their debts when they fall due even when they have money. Its just an inborn inclination to refuse to take responsibility for their debts. We have such individuals within our communities. This habit is carried along with them in an unfortunate event that they become leaders at whatever level. These are leaders that can plunge their organisations or countries in debt traps.

As I conclude,a leader can only be deemed to be a liar when he is yet to implement his promises if the circumstances that led to the delay in implementing the promises are as a result of his own intentional making.

I submit

LUAPULA, ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GIANT IN SLUMBER

LUAPULA, ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GIANT IN SLUMBER

…..A 10 provinces specific tailored economic development strategy is the future for Zambia.

June 19, 2024

I wish to make a very strong bipartisan call to President Hakainde Hichilema and his Administration to unlock the economic potential of Luapula.

The dormant economic fortunes of Luapula are the low hanging ECONOMIC FRUITS that the new dawn government can pick WITHOUT much effort.

With unpredictable weather patterns, I make this bipartisan call to the President and Government for 3 major reasons and the 4th is a bonus:

  1. Luapula holds the largest percentage of water bodies in Zambia. Luapula alone has more than 10 lakes without counting the numerous rivers.

Samfya the biggest district in Luapula Province has 3 lakes namely lake bangweulu, lake chifunabuli and lake walilupe. Unfortunately in all these lakes fish stocks are depleting with lake Bangweulu leading the way.

A Government plus private sector initiatives on commercial fish restocking on these lakes can do wonders for Luapula, Zambia and Africa.

  1. Luapula holds massive wetlands that can be exploited for commercial use such as rice farming, banana farming, sugarcane farming etc.

The Bangweulu wetlands and Mweru wetlands are the biggest in Luapula and ideal for such commercial activities.

Bangweulu wetlands/basin area alone is fed by 17 principle rivers from a catchment area of 190,000 kms squared, but is drained by only one river, the Luapula.

  1. Luapula has massive tourism potential which remains largely untapped. The province has some breathing water and wildlife attractions that are not commercially exploited. Luapula has more than 13 prime tourist attractions.

Some of the prime tourist attractions include; Lumangwe Falls, Ntumbacushi Falls, Kabwelume Waterfalls, Mumbuluma Falls in Mansa, Mumbotuta Waterfalls, Kundabwika Waterfalls, Chilongo Waterfalls and Lusenga Plain National Park etc

  1. Additionally, the Zambian people in all the provinces have a rich cultural and political heritage and luapula is no exception. This can be utilised for both local and international tourism. Apart from the Umutoboko ceremony, other ceremonies that can be of commercial benefit to Zambia remain unknown outside the province and the world.

Luapula can cement the economic legacy of the new dawn administration whilst equally developing other provinces. The Government must build supporting infrastructure that has long been absent in Luapula to fully awaken this economic giant.

Luapula can massively contribute to Zambia’s economic independence our people have so long yearned for. No one but us will develop Zambia.

Too many court cases have gotten me mixed up, Lusambo tells magistrate

Too many court cases have gotten me mixed up, Lusambo tells magistrate

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Court has discharged the warrant of arrest which it issued against former Lusaka province minister Bowman Lusambo and his wife Nancy Manase.

Lusambo and his wife were placed on bench warrant last week for missing court without justification.

Yesterday the Bulldozer and the bulldozress walked themselves into detention after playing hide and seek with law enforcement officers during the weekend to ‘elude’ an arrest.

When the case was called before magistrate Faidess Hamaundu yesterday Anti-Corruption Commission prosecutor Daniel Ngwira informed the Court that the warrant was executed as the couple turned up at Court on its own and was detained in the accused doc.

When asked to explain why he missed Court Lusambo said he had a mix up with dates due to many cases on his plate.

“On that material day I had mistaken the days, when we were adjourning the matter there was the issue of 13 and 14. To me I thought we would be coming on 13 and 14 and not the 12th of June. I sincerely apologize to the court for missing the 12th day of appearing before Court it wasn’t deliberate your honor,” he said.

Lusambo said he was informed about his warrant of arrest by the ACC and decided to make his way to Court.

“We received information that the matter has been adjourned to the 18 of June I came to Court this morning voluntarily your honor as always. I have been coming to Court as and when the Court requires me to be present. It was a mistaking of the date. There are so many cases the mistaking of dates was not deliberate,”said Lusambo.

His wife Nancy re-echoed his sentiments.

“I just had in mind of the 13th I never knew about the 12th, I heard the date has been moved to 18th. If I was aware I was going to make myself available or I would have sent the sureties to come. My husband was on the Copperbelt if I was aware I was going to come,”said Nancy.

His lawyer Nkhula Botha apologized for missing court saying he was under the weather when the case came up and he sent his colleague Emmanuel Phiri to inform the court about his absence.

He said he also communicated to ACC prosecutor Chawezi Nalwenga informing her that he was unwell.

“I must apologize to the Court it was not my intention to miss court,” Botha said.

He explained that he sent a message to Lusambo reminding him to attend Court and he had screen shots of their conversation which he was armed with to produce before Court if the magistrate allowed him.

“I sent a message to him (Lusambo) that court was coming up in the morning it was prudent that his wife and his sureties appear before court. He told me that he was out of town and it was practically impossible,” Botha said.

“I have the messages of the communication I had with my client reminding him about Court if the Court may indulge me to produce them. It was not the intention of either one to disobey the authority of this court. As officers of the Court We are mindful and aware of the professional duty we owe to the court and always thrive to live up to the expectations as owed to the Court.”

Chawezi confirmed having received a call from Botha

“I started engaging with Mr Botha on June 10 and I informed him that him that the matter was coming up on Wednesday 12th June,” she said.

“Our decision to engage was owing to the fact that we had witnesses from out of town and had travelled for purposes of attending court on June 12. That’s out of professional courtesy to engage defense counsel. When Mr Botha informed me he was unwell he did intimate that an advocate from the firm would be in attendance.”

Magistrate Hamaundu noted that the case had dragged since 2022 and warned the defense to take the case seriously.

She gave the couple a benefit of doubt and canceled the warrant.

“I will give the accused a benefit of doubt if they fail to attend court without a proper explanation next time this court willl charge them for contempt of Court and will not hesitate to remand them in custody. I hereby revoke the bench warrant,” said magistrate Hamaundu.

She adjourned the case to June 24.

In this matter Lusambo is facing 10 corruption-related charges among them one count of corrupt acquisition of public property, five counts of possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime, three counts of tax evasion and one count of conspiracy to defraud.

He is jointly charged with Nancy for possessing four houses in Silverest Gardens, Chongwe which are suspected to be tainted.

19 June 2024

American technology giant Google has entered the Zambian market to revolutionalise the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector following incentives given by the government.

Google, through it’s subsidiary, Google Cloud, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Technology and Science which will see the construction of a Center of Excellence in digital transformation, innovation, offering skills development and knowledge sharing.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Lusaka, Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati has disclosed that the incentives given to the private sector have played a key role in compelling Google to invest in Zambia.

He also disclosed that since the incentives were given a year ago, internet penetration has risen from 53% to 64%.

Mr. Mutati says in the last one year alone, the private sector has laid 5,000 kilometers of fibre optic, which brings the total to 25,000 kilometres of fibre optic laid since Zambia got its independence in 1964, this has significantly increased internent penetration.

“We gave incentives to the private sector last year and what we have witnessed is growth in internet penetration in the past one year. We even saw the entry of 5G which is impressive. This increase in Internet speed, penetration and other incentives given to the private sector has given Google a compelling reason to enter our ICT space,” said Mr. Mutati.

The Minister is hopeful that the coming of Google Cloud will help improve people’s lives.

He also said government is keen on utilising the opportunities that Artificial Intelligence is bringing to the nation.

And Google Cloud Director Global Strategic Initiatives Manuel Greisinger said the company is connecting Zambia to UMOJA, a fibre optic project which will run from Kenya through South Africa to Australia

Mr. Greisinger said UMOJA will help Zambia adapt fast to artificial intelligence so that government services and private sector work can be enhanced.

He said there is need for Zambia to harness the power of technology.

Meanwhile, Women in Technology Network Executive Chairperson Milimo Munyati said the signing of the MoU will enhance the work of those providing mentorship on digital transformation.

Ms. Munyati said her organisation will fully embrace the partnership to ensure that all women benefit from technology.

I’ve not issued a statement against HH – Prof Lumumba

PROFESSOR Patrick Loche Lumumba, a renowned Kenyan constitutional lawyer, Pan-Africanist and an anti-corruption activist has dismissed an online report purported to have been issued by him describing President Hakainde Hichilema as a full blown dictator.

When reached out by the Daily Nation yesterday, Prof Lumumba denied ever having issued any statement and described the story which went viral as fake and nonsensical.

“I have seen the nonsense being circulated and attributed to me. I have made no such statement. It is sad that people misuse social media,” Prof Lumumba told the Daily Nation.

Edgar LUNGU wrote:

Fellow Citizens,

This morning, I came across the latest remarks from Kenyan’s renowned constitutional lawyer and Pan Africanist, Professor Patrick Loche Lumumba concerning Zambia’s political leadership which caught my attention.

Speaking in Kenya yesterday at a radio show focusing on “democracy in Africa” as monitored by News24, the Kenyan distinguished lawyer said “everyone can now see that former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu was a democrat and that Hichilema is a dictator”. Remember, this is Prof. Lumumba who was very critical of my leadership everywhere, praised President Hichilema in opposition and my administration even blocked him from entering Zambia between 2018 and 2020.

I have read that he was expressing his latest views on recent developments in our country where Zambia Police has been blocking public rallies for the opposition parties since 2021 as well as chasing non UPND political leaders from attending church services including the brutal invasion of the Catholic Church office in Kabwe where armed police went to search for me like a criminal. “It is very clear that Hichilema was all the time pretending to be a democrat”, Prof. Lumumba concluded.

From an honest comparison, I am happy to hear from Professor Lumumba that my efforts to promote and safeguard democracy in our motherland which were undermined then are now deemed to have been far much better when mirrored with HH’s UPND regime. When foreign scholars who at some point criticized you begin to appreciate your efforts on democracy promotion against the person they once deemed better, then it means that their feedback is morally noble and politically sincere.

In September, 2020, I remember Prof. Lumumba saying “President Edgar Lungu is intolerant, paranoid and a demagogue”. Today, I am happy to hear that the same Kenyan lawyer and Pan Africanist is saying “everyone can now see that former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu was a democrat and that Hichilema is a full fledged dictator”. This gives me a sigh of relief as I am being vindicated for warning everyone that “you will appreciate me when I leave office”.

Therefore, I agree in totality with Professor Lumumba when he argues Zambians to find ways of terminating the mandate of Hichilema in 2026 because “he poses a danger to Zambia’s peace and Africa at large”. Remember, it is the first time since independence that under my successor, a brotherly nation, our own neighboring Zimbabwe now feels so insecure about Zambia because of wrong political leadership and foreign policies in Lusaka. 2026 should be marked as “a year to restore democracy and good neighborliness”.

When a person who praised you as ‘the hope and light of Zambia’ begins to describe you as “the worst dictator since Zambia’s independence”, then wisdom demands that you pose, listen and take a deep self reflection at once. President Hichilema must listen to “his former allies” like Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa, Bflow, Laura Miti, Brebner Changala, Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu and Professor Patrick Lumumba himself and tone down on his authoritarian and law-fare politics. He is speedily losing stakeholders trust and public confidence both at home and abroad!

And if President Hichilema is to start walking democratic values, he will do better to stay away from political vengeance, bitterness, tribalism, regionalism, selective justice, weaponizing state agencies, suffocating free speech as well as start allowing opposition parties to freely conduct politics in public spaces. It is not by coincidence that Professor Patrick Lumumba, Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, Brebner Changala, Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, Bflow or his Laura Miti are all complaining that “he is a dictator and a threat to national peace”.

Once more, I am happy to learn that many stakeholders at home and abroad now appreciating the fact that I was by far a democratic leader who meant well for Zambia than President HH who repeatedly promised to rule democratically better than me but has delivered and shown “the worst despotic politics so far”.

CONCOURT CAN’T JUSTLY TAKE AWAY LUNGU’S ELIGIBILITY – Fred M’membe

CONCOURT CAN’T JUSTLY TAKE AWAY LUNGU’S ELIGIBILITY

It’s very clear that Mr Hakainde Hichilema doesn’t want to see Mr Edgar Lungu’s name on the presidential ballot paper in 2026.

But this unbridled determination to block Mr Lungu from contesting elections in 2026 is very dangerous and can lead to a series of problems, violations, and destruction of institutions.

The Constitutional Court is certainly not the best institution to aid Mr Hichilema in this undertaking. The hands of the Constitutional Court are tightly tied by Res judicata. It is certainly not well placed to play this assassin role. Let them do something else.

They have tried the stealing and destruction of PF to deny Mr Lungu a platform for his 2026 presidential election bid, but it doesn’t seem to be yielding the desired result. The best thing they can do is simply to let Mr Lungu stand and work very hard to defeat him in a free, fair, and peaceful elections by delivering to the Zambian people on their many promises.

Whereas it might not have been easy for the Constitutional Court to decide Mr Lungu’s eligibility to stand as a presidential candidate in the 2021 elections, it is now very easy for the Constitutional Court to deal with the case before it challenging his eligibility. This is because a final decision was made by this court on this same matter that Mr Lungu was eligible. It will be a gross injustice to Mr Lungu to reverse this decision.

The normal rule is that the judgment by the Constitutional Court is final. A departure from the principle can be justified only when circumstances of a substantial and compelling character make it necessary to do so. We see no such a compelling character in this case. Not being agreeable with the court’s decision is not enough. The Constitutional Court being one of the two highest forums, and the apex courts of our country, it has to be really careful about its final judgment and make sure that there is no miscarriage of justice in a particular case.

Justice is above all. It should also be noted that review is not on any day an appeal in disguise. It can’t be put in the same par as the original hearings of the case. Appeal is to a higher court from a lower court when a party is affected by the judgment.

It is well settled that a party is not entitled to seek a review of a judgment delivered by an apex court merely for the purpose of a rehearsing and a fresh decision of the case. When an apex court reviews a judgement, it does not mean that it is asking itself to run through the proceedings again and decide for a fresh judgment. It is just some kind of reconsideration to a case when it believes that there has been some mistake or miscarriage of justice. It is just an acceptance to the reality of apparent human philosophy, which is inherent to fallibility. Justice is the highest priority, and thus, review could only be done for the sake of justice. Until and unless there is something really obvious that has been missing or omitted in the judgement, there could be no review as according to the normal rule, the decision of the Constitutional Court is final.

There is a saying that justice cannot just be seen, it must be felt in the hearts of the people and in the soul of the country. Justice is above all indeed. Our courts are not mechanised robots and computers when you know for sure that nothing could go wrong in the process.

Judges are humans, and humans are bound to make mistakes. Mistake once done has to be given a chance for fixing as well. This is the normal human psyche. So why not the decisions when the justice is on stake? Like, in day to day life, people make mistakes and amend mistakes, things change. Thus our Constitutional Court, which is the paramount of justice, has also been given a special power. This power is exclusive.

It is just accepting to the wide known fact that humans are not infallible. But this does not mean that the judgment’s given out by the Constitutional Court and its judges are anything less than perfect. Sometimes, you may overlook some grave evidence or some mistake that couldn’t have possibly been foreseen then. Thus, the Constitutional Court has an exclusive right to review its own judgments in the rarest of rare cases.

But it has to be noted that review is not substituting a judgment. A judgment cannot be unsettled when declared. This is a fundamental principle. It is only reconsidering when the Constitutional Court feels that something of grave nature has gone wrong in the judgment. Judgments cannot be taken lightly when they are declared. It has to be understood that power to review is only exercised in rarest of rare cases. We cannot take our Constitutional Court casually. It is true that humans can make mistakes but we are not supposed to have only that in our minds. We have to believe that they are always right. In fact, we have to know that they are always right. So therefore, if incase anything ever goes wrong, it could obviously only be something of a really patent wrong.

There’s really nothing warranting the Constitutional Court to reconsider its decision on Mr Lungu’s eligibility. Let him contest the 2026 elections if he wants.

UPND GOVERNMENT FAILED POLICIES IN THE ENERGY SECTOR

Lusaka-Wednesday 19th June,2024

Food and energy security form part of the critical pillars to national peace and security.

This government has bungled both with little realisation to the extensive damage this is doing to the stability of the country.

We have noted various Cabinet decisions regarding the current food and energy crises.

The decisions do not inspire or in anyway resolve the issues.

ON FUEL

While President Hakainde Hichilema pledged to deliver cheaper fuel, he has done the opposite.

Zambia is now suffering unprecedented high cost of fuel with no relief in sight.

While founder President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda built the TAZAMA and Indeni Refinery as national strategic assets and as solutions to secure reliable fuel to a landlocked country, the New Dawn Government has abandoned plans to convert INDENI into a full-capacity refinery and have opted to turn the multi-million dollar INDENI Refinery infrastructure into a blender and an ordinary Oil Marketing Company.

It is clear that Government has abandoned plans to import crude oil that guaranteed cheaper fuel and utilised both TAZAMA and INDENI to produce various petroleum products that included Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, Heavy Oils and Bitumen.

The sector has been beset by corruption and massive confusion and is now driven by illegal ad-hoc decisions.

While the UPND blamed the Patriotic Front Government of accumulating debt to OMCs, and claimed that fuel was cheaper because government was not paying it’s debt, but this government has driven the debt from $400million as at August 2021 to $800million as at June 2024.

ELECTRICITY

When the Patriotic Front Government came into power, they executed plans to uprate ZESCO generation capacity.

Government invested in upgrading Kariba North Bank, Itezhi-Itezhi, and built a brand new power station, the 750 megawatts Kafue Gorge Lower.

ZESCO also upgraded smaller hydro stations such as; Lunzua, Lusiwasi, Musonda and Chishimba Falls.

Government also promoted independent power producers such as Mamba Power Station and IDCs partnership with the private sector where Ngonye and Bangweulu solar companies produced solar power.

Zambia’s installed capacity was upgraded from 1,600 megawatts to 3,500 megawatts by August 2021.

However, this government has concentrated on signing new export agreements and in many cases, detrimental to the development and economic well-being of our country.

The recent drought exposed these schemes to an extent that Zambia is suffering the worst load-shedding and power cuts in decades, yet ZESCO has not halted the huge power exports.

The damage to households and small and medium enterprises that the power cuts have caused are incalculable.

Yet what we see from this government is rhetoric and continued poor decisions.

UNBUNDLING ZESCO

We also wish to express alarm at the recent Cabinet decision to unbundle ZESCO and remove transmission and distribution network infrastructure from ZESCO.

The so called Open Access policy that will be detrimental to ZESCO and to Zambia’s energy security.

The lie that this will bring investment in the sector is a tired argument as we have seen similar decisions made in sectors as mining where the so called policies are made to attract foreign investment but leave Zambia more vulnerable and at a loss than before.

Similarly during privatisation program,.a strategic asset ZCCM’s Power Division was literally given to private entities without proper consideration to public interest.

We saw ZCCM’S prized electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply company, Power Division, sold to the private sector instead of leaving it under the newly created state-owned investment company, ZCCM-IH.

This careless decision made for such a strategic asset went to benefit local and foreign individuals but robbed ZCCM-IH a key strategic investment, future earnings.

We therefore call for broad and adequate consultations before any attempts are made to unbundle ZESCO.

Further Government has become notorius at ignoring the provisions of Article 210 of the Republican Constitution which requires that any sale, transfer or change of a state-owned company or key strategic national assets, that Parliament grants two-thirds majority.

Court dismisses Munirs request to quash seditious charges for duplicity

THE Lusaka Magistrates Court has thrown out an application by Lumezi Constituency member of parliament Munir Zulu asking the State to kiss-off some of his seditious charges which have been duplicated.

Zulu wanted the State to choose one count on which it will try him.

In this case the law maker is charged with three counts of seditious practices.

It is alleged that Zulu between May 25 and May 27, 2024 accused President Hakainde Hichilema of instructing the Inspector general of police and the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security to wipe him out together with others unknown, in order to raise discontent or disaffection among the people of Zambia.

Zulu is said to have declared Eastern province a no-go area and danger zone for Southerners in attempts an act said to promote feelings of ill will or hostility between different communities
or different parts of a community.

He allegedly said that in an event that he was killed, his offspring would avenge his death, as an attack on one person was an attack on all, with an aim to raise discontent or disaffection among the people of Zambia.

Before witnesses could testify in the case yesterday, Zulu’s lawyer Mcqueen Zaza submitted before magistrate Faidess Hamaundu that the charge sheet was bad for duplicity.

Zaza said the charges pressed against Zulu stem from the same facts when he uttered the alleged remarks at Cresta lodge in Ibex Hill on May 26 and not the wrong dates cited by the State.

He said Zulu returned from Rwanda on May 25 and made the alleged utterances on May 26.

“Your honor these offenses slapped on the accused stem from the same facts, same incident and facts, they arose on the 26th of May, 2024, at a lodge called cresta in Ibex Hill. There’s duplicity in the way these charges were formulated,”he said.

“Duplicity arises when a single count charges two or more distinct offences or when multiple counts charge the same offence from the same facts. When we look at the charge sheet we will find the same offence has been charged for two counts.”

He wondered how Zulu will defend himself on duplicated charges.

“These counts were preferred in total breach of Section 134 to 137 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). The purposes of the cited Sections, is to afford an accused person an opportunity for understanding the charges and be able to defend himself, in line with Article 18 of the constitution for a fair trial,” Zaza said.

“It is our humble prayer that these counts be dismissed as they are bad for dublicity, or the State can choose one of the counts they want the accused person tried with.”

In response, State advocate Susan Bess argued that the charges were not duplicated.

She said Zaza had misdirected himself as the charges had different particulars of the offense which Zulu committed on different dates.

“The law is settled on what amounts to duplicity of counts and riding on the Shamwana versus the people case, in relation to charges, duplicity means charging two or more separate charges on the same fact,” Besa said.

“Duplicity of counts is distinguished from multiplicity of counts which entails having several counts arising from the same offence. In this case, there is no duplicity nor multiplicity of counts.”

She said even though the facts in count one and two arise from one incident, each count exhibits a different intention as the various words ultered by Zulu amount to two different offences.

“We implore the court to dismiss the application,” said Besa.

Ruling on the application, magistrate Hamaundu said there was no two fold increase on the charges.

“There is only one offense alleged in each charge and the question alleging duplicity does not arise. The application is refused,”said magistrate Hamaundu.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INCREASES ZRA REVENUE COLLECTION BY 60 PERCENT

Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati has disclosed that the utilisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has increased the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA)’s capacity to collect revenue by 60 percent in the past two years.

Mr. Mutati says AI has given the ZRA more tools to increase revenue collection and tax compliance.

Speaking when he delivered a lecture on Artificial Intelligence at the University of Lusaka Silverest Campus in Chongwe District this morning, Mr. Mutati said AI has come to stay and Zambians must embrace it.

He said Artificial Intelligence has many benefits which will help in areas such as justice, business, security and agriculture.

“AI will help in the dispensation of justice by ensuring that those who do not understand English, AI gadgets will translate court proceedings and no one will go to jail for not understanding English,” said Mr. Mutati.

He also disclosed that AI tools are also able to help the country predict adverse weather conditions and plan for such challenges such as floods and droughts.

And the Technology and Science Minister has disclosed that the country has finished connecting seven of its eight neighbors to fibre optic.

Mr. Mutati says the last country remaining to be connected is Mozambique which will be connected by the end of June.

He says the connection of Zambia to all it’s eight neighbors is aimed at improving digital connectivity and providing a conducive environment for business and commerce to thrive.

And Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Commissioner General Dingani Banda says Artificial Intelligence has helped in automatic fraud detection.

Mr. Banda says ZRA is able to analyse importers and exporters online and detect fraud faster than a human can do.

He says an Artificial Intelligence Unit has been set up at ZRA headquarters and it is staffed by very competent Zambians.

Meanwhile, University of Lusaka Vice Chancellor Professor Pinalo Chifwanikeni said Zambia must come up with short, medium and long term measures in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence.

Professor Chifwanikeni says the New Dawn Government’s agenda is very clear that AI will help in various sectors such as energy and agriculture.

WE LENT MALANJI’S COMPANY UP TO $2M BY 2015 BECAUSE HE HAD CAPACITY

….the Loan was cleared in October 2020, long before his Ankara trip – FNB

Lusaka… Tuesday, June 18, 2024

A state witness has told the Lusaka Magistrate Court that over $2 million was lent to former Foreign Affairs Minister Honourable Joseph Malanji’s company by 2015 because he was a deserving client.

Mr Malanji was only elected Member of Parliament for Kitwe’s Kwacha constituency in 2016 and eventually, appointed Foreign Affairs Minister on January 5, 2018.

Biggy Trywell Banda, a senior manager at First National Bank also told the court that the said loan was in October 2020, cleared by Gibson Power Systems way before Hon Malanji’s Ankara trip.

Mr. Banda was testifying in a matter in which former foreign minister Joseph Malanji and former secretary to the treasury, Fredson Yamba are charged with 10 counts of willful failure to comply with laid down procedures and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Yamba is charged with two counts of willful failure to comply with laid down procedures while Malanji is facing eight counts of being in possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

When the matter came up for continued trial, the witness said Malanji’s company was awarded several loans because he was among the deserving clients with properties on the Copperbelt as security.

“In my submission to DEC, I explained the facilities that were obtained by Gibson Power Systems; first facility was granted on or around February, 2013, amounting to 4.9 million Kwacha, a loan that was to be paid over a period of 5 years.

“…there came the need for additional funds which brought the second facility disbursed at about February, 2014. The Second facility was for 7.260 million Kwacha in form of an overdraft which is awarded to deserving customers to draw from their account up to the facility amount to run for a tenure of 1 year,” he said.

Mr Banda disclosed that FNB also approved Gibson Power System’s third Loan facility to the tune of 10.2 million Kwacha in November, 2015.

He further told the court that Malanji’s Company had settled the loan in October 2020, before the Ankara trip.

“I can confirm that the loan was settled in October 2020 way before December, the time for the Ankara trip,” said the witness.

The witness told the court that there was nothing illegal done as regards to the money advanced to Gibson Royal Hotel for purposes of renovations.

He said the bank disbursed over 22.300 million Kwacha in loans to Gibson Power System which at the time would be converted up to $2m.

The matter comes up tomorrow for continued trial.

TWO BROTHERS DETAINED AFTER 2-YEAR-OLD GIRL’S DEATH IN SUSPECTED DEFILEMENT CASE

A 29-year-old Civilian Officer at the Zambia National Service-ZNS in Choma, Abraham Chimese, together with his 20-year-old brother, Joseph Chimese, are in Police custody for allegedly causing the death of the former’s 2-year-old girl child in a suspected defilement case.

On 17th June, 2024 around 08:55 hours, Choma Police Station received a tip from a staff at the District General Hospital that there was a juvenile girl there who had died after being suspected to have been assaulted and defiled.

The deceased is said to have been taken to the hospital the previous day by the father on an allegation that the baby was not feeling well.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, states that at the time of receiving the information, the remains of the girl had already been deposited at the mortuary.

Daka says Police Officers conducted a thorough physical inspection and observed that she had multiple fresh wounds and bruises, as well as suspected human sperms on the genitalia, accompanied by blood.

He notes that preliminary inquiries indicate that the deceased was under the custody of her biological father in Shampande Compound following a marital separation with his wife in April, 2024 and was sharing the same bed with her.

On 16th June, the father took the child to Shampande Clinic, claiming she had malaria symptoms, however, medical personnel noticed some fresh wounds on the child’s body and referred her to Choma General Hospital for further examination.

The child was admitted and later died at approximately 03:25 hours the following day, with the hospital instructing the father to report the matter to the Police owing to the suspicious nature of the case.

Meanwhile, Daka says investigations revealed that the victim’s uncle, Joseph Chimese, had been responsible for the daily care and bathing of the deceased in the absence of the biological mother.

He says on the night of 15th and 16th June, the deceased slept in the bedroom with the father while Joseph slept in the sitting room alone.

Daka reveals that the father admitted to inflicting physical injuries on the deceased during the night she spent in his bedroom, but denies having carnal knowledge of her.

Investigation has further established that before her death, the girl was defiled, with more details expected to be availed after a postmortem scheduled for today, 19th June, 2024.
